El Jadida in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in El Jadida, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
El Jadida is a coastal city known for its well-preserved Portuguese fortified town, a UNESCO World Heritage site with imposing ramparts and the atmospheric Portuguese Cistern. Visitors can stroll along sandy Atlantic beaches, explore the old medina, and walk the sea-facing walls for wide ocean views. The city offers a slower, less crowded alternative to Morocco’s larger hubs while still providing cafes, markets, and easy day-trip access from Casablanca.
With favorites like Plage El Haouzia, علي بابا, and Riad caliptus Vue Mer, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Riad caliptus Vue Mer and L'Araucaria so you can get the best taste of El Jadida while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Heritage building
La Citerne Portugaise, located in El Jadida, Morocco, is a historical site that lies beneath the Portuguese city of Mazagan. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a must-visit when traveling to El Jadida. The cistern is an atmospheric vaulted storage space and offers a glimpse into the area's rich history. While it may need some maintenance and restoration work, it remains a significant part of the local spirit.
It's still closed even if Google mentions the opposite but it's false.. you can take a walk around on the port it's also nice & worth the visit too
Pi K — Google review
Closed, outside looks like magnificent and magical building
Kamil N — Google review
Unfortunately the main cisterne is still closed… going on its third year or so. Its a shame for a UNESCO site to not fix these places. The outside is in OK condition and worth a visit, but I would have liked to see the inside. Three stars since it was closed 😧
Trond S — Google review
We visited this place while we were in El Jadid, Marocco (August, 2022). The attraction was close while we were there. If you free time, you may visit this place. It is near the city center. The historical monuments have great building, but they need to do maintenance.
Rita — Google review
Quiet and nice town to visit, but not a lot to do except this site. The site maintains quite well, u can spend time to.walk around and then go to the beach side for another walk. Good place to spend a day enjoying local atmosphere.
Anthony S — Google review
Very cool fort, the different canons show the progression of the Portuguese invasion of the Moroccan coasts
A-noir — Google review
The tickets are kind of expensive, 70 Dh for a basement. We thought we could get up to the roof and upstairs or exterior part, but nothing else. No more than 15 minutes, you will be out of this place. I wouldn’t have gone there if it was not a world heritage.
Sandy W — Google review
This is one of the UNESCO sites in El Jadida, Morocco. The Portuguese Citerne is an old storage that lies underneath Portuguese city of Mazagan which in current times known as El Jedida. I travelled to El Jedida via train from Casablanca and it took me around 3 hours to reach this place. In addition to Casablanca, Marakkash, and Rabat, El Jedida is a must visit place and the La Citerne Portugaise is a must see.

The Théâtre Mohamed Afifi is located in a charming square, offering opportunities for leisurely picnics and strolling. The interior boasts a stunning design, complemented by an impressive symphony orchestra and an array of captivating musical performances. Unfortunately, the theater suffers from unruly crowds who litter the space with food remnants, tarnishing its once beautiful ambiance. Nonetheless, the theater's architecture remains remarkable and creates a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
It is very nice and has a beautiful view.
Fakhreddine H — Google review
The theatre has an ancient history in the city and we love to preserve it and use it in what helps and highlights the city’s culture.
Amsed A — Google review
A small useless theater. I have spent 3 years in this city and unfortunately, this place is only crowded on the outside. The 1 star isn't for the theater, but for the organization, the planning and for the poor cultural presence in El Jadida.

Mohammed V Park in El Jadida is a popular green space featuring a variety of plants and intriguing statues. It's a favorite hangout for locals, offering a peaceful atmosphere amidst the city's liveliness. Visitors can enjoy the sea breeze while sipping tea or coffee, making it an ideal spot to start the day or spend an evening. The park boasts exotic trees with a long history, creating a calm and quiet ambiance.
Nice beach side park with lots of shade trees and interesting sculptures. Good place to have a picnic if you don't want sand in your food.

A-noir — Google review
It's amazing to see a very nice green space, but it's a shame to see that green space polluted with trash and irresponsible people on motorbikes or with trash all over the place. This city has nice potentials but the people and the authorities are quiet. Please take care of this garden and keep it clean.
Achraf D — Google review
Good place, but it's kind of polluted since it's in the heart of the city.
Erik B — Google review
Trash everywhere, exotic place but Jdidis are not paying any attention to the historic beauty they have, no trash cans in the whole El jadida by the beaches or in the parcs, it's a mystery of modern day wonders. Jdidis have beautiful city but they are making one huge trash can!! Shame

Parc Hassan II is not only a park but also a meticulously maintained garden situated just a short 5-minute stroll away from the beach. This serene location attracts many students who come here to study due to its tranquil and calming ambiance. Unlike other parks in El Jadida, Parc Hassan II offers a remarkably peaceful atmosphere, complemented by picturesque viewpoints that provide ample opportunities for capturing beautiful photographs.

English review: this park has potential, but there's abandoned buildings, trash, broken play ground equipment, and the usual park security guard blowing his fruity whistle because he wants to exercise some kind of power over kids playing on this park's dangerous equipment. Stick your whistle in your pocket, I'm trying to relax. El Jadida is a dump with potential but the problem with potential is you need money to realize potential. I was not at all impressed with Morocco and will never visit again. El Jadida was our biggest disappointment out of the 4 cities we saw👎🇲🇦👎

A vast flee market where you can buy used items, furniture, bikes and with a section for vegetables and fruits. Be careful though, sometimes people could be hostile there or you could lose your phone if you keep it in your back pocket

Sidi Bouafi Lighthouse

Historical landmark
The striking Sidi Bou Afi Lighthouse, situated by the coastline, is a remarkable historical site. Although not accessible to the public, its exterior is worth admiring due to its white grandeur. Fascinatingly, this lighthouse was constructed by German prisoners of war during World War One and takes its name from a local saint. Standing tall and still functioning today, it may be possible to catch a glimpse inside if the caretaker is present.
The lighthouse wasn't open but I am glad that I visited it. It is a massive very impressive structure which looks newly painted and as such is a treasure of the city. It is not surrounded by a slum but by an older neighbourhood and some very interesting streets. Would love to climb to the top!
Kevin C — Google review

The Riad Caliptus Vue Mer is a hidden gem in the old Portuguese town, offering an amazing seafood platter and stunning sunset views. There are no menus, but the owner organizes the food seamlessly. The place is not easy to find as there are no signs outside, adding to its charm. This restaurant is known for its delicious Moroccan tea and "msamen," served with a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean.
I ordered something to drink. The staff was really nice, the drink was delicious and the atmosphere was really nice. It’s a bit sad to look out of the window and seeing the other poor houses, but the view from upstairs was really nice! The toilets were really clean honestly. But I didn’t visit the rooms (if they have one. It just says in the star review). But still, I highly recommend this little café.

Nice view and decoration but service and the products are not the greatest ( no paper toilet in the washroom) we order lemon jus that supposed to have mint and ginger it was only lemon and water event sugar barely any!!! Maybe try it for the view but don’t expect much 😅😔

Café L'Araucaria in El-Jadida is highly recommended for its excellent breakfast. Patrons frequently return to enjoy the best breakfast in town. The café stands out for its cleanliness and peaceful atmosphere. The accommodating and amiable staff provide assistance with a friendly demeanor. Restaurant
Le Privé Restaurant in El Jadida is a fantastic dining establishment, with Patrick as an outstanding host. The food, wine, and atmosphere are truly excellent. Patrick's jovial nature enhances the overall enjoyment. There was also delightful live music by a band named NCZ, featuring guitars and percussion instruments. The appetizers were exquisite and the fish dish that followed was impeccable. It's no surprise that this restaurant is considered the best in El Jadida.
Very friendly owner and pleasant atmosphere. We had the most amazing dinner there. We were also surprised to find good wine selection in El Jadida.

You have to take the name of this lounge bar literally , it a very relaxing atmosphere. If you like a good glass of wine combined by an amuse or tapa and you love an excellent service, you are here at your place. The dishes you can eat here are special for Moroccan standards, but not for free ...

An excellent evening. Patrick is an amazing host and the food, wine and ambiance was really tops. His humourous demeanour adds to the pleasure. Had some wonderful live music with guitars and little rhythmic drums.. NCZ they called themselves.. Both starters were to die for and the fish that followed was perfect. No wonder this is the number one place in El Jadida. Nothing flashy. Small. Cozy. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

I don't know if it's me or that calamari I ate. I ate calamari the day before at another location and was perfectly fine. This time I had a reaction which made my throat pull close, my breathing almost stop....yes typical of an allergic reaction. But I can't say....so take this with a pinch of salt. The staff however helped us get back to our Riad as fast as possible so I could take the necessary medication. So very grateful for that.

Although i appriciate the staff who were really tring their best, I have to rate just one star as the food was really bad. Shrimps - very sweet sauce but otherwise ok Octopus - very tough meat, not done properly. We could not even eat half of it Beef Cotlette - did not taste right, we had a feeling that the meat was old and honestly seems like the case we just barely tasted it and had stomach issues after It is priced premium but you will do better if you will go for the cheaper local cusine

(Translated by Google) I don't understand the review that says this beach is "quiet". It is anything but that. The shipwreck makes this beach special. Nevertheless, the waves are very strong and keep pulling you in the direction of the wreck. The lifeguards are constantly whistling people away from the wreck in the other direction. I would rather go swimming with my children at the beach of Sidi Bouzid (15km away) as that is too dangerous for me. Residents say there is a whirlpool near the wreck, which is why people are said to have been drawn there. Particular caution is required.

(Translated by Google) Al-Houzia Beach is one of the most beautiful Moroccan beaches, as it is located in the El Jadida province between the cities of El Jadida and Azemmour. The beach is characterized by its soft golden sand and clear blue waters, making it an attractive destination for tourists. In addition to the sand, the beach has areas of small and medium-sized pebbles, which adds variety to its nature and makes it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sunshine and stunning scenery. Flea & Street Markets
Marché Central السوق المركزي is a former European-style market that has transformed into a popular spot known for its fishmongers and traditional restaurants specializing in cooking fish on-site. It's recommended for those seeking fresh seafood of good quality, although it's worth noting that there are many cats around the area. The market is great for purchasing fish at prices not commonly found in France.
Finding myself in El Jadida with time to spare, I decided to venture to the central marketplace to view the local selection. The market generally certainly isn't the grandest I've been to, with a greater selection of alcohol on sale than fresh fruit and vegetable purveyors. The busiest section of the market was dedicated to fresh fish, with several stalls selling a local selection and a restaurant grilling and frying. I started by purchasing a medley of figs, ubiquitous sold across the city, as well as a bream and several large shrimps. Of all the seafood markets I visited in Morocco, El Jadida's was considerably the cheapest. At the restaurant, my figs were washed and placed in a fridge, and I sat down waiting for my seafood to be grilled over charcoal. Served with a selection of Moroccan salad, lightly pickled chiles and harissa, the seafood was perfectly cooked and very fresh. El Jadida's notoriety for produce was also evident, as all the fruits and vegetables I sampled were of a notably high quality.

Château Rouge is a charming establishment that captures the essence of French hospitality. Nestled in a picturesque location, it offers guests an inviting atmosphere with beautifully designed interiors and cozy accommodations. The on-site dining experience showcases delectable cuisine, highlighting local flavors and seasonal ingredients. Guests can unwind in the serene surroundings or explore nearby attractions, making it an ideal retreat for those seeking both relaxation and adventure.
As others have said this place is locked up but is very interesting. There are many other red buildings in the area and indeed whole neighbourhoods are painted red if you walk along the nearby corniche. Is it to reflect the colour of the Moroccan flag? Is a lovely building though, worth seeing and it got me wondering 🧐

this place is really nice to have a good time at the beach the only downside is security problems and nearby locals conquer public spaces and areas for business and profit
SAID M — Google review
The beach was amazing and slightly crowded but to be expected when the weather is over 100 degrees. People were nice and the water was cold but refreshing. They offer chairs and umbrella for a small fee of 80Dh or 8 US dollars for all day. Only downfall is the people trying to sell food on the beach. They tend to keep asking you till you buy. They also sell you cold water the same way so take the review how you want.

Gorgeous top class beach with none of the glaring trash which is hard to ignore at some other Moroccan beaches. There were no life guards when I visited but everything looked in order! Nice little waves coming in in the centre section and lots of Cafes and restaurants nearby. Beautiful!

Pleasant enough beach which can get a bit crowded in the afternoon when the tide & crowds come in. Mostly clean (by Moroccan standards). Get there using the number 14 bus from town. An umbrella & sun bed cost me 80 Dirham Note - the water is very cold!

A nice beach, where you can be in a Bikini with not a lot of problems, but do get some looks from the neighborhood. Parking to be found near by, a few cafés, WC. You can rent an umbrella and some chairs for a reasonable price (20-80 MAD). You can also by Coffee, water, fruit and some Maroccan snacks from the beach vendors.

The food was good, the service was excelent as was the atmosphere. We shared 3 dishes and it was plenty The salad was very amazing, pasta was good, the mixed grill was ok, i find the meats overall in morocco are overcooked. But its just a style and some people like that.

Restaurant Sham Bacha is a new Syrian cuisine spot located in El Jadida. The dishes are incredibly delicious and the prices are extremely affordable. The service is prompt and attentive, making your dining experience enjoyable. A must-try are their mixed mezze, waraq 3inab, and falafel which are all delectable. This restaurant has gained popularity for its excellent food and presentation. The staff members are professional and friendly, creating a pleasant atmosphere for customers to dine in.
I have been here many times, often with a friend from the States who also loves the food. We've tried different dishes and this time had a 75 Dirham plate of mezze. It was huge and the meal was plenty for two. There were kibbe, falafel, stuffed vine leaves, hummus, two types of Baba ghanouch all served with levantine bread. We also got two salads, one of which was fatoush. It was all perfect. We were happy to see that despite its location in the suburbs, there were other foreigners rating there. Really a good place and I recommend it.

I was warned not to go to this place because this place takes so much time to prepare food for its customers. Unfortunately, it’s true. Restaurant
This luxury establishment, Buddha-Bar Beach Mazagan, offers an opulent and extravagant experience. The staff is exceptionally welcoming, creating a cozy and regal atmosphere. The diligent employees strive to serve and satisfy guests with utmost dedication. The cuisine is exquisite, delivering utterly delicious dishes. The activities provided are highly entertaining. I strongly recommend visiting this place for its great taste in food, excellent service, and breathtaking view.
A very nice place to take friends and family and eat some delicious food or drink cold and refreshing juices. In general, the place is wonderful and I recommend visiting it, but I want to give a simple piece of advice to the restaurant, which is to add a simple touch to create an exceptional atmosphere in the restaurant that is not found anywhere else, such as placing some strange sea trees or antiques that have a different architectural shape and even colors, as they make a person feel that he is in Commercial place. Information about the place from the restaurant’s website: Buddha-Bar Beach Restaurant Experience the serenity of sinking your toes into the golden sands while savoring delectable maki rolls and sushi platters. Let yourself be carried away by the expertly crafted cocktails, while the ocean breeze gently tousles your hair to the rhythmic beats of Buddha-Bar's iconic soundtrack. As the day transitions and the Moroccan sun bathes your private cabana, witness the mesmerizing sunset over the ocean, as the ambiance heightens.
Yassine H — Google review
Buddha Bar offers a unique dining experience with its beachfront location. However, to fully satisfy its customers, the restaurant should consider expanding its vegetarian menu and improving its service standards.
Hardik U — Google review
I hate to leave harsh reviews, but this experience was unacceptable. I had sushi at the Buddha Bar yesterday for lunch and ended up violently ill instantly after. It was clear something wasn’t right with the fish—it didn’t taste fresh, and now I’m paying the price. I’ve never had food poisoning like this before, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Freshness should be the bare minimum for any sushi restaurant especially at a big hotel like the Mazagan. If you can’t guarantee that, you shouldn’t be serving it. Eat here at your own risk. I definitely won’t be back.
Jordana A — Google review
Very basic and even disappointing I’d say. The transats look cheap and you’d see them in municipal swimming pools where the access would be 10 euros. But in Buddha you pay 350 dhs and get that. Really sad atmosphere. Oh and it’s “self-service”: ask for the menu, it never comes, so you have to go take it. You want to make an order ? As well you have to go them. If you charge prices that are rather excessive for the market, provide the services accordingly and invest a little bit on amenities.
B A — Google review
I recently visited the Buddha Bar on July 14, 2023, and unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. From the moment I entered, it became apparent that the lighting was utterly disastrous, both at the entrance and inside the venue. This lack of adequate lighting persisted throughout my visit, making it incredibly difficult to fully appreciate and enjoy the dance performances presented by the talented dancers. It felt as though I was sitting in the midst of darkness, unable to fully immerse myself in the ambiance of the place. Another letdown was the DJ, who failed to meet the expected level of performance. The music lacked energy and failed to create the lively atmosphere that one would hope for in such a renowned establishment. It was disappointing to witness a lackluster performance that didn't live up to the reputation of Buddha Bar. Furthermore, the absence of lighting or even candles on the table was a complete letdown. It was astonishing to find myself sitting in near darkness, struggling to read the menu and appreciate the presentation of the food that was served. This lack of attention to detail and basic amenities detracted significantly from the overall experience. Considering the aforementioned factors, I find it difficult to rate my visit to the Buddha Bar positively. I would give it no more than one star, or perhaps even less. The lack of appropriate lighting, the subpar DJ performance, and the absence of table lighting or candles all contributed to a disappointing and unsatisfactory experience. I sincerely hope that the management takes these concerns into consideration and makes the necessary improvements to ensure a more enjoyable experience for future patrons. Overall, I cannot recommend the Buddha Bar based on my recent visit. It is my hope that the issues mentioned are addressed promptly, allowing the establishment to regain its former charm and provide a truly memorable experience for its guests
Ahmed A — Google review

The Kasbah de Boulaouane is a breathtaking and remarkable destination. Although the journey there may pose some challenges due to poorly maintained roads, it is undeniably worth it. At the entrance, visitors are asked for an entrance fee of 40dhm, and even if one only has 20dhm, the attendant gladly accepts it.
Such an incredible place. There is a very nice hotel you can stay in if you want to stay overnight. I did some astro photography and it was magical! Really enjoyed visiting and seeing such an ancient place

Beautiful spot. The road is currently under construction but still accessible by car. It will take you up to ~20 minutes with low speed to reach the castle. There will be a local asking for a small fee, about 30/40 dirham per person. He can also help you for a small guidance in the castle.
Bastiaan N — Google review
This is a hard destination to get to but utterly worth it. About 20 kilometres from the kasbah turning off the El Jadida to Settat road, the way gets progressively more difficult culminating in a six kilometer, bone shaking ride along a potholed and single track road. But it's worth it. Rounding a corner, the kasbah comes into view and it's a magnificent sight. Getting nearby, it's clear that there have been some pretty extensive restoration works done on the front walls and also on structures inside. The bowab asks for 20 dirhams per person. This is unofficial, of course, as entry is free in reality. He's actually quite useful as he can point out features not obvious to a casual visitor. We spent a couple of hours here and we were glad to have taken the long journey down from El Jadida.

Hidden gem the ruins were a little bit of a drive and the roads varied in conditions as we went . I am glad we decided to stop in. The ruins were very beautiful and quite interesting to walk through. We had the place to ourselves the entire time we were there. The guard at the door was very helpful and nice. If you like history and ruins of old castles and keeps, this is a must see .

Stunning place. The drive up there is a bit precarious on very potholed roads but worth it. A guy at the entrance asks for 40dhm entrance fee. I only had 20 in my pocket which he took happily. I had the place to myself. It's beautiful and peaceful and the snaking rivers form a wonderful backdrop. It was built in 1710 by the Alaouite Sultan Moulay Ismail to contain the areas controlled by the Portuguese

A wonderful piece of history from the 16th century. Free to enter but worth giving the old guy at the gate a few Durhams just to show you around. The views of the river, Orangeries and local villages all around are superb. The roads to get there are full of holes and just dirt in places but still easily accessible by car, (probably difficult after rain). Just drive carefully for the last few km.

This idyllic swimming facility boasts a serene atmosphere and offers an exceptional shoreline for sunbathing and water activities.

The Espace de la Mémoire Historique de la Résistance & de la Libération in El Jadida is a captivating museum that immerses visitors in Morocco's rich historical tapestry, particularly during the tumultuous times of the World Wars. It offers a profound exploration of Morocco's role in these global conflicts and its complex relationship with France throughout the colonial era.
A very insightful and rich informations about Moroccan history, starting the french protectorate to the after exile of king Mohammed V, also how much morocco was involved in both world wars. this will change the perspective of your view towards colonial countries because of how much they drained Landowners. in short a lot of untold history through educational books, specially for the current gen. the building is not in a great state tho, it could be cleaner but sadly not crowded even in summer.
Moghwan — Google review
A very nice place for Moroccans especially. Everything is in Arabic/French, so if you can't read those languages, you'll lack context of what you're looking at. It IS free but there's a guy there who, in exchange for a tip (20dh or so), will act as your guide and explain things to you.
Imrane Z — Google review
Wasn't able to access the museum, but I know the importance of this building to the Moroccan people and that it serves as a symbol of their resilience.
Kevin C — Google review
Not free!!! Was forced to give money, and when gave 20 dirhams the guy wasn't happy and was asking for more. Wouldn't let me out, had to barge past him to leave... wouldn't recommend!!!
Lucy B — Google review
A small facility but worth a stop if you are here and like old photographs. One room is totally about Moroccan soldiers in the French army during World War I and World War II. Lots of good photos there. The descriptions are only in Arabic and French but I was able to use Google Lens to translate the French to English. You could also do a web search for Wikipedia articles on Morocco in World War I and II and get some general background. The museum is free.

Housed within an elegant old building, the "Espace de la Memoire Historique de la Resistance et de la Liberation". This beautiful building displays various weapons and other wartime objects, letters and other documents, and emotive photographs from times gone by. Learn more about Morocco’s role in the First and Second World Wars and the effects the wars had on the nation. Discover more about the area’s colonial heritage. Find out about Morocco’s relations with France over the years. Gain greater understanding of the country’s fight for independence. Learn about the Resistance movement in Morocco.

The well-known and established fast-food franchise, McDonald's in El Jadida, is renowned for its delectable burgers and fries. During the summer season, this eatery tends to be bustling with a large crowd. However, if you desire a more serene dining experience, it would be advisable to order your meal for takeout. By opting for this convenient option, you can sidestep the masses and relish your food in a relaxed and comfortable ambiance.
This McDonald has super beautiful view! The taste is good not busy. Really recommend

They definitely don't have a lot of the same food as we do in America, but the taste is still good. I don't know what kinda fries I ordered, but that was good too, so I can't complain. They don't know much English so keep it simple or just order at the kiosk. Overall, it wasn't bad.

Made me wait 40minutes before getting food even though i went to them twice and asked why it took so long for the food. Otherwise looks nice but really bad service

When you have kids in the car a McD is always a welcoming sight. Personally I love Moroccan traditional food, but my youngest daughter not so much. This McD secured her a good meal and the personnel was kind and patient to let her order herself. Location is prime, just by the beach. Nice roof terrace to enjoy the sun and the food.

It's ok, just McDonalds. Service a bit slow, we had our meal when was quiet in the restaurant, but still 15-20 minutes waiting for food.

first of all, the prices are a bit expensive, the service is very bad, even if the view is good, next to the beach and that stuff, but the workers are very bad, i mean they are kinda toxic,.
