Shocking lack of any concept of service. We checked in and the aircon wasn't working. First I was told someone was ok the way. After a no show they said again they'd send someone and yet no luck. Finally I demand to see the manager and insisted on a different room. Only at this point I was given a different room where the AC again never really worked. At no point was an apology offered until I spoke to the manager who was at best patronizing. The rooms are tired and need updating but most importantly the staff some basic training in customer service. So my only advise is avoid this hotel. It's just not worth it.
Amol K — Google review
Not our type of campsite. No river. Chalets might have been a better option. Decent toilets and showers but campsite lacks general housekeeping and tidiness.
Mark B — Google review
Stayed 2 nights in a chalet. The rooms are very old and the bathrooms barely functioning, so definitely in need of an update. I first room we stayed in the AC wouldn't change speed and the water came out a brown colour, which was horrible. The huge bed and mosquito nets were welcome. 2x pools and a play area for the kids. On the banks of the river, so good for watching the sunrise. Food in the restaurant was the highlight - congratulations on that. Staff friendly and smiley but not especially proactive.
Mr R — Google review
The price is way too high for this old, outdated hotel. There is so much wrong with it, we left early to find a better place to stay. We did not get our breakfast pack, there is only one plug, the bathroom door can't close, you can sit at the bar for one hour and still not get a drink (there was no one else), there is a TV, but no remote, and last but not least: the staff is constantly on their phones. This morning, halfway during breakfast, they run out of toast and flapjacks, but instead of putting up more, the cook was watching video's on her phone. Same for the bartender last night. Very busy with sports and WhatsApp on his phone, not the people sitting there. Don't stay here, rather pay a bit more for a customer friendly place. The location, outside of Maun, is the only positive I can mention. Although you'll still here the music from town.
Linda C — Google review
Nice Campsite with Power, good ablution, Pool, bar/restaurant. Friendly people and fair prices. Not super quiet but okay for in town.

Chutney Indian Restaurant in Maun is a popular spot known for its South Indian cuisine, although it also offers a mix of Indian and Chinese dishes. The food is highly regarded by both locals and international travelers, making it an ideal place for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. The menu features a wide variety of options, including paneer masala and dosa, all served quickly with attentive staff.
Consistently great tasting South Indian cuisine, always served hot and in record time. It has lots of options for vegetarians as well looking to dine there. Located in a quiet office block, there isn't a lot of traffic, so if it's a quiet lunch or dinner you're looking for, definitely the place to go. A personal favorite in Maun.
Yaone K — Google review
Three of us had dinner here and it was absolutely excellent. I had the paneer masala, along with a dosa both were very tasty. The menu is large, but well organized, with a wide variety of options for carnivores and vegetarians alike. The service was fast and staff were attentive. We will eat here again if ever passing through Maun. Thank you, Chutney.

Our favourite camp in all of Maun. Tom, the manager is just a happy helpful soul. The lodge offers a variety of shared camping, private camping and ensuite tent options. Really nice campsite. We booked place with a private ablution so we had private kitchen, toilette and showers together with space for table and chairs and grill. There is a swimming pool with bar (you can also eat there and the prices are resonable) and wifi is available at the reception.
Ania K — Google review
Great place to camp in Maun. The private campsites are the best. Sadly we could not stay on ours for an extra night so we had to move to the public campsite. The public ablutions seemed to have issues with hot water and in the morning of our departure there was virtually no water pressure. But all in all all we will definitely return.

The Okavango Delta is a vast river delta in Botswana, known for its diverse wildlife and stunning natural beauty. The Moremi Game Reserve within the delta is home to a variety of animals including hippos, lions, and elephants. One of the most captivating aspects of the Okavango Delta is its permanent waters, where channels and lagoons showcase the ever-changing light and moods of the waterways.
Amazing experience! Simply out of this world! Beautiful faune, quiet and peaceful river cruising with lots of crocodiles, birds, and if you are lucky, hippos, elephants, impalas and pumbas...A once in a lifetime experience particularly if you can do bush camping on the river bank. Incredible experience!
Jovia J — Google review
The camping trip in Okavango Delta turned out to be more interesting than expected. The boat ride out to the camp site was the highlight of the trip as the local guides skillfully maneuvered the dugout canoes across the wetland. And then there was the bush walking to see the different animals in the delta. Totally enjoyed the local songs and dances performed by the local guides during the campfire.

We asked for picnic under the stars and we got just that...it was beautiful 😍 the game drives, the food ...the infinity pool ..we swam while watching elephants and other animals from a distance. Definitely a place to check out...Worth evert penny!

One of the miracles of nature - a bucket list destination. The Kgalagadi desert turns into a lush green wetland here in the largest inland delta in the world. It's the story of four geological faults - two of them, the panhandle faults, channel the Okavango river where it builds up against the Gomare fault following the seasonal rains in the Angolan highlights. For six months of the year the river breaks the fault and islands, floodplains, logoons and channels build up over some 100km because of a fourth fault line, the Kunyere fault. The Okavango Delta is one of the best preserved wild life areas in the world home to lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, the African wild dog, giraffe and countless species of antelope, small predators, birds reptiles and insects - not forgetting crocodile and hippopotamus. Enjoy viewing game right on the water from a Mocoro, traditionally a canoe made from a single tree trunk and now a more eco-friendly version made from fibreglass poled over the shallow flood plains. Stay over at one of the lodges in the area I recommend Jumbo Junction, a comfortable smaller one, run by couple Sue and Greg, at the north-western edge of the Delta close to Gunotsonga.
Louis L — Google review
Amazing wild life, we sleept one day in the delta with the locals that sailed us into the delta in their Mokoro's, sang around the bonfire at night, and had an amazing night ski to gaze at. The day after went by with a plane ride over the delta, where we saw tons of animals from top (careful with the plane ride if you get carsick easily.)

For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Moremi Game Reserve, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Nxai Pan National Park. All together, your day would be filled with about 24 hours of non-stop fun.

National park
Moremi Game Reserve is a vast 1,900-square-mile wildlife sanctuary located on a river delta. It's home to an array of iconic African animals such as cheetahs, rhinos, elephants, and lions. The reserve is often accessed through Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Maun International Airport serves as a hub for flights to various lodges in the area and offers direct connections to Johannesburg in South Africa.
It is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking views in Botswana. The okavango delta is a sight to see once in a lifetime. We had a safari as well and saw plenty of animals, but unfortunately, no wild cats were spotted. But other than that, it was a great experience, and it is definitely worth the visit again.
Dhara B — Google review
Wonderful game reserve. While it is definitely worth a visit, it is some ways to get there over some difficult dirt roads so make sure you have a good safari vehicle. Not as crowded making for a more secluded feel. You can drive through the reserve with north and south gates.

This well known public national Park is about 2 hours drive on unsealed road from Maun. Alternatively, you can stay at local camp or hotel near thepark. It's worth a visit as you can see a number of wildlife including variety of antelopes, elephants, crocodiles, Cape buffaloes and hyenas. There's a charge for entry. The park is clean and open 7 days a week. There are several unofficial sites where you can have a picnic, some of which are river side.

Poorly informed staff. No working toilets or running water at gates. Very few animals seen. Roads mostly flooded and staff had no problem directing people into flooded roads that we warned them about. Very difficult to navigate with limited roads and signs. Staff at gates couldt communicate with other camps since the power was down and even the solar didnt charge. We did not reach our camp within two days and had to overnight next to the roads because the roads were so poor and flooded. No one came looking for us. Real threat if poachers start roaming the park since no one monitors you.

Third Bridge Camp

Campground
Third Bridge Camp is a beautiful area within the reserve, offering an opportunity to see lots of wildlife. The roads can be challenging to navigate, especially due to poor signage and sandy patches. It's advisable to check with the South Gate for road conditions before heading out. Despite some initial anxiety, the drive into Third Bridge was manageable even for first-time wilderness travelers. The staff at registration are friendly and welcoming, providing helpful suggestions for provisions. Tented accommodation provides an amazing experience with abundant wildlife around.
Third Bridge Camp is a unique place, beautifully situated in the heart of the Okavango Delta. The austerity of this unfenced camp gives it an authentic charm and allows for full contact with wildlife. We travelled there in a 4x4 during the current rainy season. The roads were muddy with puddles but passable and we had no problems getting there. We used a camping site that provides privacy and silence. At the same time, it allows you to commune with nature - animals are literally everywhere. You can hear them and see them wandering around the campsite. It is a paradise for nature lovers and photographers but you have to be very careful. Basic facilities such as ablution blocks are clean and functional. There is a small shop on the campsite that offers basic supplies, and internet access, which is a nice convenience in such a remote place. It is probably not a place for everyone, but we liked it very much and will gladly return there :)
Anna R — Google review
On 15 July 2025 this campsite is not accessible by dry road, only watercrossing. Second bridge and Fourth bridge which lead to the Third Bridge Campsite from different directions are both out of service. The loop around Second bridge is only watercrossing. I am on self drive safari and was not made aware of this fact neither by the Moremi gates staff nor by the Third Bridge campsite staff who took online booking. The Toyota Hilux 4×4 that I am driving is not intended for watercrossing, which I did attempt. Luckily did not get stuck and returned on the dry road. Very stressful experience. After more than 6 hours driving around Moremi, doing the loop around broken Fourth bridge, I end up at the broken Second bridge after dawn, tried the loop watercrossing which was too risky in the dark, and in the end facing to sleep in the bush in open savanna with my husband and 7 y.o. child. What negligence from the park personnel not informing us of this important fact while checking the vouchers for booked campsite and putting our family in danger of spending the night in the wild !!! Very scary and stressful experience!

Absolutely horrible and rude staff. We got stuck on a muddy road at night and lost a lot of time before reaching the campsite around 6:30 p.m. without a booking. They told us they were fully booked and sent us to Xakanaxa, but both bridges were broken and an angry elephant blocked the third road. When we came back, they mocked us instead of helping, even though our car insurance did not allow us to drive after 8 p.m. They made us wait for more than an hour in the dark, insisting that we had to leave. Only the ranger was kind and understanding, he let us stay for the night and truly cared. There was plenty of free space and we only needed a safe spot to sleep. The staff was arrogant and unhelpful, but the ranger was absolutely wonderful. Be careful with animals and insects at night.

Hyena’s ate all our food🫣 The location and bird watching are amazing. Facilities and sites also good. We were told Hyena’s roam the camp looking for meat but didn’t expect them to get in real close and grab the vegetarian food from the cook stove while we were hiding in the car. Next morning a huge male lion walked by while we were packing the tent. This is dangerous. At some point there will be attacks….

Beautifully located in the Moremi Park. We stayed at one of the equipped tents, which was a treat. Night sky is incredible. Wish we had more time here.

Nice rooms but no crockery pots pans or cutlery. The site is intended for prepared campers as there is no food as such in the tuck shop. We were stranded due to car breakdown so we were grateful for a decent bed

We enjoyed our stay here, self drive roof top tent, good sized tuck shop and clean ablutions.

Khwai River Lodge, Botswana

Lodge
Khwai River Lodge in Botswana offers a luxurious escape nestled within the stunning eastern Okavango Delta, just a short flight from Maun International Airport. This upscale lodge features chic accommodations with private decks, some boasting breathtaking river views and pools. Guests can immerse themselves in nature through exhilarating game drives or serene walking safaris, all while enjoying the vibrant wildlife that frequents the area, including hippos and elephants.
Spent 6 nights in Botswana, staying in 3 locations - 2 nights each. Definitely the best, most amazing vacation experience ever. Khwai River Lodge is rustic, in an amazing location, with fantastic game drives, excellent tour guides (Kenny was fantastic), delicious food and absolutely wonderful service/people. Saw amazing wildlife, at times close-up...I believe visiting in April/during the dry season allowed for those close-up experiences. Was awakened one night with an elephant bumping into our tent/rubbing against the front porch for a few minutes. Overall experience 5 stars but had to ding the room as noted below. Purchased some beautiful straw pieces from local villagers at the Lodge. Pool was refreshing. Evening entertainment one night - singing, dancing, from the staff was delightful!

I was on a group safari with a friend and we visited 3 Belmond lodges. The staff at Khwai River was absolutely AMAZING!! Unfortunately, I was sick during the trip and unable to go drives for a few days - such a huge disappointment!! I was able to watch majestic elephants in the distance and the birds on my balcony. The staff took incredible care of me - calling my room to check on me and bringing food to make sure I ate. Our travel agency Ocean Enterprises in San Diego - was awesome! I will absolutely use them when I book a safari here with my family.

Love the location, the amazing staff, and the incredible safari guides. We come here every year and experience life changing moments, breathtaking animal viewing and a silence you can feel all over your body. Words are not sufficient for sharing the experience. It changes your life forever! Thank you dear family at Kwai River Lodge!

Fantastic staff and accommodations!! Service: Ms Oriole’s staff felt like family after our two nights there. Miss Gee, Mr Kenny, Ms DK, Mr Watch, Ms Gladys, Mr Fortune, Mr Gee: thanks for taking such good care of us. In particular, Mr Kenny and Ms DK: Thank you so much for all your insider info about what life is like living in Botswana. Thanks for the tour of the local village, and thanks for the most EPIC sundowner ever. Also thank you both for teaching us about the indigenous flora and fauna of the Kwai River area. And Mr Fortune, I very much enjoyed connecting with you about your people, your culture, and the song about your beloved kgosi Linchwe II. I can’t stop listening to that beautiful song. And also HOW DO I FIND YOUR MUSIC SINGLE? I want to hear it!!! Accommodations: The rooms were incredibly fancy tents! Adequate wifi, AC, there was a lovely pool right on the river, a TV room, and an elevated “hunting-blind” to watch the elephants grazing at the water’s edge. This was our fourth lodge this vacation. Everywhere we’ve been so far has had such exquisite food (including this one), we were aching for some boring chicken and rice which the staff was more than happy to accommodate for us. It also wasn’t boring at all! Delicious but mild enough for what we needed. We also had a medical emergency in the middle of the night which many members of the staff handled for us professionally and with care. They even had a nurse on call and medical supplies on site to provide for us. Crisis averted thanks to the staff. Location: The lodge is on private property that the company shares with the local communities. Every single unit is facing the Kwai River, and it was common to sit on our front porch facing the river and see twenty elephants, hippos, and red lichwe without having to turn my head even a little. If you visit the pool, be prepared to play guard over your bag from the adorable velvet monkeys everywhere. And the property is not fenced, so you may have to wait on a path for a moment while an elephant walks by. On our game drives we saw Bush Buck Impala Water Buck Giraffe Elephant Velvet Monkey Chacma Baboon Warthogs Hippopotamus Kudu Mongoose Lion And even a cheetah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ASK FOR FOUR HANDS MASSAGE!!! It’s transformative! Incredible experience. Thank you all. I miss you already. And Mr Fortune deserves a raise!

We came here on a photographers workshop. This is my third time at this lodge. Even though the place is immaculately maintained, it's desperately needing renovation, which is overdue, thanks to Covid. The staff is very eager to help and are very attentive. The Safari drivers/guides are excellent, understanding light for photography. The food was delicious, and for the most part healthy. I missed a juicy steak. The pool is lovely and so are the massages.
Regina F — Google review
An incredible safari experience! The location cannot be beat – you look out on the river and can see hippos and other animals throughout the day and night. The lodge is well equipped, with friendly staff and well maintained (albeit sometime tired) amenities. We went to Khwai after three nights at Belmond Savute, and Savute was by far the nicer of the two camps (food, service, cleanliness and facilities), but the combination of both lodges was great if you have the time to do both. The game viewing was great – we saw a leopard make two kills, wild dogs, elephants, zebras, giraffes, and lots of antelope and bird varieties. We went in the rainy season (February), which meant it was wet and took a while to find the animals, but the park was very quiet, and the animals were very active.
Andrew R — Google review
By far the best holiday to date. Khwai is so peaceful by the river and the animal sightings even from the rooms are impeccable. The food is amazing and we were so spoilt. We had Jimmy as a guide and he was amazing. He shared so much knowledge with us and his respect for all the animals big or small is really admirable. I learnt so much from him and I would go again in a heartbeat.

Visitors can enjoy walking safaris and boat safaris that bring them close to non-dangerous game species such as hippos, giraffes, elephants, lions, and crocodiles. The sanctuary also boasts a diverse array of African bird species.
Amazing mokoro experience, inexpensive, entertaining, historic, and beautiful. Book a trip through Okavango River Lodge.

Nxai Pan National Park

National park
Nxai Pan National Park is a protected area featuring expansive salt flats and a cluster of ancient baobab trees. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including cheetahs, offering visitors an authentic safari experience. Travelers can opt for self-drive exploration or guided game drives to observe the Big Five animals in their natural habitat. South Camp provides a tranquil oasis amidst the wilderness, with abundant wildlife sightings and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.
The drive to South Camp is not for the inexperienced in dry months as the hot sand makes driving a challenge non the less once there at the camp its an oasis and wanting to stay longer! Friendly staff, clean campsites, spotlessly clean ablutions. The wild life is amazing so are the sunrises and sunsets. Elephant quietly stroll through campsites and an ever inquisitive friendly Jackal visits in the evenings
Frank B — Google review
We spent 3 nights in the park and enjoyed every moment. We were the only people at the south camp. Clean and looked after ablutions, private and spacious camp sites, lots of wildlife. We visited in February. The roads are easy manageable with well prepared 4*4. We were lucky to watch pride of lions every day, families of bat-eared foxes, zebras, elephants, impalas and many more animals. Can’t wait to come back.
Alexandra P — Google review
Once you're inside Nxai Pan the safari truly begins. You'll spend most of your time enjoying untamed nature at the camps and watching animals in the wild. You can choose to explore by self drive or get a game drive through the park. The term 'Big Five' was originally coined by big-game hunters to refer to the most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa in the late 1800s. Today, however, the Big 5 of Africa are the top animals that tourists want to see on wildlife safaris. And this is exactly what you will get without a struggle.
Arnold A — Google review
It took almost two and a half hours from the park entrance on A3 to get to the Baines Baobab Trees. The drive is mostly on deep sand tracks, the trees were huge in diameter but not too tall. I don’t think they are bigger than the redwoods in California but still interesting to see. Whether it is worth that long drive or not really depends. I didn’t think so, but my traveling companion seemed to think otherwise.
Clement C — Google review
Give it a miss. Rude gate staff, miles of sand driving and only one water hole with water in August. We saw giraffes, elephants and zebra. Park looks run down and the roads are terrible. Baines baobabs are nice, but not worth the money or drive. VERY disappointing experience.

Spectacular Experience at the Pan!!! This pan truly delivers a magical bush experience. The game viewing is satisfying while we didn’t spot lions this time. Hearing their powerful calls in the distance was spine-tingling. What made it unforgettable was the majestic elephant that calmly strolled past our camp to the watering hole during breakfast. Seeing such grandeur up close was a rare privilege. Campsite Amenities: The campsite itself impressed us with its thoughtful design: flushing toilets, hot/warm showers, and plenty of shade under generous trees absolute luxuries in a setting like this. We enjoyed two peaceful nights, surrounded by nature, but with the comforts that make all the difference. Travel Tip: Getting there is part of the adventure! The terrain is intense, so we strongly recommend taking the "sandy" route it's far less corrugated and much kinder to your vehicle’s suspension. One of our rigs did lose both front shocks due to the relentless bumps and lack of cooling breaks, so take your time and plan well. Final Thoughts: Despite the challenges on the road, the experience was absolutely worth it. Nature gave us a front-row seat to something special, and we’re already counting down to our next trip back!

The Dusty Donkey Café, located conveniently near the airport, offers a pleasant ambiance and serves healthy and hygienic food. The salads are particularly enjoyable, as is the breakfast menu. However, it should be noted that the service can be quite slow at times, with waiters occasionally making mistakes with orders. Despite this drawback, the café remains a popular choice for dining out. Additionally, it also operates as a boutique selling various items such as cosmetics and food products.
The ambiance is to die for, The service was great 👍...Ordered the Steak, chips and egg...the meat was so tender. I recommend

Our group went to the Dusty Donkey twice while I was in Maun. Both times the food was absolutely delicious. The staff are extremely welcoming and ensure you have a positive experience whether it be dine in or take out. The cafe itself, very clean and cozy vibes all around. Highly recommend this place if you are waiting for a flight or visiting Maun. I ordered the Crushed Avocado toast both times then a Oat Hazelnut Latte & ginger apple tea. Thank you to all the staff that work there, I now have a favorite cafe abroad. 💖

No visit to Maun is complete without a visit to Dusty Donkey or Hilary's. DD is the ideal meeting/greeting spot, waterhole, planning and chilling venue. Characters abound - the staff are slick and friendly and the traders are sweet and non-pushy. The menu is varied and the service quick. Don't worry about the free range chickens - they roam and (I assume) are not on the menu 😜

What a disappointment! We arrived at 2:00 PM on a Sunday, excited to try this new place. The waitress seated us and handed us menus, and ordered our drinks which got our hopes up — but just a few minutes later, she returned to say the kitchen was closing and they wouldn’t be serving food anymore. Why seat customers and give them menus if you’re not planning to serve them? It’s incredibly frustrating, especially when your website says you're open until 3:00 PM. It doesn’t take an hour to prepare a wrap and a salad! If you’re looking for a place that actually values its customers and communicates honestly, I’d recommend going elsewhere. We definitely won’t be returning.

Day 3

Keep it simple
For day 3, these 5 places should be enough to fill your day with something exciting to do in Ngamiland East. Start the day with Makgadikgadi Pans National Park and make your way through the city to get to Eagle Island Lodge, A Belmond Safari, Botswana. This should take about 21 hours of your day.

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

4.5
(259)
National park
Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is a vast area of shimmering salt pans, covering 3,900 sq. km. It's home to diverse wildlife including hippos, wildebeest, zebras and flamingos during the wet season. The park was once part of Lake Makgadikgadi and now offers a unique landscape with baobab trees. Visitors can stay at nearby lodges or camp within the park.
After a few long days of game viewing driving in the Khwai/Moremi areas we decided on some quiet days here, we’ll pass on heading to the salt pans. We didn't expect particularly good game viewing along the Bo-teti river but we'd just do that. We entered one afternoon around 2pm, after dropping some tables and chairs at our SKL Khumaga campsite we set off along the river bank. And what an afternoon. A long drought for Botswana left the Boteti dry apart from a few remaining waterholes along the river. Everything was either heading to or from water. Thousands of zebra, as many wildebeest, impala, kudu and giraffe. And elephants. Down on the river bed more than 200 spread over a 15km drive. And when on the banks curving in the sand track there seemed an elephant behind every bush either coming or going to the river. The following morning, same animals but only 10% of the volume of the previous afternoon and few ele-phant. But again by 2.30 pm literally a few thousand animals covering the dry riverbed, unbelievable.
Kevin S — Google review
Makgadikgadi Pans National Park presents one of the most visually and ecologically fascinating landscapes in Africa, and its map captures this uniqueness in bold strokes of emptiness punctuated by surprising lifelines. Located in northeastern Botswana, the park encompasses a portion of the greater Makgadikgadi salt pans—among the largest in the world. While the wider Makgadikgadi region includes both protected and unprotected areas, the National Park section specifically lies to the west of the pans, bordered in part by the Boteti River. At first glance, the map reveals vast open spaces—much of it appearing as a blank canvas. This isn’t an error but a reflection of reality: these are ancient salt pans, remnants of a vast prehistoric lake. The pans dominate the eastern portion of the region, and within the National Park boundary, the map shows the Western edge of the Sua Pan and parts of the Ntwetwe Pan, with their flat, white expanses often resembling a moonscape on satellite imagery. One of the most important geographical features on the map is the Boteti River, flowing along the park’s western boundary. This river is seasonal, but when in flow, it becomes the heartbeat of the park. The map marks its winding course, with associated lagoons and pools attracting herds of zebra, wildebeest, and antelope, especially in the dry season when animals migrate here from the salt flats. Points like Meno a Kwena, Khumaga Camp, and Tiaan’s Camp (just outside the official park boundary) are often highlighted as viewing bases along the river. Roads on the map are sparse and rough, emphasizing the park’s wild nature. A few 4x4 tracks run from the Khumaga Gate in the west to other entry points like Phuduhudu Gate to the south. These are typically sand or salt-crusted tracks, with the main internal loop near the Boteti often being the only passable route during the rainy season. The dry pans, although seemingly empty, can become traps for the unwary driver after rain—and the map often includes advisory notations about seasonal access and vehicle requirements. The map also marks designated wildlife-viewing areas near the river and some fossilized islands in the pans, such as Njuca Hills and Kubu Island (although the latter technically lies outside the park in a community-managed zone, it’s often included in broader Makgadikgadi maps due to its cultural and scenic significance). Key features included on a quality map of the park would be: Camping areas (e.g., Khumaga Camp inside the park and community camps just outside) Vehicle routes and 4x4 trails Seasonal waterholes Wildlife migration corridors Gates and park boundaries Fauna is not specifically marked on the map, but informed travelers know that the Makgadikgadi zebra migration, one of Africa’s largest and least-known, travels seasonally between the pans and the river—driven by rainfall and grass growth. During the rainy season (November–April), the pans become shallow lakes, attracting thousands of flamingos and other migratory birds. The map’s elevation and water flow indicators can help pinpoint these transformation zones. In conclusion, the map of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is a guide to extremes—dry vs. wet, silence vs. seasonal abundance, and desolation vs. sudden, explosive life. It’s a map not of dense infrastructure or tourist stops, but of time, space, and nature’s slow drama, unfolding across an ancient salt-encrusted desert. It’s a place where the journey is as significant as the destination—and the map reflects just that.
Krrazie — Google review
We stayed at a near by Safari camp and visited here multiple times on our stay. It is very dry and dusty here, and the rivers are very low but it has its own beauty. Since this is a national park, you can’t go off the main roads to follow animals like in a private reserve. You also can’t go in after 6pm so there are no night game drives. You can camp in this park and there are many self-drive tourist in here. It’s very bumpy so you must be able to handle the jostling and bouncing. We saw many male elephants who weee often aggressive. We didn’t see any female elephants or babies. We saw hippos, giraffes, ostrich, jackals, monitor lizards, crocodiles, vervet monkeys, baboons, many hoofed animals, many birds, etc. We did not see any cats in this area. If you visit this area, mix it with a trip to Okavanga Delta or Chobe.

An amazing place....the vastness of the salt pan & the history behind it ...its unbelievable that it was once a lake! The odd animal crossing this dry pan.
Geri F — Google review
This is a fabulous place to visit, which we did via a guided sunset safari tour. The pan is normally flat and salty, however due to previous rains it was transformed into an inland sea, hundreds of square kilometres of 1 to 1.5M deep waters, which is home to masses of pelicans and flamingos. Whilst out on the trip we also saw blue wildebeest, boab trees and many types of bird. A must see location 👍

Baines Baobabs

Baines Baobabs is a remote cluster of ancient baobab trees in Botswana, famously depicted in paintings by explorer Thomas Baines in 1862. Visitors describe it as a magical and amazing place, offering a unique experience of being out in the wild. Accessible via a sandy route, it's recommended to book in advance if planning to stay overnight. The site is particularly beautiful during the rainy season but may pose challenges for vehicles.
It is an amazing place with a magical feeling. One of the best experience we had in Botswana. Very far away from everything and you are out in the wild. You have to like it but definitely worth to have a night there. The way to go there is quite sandy but part of the experience. We stayed at Nxai south camp afterwards so a good combo for two or more nights. Book in advance if you would like to stay there and ask about the way at the gate. Otherwise just enjoy this amazing and beautiful place.

Amazingly giant trees at the edge of the salt flat in Nxai Pan. The drive is more than one hour on sand tracks from the entrance. The ranger advised us to make sure there were no lions hidden among the trees before getting out of the car, but there were almost no animal sightings along the entire drive.

There are not many places in Botswana where I have seen a cluster of boababs together. Add the history of these trees and remoteness of the area and it is worth a visit (if you are prepared to brave about 40km (×2) of a bad sand road).

The Tshilli Farm is a magical retreat located on the outskirts of Maun, offering a unique experience waking up to the sounds and sights of a wild forest. It's an ideal place for celebrations with friends or family getaways. The rustic yet spacious and comfortable accommodation provides privacy in its five guesthouses nestled in the shade. The location at the edge of the Okavango Delta offers tranquility and beautiful surroundings. Guests can enjoy delicious meals from an amazing kitchen with à la carte menus.
My friends and I had a wonderful experience at the Tshilli Farm. Situated just outside of Maun. Adi & all his staff were extremely accommodating. The Tshilli farm is so inspiring, sustainable and a place to disconnect & reconnect at the same time. The accommodation had everything you need, clean and comfortable. There is a stunning Pool, fire pit and bar. Delicious Meals were prepared for us and we were lucky enough to eat produce directly from the farm. I hope people who enjoy the bush, nature and the simple things in life find their way to The Tshilli Farm 🙏 … must try the Chilli 🌶️

A charming and peaceful place ! The setting is calm and beautifully decorated, with a terrace overlooking the plains — perfect for watching the sunset and spotting a few animals. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. The lodge is stunning, tastefully decorated, and very comfortable. The open-air bathroom is a real bonus. You're fully immersed in nature, with a beautiful view of the forest right from your room — and the company of monkeys often nearby. The breakfast is good. The value for money is excellent. We highly recommend this place!

We spent one night at The Tshilli Farm & Lodge, staying in the cabins. They were very spacious, clean, and had a large bathroom. Just a short walk away there is the common area, where you can have a meal or a drink. There’s also a swimming pool and a viewpoint. The place itself is truly beautiful. The farm is dedicated to growing chilies in a sustainable way, supporting local sustainable agriculture. Totally recommended!

Amazing place to stay just outside of Maun. The rooms are incredibly unique in the forest with the sounds of nature all around. The food is delicious - all the ingredients coming from the farm - and the staff are all great. Adi, the owner, managed to organise a last minute heli safari (at low cost!) for us which was an absolute highlight. If you are looking to stay somewhere in the Maun area, stay here rather than the town!!

Our stay was magic! Thanks to the whole team and to Adi for making it unforgettable. Recommendable for people who want to experience nature in a remote area. Also, we had the best burger we ever ate at this farm.

Thsilli Farm was the perfect way to end our two-week trip through Botswana and Namibia, and without a doubt, it was our favorite lodge. The rooms are simply incredible—completely open with no windows or curtains, just mosquito nets, which let you fully immerse yourself in the surrounding nature while still feeling safe and comfortable. Waking up to the sounds and sights of the bush in such an open space was truly magical. The food was another highlight. The local chef is fantastic, we loved our breakfast and lunches, especially the quesadillas! One thing to note: the lodge can be hard to find due to the lack of signage along the route, but following the Google Maps directions will get you there without any issues. Just be sure you have a 4x4 vehicle, as the road from Maun is mostly sandy tracks. Overall, Thsilli Farm offers a unique and unforgettable experience that combines comfort, natural beauty, and excellent food. Highly recommend!

Escape to these charming cottages, Treat your taste buds to heavenly delights, and enjoy the comedy stylings and expertise of the bartender proprietor.

Sadly we did not have the pleasure of staying at Tshilli farm but enjoyed the hospitality for several nights (and days) whilst residing nearby. The food was excellent on every occasion, and whether it was drinks at the bar or relaxing at the pool, it was all with the great personal hospitality that you can only rarely find! Adrian went over and above for us on every occasion and always made sure his guests were well catered for no matter what they desired (think helicopter tours straight from the deck - not a problem)! Loved every minute of our time with Adrian and his great team - We will return! P.s. check out the Tshilli sauce - best in the world! Along with some other brilliant organic produce!

Shipungo Safari & Tours is a locally owned tour operator based in Maun, Botswana. They offer a range of safari tours and activities in the Okavango Delta and other parts of the country. Visitors have praised their competent guides, attentive team, and delicious freshly prepared campfire meals during their 6-day camping safari. The company is known for providing detailed itineraries and quick responses to inquiries, making them a reliable choice for travelers.
We were a couple on a private safari, and from the very first moment, they were very attentive to us and our needs. For example, we are vegans, and they went out of their way to prepare us an elaborate daily menu with alternatives to meat, like vegan sausages. The location of the camp was unbeatable, right in front of an open plain where lots of animals would gather, and you could watch them while having breakfast or lunch. Our guide, Kem, was both the guide and driver for our safari. It was clear that he loved what he was doing, and he made sure we could fully enjoy the experience, not only by seeing as many animals as possible but also by teaching us many fascinating facts about the park and its wildlife.
Alberto D — Google review
They were extremely accommodating at very short notice as our other plans fell through and we were looking for an activity provider in the late afternoon. Mark actually came over to our lodge personally to discuss our options for the next day, resulting in a relaxing mokoro adventure. All the staff and guides were helpful and friendly and we had a lovely picnic in the wild for lunch. Great experience.
Mieke F — Google review
Here is everything you need to know 1. It is NOT a full day of animals viewing safari driving. It is about a 2 hour drive each way to get to the entrance of the park whereas the iternary claims it is only a 1 hour drive 2. Safari driving/ activities is only about 3 1/2 hours of the whole day. 3. You get picked up in a safari vehicle and drive 2 hours on the highway with wind being blown in your face and they do not offer blankets for the drive- so bundle up. 4. The safari vehicle that we had was malfunctioning and the speedometer was not connected.

We did a seven night mobile safari starting from Maun all the way up to Kasane with overnights in different parks. Our guide Voice went above and beyond to fulfill our wildlife sighting wishes. You can truly feel his appreciation for guests and genuine passion for his work. The camp team was friendly, attentive, and helpful. Also, the food exceeded expectations, especially given the limitations you have on a mobile safari. Communication with the administration was fast and responsive, and they accommodated our needs to tailor the trip accordingly. I can wholeheartedly recommend Shipungo Safari.
Clemens S — Google review
Great safari experience, for a rate that was very competitive compared to other online prices for Maun (you can find cheaper prices for everywhere if you're in person, but then you run the risk of not having things available on your dates). We felt very happy with the experience we got, which was tailored to our specific needs in having a flight we needed to get back for. Like all safari companies in the area, they subcontract with local guides, and LK (Somale Tours I believe is his personal company) was fantastic and incredibly knowledgeable. Had a fun mokoro experience and a wonderful game drive with two comfortable nights camping as well. Overall highly recommended, and easy to deal with when organizing everything online.
Daragh F — Google review
Absolutely fantastic two day tour with our guide Voice. Might have been the best two days of my life. Saw every big name animal imaginable and enjoyed a great night of camping as well. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Our One Day Mokoro trip was wonderful with Shipungo. The guide was on time at the pick up time, brought us to the Mokoro station and on the way already the first animals crossed our way. At the Mokoro station, we got to know our poler Julius, who made this day unforgettable. After a one hour ride with the Mokoro, we made a two hours bush walk with him and came so close to giraffes, we have never been before. Furthermore, zebras, buffalos, hippos, elefants and other animals were good to watch. At no time it became dangerous or anything, as Julius watched the surroundings carefully. He told us many new things about animals on the one hand but also gave everyday information about the everydaylife on the other hand. On the Mokoro ride back to the station, we had a look at his fishing nets he place the same morning, watched further elephants and hippos and arrived safely at the station. The lunch in between was wonderful, as we had it with a wonderful sight on a hippo pool. Thanks again for this perfect day!

First of all, if you are a backpacker like me who is afraid of wasting your money you have to know that Moremi is totally worthy . Secondly, you have to know that this company is the cheapest so it is a must for you and you have to make sure put it apart from others...but more important it is that you can be certain that this company is totally reliable, I received answers very quickly about everything, they give you a detailed program, nothing is missed. The day of the activity our guide made all efforts to our needs: ( to find lions) he made everything all the time driving, very little stops just to see some footprints.... We saw 9 lions. What I can say it is that with this company won't fail, because you feel since first time you can rely on them, it is very clear. You will be charged a real fair price,( the best) half or 3 times less than others and you are going to receive a great service. So if you want to do Moremi, don't look other and just book with them, you can be totally safe, you are on the right one.

What a privilege to spend time in such a beautiful lodge in a beautiful part of the world. Our guide was knowledgeable and kind, the staff was warm and accommodating, and the animals were close and photogenic. elephants even walked through the lodge driveway while we had tea. I also always felt nothing but safe.

No words can describe how I feel after this experience. It brought healing to my soul in ways I didn't even realise I was in such desperate need of. Absolutely Mind-Blowing! Belmond Eagle Island Lodge is next-level incredible! Stunning suites with jaw-dropping views, right in the middle of the epic Okavango Delta. Watching elephants and bokkies just outside my deck? Pure magic. The staff and guides are the BEST — passionate, fun, and total experts. Game drives and mokoro rides? Unforgettable! Saw lions, elephants, zebras, almost the entire animal kingdom and so many amazing birds. And the food? Out of this world — delicious and served under the stars. The guide OT, what a legend may I add, laid out the stars for us from the southern cross to Orion’s Belt. I’ve seen, learned and experienced so so much in only a few days. This place is pure safari perfection — I’m already dreaming of coming back! Thanks team, you get a million out of 10

Our bodies just came back few days ago but our minds are still on Eagle Island. What a place! It easy to describe to beautiful lodge, the perfectly decorated room, the comfort… but we can’t describe the feelings. I wish everyone to be able to experiment this place. Special thanks to Owen, Gee, Cindy and Chef Patel for taking such a good care of us. Can’t even express our gratitude to Lucas, our guide who went many extra miles to make this stay unforgettable. We just can’t wait to go back!

Can I give more than 5 stars? Eagle Island Lodge was the last place I stayed on my 8 night 1st ever African Safari - 4 locations, 2 nights each. This was the BEST. This place has it all...amazing location (with fantastic views from all areas of the Lodge), food, service, game drives, rooms (loved my own plunge pool on my deck), cute gift shop...absolutely amazing and luxurious. The rooms were very spacious, indoor and outdoor showers, beautifully done. I will definitely be back. I believe visiting in April allowed us to get closer to wildlife on game drives than if we visited during the rainy season and traveled some by boat. I saw more wildlife in this location than I did in the other 3 locations. I truly wish I had more time here!

A Truly Unforgettable Five-Star Safari Experience – Eagle Island Lodge From the moment we arrived at Eagle Island Lodge, we knew we were in for something extraordinary — but what we experienced far exceeded our expectations. Nestled in the heart of the magical Okavango Delta, this five-star lodge offers the perfect balance between luxury, adventure, and untouched natural beauty. Our stay was nothing short of spectacular. The lodge itself is elegantly designed, effortlessly blending into its environment while still delivering every comfort and indulgence imaginable. From the warm welcome to the impeccable service, every detail was thoughtfully taken care of. What made our trip truly memorable were the exciting activities and immersive experiences. From mokoro (canoe) rides along the glistening delta channels to thrilling game drives, each moment brought us closer to Africa’s heartbeat. We were fortunate to witness elephants bathing, hippos grunting in the waterways, and even a pride of lions relaxing in the golden afternoon light — experiences that will stay with us forever. Every day felt like a new chapter in a grand adventure, yet also a chance to completely unwind. Sundowners overlooking the water, nights under the stars, and meals that could rival any fine dining establishment — all combined to create an all-round unforgettable escape. What makes Eagle Island Lodge stand out is not just the activities or setting, but the way it captures your soul. The sheer beauty of the environment, the serenity of the delta, and the genuine warmth of the people made this one of the most meaningful travel experiences we’ve ever had. We leave with hearts full of gratitude, minds filled with awe, and already dreaming about when we can return. If you’re looking for a place that redefines luxury in the wild and gives you memories to last a lifetime, Eagle Island Lodge is it. Five stars, all the way. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The trip of a lifetime! We stayed for two nights and found the service to be over the top and all of the staff to be terrific. Our guide "OT"was with us every step of the way and had an uncanny ability to find animals and so many other interesting things for us everywhere that we went. A special shout out goes staff members Rachel, Gatsy and Capt. D as well. The lodge is in a beautiful setting and all of the meals were delicious. Also nice to have the dugout canoe and speedboat experiences there, where you get super up close to wildlife. Recommending to all my close friends now. Belmont does an amazing job in the Delta!

This is my second visit to Eagle Island Lodge, and hopefully not the last. The staff are friendly, well trained and always ready to assist. The luxury tents are beautiful, well equipped and comfortable. A clean cool swimming pool at the tent was very welcome after the game drive. The park was beautiful after the rain. Our guide, Kops, was extremely knowledgeable. We could not have asked for a better guide.

Lovely place for eating or just have a coffee or something like that. One of the best places to have a good breakfast with excellent bread... Very special architecture with some little craft shops. A good example that Maun is more than a airport or a springboard to the Okavango Delta... Definitely recommended.

Kay was an amazing help in booking our Botswana trip. She managed to get us all the campsites we were looking for with one week's notice! Ihaha, Savuti (although we decided not to go through Savuti in the end), Magotho, Moremi and Maun. She even came back to us during the course of our trip with new reservations when better sites became available! She is very responsive and such a pleasure to deal with. All that at such a reasonable once off rate! We have always heard that one must book a year in advance and that some companies are very unresponsive and create double bookings etc. Well, Kay managed to work magic during peak season. We will always use her services for future bookings. Highly recommended.

The Duck Café, located just outside the airport in Maun, offers a diverse menu featuring the best coffee in town, fresh juices, and a range of brunch and lunch options to suit all tastes. The café also features an artistic interior design and a gift store with lovely souvenirs for sale.
It is a very lovely place. Food is very good and extremely close to the airport.

The food in this restaurant is not bad but it is way overpriced for the amount of food provided. My USD 9 smoked salmon scramble was really tiny, the size of a finger sandwich. Location is convenient because it is across the street from the Maun Airport. We grabbed breakfast before our 9:30 am flight. However, if you have time and willing to walk, there are couple restaurants nearby with more reasonable prices and taste just as good or better.

the Duck is a great spot right outside of the airport! the food is great and drinks as well. however, one of the servers was rude to a member of our party, which dampened our experience. overall, a nice stop.

A good watering hole adjacent to Maun International AirPort. Balanced between rusticity and romanticism, for visitors from all walks of life. The waiters are attentive, the food dependant on business is served in a timely manner. An in-house memorabilia seller adds to the local safari delta vibe. Worth the visit.

My friends and I found this spot a block away from the airport behind the bush shop building. Its the Perfect spot to kill time before your flight. (The airport is super small!). The proprietor, Marc, personally ensures that all guests are well taken care of and provides excellent service. Absolutely brilliant! Marc’s Eatery is hands down the best spot in Maun. The food is incredible – everything is homemade, bursting with flavour, and cooked to absolute perfection. I honestly couldn’t recommend a better place to eat, relax, and just vibe. The whole place has this artsy, cozy, feel-at-home atmosphere that makes you never want to leave. And the garden? Mind-blowing. The decor alone is worth the visit. And don’t even get me started on the coffee… one sip and I was back in Italy. Can’t wait to go back every time!

This is a must try restaurant when you are visiting Maun. We went there tonight for dinner. The semi outdoor seating was very relaxing and comfortable. The special menu has many interesting dishes. We picked the warthog stew and kudu stew, both were delicious and no gamey taste, went very well with the pap. The owner came by our table and chatted with us. We got to the restaurant early so there were plenty of tables, but by the time we left around 6:45, it was full.

It was recommended by our hotel, and we’re glad we followed their recommendation as it was a good meal, in a lovely garden location just off the main road.
