Mazunte in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Mazunte, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Mazunte is a small Pacific coastal town known for its relaxed atmosphere, sandy beaches and strong focus on ecotourism. It’s home to the Mexican National Turtle Center and nearby beaches where sea turtles commonly nest, making it a notable spot for wildlife observation. Many visitors come for yoga retreats, simple beachside cabanas and swimming or surfing in relatively low-key surroundings. Sunset views from Punta Cometa, a rocky promontory just outside town, are one of the area’s most famous attractions.
With favorites like Rinconcito, Siddharta, and Playa Mazunte, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like El Pescador and Siddharta so you can get the best taste of Mazunte while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Beaches
Mazunte Beach is a remote beach in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, with four different beaches each offering a unique experience. Playa Mazunte is recommended for a relaxing day of sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying Mexican food. The left-hand side of the beach is quieter and offers parasols for rent. It's important to note that the waves at Mazunte Beach are strong and not suitable for children, making it a popular spot for surfers.
The beach is spectacular with little waves, ideal for swimming. The turquoise blue water allows you to swim and interact with fish, whales, and dolphins. You can bring your pet unlike other beaches in the area.
Sol A — Google review
Beautiful beach with rocky outcrops you can sit on. My 6 year old loved to play in the shallows but my two year old was scared of the waves.
Marika H — Google review
I went there two weeks after the storm hit And you could tell the ocean was still cleaning itself. I didn’t feel comfortable getting in the water, the currents and Webers were very unpredictable. Also a wonder if one of the restaurants mentioned that some ppl had drowned lately. However I had planned to stay for a week, and I did but to be honest, I don’t know why I stayed all this time. I can’t say I enjoyed it so much. I often meditated on a big rock at the beach and that was nice. Not sure I’ll be back
Claudia T — Google review
Amazing!! Good food and a beautiful beach! The town of Mazunte occupies a small bay to the east of the Punta Cometa peninsula. The majority of restaurants, shops and yoga studios lie alongside the main road (route 175) or Mazunte’s busiest street, Rinconcito, which runs perpendicular to the beach. I love this place!
Coucai — Google review
Super chill beach. I loved it. It's quiet not to many people. The waves don't pick up until 12 and settle down around 1600. 100% recommend
Kai C — Google review
One of my favorite beaches on the Puerto Escondido coast. This beach is great because you can really swim here and it is filtered with lots of sun and rock formations that are easy on the eye. There are lots of places to shop and get food and while the restaurant lounge options are limited they are there if you come early to get a seat. The waves are nice and the sand is lovely. It’s dust Next to Zolita and adjacent beaches so there’s lots to see and do in this area.
Heather A — Google review
One of the best beaches in the area. Great for walking and running, with good waves to do surfing, and a really nice cove for swimming and snorkeling. The only reason for not 5 stars is that you are competing with the locals that are fishing in the same cove. There can easily be up to 10 people fishing in the small cove (not sure how long they are going to still have fish there). I would not recommend swimming/snorkeling at the same time all the fishing is happening. Also, be careful of the currents where the surfing waves are, 2 people had to be rescued in the 4 days we were there.

Rinconcito

Beach
Rinconcito is a protected cove located at the west end of Playa Mazunte, offering calmer waters and making it the best swimming beach in Mazunte. It's easily accessible from the town, with a few restaurants and low-key beach bars lining the sands. The area can be reached by taking a bumpy 20-minute drive to the town of Mazunte and then heading uphill on El Rinconcito street.
Lovely beach if you like them without a lot of people. There is no free shade, but you can rent a spot if needed. Sometimes there are pelicans swimming in the waves, which I thought was pretty cool, and there are plenty of spots nearby for a quick bite.
Ruud — Google review
Chill beach with big waves but passable for swimming. The smell of weed from every angle only adds to the vibe :)
Paweł K — Google review
Wonderful Beach. Lot is sand, fresh water, hotels and restaurants. 15 minute walk to Punta Cometa.
Mirko — Google review
Great beach for swimming, lounging, and playing in mellow waves. I visited over New Year's and it was somewhat crowded but never insane. Pretty much anytime other than christmas/new year's/semana santa I imagine it would be perfect. Can rent and an umbrella and 2 chairs for about 200 mxn/day with some negotiating. Good amount of vendors selling tamales, tacos dorados, ice cream, etc but never felt like they were harassing or anything.
Kevin K — Google review
8/10 - I may visit again. Summary suggestion: Visit if you like the sound of waves while you rest on your blanket and read. The beach and waves are lovely to watch. The intensity of the waves limits the swimming area to a corner of the beach. Although the pictures can look like the beach area is very large to lay out your blanket and enjoy the water, the total area for swimming is not large.
Aaron Y — Google review
In my perspective, it is the best spot to swim and enjoy the beach.
Gustavo R — Google review
Beautiful but more people than playa Mermejita
Johannes H — Google review
Overrated, if you want to swim quietly it is not the place because if you start to walk on the beach they are coming to you and try to sell umbrellas or chairs to sit. Not a clean beach also and full of street dogs. Also expensive!

Cafe
Ícaro Café in Mazunte is a remarkable establishment that offers a delightful range of treats, including banana bread and brownies. It is renowned as the best café in the area, with its offerings being highly sought after by locals and tourists alike. To ensure you secure your desired treats, it is advisable to arrive early as their stock tends to sell out within an hour. The charming ambiance of this café adds to its appeal, with patrons enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and tastefully decorated surroundings.
Amazing place with phenomenally great pastries and very good coffee and other drinks. Very lovely, laidback atmosphere — exactly what you need in the morning. Friendly and attentive staff. But you gotta be early to get any pastries — often sold out by 9:15.
Arseny K — Google review
This tropical little gem is about to expand and if you go there you’ll know exactly why. The atmosphere is tranquil and inviting. The owners work hard to make you feel special, calling you by name, remembering your order even with the hundreds of people who come & go each week. The food is fresh and amazing. Presentation is beautiful. Service is always with a smile. Ícaro is a must visit for a coffee lover or chocolate lovers alike. Don’t miss the CHOCOLATE CROISSANT… get there early, they sell out!
Megan T — Google review
This place is a real gem — and the morning lineup goes to show it! We came by this morning and had a wonderfully rich mocha, as well as a flavourful espresso. The atmosphere is great: fun, warm, and vibrant. The service is terrific for those very same reasons! Plenty of books available to borrow/leave, which always brings a smile to my face :) They’re known for their pastries, which we didn’t get, but boy oh boy did the pain au chocolat look heavenly..
Gemma B — Google review
A hidden gem in Mazunte! Ícaro Café is the perfect spot for a peaceful brunch or a relaxing coffee break. The atmosphere is calm and charming, surrounded by nature and cozy seating areas like hammocks and hanging chairs. Their pastries are absolutely delicious – especially the chocolatín, which is as good as anything you’d find in Paris. The coffee is rich and flavorful, and the staff is friendly and welcoming. It’s a must-visit if you’re in Mazunte – but get there early for the freshest selection
Cami — Google review
Very nice outdoor seating, off a quiet street close to the beach. Surprisingly some of the best French pastries I’ve tasted outside France. A bit more expensive than some of the other places around but also very good food/drinks. Friendly (domesticated) dog hanging around. Payment by PayPal is possible.
J F — Google review
Had breakfast here three days in a row. Beautiful little breakfast place with delicious food. Avocado toast is amazing and you have to try their pan de almendra which arrives every morning fresh from the bakery.
Stan R — Google review
A very nice little cafe tucked away. The avocado and humus toast was delicious and super fresh

LOVED the epic vibe at this adorable cafe. All the details are perfection. Great coffee and beautifully made local cacao, which all come in handmade ceramics shaped like hearts or faces. There’s colorful decor, incredible baked goods (they go quick so get in early!), and wonderful service in this tiny, hidden spot. What a gem 💎🙏

Restaurant
El Pescador, a beachfront eatery, offers exquisite dining experiences with a variety of delectable dishes. The menu features garlic shrimp along with complementary sides like chips, salad, and rice. The options are influenced by the availability of fresh ingredients, particularly fish. The generous portions and attentive service contribute to the overall satisfaction of patrons. Furthermore, the stunning ocean view adds an unbeatable ambiance to one's dining experience at El Pescador.
We were on the hunt for a restaurant on this beach and after talking to some guests who had just eaten here we decided to sit and enjoy a meal. It was so delicious, we came back the next night too! The owner/ chef is delightful and knows how to cook prawns and hamburgers to perfection.
Gemma J — Google review
The worst cocktail I have ever tasted.....we ordered 2for1 on passion fruit margs. This green monstrosity arrived. Wouldn't of bothered me if it had some alcohol in it and tasted nice. It was like a glass of dish soap with a hint of passion fruit syrup. We complained, the guy went to 'fix' the drinks, which apparently had blue Curacao in them for some reason...brought them back unchanged in a different glass. Moral of the story is if you want to sit on their nice red chairs, stuck to the beers.
Caleb W — Google review
Pretty excellent spot to post up at day at Mazunte. There’s a minimum spend of about $200 pesos. The food and drink are decent, better than most beach spots but the service was slow due to a busy section and only one server. Good place to swim.
Heather A — Google review
Delicious fresh grilled whole snapper. We also tried the stuffed avocado w shrimp and it was amazing. We prefer to spend our beach day at Playa Rinconcito, but this place is worth the 3 min walk over to Playa Mazunte for lunch.
Matt H — Google review
This restaurant on the beach is just DIVINE! We had the garlic shrimp - all of the dishes come with chips, salad & rice. Options are based on what is available - especially fish as it’s whatever is fresh that day. Portions were amazing, the service was wonderful and the view is unbeatable. Definitely go here!!
Laura-Jane M — Google review
My glass wasn't washed- it had lipstick on it. Frappe iced drinks weren't blended. Bland food. Worst of all, the fabric overhead to block out the sun looks solid from a distance, but you can see the sun right through it when you're close. It lets sunlight through and maybe even the plastic acts as a lens to magnify it. We were burned to a crisp, thinking we were protected. We saw the same thing happen to another unsuspecting couple. Two other days we were at the place right next to it (first place on the beach. Closest to the rocks.) Which has really good food (the best we had in Mazunte) and thick umbrellas for solid shade. Go to the first place, not El Pescador!
Heidi L — Google review
Highly recommended. During our month in Mazunte we were here six times. Fantastic, personal service. Always great, authentic food. Best spot on the beach to chill all day and sometimes even late into the night.

Restaurant
Siddharta is a restaurant with an unbeatable view and delicious food. While the owner is friendly, some of the staff members were unwelcoming, which affected the overall experience for some visitors. The prices are a bit high, but the unique menu offerings like pasta and fish steak make it worth it. The cocktails are also highly recommended. The service could be better, but it's in line with the laid-back atmosphere of Mazunte.
Great drinks and food. Also really good musicians jamming each night I've been there. A nice, chill vibe right on the beach in Mazunte.
Alex H — Google review
A little pricey but one of the few restaurants that go out of the ordinary food. We had pasta and fish steak that was out of this world. Cocktails were also great. Service could improve but only as much as you would expect from an alternative type of town Mazunte is.
RRT — Google review
The food was not bad, but then I found a piece of glass in my mouth from the food, they gave us a 25% discount for the inconvenience, really hope this is just an isolated incident. Manager was very sorry about it. Other than that liked guacamole
Cecilio O — Google review
Always loved it here. Looks great after reopening but menu can use some changing for legibility and accessibility. Will make more $ with easy-to-read menu that’s visually inviting; for example, the pasta section, it’s options for meat or no, and the seafood plates can use a better format & explanation. Mezcal both tobalá and espadín good tasting but is not 45-55% alcohol (therefore not the authentic double distillation process) but good nonetheless. Plate arrived with smal amount of potatoes... probably less than a whole potato which I can buy and fry on my own for 1peso 🤷🏽‍♂️ all good but you can do better guys. It’s Mazunte and quality matters in 2020 💚 all the best to you guys, great and friendly staff!
A2 — Google review
This place is great! I went twice while I was there for a few days. The view can’t be beat and the food is delicious 🤤 the guy owner was friendly but his staff of young women aren’t so much. They made us feel very unwelcomed. That’s enough for me to bring it down one star. Otherwise I’d give it 5!
Lyndsey K — Google review
They cover uncleaned shimps with mayonnaise.... How on earth is one supposed to eat it? Green veggies as an option for bowl is just salad. Cucumber is bitter. Food not made with love but frustration.
Taavi T — Google review
We just stopped here for a beer. It was alright. Not a lot of atmosphere but a lot of other places had already closed for the night. It is right on the beach and has nice views out across the bay.
Henry H — Google review
I should have known when I sat a table for 10-15 minutes without anyone acknowledging my presence (in a basically empty restaurant) that I was in the wrong place. When the waitress bothered to come and take my order I asked a few questions and ordered a cocktail and the fish of the day (tuna) which was relatively pricey and then waited and waited and waited. My cocktail came and went and still I waited for a hour or more for my food. I watched as another table who had arrived after me was served their food and who actually finished their meal before I even got my lunch. I had to ask the waitress if it was even still coming at one point and she simply waved yes without bothering to explain why it was taking so long. In fact, she never really came back to my table at all. A much nicer mesero brought me both my drink and my food. Speaking of which, when the tuna finally arrived it was so dry and over cooked that it had very little flavor at all. I was so hungry at this point that I ate it anyway. Very very disappointed in the food and at the way I was treated and I would not recommend this place to anyone at all. I've been a waitress in many different countries and this was by far the worst service I've ever received. I left without leaving a tip - and I NEVER do that.

Mexican restaurant
Doña Meche is a popular restaurant in Mazunte, known for its delicious dorado shrimp tacos and traditional Oaxacan food. The veal head tacos from Guadalajara are also highly recommended. The prices are standard and the takeout tlayuda window offers affordable options. The restaurant features live music, but the service can be slow when the place is full.
Our taxi driver recommended this place for traditional Oaxacan food, and it did not disappoint! The mole was delicious (wish I got a picture) and the tlayuda was delicious as well. Great prices and service as well.

Delicious! I had the Enchiladas con huevos & my Adventure Partner had the Huevos Divorciada. Both were amazing. Be prepared for a wait on the food preparation because they make everything fresh. It's well worth the wait!

While this looks like a classic place to eat, the food is bad. And there are just too many other places with far better options 100 ft in either direction.
David A — Google review
Not good. Service was poor and food was worse. Ordered grilled octopus, chicken tostadas and chicken milanese. Octopus was tender, but completely tasteless. No salt, pepper nor limes. Just bland as could be. Salad is 90% iceberg with no dressing. Tostadas were ok. Chicken milanese came as beef milanese. Not good, just grease and salt. Lame.
Scott B — Google review
Service of fish of the day plancha was very slow (took nearly one hour) then not worth the wait. Prawn tacos were deep fried with 1000 island dressing and lettuce on top. I would not recommend this place.
Robert H — Google review
Pretty good food and pretty standard prices. They have a takeout tlayuda window at night and each tlayuda costs around 100 mxn. Different musicians come through a play. Some are amazing and some are pretty bad. Thankfully the keep the walking street vendors from entering. Service was a bit slow, seems like they need another waiter when the place is full.
Kevin K — Google review
The worst meal we have eaten in Mexico. Ordered the menu del día. The soup entree was literally was just rice sitting in oily water (the same rice that was served with the main meal). Main meal chicken portion was tiny, tasted burnt and other than that was flavourless. Service was slow and rude. We took a look into the kitchen and it was filthy.
