Nestled on the southern shores of Lake Taupo, Tokaanu Thermal Pools is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. This charming spot features both private and public mineral pools, catering to families with a dedicated children's area that maintains a cooler temperature. After soaking in the therapeutic waters, take a leisurely stroll along the Tokaanu Thermal Walk, where you can explore the mesmerizing natural thermal landscape filled with steaming mineral pools and bubbling mud pots.
I recently visited the Tokaanu Hot Pools (Dec16/17.24) and it was such a wonderful and relaxing experience! The private hot pools are a perfect retreat, offering warm, soothing mineral water that leaves you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The staff were friendly and welcoming, ensuring everything was clean and well-maintained. The setting is tranquil, surrounded by nature, making it an excellent spot to unwind. The public pools are spacious, and the temperature is just right for a relaxing soak. If you enjoy history, you’ll also appreciate the cultural significance of these pools, which have been a part of the local heritage for centuries. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of New Zealand!

I always come here when need a hot soak whether In the in the public pool (with family and friends) or in the private pools (when i want to get away from crowds) I always enjoy swimming in the Tokaanu hot pools, they have pools of varying heat 🥵 from warm to scalding hot 🔥 for everyone.
Lex P — Google review
The private pool here is an amazing experience of natural hot springs — as if the earth itself is whispering warmth into your skin, wrapping you in a quiet, blissful embrace. ❤️
Lara G — Google review
Great walk around the thermal area before a soak in a private pool. The infrastructure is a little dated, and the stoney pathway into the main pool was a bit sharp on bare feet.
Graham F — Google review
The worst hot pools in New Zealand 💩 We bought 4 tickets to the private pool and paid 56$ for a room with a small pool and no shower. The place clearly needs a cleanup - there were hair and dirt in the water, and overall the place didn’t look clean. The staff didn’t tell us how much time we have, and there were no signs (including in the private pool room) how much time you can spend in the private pool. No clocks either - you MUST feel the time I guess. The announcement about the timing was absolutely unclear - we couldn’t understand a word. And when we are about to leave, a very rude lady knocked at the door and yelled at us that we are 20 mins over our time, and that people are waiting (why she didn’t come early or when our time was up??? - I have no idea). She was SO UNPROFESSIONAL! She requested me to leave the room now (I was almost naked and covered only with a towel) and change in my clothes in the toilet. I was almost kicked out of the room. That was the most terrible service I have ever had in New Zealand. I don’t recommend this place and never want to visit it again.
Evgeniia G — Google review
Arrived 4pm on a cold, overcast Friday, paid for a private pool. The staff are friendly  polite, and there were quite a few people coming for a swim/soak. Reception area looks inviting, well kept, tidy and modern. Would be good if they are able to freshen up the private pools as paint is peeling, and mirror tarnished so not visually appealing. Having said that, the price is relevant to condition of the private pool. We really enjoyed our soak. 25 minutes was perfect. Thanks
S R — Google review
A beautiful spot beside the river, surrounded by mud pools and hot springs. Extremely friendly people and beautiful private pools filled with water heated naturally underground. Be sure to check out the easy little walk around the mud pools next door, and stretch out after a private soak in the main public pool. It's a little slice of Aotearoa's own heaven
Andrew B — Google review
Lovely staff, clean private pool, and beautiful walk nearby. 20 minutes was plenty, and the staff gave us a reminder over the loud speaker so it was easy to know when our time was up.

Tūrangi Bakery & Café is a charming spot located on Taupahi Road, Turangi. This historic café, adjacent to the famous Tongariro River, offers a delightful selection of freshly made food with a fly fishing theme. The menu features homemade pastries and locally sourced produce, ensuring exceptional quality in every bite. Open seven days a week from 7:30 am to 5 pm, this bakery and café is known for its exceptional food and cozy ambiance.
Best pies this side of .. well just about anywhere. Huge choice of all types of meat and fish, molluscs and of course vegetarian options. Stick with steak and cheese or go more exotic? All are good- albeit slightly more pricey than a pie from the petrol station. Recommend let the petrol station do their job, save the pies for the experts Small dining room with some outside seats

A true Kiwi bakery in the little town of Turangi. I only stopped in for a takeaway coffee while passing through, but by the look of the food, this place is the real deal. A big selection of cabinet food ranging from slices, sandwiches, rolls, cakes, muffins, and whole cakes. Hot food including good looking pies, hot chips and chicken. Not to mention the fridges with cold drinks. There was also a selection of fresh bread available too. If you are in need of good food while in Turangi, this place is a must visit!

They made us a vegetarian panini in the spot. Amazing stuff
Flor P — Google review
Great bakery, huge collection of bakery items to choose from and very cheap. Pies, sandwiches, desserts, coffee, fish & chips and fried chicken, they have everything here. Cheap combos as well as cabinet food. Service is super fast and staff is lovely. Only it's got a very small seating area, mostly runs on takeaway. Venison pie, smokes fish & salmon pies are speciality. Love the fried chicken & fries here very salty.

Great kransky with mash potatoe and cheese. Gotta be quick though - they go quickly. Decent coffee.

Fresh food, chips made on demand. Sandwich’s was good. Pie was on the pricey side but well made with good flavours. Chicken and chips deal was good however chicken was a bit oily as it sat in the heater without being able to drip. Great selection of sweet savoury and pies.

Hare & Copper Eatery is a charming restaurant located just off State Highway 1 North of Turangi, New Zealand. The eatery offers a delightful selection of share plates, including dumplings, popcorn chicken, and bao buns. Their special menu for kids features options like cheeseburger and fries and mini doughnut with ice cream. The venue's indoor and outdoor spaces are marvelous, with a theme centered around hare and copper, fly fishing adding to the ambiance.
This delightful discovery transformed a seemingly ordinary town into a culinary gem. The five-star dining experience is not uncommon in bustling cities, but what sets this place apart is its exceptional food. The dishes were not only delectable but also remarkably fresh and innovative. When the weather permits, the beautiful outdoor dining area adds to the ambiance. The only suggestion for improvement is to enhance the lodge aesthetic by upgrading the tables and chairs, and leaning more into the lodge aesthetic.

The service was impeccable from start to finish. The viand here is absolutely delicious! Every dish we tried was bursting with flavour and cooked to perfection. Each bite was a delight, and the presentation just blew us away. It’s a must-try for anyone looking for something creative and satisfying! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🫶🏻

High end restaurant. Beautiful setting, it's worth the drive! We eat out all over the place a lot and this place was certainly up there in terms of quality of food and ingredients. My only criticism would be the size of the dishes was just a bit small, an average price of $30 per dish I felt they could have been a little larger guys. Drinks menu was as expected in a high end restaurant and all looked good quality. Highly recommend, and we will be back next time passing through Turangi. The honest kiwi.

Wow!. What a find! You will need to book. The food is amazing. A selection of handcrafted delicacies that need to be tasted to be believed. This is no ordinary restaurant. Superb setting. A hidden gem in the oasis of Turangi.... who would have thought. Outside lights and provision for family and groups in the games area. Indoor cosy wood burner. The desserts are very very moorish. A popular happy experience. We will be back next time.e we are passing through.

Absolutely amazing food! Gorgeous setting with lovely interior, decking and garden. Cannot recommend enough! A little out of town but so so worth it. Friendly staff. The food is of such exceptional quality. The chocolate fondant was the best I have ever had and the fig ice-cream was delicious.

Delicious food! You need to try their truffle fries. However, some dish portions could be larger for the price. Overall, it’s a lovely restaurant with a very cozy atmosphere.

We make sure we always come for lunch or dinner at Hare & Copper every time we come to Turangi. Excellent rotating season menu with a story behind the sourced ingredients, standouts for me are always Popcorn Chicken, Vegetable Dumplings (Seasonal), Warm Beetroot and feta salad, and the Duck liver pate with sourdough (special). Good selection of wine and beers including their own house brand. Lovely warm atmosphere, always has the fire going and a lounge to enjoy an aperitif.
Ruby S — Google review
Love this place! It’s in such a gorgeous little house which feels so welcoming! We sat in the little lounge area by the fire for a drink before dinner. So special! I was a little shocked at the size is the meals for the cost - two little venison sliders for $34 (in Auckland in similar restaurants you’d pay around $24 for a small plate like this) but everything was very tasty and the staff are lovely.

Korohe Horse Treks

Horseback riding service
Korohe Horse Treks offers a variety of horse riding experiences suitable for different levels of riders. The Forest and River Walk is a one-hour trek that takes you through spectacular scenery, including a memorable river crossing. Before the ride, there's a quick lesson on horse handling. For those seeking an unforgettable experience, the Swimming with the Horse trek provides breathtaking views and expert guidance during a 1.5-hour adventure.
We had a great experience on our River & Lookout speed ride. My husband and I have done tons of trail rides on most of our vacations and this one had some great sites at the top of the horse fields and through the river. The dog that joined us for our 2.5 hr ride and the wild horses we encountered were a fun surprise. Our guide did a great job giving my husband advice before taking us up into a couple of canters throughout the ride. Run by a lovely family
Becky Z — Google review
We went on the enchanted forest trail and it was such a fun experience, Nevada was our guide and she made us feel so safe and comfortable. The horses were so well behaved and gentle and knew the track so as beginners we didn’t have to do too much. Definitely reccomend! It was so 10/10
Electra — Google review
My boyfriend and I did the hour and a half extended forest and river trail and loved it. Nevada was an awesome friendly trail guide. Would highly recommend to anyone passing through. Had the bestest horse Maui, such a lovely horse to ride!
Lilia I — Google review
Today I had my first ever horse trek and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had! As someone who hadn’t been on a horse since I was a kid (and barely remember it), I was a bit nervous, but the team made everything so easy! John and Sam were standout guides—patient, knowledgeable, and full of that genuine Kiwi hospitality that puts you right at ease. They gave clear, step-by-step instructions tailored for a beginner like me, covering everything from mounting up to handling the horse’s movements. It’s clear they love what they do and care deeply about ensuring everyone has a safe, enjoyable ride. The team here go above and beyond, sharing fun facts about the local history and spotting wild birds and trout along the way. The horses themselves are incredible—calm, sure-footed, and perfectly matched to your skill level and it made navigating the trails feel effortless. The scenery? Breathtaking. We wound through lush bush and forests, with stunning views, and the river crossings were a magical highlight—cool water splashing up as we crossed, with sunlight filtering through the trees. It’s the kind of postcard-perfect landscape that the photos can’t quite capture. Based on what I’ve seen from other reviews, this place consistently delivers that wow factor: If you’re on the fence about trying horse trekking, do it here—you’ll leave feeling like a pro with memories to last a lifetime. Huge thanks to the whole Karohe team for an unforgettable afternoon! Highly recommend. 🐎🌿

We had the most amazing experience with Korohe Horse Treks this weekend! Nevada was an incredible guide - she was patient, friendly, and really made the whole experience - especially for Coco our 12 year old who rode up front with her. Out of our family of four, two of us were nervous riders, but by the end we were completely converted and can’t wait to do more! The trek was the perfect mix of stunning scenery, with everything from open trails to river crossings. It was the highlight of our trip, and we’ll definitely be back again. Highly recommend to anyone - whether you’re new to riding or already love it!

We had the most amazing experience today! The entire group was so friendly and happy... this experience exceeded our expectations and our entire family came back smiling. The horses are georgus and bueatiful and the Forrest and river was so calming experience. Would definitely do again 10/10
Lazaro A — Google review
River walk was lovely and exciting at the same time! Guides friendly and relaxed. Good to walk through the forest first so you and the horse can get used to each other. Recommended special experience and reasonable price. Enchanting in the fresh mountain air and spring sunshine :-)
Rebecca A — Google review
We booked the forest and river ride for my daughter’s 10th birthday together with my husband, and we were truly delighted. We received such a warm welcome, and the team checked several times to make sure we felt safe and didn’t have any questions. During the ride, our guides were very friendly and chatted with us along the way. I’m a complete beginner and had never been on a trail ride before, but the route was well chosen and the horses were calm and steady. The parts through the river were especially exciting, and I was so impressed that even as an inexperienced rider, I could enjoy something like that. Wonderful! Thank you so much for this amazing experience.

Indian restaurant
Monsoon Indian Cuisine offers a delightful dining experience with prompt service and delectable dishes prepared in a quick 15 minutes. The medium-spiced Chicken tikka masala and equally flavorful lamb korma are both highly enjoyable. This establishment is an excellent choice for takeaways in Turangi, providing a variety of tasty options. While it is primarily designed as a takeaway restaurant, there are also tables available for those who prefer to dine-in.
I used the word "outstanding" 6 times while eating this meal. I've been to India many times and my partner is from there as well. I was also a chef at one stage and I love cooking curries and trying new ones. I have honestly have never had a curry this good in New Zealand. I had the 'Do Pyaza' (goat) which was the best goat curry I've ever eaten. Cashew based so if you like Korma then you have to try this dish it will be the best you've had. Also incredibly well priced! Thanks for the last meal of our Roady, we will be back.
Damien G — Google review
We enjoyed our meal at Monsoon. Although primarily a takeaway, there are several tables and 2 conformable sofas. We ate off paper plates and enjoyed the food immensely. The lamb byriani was well nicely spiced and full of tender pieces of meat, the butter chicken was praised by all who ate it. I highly recommend Monsoon Indian Cuisine.
Kevin M — Google review
Very disappointing experience with the food. The naan was undercooked and had a tough, chewy texture. The mixed vegetable curry lacked proper preparation, and the Shahi Paneer did not meet expectations. The butter chicken was undercooked, and the chicken pieces appeared to be pre-frozen. I definitely would not recommend this place to anyone.
Harry P — Google review
We had an overnight stop in turangi and picked up a takeaway from Monsoon. It was definitely the best chicken Kadai I'd ever had! A lovely generous portion and naan bread. Definitely recommend
Linda T — Google review
Excellent tandoori and butter chicken. Delicious authentic Indian food. Nice friendly man served me. My second time at Monsoon, will definitely come again.
Jonathan B — Google review
Very disappointing experience. The food was below average, the service was slow, and staff were not attentive. Definitely not worth the price, and I won’t be coming back.
Harbhajan S — Google review
The naan felt a bit stale, and the paneer didn’t meet my expectations. Hoping for fresher options next time

Mango chicken was dry and chewy, staff was reluctant to let us eat at the tables for no apparent reason. Ants crawled around the seats. Front of the shop needs a water blast. Overall poor experience and wouldn’t go there again.

Nestled along the serene riverside, Tongariro Lodge is a charming retreat that offers cozy cabins and cottages perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure. Located in Turangi, this upscale lodge is just a short drive from the stunning Lake Taupo and the breathtaking landscapes of Tongariro National Park. Guests can indulge in various recreational activities, including tennis on an outdoor court or simply soaking up the views from the terrace and garden.
Very pleasant, responsive, friendly service staff. Superb dinner and breakfast meals (well above 4 star hotel standard). Peaceful grounds set amongst mature trees for the chalets and lodges. Bed was firm and very comfortable. Bathroom fittings and fixtures were getting a bit dated (only single glazing and older tap-ware) and may need refurbishing - but was all clean and functional. A private deck but it needs cleaning and some boards replaced.
Dave F — Google review
Staying in the Executive Villa at Tongariro Lodge was sublime. Over three nights my partner and I fished daily with an expert guide, then tucked in by the fire in the cosy bar and lounge where open fires and memorabilia celebrate its fishing heritage. Set on 22 acres of park‑like grounds on the Tongariro River, our villa offered privacy, comfort and views. Every meal – from cooked breakfasts to gourmet dinners – was exceptional. Guido and his team treated us like family, and even our executive retreats feel like coming home; our company has held two at the lodge now, and they have been our most successful. With its history, great value and unbeatable location, we will return again and again.
Nick B — Google review
We stayed at Tongariro Lodge for three nights in one of the villas and absolutely loved it. Everything was perfect - spacious, comfortable, and spotless, all within such a beautiful and peaceful setting by the river. The staff were friendly and went out of their way to make our stay easy and enjoyable. The restaurant on site was a highlight too - we ate there each night and the food was incredible (highly recommend the venison short ribs, salmon, and steak!). Breakfast at the lodge was faultless too. The whole place has such a relaxed, welcoming feel while still being really special. Can’t wait to come back - easily one of tour favourite stays.
Lizzy P — Google review
A lovely, private place, surrounded by trees and nature. The rooms were modern and extremely comfortable. The service was excellent. The ambience of the lounge and restaurant was restful and welcoming. The food was exceptionally good with a fine choice. The serving staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Highest recommendation.

One-night stay on the way back to Auckland from the south. Friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable and cosy room and bed. Sliding door leading to a garden with lovely view of trees and the local bird life. Coffee, tea and milk are supplied. Picturesque and peaceful surroundings. Breakfast was good. Sadly, my immediate neighbours in the chalet next door were a bit noisy. Electric blanket did not heat up, and the shower was temperamental (hot water not consistent). All in all a restful night after a long journey; left me refreshed for the last part of the drive home.
Alta W — Google review
Enjoyed a 4 night stay at the lodge - 1.5 days of guided fly fishing with excellent results. Would definitely return for another stay as Guido, Bobby and team could not do enough for us. Very friendly atmosphere.
Greg F — Google review
What a lovely lodge right on the river. We stayed in the chalet, and it was very comfortable. We used it as our base camp before doing Tongariro, and it was perfect. The reception was kind, our server was a charming young lady from France - we highly recommend the location, the rooms, the grounds, and the restaurant!
Kert P — Google review
The most pleasant staff greeted us on our arrival and the check in was smooth. Our 3 bedroom apartment was very pleasant and we had both dinner and breakfast in the dining room. It is important to our family of 4 to have a restaurant on the premises where we are staying. We had just departed a very unpleasant venue in National Park not far away so arriving here with Bobbie and the team was excellent. They made us feel so welcome. Cannot recommend this venue highly enough. 5 star

The restaurant Lakeland House Restaurant has a great view of the lake and is known for its fresh, home-cooked meals. The food is simple but delicious and the staff are friendly and attentive. There's also a good wine list available.
We stumbled on this lovely lakeside restaurant on our drive down to Wellington and were greeted by the lovely Nicola. She told us they had just opened 6 weeks before! My family and I had the best time enjoying the patio with views of the lake, and spent some time on the bean-bag chairs on the lawn. The best rest stop for our trip. The food was great too, we got a couple of the pizzas and I got the Gnocci. Delicious! Highly recommend :)
Alice H — Google review
The view and the front of house staff were absolutely lovely, but the lamb ragu was almost insulting. Cold, sour, watery, definitely not fresh. I was expecting the warm, comforting taste of a rich, flavourful slow-cooked ragu; didn’t find anything at all. The gnocchi were good but too few and they weren’t soaked in the ragu, they were just a few plain gnocchi sitting on the same plate as some barely-reheated pieces of shredded lamb. Definitely not worth $35, unfortunately.

Beautiful place, delicious food and good service. If you're staying in Turangi or passing by, this place a must to visit! We had lamb shanks (not in the menu) as lamb racks (in the menu) were not available. During winter, Turangi is best place to go, less crowd and peaceful. We stayed at Motutere Bay Top 10. We will return to this place in future.

The place looks almost too fancy for a young couple that just wants a hot meal after doing the Tongariro, but we never felt out of place. The service was excellent. The meal is good value for money although the main is around 40$. We ordered the Lamb and the Snapper. Amazing lake views. Reservation is advisable.

Best to reserve a table here. The best lake taupo restaurant that gives you stunning uninterrupted views of the lake. Quiet and stunning. Licorice Cafe was a delightful surprise. Stumbled upon it for a quick breakfast and was greeted by friendly, smiling faces. The manager's attention to detail was noticeable. While the dishes were familiar, they were prepared with evident care and love. A charming spot for a casual meal.

I was travelling from Wellington to Tauranga and had the worst lamb curry pastry, cost like $16 .from the cabinet It's like whole curry powder been put inside ,no flavour at all ,sorry to say if U can't really cook that cuisine meal ,don't even try . only thing was great was the relish on side 😂. I was really hoping good ,but I guess ......... 😢 If the price is high then please, at least have some flavours in food I noticed something as well,1guy had to wait ages for his takeaway (wasn't even busy )and a couple were dinning in had left so much on there plate ,seems like they didn't enjoy Just one staff in front was amazing, she new wat was she doing, multi tasking and kind . Would say great job 👍 Anyways it's always time to improve 😃

10/10 Service from staff here at this beautiful little cafe always warm welcoming, me and my husband always call into as it is a great half way point between travelling, outstanding food and addictive coffee!! Clean facilities definitely recommend to those planing their journey ahead or needing a quick coffee fix for the road

Unfortunately we saved our choice of stopping for our coffee and snack today on our way to Palmerston Nth It took 10mins just to order as we stood at the counter, by the time we got served we had decided the food in cabinets looked so uninviting or fresh Unfortunately we still ordered the take away coffee that was our second mistake, black coffee doesn't lie it's honest... and it was honestly terrible. Don't stop keep going.

Lovely spot off the highway. Very friendly service. Good food options and coffee drinks. Indoor and outdoor seating. Mostly focused on brunch items. Dog and kid friendly.
