Book your time in advance! I only figured that out from the reviews (thank you fellow reviewers!!). I was able to book late last night for today but I was glad it was good to go when we got there! They gave us an audio tour usb to listen to as we drove up the mountain. There were so many amazing views, the wild life center was awesome, and of course we had fun on the bridge! My 5 year old loved it but we kept a close eye on him/ had him hold our hand because of the height and rocky areas. Not dangerous for little kids as long as you keep hold of them the entire time. Also it is very friendly to those who have a hard time with stairs, there were several elevators! You can also avoid the trails and drive to the top.

Purchased tickets in advance and went on a week day. Crowd control was handled well and never waited or felt too busy. I’m 8 months pregnant and enjoyed the bridge and climbed halfway up the rocks. We also enjoyed the nature center with rehabilitated animals after. Quick and fun way to get outside and enjoy the views while in Blowing Rock!

Gotta be honest, this is the number one tourist attraction in the high country. Everything is really nice, very clean. They have worked and went out of their way to keep it natural And what they have built blends right into the scenery. If you make a trip to Grandfather mountain, you will not be disappointed. If you make a trip to the high country without Grandfather, you have cheated yourself out of a great few hours. Mildred's grill served good food but I suggest a picnic As there are tons of places to enjoy it, be sure to take time to get out and walk some of the trails. Remember, it's going to be colder up there.

Absolutely stunning! 10/10 recommend. The hiking was really cool and not too difficult, you can drive all the way to the top if hiking isn’t your forte. Amazing views and an awesome bucket list item!

Definitely worth the admission and trip. You may purchase tickets online and get eligible discounts online only. The location is privately owned and staffed with plenty of educational sensorial and facilities. Stopped by the educational facility when enjoying g the drive up, listening to their audio guide provided with your admissions. The end of the journey is the swinging bridge. If you cross it, enjoy the various sceneries of the top of the world. Thumbs up if you appreciate the comments/reviews provided to guide your decision and visit.

I just have only one word for this place, that's "Amazing!". I went to there on last weekend 10-25-25, and it was an excellent experience. When I walked on the bridge, I could see the autumn forest around the mountains. It's a beautiful view for my first Fall Season in North Carolina. My recommend is go early if you don't want to see so many visitors come there to checkout and take the picture. .................... More pictures and details will be on my FB: Sang Lam Tran.

We unknowingly ended up at the Highland Games. It was quite frustrating, but definitely a unique experience. After a few hours, we were able to get up to grandfather mountain. There were beautiful views. The restrooms at the gift shop needed maintained a bit better, but with the number of people visiting, I could see how it could get out of control easily. Expect lots of people when going up here. The drive can be intimidating. And bring your courage to walk the bridge.
Kory H — Google review
This is such a beautiful view off of grandfather Mountain. You should definitely do it. One of the good little tricks are if you can handle it is to park in the lower parking and hike up to the bridge. It’s a very beautiful hike. They line the trail with natural stone steps. It could be slippery if it’s wet outside, but it’s a nice short hike to the bridge and then you could hike back down. It is very pricey to get in here for some reason it was 36 bucks a person. I do not think it’s worth that price. It is a privately owned side of the mountain. The backside is all nature and it’s owned by the state of North Carolina, so if you’re a very good hiker, you can get in for free hiking through the backside look up some trails. If you are not, don’t even attempt it.

Parking is available just above the curve. A short walk down will allow you to film someone running up the hill. Watch for traffic and be considerate of motorists traveling up and down. A great roadside attraction!

We were on a road trip and decided to add this stop in our route. We had dont the Forest Gump point in Utah. So we thought we would hit this one from the movie. We drove a long way like 4 plus hours to find out it’s $32.00 per adult to go in. I was SHOCKED. I wouldn’t pay that if Tom Hanks himself was actually there. My friend did it years ago and he said it was free. Now there is a toll plaza to pay. Crazy Pricing! We did not go in.

Great place to overlook some of the blue ridge mountains! I would recommend stopping at the picnic area and walking up as you’ll have to be cautious of the cars coming up! Worth the effort to make it up!

All of a 3-second spot in a famous movie, but the location itself is pretty amazing in the fall. Definitely recommend as part of the grandfather mountain experience.

Fantastic spot for catching a gorgeous sunrise over the mountains! Short, easy climbing to the top and plenty of parking in the early morning hours.

Magnificent views of the mountains make negotiating this trail well worth it. This was my second visit here (1st was about 4.5 years ago) and it was equally as magnificent as the first visit. This visit was at the beginning of fall leaf season, and the yellow, orange, red colors were beginning to show. Beautiful!

The signs and entrance aren’t very clear. You can miss it easily. There are multiple alternate routes even on one trail. The trails are lined with rocks with are so cool. The top is worth the hike up.

I went to Beacon Heights recently and completely fell in love with the place. I used to be a beach person, but after seeing these fall colors and mountain views, I think I’ve changed my mind 😍 The hike is easy and the view is absolutely beautiful.

Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Grandfather Mountain is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. This towering peak boasts a mile-high swinging bridge that offers breathtaking views, making you feel as if you're on top of the world. The scenic drive to reach this natural wonder is an experience in itself, with narrow yet picturesque mountain roads leading you through lush landscapes.
I visited Grandfather Mountain on July 4th and had an absolutely amazing experience. We started our drive from Cary, and it took about 3.5 hours to reach. The drive was smooth with hardly any traffic, and the mountain roads are narrow but very scenic and well-maintained. One of the highlights is the Mile High Swinging Bridge – it’s small but truly feels like you’re standing on top of the world! The views are stunning, and the air is so fresh. There are staff and even young volunteers at the top guiding visitors and ensuring safety, which was impressive. We also did a short 1-mile hiking trail, and the natural beauty all around was just breathtaking. You get to see lush greenery and wide forest landscapes—almost 5,000 acres of it! A few tips: • The ticket is $34 per person, which might feel a bit steep for families, so plan accordingly. • Carry your own food and water – there are only limited snacks available, and they are priced high. • Wear proper hiking shoes – the rocks can be tricky, and good grip is essential. Overall, this is a well-organized, family-friendly destination that offers a truly memorable outdoor experience. Highly recommended!
Ajit S — Google review
It’s hard to describe just how much I enjoy this hike! I have lived in North Carolina for nine years, and have explored many of the popular hikes and mountains, yet grandfather remains my favorite. The hike to MacRae Peak is a gorgeous hike, which involves some cables and ladders. I would not recommend bringing young children, but if you are relatively active, it should be a moderate hike. The view on the top is absolutely breathtaking, you were able to see 360° of the Blue Ridge Mountains! If hiking is not your thing, the mile high bridge is definitely a great alternative, there’s also a small zoo and gift shop.

If you're a nature lover, I recommend visiting this place. It's a magical place, full of stunning views. If you're a fan of hiking and climbing, choose shoes suitable for rough terrain. Bring food with you if you plan to spend a long time there, as food prices are a bit high. You'll have to pay $30 per adult to enter. The place is very organized and clean, and the security staff is everywhere. The service is absolutely amazing. The place is magical, you have to try it.
ASAR H — Google review
First off, we booked our tickets online and this made it entrance super easy and quick. The tickets are $28 per person, and you pick a time to enter, but you can stay all day . Judging by the signs you have to be off the trails by 5pm. The park is beautiful, so many spots to pull over and see the views . We stopped first at Spinx rock and split rock then about half way up at main visitor center , with so much to see and a small zoo with bears, elk, eagles, otters, mountain lions and a hellbender enclosure coming soon. There is a souvenir shop and a little cafe . We drove up some more after hanging out there for a while and parked at the Black Rock parking area and trail head. We did the short .44 mile hike to the swinging bridge. The trail has lots of roots and some rocks but very doable for all ages and we saw all ages on that trail . One note is that you do not have to do the trail, you can drive up the road to the swinging bridge if you aren’t a trail person The area at the swinging bridge is a large area with another souvenir shop , another trailhead for the grandfather trail and of course the swinging bridge . The bridge doesn’t sway a lot , the views are wonderful and well worth it. The rock on the other side is large and there were lots of people, some sitting and relaxing and others taking photos . There were lots of bird watchers up there as well and two park rangers to discuss whatever you like about the mountains , one was bilingual too by the way. There are no ropes or guidelines so there are signs to warn you to keep away from the sides or to be very careful. We then walked back down the trail to Black Rock trailhead and our car and did that trail. This trail is rocky and even more roots but a great little hike not steep at all. There are some great view points at the end (1 mile in and 1mile out for the trail) the large rocks at the end have a ladder and a steel cable to climb up on the rock for incredible 360 views . Be careful and respect where you are but I never once worried about slipping . Wear good grippy shoes . To finish up I’d say this was definitely worth the money and next time I’d want to get there right at opening so I could do more trails .

Visiting Grandfather Mountain was an unforgettable experience! The forest trails are absolutely beautiful — filled with tall trees, fresh mountain air, and breathtaking views at every turn. The mix of rugged cliffs, hanging bridge, and peaceful walking paths makes it perfect for both adventure and relaxation. I loved how well-maintained the park is, with clear signs and friendly staff who truly care about the place. The wildlife habitats and nature museum were an added bonus, offering a deeper connection to the mountain’s rich ecosystem. Whether you love hiking, photography, or simply being in nature, Grandfather Mountain is a must-visit destination that leaves you feeling refreshed and inspired. 🌲⛰️💚

MacRae Meadows

MacRae Meadows in Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina is a must-visit tourist attraction for those exploring the state. This venue hosts the highly anticipated Highlands Games, which commemorates the Scottish immigrants who settled in North Carolina after the battle of Culloden. The event offers a rich historical experience through various booths showcasing different clans. Visitors can enjoy watching exciting games and musical performances that provide a glimpse into what to expect from the scheduled concert later on.
We wandered here on a little exploration sidetrack while visiting the area. It was a beautiful site atop the mountain. There are some amazing views from here and we were lucky enough to have my little one see her first snowfall.

It was our first time going to Grandfather Mountain Highland Games 2025, which is held on MaRae Meadows on the side of Grandfather Mountain. It is a huge mostly flat area, easy to walk around. We had a great time. Great live music, vendors, crafts, food, atmosphere. Bagpipes, highland dance, and heavy athletics competitions, and sheep herding demonstrations. Lovely people in the clans tents who were very friendly, informative, and helpful. Luckily we brought our rain gear, because we were caught in a short but heavy downfall. Shuttle busses to the site ran continually and had very experienced, safe and careful drivers who had great stories and info for us.

Attended the Scottish Highland Games. Kids had kid games (tossing the caber, throwing a stone, tossing the bale of straw over a line, etc ) Great fun! Adults and some kids marched in the Parade of the Tartans.

The Highlands Games at Grandfather Mountain NC is definitely worth it if you are visiting NC. After the battle of Culloden many scots immigrated to the US, a big amount in the state of North Carolina. The Festival is filled with booths that gives visitors a glimpse of the rich history of all these clans. The games.were fun to watch and the bands gave us all a glimpse of the scheduled.concert tonight. Make sure to sample some Scottish baked goods from House of Douglas bakery. They also do serve traditional scottish fare such as Haggis. There are many shops to purchase souvenirs as well.

Back again!! This is great festival that is heritage centric. Parking can be a challenge, but we found that if you arrive by 11:00 am, then access to parking is much better. Be sure to walk around and speak with Highland Games competitors.

A good experience for the most part. It was hard to see all the events where I was seated. They had multiple events going on at once. Multiple announcers talking at once. You could not park at the event. You had to park off site and shuttle bus to it for an additional fee. Lots of items for sale with a scottish flair. Super enjoyed some of the music being played in the surrounding woods. You just had to wander around to find them.
Charles A — Google review
Absolutely disorganized. Met nice people but organizer needs help. No clear directions on getting there. Paid for up close parking as I've had 3 back surgeries and both hips replaced. They didn't bother to tell us we couldn't park in our paid for spot Sunday until after 11 as "church" was going on. Where we had been parking was 200 ft from the "service" and they were letting others in. Had to back 1/2 mile down a road to park. Packet sent to us said reception Fri night was black tie or Highland formal. We purchased Highland formal attire only to find people entering the reception wearing tee shirts..... not even business casual. I complained to several staff at the games about the disorganization and they ALL agreed it was a mess and it was normal. So sad.
Bill A — Google review
A great Highland experience but it did have some Festival issues. For starters the parking was confusing if you did not in great detail study the maps and the schedule, and even they were a little confusing over the Caldwell lot that didn't exist. The parking for the first night was only at the high school and you had to be aware of that fact. It was kind of the same for the last day where they specifically told you you could only use the two lots that were designated to be open. Lots were quite full at times as in any festival. Especially when the parking was at a perimeter area that required busing to the main site. I did find $20 a day for 2 people for 4 days to be a bit excessive for the busing but I understand it was not a cheap thing for them to do. Including rental of the Lots you were parked in. I would have suggested perhaps a 4-day bus pass at a reduced rate but I believe the organizers and the concession for the bus charged what they thought was a fair rate especially when you include a parking fee . We bought our tickets months in advance on the website, and had no problems, it was very concise as to what you were getting and advised the parking information was going to be priced much later, and it was. We made it a point to get there as early as possible most days and leave before closing time, to give us time to get back get the car and go back up to the parking for the late day concert. Concerts were great, nice band mix and some food available there, but a bit limited. We avoided most of the problems. I don't believe we ever waited more than 40 minutes at any part of the parking/BUSING experience. The food was expensive, as in any good Festival it's going to be, there were many options, some authentic, some Carnival, everything we tried was quite good; and we have eaten in Scotland, the Highland breakfast and meat pies were very authentic and very good, and the breakfast was quite reasonably priced. The placement of the clan family tents was definitely a viewing problem as was the placement of the three tents on the field, you did have to move around quite a bit to see everything you might want to see. My understanding was there were 32,000 people there on Saturday which is a record for the games, and that is always going to bring issues. This is been a bucket list item for us for years , we had a good idea what to expect , and where you were going was to be a bit on the expensive side, and have some Festival issues, but we planned for and we're very pleased with the entire experience. The authentic Scottish cultural dancing music and athletic events were just awesome, as were the representations by all of the many clan families. Some very informative lectures and informational talks given as well.

Best highland games ever. Largest Scottish clan gathering ever. They do a very good job of keeping clean and orderly. Very compassionate to guests.

The mountains are calling.... The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games are amazing! We've been to others in the area and none have the magic and appeal as being among the mountains and hearing the bagpipes flow through the hills. The food, atmosphere, music and the most clans gathered outside of Scotland makes this a definite bucket list for anyone with Scottish heritage or a love of Scotland.

American restaurant
Tartan Restaurant is a casual dining option with a cozy ambiance that serves a variety of traditional American comfort food. Visitors are pleasantly surprised by their spontaneous decision to visit the restaurant, as they were satisfied with their experience. They enjoyed freshly prepared dishes such as the Ruben sandwich accompanied by macaroni salad and the barbecue sandwich known as The Maclean served with fries. Both meals were flavorful and delicious, particularly the husband's barbecue which had a delightful smoky taste.
I only ate here with my family for breakfast, wish we'd been able to also try lunch there as well. I decided to try the Tartan Toast - it was ok, but a bit of a let down for $7. One review said "the tartan toast is not to be missed" but I kind of disagree. I've attached an image to show it - it's just some nice toast with a lot of cream cheese. Not bad in any way, just not really something I'd go out of my way for. I wish it had a description on the menu as I'd probably not have tried it. Otherwise I also had an egg and some liver mush with it. Both of those were good. They also had some VERY good coffee. I drank mine black and my wife used some cream in hers and we both thought it was great. Service was pretty quick and the staff were all nice. Would definitely go again. I mostly wanted to post a review on here for anyone wondering what the Tartan Toast was (toast w/ cream cheese).

Tartan restaurant was great. Not too many places in the mountains so it was appreciated. It was super busy, but the servers were hustling and we didn’t have to wait long. The food was good. Would have been nice if the music volume was a little lower.

Had biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon and grits. Cheesy grits! Top 5 grits I’ve ever had! Biscuits were good but not as tall & fluffy as I prefer. Sausage gravy was more of a brown eye gravy—not bad but not my preference. Service was great! Prices quite reasonable. Definitely would go again.

Grew up in Boone near seven devils and come back early. ever since grandfather restaurant closed I've been looking for another place that's decently priced has amazing food cooked correctly and has exceptionally friendly service. My parents vacation back here also suggested this restaurant for the everyday breakfast. I was not disappointed maybe a 10-minute wait to eat And there was a lot of seats open when we finally got set down which i didn't understand that but .. That being said. I am very picky about my breakfast. Eggs over easy HAS to be perfect. Pancakes have to be perfectly cooked. Same for hash browns and bacon. They did nail all the food and would highly recommend their blueberry pancakes! Eggs were perfectly cooked as was the hash browns not soggy/oilly at all. The service seemed a little understaffed and running hard. I think I saw three servers for the entire place two were extremely nice boisterous and would carry-on conversation with anybody. We happen to get the one that look like she was having a bad day which is understandable If they were understaffed it's just we only got our water filled once when it was set on the table. Had to ask another server for a couple of things we needed like butter. That doesn't change my mind about this place I will be back it is my new daily morning breakfast if I'm there for 5 days I'll be eating there 2 or 3 of those 5 days for sure. The price was not horrible I would say for the quality of food that I got, not that it was pretty it was just very well cooked, I'd have no problem paying this often to eat there. Bacon. You can tell it's good quality bacon from the flavor just if you like your bacon crispy make sure you ask for it 😉

Good food at a reasonable price. We favor the breakfast menu. We have been here several times and been satisfied each time. It can get crowded and that can slow the service but that's due to it's popularity. There are some condiments that are typical at other places that we were told had to be asked for specifically but that is not a huge issue for us. It is my wife's first breakfast choice when we have the opportunity. Ca$h i$ King!

I had been looking forward to trying this restaurant after my brother let me try a biscuit from his breakfast to go order. I have to give this a Taco Bell review, because although the breakfast, western omelet with home fries and biscuit, tasted good by the time we got to Valle Crucis and Mast General Store I had to head straight to the restroom. I'm sorry. Our server was nice. It took quite a while, but it was busy. Maybe my experience was a one off, but I won't be able to try again.

It was great. Looks like a tiny place when you first walk in. Don't worry, it's not. The food was amazing. I got the ghost pepper burger. It was not as hot as I was expecting but tasted amazing. Can't wait to go back.

Soup and salad bar for lunch is always excellent. Definitely try the chili! quiche is a little flat and tough. Breakfast is always on par. Servers excel 110 percent.

Rough Ridge Lookout, nestled in the stunning Grandfather Mountain area of North Carolina, is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and those seeking breathtaking vistas. Accessible via a wooden walkway, this scenic spot on the Blue Ridge Parkway offers panoramic views that are particularly mesmerizing during the fall when vibrant colors blanket the landscape. The trail spans 1.2 miles round trip with an elevation gain of over 360 feet, leading hikers to some of the region's most iconic overlooks.
Beautiful trail! We went at midday and it was lovely, but this trail would be magical for a sunrise hike. Use the mile markers to find the small parking lot at the trailhead. If you have rickety knees, take your hiking poles - makes it much easier! Don’t miss the iconic shot on the second rock outcrop!

This was a fabulously beautiful hike. Not a bunch of parking so go early. There were 3 places to hike to, all of them have gorgeous views!! This is a strenuous hike with many stairs and muddy spots. If you hike to the first stop it’s about 1/2 mile. If you go all the way up it’s almost a mile. All the way up and back is 1.8 miles.
Jennifer C — Google review
Absolutely worth the stop and short hike. There are two amazing lookout points and many opportunities for incredible pictures. I'm so glad we stopped on our way home from the mountain resort. I'd say it was about a 20-30 minute hike each way and that's with two curious kids who make lots of stops. The parking was busy like we were told, but we found a space.
Natasha S — Google review
Intense trail up. Good with taking breaks. If you only make it to the 1st overlook where the wooden deck steps start. That is a great spot too. Several overlooks. Worth the workout if you have the proper shoes. Stepping on rocks at angles is required. I would come back with hiking sticks/ poles.
Nichelle N — Google review
Rocky trail up but one of my favorite views. You can see for miles one way and see Grandfather Mountain the other way. Very crowded, especially during foliage season, but worth the crowds. There are multiple rocky overlooks as you go up; the further up you go, the less crowded they get. The trail is relatively steep but the workout is well worth it.

Great hike! No more than an hour to the top with great views! As long as you can get a parking spot you’ll be set, if you drive by a couple times more than likely a few spots will open up

Roadside Parking near Tanawha Trail (AKA Rough Ridge scenic spot) Once you park at the parking lot. there will be a sign show you if you want to turn left or right (There is not mention about the scenic Rough Ridge location.(they use something else name) Anyway choose the short part (left side trail) There are 3 big stones there you must hike and see once during the Falls season... First stone you will use just 15-20 min to walk. These pictures are taken on Oct 26,2025.
May U — Google review
One of my favorite places in NC. Unlike a lot of other places in the mountains, this is only a 10-15 minute hike making it probably top 3 places to watch a sunrise and sunset anywhere close to here. I want to add that if you’re coming from Hanging rock area, make sure you don’t miss parking. You have to park at “Roadside Parking near Tanawha Trail” if you type that in google map instead of rough ridge lookout , it will take you right there. We missed it and had to turn around. Also side note: some of the really cool pics of people sitting on the edge of the pointed rocks are in an area they are not supposed to be at. There are signs all over. It’s to protect the natural area.. so if you’re going for those pics specifically just know you will have to break the rules to get those shots.. so we decided not to. You can get amazing pics without that one shot at this location.

Golf course
Linville Golf Club is a renowned destination in North Carolina, attracting golf enthusiasts from all walks of life. The course was designed by the world-renowned architect Donald Ross and has been praised for its excellent greens and narrow fairways. Visitors have highlighted the warm hospitality of the staff, making them feel like valued members of the club. The club also offers additional amenities such as a clubhouse, restaurant, and tennis courts, adding to the overall experience.
Back in the day, many people from different walks of life saw Linville’s potential. World-renowned golf course architect Donald Ross was one of them. Ross visited Linville in 1924 and knew almost immediately that this was the place he wanted to build his next golf course. He spent barely two days scouting the soggy valley and forests in the area. Later that year, Ross and his company began construction of a new 18-hole championship golf course and the old course was abandoned. The Linville Golf Club was born! To say Donald Ross did a magnificent job creating The Linville Golf Club is like calling the Titanic a boat. In true Ross fashion, the course is both playable and challenging. On most holes, there’s plenty of room off the tee, although some require something less than driver. There’s a lot of undulation and mounding in the fairways, creating uneven lies, but the biggest challenge when playing this course lies in the green complexes. They’re smaller than most and the undulation and pitch requires some skill to get it close and keep it close. Many greens have no sand bunkers around them; they don’t need them, the grass mounding is penal enough. On just about any hole, your best bet is to leave it below the hole, if possible. Over the years, closely mowed collection areas around the green have been attributed to Ross, but that is just a fallacy. His goal in creating these collection areas around the green was to promote the art of chipping. You’ll see this as you make your way around the course, especially at the par 3, 6th hole. Miss the green off the tee and you’ll know what I’m talking about. The 3rd hole is a par 4 that plays 414 yards from the White tees and has been ranked as one of golf’s 100 greatest holes. I had a good drive off the tee and was still left with an uphill 165-yard approach shot into a green that slopes dramatically from back to front and has a lot of undulation. Score a par or better and consider the round a success! During our stay, I met Bill Mechesney. Forty-nine years ago, Bill was the Assistant Professional at the Golf club. He and his wife Sue were back for the first time since he left. I asked him what differences he saw in the course then and now; his answer was “Very little.” That’s not an uncommon response when it comes to a Donald Ross golf course. Ross’s courses are classics that stand the ultimate test – time. His green may not be large, but they are indeed challenging. Many of the greens don’t have any bunkers around them – they don’t need them. The creek that meanders throughout the course makes you think about your club selection. Tee box landing areas are generous, and the course isn’t overly long, yet conquering it is an arduous task. It’s a course I can’t wait to play again. There are two ways to play this incredible Donald Ross layout; become a member or stay at the Eseeola Lodge.
David T — Google review
As a group, we hit various courses through out North Carolina with the goal of enjoying the experience, not setting personal bests. I won’t bother commenting on the course, because that has already been done. It is amazing. I will leave it at that. The difference here is the people. AMAZING STAFF. We were welcomed with open arms and enjoyed a number of hilarious exchanges. In particular, Robert made us feel like members….and we had never been there before. We will go back again because of these people. We will do it over and over again.

Grandfather Mountain Highland Games Office

Non-profit organization
The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games Office is located at the top of Grandfather Mountain, the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountain Range. Visitors can experience breathtaking views and cross the mile-high swinging bridge for an exhilarating adventure. The area offers a beautiful lake where small boats and paddle boards can be rented, and there's even an elevator for those who prefer not to take the stairs.
Love it there is a elevator so u can enjoy the view without stairs. U don't have to be fit. Go early

Went with the family hoping for a good time. Will not go again. They didn't have half the games that were on the schedule and you could barely hear the announcer over the incessant drone of bagpipes all playing different songs at the same time. The clan tents surround the field so you are lucky if you get to see anything. Very poorly managed and planned. The food was good and most of the vendors were generally friendly but that is where our enjoyment ended. Definitely not worth the price of admission.

First time going and very disappointed in the extreme disorganization of the entire event. Parking was a joke and how is it justified to get people to pay $50 for a pass on Sunday to park close and then after only an hour of the gates being open tell them the lot is full. A male attendant with a hat and walking stick was as helpful as a bump on a log. If this is truly the largest games in the US, its ran very poorly. I have been to games all over and this by far was the worse. Disappointed in the lack of vendors. It seems it’s focused primarily on the Clan booths (which is fine for heritage) but give us vendors to get Scottish/British goods from. I hope next year they will get the parking better situated.
Micheal V — Google review
Loved the games. Always crowded. Disappointing in that their "massed bands" consisted of just 5 bands! Also disappointed by lack of any book vendors. Overall, great experience!
Andrew M — Google review
Terrible experience. Having to ride on the shuttle to get here instead of driving your own car only to get to the road to go up the mountain and learning from the bus driver that the shuttles aren't allowed on the main road so we had to go off roading up the mountain shows how little regard is given to the paying customers of the games. The athletic field is surrounded mainly by the clan tents so if you are lucky enough to find a place to sit, you can't see much of anything. The dancing tents are blocking our view of the athletic events. We waited over an hour in line to get food and because of the setup of the field and the food tents, you can't see anything going on while you wait. We paid so much money and as a customer that isn't Scottish and came to the games to enjoy the events, I feel like we are completely disregarded as useful other than to take in our hard earned money, to the event. We will never be returning. We could have had a much more enjoyable experience with our friends and family, which this is their first time attending a highland games event, doing something different in the mountains of NC. Stone Mountain is a completely different Highland Games experience. It is actually enjoyable to attend and you can actually watch what is going on. I am unsure though if some of our newbies in our party will ever attend due to the awful experience here.
Adam L — Google review
I love the games every year. It's great to catch up with friends and family who I only see on the mountain. So, why 3 stars? Well, my and other's interactions with some of the staff this year were so horrible that it almost turned me off to the games all together. It would be most advisable for the board to reconsider who they have interacting with their customers. I do not believe that the impression these people are giving is the impression the board wishes to exude. Edit: That staff memeber has been fired and tried to blow up the building. New staff is even worse. They keep making changes in what appears to be an attempt to keep people from coming. It's working. I'm hearing of many who will not be attending and I will only be there 1 day instead of my normal 4, and that 1 day is simply because I have a clan annual meeting I cannot miss. Get your act together!

West Fork Anglers - Fly Fishing Guide Service offers an unforgettable experience for both beginners and experienced anglers in North Carolina. With over 5,700 miles of streams and 38,000 acres of lakes to explore, the service provides expert guides like Nils and Jay Jay who are patient, knowledgeable, and equipped with everything needed for a successful fishing trip.
What a fun day, and great learning experience. We were both beginners at fly fishing, and Nils was the perfect guide. He took us for a half day float trip on the Watuga River. All the positive things written about him were true; patient, friendly, funny, supportive and affirming, and very skilled and knowledgeable. He was a great instructor, and made the experience so easy and enjoyable. We learned so much, and look forward to continuing learning and fly fishing other areas of the country. You absolutely can’t go wrong booking Nils as your guide, whether beginners or seasoned “veterans”. Thank you Nils for a great day!!!

Our guide was Wynn and man does he know his stuff. He took one guy that had never fly fished and another (me) that had never fished at all in his drift boat down the beautiful Watauga River and we had the best time! Highly recommend for experienced and newbies alike!
Michael B — Google review
Our guide was Jay Jay. What an amazing guy. Patient and kind, he took his time teaching us to fly fish. He brought everything needed from the hip waders to the flies, rods and polarized sun glasses. It had recently rained so most streams were muddy so he changed up what was planned and took us farther up the mountain. The first area landed us 9 trout. The second we only fished for a short time as it was still pretty muddy. The last location was a really tiny stream down a ravine. It was a hike down and then slowly made our way up the stream fishing each pool drop for small Brown Trout which we caught 2 of. All in all a wonderful day and a fantastic experience. Thank you Jay Jay. I hope to be back next year.

Worth every penny! My 15 yo and I had an epic day with Nils. My kid had never used a fly rod before, and he put 20 fish in the boat. The Watauga is beautiful enough that we'd have had an epic day even with zero fish. Nils is a great teacher and a fun companion. Highly recommended!
Caleb O — Google review
Spent a full day with Nils and a couple friends on a float trip. The fishing was great, but Nils was the highlight of the trip. He’s the man and makes a day on the water fishing better than it already is.
Brian M — Google review
I have never been much of a fisherman, much less a fly fisher. At the invitation of a dear friend who is an amazing angler, off went my wife and I for a two day fly fishing experience. To put it mildly, it was a fantastic experience, and our guide, Nils Peterson, put together a great combination of floating down the Watauga in Tennessee the first day and fishing some terrific private water back in North Carolina the second day. We caught plenty of trout to write home about! And Nils helped us feel experienced and confident that we could do this. People travel the world to catch fish like Nils led us to on day two. Whatever you do, you should check out West Fork Anglers!
Mark V — Google review
We were referred to Nils by a friend who knows a lot about fly fishing, so our expectations were high going into our trip. Our expectations were 100% blown away. Not only will Nils put you on fish, he has terrific customer service and is really great at making sure everyone on our trip had a wonderful time on the water, plus he is extremely patient and a great teacher of the sport of fly fishing. We booked the trip to celebrate my dads 60th bday and had such a fun and unique experience that we can't wait to come back and do it again soon. Book Nils for your next fly fishing adventure and you will not be disappointed. Thank you, Nils!

Having a great guide makes all the difference! Nils has patience and a great sense of humor which made the trip so fun!!! He also knows where to go for the catches! Old Hampton Store & Barbeque is a charming spot to enjoy some delicious BBQ and live music. While the menu may be limited, the pulled pork and chicken options are quite tasty, especially when paired with sides like fried okra and potato salad. The sauce bar offers a variety of flavors to enhance your meal. The atmosphere is lively, with both indoor and outdoor seating available for guests to relax and enjoy the music.
Honestly, the hest thing Infan say about this place is though it is clearly set up to accommodate tourists, it's mostly locals who are there on any given night. My personal biasis that the pulled pork is adequate and decent, but then sides are phenomenal. Excellent green beans and collards. I think it's best experienced when one cam wander outside to rhe stage nect door and eat one's barbecue to the live music frequently offered. Well worth the trip if you're in town.

My husband and I stopped in for a late lunch with our two kids (ages 8 and 3). The food was absolutely delicious, and everyone enjoyed their meal. When you order inside, you’ll be given a pager. Once it goes off, you just head to the back of the restaurant to pick up your food. They also offer live entertainment—both indoors and outdoors—depending on the event and time of day. The bar selection is excellent as well!
B B — Google review
Stopped in for dinner on a ln early fall Saturday evening. Upon arriving, we were immediately informed that they would have live music inside that evening (due to rain earlier, it was moved inside) but if we wanted a quieter dinner we were welcome to choose a seat outside on the covered porch. I was impressed straight away by their attention to making sure we had the experience we wanted, whether that was listening to live music or having a quieter dinner. You order at the counter and are given a pager to let you know when to come back and pick up your food. So while there are no servers, we found the staff at the counter to be very helpful and attentive. All of our group ordered the pulled pork, which I found to be good. Their vinegar-based sauce (they have a couple of different options) I found to be good, though I would have preferred something a bit more on the acidic side. Sides were also quite good. The collard greens were particularly exceptional.
Quinn M — Google review
Overall, a cute experience that's definitely fit for locals. The rustic charm and individuality of the place was a bonus to the music that drew us in. However, parking is chaotic and the lines for food and beverages are combined near the stage and it's LONG when it's busy. Unfortunately, it's just not set up to hold the amount of people it draws. Good problems to have, but hopefully they are being looked into.

we stumbled upon this after a long day of hiking at grandfather mountain and it did not disappoint!! their drinks amazing, their food fantastic, their vibes unmatched. will be coming back

When you go in you line up to place your order. They give you a pager so you will know when your food is ready. They will put it on a serving tray for you to take it to your table that you have to return once you take your food off. The food is good. Slow service at the bar, but he is a good bartender. Inside and outside dining with live music on the inside when we went. I have went before this time when they had a live event outside. I enjoyed this place every time I have been. I would recommend you to stop by if you are in the area.

Stopped in for lunch while staying the weekend in the area on Beech Mountain. We were out exploring the area after a trip to Grandfather Mountain and stumbled upon this little gem! I had a classic BBQ sandwich with baked beans and my husband had the wings, all delicious! They even had a small bar to the side as well, a gift shop and an art gallery in a separate building to the side. They also had a blacksmith on site that also had classes you could sign up for!
Amanda L — Google review
Great atmosphere, entertainment, courteous staff, and fantastic BBQ. My wife and I frequent new BBQ places wherever we go and we finally made it to Old Hampton where we were thoroughly impressed. I had the pulled pork and alone with no sauce very good with the right balance of smoke and sweet. But if using sauce, their house made sauces were impressive. Sides were worthy to mention too...collards are the best I've had. Mac and Cheese was the real deal homemade too and not made with powdered cheese. Staff was very courteous and the live music is top notch. They do get busy, but for a good reason and if you can handle the wait or catch them when they're not as busy, its worth it.

Nice and easy 30 minute hike! Would highly recommend proper hiking shoes though, there are a lot of rocks and roots and it’s easy to slip if it has rained recently. The views once you get out to flat rock are incredible! So many good spots to just sit and take it in. There’s a decent amount of parking too. Absolutely loved this hike and will for sure be back.

It had been a few years since I'd done this trail. Fantastic views for a very short hike. There are still a lot of trees down from Helene a year ago. Also, be careful after a rain because the rocks are very slippery!

Really quick an easy trail! Not the most amount of parking so get there relatively early to sunrise/sunset if that’s your goal. Dog and family friendly with pretty nice views. The sunrise and sunset really depends on the weather conditions.

Just shy of one mile loop trail with lots of shade until the top where you can view for miles and miles of the area. It is not considered "easy." This trail increasing in elevation as you get to top and has rocks and roots to climb over. If this is challenging, using poles or a walking stick is highly recommended. It's great for families and dogs on leashes. Little steps along the entire trail of trees and plant life(not always accurate, like the birch trees at end of trail. There is a description of a white oak which is not there.) Great trail for people who love to study nature -- trees and plants.

One of the nicest horses I have played. With the recent rains everything was Irish green and the greens were in spectacular shape. Just wish they had convenient food at the turn couldn't even get a hot dog within a quick amount of time. The manager was great and noticed my frustration and even offered to bring food out to whatever hole I was on!

Gorgeous, challenging course. You have to be strategic with where you land your balls, as most holes are short and hilly with plenty of dog legs. The friendliest staff we've encountered in our 10+ years of playing golf. Course is in perfect condition. Can't wait to play here again.
Natalie K — Google review
Beautiful course and very well maintained. Front 9 is longer and wider, Back 9 is more narrow and features elevation. The Patio Grill serves up delicious food and beers, with a smile. Easy to book online and friendly pro shop. Highly recommend.
Alex M — Google review
Enjoyed the course. Not a 5-star premier location, but will be back and have recommended to my friends in the high country to check it out. Lots of trees and challenge. Decided to leave a variety of golf balls on several holes.
Mike O — Google review
The course is beautiful and the fairways were great. The greens are really smooth but very quick. Make sure you leave your approach shot below the flag.

This is a best kept secret!! Staff is awesome and it’s a great mountain course.
Ann S — Google review
The first 9 is more open than the back 9,a nice course very well kept, the staff was great and gave me a booklet showing the layout. Would definitely recommend this course

5 stars! Played this course on a Saturday recently and loved it! Everything from the price, the beautiful course, and the staff all 5 ⭐. We drove up from Charlotte to get away from the crowded over priced courses and Linville Land Harbor Golf did not disappoint. I've been playing for over 20 years and this was truly one of the best golf experiences that I've had.

One of my favorite places in the Blue Ridge Parkway, this lookout is a great place to sit and watch the mountains and listen to the birds. On a recent mid-afternoon visit, I was able to hear a number of beautiful song birds including a red eyed vireo, a dark-eyed junco, and an ovenbird. An incredible, quiet forest is just a shirt walk away from this parking area. This place is best at sunrise and sunset with no crowds. Enjoy!

One of my favorite overlooks. There is a short trail to a better view & a view platform down a steep flight of stone stairs. Good view of Table Rock & Grandfather Mountain. You can see some without hiking, but not very well. I would not consider this overlook to be wheelchair accessible. Also, no restroom facilities.
LR P — Google review
Fantastic overlook! Great view and a nice trail that leads to even more. Plenty of quiet parking to relax on the parkway.
Walt W — Google review
Had our wedding ceremony here. The overlook is breathtaking, usually one has to hike a while to find a view like this. The stone immerses you into a fairytale with nothing but nature and mountains. At sunrise you can watch as the sun ascends over the mountaintops and valleys, and it is spectacular. It is a shame that so many respect nature so little and yet make it a point to come here, leaving trash behind. Do better.
Jacqueline T — Google review
Wow this gem is quite unassuming, when you pull into the parking lot it seems to just be a place to sit and picnic. Then after a very short walk you are presented with an epic view with a wonderful panoramic viewing spot down a few steps. We had no idea that was there but we're pleasantly surprised, we will be checking out the .6 mile trail next time we are on the parkway.
Dan W — Google review
One of the more beautiful spots we saw along the BRP.
Zach G — Google review
Breathtaking panoramic view from the point. Just walk few stairs from the parking and it will give you a stunning scenic views to relax and enjoy the nature. Worth taking few stairs.

I spoke to the contractor in charge of repairing the Helena destruction of this portion of the Parkway. He said the engineers have declared Bear Den Overlook as compromised. There are 52 landslides in the immediate area. The plan calls for the Bear Den Overlook to be torn down and rebuilt. They are actively working in the area and keeping all foot and bike traffic off the Parkway from Bear Den to Linville. Should take about five years.

Incredible 360° views at the peak of Hawksbill mountain, where you can see Grandfather & Sugar mountains off to one side, and Table Rock & Shortoff to the other. It's only a 2.6 mile drive down a rocky gravel road to the trailhead, and ~45 min hike to the summit from there (albeit a little steep at times with ~682 ft elevation change). You can also camp there (permits needed May-Oct 31st). Definitely worth the adventure!!
Anthony T — Google review
The trail is suitable for more experienced hikers as it can be extremely steep towards the end but you are definitely rewarded for your effort. It’s shaded most of the time so it protects you from the sun on a hot day. The road taking you to the parking lot is extremely bumpy and has some major holes which you need to be weary of but it’s an adventure that’s well worth it. Me and my wife had plenty of laughs and was in awe of the view. Please wear appropriate footwear and take more than enough water especially if it’s hot. I also recommend a hiking stick to help navigate the terrain. It’s super fun and a bit of a challenge with an epic view.
Owen D — Google review
There road to get there is very rough and you need a suitable vehicle. The trail is a difficult one, basically a climb up the mountain with tree roots and rocks the entire way up. The view is absolutely incredible once you make it. Coming down is easier of course. I doubt I try it ever again but glad I can say I did.
Idgy T — Google review
Beautiful trail with lots of wildlife. The trail is rocky and technical in some areas, and uphill most of the way but it levels out eventually and it's totally worth going all the way to the end! I trail run and opted to run back so I was able to complete it in about 2 hours.
Brittney B — Google review
The push at the end is well worth the reward. Great experience. The views are unreal. The road getting to the trail was a little rough in spots. However you do not need a 4-wheel drive vehicle like most suggest. You just need to navigate around some of the potholes and rocks if your in a car. I made the trip in a toyota corolla se with no issues. Just pay attention and drive slow. Parking is the worst thing about the trip. Very limited parking.
Landon B — Google review
Amazing hike, it’s only a mile-ish to the top and incredible views. Boots with ankle support are a must. Bring a headlamp and go for sunset!
Taylor W — Google review
Hard hike-uphill all the way. Would probably take most people about 20/30 minutes. Diffirent view points around the top. Road there was rough on my Nissan Altima🤣
Hari A — Google review
The summit is absolutely amazing! I've hiked a lot (east and west, including the AZ Wave) and this rates in my top 5. I would love to return and hike it in the fall. The trails requires some climbing so bring your strong knees. I thought it was moderate but my hiking buddies thought it was strenuous. My 1 year old pup thought it was a stroll in the park. The views are so gorgeous; it was hard to leave. It was definitely worth the effort. We had the entire place to ourselves for about an hour. We enjoyed lunch on the rocks before the clouds moved in and took our entire view. Highly recommend!

Iconic mountain in Pisgah National Forest, a popular destination for hiking & rock climbing.
You can't go wrong here. Great hikes, great climbing and awesome people. It does tend to get crowded though. There are a ton of other attractions within a short drive along the Linville Gorge area.
Richard H — Google review
Road heading to the trailhead is closed so be prepared to hoke from the bottom. Quite the hike up! Always great views. Hopefully the road will be open soon!
Drew S — Google review
My business, “Be Well Asheville” always is looking for spots like this to report on. As this was my first time there, I didn’t realize show epic it was until I got to the top! Amazing!
Travis R — Google review
Some of the best views are available atop of Table Rock. There are many trails to choose from should you want to explore other features nearby such as the chimneys and Linville gorge. BEWARE! There are no guard rails on top of the mountain. Kids and pets have to be watched carefully. You can either hike up which is around 3-4 miles or drive up to the base of the summit which leaves only a 1 mile hike to the very top. But the dirt roads going up there are HORRIBLY bumpy, washboard, rocky roads after rains. They do grade the roads to smooth them out but it can get quite dangerous due to the erosion. It will reek havoc on your car. I got an oil leak and one brake began to cease up on my truck by the time I got down. Plan on going 5-13mph. I recommend driving in via Table Rock road from highway 181 near Linville Gorge Gingercake Acres as seen on Google maps. This route has a shorter dirt road portion vs the other options. Make sure your vehicle is in good running condition and check your brakes! Car may overheat going up and brakes will get hot going down. I saw one car go over the side of the dirt road going too fast for the bumpy driving conditions. So drive slow especially on the sharp switch backs/turns. Otherwise it's a beautiful place and worth the trek at some point. There are bathrooms at the summit parking lot too but they are pretty gross and stinky so be warned.
Ronnie E — Google review
The day we visited it was foggy and drizzling but we still had a great time. The road up is narrow and had a lot of switchbacks but is accessible by most any vehicle. The trail is fairly easy but not terribly well marked. We didn't have a great view but the fall scenery made up for it.
Mark M — Google review
Agressive, hard 3.6 mile hike up(2200 feet hiking elevation climb) to Table Rock Summit plus return down. Poles are helpful but not necessary. We are pretty fit and it took 3 hours up (included lunch break) and 2.5 hours back down. Take waters, power snacks and/or light lunch. Be careful you actually start on the Summit trail as there are others, some much longer. Waterfalls and wading is only on the lowest section but there is a nice 3 mile loop around the lowest section if you don't want the agressive climb. There is a $7 per person fee upon entering. Senior discount too. If you are fit for agressive climb and desent, this hike is amazing with unbelievable views! FYI: Wear GOOD hiking treads.
Terri — Google review
Easy hike to the summit with excellent views! Be sure to watch your step on the way up, the trail is rocky. Multiple trails around the mountain. Rock climbing accessable. Bathrooms near parking lot.
Chris L — Google review
Hiked it when the park was closed, turned a 2 mile hike into a 5 mile hike. It was the best hike I ever did. There complete cloud coverage, and it was snowing when I started and it cleared just as I got to the top.
