Kingstown in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Kingstown, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Kingstown, the capital of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, offers a relaxed Caribbean port city feel with a backdrop of green hills and historic architecture. You can stroll along its busy waterfront and narrow streets, visit the 18th-century St. George’s Anglican Cathedral, and explore Fort Charlotte for panoramic views over the harbor. The city is also known for its botanical gardens, among the oldest in the Western Hemisphere, featuring tropical plants and a famous breadfruit tree lineage. Kingstown serves as a gateway to the rest of the islands, making it a convenient base for ferries, sailing trips, and excursions to beaches and hiking trails.
With favorites like Vee Jay's Restaurant & Bar, Botanical Gardens, and Victoria Park Road, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Vee Jay's Restaurant & Bar so you can get the best taste of Kingstown while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Gardens
The Botanical Gardens in Kingstown, established in 1765, cover 20 acres of land and are the oldest of their kind in the Western Hemisphere. This lush oasis is a haven for a diverse range of tropical flora and fauna, including rare plants, trees, orchids, and exotic birds like the iconic St Vincent Parrot. The gardens offer visitors an opportunity to explore over 250 years of history while strolling through well-maintained grounds featuring various species of trees.
I had just an amazing and educational time here. Our tour guide, Anthony, was superb! We got a bit of history and comedy in the mix, which made this tour so memorable. Learning about the different plants, their uses, the uniqueness were all interesting tid bits - some of which I didn't know! This tour was nothing short of engaging and we really enjoyed it. Excellent price point too! It was US6/XCD 13.50 per person, and the guided tour is an additional cost. Your choice to go off on your own but I highly recommend a guided tour

As the oldest botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere, it is worth the visit and you can see the colorful St. Vincent parrot, which will talk back to you. Whether you stroll on your own or join an informative guided tour (worth money), this serene spot is absolutely worth a visit
Justin S — Google review
Beautiful botanical gardens and lovely stroll. Definitely recommend getting a tour guide. Lots of history and good explanation of all the trees in the property. If you’re in town, it’s a great way to kill an hour or so.
Saed A — Google review
Good to see on the island. 5 dollars for entry fee and extra 6 if you need a guide. The guide fee is higher than the entry fee. Must take a cab if your cannot walk 4 to 5 km fr the port. And if you walk look out for the entrance board which may easily go unnoticed. It has a lot of trees and some of them are ry interesting.

It's a great spot to stroll, chill, and enjoy the view. Don't forget to bring water when you go.

St. Mary's Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Lady of the Assumption, is a remarkable landmark in Kingstown that showcases stunning Gothic architecture blended with traditional Caribbean elements. Established in 1820, this Roman Catholic church features exquisite stained-glass windows and intricate wooden details that reflect its rich history. Just a short stroll from other notable sites like the Kingstown Anglican Cathedral, it offers visitors an opportunity to delve into the city's religious heritage while providing a serene escape from daily life.
From outside the church looks very unique on its design and look. It is very old one
Stanly P — Google review
Beautiful on outside, no clear way to entrance. On todays visit it was boarded up with no clear direction of how to get inside. Despite Google saying it was open. I'm sure it would have been an instant 5 stars i could have gotten inside.

Kingstown Fish Market

Kingstown Fish Market is a vibrant hub of activity where visitors can immerse themselves in the local atmosphere and savor the flavors of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The market offers an array of fresh produce, spices, handmade crafts, and souvenirs. It's a great place to interact with friendly vendors, sample local dishes and snacks, and explore colorful stalls. Additionally, it's known for its abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as reasonably priced products.
A lovely indoor market. You can get all of your fruits and vegetables here, as well as oils, spices, and seasonings. The produce is fresh and in abundance. All the fruits & veg have seeds, which I have missed, to be honest. You cannot get any products when they are not in season. Everything is reasonably priced, it's easy to get to, and there is paid parking available. Excellent quality of fresh food.
Mel G — Google review
Freshly caught fish, my favorite is small robbin and medium size snapper.

This place is a MUST stop on your Kingstown Market adventures! If you love seafood and you have a grill or kitchen to cook out of when here, stop in and get you some freshly caught Tuna or Shark! So many options here so look around and check prices etc. It is located right near the van drop off/pick up area.

Vee Jay's Restaurant & Bar

Restaurant
If you're on the hunt for authentic Caribbean flavors, Vee Jay's Restaurant & Bar in Saint Vincent is a must-visit. This vibrant eatery serves up traditional Vincy cuisine with a menu that features delightful options like mutton or fish stew, curried goat, and flavorful rotis. The specials are creatively displayed on a blackboard, ensuring there's always something new to try. For those looking for lighter fare, they also offer sandwiches and burgers alongside classic fish-and-chips.
If you visit St Vincent and the Grenadines and long for the local food of the land, you must go to Veejays in downtown Kingstown, St. Vincent. When I got there, I was surprised to find how small the place was, and not surprised how many people were coming in and out . Majority of them taking carry outs, the others, dining in. The limited dining area is populated by orange and green furniture, actually very colorful, with an adjoining bar. They had run out of Pelau (a spicy staple with rice, vegetables and meat cooked in one pot). So I settled for the chicken roti. Wrapped like a burrito, with a nice half cooked dough and stuffed with more than generous amounts of chicken (bones and all). Accompaniments were a thick grainned yellow rice and a wonderful serving of black beans. There was fresh flavor, tenderness and satisfaction at every bite. Service was exceptional. Wow. Must go back for the Pelau.

The atmosphere was great however it was the lunch rush hour, and it took almost an hour for my food to get to me. The food is not how I remembered it to be, but it wasn’t bad. It’s a great place to go if you’re going for drinks tho!
Ollider W — Google review
Vee Jay’s Restaurant is a good spot for local food, they are well known for their rotis. Their lasagna is my personal favorite, I've had their burger and fries it was decent (food overall about 3/5). The real standout is the bar, their cocktails are excellent! The place can get busy around lunch but is calm in the evening. They offer indoor, rooftop, and bar seating. Service is okay, and the vibe is decent overall.
Riaanna J — Google review
We went to Saint Vincent for carnival. When we first arrived, it was a little busy. One phone call, and the manager (pictured below) sprang into action. She took EXCELLENT care of us. We came from Texas, Pennsylvania, New York, and Jamaica and they made sure that we were able to eat. It was close to closing when we arrived. The roti was delicious, the drinks are well price, and Vee Jay's is centrally located in the middle of all the action. We met other patrons from the UK and some that were local. It's a great atmosphere and anyone visiting the island should pop in. We will be back!
Devon C — Google review
Delicious food and great service! Lively, even when most other business in the city centre are closed (we went for dinner on Thursday around 8pm). No prices on menus but everything is reasonable.
Llewelyn H — Google review
When in Kingstown a visit for hearty delicious food here. It is a great experience. Bring XCD eastern Caribbean currency. The food will be cheaper

I want to personally thank Vee Jay’s for consistently delivering exceptional food and service. As a foreigner, the moment I walk in, I’m instantly reminded of my mother and grandmother cooking. The warmth, flavors, and care behind every dish make it feel like home. I’m especially grateful to Julia, who went above and beyond by crafting a pumpkin pie. That pie is unlike anything I’ve had in the States—each bite is pure comfort. At Vee Jay’s the food is more than just savory—it’s alive. The ingredients dance on your tongue, creating a truly satisfying experience. It’s not just a meal; it’s a taste of St. Vincent and the Grenadines right here on your plate. If you ever find yourself in town and want a genuine taste of comfort and Caribbean flavor, do not miss Vee Jay’s Restaurant & Bar—authentic, heartfelt, and unforgettable. Why VJ’s stands out: Homestyle Caribbean cuisine: A beloved staple in Kingstown for decades—described as “a true taste of SVG” and known for freshly cooked West Indian dishes Friendly, attentive staff! Top-rated roti & local favorites: Frequently praised as one of the best roti spots on the island! Thank you, Julia and the Vee Jay’s team—I look forward to my next visit and another slice of that unforgettable pumpkin pie!
