Telegraph Cove in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Telegraph Cove, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Telegraph Cove is a small historic boardwalk village on northern Vancouver Island, known as a base for viewing marine wildlife in Johnstone Strait. From here, tour operators offer boat trips and kayaking excursions to see orcas, humpback whales, porpoises, and other coastal species in season. The village preserves early 20th-century buildings from its fishing and logging past, some converted into lodges and services for visitors. Nearby attractions include the Whale Interpretive Centre and access to grizzly bear viewing tours on the mainland inlets.
With favorites like Telegraph Cove Art Gallery Ltd, At the Waters Edge Adventures, and Tide Rip Grizzly Tours, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Killer Whale Cafe and Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Telegraph Cove while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Marina
Telegraph Cove Marina & RV Park is a hidden gem located in a small cove off Johnstone Strait, providing access to the Broughton Archipelago marine park and the inside passage marine route. The premium sites offer stunning ocean or cove views with amenities such as full power hook-ups and wifi. It's an ideal location for fishing, with options to charter fishing boats or launch your own at the marina.
2 nights passed and fore ones of the best because for the place were it is 🤩 We had the opportunity to make whale watching with "princes of whales" who gave us the opportunity to see killer whales and much more. We also made a bears watching with "Tide Rip" and they gave us the amazing feeling to see grizzly bears and cubs. 🤩🤩♥️ Definitely Telegraph Cove is a stop taht you must do in a green setting and have opportunities to see wildlife.

Super cute old fishing village turned outdoor tourism mecca. It was significantly busier than I thought it would be yet it did not seemed thronged. We had lingcod and chips and burgers. The food was decent and price was high as to be expected in a place like this. Lots of opportunities to hire kayaks, go fishing, etc

We have come to love this place! Since 1990 we've fished at Telegraph Cove and always came home full of gratitude. If you love the boundless beauty of your surroundings come to Telegraph Cove. The service is excellent from the Meinhold family (Tyler, Stephanie and Josh). Their facilities are great all around. God willing we can come back again next year and for many more years after that. Very highly recommended.

EDIT: Since you feel the need to misrepresent what occurred, I feel the need to explain how it actually happened. Telegraph Cove was very busy that beautiful Sunny Friday. The other parking lot appeared very full so we decided to park in your lot as it was pretty much empty, for reasons we would soon find out. After we parked, my partner and I went to your office and saw that it was cash payment only and despite the sign on your office saying “Open” there was no one there. My partner then suggested we go find an ATM so we could pay which you obviously heard when you watched the cameras back. Very odd that you have time to sit and sift through an hour of camera footage but not the time or money to pay a staff member to be in that office throughout the day to ensure ease of payment. When we walked next door, a staff member at the other park misunderstood what we were asking, and we paid for parking there, unaware that the parking lot you own is not connected to them. We displayed our parking receipts and went to enjoy our time in telegraph cove. After a lovely time, we returned to our vehicles to see you had placed notes on all 3 cars that said please pay for parking with handwritten notes on the back stating you’re lot is not connected to the resort, which we didn’t realize obviously... We were at the car for about 5 seconds when you sped up on your golf cart, parked behind us and started recording us with your phone. You aggressively demanded that we pay for the parking for the past hour. When we told you we thought we had paid, you were rude and instead of saying oh “no there’s been a misunderstanding you need to pay again and then can get a refund from them”, you felt the need to be hostile, sarcastic, and make faces at us. After my friend made a comment about how it is not the most clear that your lot is not associated, you accused us of being “high” as you had heard me make an off handed comment in a personal conversation recorded by your security camera. At your age you should know that you typically get the energy you give. I kept my opinions to myself and paid for our parking because it brings me no joy to be unkind to others or get into unnecessary public altercations with strangers. I hope you are happy about ruining 4 young peoples visit to beautiful telegraph cove over a misunderstanding and $15 whole dollars. We had no intention of “stealing” parking from you and would you have given us the benefit of the doubt, not assumed we were degenerate kids, this interaction could’ve been worlds different. If we planned on stealing parking we probably wouldn’t have gone and paid for parking… A simple misunderstanding and that is what we got. I definitely don’t believe that the customer is always right but you certainly weren’t right in this situation either. It would look much better for your business to just apologize for a bad moment or bad day or whatever you have going on because I would hope this is not the way you normally conduct yourself. Even if we did have a master plan to stealing your precious parking you acted disgustingly. Don’t waste your time responding, nothing you say except an apology will make this look better for you. Original: Staff are very aggressive. If you need any more proof read the reviews and the business’ replies. Pre-thank you for the passive aggressive reply that I’m sure Is coming my way. I’m truly sorry for how miserable you must feel to act that way.

Full-time RVers for many years and this park deserves an A+ rating! The couple who own it are extremely friendly and compassionate. They care not only about the quality of their park but also the entire village. Not going to mention the views; the history of the village and marina; etc. When you visit, you'll see.

We stayed one night at the marina and really liked our stay. The lady who booked us was very friendly as were all of the people working at the General Store and restaurant. Very scenic area to walk around and great boardwalk that is being rebuilt after their fire. It’s great to see the place coming along so quickly!
Elizabeth K — Google review
A very clean and well-run operation. Not much to look at as it's just a parking area in a field but it has full services and is a short walk to Telegraph Cove. We didn't need to use the washrooms or showers. We were greeted by Stephanie shortly after we arrived and she answered our questions.

I used the marina for a week. Great location and facilities. Tyler was very helpful at the launch and some local site seeing intel.

Nestled in a picturesque inlet at the northern tip of Johnstone Strait, Telegraph Cove serves as a popular launch point for wilderness excursions. From May to October, visitors can embark on modern vessels to observe resident and migratory orcas, humpback whales, dolphins, and sea lions. Additionally, boat tours venture to Knight Inlet and the Great Bear Rainforest for grizzly bear safaris.
Our little family went on a day trip just to see the Whale Interpretive Centre! Huge shoutout to the girls working there today…It was refreshing how excited they were to share about their knowledge of whales and other things to my kiddos. Really appreciate the extra effort to educate my kids (and myself…!). Thank you 💗 we will be back.

Great place! Lots to learn about our local whale life and marine life. Spectacular skeletons' of lost whales! Just go and check this out!

My new favourite place on Vancouver Island. I was enthralled by the articulated skeletons, historical objects, and other specimens. A beautiful building in a stunning location, to boot. Admission was extremely reasonable. A must see if you're visiting the North Island. The best way to protect the whales and other marine life is to learn more about them!

So sad to see this place burn down in spring this year. There is a small tent with some information and gifts, and next to it you can see the remains of the charred bones that must have been amazing to see in its full glory. The renovation of the pier is well underway, hope to see it reopen soon.

wonderful museum featuring massive articulated whale skeletons suspended from the rafters of the repurposed historical building! beautiful! very informative exhibits, not only about whales but the other wildlife commonly spotted here and the whaling industry in Telegraph Cove and surrounding areas. Reasonable entry cost of ~$6-7 per adult, and under ~$5 for children!

Had a blast chatting with staff and learning about local whale communities. They have so many interesting skeletons and real specimens on display. A fantastic stop on your trip north island.

We loved the whale skeleton running nearly the length of the entire building. There were all kinds of displays, where if you weren't careful you might learn something :-). The whole "Historical Telegraph Cove" it is situated in is also very interesting to explore, with lots of shops and restaurants. Had a great sunset kayaking tour with Ashton who was very knowledgable and generous with his time. Ashton made sure we saw as much wildlife as possible including seals and Fred the sea otter. He was very competent and we all felt safe whilst he led the tour. The quality of the kayaks and paddles was of a high standard with paddle jackets and skirts included. Thank you very much to Ashton, we had great fun!

We did an overnight kayaking trip with North Island kayak. The conditions were quite windy- too windy for us to kayak to our campsite. So they boated us to a different site. We were able to kayak in a protected bay at the alternative site and watch humpback whales from the beach! It was like National Geographic! The humpbacks were so close to the beach at times. I had only seen whales from a distance before this trip, so that was quite a treat. The food was amazing. Our guide was absolutely awesome. Overall- great trip, great company!

Just back from a 2-day, 1-night kayak trip that exceeded every expectation. The trip was led by two exceptional guides, Becky (head guide) and Jane (co-guide), and their teamwork made all the difference. Becky’s professionalism, calm leadership, and expert navigation set the tone from launch. She kept control of the group, ensured safety with every paddle, and communicated clearly throughout. It was evident she’s a true mentor—patient, insightful, and always looking to elevate her co-guide Jane. Watching Jane grow under Becky’s guidance was inspiring and added a real warmth to the experience. The scenery was absolutely stunning— dramatic coastline, hidden coves, and moments of pure tranquility that felt like something out of a postcard. The food was a highlight as well: fresh, flavorful, generously portioned, and accounted for individual preferences, perfectly fueling our days on the water-Thanks Matt! Sleeping arrangements were comfortable and well-thought-out, with sturdy tents and clean, quiet spaces. Overall, the trip impressed on every front—scenery, food, sleep quality, and, most of all, the professionalism and skill of Becky, and the mentorship she provides Jane. Highly, highly recommend this adventure to anyone looking for an unforgettable kayak excursion with top-notch guides. Thank you North Island Kayak!

I did the 4 day tour with my wife Katie, 30 June - 03 July 2025. We booked the trip months in advance and North Island Kayak were excellent at getting and keeping in touch with us from time of booking to our arrival. They gave us advice on kit to bring right from the outset. Communication was great! The trip itself was awesome. A truly great experience of a Kayaking expedition in a wild and beautiful environment. This was made even better by our guide, Bree. Bree was at the top of her game, helpful and friendly, very knowledgeable on the area and everything in it, and above all ensuring her gusts were safe and comfortable at all times. Bree and her associate Matt, prepared some excellent food for the trip which Bree worked hard to prepare for us. Three great meals a day and there was always plenty. We encountered and saw Humpback Whales (Humpers), Sea Lions, Seals, Black Bears, Mink, lots of Sea birds and endless Bald Eagles and Turkey Vultures. Considering the animals are wild and do not appear to order, we were lucky to see what we did. Whales were the key reason for doing this trip but had we seen none, it would have still been a five Star trip! Thank to Bree for being an excellent guide, lovely person and five star kayak instructor. We had a truly wonderful time, worth every penny.

Our three day kayaking adventure in the Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound has to have been one of the most incredible experiences in my life. Thank you to North Island Kayak for connecting us with our amazing guide Brad. He was the host with the most, such a great human, an incredible chef, full of humor, wisdom and stories, and took such good care of us ensuring we were all able to make the most of each moment...it was all a dream come true! Cozy camps, quality equipment, delicious food, but more importantly Biggs and resident orcas, humpbacks, porpoises, eagles, curious seals, a quirky sea lion, a handsome local sea otter, and leaping sockeye galore. It was so sooo magical, I cannot wait until next summer to do it all over again!

Truly a life changing, unforgettable experience with a fantastic crew of (fun!) experts. The location is breathtaking and you really get to experience the bears in an ethical, safe way. We saw two mothers with their babies and will never forget it as long as we live!! I am extremely prone to extreme seasickness and I didn’t feel even the tiniest bit unwell during the entire 8 hours on the water. Highly highly recommend!
Lynn B — Google review
After having seen some grizzlies in Yellowstone and Glacier from considerable distance, and orcas only from larger ships, we have wanted to see orcas and grizzlies for years. We scheduled Tide Rip as our best opportunity to see grizzlies anywhere. We got together early (6:30am), and were taken all the way up Knight Inlet to Glendale Cove by Laura and Mattias. The boat ride on the way up was picturesque, and had us seeing a black bear with two cubs, another black bear up close on the shore eating barnacles, a grizzly bear swimming across a channel, a sea otter, and some Dall's Porpoises. Once we got up to Glendale Cove, we transferred onto a flat-bottomed boat and ventured up into a couple of marsh channels. We were able to get within a couple of hundred feet of two different adult female grizzlies, each of them had two cubs. We were able to watch them for an hour and then return to the dock to eat lunch. Afterwards we returned to the marsh to continue watching the bears, who were spending the afternoon grazing in the grass. It was clear that the goal of Laura and Mattias was to maximize our wildlife viewing. We turned back after a couple of hours in the Cove and saw white-sided dolphins, sea lions, eagles, humpback whales, and just across the Johnstone strait from Telegraph Cove, four transient orcas. They helped us follow the orcas for several minutes, navigating around some of the Plumper Islands in order to be able to follow them at a safe distance. It was everything we wanted to see in a day, and rivaled any of our days that we've spent on African safari over the years. The boats were comfortable, the information shared by Mattias was informative, and the lunch was fresh and really quite good for a packed picnic lunch. We returned by about 4pm. While we were in the area for five days and took a multi-day kayaking trip and a whale watching trip, if there was one single activity that I would recommend out of Telegraph Cove it is this tour.
Ian T — Google review
This is easily the best tour I've ever taken. The staff was amazing! They gave a warm welcome and funny explanations! Thank you, Ishbel and Matthias! ❤️ We started the day with a 30-minute breakfast. Then, we took a boat and waited no more than an hour to see our first black bear on the beach. Before 11 a.m., we saw so many animals that we couldn't count them (except Matthias, LOL). I also appreciated how respectful you were of the animals' space and how you waited at each spot so everyone could take great shots. Around noon, we stopped at a dock in the middle of the strait to eat and switch boats for an hour (what a surprise for us)! The lunch was very good, too. There were healthy chicken wraps, chips, and soda or water. Then, we went to Glendale Cove and saw a mother grizzly bear with her two cubs eating grass nearby. I had the best day of my life! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to spend the day spotting animals.

We've been looking forward to this trip for a long time. It was worth every penny! Mattias and Nick did an amazing job making this day a true experience, and they definitely succeeded. We saw 2 grizzly bears 🐻🐾 and 2 black bears, along with other amazing wildlife 😍

We had a great experience with Tide Rip. The two guides on our boat, “Grizzly Girl,” were fantastic and shared many interesting facts about grizzly behavior and habitat. They were always on the lookout for wildlife and made the trip really enjoyable. On the way there, we saw a black bear and later a grizzly mother with two cubs at Glendale Cove. On the way back, we were lucky enough to see orcas, humpback whales, dolphins and even a sea otter. The observation was handled very responsibly, with plenty of distance kept from the animals and only a few boats in the area at the same time. Overall, it was an amazing experience, and we would definitely recommend Tide Rip to anyone visiting the area.
Jonathan G — Google review
Our day with Tide Rip Tours started at 6:30 in the morning. We were greeted by an enthusiastic crew who were well organized and ready to serve. The light breakfast was just that, light, but there was an effort to provide a measure of sustenance. Our boat crew consisted of a Skipper named Ishabel (sp), and guide Yuri, were exceptional! The Skipper handled her boat with skill and care for her passengers, while Yuri entertained and informed us about everything related to west coast bears. The trip up Knight Inlet was spectacular although we didn’t see a lot of wildlife on the trip up. One elusive grizzly that was on shore retreated into the forest before we could stop to see it. Arriving at Glendale Cove three grizzlies, a mother and her two recently born cubs, could be spotted on shore tossing boulders like they were marbles as they foraged for food. Lunch was provided in the form of a build your own wrap. It was filling, well planned and tasty. Ample water and pop was provided. After lunch we took off on our skiff once more to look for more bears. We were delighted to find the same momma playing with her cubs along the shore- eventually ending in a bear bath. Moving farther up the river we discovered a second mother and her two cubs, one of which loved to raise up on its hind legs to catch a better glimpse of us. Heading home - an almost 2 hour journey - we were treated to grey whales as they engaged in a feeding frenzy. All in all, it was an incredible day and experience!
Ron A — Google review
We had a great trip seeing 9 grizzly bears, 1 black bear and a whole lot of whales, porpoises and some playful dolphins. Delicious lunch and great guides. Without a doubt it was the best day of the entire holiday.
Sander A — Google review
What an absolutely amazing experience! Our skipper and guide (two young women:)) were both incredible – knowledgeable, passionate, and always happy to share fascinating information about the wildlife and the area. They gave us plenty of time for every single sighting, which made the trip feel calm and deeply immersive. The tour lasted from early morning until late evening, and thanks to some truly spectacular encounters – including black bears, a grizzly mom with her cubs, and even orcas – we stayed out longer than planned. Breakfast and lunch were delicious, and I really appreciated that they even catered to special dietary preferences (vegan, in my case). An unforgettable day in nature – highly recommended!

Prince of Whales - Whale & Marine Wildlife Adventures in Telegraph Cove offers the chance to witness three types of orcas: resident, transient, and offshore orcas. Each type has its own unique behaviors and hunting habits. The area is a hotspot for whale watching, especially during the summer when Northern Resident orcas return to the region. Visitors have high chances of spotting these majestic creatures.

The tour itself is great. Even though it was raining and cold we got to see 3 humpback whales and other wildlife as well... no killer whales... as it was not the season to see them easily. I did have an issue booking somewhat... booked for 9am and they changed the tour to 10am without an explanation. That they did that is one thing, but that they started sending mail after mail about this and again another mail to sign the waiver again... It didn't end there about the waiver. When checking in before the trip a young woman that apparently is learning the job was pretty arrogantly stating that I hadn't signed the waiver online, which I did. She found it when looking. Such a waiver would also never fly in Europe. It's like signing a death sentence. But OK... every tour you book in Canada (and probably the States) has a waiver like this. Professional company. Good tour. Relatively bad service.

My wife and I went on two whale-watching tours with Prince of Whales from Telegraph Cove on September 7th. In the morning on the larger cruise boat and in the afternoon on a Zodiac. Both tours were excellent, and we saw quite a bit. The afternoon tour, however, was absolutely fantastic. We were able to observe a large number of very active humpback whales feeding, we saw many dolphins up close, porpoises, a large group of Northern Resident Orcas, otters, seals, and some seabirds. We were able to take some great photos, and the staff were very friendly. This was one of the best tours of our three weeks on Vancouver Island. An absolutely fantastic experience and highly recommended. It was a pleasure.

Worth every penny. While it helped that we had great weather and super calm waters that day, we were lucky to see Humpbacks, Orcas, Dolphins and Sea Lions on our 3 hour large boat tour. Our kids had a great time, the boat was with ample space (we were only at 60% capacity), the guides were very knowledgeable and had their own pro quality camera and shared a set of (watermarked) photos from our adventure at no extra cost.

Creative and beautiful pieces of art. Top that off with great customer service and fabulous ideas of places to go around the area to wear out a 4 year old.

At the Waters Edge Adventures

Canoe & kayak tour agency
At the Waters Edge Adventures offers an exceptional 3-day kayak tour in Johnstone Strait. The experience is led by knowledgeable and thoughtful guides who provide insights into the surrounding environment, including ocean currents, forests, wildlife, and the impact of industry and climate change on the area. The high-quality gear and comfortable accommodations enhance the overall experience. Additionally, the trip includes well-planned activities and delicious meals enjoyed amidst stunning scenery.
My husband and I did the 3 day Johnstone Straight Adventure Aug 2024. It was amazing. There is nothing negative I could say about the trip. AWE Adventures is a fantastic company to deal with, our guide Michelle was awesome, the food was top notch and they 100% accommodated our vegan dietary request. Let’s not forget how spectacular the scenery was and humpbacks were. If this sort of adventure is on your bucket list, I suggest you tick that box and AWE Adventures won’t let you down.

I recently joined the 4-day Basecamp tour with At The Water’s Edge Adventures and I couldn’t have been happier. The camp is located in the most stunning spot—right on the edge of the Johnstone Strait and close to the Michael Biggs Ecological Reserve. It’s the perfect place to see orcas, and we were lucky enough to spot them up close one day—an absolutely magical moment I’ll never forget. The camp itself was beautiful, clean, and cozy. We went out on kayak tours every day, and although I had no prior kayaking experience, I felt completely safe and comfortable thanks to the excellent equipment and the guidance of our amazing tour guides, Hannah and Kevin. They were both incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and supportive, making the entire experience even more special. The food was absolutely delicious, and as a vegan, I was especially grateful that they fully accommodated my dietary needs with thoughtful, tasty meals. Everything was so well organized, and the attention to detail was fantastic. I would give this experience more stars if I could! Truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that I’ll cherish forever. Thanks a lot guys! Wish you all the best!

Our family of four (kids 12 and 14yo) did a 3 day kayak expedition with At The Water’s Edge this week. We hoped for an extraordinary adventure for us and the children and we weren’t disappointed. We were attracted by the consistently good reviews, which covered all aspects of the trip and we found them to be accurate. Everything was top notch - kit, boats, company management, guide, broader support staff and facilities and local knowledge. We put 1/3rd of our total 3 week vacation budget to this tour and have no regrets. We are a sporty family and were able to push ourselves paddling 45km over the 3 days including two Johnson Strait crossings in thick fog. On day 1 we crossed the strait together “like the keys on a piano” with our guide Kai in the middle of our two double kayaks. It was a technical crossing but we always felt safe. On the far side we were rewarded with a bull orca dorsal fin gliding out of the mist about 30 metres from our boats. It was a serene and awe-inspiring experience, not scary at all as I’d thought it might be. The bull was followed by the family group and we gently paddled in the direction they were going to watch them play. We listened to their calls on Kai’s hydrophone. Sea Lions worked hard to get our attention. We wild camped, enjoying further spectacles of nature accompanied by delicious, healthy food for breakfast lunch and dinner prepared fresh by Kai. We learned a lot of new skills in wilderness camping, BC nature and kayaking and left the trip more independent. We were expected to pack and care for our boats, deal with our own kit and tents and help plan the route. The kids were trusted to do their own bit and encouraged to be themselves. Our guide was raised in these waters, educated in biology and ecology and could share his philosophy of the outdoor world, and the way he brings that to his life. This was the experience we envisaged to bring our family together in a shared adventure. Thank you!

We just enjoyed an incredible 7-day trip to the Broughtons. This place is magic--we were blown away by the beauty of the region and non-stop wildlife encounters. AWE exceeded our expectations and worked hard to make the trip as memorable as possible. Rob helped us book the right trip option for our group and went out of his way to provide delicious, fresh food while accommodating challenging food allergies. The kayaks and gear provided by AWE were high quality and made for good paddling and comfortable camp life. I can't speak highly enough of our guide, Kevin. He worked sunrise to sunset to make sure we got the most out of our 7-day trip. His navigational, kayaking, and natural history experience were inspiring and he made sure we got to experience the best campsites and wildlife hotspots in the area. To top things off, he closely tracked whale movements using marine radio. Thanks to his knowledge, we were able to see orcas pass within a few meters of our kayaks on the last day of the trip (while making sure we were following protocols and looking out for the safety of the animals and us). Thank you, AWE!

Cannot recommend At the Waters Edge enough! We did a 5 day/4 night trip in the Broughtons in late June 2021 that was the trip of a lifetime. Wesley was a pleasure to organize with in advance, and obviously cares about the experience his guests will be having. He answered all our questions promptly and thoroughly, and was flexible and accommodating. On trip, our guides were Alicia and Rob who are truly exceptional humans! We learned so much from them, they were both extremely knowledgeable about the local area, history, and wildlife. Plus they’re great fun, and the meals were absolutely delicious!! We always felt like we were in excellent hands, and were able to relax and enjoy our surroundings. The nomadic style of choosing routes and camping spots according to tides, weather, and the group made for a very special trip. Support a local company and book with AWE! You won’t regret it. Wesley and his team are building something special over in Bauza Cove.

We booked very last minute for the blackfish sound (boat assisted all day kayak tour). Wes was very responsive and the guide, Mark, was really friendly and knowledgeable. We were lucky to see orcas, humpback whales, porpoise, sea lions, deer and eagles! At the waters edge were fantastic, passionate about what they do and really well organised.

We did a 3-day kayak tour with At the Waters Edge in August 2022 and highly recommend AWE! As we started to plan our trip, Wes, AWE’s owner, was responsive and clear with us via email and made sure we had all the info we needed to pack and prepare in advance of our trip. Our guides on our trip, Johno and Carl, were awesome.hey carefully planned each day’s activities and clearly communicated each night what was in store for the next day’s adventure. They enriched this fun and adventurous kayak experience with some key lessons about the wildlife, marine biology, conservation issues, and history of the First Nations in the area. The meals and snacks our guides cooked for us were absolutely delicious - seriously the best food we have ever had while camping. The gear provided for us (tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mattresses, raised cots for the tents, and chairs) were all top of the line gear. We stayed warm, dry, and slept so comfortably. Over our 3-day trip, we saw orca several times, humpback whales, porpoise, and seals. It was truly like a sea-fari. One one of our orca encounters, a pod of 15-20 orcas passed right by our kayak group. Johno and Carl kept us calm and safe, directing us to group our kayaks together and hang tight as we watched these beautiful creatures pass us. It was truly an incredible experience seeing these majestic animals so close. We originally chose AWE because their kayak trip dates were more flexible and worked better for our vacation schedule. We are SO glad we chose AWE over other kayak guide companies. During our trip, we passed by other kayak guide tour groups, and I can say that our group to staff/guide ratio seemed much better than what I saw from the other groups (our food also looked way better - no joke!). And our guides were so personable and knowledgeable, and well-respected. We would pass by other groups and it was fun to see the different guides interact with each other - it was clear that our guides, Wes, and AWE were well known and very respected by the other guides. AWE made this a trip of a lifetime for us. If you are thinking about booking a kayak trip on the northside of Vancouver Island, do not hesitate booking a trip with AWE. They are amazing.

At the Waters Edge: Where do I begin?? HOW do I even begin to say how wonderful this experience was? I guess I'll start at the beginning: I wanted to surprise my partner and my 9 year old son with an ocean kayaking trip, and all the reviews led me to AWE Adventures. From the beginning communication was clear, concise, and courteous. Wesley was friendly and quick to respond to all my inquiries, and I had many! The lists and documents and suggestions provided were extremely helpful and I took them all very seriously, much to my partner's dismay, and I stayed warm and (mostly) dry. Let me tell you about our guides Marc, Ricci, and Dennine: Our guides were so patient and encouraging with our 9 year old son. They graciously listened to his stories, readily answered his many questions (and they were MANY), and matched his enthusiasm at his request to help with various tasks. They kept him busy just as much as he kept them on their toes. They were wonderful. Marc, the man with a 5 star plan. On departure day Marc explained his plan and outlined his expectations for the trip. Marc had a plan for every day taking into account the tides, currents, and weather. He was extremely knowledgeable and kept us safe and on schedule in accordance with the ocean currents and tides. He was enthusiastic, and patient, and he makes a damn good cup of coffee. Ricci, the girl with 5 star knowledge on inter-tidal marine life, and a heart the size of a Giant Pacific Chiton! To say Ricci is passionate about inter-tidal marine life would be an understatement. Ricci was eager to show us all the things she knew about inter-tidal life. She was quick to answer my son's MANY questions, and if she didn't have an answer, she had a book and we would look it up together. Ricci radiates positivity and always had a smile on her face. Dennine, the girl with the spontaneous adventure streak, 5 star neck massages, and all the local plant based remedies and knowledge. Dennine was our local indigenous guide and it was such a blessing to have her there with us. Her knowledge, experience, and passion for the land and the ocean was invaluable. Dennine has a generous and peaceful soul and offered us much balance on our journey. OMG, and the FOOD!!!! The food. All I can say is WOW. I wish I would have taken pictures of the food! Quite honestly it looked and smelled so good, and I was so hungry that I could not be bothered to take pictures. I am amazed at the quality of the meals we were served while on an island in the middle of nowhere. They were incredible. The meals provided also catered to dietary restrictions. We were beyond impressed. And of course we saw all the wildlife. whales, porpoise, sea lions, otters, you name it. Our guides were all so knowledgeable and knew where to look and what to listen for to make sure we all got a chance to see the animals in this incredible place. I could go on, but I've probably lost many of you by now... We will book again as soon as we can make it happen. 10/10 recommend AWE Adventures. TLDR: Great guides. Great food. 5 stars. Book here.

It was one of the highlights of my vacation at Telegraph Cove. I went all out on my last supper here, and it did not disappoint. Well worth the price. The cook is in a league of his own when it comes to the daily specials, and the waitress (hannah) that served me was exceptional. Do yourself a favour and eat here. The seafood Phō, fish and chips, and the 8oz sirloin steak with bacon wrapped scallops with fries, veggies, and bread were amazing.

Waiter was a bit too enthousiast to say that everything in the restaurant is free from soy and peanuts… after checking with the kitchen the burger bun, the french fries, the mayonaise were not ok…. Friendly enough to make a burger with lettuce and gave the advice to buy a bag of chips in the general store for our disappointed son. Waiter was friendly but often was too fast. In a restaurant you want to take it easy and feel comfy. Just take the plates when everybody has finished please. Quality of food was ok but not more than that. Bit regrettable that food was not fresh fresh or that there are no real fresh fish dishes on the menu. This while you are floating on the harbour… Muscles, Clams, Shrimps, Crab, Salmon, … so many possibilities…. Only fish with pasta…

This restaurant is an amazing place in Telegraph Cove. The waitress, Elena, was friendly, highly professional, and very attentive, and she provided very good information on the menu. I had a wonderful time; the restaurant was well-designed, and the food was very fresh and very tasty, I enjoyed it. I realized that I arrived late, around 5 pm, and the resort office was closed for a room, she proposed to take care of it, and she managed to have a room for me. Elena, you are the best. I had a room in the Resort. You can see the review on the resort. I highly recommend this restaurant, and I will tell my friends to eat at this restaurant. Thank you so much to Elena and the chef.

Food was tasty, salmon was fresh. They sadly have no understanding or education about allergies. Allergy health risk. The server sounded confident. We explained cross contamination really quickly and emphasized celiac disease. Server advised to take the salmon with rice. Turns out he never informed the kitchen about the allergy, just gave the order! The rice looked like it had stock in it. My husband went and asked, the chef in white with long hair confirmed it was absolutely not okay for someone with celiac disease, looked shocked and immediately took the plate back. He gave me rice noodles instead, but on the same plate with the SAME salmon and veggies. I guess he didn't understand cross contamination. Husband went back again and the main chef in black outfit got agitated with us. Chef in white stayed friendly. Still it went wrong even though they remade my food. That night I was very sick. Gluten poisoning. It was the only thing I ate outside of my own food that day. Little heads up, this is the only restaurant in town, far away from a hospital. I suggest bringing your own food if you have allergies.

The food is priced as "fine dinning". I paid $40 for Ling cod and prawns. The meal came out 2 minutes after ordering and had obviously been on a steam table. The cod was tasteless and wet. The prawns were well over cooked. The veggies were limp and under seasoned. My wife had some kind of Asian bowl with prawns and rice. Again the prawns were well over cooked and the rice gluggy and gross for $35. Lovely place for a beer but avoid the food.

The location is convenient and some of the views from inside are great. The food is just above average with very limited vegetarian options. The Pad Kee Mao was decent and my friends enjoyed the seafood pasta and salmon fillet. Considering the limited options around this area, this restaurant is an okay option with a slightly steep price tag.
Divya R — Google review
Obviously a cornered market but we went twice so it must be doing something right. Menu was good for seafood as you'd expect but vegan main courses were limited (the only vegan main was an option on a salad) and nothing was marked gluten free. They could do items like that (the gf desert was amazing) but the menu could do with marking better and offering more vegan options.
Christopher F — Google review
I came here with my husband and little one. First off they understand what celiac is and took it seriously, secondly my little one was very hungry and they got her chicken strips out very fast. As for the gluten free options they have burgers and 2 kinds of salads, I was informed that the halibut burger or salmon burger was the safest option and I ordered the halibut one with tossed house salad. It was amazing! If your thinking about visiting here and are celiac, don't worry this restaurant has you covered.
