Laporte in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Laporte, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Laporte is a small, historic community just northwest of Fort Collins, set along the scenic Cache la Poudre River. It serves as a convenient gateway to the Poudre Canyon, popular for rafting, fishing, hiking, and camping in the nearby Roosevelt National Forest. The town’s modest main area reflects its 19th-century roots on the Overland Trail, while surrounding farms and open spaces give it a relaxed, rural feel close to larger city amenities.
With favorites like Mugs Old Town, Big Al's Burgers and Dogs, and Museum of Art Fort Collins, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Mugs Old Town and Big Al's Burgers and Dogs so you can get the best taste of Laporte while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The Fort Collins Museum of Discovery is a vibrant hub that beautifully blends interactive science exhibits with the rich local history of Fort Collins. Visitors can explore a variety of engaging displays in its expansive 16,000 square foot gallery, where everything from music to fossils comes alive through hands-on experiences. A highlight is the Free Zone, allowing guests to enjoy certain areas without an admission fee.
We always love going to the museum! They have tons of interactive areas for kids. My kids specifically love the water activity and train tracks in the toddler area. The nature exhibit they have had recently is amazing! The other highlights are the music area where you can learn or just play on drums, guitars, and so many more instruments.

I took my nieces daughter, who is 6, to the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery. She loved being able to roam around and touch everything. The creepy crawlies, playing the instruments and lifting a piano were a huge hit. It's a smaller museum but great for a family outing with little ones
Trisha R — Google review
Great, hands on museum for kids and adults alike! Not a huge place but we took our time and our son had a blast. The music area in particular was really fun, it was cool to be able to play many different instruments, if your in FOCO or just don't mind the drive, this one should definitely be added to your list.

Enjoyed this facility and space! Clean and friendly atmosphere! Enjoyed the orbital viewing ! The views from the rooftop is also amazing! Items in the gift shop and market are reasonably priced!
Kory D — Google review
My 18 month old had SO much fun here! We could've stayed for hours! There are tons of interactive exhibits, a special zone for toddlers, a rooftop view of Fort Collins, and the most friendly staff ever! HIGHLY recommend to anyone from toddlers to adults!
Lynzy D — Google review
A great little museum and lots of fun for kids. It has been pretty much exactly the same for a long time so it gets a little stagnant. My kids enjoy it but we're from out of town so we don't go on a very regular basis. They've even removed some of the old activities that were enjoyable and some of the current ones seem broken. Still like the place but I wish they would revamp it a little.
Preston B — Google review
This place is simply incredible. My 3 year old had the time of his life exploring the different exhibits. There are so many hands on activities and tons to see and do! The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Especially if your little one likes musical instruments consider bringing them here! They have basically whole band setups, a jam room and tons of other auditory exploration fun. We will definitely be back!
Matt H — Google review
10/10 would recommend. So many different music items. Huge water table, dress up, duplos, drawing, historic stuff, taxidermy animals, a giant toy train track, & so so many things that are impossible to describe, you just have to experience them. So many things to touch; very kid friendly!! Multiple restrooms. A cafe that is decently priced. If you're from out of town, experience it while you're here. If you live here, get a membership. Support this amazing place. If you're a family of 4 by the time you go two or three times, the membership has more than paid for itself!! Love this place! Update: still a great place, now they have animals to look at!!! My kids spent AGES staring at the rats, they adored them.

The 1879 Avery House, located on West Mountain Avenue, is a historic building with a rich past. Constructed by Franklin and Sara Avery in the late 19th century, this classic sandstone house has seen several additions over the years, including the notable Queen Anne Tower. Franklin Avery's influence on Fort Collins' development is evident in his founding of the First National Bank and his contributions to local agriculture through water projects.
Really a beautiful house tour - very well preserved and maintained. I'm not sure I got the tour I preferred - I would have loved to hear more about the history and architecture, but there was a kid in our party and a lot of the tour ended up being geared toward her, which was also fun. So, go multiple times! You may get a different tour depending on your guide. Within easy walking distance of downtown & the historic parts.

A beautiful museum dedicated to the Victorian history of the Fort Collins area! Run by a dedicated staff of volunteer tour guides. Such a fun thing to do with people from out of town or even to just learn more about your own town! Plus where else can you get an hour or more tour for $6??? Families for only $20 flat? Best part, you can ride the trolley right to the front door practically.

My husband and I had our wedding here. It’s such a lovely venue and the staff are amazing to work with. They do very well with communication and make sure that they can do anything to help make your day go right. The price is also right! The inside of the house is lovely and a great place to take some photos for that old time charm! We were also able to open up the house for our guests to tour which gives our wedding a guests a great experience. I highly recommend this venue if you’re looking for a small wedding on a budget. We look foreword to Dong a tour here to learn everything about the home.

People in the group touching stuff and leaning on the wallpaper. Got there before opening. Once in the lady couldn't check people out so we ended up not getting started until after your time. Then, even after that more people came and they let them join the tour. Then more people came and the ladies were so loud asking people where they're from you couldn't hear the tour guide. Halfway through more people join the group. It was not very organized and the group doubled to 10 which was a lot in each room. Also, no bathroom. I don't see how a business can operate without a bathroom.

This is a fantastic place to get a short history lesson on Fort Collins. The house gives tours during the middle of the day that last about 45 minutes. You walk around to all the rooms in the house and get context of how they relate to Fort Collins at the time.

Visitors can explore artworks from local and international artists, with ever-changing displays that make each visit unique. We were just lucky enough to catch the final days of the current exhibit, Triennial. Although this museum is small, they offer works carefully curated works that echo the show’s theme. Here are some favorites. I was glad to see more rooms in the museum being used, plus the gift shop looked great!

If you haven't been then you need to go...its that simple! My office is in the building so I get to enjoy the every changing exhibits. My fav is always the mask exhibit from local artists - currently on display - the photos I posed are from he exhibit - check it out!

Not ideal parking, but the event people are chill. Give me a significant difference to get reassurance from the staff, and I can park in certain spots despite the towing warnings. I was there as a volunteer for an event, so it was very nice to be able to load in without an extra level of on foot transit across a busy part of town. Kindness deserves a shoutout.

Check out the evenings of music that are in collaboration with some of the art exhibits. I offered an evening music and hula for the Aloha Shirt exhibit in July and it was so fun! Interesting to explore the history as well. Get involved locally and enjoy your community!

Very, very small. I dont know if it's worth the $10 admission. The subject matter was interesting, to say the least. As of the writing of this review, I definitely wouldn't recommend it to families or as a date spot due to the dark subject matter.

Stopped by on a whim thanks to a free sponsored entry. They had an extensive and beautiful masks exhibit and fundraiser. Cute museum with a gift shop and interactive area themed after the exhibit.

The bustling College Avenue is lined with historic venues, including the restored Armstrong Hotel and the atmospheric Town Pump bar, which has been open since 1909. Surrounding leafy Old Town Square are shops and restaurants, making it a popular gathering place with water features and sculptures. Brewery
Food & Drink
New Belgium Brewing Company, founded in 1995 by a pair of beer-loving cyclists, offers a wide range of craft beers at its taproom in Fort Collins. The brewery is part of the city's vibrant craft-brewing scene, which includes other notable names like Odell Brewing Company and CooperSmith's Pub & Brewery. Visitors can take guided tours to see the brewing process firsthand and sample some of New Belgium's Belgian-style brews.
Hands down one of our favorite breweries in Asheville! You cannot go wrong with their large beer assortment. If you don’t like beer, try one of the sours or Fruit Smash Hard Seltzer. They almost always have a food truck & they offer Poppy Popcorn(local business) for sale at the counter. You can also bring your own snacks! There are many outdoor areas to choose from, some of which are covered. They are completely family & dog friendly! Just love NB for every reason!
Christine C — Google review
I had the pleasure of visiting New Belgium Brewery in Fort Collins with my daughter, my partner, and her family — and let me just say, this place exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was electric but relaxed. The staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and impressively knowledgeable about the beers, which made the whole tasting experience even more enjoyable. We started off with a couple of flights to get a sense of the variety, and it was hard to pick a favorite — they were that good. But once I did, I stuck with a few pours of my top picks, and every sip was a reminder of how expertly crafted their beer is. There was a Mexican food truck on-site that seriously blew us away. The food was fresh, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the beers. The indoor space was welcoming and full of energy, but it’s the outdoor area that really shines — wide open, dog-friendly, and full of life with kids running around, families laughing, and groups just enjoying the day. It felt like the backyard party you always want to be invited to. This wasn’t just a trip to a brewery — it was an experience. One of those rare places that nails everything: the beer, the food, the vibe, the people, the setting. I’d come back in a heartbeat, and I’ll be telling everyone I know to make the trip. New Belgium, you’ve got something special going on. Keep doing exactly what you’re doing.
Jairo M — Google review
Just a short walk from the middle of Old Town, New Belgium Brewery is worth the trip. Whether you are a fan of Fat Tire or just like to try some new beer varieties, there is something for everyone here. The large, open, outside area is an awesome place to sit and enjoy the wonderful Colorado climate and delicious beers. There was a food truck for snacking and plenty of NB paraphernalia in the gift shop.
Chad H — Google review
Guessing that this is in everyone's list of breweries to visit in town. If not it should be. Fabulous facility with beautiful grounds and a relaxing vibe. All of the usual NB beers on tap and several other must-haves. The sThe staff was very accommodating and happy to engage in conversation and answer many of the same questions they get asked over and over again. Make it a stop. You won't regret it!
Scott S — Google review
Got a case of beer from Costco and there's like 1 that is drinkable. The rest is fine if you like some mystery flavor. Maybe it's raspberry maybe it's dead orphan meat. Ohh this one is a nappy beer with a hint of collection of nail clippings. The worst purchase I've ever made beer wise. And I have made quite a few poor decisions in my day.
Travis — Google review
I went on this beer tour in 2022 and was so impressed that I brought a bachelor party back here in 2025. The space is beautiful, the tour is interesting (though hot for the first section, so be prepared), and for your money you get a lot of delicious beer. If you’re interested in beer or how anything is made, it’s a don’t miss. Make sure to buy tickets well in advance - they sell out fast.
Melodie R — Google review
This brewery has one of the nicer outside spaces; it is very open and vast. I never felt like I was sitting on top of anyone . The beer selection was great and the flights were super smooth. Overall it was a great time and I’ll definitely be back!

We went to this brewery while doing a roadtrip. We did a tour with Cynthia. It was perfect ! We absolutely loved the tour ! Very interesting and fun. I love that you get to see from the beginning to the very end of the process. We stayed after to enjoy a beer. Cynthia was very nice ! The outside area is very nice and the beers are very good ! Definitely would recommend. We even left with suggestions of what to do in Fort Collins ! Would defintely recommend to visit this place and take the tour !

Cafe
Mugs Old Town is a popular coffee lounge located in the heart of Fort Collins' Old Town, nestled between the Chocolate Cafe and the Armstrong Hotel. It's known for its earthy and cozy atmosphere that attracts an eclectic crowd. The menu offers a wide selection of delicious food, including favorites like Marlis Favorite sandwich and chicken and waffles. In addition to coffee, they also serve alcohol. Despite being busy, the service is fairly fast with ample seating available.
Fantastic place for breakfast, delicious coffee, friendly baristas, and the overall ambiance is inviting. This is a great place to hang out with your laptop and handle work emails or meet a friend for a drink.

In downtown Fort Collins which is a very nice old time small town appeal. The coffee is great, great food menu and great service. Not a lot but some good comfortable chairs Will come again
Rodney B — Google review
One of my favorite cafes to study at in town! It’s a cozy atmosphere with a bar as they do serve alcohol. They also have outdoor seating. They offer great snack plates and a few GF bread options (the pumpkin bread is my favorite). My bf has confirmed that the burritos and their lemon poppy bread are delicious. He also loves their drip coffee, I believe they offer $1 refills on that. The employees are always kind and friendly. I kick myself for how long it took me to check it out.

Yum breakfast, delicious fresh baked goods, very friendly service & lovely patio seating. Highly recommend.
Loren G — Google review
Really solid coffee shop! The drinks are consistently good, and the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming—perfect for catching up with a friend or getting some work done. The staff is usually friendly, though service can be a bit slow during busy times. Overall, it’s a great spot and I’ll definitely keep coming back.
Nichollee — Google review
I like everything about this place. In particular, their employees appear to love their jobs, they brew coffee that’s roasted dark enough and the quality is always consistent - not too strong, not too weak. If Mugs could be improved upon in one way, I would add a second register as the line gets so long it’s not worth waiting for a simple cup of coffee. Of course there are other coffee places like Harbinger across the street and I go there if the line at Mugs is too long, but I instantly regret it as Harbinger’s coffee is so bright it tastes like a bag of old pennies. Bottom line, Mugs is my go-to spot and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. 4 stars for service ONLY because they don’t have two registers and some days it prohibits me from getting coffee there.
Carl T — Google review

If you're on the hunt for a delightful dining experience in Fort Collins, look no further than Big Al's Burgers and Dogs. This vibrant eatery is a haven for burger enthusiasts, especially those who adore bacon. Their signature 60/40 burger features an irresistible blend of 60% beef and 40% bacon, making it a must-try at an incredibly affordable price.
Happy hour 2-5. Burgers, Chicago dogs, and shakes and only $5. I hit it so often. Casual grab n’ go.
Chris B — Google review
Ordered food for delivery today. Every single item was ice cold, so cold the chili on the fries and hot dog looked like it was days old because it had become crusted. Then they slapped a piece of sliced cheese on the chili cheese fries. Again, so cold the cheese didn't even melt. I could pull it off in one piece. Who uses sliced cheese for chili cheese fries? The burger was mush like it wasn't cooked all the way (and I like my steak rare so that's saying something). Tried to eat the food because I don't like to waste food but I couldn't. Highly disappointed and doubt I'll give it a second try.
Hotel G — Google review
Pictures looked better than the food in real life. I ordered the chili cheese fries and a Detroit dog and added cheese. The chili looked like it was canned dog food and the cheese looked like a plastic raincoat. Reminded me of government cheese. Fries were over salted and I felt like I wasted money. I’d recommend getting better cheese and also better fries. Mom and pop companies deserve better love so take the time to get better ingredients. People won’t mind paying the price for something that isn’t from a fast food chain.
Silly D — Google review
Don't order the rice krispie treat it tastes like butter, and there are like three marshmallows in it. The chili is super bland, and when ordering the chicago dog, I asked for no onions, and they put that right on top. Definitely won't order from here again, and I won't recommend it to anyone.
Danielle K — Google review
Been coming here since day 1 (well, month 1 haha). It’s a different experience every time. Unfortunately the prices aren’t matching the experience or product. I despise frozen fries anywhere outside of fast-food chains. Why!? It’s so cheap and easy to make real fries. Also thought the menu was a bit confusing for not having too many items.
J S — Google review
Good food but y’all need to clean your soda fountain! Nasty black stuff floating around in my drink. I ordered yesterday too and had the same issue! Gross! And that’s not just the bottom of a dirty cup! I’ve got videos to prove it!
