If you only have 1 day to spend in St Lucia, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
St Lucia is the gateway to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich biodiversity, coastal dunes and extensive estuary system. Visitors can see hippos and crocodiles on boat cruises, explore long sandy beaches along the Indian Ocean and enjoy activities like snorkeling, kayaking and fishing. The town offers easy access to nearby game reserves such as Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, making it a convenient base for combining marine, wetland and Big Five wildlife experiences.
With favorites like Cape Vidal, Sunset Lodge, and Veyane Cultural Village, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Ski Boat Club St. Lucia and Cape Vidal so you can get the best taste of St Lucia while you’re here. iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO-listed 820,390-acre reserve on South Africa's Elephant Coast, boasts diverse environments including beaches, coral reefs, dunes, and swamp forests. The park is home to the largest estuary in Africa - the St Lucia Estuary - where visitors can enjoy hippo and crocodile safaris or boat trips to spot whales and dolphins.
The views whiles driving through park, just breathtaking! The sounds if animals, snakes as we passed the thick bushes on either side of the stretch of road. The climax was when we drove up to Cape Vidal beach! It just felt like we weren't in South Africa! We were in a foreign country. The mood is relaxed, not full despite the fact that it was Jan 1st 2025! The beach has no life guards, it's a beach to relax & have a picnic by the beach. Swimming is at one's own risk! We passed a few chalets and a camp site located within the wetlands. Driving through the park at the max speed of 50 in places 30 & in some places 20km/h took us roughly 2hrs. We enjoyed our drive & the scenery we don't have in Jhb

For this time of the year the park was so green. We saw Zebra's 🦓, Kudu's, Elephants 🐘 Impala's, Buffaloes 🐃, Bush Pigs 🐽 and lots of beautiful bird 🐦 species. At Cape Vidal we saw vervet Monkeys 🙊 and mongoose. This is one of the most treasured wetland parks in South Africa. Well worth the visit.
Juanita — Google review
Nice park with massive lake in the middle. Great for relaxing drives and sun downer stops. We had a stunning stop for sundowners close by the lake. Make sure you don’t miss that. Probably most noteworthy is Cape Vidal as a point of interest in the park. We recommend the boat cruise instead of the game drive. The park is massive and the game viewing is okay. Somewhat difficult to find animals other than Antilopes, zebra and small game or birds. Hence the boat ride might be more exciting for visitors with limited time at their hands.
Afrika L — Google review
Amazing experience, bring a telephoto lens with you!
David F — Google review
The roads are horrific leading up to the Sodwana gate. The signage also needs to be improved leading up to the park. Google Maps also needs to be updated, however, when you find it's wild and absolutely gorgeous. Just a few tweaks and in my opinion this is the best park to visit in South Africa. We saw all the species of buck, zebra, elephant, a huge snake, lots of birds, tortoise, giraffe and warthog, It's great that it's also much more affordable now.
Natasha O — Google review
It was quite rainy the day that we went but wow, wow, wow! We still saw some beautiful animals and even had elephants in the road (we had to wait about 2 hours until they went off tue road and we could pass). Truly magnificent to have the bush, wetland, and beach experience!
Cat S — Google review
We took a boat tour with a group and saw several hippo families. The wetlands are beautiful. The guides were good. Well worth the trip.

Easy drive and pleasant way to see wildlife. We saw some zebra, warthog, buck along the way, and monkeys at Cape Vidal beach.

Bodies of Water
Saint Lucia Estuary in South Africa offers a unique opportunity to see hippos, crocodiles, and various bird species like fish eagles. The estuary boardwalk provides a peaceful stroll with vendors selling beautiful artwork made from local fruit. While the estuary itself is mostly covered in reeds, the walk leads to the ocean nearby. Visitors appreciate the natural beauty of this place and its potential for restoration into a pristine ecosystem with some human intervention.
Gorgeous place. Full of wildlife and natural beauty. I highly recommend the hippo and croc boat cruises. As well as eating at the restaurants on the main road. I really had amazing time
Kavesh N — Google review
Sharks and crocodiles are often present in the muddy water. There are no warning signs. The current was hectic. Not for swimming!!!! 3 out of 5 of us nearly died, if not for God's grace. No life guards. I wish someone would warn people, so I'm trying my best for your sake. I hope this helps.
Devon L — Google review
Total disappointment. We used to go there to enjoy fishing in the estuary and it was great fun for the kids. For some reason they have completely closed off the estuary and there is no more sea fish in it - so the only fish you catch is barbell and kirper...and sometimes getting hooked on a croc. Now you have to walk a mile on beach sand to go and fish on the beach, and by the time you get there everyone is tired and miserable. Will definitely avoid it in future.
Daniel J — Google review
Very nice to visit.. Not functional as an Estuary.. with some human intervention it could become a pristine system once again.

There is an estuary board walk near the estuary. The estuary is mostly covered in reeds and cannot really be seen on the walk. The short walk takes you up to the ocean next to the Estuary. Great way to enjoy a peaceful stroll. There is also vendors outside that make beautiful artwork from a type of fruit. Support them if you can.

Saint Lucia is a hidden treasure. It comprises of the estuary and the beach. The estuary is home to numerous animals which is beautiful to witness. The views are endless. If you're looking for peace and tranquility, go to Saint Lucia

Crocodile Centre St Lucia

Nature & Wildlife Areas
The Crocodile Centre St Lucia is a conservation center rather than a farm, where crocodiles are released over time, including those that hatch and grow there. Visitors can witness live feedings and observe the different age groups of crocodiles in separate enclosures. The facility offers informative experiences, although it may benefit from some updates. Despite this, it's an interesting place to visit before heading into the game reserve.
This experience is hands down made better by their guide TK. We were in the area and were looking for something else to do before heading back to our accommodation and came across the Croc Centre. A bunch of the reviews said it was run down, so we weren't expecting much. It cost us R70 per adult. We walked in by ourselves and looked at the first croc pool by ourselves. When we got to the bridge and were looking at the other crocs there, TK spotted us from across the way and asked if we would be interested in holding a juvenile crocodile. Which we were very excited to do. He then stayed with us for the remainder of the time, walking us through each section of the park and explaining/educating at each step. It was a public holiday, and I am sure many people would prefer to be with friends or loved ones and not at work but TK was an absolute light. He truly loves these crocs and what the centre stands for. He is incredibly knowledgable, while being equally humourous. If you're able to have TK as a guide, grab him off the bat, he is undoubtedly what makes this experience worth every cent spent times ten. In terms of the accommodation - you can see it requires some maintenance and upkeep, but it's really not bad at all. The crocs are well looked after and all seem to be very contempt. For what you pay, the knowledge, experience and sightings (and supporting a really good cause) this is undoubtedly an activity worth trying.

From Family Favourite to Forgotten Shadow. I grew up in this area during the 1980s, and this place was once a highlight of our family’s Sunday outings. Seeing it now broke my heart. The once-beautiful enclosures are unclean and neglected, signs have faded, roofs have collapsed, and the walkways are unsafe. The cages stand empty and full of dust, while the water features lie dry and overgrown. Although most of the animals still seem healthy, their surroundings are in a sad state of decay. It’s painful to see a place that once brought so much joy fall so far — and at nearly R200 per couple... Cash Only, it’s hard to justify the visit. Respect the lives you hold in captivity here and clean it up or return them to the wild and close it down!
John C — Google review
The facility is extremely run down, broken down bathrooms, buildings and walkways in disrepair, tea room not operating and not clean. The saving grace is the staff, they clearly have a deep passion for what they do and made the visit enjoyable. If the facility was properly maintained this would be a jewel.
Reno A — Google review
Highly recommended to visitors local and abroad. Make sure you ask for tour guide Mr T.K. very informative and polite gentleman. As 1st time visitors we were warmly received by Reception and the experience seeing these awesome animals up close and personal was 2nd to none. Also N/B that it's best to go on Saturday from 13h30 and Sundays from 11h30 whereby staff host up close and personal croc demonstrations for the visitors.
Julian G — Google review
Today we visit crocodile Centre, it was very good to be there! We had a professional fantastisch guide he told us every thing about the croc,s! I recommend to visit this park and ask to the guide TK!
Henk R — Google review
The crocs were cool but all of the facilities lacked seemingly any maintenance or upkeep. The informational signs were so faded and dilapidated that it was hard to read at times. Many animal exhibits have long since been abandoned. Tours happen at limited times.
Cody S — Google review
We had a good experience. There’s a great variety of crocodiles and reptiles to see, and it made for a unique and memorable visit. That said, the facility could really use some maintenance and a good clean-up. The place feels a bit run down and untidy. That said,We had a wonderful time and loved learning more about these incredible animals.
Tamika G — Google review
Great experience of beautiful creatures. It was really cool to learn about different types of crocs and alligators and see them in their natural swampy habitat. TK was the best tour guide, he even let us hold a baby croc! Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area.

The trip to Veyane Cultural Village was an exhilarating experience. The guide gained extensive knowledge about the Zulu culture, emphasizing the importance of respecting ancestors. They explored traditional medicine and learned traditional dances. Additionally, they participated in crafting necklaces and other native items, even dressing up in authentic Zulu attire. Interactions with village members were enriching and highly recommended.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Veyane Cultural Village, and it was an unforgettable experience that truly celebrated the richness of African culture. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the stunning traditional designs that adorned the village. Each structure and piece of decor beautifully showcased the artistry and craftsmanship of local artisans, reflecting the vibrant heritage of the region. One of the highlights of my visit was the mesmerizing local dance performances. The dancers, dressed in colorful traditional attire, brought the stories of their ancestors to life with their rhythmic movements and infectious energy. It was a joy to watch, and the passion they displayed was truly inspiring. The performances not only entertained but also educated visitors about the cultural significance behind each dance, making the experience even more enriching. The staff at Veyane Cultural Village deserve special recognition as well. Their warmth and attentiveness made me feel right at home. They were knowledgeable about the cultural aspects of the village and were more than happy to share insights and answer questions. The exceptional service they provided contributed to an atmosphere of genuine hospitality, making my visit all the more enjoyable. Overall, I highly recommend Veyane Cultural Village to anyone looking to immerse themselves in authentic African culture. With its breathtaking designs, captivating dance performances, and outstanding service, it’s a place that truly embodies the spirit of community and tradition. I can't wait to return and experience it all over again!

Our visit to Veyane Cultural Zulu Village was truly special. It was such a wonderful and eye-opening experience to learn about the rich traditions, history, and daily life of the Zulu people. The hosts welcomed us with genuine warmth and made us feel right at home, sharing their stories and culture in such an engaging and respectful way. We were fascinated by the music, dances, and crafts, and gained a much deeper appreciation for Zulu heritage. Thank you to everyone at the village for sharing your world with us, it was unforgettable, and we wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone eager to connect with authentic Zulu culture.

Absolutely brilliant. Spent a wonderful 3 hours being taught Zulu culture by lovely people. They took so much time to make us feel welcome a d the dancing was spectacular. Every person who visits Zulu land should come here to learnt about these amazing people.

I would probably actually give this a 4.5 but I’ll round up. They don’t accept US dollar for payment but after us begging they took 50usd for 4 people. You take a tour and they tell you a lot about their culture and lifestyle from back when this was actually a tribe. Now it seems to be a reenactment of the tribe with lodging here. Our tour was about an hour and a half.

Ski Boat Club St. Lucia is a laid-back and welcoming restaurant located along the estuary, offering a diverse menu and a charming beer garden. While it may not offer the best view of the estuary, it provides an ideal spot to savor South African evenings with a cold beer. Visitors can relish impressive views of the St. Lucia Estuary and its wildlife, including playful hippos while indulging in delectable treats.
Good selection of pizza, burgers, seafood and some meat dishes. Nice garden, rooftop terrace and views down to the beach. Service was friendly and efficient. We watched the rugby on one of the tv’s they have available.

We've been here several years ago and then we had a great view over the sea, but now it was allover crowded with plants. It's not that great anymore allthough the chips were very nice! When you're a vegetarian there is not much to eat...
Silvia B — Google review
We were excited about the prospect of freshly caught fish being on the menu. Sadly not the case anymore as the boats no longer launch from the club. That being said, there is plenty on the menu and the pizzas looked amazing. And, what's not to love about the view. Take the time and visit
Ricardo W — Google review
The view was lovely, the service was great but the food was okay. My pizza felt more like a pie - there we too many toppings and it was mostly under the cheese. There also wasn’t much flavour. The tomato was also a bright and light red similar to what you squeeze out the bottle. The pizza burger we had was really good however. Henk was super entertaining and really nice and provided amazing service.
Gianni — Google review
Great little place on the Estuary. Pizzas were crispy with a thin base and generous toppings. Mussel pot was served in a cast iron pot and the mussels were super fresh. Fish and chips were old-school great with a thin basting and crispy-good. Very reasonable prices and efficient service.

Cape Vidal is a must-visit destination in South Africa, located within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. A full-day safari tour offers an exciting adventure with experienced rangers guiding visitors through diverse biospheres and providing opportunities for game viewing. The tour also includes beach time, with snorkeling as a potential activity, weather permitting. Visitors can opt for a day trip or stay in log cabins to fully immerse themselves in the park's natural beauty.
Cape Vidal is a beautiful jewel edged at the end of a very insightful game drive. The sea is calm n clean n there are life guards on duty. There is a camping site for those that enjoy the bush n wildlife 24/7
Arlene S — Google review
The newly refurbished cabins are basic, but comfortable. You will need to provide your own water for drinking. The beach is beautiful. Plenty of bush buck around the cabins. The Samango and Vertvet Monkeys are troublesome. You need to keep your doors and windows closed,as they will raid your cabin. It's a lovely place to recharge and rest.
Trish W — Google review
Camped at Vidal. The bathrooms are clean, water came out clear and hot with good pressure for a shower. Construction maintenance is needed - eg broken window, one light working in bathroom, drainage. You do need drinking water. The honey badger raided bins at night and the monkeys are getting fearless. Unfortunately we heard of other visitors throwing their left over food in the bushes which makes the wildlife more brazen. Stunning beach for snorkelling even at a neap tide Curio shop had lots of ice creams, cold drinks, some basics. Cash only!

There’s an awesome pool and deck with awesome views of the estuary at sunset. Very central to all amenities and activities within 1 km of the lodge. Everything is exactly as you see it on the web. Very nice, well equipped, clean cabins. The owner is very helpful and available to answer any questions you may have. She even lent us snorkeling equipment and a parasol for the beach (free of charge). The facility is well maintained and monitored all afternoon and night (due to the hippos). Sunset lodge is officially 1 of my favourite places that i have ever stayed at in South Africa. We were mesmerised by the beautiful setting and spaciously cosy cabins. What stood our the most for me in the cabin was the fully equipped kitchen. Every kitchen utensils and machine you needed was provided. We barely had to ask for anything! How amazing is that. Shelley was a great host. We will definitely be seeing her soon. Walking distance to nearby market places with restaurants that are very affordable.
