National Parks
Watamu Marine National Park & Reserve is a stunning UNESCO Biosphere reserve in Kenya, known for its soft sandy beaches and tranquil surroundings. The park offers an incredible experience of observing various fish species and breathtaking corals. Visitors can also catch a glimpse of dolphins by arriving early. The park provides opportunities for ocean sports, diving, dhow trips at the creek, and enjoying local food while ensuring high-level security with Kenya Wildlife Service marines Rangers.
Snorkeling at Watamu Marine park was amazing. The sea dirty visibility was bad but we enjoyed ourselves. Team Twende NTV.

I don't know how it is during the low season but we came during Christmas time and honestly it is a complete shame. AND absolutely not what I think " conservation" should look like ! We started from blue bay beach. The departing site and organisation is a complete mess. You can see in the pictures attached what is the " glass" boat, just a small dirty plexiglass frame! 20+ boat full of noisy Italian tourist side by side chasing these poor dolphins, one of the boats overturned in the waves. I even heard from one of the boat pilots that some people died there last year, and honestly I'm not surprised according to how it is going on! The snorkeling spot doesn't worth it at all, hundred of people in the sea, dead corail, see weeds and only few fishs. Even the equipment that had been given to us is crappy and dirty.

week in paradise with my fiancé at Watamu's stunning coastline. The crystalclear blue waters and scattered islands created the most breathtaking backdrop for our getaway. The pristine beaches felt like heaven. Watamu isn't just a destination,it's pure magic. Already dreaming of our return! ✨🏝️
Akasa A — Google review
The Park is not well taken care of, the controls are not efficient. In the evening the tides can get very high and pose a challenge to safety. Before boarding or making payments for the boat ride be sure you have contacted the right person as you can be easily be mislead. Otherwise the scenic view is great, the glass boat ride to Wakawaka Island, the seafood and traditional dance at the Island gave us a memorable experience. Captain Ali was our guide and he was excellent.
Katrina M — Google review
Lovely turquoise blue waters creating a tranquil environment ideal for holidaying and beach fun. Visiting the Sardenye low tide island was out of this world...Then served with fresh sea fish...prawns, octopus, red snapper and squid for lunch in the island made it an experience and a half.
Lee B — Google review
Best experience ever, the view of the dolphin 🐬 😍 👌 , snorkeling, a swim 🏊‍♀️ 😀 and walk on the reef was amazing 👏. The rate was only ksh 1,500 for the 5hrs activities. I would recommend this anytime you visit watamu . It's a walking distance from Turtle Bay villas, turtle Bay resort and hemmingways watamu. There are more villas around where you can get very nice accommodation as well as AirBnBs.
Valentine R — Google review
White sandy beach, friendly locals and pocket friendly. If you want a dedicated guide, try the Sorpresso boats. You will never regret. For a full day pay (3k), you get to see the dolphins, snorkeling (they provide gears), if you're lucky you'll see small sharks. Them you'll have sea food for lunch then back at the park. A full day is from 9am to 4pm. Very worth it!
ID_Mwarabu — Google review
The experience was out of this world❤️ Seeing the difference types of fish swimming right below you was phenomenal! The corals are simply breathtaking ⚡🤍 There are Dolphins too!!!! ( Discalaimer, you have to get to the park early so that you can catch a glimpse of the dolphins, if it's after twelve, don't let the boat guys talk you into going claiming that you'll see the dolphins cause they'd be lying to you! Be there as early as 8am for the ultimate experience!!!⚡ Out of all the places I have visited... This was the most beautiful!

Bar
Lichthaus is a popular hotel and watering hole located in Watamu, Kenya, offering stunning views of the Indian Ocean. The hotel's restaurant serves a variety of local and international dishes, while the bar provides a perfect spot to watch the sunset over the beach. With activities like snorkeling, diving, and fishing trips available, guests can enjoy their stay surrounded by beautiful scenery. The trendy atmosphere attracts a social crowd who come to relax and enjoy the peaceful getaway with music and delicious food options.
Lichthaus is a nice chill location. We enjoyed a beautiful sunset, some stunning views and some very well crafted cocktails. Having been there during the weekend and during the week, I recommend during the week. We went on a Thursday and there was enough people that it was enjoyable but not over packed. We had an enjoyable time, highly recommend
Nalani M — Google review
Spending the day at this spot was pure paradise. I spent hours stretched out on a net suspended over the water, with the ocean just beneath me and the breeze brushing over my skin — it honestly felt like time stopped. If you’re looking for a place to disconnect from the noise and just be, this is it. The view alone is enough to keep you there all day. With nothing but clear blue sea in front of you, the sound of the waves, and the warm sun above, it was the perfect escape. I didn’t even need much — just good vibes, the ocean, and a comfy spot to sink into. The team at the venue was fantastic. Friendly, attentive, and always nearby if you needed something — but never overbearing. They let you enjoy the space at your own pace, which made the experience feel even more personal and peaceful. I ordered some drinks and snacks throughout the day, and everything was fresh, chilled, and well-prepared. The menu wasn’t overcomplicated, just good food done right — which is exactly what you want when you’re spending the day in swimwear, lounging above the sea.
Rachel M — Google review
good for the vibe and music, food nice but expensive (tourist prices in a tourist location). Great to check the sunset from the nets. Reserve in advance! Count 7k kes or more for a couple (dinner and drinks)
Gill B — Google review
The food was a bit mid. The front desk is good but the servers leave a lot to be desired. I enjoyed the nets and the vibe of the place though. The food quality could be improved and I felt the price was not worth the quality or portions. Go there for the atmosphere and sunset views and vibe but maybe not food
Garang K — Google review
Probably the most overrated restaurant in the area, food quality and portions are so overpriced, self Service (although the place was empty and it’s not easy to get up since the all the sitting are on the floor) the hammock are not safe or comfortable at all. Sitting options are not comfortable Mango margarita tasted like water It’s not worth the hype about it
Loujayne A — Google review
Over priced food. The portions are too small for the price paid. Octopus was quite basic, no flavour. The type of seating arrangement is not for everyone. Very uncomfortable.
Kirollos G — Google review
Lichthaus looks like one of those trendy, boho-chic spots that promises a unique experience but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype. You pay a 1,000 KES cover charge (redeemable with food or drinks), which is fine, but the service model feels more self-serve than relaxed. I had to go to the counter to order, and at one point a waiter actually came to tell me my own order was ready — I was honestly surprised. I might have overlooked that if the food had been good, but it wasn’t. I ordered chicken wings and they were cold, served suspiciously fast within five minutes — and it tasted like it too. The one saving grace is the view and the hammock over the water, which is definitely beautiful, but not enough to carry the whole experience.
Kalkidan G — Google review
We reserved a table for sunset. It quickly became too crowded, too noisy and too much stress to order drinks and food. Would I go again. Not sure. If so only for drinks and/or not at sunset, but sometime less crowded. It is also quite expensive for Kenya, but it seems this is the case for many restaurants in Watamu.

Restaurant
Crab Shack Dabaso, located in Watamu, is a community-run restaurant built by the Dabaso Creek Conservation Group. It aims to promote eco-friendly activities and protect the environment. The restaurant is well-known for its famous crab samosas and boardwalk. When searching for dining options in Watamu, Crab Shack often appears as a popular choice.
Nothing can beat walking to your candlelit restaurant across the boardwalks through the mangroves to watch the sunset over the lake whilst eating fresh prawns, crab, and lobster. I didn't get any photos of the food, mainly as it was too good not to eat immediately! In many ways, I want this to stay a hidden gem as it's an amazing find, but they deserve every success as the restaurant is a local community project and does so much good for the local area and habitat. Five stars, amazing!
Jennifer H — Google review
Crab Shack is a gem — the sunset views are absolutely breathtaking, and the whole place has a quirky, charming vibe. I had the chili crab and it was delicious — full of flavor and perfectly cooked. It’s a fun, relaxed spot that’s also great for solo travelers. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Watamu. P.s. you need to reserve for the seats by the edge of the deck.
Kalkidan G — Google review
Went for a sunset dinner. The crab samosas are PHENOMENAL. We shared a seafood platter. The seafood was fresh, tasty and perfectly seasoned! The octopus and prawns were the highlight of the platter! Definitely the best seafood I’ve had. Service was also good and the ambiance is relaxed with an amazing view of the sunset on the creek!

The Crab Shack in Dabaso is a charming spot set on a wooden boardwalk overlooking the mangroves, offering a truly magical atmosphere. The seafood is fresh and perfectly prepared, with the crab being a must-try house specialty. Friendly, attentive staff and stunning views make it an ideal place for a memorable meal in Watamu.

We saw the sun go down in real time. I really loved walking through the mangroves to get to the restaurant. It was a bit crowded when we went, its probably not like that all the time. Service was good.

Kobe Suite Resort is a casual resort in Watamu, offering relaxed quarters with beach access. The resort features a gorgeous beach bar and restaurant where guests can enjoy cocktails and Mediterranean dishes. With two outdoor pools, tropical gardens, and a private beach area, the resort also offers massage services on request. Additionally, it provides meeting facilities, concierge service, and a 24-hour front desk.
We had the absolute best time at Kobe Suite Resort – what an incredible experience! This stunning boutique hotel completely stole our hearts. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and kindness by the staff, who were truly some of the most genuine, caring people we’ve ever met. Always smiling, always attentive – they made us feel so special every single day. The property itself is beautifully maintained and set on the most breathtaking beach we’ve ever seen – picture-perfect and so serene. The suites are spacious, elegantly decorated, and thoughtfully designed. The only small downside was the mattress, which was a bit firm for our liking – but everything else about the room was simply amazing. And let’s talk about the restaurant – WOW! It quickly became our absolute favorite part of the stay. From lunch to dinner, every single dish was bursting with flavor. We genuinely couldn’t bring ourselves to eat anywhere else – the food was that good! The seafood, in particular, was unforgettable – I still find myself craving it. We were never once disappointed; in fact, we just kept coming back for more. If we had to mention anything that could be improved, we’d say the breakfast could use a bit more variety, and the pastries could be fresher or more refined. But honestly, these were minor details in what was otherwise a flawless stay. We left with full hearts and already dreaming of when we can return. Kobe Suite Resort is a hidden gem, and we can’t recommend it enough!

Spend few nights with my friend here. Nice beach and pools, clean environment, the breakfast is good. Our room was stuffy, like mold smelling. We told the guy who checked us in but he brushed it off saying the only other option was adding more money for their emergency room. The phone charging ports are weird with only one single cord to be used in the whole room( both bedroom and living room). The bar is nice, though we didn't end up having a drink there because the guy serving drinks told us to move from where we were seated to the backside (as the boss didn't like us seating there). It came accross as condescending. Overall an okay place, not worth the money.
Mumbi C — Google review
I came here with some friends to enjoy the premises with a day pass and have lunch at their beachside restaurant. The location is beautiful with friendly and attentive staff and nice comfortable loungers. The staff served us fresh orange juice when we arrived, which was a nice touch. In addition to the beach, there are two pools with sparkling crystalline waters what were calling my name. A beautiful setting all around. The restaurant overlooks the water and has a great menu — my friends and I all ordered different meals and shared from each other. Looking forward to coming back here.
Melissa M — Google review
If you are looking for serenity, please beware of many boats full of tourists comming to the beach directly in front of the hotel. You cannot swim peacefully as you are surrounded by them from all sides. If I knew it, I would choose different place to stay, as the beach is the most important factor to me. The hotel itself is nice, clean, with spacious rooms with nice view over the pool and garden. The food is tasty, staff is nice.
Kri S — Google review
Beautiful boutique hotel with an amazing beach. Resturant on site with a variety of options. Many resturants near by too just a short drive away. Rooms were nicely designed. However hot water in the shower was rear. Mattresses on beds could do with some upgrades. Pool towels were not aleays readily available. They use a card system where you can only get 1 towel per person and so most of the time you are stuck with a soaked towel. Breakfast included was OK - average. Overall good stay. Excellent location and breath taking views of the sea.
Priyen — Google review
What a lovely memorable place. A visit here will remain with you forever. Not a generic 5 star experience here that you can expect in dubai. This is a watamu 5 star experience. We had the villa, which had a good amount of privacy and it's own facilities. The pictures don't do it justice. The food at Kobe and the service is also excellent. Then you have one of the most exceptional beaches in the world. Powdery white sand, the sea at low tide that you can walk 200 metres out to and clean warm water.
ANISH S — Google review
I cannot say anything about accommodation as we were not staying in Kobe, but the restaurant is definately one of the best establishments in Watamu.
Oliver L — Google review
Beautiful location with direct access on one of the most beautiful beaches of Watamu. Spacious suites but with A/C just in the bedrooms, which makes the rest of the apartment barely livable during the hottest hours. Pillows are uncomfortable as the Long chairs on the beach and pool area. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Italian restaurant on the property, but the quality is not top; it is better to explore other eating options in the area.

Taste: the Dubai chocolate flavor was amazing!! Had to go back for it. Really nice creaminess too. Location: The outdoor seating overlooks a parking lot so I would suggest to put something (plants or woven mats) to hide that view of the terrace Price: a bit pricey — 700 for two scoops on the smaller size.
Melissa M — Google review
Struck by the serene atmosphere and the music that perfectly set the mood. The quality of the food and drinks is top notch,, their menu is diverse that includes not just gelato, but also protein powders, probiotics, collagens and more. Their customer service is exceptional, Catherine in particular deserves a special mention she is incredibly sweet and attentive. ❤️‍🔥 Overall this place is a 10/10. Whether you’re there for the health products, gelato or just to enjoy the ambiance. I highly recommend

They are good at racial profiling. "Payment profiling". The waitress even after showing her our receipt which was printed at their cashier counter she still went ahead and stopped us to ask for proof of payment. A confirmation message. Which begged the question if they do that to all their customers. That was terribly distasteful. Unfortunate even.

Went on a quiet weekday afternoon. Lovely dessert hangout. Tucked behind the roadside shops so might miss it if you aren’t keen enough. Great legit ice-cream options and baked foods. We got the stracciatella and the after 8. Perfectly creamy and loaded with flavor. All-in-all a perfect 5!

Nestled in the lush greenery of the jungle, Gedi Ruins Malindi is a captivating archaeological site that offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Swahili people. Dating back to the 13th century, this ancient Swahili village features well-preserved remnants such as mosques, palaces, and town houses. The ruins are not only an important research site for understanding ancient Kenyan culture but also house a museum displaying a wide array of excavated artifacts.
Gede Ruins is like stepping into an ancient Arab ghost town — spooky, magical, and oddly charming. The old stone walls whisper secrets of the past, while the nearby Snake Park serves up slithery entertainment, from tiny noodles with fangs to full-blown pythons. And the monkeys? Total hustlers. Flash a peanut or banana, and boom—they’re your new furry backpack!

Entry was 500 ksh. No guide is needed, but they might give you useful information about the ruins. However they might not give you the full tour around, since the outerwalls are further. A good cultural stop on your way to Lamu. It took us about 1h

Visited in Dec 2022. Butterfly farm welcomes you. Interesting history on the ruins. Appreciated work done by snake park especially with the community and anti venom.
Daniel W — Google review
Very authentic place. We had a knowledgeable tour guide called Hudson who was patient and explained to us the set up of the Ruins with the different houses and potentially who lived there. The excavation we were told was only a fraction of what was still buried underground, which was fascinating to us. We also visited the snake park, which could use a bit of a revamp. The last stop was the butterfly house, which was a bit underwhelming to be honest. Worth the stop over as a morning activity on your way to Watamu though.

Gede Ruins in Watamu is an ancient Swahili settlement abandoned in the mid-17th century. The site includes a fortress, mosques, tombs, and villages within a tropical forest inhabited by monkeys and other wildlife. Visitors can hire guides who provide informative tours of the area. It's recommended to bring snacks like nuts or bananas for the monkeys or buy them at the gate. The ruins are photogenic and well-maintained, offering a great representation of nature.
Amazing history dating back more than 500yrs. A very big town this was. If you have kids be careful to hold their hands through the visit. There are very deep ancient holes and wells in a few places. A fall would be fatal. This was my second visit and we really enjoyed. Much recommended.

Supermarket
Nestled within the Blue Moon Shopping Centre, Blue Marmalade is a delightful international supermarket that has become a staple for both locals and visitors in Watamu since its inception in November 2015. This charming store offers an impressive selection of fresh fish, homegrown salads, herbs, and vegetables alongside some of Kenya's finest brands like The Well Hung Butcher and Highlands Castle Farm.
Blue Marmalade is a small but essential supermarket in Watamu - just next to the Mtwapa chiefs offices and Discover Watamu.  They have been up and running since November 2015 and are going from strength to strength finding new and interesting items to attract our guests. They stock a range of things you may need from delicious local cheeses, to imported necessities like branded sauces and cereals. The bakery / delicatessan section has just been introduced and includes daily deliveries of baked goodies, sometimes baguettes, sometimes croissants or pizza slices, and fresh cooked items like muffins, sausage rolls, mini-quiches can be found. In addition to foods - Blue Marmalade has a wide range of household goods as well as stationery and of course wines and spirits. It's a large well stocked supermarket which means its easy for you to find what you are looking for. It's probably the most popular supermarket for tourists but it does have convenience store like prices.

We called in advance to find out if they had certain items before driving to them. Pictures from their site.

Certainly the best supermarket in Watamu. But with a new Carrefour opening in November, there will be more competition.

We had a wonderful stay at ocean sports - all the staff were friendly and efficient, the rooms were comfortable and all the food was fabulous. The relaxed, welcoming atmosphere is the same as I remember from 40 years ago! We especially loved the towel animals left on our beds each day! Only constructive feedback is that it would have been great to have a hairdryer in the room.

What a fabulous stay at Ocean Sports – we could not have been happier. The staff are fantastic: warm, helpful, and they really care. This is not a 5-star hotel, but it is an authentic 3-star with 5-star service. The location is amazing, and we were absolutely delighted with our stay.

Great location, friendly staff and good value for money. We stayed there for one night prior to starting a beach villa holiday and rented a family room. While not the most luxurious setting, it was very correct for the price. The staff were helpful and proactive. Help with ground transport. Flexibility in serving a meal although I arrived after kitchen opening hours… I even left a pillow which I was to collect a couple of days later.

I did not stay there, but only came to eat and drinks 3 times and it was really good. I like especially the poke bowl with a reasonable price, fresh and healthy. The view and ambiance is really nice. It's one of my best restaurant in Watamu. Sad that they don't provide free drinking water, it's something i found really smart from them to do, but they stop it.

The atmosphere in the hotel and reflected in the decor is very welcoming, cozy and warm. Being able to watch live sports is great too. The staff are lovely, the receptionists are so helpful and patient and pleasant. The food and drink selection are perfect. Thanks

We came here for lunch before heading back to Nairobi. It was nice to be on the beach, listening to the waves and not be bothered by beach boys. I got the jumbo shrimp and calamari lunch special. My wife got the prawns piripiri but it didn’t have much spice. We will definitely come back.

Resort is very beautiful and well maintained. Rooms are great. Ground staff are nice. The low rating is purely due to the front desk staff. You are not welcomed properly and every time you want help no one is there, you have to chase them down and when you find them they don’t know the right thing. When we enquired about cycling they sent us to a dive center, who sent us back to the front desk. Same as enquries about other activities, it was hard to find the answers. On the last day we were waiting for a driver to the airport past our pickup time. The desk man saw us sitting there. The driver had already been there for 30 mins and had told the staff he was there. They did not connect us together, even though we were clearly waiting at the front. We then had to dangerously rush to airport and almost missed a flight. Also there’s a great restaurant next door in Hemingway.

Positive: nice restaurant, great food, fantastic pizza, nice seaview from restaurant. Beautiful garden. Negative: room was neglected, poorly equipped, just one sacket, not comfortable. Overpriced given the quality

Nestled along the Gede Watamu, Kilifi County Road, Swahili Cafe is a delightful pop-up restaurant that captures the essence of African cuisine. With its inviting atmosphere and friendly staff, this cozy eatery offers an exceptional dining experience from Tuesday to Sunday. Guests rave about the authentic dishes like pilau, coconut beans, and veggie samosas—all made with fresh ingredients that tantalize the taste buds.
My family and I visited Swahili Cafe and were impressed how delicious the food was. We had breakfast and it was amazing. Fresh and tasty. We ended up going back for dinner and it did not disappoint. If you are looking for delicious, affordable meal...look no further! Definitely a must try! They also had a few super cute fur babies around that are very friendly. 10/10 recommend this place! 👌🏼

Day 3

Proximity is everything
For day 3, we bundled attractions like Papa Remo Beach and Watamu Snake Farm and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 6 hours.

Papa Remo Beach is a popular spot in Watamu, located right in the center of the favorite beach area. The nearby 8-room villa and Rafiki Tamu Residential Resort offer convenient accommodations for visitors. At Papa Remo Beach restaurant, guests can sit on the deck and enjoy stunning views of cupcake-shaped coral islands with emerald green icing, as well as golden sandbars and shallow translucent pools along the crescent-shaped beach.
The main restaurant was fully booked when we arrived, but they still proposed us to use the low tables to have lunch. It is still better to make a reservation in high season, like in many places in Watamu. The staff was really kind and professional. The food was very good, we tried some pizze, pasta and salad + desserts. A little minus for the chocolate mousse that was not very good ( especially compared to the delicious chocolate ice cream), I was expecting something with a strongest chocolate taste.
Elodie D — Google review
A lovely location to enjoy some good food. The service was friendly and very quick. We had the passion fruit ceviche- it was well presented- it however didn’t pack a punch of flavour as I thought it would. The seafood platter was generous and definitely needed 2 people to do it justice. All pieces of seafood were perfectly good - including the octopus which wasn’t rubbery- and the seafood was well seasoned. This was an enjoyable dish. Wrapped up the meal with the chocolate mousse. A generous portion but could use a stronger chocolate flavour. The location is lovely. We went on a Friday evening so it was quiet. We were told the parties the location is popular for was the next day ☺️.

My team and I were lucky to be in Watamu on the same weekend when the Papa Remo Beach Party was happening. The atmosphere was amazing – great vibes, good music, and refreshing drinks. The only downside: service at the bar was a bit slow. At times, we had to wait up to 15 minutes just to get a drink. With a simple briefing for the staff, this could easily be improved. Still, nothing to complain about overall – Papa Remo remains one of the best beach locations with excellent music and a fantastic party mood. Just keep in mind, the beach party does not take place every weekend. Best to check the Papa Remo website for upcoming events.

Well, done execution of the food with a wonderful view of the water. High quality food with a casual atmosphere. We ordered lobster linguine and tagliatelle with lobster and shrimp. The waiter has a good enough grasp of English and understanding of the menu to be able to answer questions, not always common with some of these coastal resort areas. Well done!

The location is just one of the best you’ll ever come across. Food portions are small ! DJ on sat 20 September really killed the vibe which was such a pity. Tables cleared out when he stopped and started music played it loud, switched it off completely and then comes in with full volume. Please please get some consistency with the music

Ambience is a definite 10/10😍🔥🔥With a breathtaking ocean view. The owner was so nice not to forget how accommodating and welcoming the staff was as well. The Watamu Snake Farm is a sanctuary and research facility that houses a diverse collection of African snakes, tortoises, and amphibians. Visitors can take guided educational tours to learn about the conservation efforts aimed at protecting endangered snake species. The farm also features an educational center where guests can discover more about snake conservation and witness the milking of snakes for venom used in life-saving antivenom production.
I had an amazing time at the Bio-Ken Snake Farm in Watamu! This place is a must-visit for anyone interested in wildlife, conservation, or simply learning something new. The farm is home to over 300 snakes from more than 20 species, and the tour was both fun and highly informative. Our tour guide, Reuben, was fantastic—knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about snakes and their conservation. He took the time to debunk some common local myths about snakes, which was eye-opening. What really stood out to me were the farm’s conservation efforts and their work in educating locals about the importance of coexisting with snakes. They’re also doing incredible work in anti-venom development, with a dedicated research lab on-site. It’s inspiring to see their future plans to produce antivenom locally, which will be a game-changer for the community. Overall, this was a great experience that combined education, conservation, and fun. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Watamu!

It was a fun and memorable experience visiting the Snake Farm of Watamu. This place is especially great for kids who are into animals and eager to learn about reptiles. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly, making the visit both educational and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it to everyone—whether you’re visiting with family or just curious about wildlife, it’s worth the stop! If you are in watamu !!!!!

A great experience - Very educational and welcoming. It is well made and all the reptiles look very healthy. They also showed us the lab and explained to us how they make anti-venom. Next time I'll do the Snake Safari!
Zoher A — Google review
It was a great experience for the kids, we saw snakes feeding as well as being milked. Had the entire process explained in kid friendly language. The friendly ibis was the icing on the cake

Great experience and our guide Emma nuclear was so enthusiastic about the snakes and experienced. I definitely recommend the place.
Irene M — Google review
I had one of the greatest experience as a snake enthusiast, Kyle Buster and Florian Finke not excluding Maria were a great team. Taking us through the different snake species, snake identification (Venomous from non-venomous) snake bites, how to avoid getting bitten, treatment and snake rescue. I would encourage anyone to visit Watamu Snake Farm and learn more about snakes.
Ismail H — Google review
An absolutely amazing experience! The museum is beautiful, well organized, and full of incredible snakes – a truly impressive collection where you can admire fascinating and rare species up close. We also joined the Snake Safari with three members of the staff, and it was simply outstanding: wonderful people, extremely kind, caring, and always ready to answer every question with passion. The safari itself was thrilling, educational, and fun at the same time, giving us unforgettable memories. We even purchased a snake, knowing that everything we paid directly supports their foundation, which works on research and the production of antivenoms – an incredibly important mission for the health and safety of local communities. A place where science, nature, and humanity come together. Highly recommended to anyone visiting Watamu!

Well maintained and managed tiny zoo. Ticket price seemed a little steep, but included a knowledgeable and friendly guide. Place was clean, orderly and landscaped. “Milking” demonstration to collect venom for making anti-venom was cool to see. Also got to hold 2 day old tortoises, which was very cool. Fun for both adults and little kids.

Watamu has a very unique and interesting beach experience. A large portion of the coast is covered tall rock cliffs. This lends itself to some every unique exploring and some cool stuff to see. High tide is beautiful with the waves crashing over the rocks. The beach portions are predominantly white sand and are great for sandcastle building or beach sports. The wildlife is less than some other parts of the coast and the sunrise/sunset can be hard to see because of the coves, however it's a gorgeous place to live or vacation.

Pilipan Restaurant is a hidden gem within the Mida Forest, offering stunning sunset views over Mida Creek. Run by the Dabasco Creek Conservation group, this unique restaurant sits above the tidal creek on raised boardwalks and platforms. It's known for its scrumptious cuisine, pleasant atmosphere, exceptional service, and tempting selection of cocktails.
We stopped for an early dinner and the aesthetic is gorgeous. Blue and white, clean, gorgeous kitengela glassware. Lovely tables and terrace seating for the evening. The cocktails were innovative and interesting. We really enjoyed two kinds of fish curry. But be aware that they are charging European prices, not serving at Kenyan price points. For residents, this would be a special occasion place.

Beautiful views across the lake from either the table seating or terraces make this spot great for sunsets, plus a fabulous range of cocktails and light bites. Sadly they'd run out of prawns the night we visited, but the crab tacos were fresh, zingy and delicious! I did 4h of lessons in Watamu and another 4h in Diani and had the best experience I could've asked for! The instructors are super competent, they really take their time for explaining everything to you in detail and they have a lot of patience. I am in 2 minds about sharing this as I don't want too many people to know about this gem of a place and this beautiful kite spot and school. Local Ocean is an incredible conservation group in coastal Kenya. I led a group of students in a volunteer project based out of, and in collaboration with, LOC and it was one of the most impactful experiences of our semester. The learning here is engaging, profound and interactive -- The team is so smart, welcoming and supportive -- And everyone we had the pleasure of meeting shared their passion with us, and it was infectious. LOC works with dexterity, creativity and soul. I hope to be able to partner with them again in the future, and I would highly encourage anyone visiting Watamu to pay them a visit.

This is a great place to visit for kids or adults. We had a full tour of the facility, learned so much about turtles, and got to see the turtles that are currently under care at the hospital. You can adopt a Turtle too. Great for children and adults. Donation is required for entry

Service to humanity and beyond is the description I'd give for this place. It's amazing how much damage as a human race we inflict to every other species we share th earth with especially Marine life. But don't despair there's a solution. Be mindful. It will cost you 500 kes for residents for a 45 min to 1 hour tour around the facility. As the mantra goes around here, don't destroy what you came to enjoy.

The food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully served, you can tell a lot of care goes into it. It’s definitely a spot I’d go back to and happily recommend to anyone visiting Watamu.”

My companion and I recently dined at your restaurant on 13th of January, 2025 and while we greatly enjoyed the taste and presentation of the dishes, we unfortunately experienced severe food poisoning shortly after our meal. To give you some context, we have been traveling through Kenya for the past three weeks and have dined at various restaurants every day without encountering any health issues. This was the first time we have experienced any form of food poisoning during our trip, which leads us to believe that it may have been linked to something we ate at your establishment.

Mario and his team were so friendly and welcoming. I will njoyed the pizza so much! Authentic Italian and so good with imported spicy salami! I am gonna go back ASAP!! I saw a few entrees go by as I waited for Pizza..they looked mouth watering!!

Great food, great views of the beach. The service is amazing and food delicious. One of the best in Watamu. The restaurant has new management and has been renovated.

We found worms in our seafood salad. 🪱When we raised it with the waiter he/she started arguing with us about not paying for the salad (we where happy to pay for the other items) despite of acknowledging the presence of worms! Then we had to wait 20 minutes whist he had a conversation with the manager. The manager agreed with us, but never came to apologise for the incident. Sadly, the salad was the best tasting food, the focaccia was very dry and the bruschetta slightly burnt, pasta was OK.

Incredibly yummy samosas prepared fresh for us on the spot. Honest to God, best ones I have ever had. Nice ambience of the place only makes you wish to come back more often!

Every was gracious, the food, the ambiance, the lake, the fish, our house at the other site, and the sunset. Heavenly 👌🏼

Tasty tasty food, beautiful ambiance with lively sunset view and friendly, prompt service. Ecotourism in service of protecting the mangrove!

The best prawns I have consumed. Quantity worth the cost. Flavour out of this world. I used my hands to eat and licked my fingers after every bite. The chips came the way I wanted them. Super super meal Simon I look forward to you implementing the ideas we shared that embrace conservation measures

Nice for lunch, dinner or brunch.... They have kayaks to go around the mangrove.

Really cool location and good food. Loved the prawn samosa. Fresh seafood. I went at night but sunset time or during day would be much more interesting.

For sure one of my favourite place in watamu. We’ve been by there to enjoy the evening with our friends, this is the best spot to enjoy the sunset as it is a very chill place. We ate a lot of sambusa while we’ve been in watamu but for sure none of them was as good as the ones we ate at Prawns lake, I still dream about those. The people there are very friendly and you can also have a canoe ride there. Will come back there for sure

Tamu Beach Bar & Restaurant is an exquisite Italian seaside eatery that offers a splendid atmosphere for any small celebration. The location is stunning, and the appetizers, seafood, desserts, and drinks are all scrumptious. To make a reservation, call +254 (0) 769218514. The venue boasts a charming ambiance with its pristine white decor and prime beachfront position. Arriving before 6:30 pm allows patrons to fully savor the picturesque view.
Very quaint and clean atmosphere with very well executed food. We ordered two house-made pasta dishes: the tortellini and the gnocchi with curry sauce. Very interesting fusion concept that works well. Not super close to the water, but still provides an excellent view from any seat in the house. The hostess, who is Italian, is keeping a close eye on things and seems to do a good job with quality control. Waiters are attentive and usually respond fairly quickly. Food comes out within a reasonable time.

To be honest I didn't know restaurant foods could taste this good. I didn't take any photos of the food cause when it first came I was like "hmm this portion is a bit small. " I ordered beef and chicken skewers with a side of chapati, veggies with sauce. The first bite of the beef skewers had my mouth feeling orgasmic... Then the chicken... Pow... Flavors just hitting your mouth. I usually eat my meals so fast but this time I savored every bite, chew, swallow (everything). Then a thought hit me why did I think the portion was small cause the meal felt so fulfilling. The atmosphere was in per with the tastiness of the meal. Everyone was in conversation but weirdly it wasn't loud. You could hear the waves adding to the mood, the sea breeze hit your face and the food.... THE FOOD WAS HEAVEN ON EARTH. You have to go there to taste it.... The flavors blend so well

Love! We were treated so exceptionally well, nothing was too small for the waiters and servers. Thank you for your kindness. A very reasonable price for a huge sunbed and a lovely complementary refreshing lemonade too. Will be back!

Fantastic Tamu!! We came two days in a row and must say everything was above expectations! Classy, clean and comfortable design of the grounds, restaurant and beach club area. The Coastal Mediterranean cuisine is on par with what you would taste dining in Sardenia in Italy at a esteemed establishment. They use premium local and imported produce for their dishes. Highly the Octopus salad, eggplant parmigiana, selection of pizzas and pastas, and of course the more extensive and unique selection of wines that you tend to see in other places on the coast. We also enjoyed lounging at the beach on the sunbeds and enjoying perfectly made Aperol Spritzes! The greatest highlight however are the team members hosting us, of note Julius the experienced and the restaurant supervisor and Benson the Masái taking care of our comfort of the beach. On both days we met two different Italian Managers that are both very present and offer a genuine welcome, acknowledgement and have an empathetic management style with their team. To top things off the beach walks and swim in the crystalline blue waters in front Tamu are to dream of. We look forward to our return and will consider staying in the hotel adjacent to Tamu. With many thanks from your Thailand based guests Watida, Daniel and Dianna! Well done!!

A must-stop in Watamu! A warm welcome by Emily (Owner?/Manager?) set the tone. The views are beautifully one-of-a-kind. The food was mouthwateringly delicious and served by attentive & friendly staff members.

Went to Tamu restaurant during Christmas time and I think definitely it’s the best restaurant I’ve been to in the “Kenyan riviera”. Very clean friendly and professional staff, food was awesome. You definitely have to book in advance as the place is almost packed. Sun beds are very comfortable and great sea view. It’s the best place to be.

Day 4

Off the beaten path
For day 4, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Hell’s Kitchen. Not quite as popular as Mida Creek, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 8 hours.

Such a stunning place! The rocks with all their shades and colors are absolutely amazing. We made a tour with a local guide. It was very interesting. And the sunset over hell's kitchen is really something you don't want to miss.

Visited Dec 2022. Great experience but the heat is no joke. Preferably visit early morning. Interesting history to it. It's an initiative to support the community as told.

A great experience, Upon arrival you are met and introduced to your guide (500ksh). They provide information about the site and guide you through the canyon. Our guide was great at pointing out food photo spots and allowing us to explore. You get around 1 hour in the canyon. We arrived at around 3:30/4:00 so we could enjoy sunrise on the rim. This was a great experience. They have a bar area selling beers and cold drinks at reasonable prices. Overall a very good experience in a unique setting

A visit to this breathtaking site was nothing short of magical. The naturally sculpted landscapes, with their dramatic layers and earthy hues, create a surreal and almost otherworldly experience. The rock formations are uniquely captivating—especially when viewed through the natural rock arch, which perfectly frames the scenic background like a painting. The site is peaceful and not overcrowded, making it ideal for anyone seeking tranquility and a deeper connection with nature. Photography lovers will be in paradise—every angle offers a new perspective worth capturing. The contrast between the rugged terrain, vibrant earth tones, and clear blue sky is simply spectacular. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and carry water. There’s minimal shade, so visiting early in the morning or late afternoon is ideal. Although signage could be improved, the terrain is relatively easy to navigate for those who enjoy light hiking. This is a hidden gem that deserves more recognition. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a tourist, or a local adventurer, this site is a must-visit. I left feeling inspired and in awe of Kenya’s raw natural beauty. Highly recommend!

A MUST in your buck list when visiting the Kenyan Coast. A lot of agencies offer the guided tour and it’s definitely a tour to do. Realizing that Kenya nature has much more to offer than Safaris and Crystal clear sea, these canyons are truly a gem ! Johnathan was our guide, 22 years of experience. We got lucky to have him!

Hiking area
Embark on an unforgettable adventure at the Arabuko Sokoke Forest KFS Gede Gate, a stunning coastal reserve located just north of Mombasa. This expansive 420 square kilometer forest is a treasure trove of biodiversity, boasting over 260 bird species including vibrant sunbirds and elusive ground thrushes. As you wander through its lush landscapes, keep your eyes peeled for fascinating reptiles and amphibians like the twig snake and squeaker frog.
I would like to recommend visit to arabuko sokoke forest to all the nature lovers. I would also like to recommend a tour guide Mr Jonathan Baya who will enhance your experience with his proffesional guidance and ability to spot and name animals around. We were really impressed by his experience and knowledge. Thanks Jonathan.

I went with a group of students and hired two guides with the intention of seeing elephants. Although we arrived on time, we were taken on an unsolicited walk through the forest, which wasted time. By the time they finally brought us to the elephant area, it was already getting dark and we didn’t see any elephants. One of our buses couldn’t fit down the path, so we had to walk in small groups, but soon they realized the park was closing. We ended up scattered, with some students alone at the entrance in the dark, unsupervised. It was our van driver, acting on his own, who rescued those left along the path in the dark. Very poorly organized and unsafe. Not recommended.

Beautiful all round . We paid 1220 for two citizens and one none citizen . There’s a 2400 option for a guide but we opted to just go explore by ourselves. There is a cultural manyttas there and the place is just stunning .
