Dolores Hidalgo in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Dolores Hidalgo, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Dolores Hidalgo is celebrated as the “Cradle of Mexican Independence,” where Miguel Hidalgo issued the 1810 call to revolt, and its historic center is filled with churches, plazas, and museums tied to that moment. Visitors can explore the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, stroll cobblestone streets lined with colonial architecture, and see monuments honoring national heroes. The town is also known for its colorful Talavera-style ceramics, sold in countless workshops and stores. Nearby vineyards and countryside add options for wine tasting and scenic day trips.
With favorites like Son of the Sad Night Tree, Fonda Santa Patria, and Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Rincon 28, Pizza & Grill and El Pollo Sabroso so you can get the best taste of Dolores Hidalgo while you’re here. Cool place if your into Art. We stopped by to check it out. Free to get in. Pretty big inside to look around. Lots of art to buy.
Jose S — Google review
If you are a fan of the singer this is a must see as they have about a 10-mins "immersive experience" as you walk in which is just terrific, that goes through his catalog of music and the titles and songs are explained. This is beautiful for everyone. The guide-less tour of the home is short, but very nice. Definitely worth going in, prior to the mausoleum bus tour.

If you like Jose Alfredo Jimenez, then you will enjoy this museum with original telegrams and clothing. Awesome stuff.

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores is a historic church located in the heart of Dolores Hidalgo. This magnificent building holds great significance as it was the site where Hidalgo delivered his famous Grito, marking the beginning of Mexico's fight for independence. The church's stunning architecture, adorned with intricate details made of cantera, showcases a blend of baroque churrigueresque style.
Magnificent architecture! You can see bullet holes from a long time ago engraved in the front of the building. The inside is incredible and the design of this place is breath taking. So much history to be learned from this place. This is where Mexico fought for its independence long ago. The Cry of Dolores or “Grito de Dolores”, was when a priest rang the bells and triggered the start of the Mexican war on September 16, 1810.
David M — Google review
I recently visited Dolores Hidalgo that had a beautiful church called Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores. The church was located near a lovely plaza in the center of town. It was a quick stop for me before I headed to San Miguel de Allende. The town had a charming atmosphere and I enjoyed my short stay there.

Dolores hidalgo Is known as "la cuna de la independencia" or the cradle of Independence. This church is probably one of the more popular ones due to its importance in Mexican history.

Start of Independence for Mexico, great place to walk a little and take some pictures of the parish church.
Pedro A — Google review
It is a very large and well-preserved church. Walking through its corridors, one can see the care and maintenance dedicated to keeping it in such a great state. It's one of the most ostentatious churches I have seen while visiting Mexico.
Erick V — Google review
This beautiful church stands tall among the local buildings. Please keep an eye out for the intricate details found on the front facade, which are made of cantera. Construction first began in 1712, and three centuries later it still remains as a prime example of baroque churrigueresque style. Upon entering the facilities, gaze up to the ceiling and you will discover a taste of centuries past.
Vidal R — Google review
Magnificent Parroquia de Nuestra Senora marking the birthplace of the Mexican Revolution against Spain in September of 1810. Father Hidalgo made his famous call to war to the local population on this plaza. After over a decade of bloodshed the costly conflict gave way to Freedom for Mexico in 1821.
How Y — Google review
A beautiful church, and since it's facing the main plaza, you can have some of Dolores Hidalgo's famous ice cream at the outdoor stands there after your visit. This church figured in the Mexican independence movement; there are several interesting, inexpensive museums a few paces away.

The Museo del Bicentenario in Dolores Hidalgo is a highly recommended museum, particularly for those who enjoy visiting intimate and peaceful exhibition spaces. It offers an interactive area suitable for group visits with friends or family. This museum stands out as an excellent option if you prefer smaller venues that provide a relaxed atmosphere.
My favorite Dolores Hidalgo museum, there is an interactive room if you want to go with friends or family, if you like to visit small quiet museums this is a great option.

Very small museum just a couple of rooms. There are different art exhibitions through the year. Just to one side of the main church of the city in an old building. Tjere is also a permanent exhibition of pottery traditional of the region and part of the lical tradition.

(Translated by Google) The Bicentennial Museum is located in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, a key site in Mexican history. Unlike other museums in the area that focus on the beginning of the War of Independence, this museum has a very particular focus: commemorating the first centennial of Mexico's independence in 1910. Collection and Featured Exhibits The museum houses a collection of more than 800 pieces that were part of the grand celebrations organized during the Porfirio Díaz administration. Its collection includes: * Centennial Paraphernalia: A wide variety of commemorative objects from the era, such as jewelry, weapons, portraits, uniforms, and everyday items (spoons, cigarette packs, matches, knives) that illustrate how the event was celebrated. * Historical Documents: The original program of the celebrations and the menu from the Centennial dinner hosted by Porfirio Díaz are on display. * Multimedia Space: Features interactive areas, including an original conversation between Porfirio Díaz and Thomas Alva Edison, offering a glimpse into the technology and figures of the era. * Photo Library: A collection of photographs on the Industrial Revolution, post-revolutionary Mexico, and the Alhóndiga de Granaditas photo archive. Visitor Experience The museum offers a unique perspective on a crucial moment in history: the contrast between the lavish Centennial celebrations and the imminent Mexican Revolution. It is an ideal place to understand the political and social context that preceded the fall of the Porfirio Díaz dictatorship. * Hours: Generally open Monday through Sunday. * Admission Fee: Usually has a very affordable general admission fee and discounts for students, teachers, and seniors (INAPAM). If you are looking to learn in depth how the first centennial of Independence was commemorated, and see the opulence and details of life at the beginning of the 20th century, the Bicentennial Museum is a highly interesting and educational visit in Dolores Hidalgo.

Once a residence for notable figures during Mexico's independence celebrations, it now serves as accommodation for dignitaries visiting the city on September 16th to witness the Grito de Independencia.

Here we can take a tour of the place where the Father of the Nation lived from 1804-1810; We have the kitchen, the dining room, an urn with the remains of General Pedro García, personal objects of the Priest (such as his glasses), etc. Dolores' house is also known as “Little France”, because inside, as was done in France, gatherings were organized that promoted freedom of thought. In 1863, it was declared National Heritage by former president Benito Juárez. (Original) La experiencia de conocer Dolores Hidalgo es única e inolvidable. We had a fantastic lunch at the Cuna de Tierra Restaurant! The setting is just what you are after when eating in a vineyard, vines all around, fantastic shady table under a tree and a knowledgeable sommelier that can recommend pairings from the a la carte menu. The food is also excellent, with Mexican and more European dishes available. Thanks to Antonio and the team for a wonderful experience!! And let’s not forget the stars of the show, the wines are fantastic with a wide range by the glass too

We spent an exceptional afternoon at Cuna de Tierra learning about the wine and the history of the region. Our host Paco was knowledgeable, gracious, engaging, humorous and clearly passionate about the importance of this growing wine region. We opted to have the four course lunch paired with four very nice wines. Pairing on 3 of the 4 were spot on, my wife believed all four were perfect. Lunch was served under a covered terrace overlooking the vineyard. The chef explained the food and preparation for each dish. The food was exceptional as was the wine, the hospitality was equally memorable. We will be enjoying the wine we brought home with fond memories of our afternoon at the vineyard.

(photos are from one of my "happier restaurant visits" I am going to leave them there.) I'm going to give this place a long time to figure out if they need my business. Yesterday, I bought 3 milanesa empanizada plates to go, and an extra salad. It cost me almost $340 pesos. Meanwhile I bought 1 kilo (they always make it 1.1 kilos when you order 1 kilo) of raw chicken breast and 1.5 kilos (they automatically measure out 1.6 or 1.7 kilos when you order 1.5 kilos) of legs and thighs in their polleria room on the side. I spent well over $700 pesos for chicken and chicken dinners, which makes 3 days of food for us, which in today's inflation climate is a lot of money. I had to go out and buy more food. My dogs got a very expensive guiso. I walked back to my vehicle and put the cold chicken in a new, very efficient, high grade insulated cooler bag. Then I drove STRAIGHT HOME. No side trips to anywhere else. We opened the cooler bag and all the chicken had a rotten smell in it, in 20 minutes from time of purchase to time of opening the package. Which means, they sold it to me BAD. None of the salads were any good. They ought to know better than to put cold salads and hot food in the same container. Even the "fresh" salad was a little rotten. They're not taking measures to deal with the 38° summer heat. Sure these are hot temperatures in these summer days. But that's not an excuse to sell rotten food. That's an opportunity to "UP YOUR GAME' to meet safety requirements so your customers don't get sick and end up in the hospital. I will wait a year before I go back. Freshness of raw chicken had always been an issue at any of their locations. Earlier this year, I came in to talk to the owner lady that they do not use ice to keep the chicken cold at the Avenida Sur location by Pollo Sabroso. I have not returned to that location, since. But until my last purchase there, on the final 4 visits, the chicken smelled bad the moment I opened the bag. Which means, they sold it to us bad. On my visit to the main location a few months ago, I stopped to tell the owner that the chicken in that Avenida Sur location was bad because they fail to use ice. The owner accused me of not keeping the chicken cool on my way home. She tried to turn it around on me, saying it was my fault. Then the last time I went there, HER chicken was bad. Can't blame that on me. Yesterday, I was buying food for my extended family, that I now have to turn it into dog food for my guard dogs. The workers had no ice on any of the chicken and it was not cold. Cool, yes, but not cold. Nothing looked good, and there was a little bit of bad smell in the polleria. Just like I gave a famous nearby pizza place in downtown an extended "5 year break" from business when they tried to steal my credit card information, I am giving Pollo Sabroso a 1 year break because they knowingly sell bad chicken, and they lie about it when you hold them accountable. Bye, for awhile.

This is my 3rd review. Pollo Sabroso consistently deletes negative reviews to falsely maintain a fake high rating. This is not a good way to conduct business. It will ultimately end in their business failing when the public abandons them for their own reasons. My last review had to do with a young male employee "making eyes" at me. I know I'm not extremely handsome, but my wife liked me enough to marry me. Having a male employee stare at me like he wants to go to bed with me... nope. Not having it. That was about 2 weeks ago. Yesterday, I bought chicken from the polleria side that I carried home in a very good insulated container. It STUNK LIKE IT WAS ROTTEN when I got home 20 minutes later. It will make good food for my big guard dogs, nothing more.

The food is plentyful but doesn't seem properly seasoned. Guacamole appetizer seemed brownish, the server removed it from the bill. Good but bland.

(Translated by Google) The dishes, in addition to being delicious, are very generous, the quality-price ratio is excellent, I think it is worth every penny of what you pay, the guacamole is unbeatable, the dishes smell delicious and that is only the prelude to its flavor, frankly it is one One of the best chicken restaurants if we talk about flavor, the facilities are barely sufficient, but if you don't care about the place and the flavor, you will love it. The pe au gratin is 100% recommended.

Mexican restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Dolores Hidalgo, Fonda Santa Patria is a charming eatery that captures the essence of Mexican culture. The interior boasts a cozy ambiance, while the terrace offers a pleasant spot to enjoy your meal. Diners rave about the delicious food, including a mixed platter featuring flank steak and marinated Cecina paired with chorizo, nopales, and guacamole—though some found the guacamole slightly onion-heavy.
Nice, clean, cozy. Food was great. Freshly made. Reasonable.

(Translated by Google) The place is very nice inside but the terrace was not the best, the food was good as were the prices. We ordered a mixed plank of flank steak with marinated Cecina, it came accompanied by chorizo, with nopales and guacamole, the guacamole had too much onion for my taste. Tortillas and sauces. But the taste of the meat was very good, it's perfect oars to share between 2 people. It has more typical Mexican dishes and the concept of the place is very original with a Mexican theme. I leave the menu in the photos. :)

Nestled in the heart of Dolores Hidalgo, El Carruaje Restaurante is a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in authentic Mexican cuisine. Located conveniently by the main plaza, this charming eatery offers a delightful atmosphere that perfectly complements its delicious menu. Diners rave about the flavorful dishes, with highlights including the rich Crema de Queso soup infused with chipotle and the hearty Carruaje Molcajete, which boasts an ample serving of meat ideal for sharing.
Nice place, with a nice atmosphere. Service is good although feels they are overwhelmed by the amount of customers. The buffet is the choice if you want something cheap, simple but still delicious. Food is good. The Crema de Queso (Cheese Cream soup) is a must, specially the one with Chipotle chili. The Carruaje Molcajete has a good amount of meat, serves one and a half people.

Please stay away from here. We arrived at this EMPTY restaurant and it took about 20 minutes for our waitress to take our drink and food orders. It took an hour for bread and butter to be delivered to our tables. We figured it was because our group was large and hoped the food was going to be worth it. After another 40 minutes our food arrived already cold. The stuffed shrimp order came with 4 undercooked shrimps wrapped in bacon and the enchiladas looked pitiful. The molcajete was delicious but not worth it.
