Saint-Pierre in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Saint-Pierre, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Saint-Pierre offers a striking mix of Caribbean scenery and dramatic history, as the former capital of Martinique largely destroyed by the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée. Visitors can explore atmospheric ruins, small museums, and a reconstructed theater that recall the town’s past as the “Little Paris of the Antilles.” The black-sand beaches and clear waters attract swimmers and snorkelers, while nearby dive sites feature shipwrecks from the eruption. With Mount Pelée looming above, the area also serves as a gateway for hiking and nature excursions in Martinique’s lush northwest.
With favorites like Arhum Glacé, Le 1902, and Cachot de Cyparis, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Concept store Créole Arts Café Saint Pierre Martinique and Arhum Glacé so you can get the best taste of Saint-Pierre while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Museums
The Mémorial de la catastrophe de 1902 | Musée Frank A. Perret is a must-visit destination for understanding the devastating eruption of Pelee Volcano in 1902. This museum presents a collection of artifacts, pictures, and videos that vividly depict the events before and after the disaster. The museum offers a unique perspective that words alone cannot convey. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a discounted visit to the Clement distillery/plantation as an added bonus.
A definite stop in Saint-Pierre. It's a small place, but the museum is arranged into a before, during, and after the eruption of 1902 that wiped out the town. Lots of artifacts. The audio device in English helped a lot.
Brent C — Google review
Stumbled across this wonderful little museum on a rainy day in St. Pierre. So glad we stopped in and checked out the artifacts recovered from the volcanic eruption.
Rebecca L — Google review
Easy to follow and everything is in French and English. The museum tells the story of the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelee, which destroyed the town and killed 30 thousand people within 3 minutes.
Georgia L — Google review
A good museum that tells the story of 1902. Some interesting artifacts, which are well presented. There is an audioguide, or you can download the app - it does English. So the story of the town is told well, but if you want to find out more about the volcano itself then drive up to Le Morne Rouge and visit La Maison des Volcans. https://maps.app.goo.gl/n94YnD9Th8HGFkez5

Very informative museum about a terrible explosion by the nearby volcano. We visited on a Sunday morning during an excursion from a Celebrity cruise ship. We were the first and only ones there at the time. It is small and can get crowded.
Stan S — Google review
We enjoyed the museum which was detailed and bilingual. The Town itself has few amenities. Parking was tricky. Pack a lunch. Worth the trip to see the well preserved ruins from the 1902 volcano.
Lisa O — Google review
While you're in Martinique, stop by at this museum. Interesting short history about the eruption of Pelée Volcano in 1902. The view from the museum is beautiful. Located in Sainte Pierre. The place is clean, parking is available, toilet is super clean.

This isn't actually the correct location of the prison cell as seen on maps so don't get confused. (Hence the 4 star review) The cell isn't located by the building but through the ruins and by the right far end. The cell was originally built as a powder deposit. Hence the thick walls and lack of windows. The history of this small landmark is extraordinary. You may only see a small cell but what happened here is an incredible story. I recommend you take the time to read about St. Pierre, the volcano and the prisoner before you visit so you can appreciate the details. Otherwise you will just see ruins and a small cell made of stone. I for one found this to be an incredible experience. There are no tourist masses, no queues and no entrance fees. You are free to roam and take in history. The place was excavated and then left almost untouched for 100 years. Nowadays it is almost impossible to experience any place of interest in such an authentic way so don't disregard a visit, should you find yourself in St. Pierre.

(Translated by Google) A must-see in Saint-Pierre, steeped in emotion and history. The old prison, and in particular the famous Cyparis dungeon, a rare survivor of the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902, bears poignant witness to the tragedy that struck the town. One is struck by the atmosphere of the place: the stone, the ruins, the oppressive calm... Everything recalls the destructive force of the eruption, but also the resilience of the few who survived. The site is freely accessible and well-maintained, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the place at their own pace. Cyparis's cell is still there, tiny, narrow, and impressive. However, the lack of on-site information is regrettable. There are very few information panels, even though the site has immense historical and educational potential. Information on prison life at the time, the context of the eruption, the identities of the prisoners, or Cyparis's journey after the disaster would have truly enriched the visit. This remains an essential stop in Saint-Pierre, ideally complemented by a visit to the 1902 disaster memorial, the ruins of the old theater, or the CDST (Earth Sciences Discovery Center).

The Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral Church, though currently undergoing repairs, presents a fascinating contrast to the distinct Caribbean features of St. Pierre. It is definitely worth visiting as it holds significant historical value for Martinique and serves as a testament to the immense strength exhibited by the volcano in certain areas. This cathedral showcases remarkable architecture and is an important site that highlights the influence of Catholicism in this region, making it a pleasant destination to explore.

Nestled in the charming town of Saint Pierre, Le 1902 is a delightful boutique that you simply cannot miss. This quaint shop boasts an impressive array of unique, locally handmade items that are both affordable and special. The true gem of this place is its owner, Jean-Yves, whose warm and friendly demeanor instantly makes visitors feel at home. Many travelers have stumbled upon this treasure by chance and left with not just souvenirs but also fond memories of engaging conversations with him.
On a recent visit, my partner and I stumbled across Le 1902 Boutique in Saint Pierre when looking for a public bathroom. Because it was a holiday, the public toilets on the nearby beach were closed as were most businesses nearby. Jean-Yves, the owner of Le 1902 was sympathetic and offered us his private bathroom. He was very welcoming and sweet, asking us about our experiences on the island. Meeting him was a breath of fresh air for us, two transgender people who are queerly read as such, coming from NYC and adapting to a more conservative environment. He gave us sage advice on how to stay safe while traveling. Jean-Yves' boutique is a haven for LGBT+ travelers. My partner and I ended up chatting with him for a long time about his shop which sells souvenirs and art--more than half of which is made by local artists. His prices are VERY reasonable considering the quality of what he is selling, and I would recommend his shop to anyone visiting Martinique. A must see! Jean-Yves is a delight, an angel. Please, please, please visit his shop so that you too can experience his kindness and hospitality.

(Translated by Google) The shop is very cute and offers a number of artisanal products. The manager is very friendly. However, I bought a book in the store, and had the unpleasant surprise of seeing, once I got home, that the price had been increased compared to the original price of the book. This practice has been illegal since the law No. 81-766 of August 10, 1981, known as the Lang law, on the single price of books in France. Regardless of the retailer, the book must be sold at the same price everywhere. I am very disappointed and unfortunately will not be able to return for a refund. Hoping that this was a lack of knowledge of the law and not a deliberate fraudulent act. I haven't heard back over the phone, but I hope prices will be updated soon.

Before closing for lunch, you can quickly visit the Concept store Créole Arts Café and enjoy a tuna dish served with white rice, vegetables, and a puree. It's a simple yet satisfying meal that is not overly salty. If you want to come back in the afternoon with friends, keep in mind that they close at 3 pm like most days. However, their food is original and delicious despite not being prepared on-site (which is quite common in Europe nowadays).

Amazing restaurant with a local beautiful setting. I enjoyed the pleasant welcome by the staff in english. We were told that the house, where the restaurant is located in, is the first built after the eruption of the volcano. As a result, you can experience the vintage vibe inside. The food (we had only desserts) was amazing and also the drinks. Ice coffee or fresh juice is the must! What is more, there is a gallery and a shop right in the restaurant so you can take a look and buy some presents for your friends or family. All in all, if you are a bit hungry and want to refresh yourself in Saint-Pierre, I highly recommend this restaurant!

Le Réservoir 1902 in Martinique offers a unique dining experience that blends delicious local cuisine with an entertaining atmosphere. While it may be on the pricier side, the charm of this establishment lies in its one-man show—where the same individual takes on multiple roles as receptionist, waiter, bartender, and chef. This multitasking talent not only ensures efficient service but also adds a lively touch to your evening. The octopus salad is a standout dish that showcases well-prepared local flavors.
This restaurant was a great surprise. Good local food and drinks. The view is perfect!

The food was good here. I had the Octopus salad. It was well cooked and what I expected based on the cuisine. Service was prompt and friendly. I went in the evening, and they were playing really loud music, and nobody wanted to be anywhere near the speakers, so maybe they should get the hint on that one.

Le Réservoir 1902 in Martinique was a bit on the pricey side for what it was, but it turned out to be a really fun and memorable experience. When we went for dinner, there was just one person running the entire show—he was the receptionist, waiter, bartender, and chef all in one! Not only did he manage it all impressively, but he was also a complete entertainer, making the evening feel more like a performance than just a meal. So while the price may have been a bit steep, I can honestly say we paid for great entertainment as well as some really nice food. If you’re looking for a quirky, lively dining experience with good food and plenty of character, this is definitely a place to check out!

Please dear clients. Martinique is a magnificent Island However, we have been so disapointed by the restaurant le "Reservoir 1902". Because at first you might wait for over one hour to be served, in addition the food is not so traditional and there is no such a great ambiance. That is why we would recommend you to get the Petit Bonhomme instead which is perfect near to the sea with a fascinating view and a traditional ambiance and fresh local food.

Very nice place. Great local food, drinks. Above this, service was the best. Friendly owner and rest of stuff. Highly recommended.

Arrived at 12n but didn't receive food for nearly 2 hours. This is ridiculous. We had to ask twice for our drinks. We get it... You are understaffed. I do NOT recommend this place at all. There are roadside places that are better and more deserving of your money. Food was boring and under seasoned. There will be no next time for us.

Fantastic spot to enjoy good authentic local food with a nice view of the bay. Lots of good selections of meal and drinks. Definitely worth the stop to eat and relax.

Kaï Raymont is a delightful gem that truly captures the essence of Caribbean dining. This family-run establishment offers an authentic and rustic atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to enjoy traditional local cuisine. Guests rave about the freshness and flavor of the dishes, particularly highlighting the perfectly cooked fish and exceptional curry sauce. The warm welcome from the owners adds to the charm, creating a friendly environment where even language barriers are met with kindness and assistance.
Very fresh and flavorful food. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked, and the curry sauce was the best we've had. Ordering was a bit of a challenge with our poor French, but they were very friendly and helpful. Wonderful location, and highly recommended.

All the great reviews are well deserved! Friendly service and amazing food! Truly the best meal we’ve had on Martinique! Order the Chicken Colombo. We’ve had it other places. This was, by far, the BEST!!!!

Everything was a delight from the atmosphere, the place simple decorations but colourful and cosy, the people family who runs the business were warm and kind and lastly the food OMG it was unreal! A 3 course menu at 25€. As a starter we had the accras (the batter was so light I could eat a dozen of those!) and the fried fish called balaou and oh my the seasoning was perfect! For the main we had the poulet boucané (chicken seasoned and grilled) again the seasoning made everything! And the fish thazard both accompanied with local homegrown vegetables they were very flavourful! And for dessert the flan coco and sorbet coco I loved the flan it was not too sweet and very light!
