Le Carbet in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Le Carbet, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Le Carbet is a laid-back seaside town on Martinique’s northwestern coast, known for its dark volcanic sand beaches and views of Mount Pelée. The calm Caribbean waters make it a pleasant spot for swimming, snorkeling, and boat trips. Nearby attractions include the Paul Gauguin Interpretation Centre and Neisson rum distillery, offering a glimpse into the island’s cultural and agricultural heritage. Its location also makes a good base for visiting historic Saint-Pierre and exploring hiking trails in the lush interior.
With favorites like Plage du Carbet, Centre d’Interprétation Paul Gauguin (ancien Musée Gauguin), and Plage De Saint-Pierre, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like L 'Abri Côtier and Restaurant 1643 so you can get the best taste of Le Carbet while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

ZOO Martinique HOUSING LATOUCHE is a charming wildlife park set in a picturesque location, featuring meandering trails and colonial-era ruins. Established in July 2014, it initially served as a botanical garden by Jean-Philippe Thoze before becoming home to numerous animal species such as monkeys, jaguars, birds, pumas, anteaters, and colorful lorikeet parrots.
Surprisingly good zoo for a small Caribbean island. The price is high (€17.50/pp), but it is larger than it looks from the road. Don't expect any large mammals, but they do have two large cats (a black jaguar--I've never seen one before ever--and a puma/cougar) and a variety of monkeys. The grounds are interesting as well, since it is the ruins of a former sugar mill and rum distillery. Some beautiful flowers on the grounds as well. Takes about an hour and a half to two hours to walk through. You can walk here from St. Pierre, but there are some spots where there is little room to walk along the highway. Take the second road in from the beach (not the first one as suggested by Google Maps) for a better/wider sidewalk. Click Helpful below if this review has been of help to you.

Very beautiful zoo. Lots of animals - jaguars, flamingos, crocodiles, parrots etc. However, the cages are way too small for this amount of animals. Not much freedom for them. Otherwise I enjoyed my visit . However, you can buy a ticket for Jardin de Balata and the Zoo just for 2eur difference. This was not mentioned!
Deimanciukas D — Google review
Amazing! It is quite large. Almost 1 hr to complete. The map is very handy. follow it! Staff is friendly. Ask for the ticket that allows you to visit both jardin de balata and the zoo.
Candy C — Google review
Wonderful spot to enjoy the exotic atmosphere of the island and to spend time with the kids.
Natalia L — Google review
Great little zoo in the ruins of an old rum distillery. Entrance fee is 17,5 euros. They have signs in French and English. Cool little exhibit on pirates at the end as well.
Alvin H — Google review
A great place to take the kids when visiting Martinique ! The zoo is well maintained…
Sania A — Google review
The zoo is an excellent attraction for families in the area. The grounds, wow, the park is located in a tight Valley and they worked there enclosures within the ruins of Saint Pierre. There is a wide variety of animals, but become they a more free to roam in larger enclosures they can be difficult to see sometimes. But honestly the most impressive thing is the landscaping. Incredible. Worth to the visit!
Jonathan J — Google review
What a great zoo, was surprised by the amount of different animals actually on show , it's set in beautiful landscape , it reminds me of Jurassic park and you half expected a t rex to come bursting through the rainforest , it was a organised trip while on a cruise , just wish I could have stayed longer

Plage De Saint-Pierre is a stunning public beach located on the picturesque island of Martinique. With its inviting gray sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, it offers an ideal spot for relaxation and swimming. The sandy seabed makes it perfect for those looking to enjoy a refreshing dip or snorkel among vibrant marine life. (Translated by Google) Saint Pierre beach really great, we were on the opposite side to the sculptures in the water, that is to say at the northern end of the beach. And we were served snorkeling level with a lot of fish, next to the plastic pontoon where the locals fish. Small fish by the thousands (no exaggeration) during our visits due to the presence of bait left at the bottom of the water by fishermen. The decor and the mountain in the background complete the picture.

The Centre d’Interprétation Paul Gauguin, formerly known as Musée Gauguin, is a small museum located at Anse-Turin that offers a detailed look into the 19th-century stay of artist Paul Gauguin on Martinique and its influence on his art. The center showcases Gauguin's Martinique work, providing an opportunity to explore the artist's journey and evolution in his art.
Excellent visit. The lady at the reception desk gave us a fantastic resume of Gauguin and the context of his visit to Martinique and it influence on him as a painter. Many thanks

Ondrej B — Google review
It is a small museum, but full of interesting facts and stories. I've never knew about Gaugin's stay in Martinique, but obviously there was a big influence in his art. The sketches, the stories behind are pretty well organized. I found the building itself a little weirdly chosen for an impresionist, but well.. There is a parking at the place, just you have to leave the main street and drive below the bridge. Google location drove us to a residential complex, but the museum is rather below, across the beach.

(Translated by Google) A wonderful experience at the Gauguin Interpretation Center! The welcome was excellent: the woman at the entrance captured our attention from the start with clear and fascinating explanations about Gauguin's life and work. This really piqued our curiosity before we explored the exhibition at our own pace. The exhibition, although relatively short, is rich, colorful, and very well thought-out. We left with lots of new insights. A pleasant, informative, and accessible visit. I highly recommend it! 🌺 (Original) Très belle expérience au Centre d’interprétation Gauguin ! Plage du Carbet

Plage du Carbet is a lively and superb beach located in the northern part of Martinique. It's part of an exciting excursion that includes visits to various attractions such as Cathedrale Sacree-Coeur de Balata, Riviere Cascade Absalon, Jardin Botanique et Musee Naturel Domaine d'Emeraude, and Distillerie de Rhum Depaz for a tasting experience.
(Translated by Google) Carbet beach, located on the northwest coast of Martinique, is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It is distinguished by its gray, soft and fine volcanic sand, which gives it a unique atmosphere, different from the white sand beaches of the south. Bordered by coconut and almond trees, it offers an exceptional natural setting where sea and mountains mingle. From the beach, the view is spectacular: on one side, you can admire the calm and crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, while on the other, the majestic Mount Pelée dominates the horizon, creating a striking contrast between the blue of the ocean and the deep green of the reliefs. This combination of landscapes makes it a perfect place for swimming, relaxing or even walking by the sea. Very popular with locals and tourists alike, Carbet beach is also a lively place, with several restaurants and beach bars offering Creole specialties and exotic cocktails. It is also known for its magnificent sunsets, which tint the sky red and gold, offering an unforgettable natural spectacle. An essential place to enjoy the authentic charm of Martinique.

I arrived at L 'Abri Côtier a bit later than usual, around 2pm, after work. Despite the delay, I still managed to have a delightful lunch on a Monday. The service was exceptional and speedy, allowing me to enjoy my meal without any delays. Initially, I had planned to take a swim in between courses, but the food arrived promptly one after another - even the appetizer appeared before my drink!
Friendly staff & Food was delicious. We didn’t know Kitchen close at 3pm, we arrived around 3:20pm, the staff was very helpful & offered us some light food, we really appreciated it

I get off from work a lil late, around 2pm and still got the chance to lunch on a Monday. It was fantastic and fast. Planned to get a swim in between dishes but every dishes came quick, even the starter came before the drink. Wonderful time with the crew, they camw around often to check if your experience was good. My belly thanks you for the delicious food. Cheers

We visited L'Abri Cotier twice during our 10 day stay in Martinique. It is across the street from the Gaugin museum on the beach. A server at the Depaz Rum Distillery recommended it when we stopped by the first time we visited San Pierre and we stopped by again after visiting Plage Anse Ceron a bit to the north. The two ladies that served us were lovely and attentive. One spoke very good English. The other staff/bartender was very nice as well. The food was great during our first dinner as were the passion fruit versions of the caipirinha. They had stopped serving food (shut down the fryer) on our second stop by but served us Marlin ceviche and Avocado ceviche (not as good but OK) anyway which was super nice of them because we were starving! I had a non-alcoholic papaya fruit juice drink which they make fresh and was excellent. They also have frozen treats available like popsicles and such. I'll be honest it was difficult for us as Americans to understand the limited hours of restaurants on this island and just because they are listed as "open" does not mean you can get food! Most days we ate just one meal and relied on grocery stores for the rest because of this reality that we experienced all over the island. Realize that this restaurant is right on the beach so there is no restroom! There are port-o-lets a short walk away but they are not superb lol and you'll need your own TP! Parking on the street was easy, but it's a busy road so be careful if crossing.

Best restaurant on Martinique, great multilanguage owner. Menu on tablet, you can see picture and ingredients of your meal, if we have more time in Saint-Pierre we will visit it every day, lot of meals we would like to try. Of course superb coctails. Good job, wish you a lot of great customers.

Excellent address! We visited in early March with my wife and 3 kids and all had a great time. The team and owner are very nice and will take the time to go through the menu with you and discuss what their restaurant is about. The cocktails and the food are not just excellent, they're also creative and very well presented. Add a very pleasant atmosphere to this and you get a restaurant you have to visit ;-)

I was a little hesitant to eat here based on the food photos. The portions looked small, and the presentation was a little over the top. I am so happy I didn't give in to my fears! An appetizer and a main course were enough for this big guy, and I still had room for a few bites of desert. Nice, affordable wine options. My duck was delicious and perfectly cooked. We all loved our meals, and the plating was appropriate for the meal. And even though they were busy on a Thursday night, we felt welcome and well attended by the server. For reference we had pre dinner drinks, 2 bottles of water, appetizers for 4, 4 main plates, 2 deserts, one of the most expensive bottles of wine, +2 individual wine glasses, 2 deserts for about 75 euros each which we were happy with since the quality was so high and this was our trip splurge. Thank you for an amazing island dining experience.

Best restaurant we've eaten at so far, both the food and atmosphere aspects. Located next to the zoo and set back from the road it's peaceful and quiet. The staff were friendly and welcoming even for us as English speaking patrons who spoke a moderate amount of french with some help. Their menus are electronic in the form of kindles that appear to have 5 o6 language translations. We are returning tomorrow for another meal there because it was so good! Highly recommend!!

Saw the review and arrived half an hour early to ensure we have a table and do not have to wait too long. It was worth the wait. We ordered all the seafood, grilled marlin, fried snapper, grilled lambi and best of all the shrimp. The food arrive promptly, cooked well and very delicious especially with the local sauce for the seafood.

A very nice place to eat, right on the beach. A very nice atmosphere in the restaurant if you come before the place starts to fill up. Incredibly tasty dishes (both starters and mains) and the portios sizes are particularly large! You're sure not to be hungry after you leave! The staff is very friendly and prompt. Minus one star for the fact that, once the place is filled up, you start seeing considerable delays for ordering/receiving what you ordered. Definitely recommended!
