The Church of St. George is a remarkable rock-hewn church located in Lalibela, Ethiopia. It is part of a group of churches connected by underground passageways and surrounded by a deep trench. Lalibela itself is considered one of the holiest cities in Ethiopia and was designed to be a New Jerusalem after the capture of Jerusalem in 1187. The Church of St.
Saint George Church is truly the highlight of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, and seeing it in person was just awe-inspiring. The way it’s carved perfectly into the rock in the shape of a cross is almost hard to believe. I was lucky to visit when it wasn’t too crowded, which made the experience even more special—calm, peaceful, and almost surreal ⛪️ it’s so much worth a visit!

Stunning. The most iconic of the Lalībela churches. I was fortunate enough to be here for a Sunday morning service which was amazing to experience. As a bonus there were fewer people asking for food or money compared to the day before.

The Extraordinary St. George Church in Lalibela Visiting the remarkable St. George Church in Lalibela was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Carved entirely out of a single rock in the shape of a cross, the church stands as a breathtaking testament to ancient craftsmanship, faith, and Ethiopian heritage. Its serene atmosphere and spiritual significance left us in awe.

🚨BE WARY of those Ethiopians on the hill top with a hut, next to St George. They tried to ask my friends pay for camera fee, which was already paid when we bought the entrance ticket. Bloody greedy people. Make sure your ticket indicates camera fee has been paid if you are bringing a camera (mobile phone camera not required to be paid) Otherwise this church is the most popular of all churches as it is really pretty! It's a small climb to enter and exit the church.

The most unusual of the eleven Rock-Hewn churches in Lalibela. A stunning church including the surrounding space that was carved downwards from volcanic rock. Need to see to appreciate this amazing architecture. The Church of St. George was constructed under the reign of King Lalibela in the 12th century. Must see

One of the most stunning places, I was blessed to visit. The rich History, the people, the inside sacred worshipping areas were something that one can only feel. The Priests are kind, the people are kind. This should be one of the wanders pf the world.
Maryam N — Google review
Truly one of my favorite church among eleven . Still my mind can’t believe that it was a solid rock and just a few centuries ago , people of Ethiopia cut off the rock a full size church . Unbelievable!! Don’t be lazy and visit a town of Lalibela and its mind blowing churches . But the way a ticket cost is two thousand five hundred birr and it valid for five days . Basically you have a five full days to enjoy and dive into unique Ethiopian culture . Here is a two big celebrations in Lalibela during a year , first is Fasika (Easter) and another one Christmas 🎄
Vasyalifestyle — Google review
The most visually impressive of the Lalibela churches from the outside, due to its Greek cross form. Inside there is not much to see in this small structure. The approach, through a narrow trench, is unique. The symbolism of the church built to illustrate Noah's Ark is seen from the outside. As an added bonus, wildlife can be spotted here, such as monkeys, vultures, lizards, and eagles.

Lalibela is home to a remarkable collection of 11 rock-hewn churches, dating back to the 13th century. These churches are adorned with intricate frescoes and are believed to have been built with the help of angels. The complex labyrinth of tunnels and narrow passages connecting the churches adds to their mystique. Visitors can witness unique religious structures almost hidden in deep trenches or standing in open quarried caves.
Amazing and interesting facts we learn from our guide . Now I know everything in Ethiopia has a meaning related to religion . Even we go at sunrise to the church with locals which are celebrating St.George day. Lalibela is magic . Worth it every penny to go and visit that special place especially for Ethiopians .

Beautiful place. The ticket price is $100 per person. I think it's too much. Before entering there, everyone recommended us a guide of 20 dollars per person but eventually we went alone and found the guide inside for 700 bir per person. We saw all the churches in one day. I recommend :)
Ewelina K — Google review
The entrance price went up to $100 in August 2024 and if you’re not on an organized tour expect to pay another $30 per day for a guide and then be prepared to have scores of people offer to ‘help’ or watch your flip flops when you have to leave them or just plain ask for money. It ruins the experience somewhat but Lalibela is special. Can’t help but wonder at the precision and craftsmanship of each of the rock hewn churches. I could have spent a few days exploring here but best seen during a Sunday service or a pilgrimage.

Rock hewin churches of Lalibela is found the Eastern part of Amhara region. Lalibela was the political center of for along time and built by the Zagwe dynasty called kink Lalibela. Lalibela consists 11th rock hewin churches which are built from a single rock individually. The annual celebration of Lalibela is on December 21.

World heritage site so worth a visit to be sure. Internal conflicts in Northern Ethiopia have decimated the tourism industry here which means there are no visitors and the economy is suffering. That also means that there are no crowds!! (When I went 12/2023 - there had been no violence for 4 months. Please check before you go to make sure it is still safe.) The churches are beautiful and the people lovely. Tickets are 100$ and my guide was 30$/day.
Richard B — Google review
Despite the awe-inspiring nature of the Rock-Hewn Churches in Lalibela, which is considered one of the six wonders of the world, I must express my deep disappointment with my personal experience there. As an Ethiopian myself, it was disheartening to encounter such unprofessional and concerning behavior from the local guides. I strongly believe that both the local and federal government should collaborate to establish a transparent and standardized pricing system, clearly displayed in front of each hotel in the vicinity of this area. It is disheartening to witness individuals who should be ambassadors of their heritage instead exhibiting cunning, calculated, and overall disappointing conduct.
Siye K — Google review
A wonderful experience!! It was my second time in Ethiopia and first time at Lalibelas rock hewn churches . A ticket cost is two thousand five hundred birr , and valid for 5 days . And I was lucky enough to attend a priest and monks service on Easter eve !!! It’s happening only once an a year so guys don’t miss this celebration of Easter or it’s can be also epic celebration during Ethiopian Christmas time . The vibe is awesome , and it unique in the same time only in Ethiopia.
Vasyalifestyle — Google review
🚨BE WARY OF THE PEOPLE THERE! There will be corrupted guides or greedy locals who ask you to pay for your camera (mobile camera not included). Ensure you pay the camera fee (300 Birr) at the entrance and have it WRITTEN 📝 on your entrance ticket, which is valid for 5 days This place is nice and wonderful. A great sight. However, 99% of the people there are not good. They appear friendly but it all comes at a cost. They'll ask for money in the end. Be on your guard when you visit. Entry ticket costs 50 USD. If you paying Birr, they'll calculate by 50 USD multiplied by the current USD to Birr exchange rate.

Dan Lalibela Tour Guide Services

4.9

Tour operator
Dan Lalibela Tour Guide Services offers an unforgettable experience for visitors to the holy site of Lalibela in northern Ethiopia. With a deep knowledge of the area's history and personal connections to the region, Dan provides insightful tours of the Rock-Hewn Churches, including secret cave and tunnel entrances. Whether it's a one-day walking tour or a comprehensive 9-day trip through Northern Ethiopia, Dan ensures punctuality and adherence to agreed schedules while facilitating unique experiences such as attending Sunday services at St.
I almost never write reviews, but for all the work Daniel has done, this is the least I can do for him. When I was choosing Ethiopia, I found quite a few travel agencies to whom I wrote a list of places I wanted to visit. And Daniel was the only one who described in great detail all the places to visit and why they should be visited; approached our desires individually; did not offer trivial tourist routes; and told us about some subtleties that no one else told us about. Daniel completely freed us from any worries about moving around the country, always controlled the situation and resolved any difficulties that arose or our desires. For our trip, Daniel selected an incredible team, to whom we are also very grateful. In each region, we were met by local guides who provided us with a sense of safety, knew everything and organized colorful routes for us, thanks to which we were able to see the unique beauty of Ethiopia. In each tribe we were met by a local guide who knew everyone there, which allowed us to delve into the life and culture of the tribes. One of the main desires was to attend the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, and Daniel advised us to celebrate this holiday not in the capital, but in Lalibela. And we believe that his suggestion was 100% correct. The spectacle was very impressive, we are very glad that we were able to be here. He knew the best places to stand to really enjoy the festival in honor of the holiday, and also personally conducted 2 days of excursions to the temples of the city, told in detail and showed unique places. Thanks to Daniel, we traveled all over Ethiopia (Turmi, Jinka, Abra Minch, Lalibela, Addis-Ababa, Danakil Depression and Simien Mountains), visited the most amazing and unique places on the planet, saw things we couldn't even dream of, lived in the most beautiful places, experienced a whole kaleidoscope of emotions and received an incredible number of the warmest and most unforgettable emotions and impressions. Because of this, we fell in love with Africa and now dream of visiting more than one country. The only thing I regret is that Daniel only works in Ethiopia.

My friend and I travelled with Dan and the team across Lalibela, Semera and Danakil Depression (5 days 4 nights) Places we visited were amazing (and safe!) everything was very punctual with no inconvenience at all and good value for money. Dan is a very experience, reliable and trustable tour operator able to accommodate all the needs of his tourists before and during the stay. I would definitely recommend him for any trip in Ethiopia and won't hesitate reaching out to him again in the future.

Daniel was an amazing guide! So knowledgeable about Lalibela, the churches, and Ethiopia. He explained everything to me clearly and answered all my questions with such patience. He was also incredibly flexible, making sure I could manage my work obligations in Australia during the trip. Even when I was running late, he remained patient and understanding. One of the highlights of my visit was having a traditional Ethiopian lunch and coffee at Daniel’s beautiful home with his wonderful family. His wife was incredibly hospitable and an amazing cook, it was such a warm and memorable experience that added so much to the trip. Thank you so much for a trip of a lifetime. Lalibela is truly glorious, so beautiful and fascinating. The architecture, history, and symbolism of the churches are absolutely incredible. Thank you very much, Daniel. I can’t wait to return with my family so they can share in this unforgettable experience.
Sarrah O — Google review
We were incredibly pleased with the care and dedication we received from Daniel during our trip to Ethiopia. Despite several unexpected challenges—like our lost luggage with Turkish Airlines—Daniel swiftly used his extensive connections to ensure our bags were delivered to us as soon as possible. When we missed our flight to the Omo Valley, Daniel completely rearranged our itinerary, making sure we didn’t miss out on the experience. Since flights to the Omo Valley only run every two days, he quickly organized an alternative plan, ensuring that even after arriving at a different destination, we were able to visit six tribes, including witnessing the unforgettable bull-jumping ceremony, all within two days. Arriving in Addis Ababa much earlier than expected due to flight changes, Daniel once again stepped up, arranging a knowledgeable driver and guide to show us around the city, turning an inconvenience into an opportunity to explore. A great tour operator isn’t just about planning an itinerary—it’s about being ready to handle the unexpected, and Daniel excelled in every way. His attentiveness, resourcefulness, and warm hospitality made our trip truly special. And to top it all off, his wonderful wife welcomed us into their home for a delicious Ethiopian dinner with honey wine, giving us a true taste of the country’s hospitality. We highly recommend Daniel to anyone traveling to Ethiopia—his professionalism, connections, and kindness ensured an unforgettable journey!

We booked an 8 day tour with Daniel which was great! We spent two days in Lalibela and he showed us round the churches and took us up to the monastery, he also had us at his home for lunch - Daniel is from Lalibela and has spent a lot of time at the churches so knows a huge amount about them and can you show you lots of different parts that others may not know about. He also took us for drinks on our last day in Lalibela! He then booked us on to a 3 day tour of the Danakil Depression - although this is where we parted ways he continually checked on us to make sure we were okay during the danakil tour! The tour he booked us on to was extremely well planned and amazing to see! He then arranged for us to visit the Tigray region - everything was seamless, he planned all the drivers and accommodation and was flexible to our needs when we had already booked accommodation in certain places. Long after the tour with Daniel ended we needed help contacting a hotel as we didn’t have the ability to make calls to Ethiopian numbers - I messaged Daniel on the off chance he could call for us and he sorted everything out for us and then called us to make sure everything went okay! It was great booking with Daniel and we always felt safe and assured that everything would go to plan!

My recent trip to Ethiopia was nothing short of extraordinary, filled with breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. This trip was planned seamlessly and hassle free by Dan Lalibella Tours! From the bustling streets of Addis Ababa to the awe-inspiring rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, each destination left a lasting impression on me. Addis Ababa city is alive with energy, and I felt safe and secure throughout my stay, thanks to the meticulous planning of my itinerary. The attention to detail was remarkable, ensuring that I could fully immerse myself in the local culture without any worries. Traveling to Lalibela was a highlight of my journey. The iconic churches carved into the rock are a testament to Ethiopia's rich Christian heritage and left me in awe. Bahir Dar added to my adventure with its stunning views of Lake Tana and the majestic Blue Nile Falls. Gondar’s castles transported me back in time, showcasing the grandeur of Ethiopia’s past. One of the most memorable experiences was visiting Abune Yemata, where the breathtaking views and the incredible church perched high on the cliff truly took my breath away. Mekele was equally captivating, with its unique landscapes and welcoming atmosphere. A special shoutout to Dan, who made my experience even more special by inviting me into his home for a genuine Ethiopian lunch. Dan's hospitality and tireless efforts to ensure my comfort were exceptional. He went above and beyond, adjusting plans to suit my preferences and putting my mind at ease throughout the journey. It was a privilege to share a meal and learn from him about the local culture and traditions. As I reflect on this amazing trip, I know that I will return to Ethiopia, and specifically to Danikal Depression, with Dan by my side. This adventure was not only about the sights but also about the connections made and the warmth of the Ethiopian people. Hats off to everyone who made this experience unforgettable!

Church
Bete Medhane Alem, the largest monolithic church in the world, is a must-visit when exploring Lalibela. This architectural marvel greets visitors right at the entrance and ticket office, making it an ideal starting point for your journey. Surrounded by 37 impressive colonnades—some of which have crumbled but were restored in 1954—the church's design echoes that of the ancient Aksum Cathedral, a significant site in Ethiopia’s Christian history.
Excellent to go at 8am because it is empty. Alternatively Sunday it is packed with locals in beautiful church clothes. If you arrive at 2pm you will have toke to see everything but closes sharply at 5pm no exceptions. Be mindful in Christendom this is one of the holiest places far more Holy than many things in Rome says a Catholic!

Fantastic structure, it was the first stop in our visit to Lalibela and its gigantic walls and columns caused a memorable and possitive impression. The light is beautiful in the afternoon, making the stone change colors as the sun changes position.

The first and largest church on the tour. There is a fantastic 7 kg solid gold cross that is rarely brought out, it was stolen once. There are also the 'graves' of the patriarchs. Abraham, Jacob and Joseph. You can ask about how you can test whether you are with sin or not.

Ben Abeba is a renowned restaurant in Lalibela, Ethiopia, known for its excellent Shepherds Pie and unique Ethio-Scottish-owned, Dali-esque architecture. The restaurant offers 360-degree views from its perch on the edge of the ridge and has been widely covered in publications like The New York Times and Selamta. Visitors can enjoy the eccentric building and panoramic views while dining at this one-of-a-kind establishment.
So we only ate at the restaurant and did not stay at the hotel just to clarify. The food was exquisite, the service was Immaculate and the timing of our meal was everything. We arrived before sunset and were able to see the most breathtaking sunset I've ever seen. The food is diverse and includes Ethiopian favorites alongside some international cuisine. Make sure to try the crepes with banana and honey. Simply to die for. When you're in Lalibela, be certain to dine at this location even if you choose not to stay at the hotel.

Confirmed: they are open now! (It was closed in covid times) The place is awesome and I can say it is an must visit restaurant if you stay in lalilbela. Tip: Bring a jacket if you dining outdoor The food was good and I recommend shepherd pie. The owner of the restaurant was super friendly. He invited us to join the camp fire after dinner and showed us around.

My review of today visit. October 2020 Restaurant reopened, and I was the first foreign guest since the beginning of the pandemic. First of all, the view and the design of the place are superb. The most beautiful Ethiopian sunset that I seen so far. The place is on the outskirts of the village, the food tasty. The main road in the region is mostly under construction, so a local transport is desirable. :)
VIO C — Google review
Such a great place to visit during the sunset. Our guide made a reservation so we got a table just by the balcony. It gets busy but well worth it. The food is great, a fusion between African and western cuisine. It does get cold since it’s on the edge cliff so bring warm clothes however the restaurant provided us with blankets also.
J.M.G — Google review
Incredible architecture and views from this restaurant (sadly you cannot see the churches from here though). The Scottish owner, Susan, is also lovely to talk to and service is good - our lunch was very slow due to a number of tour groups being there. Because the churches are closed between 12 and 2pm I suspect the restaurant is always busy at these times. Fresh juice was delicious. Also it is reassuring that they use boiled water to wash their vegetables. The food was all right but go for the views and the experience.
V C — Google review
Absolutely a great place whether you come here for the panoramic view, food, architectural playfulness of the restaurant itself or a stroll. It gets busy towards sunset, but you will get your food/drink. An excellent spot for reading a book quietly in the morning or admiring the view in solitude.

This restaurant isn’t the most popular in town for no reason. The food is great—don’t miss the Ethiopian Shepherds Pie for sure—but you’ll stick around for the atmosphere. Susan, the Scottish proprietor, is lovely to chat with. Overall a great experience each of the three times we are here. Note that service is slow when they are just opening for breakfast or when they are slammed at peak meal times.

Yemrehana Krestos Church, a stunning example of late-Aksumite architecture, is a hidden gem in Ethiopia that deserves more visitors. Unlike the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, this remarkable structure was built rather than excavated, showcasing an impressive facade made from alternating layers of wood and stone. Dating back nearly 1,000 years and possibly predating Lalibela's churches by up to 80 years, it serves as a fascinating blueprint for architectural excellence.
This cave church built before 1000 years ago by King Yemrehane with marvilous architecture concept.you want to see place get ready for almost 2km stair to walk until the cave entrance. After you visit the church you should try the local food callef"dikus" made of hot pepper.

Yimrehana krestos church Is one of among lalibela rock hewn churches! It's built thousand years ago by the king yimrehana kirstos! It's far away 40 or 50 kilometers from lalibela town!

It's about 1.5hrs drive from lalibella via bad roads. Transport for a private minibus should be not more than 1200 birr. Landrover not more than 1500 birr. Entrance fee for the church is 300 birr per person. A guide is around 500 Birr per group. The church is different to the churches in lalibella and the oldest in the region so it is worth the trip.

Restaurant
Unique Restaurant, located in the Lalibela region of Ethiopia, offers a delightful dining experience with delicious food and a charming ambiance. The restaurant is known for its amazing vegetable pizza and the best fasting beyaynetu in the area. The injera served here is fresh and of high quality, complementing the delectable dishes perfectly. Visitors praise the warm hospitality of the owner and her brother, who went out of their way to assist guests with local arrangements.
An absolute delight. “This is your home in Lalibella” was the owners response when I asked permission to film the coffee ceremony. The food, cooked from scratch, was delicious and terrific value for money. The owner and her family (including the cutest tots who are curious and keen to play) and so kind and welcoming. Don’t miss the chance to eat here if you’re staying in town.
Rakkle — Google review
We ate here twice in the same day. The vegetarian mixed lunch was super fresh and tasty, and so was the doro wat (chicken stew) we had for dinner. Very reasonable prices and super kind people running the place. Also the best Ethiopian coffee we've had on this trip-- Such a unique and balanced flavor compared with what you can find in Addis.
Sidney R — Google review
I had 2 lunches at this wonderful place. Yes I agree with previous reviews. The entrance might be unappealing and easy to miss out but the owner and her family are SO nice and the food IS delicious. Fried chicken with veggie and rice OR pizza are both about $2.5-2.75 US each and I got so full. Awesome choice for budget eating in Lalibela. Support local small businesses!!
Trekker T — Google review
Scam, 1200 birr (10usd) for a veggie meal for two. I can forgive that even though that’s the equivalent of an upscale meal for two in the capitals business district, but the injera was dry and stale and food was mediocre. Surely the other reviews are from clueless tourists who never spent more than a week in this country

This was hands-down the most incredible Ethiopian food I have ever had. The Bayanetu was outstanding, the injera fresh, and the hospitality beyond expectation. Sisco, the manager and matriarch, welcomed us in with open arms, offered that we try some of her sweet potato lunch, and then proceeded to make a great meal. It was so good, my travel partner and I decided to take a cooking class with her! At roughly 20$, this was much cheaper than the classes you might take in a bigger city and I guarantee it will be more authentic. Sisco speaks decent English, laughs a lot, and seems to enjoy teaching her skills to clueless foreigners like us. A highlight of my trip to Ethiopia.

Nestled within the captivating landscape of Lalibela, Bete Abba Libanos is a remarkable church that showcases the incredible artistry of rock-hewn architecture. Carved into the southern wall of the Southern Cluster, this stunning structure features a roof that remains connected to its original rock formation while being surrounded by a passageway, giving it an almost freestanding appearance.
The series of churches brings wonder to your mind on how people could have devised and organized such construction hundreds of years ago with a chisel and hammer. The size is astonishing.

It is an impressive, rather special historic complex of rock churches. The crowds and the multiple times one has to take one's shoes off makes it hard work. The air quality is also rather poor in most rooms, which adds another level of discomfort. Still a "must see" even if you only take a flavor of it and don't bother with every church.
Jeroen M — Google review

Ermias W — Google review
If you visit Ethiopia this is a must see place. You can do all 13 churches in 4 hours if you motivate your tour guide to not drag their feet (they insist on it taking 2 days). However the amount of sights you can see and things you can do is unbelievable - don't touch the 900 year old paintings as they won't stop you. Also admissions is $50 USD/person so be mindful of your ca$h.

The Tomb of Adam, located in Lalibela, Ethiopia, is a site with a fascinating historical connection to the original place in Jerusalem. According to Christian tradition, it is believed that the tomb of Adam is situated in Jerusalem under the place where Jesus was crucified. Lalibela is often referred to as the 'second Jerusalem' and includes its own version of the tomb of Adam.
Really its an interesting and surprised having historical relationship with the original place. Christian tradition generally places the tomb of Adam in Jerusalem under the place where Jesus was crucified, called the "Cave of Treasures". Asheton St. Maryam Monastery, located at an elevation of 3150m atop Abune Yosef mountain, offers a unique experience for visitors. The monastery is accessed via a challenging five-hour climb from Lalibela or a shorter hike from the car park. The journey to the monastery provides stunning views of the dramatic mountain scenery and rock-hewn caves along the way. Visitors can also explore sacred artifacts such as a rare bible and holy crosses within the monastery.
Best place if you can I recommend hike to mountain it has best view

The journey to the monastery is much more enjoyable than the monastery itself. It’s another example of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s greed, asking for an entrance fee of 30 dollars. This is absolutely absurd, and I say this as someone who loves monasteries. But this fee is simply too much – it’s money wasted here. However, the surrounding area and the journey through the villages with stunning views of Lalibela and the surroundings are definitely worth it. If you take a tuk-tuk, you can have it stop at the best spots for photos.

It’s 20$ usd cash per person to enter, which is extortionate. Not included with your 100$ church ticket. Wait for the lady at the blue sign to pay. Do not give money to anyone else except at the monastery entrance sign. The monastery itself is mildly interesting. The views of canyons and farms along the way are beautiful. The hike + visit will take you about 5 hours round trip including breaks, starting from the town center. Expect the usual tip hassling along the way, though much less than Lalibela proper. A guide is not needed, you can follow the route on google maps though there is a minor shortcut along a sketchy cliff trail you might not find on your own

Though not intricately built as the churches in Lalibela, going to this place is worth it just for the experience of getting there and seeing the surrounding area. I would recommend going there in the early morning or late afternoon as the climb takes it toll. The road to the church is not yet built so beware. Take a three wheeled taxies to there from city center as it would be cheaper for there to wait for you when you get down or hike. enjoy.

Amazing location for a little monastery, it’s worth the Climb here. The rocky mountaintop of this sacred mountain is beautiful and the 360° view of the surroundings spectacular.

I always being blessed visited Asheten maryiam monastery . Its the oldest monastery and the first construction of king lalibela him self in 9 and 10 century

Price update June 2019, it costs 350 birr. Not 200. The short 10min walk up to the monastery from the end of the road is nice as well as the views. They are building a roof and a museum, that is what I hope the money is going for, the Monastery it self is not going to wow anyone after all the churches of lalibela. Check the photo of the view, that is the best part. Also we paid 250 birr for the tuk tuk to take us there and back down to the centre of town, that is an adventure.

Did the hike all the way up from town but when we got to the checkpoint we were told foreigners must pay $20 US each to continue the last bit to the ruins. The checkpoint guy would not relent. OK then, got in a good workout with some fine views, but, ah, no, we think we'll just hike back down and skip the silly foreigner's entry price.

Sora Lodge is one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed. The room I was staying was beautifully decorated and the views from the balcony was amazing. The restaurant is located at the edge of the hill and it has breathtaking views. The food was great and most of all the sunset was unforgettable. Both the price of the room and the food was very fordable. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. To visit Lalibela was very peaceful and relaxing.

Lots of character, comfortable, very clean, incredible views, good food, hospitable, truly well-managed. Sora Lodge is a fantastic accommodation option in Lalibela. Our 2 nights were not enough given the array of things you may do in the surroundings of Lalibela. The Tukul room is beautifully appointed, from the balcony you may relax with a good book, enjoy the silence, birdwatching or monkey spotting. Best? Ethiopian hospitality. You feel welcome here and actually everywhere you go in this amazing country. Thank you, Sora Lodge staff and management!

My stay at Sora Lodge was absolutely lovely, the perfect place to experience Lalibela. The lodge has breathtaking views over the valley, peaceful surroundings, and a genuine sense of care from everyone on the team. A special thank you to Haptweld at reception, who was incredibly kind and helpful throughout my stay, and to Belayinesh, Descale, and Desita at the restaurant for their warm service and smiles — every meal felt personal and relaxed. And of course, my amazing guide Abebe made the whole Lalibela experience unforgettable! His knowledge, passion, and kindness brought so much depth to every site we visited. Highly recommend Sora Lodge to anyone coming to Lalibela — it’s comfortable, welcoming, and full of heart.

My family and I styed at sora lodge for the second time a weak a go for three nights, despite the challenges they had with long conflict in the area they have kept the lodge quite well and everything worked just fine. The staff of the lodge is amazingly friendly and helpful. We had arranged guided tour with the lodge and it went perfect with everything they have arranged for us. We will always go back to this beautiful lodge and I would like to recommend this place for everyone visiting Lalibela.

Ma'ed Lalibela Restaurant is a delightful culinary gem nestled in the heart of Lalibela, perfect for those seeking an authentic dining experience. When bustling with guests, particularly tour groups or conferences, the restaurant shines with its scrumptious buffet offerings. Diners can indulge in a variety of dishes that are fresh and beautifully presented. The friendly staff ensures you feel welcomed from the moment you step inside, enhancing your overall experience.
We’ve dined at this restaurant three times, and each visit has been a wonderful experience. The waiters and waitresses are always friendly, making us feel warmly welcomed from the moment we arrive. The food is consistently fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. While waiting for our meals, they treat us to handmade bread accompanied by mouthwatering sauces, which is a delightful start. We’ve made it a tradition to order one lamb dish and one fish dish each time. The grilled fish is incredibly fresh, and paired with crispy potatoes, it’s a perfect combination. The lamb is tender and full of flavour, cooked to perfection every time. One of the highlights of our visits was when the waiter offered us the chance to smell freshly roasted Ethiopian coffee beans, still warm. The aroma was incredible, adding an authentic local touch to our dining experience. Every time we leave, we do so with full bellies and happy hearts.

I dined twice at Ma'ed this week. The food is extremely fresh. I lived in Mexico and their amazing guacamole at Ma'ed transports you to the best restaurants in Mexico City. The main courses also did not disappoint in the least! On top of this, the owner is a very bright guy and a joy to talk with.

This restaurant had fantastic food, a true smorgasbord of delights. The food was served buffet style. In this picture you will see most of the food but not the 6 to 8 other dishes that were also a part of the buffet. The staff were kind and attentive. The owner was present and amazing. The coffee was delicious and the tea was fragrant and enticing. Make this your restaurant first choice for lunch while in Lalibela and just enjoy yourself dining on traditional Ethiopian food with the atmosphere and decor to match.

Excellent restaurant in Lalibela if there are enough guests (tour groups or conference) for you to enjoy their scrumptious buffet. Otherwise, the a la carte menu is short and the food was lackluster: the Nile Perch which was stated to be grilled was fried to a crisp and I couldn’t eat it. However, we asked them to prepare their fabulous beetroot, carrot and chickpea, and spinach fritters with fresh veg which we had enjoyed as part of their buffet offering and they complied. We also requested a delicious veg and lentil soup. They had everything ready for us to collect for dinner so we could take it back to our hotel in time for car curfew at 8 PM. They even loaned us real forks and knives to be returned the next day as they don’t usually do take out. Facilities are clean and service is excellent. We had wanted to try Ethiopian honey wine but they didn’t have any. The owner called the next day to say he had bought some. That’s service!

Very friendly staff and good food. Lovely terrace with a view into the valley.

Friendly, attentive staff and good cook! Vegetarian food available. Restaurant is about a year old, not so many guests yet and therefore very generous. Nice view from the open first floor. They offer folk music and folk dance shows after dinner for those who want to watch.Toilet needs to be improved. Steep but short uphill walk from main road.Place is not easy to access for people with disabilities.
