Historic Walking Areas
The Painted Canyon Visitor Center offers a stunning view of the expansive Badlands, making it an ideal starting point for exploring Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Located in the South Unit, this center provides essential amenities such as souvenir shopping and water refills. Visitors can also explore exhibits to learn more about the park before embarking on their journey. The center is adjacent to the Painted Canyon Overlook, which offers breathtaking views of the striated hills and rolling prairie.
If you're short on time but still want a taste of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Painted Canyon is your best bet. Located in North Dakota right off I-94, this free roadside stop offers the *most stunning panoramic view* of the park’s South Unit. I visited both the South Unit and this viewpoint—and honestly, this was the highlight. It’s not just a scenic overlook; there’s a visitor center, restrooms, making it a perfect quick stop during your road trip. The landscape opens up into dramatic, colorful badlands that perfectly capture the essence of TRNP. This is the view you see from deep inside the South Unit—without the drive or time commitment. Don’t miss this spot. It’s free, beautiful, and effortless.

Lots of parking. Beautiful views all around. Great variety of wildlife. The visitors center has very clean bathrooms and a good selection of survivors. Great trails with stunning views. Dogs are not allowed on the trails but are ok in the parking lot and around the visitors center.

Stopped here before heading into Theodore Roosevelt national park. Also here are photos once inside the badlands saw wild horses buffalo deer and prairie dogs they are so cute. I would say if you have the chance go and check it out beautiful place.

Don't think if you stop here that you will see the Theodore Roosevelt national Park. Unless you mean from about 8 miles away you can see 1 butte. Yes it's a rest area with parking for about 12 semis, trailers or motorhomes and about 30 cars. There are sheltered picnic area but most are still in the wind. It is almost always very windy here. They have restrooms but mainly while the park store is open. The visitor center is a normal national Park visitor center where you can talk to a ranger pick up maps of the park, but souvenirs, get your passport cancellation stamps and more. But the actual park is about 8+miles west of here so be prepared to drive there. Note there is a lot of road construction in the area and traffic backs up quickly from about 9 am until 6pm. Luckily you do not need to pay to stop at this visitor center, the other 2 are behind the park entrance which require payment to enter. Give this review a like 👍 or mark as helpful♥️. We have a separate review of the North and South parks and visitor centers to help you decide if you want to see or stop at those. If you do buy your park pass online before entering and don't ask any questions at the entrance, that is what the visitor center is for.

Well... don't let the "one mile" trail fool you, you go down and have to come back up, which is, 250ish feet!!! So I don't get out much so it really kicked my butt. But I saw school age kids doing it and retired aged people. I don't didn't see the older people come back up, just go down haha. Aside from all of that, absolutely beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. You think you went to a place on a different planet. It was definitely worth it. If you plan on doing multiple hikes, you might want to make this one a "my only hike today" hike if you know what I'm trying to say.
Mallory S — Google review
Loop trail here offers great views and doable for families! National park staff has been friendly and helpful at each of our stops. Lots of shaded picnic areas available.
Heidi S — Google review
Stopped here before entering the badlands It has gorgeous views of the painted canyon. There are trails you can go on and it's just a nice place to stop and check out stretch your legs.
CBU — Google review
If you're driving along I-94, make sure to stop at Painted Canyon. The views are absolutely stunning, and you'll get to see bison roaming free in their natural habitat. It's definitely worth the stop for an unforgettable experience and some amazing photo opportunities!

American restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Medora, North Dakota, the Farmhouse Cafe is a delightful spot that captures the essence of local dining. This cozy eatery offers a warm atmosphere where visitors can enjoy hearty meals made from fresh ingredients. The menu features an array of American classics, making it a perfect stop for breakfast or lunch after exploring the stunning landscapes nearby.
During our time in Medora, we visited this spot three times, twice for breakfast and once for lunch. We had three different servers (Sebastian, Jo Jo, and Kinga) and each provided excellent service. While I’m not sure if all of them were visiting/working from outside the U.S., I know Sebastian was from Romania. They were all passionate about their work, extremely friendly, and made our visits memorable. As for the food, you really can’t go wrong with either breakfast or lunch. The portions were generous, and the prices were fair comparable to other restaurants in the area, especially considering the quality of both the food and service. If you’re a family looking for a welcoming spot in Medora, this is a place that will take great care of you. You’ll feel right at home.

We stopped here early on a Sunday for breakfast on the way out of town. It was already pretty busy but we were seated pretty quickly and our food was very fast at coming out. I could see this place filling up fast so my recommendation would be to go early or be prepared for a wait. The food was very good as well. I would say a “wait here to be seated” sign would help clear up any confusion as to whether you wait at the hostess stand or enter the restaurant when there’s no one tending the hostess stand.
Morgan W — Google review
Much smaller inside than I expected, but the wait wasn't very long (even for a Sunday morning). The wait staff was fantastic and the food was not only good, but a lot. In addition to regular syrup for my pancakes, they had a chocolate sauce that was excellent (so I didn't actually use the regular syrup). Definitely recommend!
Chip E — Google review
We had breakfast here. Like most of North Dakota, people here drink weak coffee, so don't expect a good buzz in the morning. The omelet was really good and FTW, it included French toast! A first for me and a pleasant surprise. The server was super friendly. She gave us some history and told us what it is like to live in rural western North Dakota. This is probably the best place to have breakfast on the southern part of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
Steve T — Google review
The waitress was courteous, kind, and efficient. The food was so delicious that the cook was personally tipped. Thank you for the experience.
LeDeidre G — Google review
Loved absolutely everything about this place. The food was great and portions definitely dont leave you wanting. The plate shown is the chicken fried steak, out of frame there's also eggs that came with that. The burger we had for dinner the evening before had portions just as generous. Price is reasonable. The atmosphere is very small town and homey. Restaurant is clean and well run. But my absolute favorite part was the service. Our server for dinner the evening before was Jody and she was extra amazing. Really, really sweet lady that made the experience that much better. We saw her the next morning for breakfast and she remembered us and asked about our activities we had talked about the evening before. Our server for breakfast was also amazing. Honestly, it was just impeccable service in a charming town with portions you cant argue with. You can't really ask for more. Definitely check it out if you're in Medora.
Alecia H — Google review
The perfect breakfast before a full day at Teddy Roosevelt National Park. The breakfast is well priced and a great value for the amount of food you get. The owners chocolate syrup is an amazing compliment to the croissant French toast! Fast, friendly, delicious place to eat whenever you stop by Medora!

Boots Bar & Grill is a laid-back establishment in Medora, ND, offering a relaxed atmosphere and a menu featuring steaks, burgers, and other classic dishes. The cozy interior includes a patio for outdoor dining. It's one of the best places to eat in Medora according to TripAdvisor reviews. With its homey digs and selection of brews and wines, it's an ideal spot to unwind after exploring the wide-open spaces that define this charming town.
Great local restaurant and bar. Nice menu with appetizers, salads, burgers and more along with a full service bar. Domestic, imports and local craft beer available. Authentic atmosphere-there were many locals in the restaurant which lets you know it is good. Prices were competitive and the service was great! Would highly recommend!
Kristie B — Google review
This is a great place to have beers and hang-out. It's loud. The food is passable. It's standard American beer hall food. I found the salad a bit over-dressed but this is my fault for not asking for "lightly dressed". The bison burger is a bit dry, so you'll need lots of condiments. The pizza had passable crust. Medora is the middle of nowhere, and so for the price, everything is as expected.
Steve T — Google review
This was a good family place. For as packed as it was we was helped quickly . The food came out just as quick. I had a burger that had peanut butter and spicy jam. It was fire. I mean fire. My cousin paid so I don’t know how much the bill was but there plates looked good to

We stopped in here twice for dinner during our time in Medora. On our first visit, I had the Bourbon BBQ Burger, which was much better than the burger I had at the Little Missouri Saloon, though to be fair, it wasn’t a direct comparison since I ordered an Elk Burger there. The French fries at Boots Bar & Grill were also noticeably better than those at Little Missouri. Our first server, Jadon B., was excellent, friendly and attentive. Our second server, Bruce C., was so-so. As for the pizza, it wasn’t exceptional, but for being away from the Chicagoland area, it was above average. In fact, our group ordered it twice during our visits. For those looking for a livelier atmosphere, this is likely the spot you’ll want to visit in Medora. It has a more energetic vibe compared to other places in town.

Stopped here mid September on the tail end of our vacation. We asked our hotels front desk staff thier favourite restaurant in town and he told us to go here. The food was amazing, the service was great and the atmosphere was nice, it was a warm evening so we enjoyed the enclosed patio and saw 3 deer out the back of the restamunching on there diner as well. We had the steak nachos which were the BEST nachos we have EVER had. Highly recommend.

Both the pb&j burger and the Fish tacos were great!!! Would recommend the sweet potato fries as well. The tacos were especially good and that’s what I’d get if I returned!

En route to Montana and we stopped in Medora for a couple nights. The first place we dined at was Boots due to its ratings and the menu overall looking the best. Came at around 5 PM on a Saturday and they weren’t that busy. We got a seat at the bar upstairs where our waitress was amazing. Super friendly, chatty, and loved talking about the history of the town and gave some great menu suggestions. I got the White Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and my partner got the Killdeer sandwich (basically a Philly cheesesteak). We both shared each. Overall, both were fantastic! The chicken sandwich was flavorful and the sauce was great. The cheesesteak was great also. We ended up coming back the next day and I got the Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza. I was blown away by it as well. The crust was crispy and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. Overall, Boots is definitely a winner! If you’re staying in Medora, this is THE local place to go! I’ll easily come back.

The boot salad with chicken was good but the chicken was reheated and the rest of the food was pretty good The rest of us had burgers that were really good. Seasoned fries are awesome

The Cowboy Cafe in Medora, North Dakota offers a diverse menu featuring fresh garden salads, bacon-wrapped steaks, and tantalizing Buffalo Osso Bucco. It is located near other dining options like Maltese Burger, Badlands Pizza and Saloon, and Boots Bar and Grill. The restaurant also provides outdoor seating for visitors to enjoy the pleasant weather while savoring their meals.
Here, every dish is extremely delicious. The boss and staff are very warm-hearted. Especially the homemade caramel rolls, I've dined here many times. It offers the most authentic cowboy flavor, and everyone visiting Medora must give it a try! Cash only!

Had the hot beef and it was voted number one in North Dakota for a reason. Got it with a side of cottage cheese. That mixed together is a match made perfect and a great reminder of my childhood. Give this place a try if you're in Medora.
Eric C — Google review
Well little restaurant was quite the unexpected gem. From the hospitality to the 100% homemade food. I honestly can't say enough wonderful things about this place. If you are headed to TRNP make sure to add the Cowboy Cafe as your stopping place to eat. 10/10

Cowboy Cafe in Medora is my 100th review! The pictures tell the story about the meals (Hot Beef, Pulled Pork special, kids chicken nugget meal (in the car) and chicken tenders and hash brown. Lots of cowboy and rodeo photos on the walls, always pay homage to the “Six Pack” (ask if you don’t know). The hot beef is the #1 in North Dakota for a reason!! Unknown to us, they dropped a chicken strip on delivery to our table. They went and grilled a replacement and brought it out on its own plate to make sure we weren’t short-changed. They had old fashioned Sarsaparilla root beer! The place is cash only when we visited. Food was very prompt!
Deepak J — Google review
Great little cafe, great food and fast friendly service. Pulled pork sandwich special with baked beans and coleslaw was delicious.
Mary K — Google review
Great owner run place. Cash only. Not very large and we had a 20-30 minute wait (mostly in line outside).
Paula H — Google review
Great place for lunch! We rolled through during the middle of the week while visiting the national park! Highly recommend the turkey swiss on focaccia as well as the cowboy corn poppers.
Sophie G — Google review
Very local joint, cash only business operated by some young girls. If you like sweets they make really good very very sweet caramel roll, still warm served. Had the French toast with eggs for my breakfast it was mediocre but does its job. The toasts are not the thick cut toast so it was a bit bland. The price are cheap so it’s still a great place to get something to eat in the morning There are a lot of locals and the decor is very western, all the cowboy posters and pictures on the wall.

Immerse yourself in the rich history of the old West and its modern-day counterpart at the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. Located in Medora, this museum offers a close-up look at everything the town has to offer, including the famous Medora Musical. But that's not all - Theodore Roosevelt National Park is also nearby, known for its stunning wildlife and outdoor activities.
The North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame is a fun tribute to a way of life. The museum has a small theater that showed two films while we were there. The first was about cowboys and the second was more about the history of the area. Exhibits focused on early cowboys, the cattle trails, Native Americans, and rodeo legends and honors of the Medora area. We did not visit the 2nd level of the museum. The exhibits are very well laid out. We noted that the museum had plans to expand in the future, which may allow for expanded exhibits as well.
Dawn J — Google review
While this is definitely a niche interest, it's perfect for Medora. The displays are thoughtful and many were unlike anything I've seen elsewhere. Kids are free on Sundays, which is when we happened to stumble in and visit. That was a fun surprise and bonus.

Tons of informative exhibits and well laid out. It was pretty cool to learn about cowboys and their way of life. You can spend anywhere from 20 min to few hours here depending on your schedule. Admission fee of $9 for adults.

This is a great little museum in Medora, ND that is definitely worth seeing if you are in the area visiting Theodore Roosevelt National Park. There is a variety of things covered in the museum, not just cowboy history...
James F — Google review
Excellent displays of North Dakota cowboys and cowgirls. Great movies and artwork. Wish that they sold prints of these in the store of the old cowboy photos and artwork. Must see if In Medora.
Beth P — Google review
So much history in this building! Kids are free Sundays and Wednesdays, so if you plan on bringing the family I would suggest going one of those days for some cost savings. When you first go in, on the left, is a small theater room where you can watch a short video. We didn’t take the time to view it, but there were a couple families in there as we passed and everyone was extremely focused on the screen, so it must be good! They’ve got a small, cute shop with some great items for purchase as well!

A nice museum to visit if you enjoy the history of cowboys and if you don't it's still enjoyable. Price of admission is good. Friendly staff. Two floors of various items with elevator access.

Medora Uncork'd is a surprising gem in the Old West, offering an industrial interior and sultry red lighting that sets the stage for enjoying a wide selection of wines along with delicious flatbreads, panini, and pastas. Located near Theodore Roosevelt National Park in Medora, this spot features an extensive wine bar and gift shop, offering specialty pizzas, juicy steaks, charcuterie boards, and unique appetizers.
Tried the Blueberry BBQ Meatball Pizza and Wrangler Ginger Margarita — both unique and flavorful. The pizza was big enough for two. The place was empty when we arrived, but the service was excellent. Parking was a bit tricky. Bonus: there’s a small stage inside, likely for live music. A cozy spot worth checking out!

If I lived closer, I would eat here again and again! My partner and I were thoroughly impressed with every aspect of our dining experience. We shared a BBQ blueberry meatball flatbread—inventive and delicious with a nice balance of flavors. I wish continued success for this establishment.

The wine selection was great. I recommend the raspberry chocolate wine. The first night we carried out a Thai chicken pizza and cauliflower cheese bread and it was delicious. The second time we went I had the cheesesteak tortellini and my girlfriend had the blueberry feta ricotta flat bread pizza it was very good. So much so that before we left town we ordered two more dinners to take home that evening. We bought 4 different bottles of wine which the gave us 20%off and we each had a wine flight. Then finished it off with some of their homemade cheesecake. You must check this place out it’s amazing.
Mr H — Google review
The positives we were sat fast, granted it wasn't very busy. Our drink order was taken fairly quickly. The garlic bread that came with the pasta was good. The negatives the food did not have any seasonings or flavor. I ordered the fettuccine, the pasta was over cooked and the sauce had zero salt or flavor to it. It reminded me of school cafeteria food. The chicken was cooked well but again had zero flavor or seasonings. My wife got a pizza. The dough was odd, it was more of a bread dough not a pizza dough. Again no seasonings, no salt in the dough. It lacked cheese and again over all lacked flavor. Some balsamic glaze would of made it pop! We would of told the waitress but she didn't check on us even one time.
G&C C — Google review
We came here one evening for appetizers and then another night for dinner (because we loved our experience earlier in the week so much). The lasagna was excellent, great wine (and beer) selection. Fantastic staff (Val was amazing)! If you go to Medora, visit Uncork’d, you will not be disappointed.
Shannon C — Google review
I was blown away by this unpretentious place in the small town of Medora ND. With a little trepidation I ordered the Blueberry Meatball pizza (actually ordered a half and half pizza with the other half the Blueberry, ricotta and arugula pizza). Both halves were good, but the Blueberry Meatball was outstanding, slightly sweet blueberry barbecue sauce with slightly spicy meatballs. My wife had the Thai Chicken flatbread which was also outstanding. I travel a lot and have ordered pizza pretty much all over the world (Italian pizza: pretty meh), and this is one of the best pizza joints I've ever visited. Kudos to Medora Uncork'd for making the effort and taking a risk to be different.

OMG, the fettuccine Alfredo jumps off the plate and is arguably the most delicious one I’ve ever had! Great, beautiful restaurant in the tourist town of Medora, ND. The decor is modern, bistro/wine bar/gastrropub which is what you’d expect with a name like Uncorked. The food was delightful. The kids all ordered various versions of spaghetti. The pesto sandwich could been improved by being toasted. Highly recommend in a town of fun recommends!
Deepak J — Google review
I came because I had heard about the BBQ blueberry meatball pizza. I had to try it. The restaurant was not busy at all. Only 1 other table. The staff were super friendly and attentive. I had a local beer on tap, the wedge salad and pizza. The pizza is large enough to feed 2-3 people. I took 1/2 home for lunch the next day. The pizza didn’t disappoint. It was a combination of sweet, tangy and spicy flavors. The atmosphere is ok. A bit cold for my liking in a western town.

Date: 28 June, 2025 Ordered: Beef Steak with french fries, and a garlic bread. (You can choose other sides as well) Taste: Loved it. Price: $18 Atmosphere: Unique decoration. It was lunch time, so it was crowded. Service: Had to wait for 40 minutes to get our order. There was too much rush but only two servers were there to help everyone. Do I recommend this place? Of Course!

The venue is in beautiful Medora ND just outside of Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the terrain is gorgeous. Our server started out "cold", not engaging and answering with short, curt comments. Thankfully she did warm up as the dinner progressed. All of our burgers were very good and they are big!! I had the elk burger which was fantastic. One of my daughter's had the turkey sandwich and she thought it was great. The bread they served it on appeared to be a sourdough w/cranberries and seasoning in it. I would definitely go back!

My girlfriend myself and our little dog came and ate hear about once a day if not more. The buffalo burgers are to die for so are the elk burgers. The staff was amazing so kind to all 3 of us. I would eat here everyday if I could. Make sure to stop in downstairs bar is very cool Dollar bill stapled to the wall door handles look like shotguns and revolvers to enter the building awesome place.

What a wonderful place right against Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It’s got my kind of food, sandwiches, burgers, steaks and an occasional salad. You won’t be disappointed if you stop and eat. We sat on the outside deck and admired the rugged terrain that makes up this little town. Full of culture and history. So glad we stopped. Thank you for a kind experience.

Old west Saloon vibes... I ordered a beer, the bartender knew nothing about the beers on tap. I then ordered the little Missouri Sirloin medium rare, came out very rare. I was brushing flies off me the entire time I was here... nice theme, maybe stop for a drink but I'd eat elsewhere.

It was late when I left Theodore Roosevelt park. This looked better and more western than the place across the street. Glad I stopped here and they were open. Ribeye steak was great. We had a table on the second floor deck with outstanding views of Medora. Our server was exceptionally effective and welcoming despite seemingly handling twice as many guests as would be typical. My delicious walleye dinner was more than I expected.
Elizabeth S — Google review
Out of all the places we visited in Medora, Little Missouri Saloon & Dining Room ranked at the bottom of our list. Perhaps it was just an off night, but the service was average, and the Elk Burger was just okay. I can’t fairly compare it to other Elk Burgers, as this was either my first or second time trying one. The fries were below average and didn’t leave much of an impression. One of my biggest concerns here was the pricing. They charge $1 for a slice of cheese and $2 for grilled onions, adding an extra $3 to an already $18 burger. While I understand prices can run higher in a small tourist town, it felt excessive. Additionally, we noticed a credit card processing fee automatically added to the bill, even though our group pays in cash. That seemed like an unnecessary charge and felt like another way to squeeze extra money from customers who might not notice. Hotel
Rough Riders Hotel is a casual accommodation option with classic rooms and a Western-style restaurant/bar, offering free Wi-Fi. The hotel has an Old West feel with modern amenities and is ideally located downtown. Guests have praised the atmosphere and ambiance of the property, as well as the delicious breakfast menu at Theodore's restaurant. The lobby exudes a rustic charm with a sizable library fireplace lounge, while the staff is described as accommodating. Although breakfast is not included, there are recommendations for nearby dining options.
We spent two days here. Great location for Theodore Roosevelt National Park. C Remodeled with all the comforts but true to the old west feel. Service was efficient and friendly.

This looked like a great location and indeed it was. They had amazing staff! We had been hiking all morning until check in so we were sweaty and exhausted when we arrived. Our rooms were not ready so they quickly shifted us into rooms that were ready so we didn’t have to wait. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous, the rooms were very clean and comfortable and I would highly recommend!

Very nice hotel with many updated features. Sadly, no maid service. Is that a thing of the past? Also, one grumpy front desk person....works evenings, I believe his name is Jerome. Overall, a nice place.

This is as close to a perfect hotel as I've ever stayed in. If you're in the area make a point to stay if you need a stopover. The town is super cool, the hotel and bar and restaurant are amazing. What a treat.

Don't stay at the "Wooly Boys" house, or at least do so eyes wide open. We were a family of 5 so booked this room. It's not at the hotel - is a small building a few blocks away in an alley across from a laundromat, there are no hotel services. It's a fine room but you are not staying at the "Rough Riders" hotel except for check in. Does the job.

Located in Medora, North Dakota, Badlands Pizza Parlor offers a diverse menu featuring fresh garden salads, delectable brussel sprouts, bacon-wrapped steaks, and tantalizing buffalo osso bucco. The restaurant is a great dining option after grabbing some grub at nearby eateries like Maltese Burger, Boots Bar and Grill, or Cowboy Cafe.
This was a great dinner stop for us! Went on a Sunday evening around 7pm and there was no wait. The staff were very friendly and quick to serve! We got the vegetarian pizza which was perfect to share with two people and tasted great!

Grabbed a pizza before the Musical. Kiubber took care of us and did a great job!! I couldn’t decide what beer to order and he recommended the Badlands Gold and I really enjoyed it! Hubby even thought it was pretty tasty and he’s not a beer guy. He did enjoy his Merlot though. Pizza was good, just wish it came out piping hot! Great spot for big groups or families.

We come to the musical every year and eat at Badlands Pizza. Last year they had the buffet which I really liked because I think it moved the People through much faster. I love their taco pizza as I don’t get that anymore since Happy Joe’s in Dickinson closed. This year we went to Badlands PIzza like we do every year and not only was the buffet gone, and it was back to ordering off the menu, they no longer have taco pizza. That was the only reason I ever came to Badlands Pizza. So disappointed they took it off the menu. Probably won’t be back, as that was the only reason we came here to eat, the service was great though, as was the atmosphere.

If you have hungry little buckaroo's be sure to stop at Badlands Pizza! We ordered 3 kids pizzas during our road trip and a large Pizza for the adults thinking the kids pizzas would be maybe 6 inches. When they arrived they were 10-12 inches! We could easily have ordered less but were pleasantly surprised the size for the cost. We also ordered the garlic cheese bread and they were a cheese filled garlic breadsticks that everyone enjoyed! The only negative about our experience was that it was incredibly loud as it is one big room so conversation was hard and then when trying to leave it took an especially long time to just get the bill and a box even though it wasn't very busy. Overall we would definitely come back and maybe take advantage of their order ahead or grab and go area!
Jess R — Google review
It was very good Pizza, my wife and I enjoyed the thin crust. The nice sauce, the cowboy pizza was particularly tasty.
Jonathan S — Google review
We were told upon arrival that our pizza would take 30-40 minutes. We were prepared to wait a while, but I think they forgot our order! After over an hour, we asked for more water, and our waiter explained that they were out of the appetizer we had ordered. He provided us with cheese stuffed garlic bread on the house. It wasn't terribly warm. We watched pizza come to table after table, many of whom had arrived after us. We finally got our pizza after about an hour and a half. It was very good, and we received 25% off due to the mixup, but the service wasn't great. It seems they have more tables than the employees can handle.
Laura C — Google review
Just say no to this place. Ate here a year ago and it was great. Came in the for the Fourth of July and wow. What a change. First pizza was raw second pizza had so much grease it just ran off. English is clearly the second language here from the employees as well. And last but not least their 7 up tasted like dirty dish water. So save yourself the money and just go elsewhere.
Billie S — Google review
First thing in the door the hostess spoke little English and was rude about seating us. She was perturbed about us asking for a booth but sat us there anyway. It was 4:30 on a Saturday and not too busy. When are pizzas came they were cold and we had to ask for plates. We weren’t done eating and a young girl came to remove our plates and clean the table. My husband said several times that we weren’t done yet. I’m not sure if she understood English because she went ahead and removed our plates. We definitely will not go back and would not recommend to a friend or relative.

The Medora Musical is a beloved summer attraction at the Burning Hills Theater, offering an outdoor extravaganza that celebrates the Western heritage and Theodore Roosevelt. Since its debut in 1965, this country western variety show has been entertaining audiences with singing, dancing, and a reenactment of Roosevelt's charge during the battle of Big San Juan Hill. The performance culminates in a spectacular fireworks finale. Visitors can also opt for a behind-the-scenes tour for an additional fee.
Highly recommend to take time and see the show. Performers and band are wonderful. The variety act was great too. Show is 2 hours long with an intermission. They invite the little ones on stage. So cute. We were in section 4 row G. Perfect location to see all the action on stage. There is an elevator or walkway to the mezzanine level. If you don’t want to or can’t take stairs, I recommend the upper level. There are several stairs to get where we sat. When the show is over they dismiss by row. This was so nice and controlled the vehicles exiting.
Debby B — Google review
The musical was absolutely amazing in an outdoor setting. Due to smoke from the Canadian fires, they had to shorten their performance. But it was still enjoyable. The horses we're incredible in their performance. Highly recommend. The town of Medora is very convenient to the south entrance of Theodore Roosevelt's National Park.
Marlene D — Google review
We caught the last show of the season. The set was neat. You could see a lot of work was put into making it what it is. The kids portion was awkward and uncomfortable. They taught the kids how to sign This Little Light of Mine. Didn't know I was going to church too. And the mascots were staring at the adult audience the entire time. Just, why? Seemed creepy and just odd. The cover songs for the rest of the show were entertaining enough. The buildings moving and the horses added absolutely nothing to the show and seemed more effort than they were worth. The act after the intermission was promising. Started out great, but then the rest of the show got rained out. It was an experience for sure, but not the sort of thing I would recommend to anyone traveling out that way.
Glorkar F — Google review
This is one of the best, if not the best shows we have seen. We highly recommend going. We have met families that this is an annual event. The show has been going on for 60 years.

We all loved the Medora Musical. All of the staff was welcoming from the moment we arrived until we left. Great views of the show from our seats. It kept our attention the entire way through. It was well worth it and we’re glad we went!
Stephanie B — Google review
Through a communication error, we bought tickets for two separate nights. We enjoyed the first show so much that we decided to experience the show again on the following evening. The performances were professionally performed and produced in a way that was both patriotic and spiritual. The steak dinner was passable, but the Musical was exceptional. The views surrounding the stage area are beautiful. You can't do much better than a day driving the Theodore Roosevelt South Unit loop, and an evening enjoying the Medora Musical.
Dave M — Google review
First time going to the musical. I felt the second half was better than the first. Beautiful facility and landscape. We used a shuttle from our hotel, but it probably wasn't necessary, as it was easy to find and parking looked ample.
Laura B — Google review
This was THE BEST way to finish out our Fourth of July celebration in Medora. All I can say is get your friends and family and GO!! The musical is different every year and they knocked it out of the park this year, the 60th Anniversary of Medora musical. Talent all around and so well organized. They even had a spot for kids that was so special, the environment was laid back and family oriented. The weather was perfect (it’s an outdoor venue)! Just go, it was fabulous!!

The Medora Pitchfork Steak Fondue Dinner is a unique tradition in Medora, where 12-ounce steaks are cooked on pitchforks over an open flame. Guests can enjoy a delicious barbecue buffet after picking up their steak. The dinner offers stunning views of the park and live guitar music for entertainment. The food is served cafeteria-style and fresh off the grill, with outdoor seating available. Staff members are friendly and efficient, providing a great dining experience for visitors.
This dinner was part of an all over amazing day at Medora. It was like the preview to their famous summer evening musical. They cook multiple steaks on a pitchfork and have the food/sides line to go through first. Texas toast, baked potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, fruit, cold veggies. We each got a 10oz steak (plenty). Drinks included were lemonade, water or coffee. They had alcohol for purchase. Dessert was mini donuts or brownies. Plenty of seating with live music that was not overwhelming. And the view!!!! We all sat at the top of the hill with amazing views and the rainy weather cleared in time for dinner. A fabulous time an we were set for the rest of the night.
Wendy H — Google review
The Pitchfork Fondue was a unique and fun dining experience set on a stage with an absolutely stunning view of the surrounding area. The steaks were what we expected since they were essentially fried. We noted that the dining "host" reminded the visitors frequently that the event staff would "make it right" if you didn't like how your steak was cooked. The buffet offered plenty of side dishes and we walked away full. We highly recommend going to the Pitchfork Fondue if you are looking for a fun and unique experience in a great setting. (However, this might not be for you if you are expecting the finest steak grilled to your specific taste.)
Dawn J — Google review
I came in with quite high expectations after paying $50 to get in for the steak meal. Unfortunately, my expectations weren't met. The steak itself was very good, but I found the buffet to be lacking in options. They offer beans, garlic bread, baked potatoes, cole slaw, and a couple of other options as side courses. I found there to be a notable lack of fresh fruits/veggies and dressings - I understand that it is hard to get fresh produce out to such a rural area, but I also paid a whole lot of money to get in. I can't speak about the fondue without speaking about the view, though - you get to eat and see beautiful views of the buttes and the live music is awesome.
Billy T — Google review
Good times! Food was great and entertainment was fun. Would have loved to actually have seen some pitchforked steaks being cooked in the oil! Would definitely do this again!
Casey M — Google review
It is a super fun experience. Food is okay but super cool how they cook the steaks and the views are worth every penny.
Eric C — Google review
Before going I had heard bad things, especially about the steak. That day I asked another diner and he told me it was the best steak he had ever eaten and he really wasn't lying... it was delicious, the dessert was also very delicious, and there was live music too. But I must admit that the dish is expensive.
L C — Google review
Do not miss this dining experience. Buffet so delicious. The steak was so delicious. Top of the mountain meal. Friendly staff. Entertainment included. Dessert and beverage included.
Cindra D — Google review
We enjoyed the steak meal with fixings and also the hot dog meal with fixings. The food overall is about average - but the ambiance and live music made the ticket price worthwhile.

The South Unit Visitor Center is the largest and most popular section of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, covering 48,000 acres with a 36-mile scenic loop road. Situated in the charming town of Medora, the visitor center provides comprehensive information about the area's attractions and activities. Visitors can explore a small museum, watch a film about the park in the movie theater, and even see Theodore Roosevelt's original cabin.
Nice visitor center with all the regular national park swag. This one also has a movie and a small museum as well as a cabin Teddy Rooservelt lived in during the 1920s.

Nice little visitor center, not too busy for a July 4. Had a tour of their interpretive center, like 15-20 mins about Teddy Roosevelt and his time as a rancher. The young intern who gave us the tour was great. Also listened to Ranger Sidney who gave a talk about the Maltese Cross Cabin and she was quite good and very knowledgeable. Watch the 17 min movie about the park and pretty recent and informative (some parks have their interpretative movies a little old some time…) Kids got their junior ranger badge!
Patrick T — Google review
Lots of badlands, saw a few Bison, preferred the north unit more. Part of the scenic loop road is closed, so you can drove 22 miles in and then have to turn around and come back the same way.

Great time in the park after a big rain storm. No Bison or horses just prairie dogs cleaning out their holes
Mary K — Google review
The South Unit Visitor Center at Theodore Roosevelt National Park is the natural first stop for those entering the park from Medora. The visitor center does get busy, so be prepared for a lot of people in a smaller space. Start with the park film shown in the theater, and then make your way through the interpretive exhibits to learn more about the park and Teddy Roosevelt. The Maltese Cross Cabin, one of Teddy's homes from North Dakota, has been relocated behind the visitor center. There is a gift shop and clean restrooms. Make sure you fill your water bottles here before venturing into the park. The Rangers on duty were helpful in recommending longer hikes for us, giving directions to remote trailheads, and answering our questions. The parking lot is a decent size but doesn't have a lot of space for RVs or trailers. Since the visitor center is immediately adjacent to Medora, you could park your rig on one of the side streets in Medora and just walk over.

Park
Theodore Roosevelt National Park, South Unit is closely tied to the history of Medora, North Dakota. The town serves as a gateway to this stunning national park, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the beautiful Badlands scenery. As an outdoor enthusiast's paradise, the park boasts fantastic road biking and hiking trails, camping opportunities, and wildlife encounters with bison, elk, and prairie dogs.
A tribute to Roosevelt and our country's past wisdom to set aside lands for conservation so that generations could enjoy their beauty and revitalizing abilities to our spirits. Consisting of buttes, hoodoos, grasslands, and the Little Missouri River running through it, this park is an enchanting landscape where bison, antelope, wild horses, and other animals make home. In the South Unit of the park, Wind Canyon especially has stunning views, as does Painted Canyon. Cottonwood Campground abuts the Little Missouri River as another place for picture taking. Grateful for this and other National Parks. May we preserve them naturally for all generations hence.

In August 2025, we visited the South Unit Visitor's Center at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. In the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, there is a North Unit and a South Unit, and each Unit has their own Visitor's Center. In the South Unit, there is a 22 mile scenic drive with several scenic spots. We loved the scenery as we drove on this 22 mile scenic drive. The National Park Service intends to complete the scenic drive into a loop circle, and construction is underway. The South Unit Visitor's Center has many clever and colorful displays, including a log cabin outside. Theodore Roosevelt National Park is amazing and memorable.

Make sure to check out the south, north, and Painted Canyon. Beautiful views and trails at all three. The north unit has the cannonballs. Such an amazing sight. We saw bison, wild horses, and prairie dogs. At the south unit we saw a coyote. At the south unit before taking the drive: Take the ranger lead tour of the Maltese Cabin and museum. Also watch the 17 minute film.
Debby B — Google review
Loved it as always. Saw at least 5 different bands of horses and two of them walked right next to the car. It's normal to see a band of two, but I've never seen 5 different bands and never this close. (This was all during one evening drive.) I won't forget the bison. Normally, I see them closer to the road, but I guess they let the horses have the spotlight for once. Still, beautiful and majestic beasts. Prairie dogs are plentiful as always. Each year they get less scared of humans and some are even curious enough to sneak a little closer when they think you might have food. (Please don't feed them.) I've seen tons of animals before, like cyotes, elk, pronghorn, antelope, all types of birds like hawks and magpies, and of course the guys I mentioned above are almost guaranteed. The walking trails are great, many on the drive are great for kids. Lots of overlooks, and picture worthy places. If you're ever out by Dickinson, ND (Medora, Beach, Montana boarder area) stop by for a drive. One vehicle pass lasts one week and an annual pass is worth it if you go more than twice. Highly recommend! (Several restrooms along the way. Look for tiny little buildings. Those are normal bathrooms. Well, porta potties.)
Chrystal ( — Google review
Good park to stop by and drive through. The prairie dog colonies are fun to stop by. We found a few bison at the visor center and one at the prairie colony. Nature Trail Hike outside the Painted Valley Vistor Center was difficult as you have to descend into a canyon. Other hikes where fairly quick.

This place is wonderful. The historic building is beautiful, we were seated right away, and we had attentive service. The food was mouth watering. Today we attended the Teddy Roosevelt Brunch in Medora, just outside the South Unit entrance to the NP. It comes with a breakfast buffet, which included scrambled eggs with cheese, and hash brown casserole with cheese, along with many other choices. So we were fat and happy when the former president took the stage. We live in Orlando, so we are used to "character" interactions at Disney. I saw him before the show and called him Mr. President, and he said, "My friends call me Colonel." Colonel it is! He was a great storyteller, and it was about an hour of him hitting the highlights and heartaches of his public and private life. If you can afford the cost, it's worth it. We had a great time.

We had a great experience here. Definitely a place to eat at while in Medora. The staff did an amazing job which topped of the excellent food. I had their ribeye which as cooked perfectly. My partner had their bison which as so tasty. Luckily the portion was too big for my wife so I got to finish it off. Bread and butter was a great way to start as well.

After a full day exploring Medora, this dinner was the perfect ending to our adventure. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel so welcome. The hostess greeted us with such warmth—it immediately set the tone for the evening. We were seated at a cozy table for two and had the pleasure of being served by an excellent waiter (I believe his name was Simon, originally from Italy). His service was outstanding—attentive, kind, and genuine. He made the whole experience memorable, especially for my daughter, who was treated like a true princess. Watching her enjoy herself so much was priceless. The food was absolutely delicious—every bite exceeded our expectations. The atmosphere, the service, and the flavors all came together perfectly. It was our first visit, and everything felt beyond special. ✨ Highly recommended for anyone visiting Medora. This place doesn’t just serve food—it creates memories.

We ate at Teddys dining room during our recent visit to medora and Theodore Roosevelt national park. This was our first visit to medora. I’d heard great things about this place, however almost didn’t pick it as I don’t eat meat and there really weren’t any options for me, outside of salad. I knew my husband would love it so we went anyway. Once there, I did ask the waiter if I could get the pasta without the elk and he was so accommodating! And it was so delicious! My husband loved his meal as well and we both had a great experience. Our waiter, Enrico was so friendly and also made our experience very enjoyable. Probably the best service I’ve received in the 4 years I’ve lived in North Dakota.

I like a good cut of meat! Was sadden a filet wasn’t an option. Settled for an extremely fat ribeye. It was smothered in this coagulated marinade that was horrible. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Sheriff Bear's Burgers and Ice Cream is a beloved family-owned establishment in Medora, North Dakota. This charming ice cream shop has been a local favorite for years, offering a wide array of homemade ice cream flavors crafted from locally sourced ingredients. The menu also features delectable burgers, including the saucy Maltese burger with juicy patties and flavorful caramelized onions. Guests can enjoy their meals at outdoor picnic tables while soaking up the sun or seeking shade.
Service was extremely fast. The staff was friendly. We really enjoyed the fries with Parmesan. My wife loved the saucy Maltese burger. It was juicy and the caramelized onions were very flavorful. There is only outdoor seating but we enjoyed picnic tables where we could find a mix of sun and shade. There is a public restroom right next door if needed.

Of all the places we dined at in Medora, Sheriff Bear’s Burgers and Ice Cream truly delivered the wow factor. The burger was hands down the best I had during our 2.5-week trip and honestly, it might be the best burger I’ve ever had while traveling anywhere. The fries were also memorable, topped with parmesan cheese and served with a flavorful dipping sauce. I also enjoyed the chocolate, banana, and strawberry milkshake, it was a great treat. My only regret is that we didn’t eat here more than once. I’ll definitely make it a priority to stop by again if I’m ever back in the area. The cashier was incredibly friendly. While I didn’t catch his name, he mentioned he’d be graduating soon. He had such passion for what he does, one of those people you feel lucky to cross paths with.

My family of 7 enjoyed our burgers and fries! Most of us got the Maltese burger for $10 which was very good. I wish fries came with the burger for that price, but a box of fries does feed at least 2. There was parmesan on the fries which some of my kids liked and some didn't. The staff was friendly and attentive. We would eat here again!

Friendly manager, and delicious food! The Maltese Burger is my favorite and their fries, with the home-made dipping sauce they provide, was like nothing I have had before ! We went twice during our stay. Highly recommend this place. Hot, fresh food that tastes great!

After day in the park, this is a great place to come for a tasty Maltese burger, french fries and a milkshake. I was greeted by Jose who’s working here from the Dominican Republic with a beautiful smile and such cheerfulness. Now we get to enjoy an evening of music at the great American folk show and after that going to the Medora musical! This is a great place to stop and have a tasty meal and meet a wonderful young man at the window to take your order

Stopped here on our way through for lunch. We got 2 hot dogs, a kids burger, and fries. BEST fries I’ve ever had and I wish I would’ve grabbed more to go lol. Very friendly staff and reasonably priced. Cute atmosphere as well!

Stop for a bite to eat and had a wonderfully delicious burger and fries. Especially liked the special sauce sent out with the fries. Harry was a friendly face to see at the counter. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

Daaaang delicious! The caramelized onions on my cheeseburger were incredible. I think the manager's name was Harry, super nice guy. I'll be back again this weekend!

Elkhorn Quarters

Hotel
Elkhorn Quarters is a cozy accommodation located in the heart of Medora, serving as a convenient base for exploring the area. The property offers clean and comfortable rooms, some with extra amenities like bunk beds and spacious sitting areas. Guests can enjoy an outdoor pool, although it may not be heated, and there's also a nice grassy area for pets to roam. While the walls might be a bit thin, the overall atmosphere is quiet and pleasant.
I was having such an awful time on a roadtrip due to personal issues and was having a minor breakdown (house flooded while on vacation) so we had to rush back home to Oregon the next morning. On top of that when I checked in, I realized I booked my dates wrong. The front staff were so genuinely kind and professional. They were able to find me a room. Unfortunately, I didn't get to enjoy the full experience since we only had the room to be able to sleep for about 6 hrs before we had to leave back home to Oregon. But it was super quiet. The room was big, clean, and the beds were comfy. Highly recommend! Also thank you to the 2 ladies that helped me when I checked in. Your kindness meant something.

Good location for the Theodore Roosevelt NP, rooms are nice, walls are paper thin, and inconsiderate people ruin things. The guest are so inconsiderate of others it is amazing. SO many self centered people that have total disregard for others. People slamming doors, yelling, banging on walls, letting kids run rampant, smoking around doorways, setting up an office inside the guest coffee area without the use of headphones or ear buds while conducting their HR calls, and more. Staff allowed much of this to go on, so it is on them to train their folks, set rules for ALL to abide by, and enforce them. It is so unfortunate that people can't simply "parent" their own children.

Picture a construction crew on a remote highway project , where do they stay? Although clean and conveniently located, this is the type of housing brought in to accommodate lots of individuals. We booked it online for 4 nights, arrived, looked at the room and thankfully found a room at the Rough Rider. Double the fee, but a real upgrade!

Solid room. My only complaint was the room got a little hot at night even with the ac on 65 degrees. Bed is a little far away from the AC which is the reason for this I believe. I’d stay again though!

I wasn’t overly impressed with this hotel for the cost. Our only option was a full bed and for the cost and size of the room it’s definitely not worth it. The hotel itself has pretty thin walls and we found it to be quite noisy.

The decor was uninspired and the bathroom weirdly spread out, but the room was a good size and clean. The one blanket was kind of thin- I don't know if they had extra since I used a spare I already had in my car. Walls were kind of thin too, but I didn't have any spares jn the car for that. Definitely overpriced, but that might just be Medora.

Just there this weekend. Family of 5 in a family room fit us just fine. Only complaint was what people have all reviewed the same….the blankets are basically a sheet. Bring an extra blanket per bed!

manufactured building with ridiculously tiny rooms . Had to get our money back couldn't sleep in such tight space for $147 and no breakfast. Thin hallways and thin walls. Not appealing at all!
