Shopping
City Mall Alajuela in Costa Rica is the ultimate destination for a day of shopping and entertainment. As the largest mall in Central America, it offers an unparalleled experience with its diverse range of stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. The sprawling indoor mall features a cinema, diverse dining options, and occasional events like concerts or sports activities. With ample parking and convenient location near the airport, it's perfect for last-minute errands before flying.
Amazing Mall, 4 levels, everything you need. In the USA Radio Shack and Payless went out of business. I was a frequent customer at both stores. Payless is the right name , you always paid less. I got these 2 pairs cost converted to $32 USA $. The yellows I wore to Costa Rica from the USA, they are my POLO not my PayLess. I love Forever 21. If you ask me my age that is what I am forever 21💯‼️🤣

Great mall. Great food. My wife and I stayed at the Hilton nearby so we could catch an early flight out. This mall was an unexpected treat. Great end to an awesome trip. 🇨🇷

Big! Clean! Safe! All spaces occupied....

Visiting from Ohio USA. Pleasantly surprised. This is a large Mall with many different shops and food choices. Clean ,safe, friendly, but not cheap. Be prepared to spend some money
Donovan E — Google review
Another big mall with lots of stores and also small stations selling toys, plants, candies, pastry, jewelry and more. Very clean and stores are well organized and attractively showcased. However…, in the ladies restroom there were some small roaches coming from behind the mirror and walking around the wash basin. I love gardening and in Sol Naciente, I found seeds. They have a decent variety of seeds at affordable prices. I bought 4 packets, and at the counter I received one for free. The variety pf gardening products like pots and tools is good. They also have (educational) toys, school supplies, thick socks and more. All at affordable prices but not at the low end. With regard to food, we are vegans and it is a bit difficult to find a balanced meal in the mall, so we ended up buying a medium veggie pizza without the cheese at Domino’s. for 9,900 colones (+/- $20), which tasted nice. Overall pleasant experience at this mall.
EZB Z — Google review
Very big mall similiar to what you would find in North America with every store imaginable. There is an extensive food court on the upper level as well as sit down dining options. We were looking for an ATM and found a whole slew of banks on the top floor. If you are looking to exchange currency you can do so here at BAC Credomatic ( lines can be fairly lengthy at times though). Overall a nice way to spend a few hours if you are in the area.
Philip B — Google review
This is a cool mall recommended if you have a late flight you can hang out here and eat at food court.
Attila O — Google review
Big mall. Lots of stores and souvenir shops. 3-4 floors in this mall. A lot to look at and explore the second time around.

Juan Santamaría International Airport

International airport
Airport
Juan Santamaría International Airport, located about 5 minutes south of the center of Alajuela and 30 minutes west of San Jose, is a popular entry point for travelers visiting Costa Rica. The airport offers efficient immigration processes and courteous officers who speak English. Visitors can explore nearby attractions such as Poas Volcano National Park, La Paz Waterfall Gardens, and the Juan Santamaria Museum. The airport provides clean facilities and a sense of safety for travelers.
San Jose is a really good airport. It’s small enough to get around easily but has lots of good restaurants and gift shops. The car rental area is inside right before you leave. If you’re renting a car, my advice is do not do an advance you’ll get a better rate if you do it when you land because all of the car rental companies are within a few meters of each other so you can walk around and negotiate. I reserved a car in advance the very first time I got here, but never again.
Steve T — Google review
The airport is relatively small and quite expensive. For example, a coffee costs $5, a hamburger is $24, pizza is $18, and even a simple magnet is priced at $10–11. I recommend making any purchases outside the airport to save money. If you need to rent a trolley for your luggage, it will cost you $5. However, one benefit of staying inside the airport is the air conditioning, which provides a much more pleasant environment, especially in hot and humid weather.
Serdar A — Google review
Other than the loud speaker reminding travelers of Laws and regulations every two minutes constantly, this is the friendliest, cleanest, easiest, but hardest to sleep at airport I have ever been on stand by at in my life. It could use some more 24 hour food services in the main terminal and maybe even convert a small area to be a hostile so long waiting passengers can lay down their belongings in a secured area and lay down in a quiet part of the building and get some shut eye for a few hours or days ! just a suggestion but all airports should offer a Free place to get out if the way in a quiet place so one can get some rest area for airline customers only. please think about it no cots would need to be bought just a piece of floor with maybe lockers for personal carry on luggage.
Shannon S — Google review
Juan Santamaria International Airport is the primary international gateway serving San José, Costa Rica, and is located in the nearby city of Alajuela. It functions as a central hub for several airlines, providing connections to numerous domestic and international destinations, particularly within North and South America, as well as the Caribbean. The immigration and customs processes were notably lengthy, especially during peak hours. Compared to previous years, the check-in procedures have significantly improved, and security lines now progress more efficiently. The airport also features a variety of retail shops and dining establishments within the terminal. However, the prices at these establishments are considerably higher than outside the airport, making it advisable to purchase souvenirs and snacks elsewhere before your trip.
Patrick M — Google review
Landing was easy and welcoming. Not many in customs so it took about 30 minutes to make it outside without checked bag or carry on, in October. Leaving is even bigger and with ATMs , a few shops, kid area, charging area, plenty of screens and seats. Licor tastings as well as water sources so being your empty bottle! They even had water for pets. Definitely not a bad experience.
Cya V — Google review
Very small international airport. Wide variety of local products but they are all overpriced. I don’t know how they sell like this. Unaesthetic… Very limited food restaurants. Pack your meals before get here :) Easy check out process
Gene K — Google review
Small but nice airport, friendly staff with the "Pura vida" slogan present but pricy, first the question of what we bring in out bags and carry on as souvenirs, specially coffe as you cannot pass I think more than 250gms of it, "it's not allowed for safety reasons......." big BS as you can buy any size coffe packages once inside. 250, 500 or a kilo at a very high price, a magnet, sticker $5 to $9, food also expensive...a typical breakfast anywhere in CR $15, there $30.
Walter K — Google review
Amazingly nice airport Staff is so friendly and helpful Very clean airport, water refill stations everywhere Lots of restaurants, food, and coffee options Unfortunately lounge closes at 8 pm which is not good, I had a 11:59 pm flight and I couldn’t access the lounge as I reached by 8:30 pm There is ATM , pharmacy, and amazing vibrant souvenir shopping

Nice variety of shops and restaurants. Stopped in at the Mexican restaurant and it was great. The sushi restaurant is good too. If you go to the lower level there is a great little place that sells gelato.

The Taj Majal Indian restaurant is SO good!!! I've eaten at a lot of Indian places & this is one of the better ones. The atmosphere is gorgeous & cozy, service was fabulous, & the food divine! Our favorite is the aloo gobi but the paneer tikka masala is a close 2nd!

Nice place to take a stroll with your doggo. Kids running around and playing in the park. Church bells ring in the distance, parrots screech in the trees (in a good way) and Ticos are genuinely nice people. Awesome place to sit walk or even run.

The park also features murals and serves as a hub for local cultural activities, including dance rehearsals. Visitors can explore nearby museums and enjoy dining at the surrounding restaurants.
What a beautiful park located in the heart of La Fortuna, there is so much seating on benches and in the grass, gorgeous flowers that give the air a floral aroma. Absolutely stunning!!

I love this part. It’s actually right across the street from the cathedral, which is gorgeous. And the museum is right next-door also. Definitely you will want do when you’re in Costa Rica.

Cool little town park we went to before eating dinner. Small and not room to play around but the statues were pretty neat and we liked the murals as well. If you are here then stop by for some photos and head on for dinner.

Small park, with some canons and a statue of Juan Santamaria. We had a local tico show us around and gave us the history of Juan. The park could be a very nice place except for the large amount of trash left on the ground.

Good service and nice pizzas. We shared a large pizza with 2.

Bar Imperial at Juan Santamaria Airport is a delightful spot that elevates the airport dining experience. Guests rave about the warm and attentive service provided by staff like Naomy, who goes above and beyond to ensure a memorable visit. The menu features tasty options such as beef nachos, which are highly recommended, especially when paired with an ice-cold Imperial beer. Ezequiel, the bartender, crafts delicious drinks while engaging patrons in friendly conversation that makes you want to linger longer.
Great service and pretty good airport bar food. We had beef nachos and wings. Did not disappoint.

Not a stop for a quick bite while flying out of the terminal. Service was quick and food was good. Just with the fries were crispier. The mozzarella was the dominant part of the sandwich for sure.
Andrew C — Google review
Ordered $7usd fries only for it to be nearly empty basket with less than 20 fries total AND COLD. I had to let them know it was cold stale fries for them to give me another one, which was still barely even warm. Gave up at that point, didn’t want to waste more time waiting for actual fresh fries, paid and just wanted to leave. Wouldn’t return and DO NOT recommend to order food here.
August S — Google review
Slow service, low quality, and overpriced. Quesadilla without the queso👎 half of the tortilla was missing cheese. After informing the waiter he did not offer any assistance. I do not recommend.
Camilla K — Google review
On August 15 we landed in the San Jose airport because we had a layover. Had food here and was served by Evelyn. At the time, I was happy with the service. Now, 11 days later, I have a suspicious $300.00 Chinese food order on my credit card dated from Aug 15!!! The restaurant is soda sabor del wok in an area about an hour outside of the airport. I never left the airport!!! I’m so disgusted that my credit card information was stolen at this restaurant. It was the only place we used our credit card before we left to our final destination.

The Spaghetti Factory is situated on the outskirts of the shopping center. It boasts an extensive menu, offering a wide variety of dishes ranging from pizza to salads, as well as smoothies and desserts. The food not only tastes delicious but also exhibits exceptional presentation. This establishment in Costa Rica has gained a reputation for serving top-notch soap and pasta dishes that are considered among the best in town.
This is a really good place for classic pasta dishes, expertly prepared, and with many options. I noticed they use Italian flour since the kitchen is open and transparent, same ingredients I use at home. Good wine deals and bar has separate seating in front - I found their G&T to be prepared just the way I like it, large glass with lots of lime. Service was friendly and efficient - spot on. Located within super modern and vibrant City Mall.
John W — Google review
Ordered pizzas and imperial beer. Pizzas ok. I ordered margherita pizza 8000 corona added some mushrooms and olives they added 5000 corona to pizza cost which I felt was outrageous. Fortunately they forgot to add the second imperial x 2 to bill 4800 corona so ended up ok but how can 2 extra topping sprinkles cost more than 2 beers crazy!! Wouldn’t go back
Pete A — Google review
Fresh lemon/mint drink was delicious. Pizza was more or less, not my favorite. Big mixed salad was good. Regular coffee was too strong. Service staff were friendly. Atmosphere ok. Prices are too high for CR !!!
Jenny R — Google review
The food is expensive but good. I felt tricked when we got the receipt it costs 3,300 colones per bottle of water. The bottles of water aren't big, just regular soda bottle sized. I wish my waiter would've told me the water costs 3,300 colones before we drank 3 bottles. I've never spent 9,900 Colones on water before. Besides the expensive water the food and service are good
Gabriel T — Google review
This is inside City Mall with high traffic and tourist because it is close to the airport. The food was good but the micro-aggression from the server was STROOONG. We are used to dine with natural tap water, and we think bottled water is overrated because CR has clean and natural resources from the tap. So we asked for tap water. When the server approached with a bottled water, I told him we wanted tap water in Spanish. After looked at me, his Spanish has gone bad all of a sudden and said literally "yo poner agua, yo no cobrar agua". My husband is local, I am not but I am fluent in 3 languages. People on the phone would think I am a native Spanish speaker but somehow some others would look at me and stopped understanding me all together. I would have been ok if he spoke to me in English assuming I am a tourist just coming from the airport, but in the "simplified Spanish" with chinese stereotypical accent was plain micro-aggression and veeeeery disrespectful. Loved the food, hated the service. I guess I put it on myself when I decided to try a new place before checking Maps. They are only 3.8 for a reason.
Esther T — Google review
A great meal, with a great atmosphere. The service is fast and the food is really good. We had the carpaccio and lasagna with some cosmopolitans.

The scenery was average, neither exceptional nor poor. The cuisine was straightforward and delicious, featuring uncomplicated yet delightful flavors. Before the main course, they served a variety of breads with different spreads, among which the garlic spread stood out as a favorite. Although I didn't capture a photo of it, the garlic shrimp pasta dish was flavorful; however, I couldn't fully comprehend the accompanying liquid sauce which seemed like an afterthought - a light oil that simply pooled at the bottom.
The beef tenderloin was fantastic and also they serve a lot of other delicious menus like salads, empanadas etc... The meat dishes come with a great choice of sides. Good malbec served by the glass and even nice cappuccino! Super friendly staff and nice atmosphere, great choice overall!
Sabine L — Google review
I ordered a small fillet, which actually was not small at all, I just find it so strange to have a single piece of meat on a plate and nothing else. To me it looks unappetizing. The meat and its preparation were absolutely delicious. I had the Caprese salad as the accompaniment, which was OK but nothing to write home about and a martini. The bill came to $58 which for Costa Rica wasn’t bad.
Lisa Z — Google review
Had dinner at El Novillo while staying nearby in San Jose. Service was pretty slow but the four servers we saw were handling all the tables and various ones stopped by our table through our meal. They made a mistake on one of our drinks and were kind enough to replace it and did not charge us for the mistake, which was appreciated. The food was decent - they bring a bread and dip combo as a starter, which was nice, the waygu burger and fries were good, the fries came out hot and crispy, the Caesar salad with salmon didn’t have any dressing and the salmon was very salty and dry, but the lettuce was fresh and they quickly brought a side of dressing.
Katrina K — Google review
The restaurant was nice and so was the service but the food was very mediocre, especially at such HIGH prices! Caesar salad was dry, no parmesan cheese to speak of. No seasoning on the salmon. Baked potato overcooked and cold with a hard teaspoon of butter. NY Strip was average. No thanks
Becky M — Google review
The views were noting spectacular, nore was it poor. The food was simple, good eats , with simple good flavors. They bring out small peices, three different types of bread 🍞 with three different types of spread, prior to the meal. I very much enjoyed the garlic spread. I ordered a garlice shrimp 🍤 pasta dish ( I forgot the picture, sorry ) it was tasty but the liquid sauce that came with it I dis not understand, it felt like a after thought of a light OIL that they poured over it that just sat in the bottom of the boil, the shrimp were tinder but had not real flavor to them, no char broiled, something. We had a good time and agin the food was not bad at all, just different.
Mr. R — Google review
Lovely attentive servers, delicious food, comfortable atmosphere. Best service we’ve had since we’ve been in the country!
Gayli H — Google review
The restaurant is right in front of the Marriott Courtyard. Service was good but most of our dishes were cold when they were served. Dishes are mostly meat focused. The tuma tartar was very delicious. The mushroom sauce with my chicken was so so.
Emile C — Google review
Empanadas were undercooked and of course the center was cold , chorizo was very average and does not justifies the over 4K colones price ! steak was good ! Service need more improvement, when you have to be constantly looking to cross eye with your waiter to order water or anything is not a pleasant experience , the place is very nice ! Waiters need to check more on people !

Mercado de Alajuela is a bustling local market filled with small-scale traders, local businesses, and vegetable vendors offering fresh meats, cheese, spices, fruits, clothing, souvenirs, and more. It's not just a tourist trap but a genuine one-stop shopping extravaganza where you can find everything from groceries to prepared meals. The market also features numerous soda restaurants serving traditional Costa Rican food and natural smoothies.
I loved the soda and the spice shop we went to!

Good for a quick shop but not so much variety. I think it's more of a place for meat and vegetable market. Felt like a quick tour of Indian vegetable or fruit market 🙃.

It was fun to walk through the aisles and be the only tourists there. You can buy or look at fruit, meats, cheese, and all kinds of other items. There are several medicinal plants and spices vendors. Several sodas are there too, but they stop serving food early ( 5:00 was too late). A couple of booths sell souvenirs

Park
State park
Central Park Alajuela, also known as Mangos Park, is located in the historic center of Alajuela, Costa Rica. The park is surrounded by a mix of old wooden homes and newer storefronts, offering a glimpse into the city's past and present. Visitors can stroll through the park to admire its beautiful landscaping and a fountain imported from Glasgow, Scotland. The area around the park also features various restaurants serving typical Costa Rican cuisine as well as fusion dishes with international influences.
The place is always crowded, here people find shade and calm in the heat, hide from the sun and relax. Tall trees help to cool down, create shade. There are many public benches, there is a central place that families with children like to visit. Clean, beautiful, cozy.Near Museum.

If you have a flight to catch or a long waiting time this is area is a good place to go. It’s close to the airport maybe around 10 minutes by car or taxi and they have a lot to offer. They have museums, restaurants, markets, church and etc. Worth a quick visit before the flight.

Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto, also known as The Cathedral of soccer in Costa Rica, is a beautiful stadium with easy access to and from the city of Alajuela. It offers immaculate facilities, comfortable seating, and a family-friendly atmosphere for enjoying games. For fans of Alajuelense, it's considered the best place on Earth. The stadium provides an intimate setting with bleachers close to the field, making it perfect for experiencing thrilling matches.
I like this football stadium as the bleachers are more closer to the field. I watched to support our Philippine National Women's Football Team 🇵🇭 competes against the National Team of Costa Rica 🇨🇷.

The sun stands are built to be used as stands in between, but they are used all in a row, which makes it very uncomfortable to enjoy a game or activity. It is the worst stadium in Costa Rica. Under the stands there are various food sales. I do not recommend it

Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center is a 14-hectare sanctuary in Costa Rica that stands out as a favorite excursion for many visitors. Unlike a zoo, the center focuses on rehabilitating animals and releasing them back into the wild. The friendly staff's dedication to caring for the diverse range of animals is evident, and all proceeds support this important work.
I love this place, I come here when I can when visiting Costa Rica, they do such an incredible job of taking care of the animals. This trip I was able to see a new addition of an interior animal house - it had turtles and such, it was nice to see the space evolving, this was my third visit. Highly recommend. This time we stopped in the restaurant - it was ok, nice coffee and cake but prices are a little high, to be expected in a tourist spot like this one.
Katherine — Google review
It's Central America's largest wildlife centre. We went on a tour given by Eduardo who was a lot of fun (and knowledgeable!). Without the tour we wouldn't have heard all the fascinating although sad stories as to how many animals have ended up at the center. We bought some postcards with beautiful photos, which it turns out were taken by Eduardo. We also had lunch there and found the food to be excellent. Go if you get the chance, you won't regret it.

The highlight of my kids trip. We hit this on the last day and were so happy to find security watching the cars until close since we had to travel with luggage before spending our night in SJ, but wanted to do something chill for the kids. This place is incredible, so much wildlife and feels like a rescue center not a zoo. Even though the animal sightings are amazing and several species are out in the open or wandering the park. We don’t use a guide but a guide pointed out a sloth moving across a rope for the kids. It was super rainy and stormy so my ponchos finally got put to good use and barely anyone was out, felt like we had the place to ourselves. Much of the animals were hiding from the rain and you could see them. Then they all came out after the rain and looking for dinner. We got to only spend maybe 3 hours here but we stayed until the last minute and ran around to circle the park close to twice. It was big! Would definitely recommend to families, couples, solo travelers. Such a treat. Tons of photo ops with all the animal statues too. We felt like we were in the jungle. Some covered areas in the snake center and some other spots was nice when lightning got strong.

There are no words — this was an absolutely incredible experience, and it was well worth spending the extra day in the San José area just to visit. We did the guided tour with our very large group, and Eduardo was amazing — funny, engaging, and clearly passionate about the animals, the park, and the educational mission of the rescue center. We had several young children with us, and it was magical for them to see ocelots, mountain lions, birds, snakes, and so many other animals up close. This is a must-visit destination when you’re in Costa Rica.
Mandie H — Google review
If you have a few hours to explore in the San Jose area, I highly recommend spending your time at Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center. This is not a zoo, but a rehabilitation center for injured animals. There is however an area for young children to interact with various domestic animals. My wife and I arrived at opening time. 9:00am and left at 2:00. We are both senior citizens, so that may account for some of the time, there are lots of benches to sit for a while and observe the animals. Most of the paved paths have some degree of incline (after all this is Costa Rica) We did not take the guided tour, felt like we probably could not keep up with the pace, but I’m sure from other reviews that we read that it’s worth spending the money to do so. Another reason we were there until 2:00 was the on-site restaurant Kivu, although they serve breakfast, we wanted to explore first and then have lunch. Huge menu of appetizers, main course, and some desserts. Cost for entry, lunch, and souvenirs, were all reasonable, when you consider that the profit from all of these income sources, is part of what allows Rescate to do what they do. PS food and service both were very good. All employees that we interacted with, were polite and courteous.

Great experience. Lots of animals to see and they are all rescues so you feel very good about encouraging them. Highly recommend if you are spending a day near San Jose.

Restaurant
Cevichitos is a delightful culinary gem that has captured the hearts of food lovers, especially those who adore ceviches, breaded fish, and pasta dishes. Nestled in Alajuela downtown, this charming restaurant boasts a lovely seating area adorned with a hanging garden that creates an inviting atmosphere. Diners can indulge in refreshing fruit juices like mora and pineapple while savoring traditional Costa Rican fare such as casado and empanadas—all made from fresh ingredients.
ER MER GERSH! This place was so good and so crazy fast!! We ordered and had our food in less than 10 minutes. Definitely some of the best ceviche I have had, and big portion sizes. Our waitress was so kind. We hardly speak Spanish but we were able to get everything we needed. The inside is so beautiful and such a hidden gem on the side of a street. So glad we popped in!

I stumbled across this restaurant from Wanderlog's 50 best restaurants in Alajuela - it was #3 on the list, and overall it was not good. Firstly, I am really confused by whether it is it's own establishment from the neighbouring restaurant 'La Hedija Sabrosa,' because Google said it was open, but when we arrived, the door to Cevichitos was closed, but when seated in La Hedija Sabrosa, we got menus for both restaurants. The ceviche was a great portion and decent, but unfortunately everything else ordered was either subpar or just terrible. My friend's chicken was raw on the inside, so had to be sent back. I ordered Tamales (decent, nothing special), empinadas (tasteless and hard, and arrived after my dessert, oddly enough), and the Flan de coco (overly sweet and artificial tasting). One employee was really friendly and dealt with the chicken concerns politely and quickly. Otherwise, the staff seemed to be trying to steer clear of us, the only customers in the restaurant at that time, my best guess being because I don't speak fluent Spanish. It was a really disappointing experience for our last night in Costa Rica, after a week of great food, especially for a restaurant with rave reviews across the internet.

Delicious last meal in Costa Rica! My parents and I were exploring Alajuela downtown for our last day. We decided to walk around the corner and eat at this cute restaurant. The seating area has a lovely hanging garden. We got their delicious fruit juices (mora and pineapple), a casado, and the empanadas -- everything was super fresh. They even provided some extra so my dad could sample some of my and my mom's juice. The owner Henry was super nice and struck up a conversation with my dad, and even ended up providing us a complementary chorreadas! (He said it was his grandma's recipe). One of my favorite meals of the entire trip. Thank you Henry for such a wonderful experience!

Max Pollos is a small yet inviting and pristine establishment that offers accessibility for individuals with disabilities throughout their premises. It's an ideal place to visit with your family or friends, boasting convenient accessibility and reasonable prices. The only drawback is the absence of parking facilities. Nonetheless, they serve delicious and affordable food with efficient and friendly service. Their menu features a variety of options, including tasty fried chicken at an excellent value. Alternatively, customers can opt for grilled chicken or chicken served with rice.
(Translated by Google) The first time I visited, I was served fairly quickly, and there was immediate availability, so I didn't have to wait to eat there. The chicken is quite good quality, cooked perfectly, and I liked that they sold canned juices from the valley. There are plenty of tables. Parking is on the road, so you should check for availability and avoid parking on the yellow line to avoid a fine. They also have indoor screens for those who want to entertain themselves while they eat. Las Delicias del Maíz is a culinary gem that offers an authentic taste of Costa Rican cuisine. Diners rave about the diverse menu, which features fresh and flavorful dishes that cater to various dietary preferences, including vegetarian options. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with Jose Manuel Ramos Madriz providing excellent hospitality despite language barriers. Guests can indulge in delightful beverages, like their refreshing pineapple mint drink, alongside hearty meals such as Casado sets and rich beef rib soup served on corn cakes.
A great place both loved by Ticos and visitors like me with very authentic tico ambience and wonderful decor. One can see the open kitchen at the entrance where all the food is cooked and served from. And this place is huge!

We've been coming to this restaurant for 20 years and have always been satisfied. However, after a long time a new visit, we were very disappointed... I've never seen or eaten such a bad casado. The meat was boiled, not fried (chicharrones). I left over half of it! Nothing was good. We paid and walked out, and we won't be coming back! There must be a new owner...

Amazing place for local food. I also really enjoyed the ambience, with nice pictures on the walls and a green view to the back. Service is helpful and friendly, however partially a bit slow. Otherwise I really enjoyed my dish and will definitely return when I’m in San José next time. Pura Vida :)

As a Tica living outside Costa Rica, this is the restaurant I always want to visit as soon as I am back! I was served bad food, must have been from the day before. I did not finish my plate "casado with chicharrones", and got diarrhea 15 minutes after the food for 2 days. So be careful going there. I was sick but very bad. And the food did not taste good at all. But the cost was elevated, 6500 colones for casado with no taste and gratis diarrhea. thanks but no thanks.

What a great and magic place. Highly recommend cause you can feel in every deep breath peace, calm and relaxing. Great for share with friends or family because has open areas where you can play with them, picnic tables which is great because you can bring your own food or snacks. There's a good and safe parking lot by the way.. no restaurant but right across the street is a grocery store if don't minded. Alcohol drinks are not allowed ! Come visit! You can do hiking all through the forest and rent a pretty house facing to the beautiful lake !

A wonderful place to hang out with your family and friends My friends invited me and my parents to visit this Recreational Park a couple of days ago. It was not within our itinerary but we gave it a shot. My parents did not have to pay the fee since they are golden citizens, anyhow the fee is less than $2. The area is surrounded by nature, there are cabins in the middle of the forest, and several small "ranchos" where people can bring their own food and grill as well. There is a small lake right in the middle of the Park . If you pay attention, you will see several small turtles resting on top of branches by the lake. Fishing is allowed which is a plus. Right now they are building new and more modern areas near by the parking lot. They also have playgrounds for kids. If you want to escape from the everyday stress, don't think twice, this is the perfect place to go.

Doka Estate Costa Rica Coffee Tour & Plantation is a company that has been established for several decades and situated on volcanic slopes, providing tours of its facilities and coffee tastings. Visitors can enjoy an informative tour of the family-owned coffee estate and purchase coffee gifts from their gift shop. The company also offers a day trip to Poas Volcano National Park and La Paz waterfall gardens, which are two popular natural attractions in Costa Rica.
We stopped in to take the tour. We needed to wait for the next tour, but the cafe had lunch available. The food was very good. We explored the grounds for the time we had left before the tour and my kids loved checking out the plants and looking for bugs. The tour was really good. It started with a sample of iced coffee, vanilla and cream which was excellent. Then the tour began. Our guide did a great job. She explained all about how coffee trees are raised and then how they harvest and process the beans. It was a really interesting tour. Seeing the 100 year old machine that they had used and the new one they replaced it with was really cool. Then we visited the gift shop where there were tons of samples which were very good. Highly recommend.
Sam P — Google review
I did the basic tour and is great. Francisco, our guide, explain us everything with patience and clarity. The gift shop was a little overpriced but the whole experience is worthy. The people from Costa Rica is super nice. The tour was not expensive at all and covers all the pieces from planting the seeds to the roast, and of course the tasting.
José L — Google review
This is a wonderful tour. Very informative and interesting. The grounds are impeccably kept and easy to walk around. The coffee is very good. Opportunity to taste each one. Gives a whole new prospective on the cup of coffee I drink everyday.
Colleen B — Google review
A friend recommended that we stop by this plantation and we are so glad we had time for the tour. We started and finished with samples of tasty coffee and chocolates. The tour included a balance of farming practices and coffee processing; starting with seedlings, moving through adult plants, and finishing with the processing of coffee beans. The grounds are beautiful and the butterfly garden is a bonus. This is about a 30 minute drive from the SJO area and it is well worth the trip (even if you were not going to do the tour and opted for coffee tasting in the shop).
Cami J — Google review
Chose this due to it being a local independent grower, rather than it's huge international neighbour named after a Moby Dick character! Only booked day before and was a smooth booking process. Interesting drive to get to it with lots of winding roads and swirling fog. Once we got there, I really enjoyed this tour. Really informative and lovely place. Guide was knowledgeable and despite it being a wet day, everything was good. Told us about the history of the place, the processes and the distribution, everything from planting out to selling the finished coffee. He even told us about the other indigenous plants and the wildlife (and the not so wild plantation cat, aka pest control! ) All the signs were in English and Spanish. End of the tour has coffee and chocolates to taste before you buy. No pressure sales, but the coffee wasn't priced up, which was the only negative. Lots of signs for offers (buy X get x free but no idea of the cost). Would definitely recommend.
Amanda G — Google review
Went here on a whim and it was a fantastic choice. The price was amazing for a guided tour that was almost two hours long. Our guide took us through all of the coffee growing and processing steps and answered all of our questions with ease. The gift shop was great with coffee and chocolate samples available to try before and after the tour. There was a nice restaurant that we didn't try but it looked like it would have been good. I liked the washrooms here too, nice and clean!

We had a great experience on the Doka coffee tour, even with just the two of us—it felt like a private tour in the best way. Our guide, Jonathan, was fantastic: knowledgeable, engaging, and even sprinkled in some German, which made it feel extra personal. Despite the rain, the tour was still a highlight of our trip. We loved getting to taste the coffee, and the hands-on elements—like holding actual beans and seeing the equipment up close—really brought the process to life. Lunch was a nice bonus and rounded out the visit perfectly. Highly recommend if you’re a coffee lover or just curious about how much work goes into your morning cup!

Much love to all involved. My 2nd visit. First was 13 years ago. A lot of costa rica has changed due to Americans and Europeans, but DOKA Estate is still great. Friendly guides and perfect coffee

The restaurant is known for its delicious food. It can get crowded especially on weekends, so be sure to arrive early. The menu features a variety of typical Costa Rican food, such as gallitos chubascos (a type of beef dish). The atmosphere is charming and the staff are very friendly.
They are the best. Love it there so peaceful. Food was great. Service is very good. Family owned and they do a great job.
Mark L — Google review
An awesomely authentic Costa Rican restaurant. We tried just about everything on the menu and even though we were full we had to keep trying more. The staff was so friendly and took great care of our late group with ease. The gallitos say they serve 3 people but man we sure served more than that with them and they were absolutely incredible. Only oddity was that my beer came with ice in it.

The Location and the Ambience is excellent, We went for the breakfast. The food was delicious and crossed our expectation. The staff was very friendly, the place is clean and has a small garden where you can relax. It is bit expensive but totally worth. I will recommend to have food at this restaurants while going towards Poas Volcano.
Azar J — Google review
I visited this place twice in one week. The first time, I received terrible service, but I thought it might just be due to the server. However, I returned today and experienced the same, if not worse, service. To make matters worse, the employees were having a meeting right in front of the guests and ignoring everyone. What is going on?
Manuel R — Google review
Delicious food, fair pricing and nice location. I rarely had such a soft piece of beef on my plate. Tastewise, everything was amazing and fresh. Preparation wise, it could’ve been better, but the taste really made up for it. As in the area they have fresh strawberries, definitely get yourself some juice or smoothie as they’re really delicious. The location is spacious and cozy at the same time. Staff was nice and helpful.
Jannis T — Google review
The food is ACTUAL LITERAL HEAVEN! The place is super cute and idyllic, and the server is incredibly sweet. Every single item from the dishes to the beverages (the strawberry milkshake OMG!!!!!!) is absolutely fresh, tasty and amazingly flavorful and just done so right in every single possible way. These people absolutely know what they are doing. Best best best. EAT HERE!!! Even if you have to drive for an hour. You will be so so so happy afterwards.

The food is Amazing. The tortilla alineada is a must. The casados are really big and delicious. The service is really good. The view is nice, there's a big garden. It's really crowded in the weekends but on weekdays there's almost nobody. Recommended.

Excellent well priced food with a lovely garden to take pictures of local flora and kids to run around. They even have hammocks set up; however, check the knots so you don't fall down. Definitely recommend it.

Nestled in a charming neighborhood, Pizzería La Zompopa is a delightful family-run establishment that emerged during the pandemic in 2020. This cozy spot specializes in traditional wood-fired pizzas made with fresh, local ingredients, ensuring each bite bursts with flavor. The inviting atmosphere and friendly staff create a welcoming environment for all visitors. Guests rave about the crispy crusts and generous toppings, often leading to second orders!
Great pizza and staff. I’m a solo traveler who speaks minimal Spanish and this place made me feel safe and welcomed. I was. Very surprised with the flavors. Think crust and light on the sauce which makes the pizza better. Fresh ingredients. If you’re in the area well worth the stop.

Delicious pizza. Friendly and nice staff. Owners are awesome. Ate here twice during our vacation. Best pizza ever. The desert pizza is also very delicious with nutella. Highly recommended

Great pizza, tasty salad. Cleant nice interior. No alcohol.

This pizzeria is definitely out of the way, but if you happen to find yourself staying in the area it’s an option for decent food and good service. They seemed to have solid business throughout the day and the restaurant is much cleaner and well set up than the smaller shops around. I had a calzone and some garlic bread. The prices were extremely fair.

Excellent pizza!! I would go out of my way to get this pizza, happened to be right next to our hotel and was an amazing option.

My husband and I tried LaZompopa’s pizza for lunch and it was probably one of the best pizzas we have ever had. The crust was crispy and full of flavor and the ingredients were fresh and local. We liked it so much that we ordered a second one!! The staff is friendly and the place is brand new and very inviting. The side garden was lovely to eat our lunch in. We give it 5 enthusiastic stars!!

Bodies of Water
Multiple volcanic peaks & craters in a national park, plus a famous light-blue river.
Loved the blue water and the waterfall. It was interesting to see the sulfur spring bubbling up in the water further down the trail. The trail has intense parts, steep and rugged, steep stairs and further down the trail steep and uneven stairs. But it is worth the effort if you are in moderately good physical shape. Bring plenty of drinking water and eat a hearty meal before you leave. It is my understanding that they don’t allow food on the trail. We spent about 4 hours on this trail observing birds and enjoying the beautiful blue water.
Stephanie E — Google review
This place was pretty cool. They offer tours that will take you to the waterfall to take pictures. My wife and I saw plenty of people doing this, but we just went by ourselves. The trail is very well maintained and clear. Although, the elevation is extremely intense both ways. Wear proper footwear as it is steep, wet, and slippery. We saw the tourists in slides and bathing suits...it didn't seem like swimming was something you could do there. Also, we saw a few people slipping and falling onto their butts due to wearing improper footwear. It took a little under 2 hours for us to complete the full trail using trekking poles and moving quickly. The blue river is really neat, but the views from altitude were the coolest parts for us. We saw a family of Capuchin Monkeys. If you drive your car here (totally recommend) there is a parking lot for $6 next to the park entrance. The entrance fee was about $12 per person and you have to pay online. You can't bring any food into the park. Overall, this was worth it, and a great workout. Don't bring grandma.
Evan R — Google review
This is a wonderful place if you enjoy outdoor hiking. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes because you will walk a lot ! I saw two snakes on the way but they seemed cool.
Sui C — Google review
First and foremost if your coming buy your tickets in advance. Make an account and buy the tickets, they will not see you at the window without tickets and service sucks once you get there. The walk was awesome not recommended to do it if your hungover but that did help me sweat everything out. The walk is easy but if any elderly that can’t walk or is difficult to walk don’t do it. It’s flat then hilly and full of rocks. The water fall is amazing but the only downside of it is that you can’t walk all the way down to the bottom it’s closed off due to fallen trees. So you can only see it from where we took the photo. Is it worth the money maybe, but you should look elsewhere to get to a waterfall up close. You drive over the water and that’s free you can’t miss it. If we would of known that we couldn’t get to the bottom we would of gone to another one.
Elfego J — Google review
Amazing experience just make sure to book your tickets ahead of time. There is no service in these mountains and the wifi is extremely slow at the location. No ticket counter to get around these issues. But the hike is truly beautiful.
David C — Google review
3km out and back hike. Challenging at times, but difficult parts are either paved or have man made stairs. The access to the waterfall was closed and definitely makes the effort of the hike less enjoyable but the pool and mixing area are worth it for those who enjoy the beauty and science of the natural world. Plenty of wildlife too including toucans, capuchins and coati.
Larry M — Google review
Beautiful waterfall after a short hike. Trails are well maintained with interesting wildlife to be seen. Stairs were involved and it's a rainforest so we had some rain. Get there early. Nearby parking for a small fee.
Bill C — Google review
We went when it rained- not ideal when you go to see the blue water. We booked online for a time- they didn't seem to pay attention to the time you booked for because we arrived rather early and they let us right in. We also opted for doing the hike without a guide. I'd say if it is raining, to skip this stop. The water will be brown instead of pretty and blue. The trail is extremely muddy and the long path out to the water was pretty uneventful- the waterfall was the main attraction.

The Museo Histórico Cultural Juan Santamaría is a historical museum located in Alajuela, Costa Rica. It is housed in a former barracks and prison building that dates back to the late 19th century. The museum is named after Juan Santamaria, a national hero known for his heroic actions in 1856. Visitors can explore exhibits on Costa Rica's military and cultural history, as well as learn about the life and legacy of Juan Santamaria.
Very nice museum with some amazing paintings (lots of great portraits) and some artifacts that capture the rich and colorful history of Costa Rica. The rooms are comfortably air conditioned, while keeping their old-world architecture and charm. I love the polished stairs and tile floors. And the restrooms are very clean and in good working order. There is a small bookshop where you can purchase books (in Spanish) for both adults and children. Be sure to check out the quiet little garden in the back. Also, it was free when I went in March, 2024.
Pete S — Google review
Free entrance, you are not allowed to take photos inside the museum, I tagged along a tour group & went up to the rooftops . Open 9-5 I didn’t know about William Walker some 19th Century. US private citizen a self proclaimed ‘ President ‘ of some Central American territories… anyway he fell out with some US backers ..but still invaded Costa Rica , ….Costa Rica & several other coalitions defeated him in a battle Mr Walker surrendered at went home He returned to invade again…was captured by the Royal Navy ( British) they handed him over to Honduras , was court marshalled & that was the end of him Look him up … I’ve probably got some facts wrong 😉 Anyway that’s what the guide said , he also said most of the the rifle & cannons were English Worth a visit

A wonderful museum of history and art. Met some wonderful artists doing stitch art pictorials, they were fabulous. The cultural art on the second floor was stunning. The building as a former prison was very nice to visit but I wouldn’t want to be sent there as punishment.

Had some time to kill before our flight. Went to Alajuela and found the museum. The people who work there were really nice. We learned about the history of Costa Rica and saw some great art. All for free and with friendly people. The town of Alajuela is pretty cool too. We were the only Americans anywhere. We got some lunch at a Soda in the market and hung out in the park. Weather was perfect. It was interesting and everyone was very nice.
D Z — Google review
The museum opens at 9 am. Two floors of interesting exhibits tell about the history, traditions and life of Costa Rica. Many exhibits about the time of the struggle for independence. An interesting hall that shows this in drawings. Separately there are weapons and clothes of warriors. Models of the most important historical battles. On the second floor there are exhibitions of contemporary artists, a gallery of students. You can also go up to the roof and look at the city from above. I recommend it to get to know the country better. Admission is free
Helen P — Google review
The people working there were very kind and obviously care a lot about the history. We practically had a private tour of the place due to a recent holiday. It's also free entry
Mike A — Google review
I really enjoyed this museum! I am a history buff so I really enjoyed all the illustrations and histories of Central American states. I will say, if you don't know Costa Rican history, it may not fascinate you as much so read up before you come! The rooftop was amazing! Great views and you can take a photo with the flag! 🇨🇷

Mexican restaurant
Jalapeños Central, located in downtown Alajuela on 1st street, has been serving up delicious Tex-Mex cuisine since its opening in August 2003. The cozy restaurant is known for its special attention to customers and a menu that comes highly recommended by visitors. From chimichangas and enchiladas to cakes, soup, fajitas, burritos, and more, the restaurant offers a wide variety of mouthwatering dishes.
We needed an easy dinner for our last night in CR. Wanted something other than Costa Rican food so opted for Jalapenos. The food was so good, some of the best Tex-Mex we’ve had (and we’re from Texas so that’s saying something). The restaurant was very cute and the staff were nice as well.

Very fast service. Jelepenos rolls was good for appetizer. Burrito and Chimichanga was OK not great. Owner speaking fluent English was a plus.

The beef quesadillas, chicken tacos, and beef enchiladas are generously portioned and delicious, showcasing tender meats and vibrant flavors. A fantastic dining experience overall!

Such a cute authentic place to eat yummy meals such as tacos, burritos, fajitas and many more. We bumped into this when walking down the street and it was full, so thought we'll give it a try. We weren't disappointed. The atmosphere is superb, all the decoration creates a nice vibe and the stuff is really friendly and attentive. I can very much recommend this place.

El Patacón is a delightful culinary gem that will surprise even those who think they don't enjoy arepas. The menu features an array of mouthwatering options, including veggie-stuffed arepas filled with perfectly seasoned cauliflower and broccoli, as well as crispy empanadas. However, the star of the show is undoubtedly the fried green patacones, which can be enjoyed with beef or shrimp for a satisfying meal that strikes a perfect balance between healthiness and flavor.
We ate at this place two days in a row because the patacones were SO GOOD! Oppose to other food offered in the area, the patacones with veggies were the right mix between healthy and tasty. We highly recommend them. Additionally, the staff and owner were friendly and spoke English. The restaurant has a rustic atmosphere and the prices are fair.

I've had Arepas before where I live in Minnesota so I decided to check this place out. I had the fried green plantains stuffed with pork rinds and the Colombian sausage Arepas. Amazing. Best food I had in Costa Rica, although I didn't really go to any fancy restaurants. The guava juice was also amazing as well as the service. They spoke English.

We stopped here for our one-night stay in Alajuela and had a fantastic experience. We were tired and hungry and our waiter graciously seated us and took our order even though the kitchen had technically closed 5 minutes before we got there. Food was delicious - we got arepas - and service was great!

Fantastic food. I always thought that I didn't really like arepas. But the arepas here were soooo good. We got one veggie which was stuffed with cauliflower, broccoli and other tasty well seasoned veggies. We also got some excellent empanadas and the fried green patacones with beef and shrimp. Everything was delicious. And the pina colada was huge and excellent
