Cromwell in 4 days

If you only have 4 days to spend in Cromwell, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Cromwell offers a blend of gold-mining heritage and lakeside scenery, with its restored Old Cromwell Precinct showcasing historic buildings relocated before the Clyde Dam flooded the original town center. Set beside Lake Dunstan and near the Kawarau and Clutha rivers, it’s popular for boating, fishing and other water activities. The surrounding region is known for vineyards producing acclaimed Central Otago pinot noir and for orchards where you can sample stone fruit in season. Cromwell also serves as a handy base for exploring nearby cycling trails, including sections of the Lake Dunstan Trail and the Otago Central Rail Trail.
With favorites like Cromwell Heritage Precinct, Moorings Restaurant, and Highlands Motorsport Park, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Souvlaki & Kebab Grill and Pinot Junction so you can get the best taste of Cromwell while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Heritage Precinct museum in New Zealand showcases restored buildings from the Gold Rush era of the 1860s, which now house shops and cafes. It offers a chance to reflect on early European history while exploring horse stables and enjoying picnics near Lake Dunstan's seating areas. There are vintage equipment displays, bakeries, and life-sized mannequins that add to the experience. The spot is also ideal for food and drinks with a stunning view of the lake.
It's a lovely spot for a break when you are on your way to somewhere from Queenstown or if you are in cromwell. It's like a walk down the memory lane with historical displays open for you to explore on a beautiful lakeside. The cafe here served some delicious cakes and coffee.
Prerna V — Google review
Great explore to what people used to have back then. Impressed by the estates being preserved. Attendants at the shops open were welcoming and helpful. Definitely worth the trip.
Andrew C — Google review
Interesting place to stop and stretch your legs. Small gold fields style town buildings with most that you can explore inside. The whole town sits on the banks of Lake Dunstan so can be a very scenic lunch or coffee stop
Murray L — Google review
A selection of old town buildings rebuilt after part of the town was flooded for the building of a dam back in the 70s. These shop fronts portray the late 1800s though so a step back in time. Worth a little wander around. A couple of places to eat and drink too.

This is an amazing spot, so much history here and its worth the walk around to see everything. Today was our very first time seeing the 'Old Cromwell ' we traveled up from Dunedin. Come check it out 😁

Fusee Rouge is a charming cafe with delicious coffee and tea selections, as well as amazing breakfast options. The staff are welcoming and attentive, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The cafe also has a great outdoor seating area perfect for relaxing in the summer months.
The staff here are amazing – so friendly, always smiling, and their service is excellent! It’s such a welcoming place to visit. The food is also great, especially the Eggs Benny with Mushroom – it was rich, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. Thank you for the wonderful experience every time. Highly recommend this café!
Piromya P — Google review
Absolutely horrible experience today after my meal was ordered and paid for twice!!! Yes twice and forgotten both times the waitress then tried to tell us it was never ordered, after reciting back to us what we had ordered and repeated back everything correctly, and my husband going back in to order again still they failed... in the end my husband had to demand a refund and I went to the beautiful bakery next door. Staff were unfortunately lacking in many customer service qualities and the food was by far lacking consistency, being my husband and son both ordered the same big breakfast meal, one meal consisted of 1 egg the other 2, beans were cold and both mentioned it was not enjoyable... Management needs a serious shake up! Edited to show meal inconsistencies. Note * at NO point did we order a kids meal. * Meal missed was Granola.

Love the Pulled Pork sandwiches and Long Black coffee here. Warm and cozy atmosphere. Delicious food and good coffee. I came here around 8:30am on Sunday and there’s not many people, the service was fast. Will definitely come back for a late lunch and beer. 👍

Heading to Cromwell to stock up on fruit, as it is THE stone fruit capital of the country, and we were in desperate need of a coffee. We popped in here and ordered a flat white, an Americano and a Chai Latte. The drinks came quickly and were delicious. A good flavour with a bitter aftertaste. We also had a bowl of fries and these were served with some tomato sauce and aoli. Fresh, crisp and tasty. A nice spot for a quick bite and drink.

Best experience of my life. I can die happy now that I’ve been to the Cromwell Fruit Sculpture. A must see on the southern island of NZ. Don’t bother seeing anything else. It won’t live up to the fruit.

A little beautiful town, not much tourist spots that you could spend lots of time to visit but still good to stop by and take a picture or have a lunch here. It has a nice Middle East restaurant nearby( strongly recommended!!). Plenty of parking spaces here, for normal cars or motor home.

Jackson Orchards offers a delightful tour that allows visitors to explore the heart of the orchards and pick fresh produce during the fruit season. Customers praise the hassle-free ordering process and efficient delivery of cherries and Black Doris plums, which arrived in excellent condition. The orchard's picturesque setting during autumn is described as breathtaking, with stunning fall foliage that captivates visitors.
They had a bin of discounted veges nearing their shelf life which was great to see, avoiding wastage. The real fruit Ice creams were also a reasonable price. Very good too!! We walked along the roadside and got some photos of the orchard and if you are interested in the tour try the Book Me NZ site as they had deals available to make it cheaper.
D&C L — Google review
Came to this fruit and ice cream shop based on a friend’s recommendation. We tried the strawberry and mango flavours — both tasted quite nice. However, it seemed like almost half of the ice cream was a different flavour, maybe leftover from the previous order in the machine. Still, the flavour was good and refreshing. It would be even better if they used fresh fruit instead of frozen ones.
Cooper — Google review
Cannot recommend this place enough! The best real fruit ice cream! Lucky enough to stop here twice. I had the Blueberry and strawberry with a cream base. And mum had the apricot and mango. Great selection of fruits as well.

Fruit plantation the selling difference kinds of fruit such as Kiwi, orange, apple.. includes vegetable. Items are looking very fresh and nice. The price is on average and some are slightly lower than the supermarket. We like is the Fruit-ice cream. In such a cold weather but many are still enjoy eating it.
Esmond C — Google review
Apricots and peaches were good, as well as the real fruit frozen yogurt. Be careful of what was the last flavor served in the machine as you will have a residue (I ordered cherry and finished with banana from the previous order).

Jackson Orchards offers a great variety of fresh produce, and their real fruit ice cream is a highlight! We waited 20 minutes for it, but it was definitely worth it!

An orchard known for its cherries (cheap and delicious). If you are going to get an ice cream, please do yourself and get a bigger size. It is amazing and you won't regret it. Didn't find better cherries or ice cream during the week we spent in New Zealand.

We stopped at Jackson Farm for some fruit mixed Ice Cream which was pure bliss. Their ice cream is a revelation, made with local fruits blended with cream or yogurt. Every spoonful feels like summer on your tongue. You choose whether you want cream or yogurt. Then you choose your fruit and they blend right there.

Cheeki Cherries is a must-visit destination in Cromwell, offering an unforgettable pick-your-own experience. Nestled in a sustainable orchard, you can gather not just cherries but also apricots, peaches, and nectarines. The family-friendly atmosphere includes various games and activities to keep everyone entertained. While the staff may be busy during peak times, their friendliness shines through as they guide you on your fruit-picking adventure. Remember to savor the delicious real fruit ice cream available on-site!
Had a good time picking me own dark cherries which were nice and sweet. Had to wait a little while for attention as staff gets pretty busy and overwhelmed by tourists. Wait for the staff to orientate you on where to go and how to pick. Respect goes both ways so I didn’t have any trouble. I did have tourists ask me about sampling the goods so I had to tell them it’s more pick your own instead of all you can eat kinda experience. Do try the real fruit ice cream it’s a treat.
Zai — Google review
Had such a fun time picking cherries yesterday! The staff were all incredibly helpful, they showed me the best technique a for picking and where the sweetest cherries were growing. The ice cream was so tasty and the owner had a great accent too. Would recommend to everyone!

An absolutely fantastic experience at Cheeki Cherries! The white and dark cherries are of outstanding quality — sweet, fresh, and bursting with flavor. We had such a great time picking our own, and we’re already looking forward to coming back for more. Highly recommended for a fun and delicious outing!
Thomas W — Google review
I absolutely love this orchard! There's no entry fee, and the staff is incredibly friendly. There are plenty of trees to pick from, making it a wonderful experience. However, it's disheartening to see so much waste caused by visitors. The staff works hard all year to prepare for just a few weeks of harvest, so let’s show our appreciation by being mindful and minimizing waste when picking cherries.
Seema B — Google review
We had a terrible experience today... the cherries were good, but the behavior was very rude and unprofessional. We were not instructed properly about the rules of picking, however the owner was blaming that we didn't pick the cherries properly. He was also using abusive words which was not expected at all. So they need to work on their behavior and customer services.
A T — Google review
great activity. full of cherries when we got there end of December. per person must get 1kg cherries. which is only $17 and the cherries are so sweet and big! we can also enjoy the cherries as many as you want for free! while picking the cherries. 4 of us bring home 7kg of cherries. not sure how that happened, but absolutely enjoy it. they provide ladder around so you can settle on a tree that produce a sweet and big cherries. they also have white cherries which is a bit more expensive and some other fruits such as plum, apricot, and nectarines. after picking, would recommend you to enjoy their real fruit icecream. they have option for yogurt icecream. very enjoyable activity. would highly recommend.
Olivia V — Google review
Great PYO Cherries activity for weekends. You can eat cherries during the picking and pay for the take away. I paid $17/kg which is better price than before Xmas. Big size cherries with medium sweetness.

PYO Cherries near Cromwell. This place seems to be the most popular and I can see why. Excellent friendly service, juicy sweet cherries to pick from, both red and white varieties. They also have ice cream and a kids playground. If you pick too much, you can also send it back home by courier

It was my first time trying go-karts and it was truly an amazing experience! My 10-year-old son had an absolute blast too. Even if you bump a little, it doesn’t hurt. Before that, we played mini golf, and it was really fun doing it with the wind blowing hard—it added to the charm!

Steve — Google review
During our road trip through New Zealand, we stumbled upon the Highlands race track quite by chance. We were hoping that an opportunity to either drive or ride along would be available at just the right time. And I was in luck! Shortly after arriving, I was able to enjoy a very dynamic ride in a Lamborghini Huracán with a professional driver. The track is very interesting, with tight corners, fast sections through hills and valleys, and bridge crossings. I had a lot of fun and highly recommend it.

Visitors can admire the strong flow of the river as it passes through Gibbston Valley, flanked by high gray cliffs. Information boards are available to enhance the experience, making it a safe and informative stop.
Beautiful stop with powerful views over the river and hydro station. The vivid turquoise water is stunning and there is plenty of space to pull over safely for photos. It is a quick stop but well worth it to take in the scenery and feel the energy of the fast-moving water. Great spot to stretch your legs and admire New Zealand’s natural beauty.

Summary 3.5/5: A Quick Scenic Stop This is a great little stop for a quick, scenic break on State Highway 6, perfect if you have 5-10 minutes to spare. It's a convenient and easy-to-access viewpoint with a good photo opportunity. The View: 4/5 The main draw here is the view, and it doesn't disappoint. From the observation deck, you can see a small but stunning turquoise waterfall from the nearby power station's water stream. The combination of the vibrant water, the scenic gorge, and the winding highway in the background makes for a fantastic picture. The informational boards are a nice touch, adding some education context to the visit. Location & Parking: 3/5 The lookout is super easy to get to, especially if you're coming from Cromwell. If you're heading from Queenstown, be sure to signal early as the turn is right after a bend. The parking area is small, with enough space for about 8 cars, but not to worry, no crowd here. Unfortunately, there are no facilities on-site.
Jo L — Google review
Roaring Meg Lookout is a fantastic little stop with breathtaking views over the Kawarau River. The vivid blue water and surrounding rugged hills create a dramatic and memorable scene. It’s a great spot to take a break while driving between Queenstown and Cromwell, and the lookout is easily accessible from the roadside. The hydroelectric station below adds an interesting historical and industrial touch to the natural beauty of the area. You can often hear the rushing water, which gives the place its name. There’s a small area to park and take photos—perfect for a quick scenic stop. Definitely worth pulling over for a few minutes to enjoy the view and soak in the landscape. A classic Central Otago moment!

I had the carbonara. I was disappointed in mine, the first initial mouthfuls were good then I felt some kind of heat which really put me off. It had, what looked like, chilli flakes through it?? I asked the waiter and he said it had sweet chilli sauce through it. You DO NOT put sweet chilli sauce in carbonara!! So I left the rest of it as it was not great. Chicken parmigiana was great apparently! It was large too. Lamb shanks were fantastic. The stuffed chicken was nice too and moist. However all of the meals except mine, had a gravy that just did not fit the meals. It tasted like bistro powder and water. It was not good. Overall, the service was really good and attentive. I would go back to try other things but the gravy and the sweet chilli sauce were the only things that were bad. Oh!! And I wanted a side of fries!!!! OMG they were MASSIVE AND DELICIOUS!!!! so Thankyou Brew House. We’ll be back ☺️☺️☺️❤️

Tables were very sticky, all it needed was a wipe down with a hot cloth or something. Menus needing a reprint as all of ours were well worn and by the looks of previous reviews haven't changed for a number of years. Food was nice enough, but maybe the atmosphere/decor needs a spruce up.

nice please, not cheap but wouldn’t say that expensive either. some tables outside, a lots of space inside. cocktails, beers from the tap and okey menu. Days special 22,50$, beef burger 25$, garlic cheese pizza 16$?, vegetarian burger 20,50$. Drinks 10+$ Fries not the tastiest, but you can get a bottle of ketchup. Burgers good, but a bit dry. Definitely not the healthiest place but you can find something for everyone in the menu. Would say that we recommend. 7/10

The Nichol's Garden & Pet Centre, located in Central Otago, is a highly recommended stop between Queenstown and Lake Tekapo. This popular cafe is bustling with locals and offers divine food options for both breakfast and lunch, available to eat in or take away. The bakery case is filled with delicious treats, including a mouth-watering raspberry almond tarte. The cafe also serves exceptional chai lattes that are among the best ever tasted.
One of the best coffees I have had and the service was truly excellent. Cabinet food was fresh and very good. I had the Zucchini and Corn muffin ❤️ and my wife had a cheese scone. Both awesome. Nice atmosphere. Definitely our coffee spot whenever in Cromwell, now.

Always find something for my dog , although last time I was there they must have been waiting for a new shipment of goods as the shelves were quite empty. Never mind gives me an excuse to go back and have another browse and impromptu purchase. Thanks team, from Clyde the poodle woof woof

This was such a cute and lovely cafe nested in a garden and pet centre. They had a cute display of cakes and pastries at the counter and I got myself a carrot cake and matcha latte. Their carrot cake was not too sweet to my liking and their matcha latte was pretty solid. My friends had got other breakfast item and they were delicious.

Great place to stop for morning coffee and a cheese scone. Friendly attentive staff. We sat outside on a cool autumn morning. We were able to take our Labradoodle into that area. It was a cool autumn morning and staff provided blankets to help take off the chill .

This is such a fantastic garden center. The range of the plants is very good and very healthy. We visited with a very old dog she loves to be with us but sometimes she has a accident, which happened on this occasion I approach the staff for a mop and bucket to clean up.the manager stated with a smile we will sort it. Really appreciate not to be made unwelcome. After that we received very good advice on roses and what we should buy. We took their advice, they look beautiful in our garden( i have includedphotos of finished result). On the way out we bought Xmas decorations they a very good range very reasonably priced on special. We will back. Thanks you this is our garden center and pet store of choice.

Jones Family Fruit Stall in Cromwell is a popular stop for fresh fruit, snacks, and gifts. They offer a wide variety of fruits, including unique hybrid options like Pluot and Peacharine. While slightly more expensive than supermarkets, it's a great spot to take a break during your travels. Visitors can also explore the orchard, sample fruit wines, and enjoy the picturesque surroundings. The stall offers an array of local products such as dried fruits and sweets.
It is popular place for tourists. The cherry and kiwi was so fresh and sweet. We tried ice cream with my kids. I recommend mango flavor👍🏻👍🏻

I think they're one of the only fruit stalls with white cherries in the area. The cherries are very sweet and delicious BUT they have no quality control! In a 1kg box of cherries, nearly half were damaged, scarred and some even mouldy. These would never have been sold elsewhere or would be priced as seconds but they were sold full price. Very disappointed!!

Jones Family Fruit Stall offers a delightful stop along the Kawarau Gorge Road. This roadside stall provides a wide array of fresh, locally grown fruits. The vibrant colors of the produce are immediately appealing, showcasing the seasonal bounty of the Central Otago region. You can expect to find a variety of fruits, likely including apples, cherries, peaches, and possibly some more unique local offerings depending on the time of year. Supporting local growers like the Jones family is a great way to enjoy the freshest flavors of New Zealand. Stopping here provides a lovely opportunity to taste the region's best.

This is the right place to buy some seasonal fresh fruits 🍒🍇🍎🍊🍋🥝, veggies 🥦🥕🧅🫜🍅🫑, Manuka Honey 🍯 & snacks in Cromwell. They also have fresh fruit ice cream 🍦and a beautiful flowers garden 🌹🌹🌹next to it, so you can sit there and enjoy an ice cream or snap pictures. 😍 By that time I had already get back on the bus after shopping for some seasonal fresh fruits and strolling arround the garden with my group. Then the driver approached me and said that the shop owner wanted to meet me. So I went back to the shop. As a TL, I introduced myself to her 🤝 and chit chat for a while. She was a humble person. She let me take the drink that I wanted from the chiller and gave me 1 pcs manuka honey as a souvenir. Thank You Mrs. Jones..May you always be healthy. See you again next time.🙏🏻😘💖

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the captivating history of gold mining at the Goldfields Mining Centre. Located in Central Otago, this center offers guided tours that provide insight into the tools, techniques, and socio-economic impact of 19th-century gold mining. Explore old miners' huts, shafts, and tunnels to gain a glimpse into life during the gold rush era.
Random find. We stopped off while traveling somewhere else. Did the tour and gold panning. It was $35pp. Definitely worth it. It was something nice to do. The guide was great. Lots of things to look at. There is a self guided walk you can do . It's quite hilly and lots of gravel though, but loads to see. Recommend doing it clockwise, not anticlockwise like we did!!
Lauren W — Google review
Loved the day out here, had a walk around the Chinese camp, tour, gold panning, and a beer at the bar. Our tour guide was fantastic, he was very enthusiastic and easy to talk to. He showed us how to gold pan (we didn't find any) and we chatted with him afterwards too.

My sister and I both really enjoyed our time here. I would advise sturdy walking shoes. We both have health issues and we did the short walk. The staff were amazing and the retail space is very tempting, and yes we were tempted.

Not much to see unless you pay $45 to enter. We didn't think it was worth it. Would have been happy to pay $20 to $25. There is a bridge across the river. Definitely worth walking across to see the power of the water. Certainly wouldn't want to fall in.

Definitely a fun little exercise and pretty cheap it was worth a look, you can pan for gold and if you are lucky enough to find something you get to keep it

We picked a day for it! Pretty cool experience walking through Chinatown, honestly hard to believe that thousands lived like that! The old machinery is impressive and we enjoyed our wee history fix. Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Central Otago, Mt Difficulty Wines is a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts and food lovers alike. This charming winery, located on the renowned Felton Road, offers an inviting rustic-chic restaurant and tasting bar where visitors can indulge in delightful wine samplings. The winery emerged from a collaboration of four esteemed vineyards, creating a seamless experience that showcases their expertise.
One of the highlights of our trip! A reservation is absolutely essential if you want to enjoy a seated meal with these stunning views. The wine tasting was exceptional – every pour complemented the food so beautifully, and the staff were incredibly knowledgeable and warm, helping us pair our selections perfectly. We ended up wanting to try almost every main dish, and the staff kindly advised us not to overorder – which turned out to be great advice because the desserts were incredible and definitely not to be missed. From the locally inspired produce to the thoughtfully plated mains and their signature wines, everything was top-tier. The atmosphere, service, and scenery all came together to make this a dream lunch. Highly, highly recommend!

Mt Difficulty is an absolute gem in Central Otago. The team is professional, attentive and friendly. The food is outstanding, beautifully presented and full of flavor. As my sister likes sparkling wine so we ordered a bottle. Will definitely come back next time for the wine tasting. Highly recommended for anyone wants memorable food, wine and landscape experience 🍷👍

We have a lunch session at the winery and shared a couple of dishes. The vegetarian ravioli was really good, as with the tiger prawns. The crispy pork belly was OK but not fantastic. The wine tasting was good although I think it was overpriced for a winery which should use the chance to promote their wines.

A must!!! Every aspect of the food was sensational. Chef Chloe and Ruby in the kitchen have a real eye for presentation and flavour! On top of that the wine tasting and views were breathtaking. Cannot wait to rebook another holiday and drive this beautiful scenic road and have the best lunch in NZ 🍷

One of the best experience and my favourite in Central Otago! Scenic location, friendly staff and great Pinot Noir wines! I visited on 01 August 2025 and sampled their premium range. The staff shared excellent knowledge about their wines. Nothing beats sitting out on their patio and sampling their Pinot Noir! I will be back for sure!

Every element of our lunch experience at Mt Difficulty winery was exceptional.. Boasting a beautiful view across wineries, orchards and mountains, this restaurant could be forgiven for offering average fare.. This is most certainly not the case! Delicious food pairs with high-quality wines, in particular, I enjoyed the burrata with their Chenin Blanc and eye fillet with their Manson's farm pinot noir..

👍 Like my review! This was the first place we went to taste in the Otago Valley and we were very impressed by Te Kano. We wish we lived closer or lived in New Zealand to get a full case sent to our home. As a person who understands and enjoy wines, they hit the target on all their wines. The customer service, views, and pricing were great and I would highly recommend to our family and friends.

What an amazing place! My partner and I decided to visit Te Kano on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and we were not disappointed with the amazing customer service, quality of wine and ambience of this place. This hidden gem nestled in the vast hills of Bannockburn offered exquisite wine tasting, a 'build your own picnic' and stunning views that captured the beauty of Central Otago. We thoroughly enjoyed the variety of wines we tasted and fell in love with the Riesling - which we of course took home! We would definitely recommend this place for those wine lovers out there!

We just found our new favourite Winery in the whole NZ! Views are stunning - overlooking the Kawarau River & the Bannockburn Mining landscapes, especially on a nice sunny day, it is perfect! Great location to do your wine tasting, so relaxing & this is definitely a hidden Gem! They produce amazing wines and with multiple wines have been awarded as one of the best in NZ! Not to mention you can build you own charcuterie board from their pantry. (Try their cherry chutney - amazing & you would want to go back for more!) Delicious wine, easy to drink, enjoy the taste and explore the wine notes during your wine tasting here. Highly recommend! I would go back in a heartbeat!

Visiting Te Kano was perhaps the highlight of my entire trip to New Zealand. The property and architecture is absolutely stunning, the service was phenomenal, and the wines were fabulous across the board. I did a tasting and was served by Maddie, who was incredibly knowledgeable about all the wines and created a specialized tasting based on my preferences. The Northburn Pinot Noir and the Waitaki Chardonnay were probably my favorites but I enjoyed each wine I tasted- the wine itself is truly world-class. I also loved that it’s a family business and members of the family were working in the cellar door. It was so great to hear about their story and their passion both for the wine and for protecting and preserving the land. Absolutely recommend!
Annika K — Google review
We had such a great time at Te Kano Estate. The place is absolutely stunning and the wine tasting was very enjoyable. Alcides welcomed and provided us with a great experience, giving an in-depth explanation about the different types of vineyards and the history of the venue. We will definitely return for the delicious wine and also for the great service.
Giovanna V — Google review
We had an amazing experience! We’ve been served by Maddie and she was lovely. She explained to us very thoroughly all the wines we were about to taste and responded to many other curious questions we had about the wine industry. For sure a very knowledgeable person that offered a 5-stars customer experience! Plus, the views are just stunning. Great place to sit, relax and enjoy the peaceful landscapes of the South Island💙
Trinidad V — Google review
If one is a lover of exquisite wine, art and architecture, Te Kano is a necessary homage as this is where all 3 worlds collide. Leaving the more obvious wine trails behind, one traverses along a non-descript dusty road before being rewarded by the endlessly stunning vistas of this vineyard. Inside the cellardoor, one feels like a seed in a pod, an embroyo of its viticulture in more ways than one. The taste of its wine is tasting the land, it's story, it's history. Te Kano's resident sommelier Kaitlin was our guide on this journey, peppering us with the family's ethos of conservation, regeneration and experimentation. It was truly an experience to remember.

Bannockburn Sluicings Historic Reserve, located near Cromwell, offers a glimpse into the area's gold mining past. The landscape bears the marks of historic gold mining activities and provides elevated views of Central Otago's vineyards and rocky hills. Visitors can explore ruined buildings along a loop track or opt for longer walks. The reserve showcases remnants of the once-thriving gold mining operations, offering insights into the region's history and the tenacity of its miners.
Love this unique NZ landscape. The hard work to shift all the ground was epic and has left an American desert type environment. However plant life is beginning to reclaim some ground and the smell of thyme was thick. Interesting info boards explain what went on here. Just very disappointing the dog owners aren't picking up their dog poo. Don't know how they can just leave it on the well used tracks.
D&C L — Google review
Definately a different landscape compared to the rest of the country. Very easily to go down the wrong trails as i did and have to backtrack many times. Cool spot though
Hayden T — Google review
I walk here in a sunny day of spring ! It was absolutely amazing walk … the flowers are blooming and covers all like a carpet . The rock scenery is very suggestive! I’d love to spend here 2 h doing the loop of the trail . Just stop and go explore around it’s beautiful
Francesca F — Google review
Found this place on AllTrails. Wasn’t listed in any guidebooks I read but should be. This place is amazing! Great views. Feels very much like a slice of the American Southwest with the badlands and cliffs. Juxtaposed with the wineries surrounding it and it’s truly a special location. The trail is a loop. The most interesting part of the loop is to the left, so I’d walk in a clockwise route.
Andrew B — Google review
Beautiful and arid landscape. The view of the mesas and plateaus offers a stark contrast against the snowy peaks in the background. Perfect place for an easy hike or bike ride.
Atticus P — Google review
The walk around the Bannockburn Sluicings is pretty darn good. The loop track is around 3.5 to 4 km and takes a good hour or more if you explore a bit and stop for a few snaps. It's amazing to think that this landscape was modified do much by mining efforts around 150 years ago. It looks like something in a desert from the movies. Reading the information panels is worthwhile if you like history, particularly gold mining history. The Stewart town ruins are pretty cool and make you wonder what life would be like up here all those years ago. Be careful to follow the trail as it's easy enough to wander off onto other tracks. Just follow the markers and check for them regularly. The walk is quite hilly so a reasonable degree of fitness is required as us being reasonably sure footed. Nothing is too difficult though. Take water on a hot day. The views are panoramic and truly stunning as you get to the top. It feels like you can see 100 miles as you look out over the vineyards, across Cromwell and all the way down Lake Dunstan to the mountains. Beautiful.
Paul B — Google review
This site is amazing. The views are great from the top. History of the area is mind blowing the signs give you a brief look into what it was like. Goldming in such a baron place would have been so hard, all for GOLD. Sad that they didn't have to return the land to the way it was. The smell of thyme was lovely.
Pauline T — Google review
Great walk to explore the history of this gold mining area. The track should suit all levels of fitness but there is a lack of signposts and it's easy to wander off the main track meaning that you'll need to backtrack. I'd recommend doing the full loop up to Stewart Town. Take some water if the weather is hot as it can be quite dusty and dry.

The Bruce Jackson Memorial Lookout, overlooking Cromwell, Central Otago, South Island, NZ. At State Highway 8 on Lake Dunstan, just about the furthest point from the sea of anywhere in New Zealand. Historically known for gold mining, then horticulture fruit, and for it's Pinot Noir wines. Now Cromwell has struck it lucky with gold again! In 2025, just 15 minutes north of Cromwell, Australian miner Santana Minerals believes the hills between Bendigo and Ophir could hold $4.4 billion worth of gold. Cromwell will have the biggest property boom in history! The company hopes to submit a fast track application and create 250 full time jobs living in the surrounding communities. There would be no fly-in, fly-out of staff or major camps required, it said. Nearby Cromwell had an 8000-strong labour pool and there was main road access from State Highway 8. Queenstown International Airport was just a one-hour drive away, Lake Dunstan provided access to fresh water and the Clyde Dam supplied clean, green energy. Sorry "greenies", you lose. Miners love to gamble and win. Instead of being serfs in slavelandia NZ, working for minimal wage in tourism / hospitality. NZ government says, "Mine, baby, mine!"

It's been twenty years since I crossed that swing bridge,I don't mean my marriage lol 😆. I mean the one from the car park over the Kawarau river. To one of the first mining settlement during the early gold rush days. On site is a Bar and kitchen eating establishment with a detailed 👌 finger food menu. Very light and tasty. So if you've left Queenstown or the West Coast call in and rest up and take in the views and atmosphere on offer. Hopefully you'll try the food. Awesome service from the young lady from Brighton (England) was a pleasure returning back here.

One of the finer cafe-restaurants in Cromwell. Set in a 19th century-style stone building, it gives a hearty nod to the town’s rich history in its days of old. Rustic flare meets upscale bistro style at this modern eatery with an old-world feel. Artisanal fusion menu featuring a high turnover of fresh, locally sourced ingredients with continental inspiration, prepared to a gourmet standard. Service is top notch — the duty manager, Kira, is a delight. Her deep knowledge and professional demeanor only enrich the whole experience. And with stunning waterfront views over Lake Dunstan, The Office really ticks all the right boxes. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place to friends, family, colleagues or anyone passing through the area.

Great welcome as soon as we walked in. Warm interior, lovely staff, comfortable stylish furnishings and decor. Beautiful views of the lake. Tried the advertised Cassels beef stew and potato mash, it was the perfect meal for a nippy day of wandering the Old Precinct. Ordered an Oat milk Chai to go and it was excellent too. Bathroom wallpaper very cool too. We will definitely be back!

Restaurant
Black Rabbit Kitchen and Bar is a beloved dining spot in the Central Otago region, known for its easygoing atmosphere and top-notch Kiwi cuisine. The restaurant offers a diverse menu featuring fresh seafood, hearty salads, mouthwatering meat dishes, and dedicated options for pizza and kids. Visitors can savor award-winning mains such as the rabbit and shiitake mushroom pie with mash or indulge in pork ribs with sticky barbecue sauce.
Such a nice place to have breakfast in. Staffs were so pleasant, chatty (just the right amount). Food was an excellent combo of salty and unsalted portions (had to combine some to get that umami).

Fabulous! Called in for breakfast - had eggs benedict with bacon and hubby went for full cooked breakfast. Both were delicious - perfectly cooked, good ingredients, nicely presented and above all tasty!! Coffee and Ceylon tea to go with it. The staff were friendly and efficient. If you’re in the area don’t miss this place!

My wife and I had the pleasure of dining at The Black Rabbit over the weekend, and we were absolutely blown away by the entire experience. The staff were warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere struck a perfect balance between relaxed and refined. The biggest challenge of the evening? Choosing what to order, everything on the menu sounded incredible. We ultimately went with the wasabi squid, buffalo wings, scallops, mixed grill, and banana split. While the buffalo wings were delicious, the squid truly stole the show, delivering the perfect wasabi kick that made the dish stand out. The chef’s special scallops were next-level, absolutely mind blowing. You could feel the chef’s passion and creativity in every bite, with layers of flavour that came together in stunning harmony. Then came the mixed grill, a dream for any carnivore. The brisket in particular was unforgettable, hands down the most tender, melt-in-your-mouth meat I’ve ever tasted. For a relatively unassuming spot tucked away off the beaten path, The Black Rabbit delivered cuisine that could rival some of the best restaurants around. The chef is clearly a master of his craft. If you have the chance to dine here, don’t hesitate. It’s well worth the trip.

WOW! I have to start by saying that. Its been awhile since every food course was absolutely devine. We had 3 starters (I sadly didnt take photos of them, I was too hungry) The scallops, the bone marrow and the salt and pepper squid. My partner is a seafood lover and the scallops were cooked to perfection and well seasoned. I even liked them and im not a big scallop fan. The bone marrow came with a bacon jam which was so yummy! Toasted sourdough was nice and crispy but not too overdone. Salt and pepper squid was nicely done. A good staple when we go out to eat. For the mains we both got the smoked venison wellinton. It came with a parsnip purée which im not a fan of, and they gladly let me choose a different option. It was so delicious and not too rich, red wine ju was absolutely lovely aswell. Slight smokey flavour to the meat was such a nice touch, you dont really see a Wellington done like this! On the specials board they had Tiramisu which is one of my favourite desserts. For $10 it was a good portion size. Lovely flavour and you can taste that its real espresso coffee they use to make instead of the bottled sweet stuff some places get. It was so big i couldn’t finish it! Have some lovely raspberries in it aswell which added a nice touch. My only critique would be i wish it was fresh cream ontop, as it was the canned whipcream. Still yum though! If you are a coffee lover you will definitely enjoy this dessert. It was nice and quiet as we went at 5:30pm. They open at 5pm for dinner. I do wish there was some background music. Overall such a beautiful restaurant. Staff were also lovely and friendly. Partner is a big whiskey guy and absolutely enjoyed The Cardona. Never had it before and now we are gonna go buy some. Its a real treat!!

This has to be the best fun I've had in 2024! I'm a fairly fit 61 year old but am kid at heart. On Sunday I finally got a chance to go to the Kiwi Water Park. First up I was fitted into a life jacket and given some new grippy socks to wear to help stop you slipping on the inflatables. After the safety briefing I went to the waters edge and started to wade in. The water was a bit chilly so I waded back out and up to the office to see if I could hire a wetsuit. Thank goodness one of the lovely staff members loaned me theirs. Take a wetsuit if you have one as not only do you stay warm, it helps with body slap on the water. I was with a friend and her 2 boys. She'd been before and helped me around the course. I tried nearly every thing and loved the big slides but my favourite blow up was the hamster wheel, it was a barrel of laughs and left me with sore sides from laughing. Her boys were all over the place and there were lots of teenagers making the most of there time there. Everyone was happy and having a ball. I tired after an hour or so and was happy get out and be on dry land. There was a container with a pop up tent to change into my dry clothes and warm back up. Staff were super friendly and very helpful. It was hands down a great afternoon of exceptional fun. A day pass would be great as just watching is good too and if it's a hot Central day I'm sure I would be in and out all day. Highly recommended for groups, family and friends or even on your own.

This is a huge water park placed in Clutha river. A fun place to go and spend a few hours with your kids. This place is designed for swimmers. If you can’t swim just avoid the place. Because this is a part of the river and too deep. If the staff see you are struggling, despite the amount you paid, they will take you out and no refunds.

Highly recommend it to friends heading to Central Otago for the summer. A must-do if you're in the area!

We were so stoked to win 5 day passes to the kiwi waterpark in a recent Facebook competition and used this today for our daughters birthday celebration with her friends…and had the best time!!! fab service and smiles from the staff, super professional and well presented safety briefing and great setup for all the life jackets, grippy water socks etc. not to mention the awesome quality and quantity of the inflatables themselves… just wow! Since they’ve moved round the corner into the low burn inlet the park is less effected by the wind too so even though it was a windy day today they were still able to open and the kids all had an amazing time! Thanks so much guys! We can’t wait to come back next season!!!

The 45th Parallel South Marker is an ideal destination for geography enthusiasts. Situated at the midway point between the equator and the South Pole, this historic landmark offers breathtaking views of Lake Dunstan. Accessible from both sides of the road, it features a walkway along the lake and another marker atop a hill for those who enjoy hiking.
Spectacular view. A must do when visiting Cromwell. I walked up with the kids ages 5- 9 years old and they loved it! We lost count of the stairs we climbed. A fantastic steep walk.

A short trip up steps to a plateau with stunning views, stick to the trail where it continues along the ridge or drops to the right. The descent from the ridge top is steep and loose with MEGA birdie bids. The swim in the lake after is amazing
AO — Google review
The "attraction": The 45th Parallel Monument, it marks the halfway point between the equator and the South Pole, exactly 45° south of the Earth’s equator. If you have the time, can climb up the 500 steps stairs and do the 3km loop walk. The starting point is at the opposite side of the parking lot. If you are not planning to do the climb, then this is a boring rest stop by State Highway 6. There's no view as blocked by the bushes.

This is a great spot for geography nerds. The 45th parallel marks the halfway point between the equator and the South Pole. The roadside marker has parking accessible by both road lanes and runs along a walkway by the lake. There is also a marker along the hilltop if anyone fancies the hike.

Such a great experience visiting the Cloudy Bay Shed. We came here for lunch and the food was superb. Every dish has its story and we can feel the Chef’s intention and expression behind it. We also did the wine tasting there. I would suggest to try the exclusive offer only at the Central Otago cellar door. Staffs were great, friendly and welcoming. Very passionate in the brand and their roles. I especially like my experience on the wine tasting order on each bottle (which I don’t want to say it here). We had a last minute appointment for wine tasting on a late afternoon and I was glad we paid this place a visit. I had never been to a place as beautiful and stunning as this. We were given a walkthrough for every wine we tried and we were delighted at the way the wine person delivered it. He was fun and easy going to chat with. We ended up buying two bottles of wine before the winery closed for the day. I really enjoyed the short stay here even for a brief wine tasting. Hope I could come back again for the view.

We had an excellent dinner here on a busy Friday night, with the place buzzing with locals enjoying themselves. Despite the crowd, the service was fast and friendly. I ordered the nachos, and my husband had a burger—both were absolutely delicious, with massive portions! We had a meal here and sorry to say everything was terrible. Pork belly bites were very overcooked, garlic bread was flavorless and doughy, beef burger was chewy and the fettuccine was bland and had no flavor at all. The restaurant atmosphere and staff were great

Went there on a Friday evening for dinner and it was packed. Lovely appealing exterior stone and wooden building - made to look like a barn or lodge. Seemed to be the busiest place in Cromwell that night with all the locals. Great vibe. Felt like a real small town, farming, southerners pub. Loved all the hunting type, rustic wooden interior design. Couldn't get a table initially so sat on lovely Chesterfield leather couches until a table became free. Bit disappointed that there was no table service when ordering our food. We had to go up to the bar to order. Staff seemed friendly. Had the fried chicken with siracha mayo as a starter which was incredible. So crispy and tasty! Then had the Angus rib-eye steak with winter veg and garlic butter - very good and decent sized portions too. I'd definitely go back there. The other meals on the menu looked great too.

Freindly service. Great coffee. Meals were a bit hit and miss. Venison pie was great. Blue cod was good one day oily another day. The pizza was full of meat. A big serving but came out cold in places. It was much better when I reheated it at home.

Great place, we came here for lunch on our way to Twizel. It was very nice, we had shrimp linguine and crispy chicken burger. Nice setting outside and inside. There are two restaurants actually, one licensed with a bar and another one next to it without the bar but great for kids. Menu is the same, I think the one also had bar snacks and the pizzas!

Awesome experience! Lovely service, very tasty food, clean space. Brownie dessert was really fine thing, served on a hot plate with ice cream and topped with chocolate topping in front of you. They kindly turned on a heater beside the bar when I felt cold. They offer a discount on your next visit. We will come again!

This bistro and bar is renowned for its innovative "Barrel Cuisine," which originated from a creative idea to smoke seafood using repurposed wine barrels. Guests can indulge in the delightful Stoaker Banquet, featuring an array of gourmet game, meat, and seafood perfect for sharing.
We went for the meat but the star of the show for us were the desserts. Really enjoyed the charcuterie board that come with great portion of cold meats.

One of my favorite restaurants in Cromwell. Came back here after 2 years and always felt satisfied with food and service here. I like the marquee style, decorated with yellow lights and warm atmosphere inside. There’s good selection of beers, tasty dishes. I would recommend pork ribs and cheese fondue 👍
Uyen ( — Google review
The Stoaker Room is a grilling masterpiece. Their meats are cooked to a perfect, flavorful char with unbelievably tender interiors. The quality is exceptional, making every bite a smoky, juicy revelation. However, be prepared for a long wait, even with a reservation. The verdict: The wait is absolutely worth the feast.

We stopped by the Stoaker Room after having a wine tasting at the neighbouring Mishas. Was a nice surprise to be welcomed into a very warm outdoor seating area. Heated perfectly for a cold wet day! We had the Steak Sandwich and Mac n cheese to share. The sandwich was flavourful with the steak cooked perfectly to my liking. The highlight of that dish was the chimichurri, it compliments the dish so well. The Mac n cheese portion could be bigger. To finish, we had the toffee baked Alaskan which was dangerously good, my father stole my plate and finished it off! That was after he enjoyed his own affogato! Definitely recommend if you are in the area.

We loved our food and experience at Stoaker! The food was amazing! We ordered pork ribs, stuffed mushroom and orange roughy. My mum can finish the whole stuffed mushroom. The staff was also amazing! really calm and attentive! We would definitely come back again!

Superb find on the side of the road, in amongst lots of other marquee style venues. Use barrels for a lot of their cooking in a ranch vibe place, stunning food and in a really rustic warm marquee.

What a beautiful evening! We saw this place on the road and stopped. The location is stunning! The table overlooking the trees is truly a peaceful place. The wines are excellent and there is a wide selection of food. The dishes we saw were simply fabulous. We are vegetarians so we tried a limited selection of items, but they were all delicious. The staff is very friendly !A special thanks to our cheerful and smiling waitress who was very professional! Highly recommended,

Pulling into the carpark, we were excited by the smells. Unfortunately the carpark is where our excitement remained. A very cold welcome to start off a child free dinner. Walked through a lovely EMPTY outside dining area, only to be hidden away in a 'backroom' / half renovated extension. I ordered a venison and at over $30, I did expect it to be cooked as I had asked. How wrong was I. Ive never dined in a 'restaurant' that hears 'medium' and 'cut my over $30 venison into little bits' when I've only asked for a medium rare cook. My vegetables tasted like they had been boiled and left outside in the arctic air to cool off. The mac n cheese, I had hoped would atleast tick half a box but my gosh, what a fail that was. 1 x venison and 2 x sides = almost $60. Needless to say, the disappointment hit really hard.

This was one of most unexpected surprises along our trip. We made an unplanned stop at Moorings Restaurant for some dinner before we headed to a campsite and we were not expecting much. Firstly, the food was great. I had the Lamb covered in the most delicious Otago herbs with fries (swapped from mash). It really was one of the best things I have eaten and something I'll surely crave for years to come. We also had a very friendly and kind waitress who couldn't do enough for us. Thank you very much - great restaurant - get the lamb tenderloins!

The vibe of the restaurant is relaxing and rustic. Classy Farm to table style decor. The menu is limited but the food served was great. There are beautiful views from the patio of the surrounding hills and lake. The pizza was good but the burgers just ok. The orange roughy was delicious but ordered it for the corn salad and just got a bit of masculine instead. The food took a bit to arrive but otherwise couldn't fault the service.

We have dined here for lunch before, it is such a beautiful setting overlooking the lagoon at Bannockburn and on a gorgeous autumn day you can't find much better. All the dishes we chose were delicious - especially the duck! - service was professional attentive and personable - thank you Zoe. Also a nice added touch when we advised we were celebrating a birthday. Definitely recommend as a lovely location for a special lunch at the Restaurant or a casual pizza on the lawn at their new addition.

We arrived on a super quiet wintry day and were made super-welcome Even though the kitchen was closed, there was a pizza menu, and the staff were crappy to work with dietary requirements. An unbelievably special spot to enjoy views… and obviously a ridiculously good glass of pinot. Would wholeheartedly recommend. I sincerely hope that the bike path through the property continues to support this business

Fabulous 4-5 course 'Trust the Chef' meal for a large group. Service faultless & friendly. Food fresh & enticing. Good value.

The food was truly delicious as we choose the long lunch trust the chef. But it was a small amount of food for the price. The pairing wine flight was very expensive for just a sip. A shame as we come regarly as locals🤔

This winery is absolutely stunning and a MUST VISIT !! We did the ‘tasting flight’ of their organic wines while eating the most divine food. ( make sure you have the pâté, omg ! ) The wines are as delectable as is this estate. We walked around the premises and tasted a few more wines in the gorgeous cellar door which overlooks another pretty space ‘the glasshouse’ and garden. All areas have breathtaking views, amazing staff and service !!

A second time here, and it didn’t disappoint. The menu was little bit different, but every dish was of top-quality and flavour paired beautifully with their wines. Service was great and attentive. We were aiming to eat outside in the more casual setting, but there was a table available inside, so we opted for that. One of the most picturesque wineries in the region.

$50 green fees are a bit steep for the quality of the course, but as a holiday destination there's few chances to recoup costs. Recommend morning play as the low sun makes the back 9 difficult to play due to sun strike.

Misha's Vineyard Tasting Room is a must-visit spot on the Four Barrels walking wine trail, an 8km self-guided loop trail that takes you past Lake Dunstan and stunning vineyards. Located in Central Otago, this area is renowned for its wineries, including Misha's Vineyard. Visitors rave about the warm hospitality and informative tours provided by Misha herself.

Beautiful wines a stones throw from the vines. Stopped in here by chance and had a wonderful time. We were served by Misha herself who gave us a great verbal tour of her vineyard, backed up with glasses of Centrals finest. Obviously showcasing some great Pinot Noir labels they also boast a delightful range of other wines which are worth stopping for by themselves. Sadly not at the vineyard itself but certainly a much more convenient location, this is a must stop for any traveller (I'm sure the locals are already regulars!)

Had the most amazing wine tasting experience with my father with Kate at Mishas. She was so knowledgeable on the wines served, very personable and relatable which made the experience all the more enjoyable. We ended up buying a selection of our favourites! Cannot wait to enjoy throughout the year with family. Not the first time we have enjoyed Mishas wines. Next time excited to enjoy their selection of good platters on offer.

Central Otago wine tasting trail Otago - this name will forever etched in my heart because 1) it's the name of the university in Dunedin where I spent 2 of the best years in my life; and 2) it's the area in South Island famous for its wineries producing some of the best pinot noir We proceed to Cromwell for lunch - a satisfying one at Stoaker Room - and there I spotted Misha's Vineyard Tasting Room nearby. On unrelated note, do try Stoaker Room as the food rocks! Similar to the wine tasting sessions in this region, a nominal fee is charged for the tasting but will be waived if we purchase a bottle in the end. The sales personnel who attended to us here was friendly and attentive - we had the opportunity to taste one the best seller, Pinot Rose, and bought one in the end. It went to our stomach on the same day when we reached Dunedin.

Very welcoming and the lady doing the tastings was so calm and single-handedly dealt with 5 tasting couples simultaneously. Nice whites, not a fan of their Pinot Noirs, although I suspect if paired with food they would do better.

Having done a few of the jet boat experiences in the Central Otago/Queenstown region over the years showing friends and family from overseas a good time, I can honestly say Goldfields Jet is the best I’ve experienced and deserved a glowing review! The experience was so much fun, educational and personable - our driver Ollie was great! The trip seemed to last for a long time, we boated up the river and then back down to lake and learnt so much about the history of the goldfields at every little stop after a thrilling 360 spin! Ollie was super skilled driving the boat, keeping our adrenaline spiked with close encounters with rock faces and skimming across sand banks - we never stopped grinning. Would recommend to anyone trying to choose which experience to go with.

Full family trip 6yrs up to 16yrs up. Informative driver, joker, sharp driver. Lovely location, shared river enviroment where they all respect the other users. 360 spins aka Hamilton turns got smiles and laughs, and a bit wet with the water spray. So close to the rock walls its exhilarating. Thank you.

A calm cruise with a few adrenaline shots. Take in the beautiful views of the landscapes of Queenstown with 360 degree spins along the way. The price of $99 (Adult) may be a bit steep but you definitely get the most quality from your one hour round trip. Tip: Arrive early so you get to sit at the front of the jet boat, also be prepared to get a bit wet (even though they provide water - proof outerwear).

Felton Road Wines offers a personalized tour of the winery and cellars followed by a wine tasting, but due to their exceptional quality, their wines sell out quickly. Visitors can enjoy free seated tastings and tours at this stunningly great winery known for its passionate approach to winemaking.

During my recent visit with the family to Felton Road Winery, I was thoroughly impressed by the exceptional hospitality and world-class wines. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel welcome and were so kind to let us join the tasting while we were quite late on arrival. The highlight of the visit was, of course, the wines. Their Pinot Noir was nothing short of spectacular—perfectly balanced with rich, complex flavors that showcased the skill and care behind their winemaking process. The Chardonnay was equally impressive, with its crisp, elegant profile and hints of oak that made each sip delightful. Both wines truly captured the essence of the Bannockburn region and were a testament to the winery’s dedication to quality. The setting of the winery was picturesque, also the tasting room providing the perfect backdrop to enjoy their offerings.

This is a stunningly great winery! You will not be disappointed. They offer free, seated tastings and tours. They are a biodynamic vineyard and winery, and make incredible wines they are passionate about. This is one of the best wineries in New Zealand and have some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Great experience. You must book but it is because they do a personalised tour of the winery and cellars. This is followed by a wine tasting. Fortunately for them but unfortunately for us their wine is so good much of it sells out very quickly. In the case of their best 2 wines they are sold out in 5 weeks. This winery embraces a biodinamic farming model. Planting between their vines to attract friendly bugs and deter pests. They have mountain goats to eat pest plants and provide natural fertilizer. Additionally they have solar panels to provide for all their electricity needs. Felton Road winery live and breath sustainable business practices. Refusing to overgrow their business so they are able to maintain complete control of all aspects of their winemaking. Hats off to you for producing one of the best NZ wines and at the same time maintaining environmental sustainable farming practices.

Loved our wine tasting here. It is seated and they talk you through all the wines so it is nicely paced and you can tell how passionate they are about their wines. Couple of things we found a wee bit odd was that one wine we tried you couldn’t buy and another wine you could buy but you couldn’t try. Still enjoyed it anyway and the sad thing was that we did buy one bottle of the 2020 Chardonnay (which we couldn’t try) and opened it last night and loved it but now you can’t buy it anywhere. Will need to wait for the next vintage.

Worth more than 5 stars, TBH. The best big breakfast I've had in my travels, and I've had a few. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the gluten-free offerings were different with a Chocolate and Raspberry Ftiand taking my eye. You'll see that they meant it when they called it a big breakfast and it was the same price anywhere else I've been. Coffee was good, and since I love a long black, it was nice to have one that didn't have the bitterness of some I've drunk recently. And to cap it all, i saw Phil Spencer, of Kirsty and Phil fame, ordering a coffee. So it must be good.

Cheese scones the size of your face, absolutely delicious!! Our first NZ cheese roll was fabulous. Amazing cakes and service.

Nice quiet little cafe next to the hotel. Great value for money and great coffee. Portions are large

Went here for breakfast. Coffee was not great at all. We ordered a piccolo and it was not a piccolo. Coffee was burnt. Ordered the avocado on toast and the avocado was brown and tasted very old. The eggs were very over cooked. An easy dish to cook and very disappointed, couldn’t even finish it as the avocado tasted off. Wouldn’t recommend this place.

Best cafe in Cromwell! We’ve gone so many days in a row for weeks because the wifi and environment is fantastic for working. The staff are SO kind and welcoming; we’ve really appreciated service from Ritchie and Sophie in particular. On top of that, the coffee is delicious and cabinet food is really good — their passionfruit friand has lowkey changed my life, and the gluten-free scones don’t even seem obviously “GF” (take with a grain of salt as I’m neither a scone nor GF aficionado, but all I can say is they’re delicious!!). We’ve had plenty of other good food from the cabinet: teriyaki chicken, potato salad, bagels, everything is fab. 110% recommendations for food, coffee, service & vibes !!!

Takeout Restaurant
Buffalo's American Food Co. offers delicious burgers and generous servings of fries in eco-friendly packaging. Customers can easily order ahead by text and enjoy warm communication from the team. The smashed beef burger is a standout, featuring a soft, slightly sweet bun and unapologetically American cheese served hot, fresh, and very tasty with a generous portion size. The service is exceptional with friendly staff who understand hospitality.
Awesome service with a smile and very amazing food, the burgers were nice and juicy, onion rings crispy goodness and the fries the best in the south. Was a very rainy day and even got service to the car which was unexpected but very kind and generous. 100% recommend will be going back again on our next trip in Central 😊

Eating burgers here was my weekly treat. I was recommended by a friend to visit, and it’s truly delicious. Although I lived in a town far from Cromwell, I would go here every week with my friends. My recommendation is the burger made with wagyu beef 🍔, it’s something I really think everyone should try 🐮. The wait time can be long when it’s busy, so I recommend calling ahead to make a reservation.

Lovely family owned food truck with phenomenal burgers! Ordered quite a few and they came out timely. All the burgers and fries were phenomenal. Highly recommend!

Never disappointed when getting a meal from Buffalo’s. Food is always hot, tasty and fresh. As a fellow North American, the glazed donuts and option of a root beer has a special place in my heart 🙌🏻

A local freind of mine recommended this place for us and we came to try , to be truly honest it did not meet my expectations or how people spoke highly of this place , The service is terrific people are professional and welcoming, The prices to the quality and eating in the car isn't justified, 22 plus dollars for a meal and you eat in the car doesn't sound fair. The taste itself isn't that good but not bad either , and it actually tastes more like Macdonald and it's written wagyu beef which is the farthest it could be from wagyu or even it is a disrespectful to wagyu, I gave it 2 stars for food 5stars for service And 3 for atmosphere

Burgers are great! Couldn't fault them, very tasty, fresh and well balanced. The fries on the other hand aren't great. They were cold, stale and chewy. Either you're trying to cook too many at once, or your oil temp is too low. You probably need to look at your supplier too, as they are pretty bad quality. We are paying premium dollar so expect a premium product, don't go cheap on the ingredients. It kind of let down what was an amazing burger, next time might just go with a burger and would definitely come back

Really delicious burgers accompanied by a generous serving of fries, delivered in nice compostable packaging. We ordered ahead by text - an easy system to use and warm communication from the team. We visited on an evening when the weather was warm and we enjoyed our dinner in the park next to the truck while we watched the world go by!

Best burger and chips I’ve had in New Zealand! I could probably say the same about the States too. They definitely know what they’re doing! You won’t be disappointed. I wish I could’ve eaten another one, but the portion size was perfect. Will definitely be back!

The Victoria Arms Hotel, Restaurant & Pub provides a variety of dining options, including A-la-Carte and Stonegrill menus. They also offer all day menus in their historic bar. For those on a budget, the hotel provides accommodation as well. Customers can enjoy delicious meals such as chicken schnitzel with mushroom gravy or well-cooked steaks. The pub has a pleasant atmosphere and occasionally hosts Quiz nights on Wednesdays.
Fantastic country pub. Beautiful interior with a wonderful fireplace. The service was really friendly and made us feel welcome. The roast of the day was lamb and it was one of the best roasts I have ever had. Will go there again next time we are in Cromwell

Super accommodating establishment, the lovely lady created a traffic light jug for us along with fairly decent pub food. Menu is budget friendly compared to other places in cromwell, great for families. Karaoke on Thursdays. Plenty parking and space, pool table. Outdoor area, pokies and toy crane. Worth visiting again!

Great service. Felt like valued customers despite being low on staff on a Sunday. Had roast beef, which was tender and delicious. The portion was generous. Better than a pub meal.
Linda B — Google review
A great little pub, the brilliant choice of mostly 70s music plus the old stone and wood add to the atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Drinks are reasonably priced. There's a pool table and open fire. There's also a games room and TAB machine, but thankfully, these are tucked away!

A very friendly welcoming pub in the heritage area of town overlooking the river. We arrived soaking wet and were immediately offered a seat in front of a roaring log fire. The local beets were excellent.

Best loaded wedges, lovely and warm great service. Well worth a visit and a game of pool

Nice place and I had a very good steak with mushrooms sauce. The atmosphere was relaxed. Service was good and the barman was very helpful. Worth trying out particularly because the heat pumps on cold made it comfortable.
