Deadvlei is a stunning white clay pan in Namib-Naukluft National Park, often overshadowed by its neighbor Sossusvlei but considered one of Southern Africa's greatest sights. The area features ancient, petrified trees rising from the pan, casting striking shadows on the bleached-white ground against a backdrop of cobalt-blue skies and towering orange sands. It is part of a group of pans including Dead Vlei, Nara Vlei, and Hidden Vlei.
Absolutely stunning place to visit! Drive there as early as possible to avoid high heat. Walk to Deadvlei valley from car park is 30 mins or less ON SAND! can be difficult terrain. So peaceful and special - what an absolute honour to visit here. Pictures have no filter

Amazing places to visit. Take water and sun cream because it is 15 mimutes walk in one way. And better come here in the morning. This is one of the most iconic places in Namibia. It's a beautiful area where you'll find sun-scorched tree stumps rising from a cracked salt flat, surrounded by towering red dunes. DeadVlei means "dead marsh." Vlei is the Afrikaans word for lake or swamp, and dead because everything around it seems otherworldly. Deadvlei is a white clay pan located in Sossusvlei, a valley between dunes in Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. It is the oldest desert in the world, dating back over 80 million years. The trees are estimated to be around 800 years old and died because there was no longer enough water to survive. The remaining tree skeletons are now black and scorched by the intense heat. From parking, you can pay 10$ for a jeep 4x4 to take you here if you can not go with your car.
Monika K — Google review
Was on my bucket list and although very unique the walk from the parking area is very challenging. It's in deep sand so go prepared by wearing boots or closed shoes that won't allow the sand in.
Dr D — Google review
A piece of mother natures best. Do yourself a favour and come early in the morning, we slept in and took a long drive there and hit it at lunch and it was hotter than the surface of the sun. Make sure you take plenty of of water and leave some in your vehicle in the shade as it heats up as you walk.
Craig L — Google review
An incredible, life-changing, singular experience that we will never forget. If you’re planning an African adventure make sure this is on your list. This epic landscape boasts some of the world’s biggest dunes in the world’s oldest desert and they’re actually accessible to climb. Go as early in the day as you can for the best photo ops as the dunes are most stunningly defined by shadows cast by a low sun ... and before the heat really kicks in.
Matt D — Google review
Deadvlei is absolutely unreal. The drive there is a little tricky, especially the sandy part at the end, but once you get to the parking it’s pretty easy to walk around. The views are insane – those dead trees against the orange dunes and blue sky are just unforgettable. Totally worth the effort!
Georgia C — Google review
I came valley when it was sunset, and strong wind has come-.So I took some good photos. The way come to valley not easy , you should repair shoes for walking in sand .That’s hard when we had to out valley on time cause the way out not easy, car easy stuck in sand :( Anyway , that’s so amazing place I ’ve ever come.
Truong L — Google review
Dead Vlei was a little under whelming after seeing the pictures on the Internet. The dead trees are fewer than this pictures. The surrounding Sand Dunes are impressive.

Deadvlei Hiking Trail

Hiking area
Embark on an unforgettable journey along the Deadvlei Hiking Trail, nestled in the mesmerizing Namib Desert. This trail offers a unique blend of stunning landscapes and ancient trees that have stood for over 900 years, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The hike is relatively easy, taking about 20 to 30 minutes one way through soft sand, but be prepared for a bit of exertion as you traverse this beautiful terrain.
This place was awesome. It's a challenge to get to, but worth the effort. The regular trail is easy, no real fitness is needed. Walking along the dead trees is otherworldly. The huge dunes rise right up around them. You can all climb to the top of the dunes if you wish. A reasonable round trip up to the top of the dune and walking back through the trees will take about 90min to 2hrs.

When in Namibia, you should not miss to go to the Deadvlei. Beauty of the nature, silence and peace that you feel there is worth of visiting this place. Weather you'll walk this sandy trail bearfooted or in boots, you will experience your connection with a power of nature. A morning view on that trees, standing there for more than 900 years, will charge your body batteries and stay in your memories forever. Recommended from my heart.
Damir V — Google review
Try both top of dune and valley itself. You can reach the destination by your own 4 wheel drive, but it's probably worth taking the local shuttle (about 8 eur round tour).
Sergei S — Google review
It's not easy hiking through the desert sand, but the view is worth the effort. It's like a moonscape. Bring water!
Janice M — Google review
Relatively easy walk to Deadvlei from the parking area over sand dunes. The contrast between the red dunes, white vlei, dead trees and blue sky is amazing. Take plenty of water and avoid the heat of the day. One loo near the car park but not very pleasant.
Jan H — Google review
The walk to Deadvlei takes between 20 and 30 mins (one direction), depending on your tempo. You are walking through sand so it could feel a bit more tiring. Avoid visiting during mid day, since it can get quite hot and you might not be a fan of heat strokes.
Sands S — Google review
You can hike Big Daddy to get to Deadvlei, or take the hiking trail. It was about a 20 minute walk in sand going up and down, so we were definitely out of breath!!
Happy O — Google review
A short hike from the first parking place , best to do in the morning when it's not too hot. You will get some nice pics - you can use them as postcards!

Big Mamma Dune

4.7
(50)
Big Mamma Dune is a challenging climb, more difficult than Dune 45, but the stunning view and vibrant colors of the surrounding landscape make it worthwhile. It offers an excellent panoramic view in all directions at 360 degrees, especially during sunrise or sunset. The steep ascent rewards hikers with a beautiful view from the top. Accessible only by 4x4, visitors can park near the edge of the parking area and hike towards Big Mamma dune.
Gets very steep close to the top. Rewards you with a really nice view on top though, definitely worth the hike! Be sure to walk up Big Mama early and if possible in the shade, otherwise it'll be a real challenge! Also bring enough water.
Daniel H — Google review
If you're looking to escape the crowds and earn a panoramic reward, Big Mama Dune at the far end of Sossusvlei is your golden ticket. We tackled the ascent in the morning light, and the view from the top - stretching across the salt pan and the surrounding dunes - was nothing short of breathtaking. While most visitors flock to the nearby Deadvlei (and rightly so - its surreal beauty deserves every bit of attention), Big Mama offers a quieter, more contemplative experience. It’s a climb that rewards both the legs and the soul. To make the most of your visit, avoid hiking during peak midday heat or in windy conditions. The sand can be unforgiving, and the sun relentless - timing is everything. Be sure to bring plenty of water; this is not a stroll, it’s a sandy workout that demands preparation. The final stretch of the drive from the 2WD parking to Deadvlei requires a 4x4 vehicle. The sand can be deep, and low sun angles at dawn or dusk may make visibility tricky due to intense light contrasts. If you don’t have a 4x4 or prefer not to drive in these conditions, a shuttle service is available for N$ 200. Here’s a tip for those seeking solitude and a unique vantage point: after the first Deadvlei parking area, continue driving to the very end of Sossusvlei. That’s where Big Mama awaits - towering, serene, and ready to be climbed. Whether you’re chasing silence, sand, or surreal landscapes, Big Mama delivers. And don’t skip Deadvlei - its ghostly trees and cracked earth are a photographer’s dream.

If you climbed Dune 45 you are well prepared for mama. It's more challenging than Dune 45 and a challenge you should definitely consider. The view and just the incredible colors of the surrounding landscape makes this worth it! Try and go early! Enjoy! I saw a lot of Oryxs below the dune enjoying some shade from the sun. We even found an entire Oryx skeleton.
Travis D — Google review
Only accessible with a 4x4. Park by the edge of the parking and hike towards the Big Mama dune. Take water and sunscreen

Climbing big mama is not too strenuous and provides a beautiful view over sossusvlei.

Silvia S — Google review
Fantastic, though surprisingly difficult, climb.
Mark K — Google review
My first look at the Namib heart. Good for the first ascent of the dune. If the sand is not too hot, you can go barefoot. Excellent panoramic view in all directions at 360 degrees, both in the evening and in the morning. It is a special pleasure to run down from the top of the dune with giant steps. You can try to move down on any suitable board or tray.

Big Daddy Dune

4.9
(124)
Mountain peak
Big Daddy Dune, located in Sossusvlei, is a massive 325m-tall red-sand dune offering stunning views of the surrounding desert landscape. The climb to the top is challenging but achievable for those with moderate fitness levels. It takes about 2 hours to reach the summit, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Sossusvlei and the endless sea of dunes.
When you see the dune from the bottom you are surely not so thrilled to climb it in that extreme heat. But it is well worth it. The first half is much much harder than the second and the views from the top are just something else. Absolutely breathtaking. Plus you can get down in like 5 minutes and it is so much fun. Well well worth it to climb all the way to the top when you are there.
Mojmír R — Google review
Hiking up to the top Big Daddy was exhilarating! Make sure that you step into the tracks of the person in front of you for the easiest hike. Keep your eyes down to see the various different beatles that make the dune their home! Make sure you've got a tie down for your hat, because it does tend to blow on the ridgeline. The jog down the 45° slope to the playa is a blast!
Matt — Google review
Big Daddy Dune emphasize its breathtaking summit views of the surrounding dunes and Deadvlei, and the exhilarating, fast descent. Spectacular
Yogesh P — Google review
What a place and what an experience this is. Views on the drive towards the dunes are seriously impressive and mind blowing, but the ability to walk up and on top of the Big Daddy Dune is not one to miss! There a few different routes you can take to the top but all are well worth it for the incredible views but there’s only one way you should go down - straight down the steep side and enjoy every second of the fun!
Alex S — Google review
The Big Daddy Dune in Sossusvlei is massive, and I completely underestimated it. The climb was quite difficult, as it's dune sand all the way from the bottom to the top. We took it slow (just over an hour to the summit) and often paused to rest and take in the views. Reaching the top is definitely worth it as a sense of achievement washes over you. From here, you have breathtaking views of Sossusvlei, as well as the seemingly endless sea of dunes stretching out before you. To descend, you have multiple options, with most opting for the straight down route towards Deadvlei. We ended up deciding to go straight down and it was a lot of fun, and very exhilarating as you move quite quickly. It is however good to note that this option is potentially risky and not for everyone. At the bottom, we headed back through Deadvlei towards the main Sossusvlei area. If you're planning on visiting Deadvlei as well, I highly recommend climbing Big Daddy first. I have climbed multiple dunes in the past, but Big Daddy was special. It was one of the highlights of my trip through Namibia and something I will never forget!
Dewald R — Google review
Beautiful and scenic hike. It's not as hard as advertised. Simply a must do.
Dragan L — Google review
Breathtaking place. Not a super easy climb, but definitely enjoyable.
Amir S — Google review
Incredible. Accessible to anyone with moderate fitness. Being a runner, I think the effort needed to climb to the top is comparable to a 15km run. Which of course doesn't mean that you can't do the dune if you don't run... because you likely can. Just don't follow the crowds starting to climb the ascent which is closest to the parking lot. Keep to the left instead and start the ascent some 0.5 km away. Saves you at least 20 mins and some efforts, too.

Hidden Vlei

4.7
(29)
Hidden Vlei is a remote and surreal destination located in the midst of the desert dunes. Accessible from the 24 Sossusvlei parking area, it involves a 4 km roundtrip hike that may not be well-marked, so visitors should follow previous footprints and carry sufficient water. The unearthly dry vlei offers an otherworldly experience with preserved trees emerging from the cracked clay surface surrounded by orange sand dunes.
It may not be as well known as Deadvlei , but Hidden Vlei is quite special. Surrounded bye the orange Sand dunes with a couple of preserved trees emerging from the white, cracked and perfectly flat clay surface, it’s solitude and expanse are quietly mesmerising, and well worth the walk from the car park for Dead Vlei. An early start is best!
Stuart P — Google review
Other than a desert walk experience, hidden vlei doesn’t offer much in comparison to deadvlei. If you’re waiting for sunset it’s a nice walk to kill time.
Chris K — Google review
As a warning, it is quite a long walk from where you park your vehicle, I didn't realise and got heatstroke walking there - don't do this at midday! It does vary according to seasons but is a large vlei that is majestic when you do reach it although I felt slightly disappointed since I was expecting a bigger area but still do it!
Linda T — Google review
Hands down my favorite area out here!! Nobody was there and you could see miles and miles of dunes!
Patrick — Google review
It’s 30 minutes walk and very beautiful landscape all the way
Muammer Y — Google review
Amazing place to visit! If you have an hour to spare, I would definitely recommend going here. Not many people do which makes it very quiet and you can even have the place to yourself if you're lucky (we did at around 10 in the morning). It might not be as pretty as Deadvlei, but being there alone makes up alot.
Thibaut D — Google review
One of our favorite places in the area because not many people make the effort to walk there. It was quite exhausting after the sunrise at dune 45 but for sure worth it.
Christoph R — Google review
Amazing, Majestic and quit an awesome view. I would not recommend doing the walk midday, but this may vary also from season to season.

Fairy Circles Sossusvlei

3.0
(2)
The Fairy Circles Sossusvlei are peculiar bare sand circles found in the grassy desert plains of Namibia. These enigmatic formations appear and vanish over the years, with no clear explanation for their existence. While some theories attribute their creation to underground termite nests, excavations have failed to provide evidence supporting this claim. The mystery surrounding the origin of these circles adds to the allure of this natural wonder.
(Translated by Google) Fairy circles are strange circles of sand bare of grass in places where there is a lot of grass around them in the sandy desert pastures of Namibia. They form and then disappear after years for no known reason The reasons for its formation are still unknown. The reasons for the formation of these circles were attributed to the formation of underground termite nests, but excavations have not shown any evidence of this. Other explanations for these circles have failed, such as differences in nutrients in the soil or plant death due to toxic fumes from the ground. A comparison was made of satellite images from 2004 to 2008, and it was discovered that the circles are completely stable. These circles sometimes appeared in their full size, sometimes they appeared and then quickly grew to their full size, and sometimes they disappeared. The sizes of these circles range from large to small, with the diameter of the smallest reaching two meters, while the diameter of the largest can reach 12 meters.
