Hot Springs, North Carolina, is known for its natural mineral hot springs, where visitors can soak in outdoor tubs overlooking the mountains and river. The town sits directly on the Appalachian Trail and along the French Broad River, making it a popular base for hiking, rafting, kayaking, and fishing. Its compact downtown offers a few local restaurants, outfitters, and historic lodging, giving the area a laid-back, small-town feel. Surrounded by Pisgah National Forest, it appeals to travelers looking for a quiet mountain getaway with easy access to outdoor activities.
With favorites like Artisun Gallery and Cafe, Bluff Mountain Outfitters, and Spring Creek Tavern, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Spring Creek Tavern and Smoky Mountain Diner so you can get the best taste of Hot Springs while you’re here. Hiking Trails
Max Patch is a renowned bald mountain in the region, featuring hiking trails and a section of the Appalachian Trail. Situated at 4,600 feet, it offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. While previously known for camping opportunities, recent changes have restricted camping and reduced parking to preserve the area's natural beauty. Visitors are encouraged to practice Leave No Trace principles and respect the environment.
Amazing views of western NC and eastern TN. We timed it out wrong so we missed the sunset, but it was still an amazing view. I recommend bringing chairs to sit at the top of waiting for the sunset or sunrise. It was very windy during our trip, and I suspect that is normal for the face of the bald, so secure your hats and sunglasses! Overall, a pretty easy hike for prime views.
Lindsay R — Google review
Such a beautiful place, especially during wildflowers bloom! The smell 😍 Although there is no restroom! And easy to keep off the trail, also better to wear long pants and cover your legs
Kasy H — Google review
Max Patch is absolutely breathtaking with rolling grassy balds and 360° mountain views that feel like you are standing on top of the world. But getting there is an adventure in itself! The last several miles of the drive are up a narrow, winding gravel road with blind curves and steep drop offs. My little sedan made it fine but I was gripping the wheel the whole time and it was definitely a white knuckle scary drive in spots. Take it slow and watch for oncoming cars. Once you reach the trailhead the hike is short and moderate and the payoff is instant with panoramic Blue Ridge views perfect for a picnic or just cloud watching. Tips: • Plan to leave before sunset unless you have a high clearance vehicle and nerves of steel. The road is even trickier in the dark. • Bring layers because the wind at the top can be surprisingly strong. • Pack out all trash since this fragile bald needs care. Even with the hair raising drive I would do it again in a heartbeat. The sunset from the summit is unforgettable so make sure you are already headed down the mountain when it starts!
Akshita A — Google review
Heavenly place. Easy hike, nothing steep. Toddlers friendly. No restrooms miles away from this place.
Sri P — Google review
Loved this hike. So beautiful. Get there early minimal parking..
Chris B — Google review
This mountain has a really beautiful view, and a lot of adventures to explore! Tbh, this is a great mountain 🏔️! But it's complicated to get to the mountain. Overall, I love this mountain! 11/10!!!
Luke M — Google review
Definitely the best place to see sunset around Smoky. And easy to get to the summit, you can drive the most way. If you like to go cross-country, you can try the other trail, instead of the main wide road. I used my Civic and made to the top. It is fun. It is a part of Appalachian trail, very cool place.
Kaiyu W — Google review
So pretty so worth it the walk is not far at all and it’s really easy from where you park. The roads are kind of tricky though to get there so just be careful!!

Appalachian Trail Head: South Hot Springs

4.8

Hiking area
Nestled in the Appalachian style, South Hot Springs offers private and romantic vacation rental cabins with all-wood interiors and tasteful lodge decor. The nearby Hot Springs Spa adds to the charm of this one-bedroom log cabin vacation. The well-maintained section of the Appalachian Trail (AT) promises a scenic 16-mile, 6-hour southbound hike with clear blazes and no obstructions.
In and out day hike. South bound, 16 miles, 6 hours. As always, this section of AT is well maintained, clearly blazed , no outgrown vegetation, no fallen trees, no serious corrosion, no illegal horse/atv riding. I can promise you the AT is the best trail in the eastern TN/mountain north Carolina, second to none. Probably the number of hikers on the trail is the key. I saw no less than 30 hikers today. I wish the Cumberland trail could have that foot traffic. The first 1.5 miles hike is challenging, steady climb. After that it is moderate up and down. Saw fall mushrooms are coming out. After Carenflo Gap about 1 mile, there is a lovely small water cascades, it is a good spot for snack break and turning point for back trip.
Craig L — Google review
Awesome section of the AT, goes right through Hot Springs :) Nice camping area right near the entrance of the trail, Beautiful :)
Dylan D — Google review
Amazing. Beautiful. Make sure you have an SUV, it will tear up a regular-size car up. The roads feel like a roller coaster. Not the one you want to be on. Other than that, pure magic.
Tyler H — Google review
Davenport Gap : Snowbird Mountain This trail starts with a lot of uphill but after the first stairs it goes to more mellow switchbacks. Not busy at all for a weekend in Oct.
Hiker S — Google review
This is where you pick up the AT from Hot Springs if you are heading south. Or, if you've been northbound, you have just arrived in civilization! Come in to town, check in to one of the fine establishments, and grab a beer!

Cute little coffee shop. There shop was destroyed in Helene so they are in this temporary space. Friendly staff. Clean restroom. We had a drip & a chi tea latte. Cute gifts too. Stop by and support them.

Very friendly staff. Great tea /coffee and plenty of neat gifts ! I think this may be at a temp location due to the hurricane. They were even giving out dry socks to through hikers in need! The rescued plants were really neat to see.
Courtney S — Google review
Appalachian hospitality at it's finest. Beautiful little small town coffee shop rebuilding in their community, just moments away from Hot Spring Spa. My zero sugar green protein smoothie was delicious! But we were there for Pasha's gem collection and shop in the back. While we snagged several gifts upfront, the gems salvaged from flood waters were the true treasure for us at this shop. I found a larger piece I've been searching quite a while for. Her assistant and the young man running the coffee shop were excellent hosts. We can't wait for a return visit, I only wish I'd gotten the sweet young people running the shop names, for next time!
Brenna T — Google review
Great coffee and amazing artwork all over ... I understand they moved and I'm not quite sure to where, so I'll have to go back to Hot springs and find out and update this post further

Headed south from Lexington and on a detour from I40 this great shop popped up and was just what we needed. Coffee, ice cream, nice folks, inviting, clean, and friendly are just a few words that seem perfect this lil store. Might make the detour the way I pass through the area from now on.

Fantastic place! Great service by the two different baristas who made great drinks. Young man’s music playlist was enjoyable. Made three visits while in the area.

Stayed in hot springs for the weekend and went every day to this shop! Staff was always friendly and coffee was absolutely delicious. Their chai latte was also very delicious! The space has comfortable seating options and quite the amount of crafts, jewelry, plants etc to wander around and look at! Also if you're an avid sticker collector of woodsy animal stickers, they've got quite the selection! This shop is all around cozy, quirky and full of fun artsy vibes! Absolute gem of a place!

Always a fun and different experience with every visit. As a gallery for local artists, the art can be consistent or vastly different, but always full of interesting things to see, and I love purchasing the art to support artists. From soap to watercolors to painted skulls to stickers, there is a little bit of everything. Also on site, the is a great coffee and ice cream shop. An affrogatto is the perfect mix of both.

Lisa M — Google review
I'm primarily writing a review of Broadwing Farm as a wedding venue, although i have stayed in the cabins many times over the weekend or during the week as a guest. My cabin stays were good except for the bed being extremely uncomfortable. The mattress was ancient and we stayed there so regularly, once a season, that we offered Broadwing Farm an unused mattress topper in hopes it would help which they declined. As far as the wedding venue, we had a very bad experience. I should never have had my wedding here due to the lack of basic infrastructure like running water and refrigeration and the fact that once we had paid the venue it was extremely difficult to get a hold of Gio, the owner of the wedding venue, or Shyanne, the land manager, to plan the wedding details. They did not get back to me in a timely manner and made it difficult for us to even see the venue to plan. The lack of infrastructure resulted in the catering being a disaster. Also, there were rules that were never disclosed until the weekend of the wedding. Then they were written in a book somewhere that my guests were supposed to read, which was unreasonable for members of a wedding party preparing for a wedding. We had specifically rented the wedding venue, including the barn chapel and both of the available cabins, for myself and my fiancee and immediate family which were in the wedding including my mother, her husband and my sister. Others in the wedding party stayed at the Hot springs Resort downtown Hot springs. Part of the reason we chose this venue is because we wanted to do a soak together in the hot tubs. However, at the last minute Shyanne left a message on my phone on Friday, which I did not receive in all the busyness of getting ready for my wedding, that we were not allowed to have anyone over to our cabin, even the wedding party. My mother had my 2 brothers who were in the wedding and staying at the Hot Springs Resort downtown Hot Springs over that evening and they were soaking when Shyanne showed up with a flashlight at night at their cabin and hot tub which surprised and scared them and felt to them like a violation of privacy, especially since the rules had not been communicated clearly to them or me. The day of the wedding was total chaos since Gio, who had agreed to move and set up chairs for us, was nowhere to be found. The barn was a mess from things from previous events and I had to clean it up in my wedding dress and makeup while all my wedding vendors were arriving since no one else from Broadwing Farm was around to do it. What I didn't realize when booking this venue was how inexperienced they really were. It seems like they had had one other local wedding that had turned into a huge party and gotten out of hand and they were jaded as a result. I was told that Shyanne could serve as the day of wedding coordinator and although she tried her best her inexperience showed. At the reception with an open bar a couple of my family members got drunk and belligerent and Shyanne was arguing with them after she had already made a poor first impression with the flashlight the night before. At the end of the night after my husband and I had retired to our cabin, my brother and his girlfriend who were drunk came back to the venue to look for a missing phone and they were told they could not look for it and had to leave the property immediately. Apparently there was a verbal altercation and my brother was pushed physically by the owner of the land. My brother is not a violent person and did not fight back physically. In fact, he has never had any altercations with anyone before or since. Even though he left the premises the owner of the land called the local police and had him arrested and put in jail which apparently the owner of the land could do since he knows the local police. The charges were dropped in the morning after my brother spent the night in the local jail. Although my brother was belligerent i don't believe his behavior warranted physical violence from the land owner.. To read the rest of my experience go to Y. Text limited here.

My wife and I stayed 3 nights at The Pine Cabin on Broadwing Farm. This was our 3rd trip to Hot Springs but our first at Broadwing. This has been our favorite location so far. We love the proximity to town and how secluded the cabin is. We loved the history of the cabin and the size of it. The view is one of the best we have had. Please be aware the main bed is up the spiral staircase. The bathroom is downstairs. Late night potty breaks can be interesting. lol. The jacuzzi is ready to be replaced but after hiking all day a warm tub is good even if the jets aren’t all working or able to be turned up. We will try to stay here again in the future we liked it so much. Even with the jacuzzi not really working great. The stairs really weren’t a deal breaker but it could be for a lot of people.

Our small family of 4 spent 3 amazing nights at the Pine cabin. The view from the deck was so beautiful, very quiet and peaceful place to be for recharging your energy. The cabin is spotless clean, and has everything you need. Our favorite part of the stay was the private hot tub outside, right next to the cabin. Morning dip with birds singing, evening dip with millions of stars and crickets chirping. The location is very convenient. Super close from the town. It was just perfect. Cannot wait to go back!

Our family stayed in the Pine. I only wish we had stayed longer...I could definitely live like that forever! The hot tub gave me back pain relief I haven't had in sooo long as a Nurse, my boy LOVED the hot tub and my partner and I rekindled many of the reasons we love eachother! Felt private, had all the amenities anyone could ask for. Right in the town, great hikes nearby, we will DEFINITELY be back! Thanks Pete! Your love and effort you have put into these places are so apparent and appreciated!

Stopped here for dinner and we were not disappointed! The service was excellent and the atmosphere relaxed. Really cool vibe! The food was so good. All my pics have bites missing because once you get started you don’t wanna stop! The fried pickles with ranch were delicious! I ordered the Cajun Philly, which was phenomenal, and my husband really enjoyed his cheeseburger as well! The homemade fries were on point. We rarely get dessert but when I saw a sign that said their cheesecake of the day was oatmeal scotchie we had to try and OH MY SOUL it was amazing! I wish we were staying longer to try more of their menu!

We were excited to be able to stop by the Spring Creek Tavern while in Hot Spings. They have recently reopened after sustaining damage during Hurricane Helene. Their cheese sticks are amazing. They're filled with pepperoni.

I’m not sure why our experience was not consistent with the good reviews left by others. Our group of 4 dined on Oct. 23 around 2:00. Our appetizer, cheese sticks arrived quickly and were very good. However, our entrees seemed to take forever. Two of us ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich. The chicken was overly breaded and so crispy it was leaning on being burnt. My wife ordered a philly cheese steak which seemed to be filled with mostly cheese and vegetables but not much meat. My friend’s cheesesteak arrived with the hoagie cut completely through so that the contents fell out when trying to eat it. He was thankful for a fork. The fries tasted stale and we left most of them. The bright spot was the porch overlooking the river.

We went to a lot of places for food within a 2 hour drive around Hot Springs for our honeymoon over the course of a week, this place is the one that surprised us the most. If it wasn’t so far from where we were staying I would have gone every day for lunch. Maybe it’s just my taste buds but the Philly they had is fantastic, so were the fried pickles.

Came to eat here twice while in town doing some time on the AT, and we can't wait to come back! My husband and I had country friend steak, the breakfast skillet, chop steak breakfast meal, and the BBQ burger. So much good food. It was all so good. Amazing biscuit and gravy. Great okra. The breakfast skillet was perfection, and man, all the portions are ginormous . The staff was the kindest. Sorry, I was too hungry to take pics of our food 😅 So glad to have yall open and Hot Springs beginning to reimerge!

We were directed here by an AT Trail Angel and it did not disappoint. Friendly staff, great food, nice mountain atmosphere. Not sure why we have never tried apple butter with sweet potato fries in the past ! The veggie burrito was great and the pies were amazing.

Great food and service. I had the Philly sandwich and it was portioned perfectly. Not too stuffed or too bready. I thought the curly fries were a little overcooked but they were still good. I love that the drinks are served in oversized mason jars. We had a short wait (~20mins) but it was at peak lunch time 12:30pm. Great place to stop by after a hike.

I was visiting my girlfriend for the weekend and she took me to this diner for breakfast. I had the best southern breakfast I've ever had in my life, from the perfectly made cinnamon rolls made on Saturdays to the fried green tomatoes. To my egg sandwich, everything was perfection. Loved love this place.Service was great food was phenomenal. If you're visiting hot springs, stop by and make sure you order the cinnamon rolls before they're gone.

Best food and service that we've had in the mountains. Fried green tomatoes are awesome I really love this burger. My wife had the country fried steak man it was so tender it's not like any we've ever had in the mashed potatoes homemade you can tell they're really good. My son got the Buffalo wrap a blue chicken and some of the most tender chicken and very good.

Ate there today and had an outstanding skillet breakfast! Very delicious with a good portion of food. Everything I've had here in the past has never failed to be delicious. Definitely a notch above the typical breakfast or restaurant nook. My only complaint would be the coffee. The coffee was very weak and would be described as brown water. This was the only thing that would be a disappointment. Service was very good and everyone very friendly. Make that coffee stronger!

I've been coming here since I was just a little girl. The food is great, and the fried green tomatoes are delicious. I really enjoy looking at the pictures and artwork. Just a very calming place for good food and great company!

This little dinner servers the best breakfast hands down. The server was friendly and attentive to our needs. The food was delicious and we left so full. The portions are huge, come with an appetite. Stop in for a bite!
