Tarcoles in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Tarcoles, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Tarcoles is best known for the Tárcoles River, where boat tours let you see some of Costa Rica’s largest wild crocodiles at close range and spot waterbirds along the mangroves. Nearby Carara National Park offers accessible rainforest trails and excellent birdwatching, including a good chance of seeing scarlet macaws. The village sits near the central Pacific coast, making it a convenient base or stopover between San José and beach towns like Jacó and Herradura. From the famous bridge viewpoints to simple seafood restaurants, Tarcoles gives a glimpse of local life along with its wildlife attractions.
With favorites like Soda El Guácimo, Parque Nacional Carara, and Crocodile Bridge, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Soda El Guácimo and Vista Mar so you can get the best taste of Tarcoles while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Crocodile Bridge is a fantastic destination for those eager to observe crocodiles in their natural habitat without spending a dime. Visitors can easily park near local restaurants before crossing the bridge, but it's wise to keep valuables out of sight due to occasional thefts reported in the area. Once on the bridge, you’ll be greeted by an impressive sight—often several crocodiles basking on sandy banks or swimming lazily in the river below.
Crocodile Bridge is a really cool stop if you’re driving through the area. It’s a major bridge over a large valley and river, and the crocodiles that live below are usually out sunning themselves, making it perfect for photos. There are sidewalks on both sides of the bridge, but the southwest side (right-hand side if you’re coming from San Jose) typically has the best view. There are also some restaurants and gift shops nearby, and parking is just along the side of the road. If you’re heading to Jacó or further down the coast, this is the perfect “mid-drive, stretch your legs and grab some food” kind of stop. On the way back to the airport, it’s also a great spot to pick up last-minute souvenirs.

We saw 9 crocodiles in total! Definitely worth a pit stop if you are driving past the area. We parked at the side and no one asked us to pay for them to watch our car. Perhaps it is because we were there at 5pm. What a unique experience, I recommend!!
S C — Google review
We saw two crocodiles and since it’s a free spot to look at them, I would definitely recommend it for making a quick stop. Also good place to grab a coffee and take a few minutes of rest.
Luka U — Google review
Crocodile Bridge is beautiful. The day we stopped all the crocs were in the water and not sunning up on the shore. But the views alone of the scenery and the river are breathtaking. Nice small eateries and gift shops. Great place to take a break on your drive.
Jana — Google review
Although we arrived midday there were 14 very large crocodiles right beneath the bridge. They weren’t moving much but it was still worth the visit. It’s free and there are plenty of souvenir shops. We parked at the north end of the bridge which was where the crocodiles were.
Phil — Google review
One has to park near the bridge, and walk on the path, designated for pedestrians. We could see many alligators down under the bridge. If you don't want you take the boat cruise, this is a neat way to watch the cricodiles.crocodiles. This is not ticketed, it's a public path.
Deepta A — Google review
Great stop on our way to Dominical. We got smoothies and lunch! Saw some crocodiles and got to shop!
Jennifer E — Google review
Super crowded spot to see a few crocodiles laying around on little islands with a lot of garbage on them. It’s cool for a minute but isn’t anything special. If you’re transferring between cities, it’s a spot to stop quick but don’t go out of your way for it.

Nature & Parks
Parque Nacional Carara is a vast national park renowned for its dense rainforest, diverse wildlife and picturesque hiking trails. The park boasts interconnected loop trails that allow you to customize the length of your hike. While exploring, keep an eye out for exotic birds with the help of binoculars and playful monkeys like spider monkeys who may shake branches around you.
Beautiful national park with a large variety of plant, insect and animal species. When we visited there was no shortage of specimens to see in their natural environment. The walking through the park is very easy so young and old can easily partake. Load the Merlin app and you'll be able to identify many different bird species. Monkeys are plentiful. Bring a rain jacket, binoculars and sturdy waterproof footwear. Bug spray is helpful. The bugs weren't bad, but there were a few. It is one of the smaller parks, but very nice and very convenient to Jaco.
Barry B — Google review
Amazing park!! We saw white faced monkeys, tons of macaws, poisonous frogs, a bat, a tarantula, eyelash viper, parrots and other tropical birds, etc. etc. Hiiiighly recommend hiring a guide when you get to the park (cash only, we paid $35 pp) - we wouldn't have seen/noticed anything but maybe the macaws & frogs without the help of our amazing guide Andre! And they will get up close shots with their scopes for some incredible photos.
Courtney P — Google review
We came as soon as they opened but unfortunately didn't stay more than 40min because we forgot to bring our bug spray. It's a must for this park we were immediately surrounded by hundreds of bugs. They don't sell any at the park so make sure you bring your own. We bought our tickets online for 10$. There were guides at the entrance of the park which would be smart to get one they are able to spot the animals and insects a lot easier than most people. I believe they charge 25$ per person for around 3 hours. We'll be back prepared for the next hike
Maurice S — Google review
Get your ticket online. The entrance was no line at 10am. The trail was reasy to follow. It started raining during my walk. The frogs and snakes started moving. It was really dark in the dense parts so prepare for that. There was biting horse flies but the are easily neutralized. Mosquitoes weren't an issue for me even with my shirt off during the heavy rain. Overall great trail ill have to return to experience it on a sunny day. I walked up to the croc bridge. Its 2 kilometers and felt a bit far esp with 18 wheelers flying by. I'd recommend a taxi for most. But its a neat spot with food and crocs and macaws flying around. Check it out for sure.
Cyrus B — Google review
Carara National Park is a hidden gem for nature lovers! The biodiversity here is incredible—you can see everything from scarlet macaws to monkeys, butterflies, and so much more. We opted to explore the park with a local guide, and it made all the difference. Without their keen eye and deep knowledge, we would have missed so much of the wildlife that was camouflaged or high up in the trees. The trails are well-maintained, and the experience felt peaceful and immersive. Highly recommend hiring a guide—you’ll walk away with a deeper appreciation for the park and its amazing ecosystem.
S N — Google review
We really enjoyed walking through this park! I would recommend stopping by. It'll take a couple of hours to go through and look at all of the vegetation and inhabitants.
Darrel B — Google review
Visited on a sunday in early August 2025. Complicated system of ticket purchase must be changed to make it more easy, especially for some not-so computer savy types like me! So we spent about 15 mins trying to get on-line to purchase the tickets and that was no nice. But everything else is nice in this park! Walk slowly, search out the mixted bird flocks - find the antbirds! If you find birds you will be really really be getting your birding fix, we got Bicolored Antbird as well! I would recommend a guide to anyone not in full knowledge of the difficulties of finding wildlife in such a dense, dark place. Otherwise, selfies and jungle photos easy!
Stamatis Z — Google review
Very nice well marked trails to hike on, saw many different types of birds, insects, (leaf cutters ants careful where you step) and we saw a type of wild pig moving around in a group of 6 or so, a very enjoyable hike with some monkeys coming down to get a look at us

El Guacimo is a remarkable restaurant that offers an exceptional morning meal. They serve a fantastic rendition of the traditional Tortilla Alinada, which is a handcrafted tortilla made with corn and cheese. This delicious dish is accompanied by their renowned homemade sour cream. The breakfast menu also includes delectable gallo pinto, sweet fried plantains, two fried eggs with a tender yolk, and beef tongue on the side.
Our first Soda stop in CR and this place was great! Good food with great flavor and friendly service. The ceviche was amazing. Price was good also, recommend stopping by and getting a bite to eat.

Delicious food and very friendly staff! A great place to stop on your journey. We enjoyed gallos and aliñadas and the most delicious café con leche. Would gladly stop again.

By far the best Costa Rican food we ate! Large portion sizes. Nice, open-air atmosphere. Very much enjoyed it! We stopped by on our way from SJO to Playa Hermosa. Recommended by AirBnB host. Takes credit cards.

Pork chop perfection! The flavors were insane, and the service was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend this spot!

Lovely place by the side of the road to eat and refresh. Small goods like mixed nuts and ice cream and pastries. Clean bathrooms. Portions were good and meal was delicious. Service was timely and responsive. Casado con chorizo shown in picture.

Delicious food, quick service, great prices. Excellent traditional Costa Rican food. Make sure to try the tortillas. The medio Casado portion is very generous. The natural juices are delicious. Highly recommended stop.
Alexis W — Google review
Our dinner plans failed so we ended up here just before closing (at 6pm) and we were glad we did. The Casado was plentiful, tasty, and very inexpensive at about $7.50 per person. Service was fantastic.
Kory D — Google review
Excellent food and service. The perfect place to stop for a good meal between Jaco and San Jose.

Restaurant
During a day tour, Vista Mar restaurant provided visitors the chance to savor a traditional Costa Rican dish of their choice: steak, chicken, or fish. The portions were generous and the flavors truly delightful. The staff was friendly and accommodating while offering a decent view of the ocean across the street. With delicious cuisine, exceptional service, ample parking space, and picturesque scenery, this establishment undoubtedly ranks as one of Costa Rica's finest dining destinations.
Grilled sea bass was outstanding. Fresh and well prepared. Very kind and helpful servers. Just the right amount of attention. Not too much. Finished up and caught a lovely sunset across the street at the beach.
Donald G — Google review
We had lunch here in this open to the outdoors restaurant. Warm breeze coming off the Pacific. You can walk through a tunnel under the highway to go to the beautiful beach.
Robert L — Google review
Great typical Costarrican sea food from the Pacific Coast, starting by ceviche (not Peruvian but "tico") and delicious rices and pasta with shrlmps and/or other sea food. They also offer other elaborations like tuna filet, besides beef and chicken. The attention is awsome, very quick, kind and efficient. The atmosphere is relaxed and they offer an 'underground' passageway (crossing over the highway) to access the beach and take a last look before heading back to the city. For sure, not the last time we will visit them!

$$$$ but delicious. Beautiful ocean views, fresh seafood entree options, and quick service.
Michael B — Google review
Great food, had shrimp cured in lemon juice as an appetizer, very tasty. Our local driver, Alban, suggested some fried plantain patty with beans, guacamole, and pica sauce to top the patty with, those were almost an entire meal by themselves and very good and we only had a half order. You can see the ocean but the main highway is right there also so it can get very noisy if there is much traffic. Great service from friends of Alban's, and the owner came by too. Very friendly folks here and they can cook. It was about $20 US, per person ordering mainly appetizers, only one of us got a large seafood soup, get the soup with the cream base, it was very good.
Bruce C — Google review
Nice restaurant with great service. I had the snapper, spinach with shrimp and cheese in a white sauce. It was served with vegetables and some white rice. The serving size was large, and the food was very tasty. My server was extremely attentive and pleasant. The restaurant is located across the street from the beach, and there is an underground tunnel leading to the beach. Just in case you dont want to ctoss the street. I would visit here again.
Angela G — Google review
Was here as part of a day tour. They offered a traditional Costa Rican dish inwhich you got to choose steak/ chicken/ Fish. Decent portion and extremely great tasting. Very fresh Staff was friendly and had an okay view of the ocean across the street
Andrew A — Google review
This was my favorite meal in Costa Rica. I shared the seafood platter with a friend. It was absolutely excellent! So fresh and delicious! Lobster, Manila clams, razor clams, fish, squid, and shrimp in a garlic butter sauce. We also shared the mixed seafood ceviche not knowing how large the portions are. The ceviche was also delicious and fresh, but it wasn't the best ceviche I had during my week in C.R. I would certainly recommend this place and definitely recommend the seafood platter, as it was excellent!! I would also recommend to arrive very hungry as the portions are very generous. I found the service to be very prompt, attentive, and friendly. I enjoyed the open beachy vibe and large wooden tables as well. It's a nice casual atmosphere with excellent seafood. It was a little pricey but worth it.
