Whakatane in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Whakatane, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Whakatāne is a small coastal town known for its sunny climate, river-mouth setting and easy access to some of the Bay of Plenty’s best beaches, including nearby Ōhope Beach. It’s a popular base for fishing, marine excursions and exploring offshore islands such as Moutohorā (Whale Island), a protected wildlife sanctuary. The town also offers short walks to viewpoints and coastal lookouts, plus opportunities to learn about Māori history and culture through local landmarks and guided experiences. Its relaxed pace and compact centre make it an easy stop on a North Island road trip.
With favorites like Whakatāne isite Visitor Information Centre, Julians Berry Farm and Café, and Baxters Cafe, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Baxters Cafe and The Wagon HDP so you can get the best taste of Whakatane while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Sights & Landmarks
Berry restaurant
Julians Berry Farm and Café, located just outside Whakatane, is a popular spot for families and berry enthusiasts. The farm offers pick-your-own berries and a variety of frozen options. Visitors can enjoy real berry ice creams, explore the playground, or play mini golf. The café serves a diverse lunch menu all under NZ$20. Additionally, visitors can sample award-winning beers or seasonal brews like the Merry Berry Cider made with berries from the farm.
Very nice place and worth a visit, for both kids and adults. They are located near Whakatane town and have got a fair dinkum strawberry farm. The desserts and ice creams available at the cafe are probably the best we had in any strawberry farm till date. There are so many options to choose from, and they are very affordable. A Mixed berry frozen yogurt, a strawberry sundae, Whittaker's, strawberry ice cream with waffle cone, and Greek yogurt with strawberries.....all these together cost us $50 only !!! We did order a few more protein smoothies and four different burgers as well. The pork and chicken pieces in the burger were very fresh and NOT just generic patties. Also to mention - there are multiple options for kids to play, and huge grounds. Basketball, baby golf, puzzles, slides, swings to keep them engaged
Sandy S — Google review
Great place to take kids for delicious ice creams and smoothies and a chance to run around and explore the activities. My sons (aged 2 and 5) had a great time on the basketball court, mini golf, and playground. Plus lots of time running on the grass under the trees. Relaxing for the parents and kids!

Went here for a kai and my favourite part, to visit the animals . Although it was packed to the max, everything about it was excellent. The Food, service and atmosphere was amazing. Got the Angus burger and 1/2 pancakes. Loved them both

Went to have a brekky for my partner's birthday, we absolutely loved it ! A classic bacon&eggs croissant, delicious ! But for us the masterpiece was the strawberry cup with melted chocolate, that was sumptuous !! Beautiful place to relax, enjoy a sunny morning, pick up berries, we will definitely come again ! And also the staff is super nice so I 100% recommend this place !

A family business with other staff that come back each season. If you’re in Whakatāne it’s a place that you must visit. The mini golf is very well looked after and the food is delicious.
Shona S — Google review
10:10 Great Atmosphere. Lots of things for Kids, mini Farm, Basketball Court and mini golf. Good coffee, and wait time was good given it was very busy. Lots of food and drink options. Lots of berry products. Very busy place but huge dining areas so easy to choose seats in 4 different dining areas. Whole place spotlessly clean. Lots of staff and different product counters so efficient prompt service. Easy spend an hour here. Highly Recommended.
Geoff C — Google review
Awesome. Must try the food, ice creams, fresh fruits, the animal yard. We’ve been eating here for the past 10/11 years. We’ve never had a bad experience. We absolutely looooove Juians! The food is awesome, the place is beautiful and clean, the staff are always ready to assist! We are very grateful that we can enjoy this place every summer, sunshine or rain! Great great experience!

We had to work to find the Strawberry’s, but totally worth it! Lovey activity to do and the frozen yoghurt was very tasty at the end! Lots more to do here to. Perfect family outing. As you can see, we had them on our Christmas pavlova. 😋

On my second visit to Javaman Cafe, two years after my initial experience, I was delighted to find that they were just as impressive as I remembered. The beverages, including coffee, chai, and caramel milkshake, were all excellent. The pulled pork burger stood out with its unique and delectable flavors. The staff members were exceptionally friendly, accommodating, and courteous. Additionally, the cleanliness of the bathrooms was worth noting.
Absolutely delicious food. Super friendly staff. A inviting atmosphere. We will definitely be visiting The Strant Cafe soon🥰

I came on a rainy day not much people out, service was super lovely!!! Clean and warm atmosphere I ordered the omelette with salmon served with two bread & A burger with buttermilk chicken served with fries and fresh sauce. So thank you so very much :)

Horrific, and that's without even being a customer! The (new?) staff have serious ANGER issues. Was outside waiting (for something else) and there was shouting and screaming inside, I poked head inside and staff were arguing. 10 seconds later stuff was being thrown around and staff from next-door nail place and passers-by came to see what comotion and swearing was about. AVOID. Appears new owners have taken as all new staff in there. Note, the business responded to review stating they were "closed" that I "misunderstood" and there was "unrelated" activity, see photo taken AFTER their incident at 1446 with open windows, door and signs all outside. . . . .
Ant L — Google review
My second time at Javaman, two years after the first visit, and still awesome. Glad to see they are still as awesome as I remember. The coffee, chai and caramel milkshake we had was really good. The pulled pork burger was really interesting and delicious. Definitely something different in a good way. Staff was really friendly, helpful and polite. Bathrooms was also clean and tidy. Definitely a great place to stop

I had a lovely Vietnamese pork bun at Javaman today - delicious pulled pork with fresh herbs and chilli in a bun. The crispy hand-made fries were amazing too. My only complaint is that I’m a slow eater and it was such a generous portion it took me a long time to eat! I’m still full now :)

Thai restaurant
European restaurant
Global Thai Restaurant & Bar is a down-to-earth establishment with a modest bar and dining room that serves familiar Thai specialties alongside European dishes. The restaurant offers delicious food at affordable prices, with options for takeaway and lunch menus. Customers have praised the pleasant atmosphere and efficient service, making it a great place for a celebratory meal or family gathering. While some have noted minor issues with vegetarian options and menu flexibility, overall, the restaurant is known for providing an enjoyable dining experience with improved food quality.
Amazing place. Loved the dinner. Will be coming here time & time again. The owners are also great and friendly. The food tastes very good. Thai spicy is very spicy so take caution ⚠️. Overall, a very good vibe and pleasant atmosphere.
Haider S — Google review
It was our second visit to the restaurant, after coming a few years ago. The kids ordered from the Kid's menu, which was $16 for a main or $19.50 which includes a drink and dessert. We ordered a variety of mains and entrées to share. The spice level is either Kiwi or Thai hot. We had to wait a bit before we could put in our order, as the kitchen was busy. Once we did order, the food came out fairly quickly
William L — Google review
Decent food, elegantly cooked and presented.
Ed W — Google review
Lovely family dinner for seven, booked couple days in advance. Very friendly staff, especially our waiter. Shared mixed starters very accommodating, mains came at a perfect time after this, piping hot. Excellent wine choices. Would definitely go again when visiting Whakatane.
Pauline B — Google review
Overall a bad experience and will not be returning. Two of our group didn't get their drinks long after the rest of us did. When we asked how long the drinks were going to be, we were told there was still a long wait because they were busy. One of the other drinks was flat. When we asked for a new one, they said maybe pick a different drink because they would have made the new one from the same bottles, and therefore taste the same... A couple of tables that were seated after us, ordered their food before us. The entrees were just warm. Scollops smelled off so didn't eat them. They took that off the bill, so that was good. The cheesy garlic and truffle ciabatta was just warm. Cheese was hard on top, like it had been previously made and then just reheated. There was a chunk of butter, still cold, in the middle of it. And it had pesto! Which was not mentioned on the menu. We were told about the wait on food but having to wait so long, only for the food to arrive just warm and underwhelming was disappointing.
Sara W — Google review
Very clean and friendly restaurant. Only downside was that the chief was uncompromising when it came to requesting vegetarian options. Also their menu and especially the 'tablets' that the waiter's carry around for taking orders needs more flexible options. Otherwise very good!
Shyam A — Google review
Fantastic little gem, tucked away at the corner of the Strand. Their food is very authentic. I have never had a better red duck curry before!!! Would highly recommend giving it go. Their prices are reasonable and their service is very warm and friendly.

I came across a visitor to Whakatane in a bit of a state she needed to get to the Isite to purchase a bus ticket to get to Taupo to attend an urgent family matter. I phoned the I site and asked what time they were closing and there was only a few minutes to go so I asked if they could please wait as this was urgent, and she was an elderly lady and although it was the end of their work day they kindly waited. The customer was so happy and thankful. This is the service we love to know visitors to our town can rely on. Thanks to the team I site 😊.

Wow! Best salmon I have ever had!!!! Husband raved about the eye fillet. The presentation of the food was so beautiful. Can’t wait for another special occasion to come again. We came all the way from Tauranga. They even cater for kids with a kids menu. Baru’s service was wonderful and he paid attention to detail. 5 stars!

From the moment we walked in, we felt warmly welcomed, and the ambiance was simply perfect— elegant and inviting. Baro was attentive without being intrusive, ensuring every detail was taken care of. Each course was a delight, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chef's creativity truly shines through in every dish, and it’s evident that high-quality, fresh ingredients are a priority here. We especially enjoyed the baked fish, which was truly a highlight of the evening. Paired with an excellent selection of beverages, the meal was flawless from start to finish. Thank you to the wonderful team at Roquette for making our anniversary so special. We'll cherish this experience and look forward to our next visit!

The cafe is known for its excellent service and delicious breakfast items like croissants and brownies. Despite some high prices for certain items, the cozy and comfortable atmosphere makes it a great place to enjoy a hot cup of coffee and start your day.
UPDATE 02/2022: Changed my rating to a well deserved 5 stars because of my most recent experience. Excellent service and the breakfast crossiant and whittakers brownie were to die for. I thought the prices were sky high...that tiny sausage you see on the photo is $4.00 each and eggs were more than $2 each...caught me by surprise as the extras are not priced on their board... However all is not bad as the creamy mushie toast was quite enjoyable to eat. Compliment to your cook/chef

Service was abrupt and grumpy, asked for one of the juices and was told quite rudely we are not doing then today. Settled for a smoothie which was ok, plenty seating both indoors and outdoors. Some nice artwork for sale hanging on the walls which was nice

Generally decent food and drinks but the staff could do with polishing up their customer service skills. A smile and not just dumping customers orders on the table then leaving with saying a word would go a long way to having returning patrons

Bought 1 coffee, sign said medium $4.50 large $5. They charged me $6 for a large. Gave me a number on a stick and told me to take a seat. 15 minutes later a lady asks me if I'm still waiting on something 🤦‍♂️. Finally get my coffee and walk down the street. The lid is slightly too big for the cup and doesn't seal tight so I take a drink and end up wearing it down my front. Would've been 1 star but the coffee was alright. Credit where credit's due.

Our party of three thoroughly enjoyed our lunch today. May got the blue cheese burger, which she described as sweet and irresistible... Only thought she would eat half but chowed down the lot! I got the GF AvaCowDo burger which was amazing, tall filled with avocado, two beef burgers and camembert cheese! My friend from Long Island NY ordered the ribs and was really impressed. The only downer was the strawberry milkshake, I like my syrup shakes and this one didn't have any, it was very bland. But I'd definitely go here again!
Rachael H — Google review
The chicken wings were delicious. Between a choice of either the asian or buffalo sauce, both were good in their own right. The buffalo was spicy and tangy, left a nice heat in your mouth after you finished. And the Asian sauce was like a teriyaki/ sweet chili/ bbq, it was sweet and savory. On Wednesdays the wings are 2$ each, so between two people we spent 20$ on lunch for 10 wings, half Asian and half buffalo. The food came out in 5-10 mins and they give you an entire wing. This includes a drum, a flat, and the tip as one wing, meaning more chicken for you. It was a great find for us and I’ll be back to try the rest of the menu.

Really nice premises. Indoor and outdoor seating. Friendly staff. I chose the @%#!ing good burger and was a little underwhelmed. Way too much lettuce and it seemed a bit thrown together. Although the beef was excellent, well cooked and good flavour. The burger definitely filled me up! I noticed there are other burgers on the menu which look much better, including a good range of vegetarian options. I will be back to try a different burger soon, and hopefully add some more stars to this review.

I ordered The Wagon on ubereats tonight, and while the Burger was really good, it came with a plain chicken breast instead of buttermilk fried chicken as advertised.... I couldn't figure out at first why it wasn't like the last one I had. STRANGE. Edited 3 months later: We picked up two burgers with chips to take to the heads last night - Our chips were so average with no salt at all, just dry plain chips. The Burger was just ok. Safe to say we won't be coming back for a while especially with some amazing competition in town, and at cheaper prices. Sorry guys.

Sri Lankan restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Whakatane, Babinka Restaurant & Bar is a delightful culinary destination that offers an enticing blend of flavors. This charming eatery features a diverse menu inspired by global cuisines, including tantalizing curries and savory dishes from Sri Lankan and Indian traditions. Guests can savor delectable options like kingfish steak while enjoying the warm ambiance created by friendly staff.
It is a Sri Lankan resturant and bar but they serve European and Latin American food along with Indian and Sri Lankan spices and flavours. The food is really amazing and delicious and so is the service. It is good for family and small to big groups. Outdoor seating available as well. As the bar they also provide taxi services if you get drunk. I felt that was nice for them the way they look after the safety of their customers.
Abhijeet K — Google review
Sri Lankan eatery at the end of the Strand which has a good selection of curries and other Sri Lankan & Indian dishes but also further afield, e.g. Jerk chicken, moroccan lamb & chicken parmesan salad. Hostess was polite & attentive. There are small tables outside under the tree, more tables in a conservatory type area at the front (which can get hot in the day despite windows open & a fan running) with more seating inside proper. Only annoyance was the small size of the mazza platter for the price and the content.

Great restaurant, especially if you have some members of the family who love a curry and some who want a steak. Sesame coriander curry was just perfect. Only reason for 3 star was service was slow, waitress was friendly but maybe short staffed, drinks took forever and we gave up on waiting for the desert menu and left.

I am not a reviewer.. BUT I have to say, ignore all other recommendations, this place has the BEST sushi in town.. I have tried them all. I have been down to Mr Sushi many times in the last few weeks and it has been consistently tasty and fresh every time. If you like spicy foods, the spicy chicken is just amazing 🤌👌 Highly, highly recommend.

There's plenty of sushi restaurants in Whakatane central and you'd think the busiest were the best. While I can't speak for the others where people were lining up, I can say Mr Sushi was up with some of the better tasting Sushi I've tried. I really liked the way they dressed some of their sushi and the flavours were really good. The shop front might be a little dated, but sometimes, there's a gem within. We set next to the counter and without eavesdropping, we observed some of their exchanges with customers, it was all very good
