Lake Matheson Walk is a scenic hiking trail that takes visitors on a gentle stroll through an ancient forest. The area boasts stunning views of Mt.Cook, also known as Aoraki, reflected in the lake. Along the way, there are several benches where hikers can take a break and enjoy the picturesque scenery. The trail is accessible for wheelchairs with some steep cambers along the route.
Very nice walk around the lake. It’ll cost you about 1,5 hours in total. And if you’re lucky you can make the perfect reflection picture. I was not 😅 But still enjoyed this walk very much. The path is just wonderful.
Femke C — Google review
The Lake Matheson walk is an absolutely breathtaking experience, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. This 6.5 km round trip took us about 2 hours to complete, including time to soak in the stunning viewpoints. The trail itself is well-maintained, winding through lush native forest with towering trees and ferns that create a serene, almost magical atmosphere. The highlight, without a doubt, is the reflection lake and the iconic viewpoint. On a calm day, the still waters perfectly mirror the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps, including the majestic Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, offering a postcard-worthy scene that left us speechless. The overcast sky added a dramatic touch to the landscape, enhancing the reflective quality of the lake. The gradual incline and flat sections make it manageable for most fitness levels, though sturdy shoes are a plus given the gravel paths and occasional muddy spots. Whether you're a nature lover or just after that perfect photo, this walk delivers. A truly brilliant way to connect with New Zealand's natural beauty!
Swapna R — Google review
We didn’t manage to catch the famous mirror reflection at Lake Matheson, but it was still such a beautiful experience. The walk itself is peaceful and full of natural beauty, and even on a cloudy day the views are worth every step. There are several great spots for photos along the track, and the café and gift shop at the start are a nice bonus. A few stairs along the way, but nothing too difficult. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the Fox Glacier area!

I visited Lake Matheson on a prefect sunny day 🌞,and the whole experience was breathtaking. The weather was clear and the hight light the reflection on the lake were absolutely stunning just like in the postcard i felt overwhelmed by the beaty of nature ✨️ all around me, the walking track is well maintained and easy to follow it took proximately 1.5 hrs to complete at relaxed absolutely love it ❤️recommended

Really nice walk even on a cloudy day. You need clear skies too see the mountains though. Kea were lurking on the roof of the cafe causing trouble.
Shaun R — Google review
Comfortable walk with a great view, a full round takes 1 hour, there are areas with benches with lake view, great for a quick snack and rest
Wong I — Google review
The Lake Matheson path is superbly maintained and a pleasure to walk. There is ample parking at the trailhead, and the route itself is beautifully laid out, winding through forests of tree ferns before opening to the lake’s mirrored views. The paths are in excellent condition throughout, with clear and consistent signage. The posted walking times seem geared toward those taking a very leisurely pace, but the terrain is easy and well graded. Benches are thoughtfully placed at the top of each incline, exactly where you would want them. It is one of those walks where every practical detail has been quietly and expertly considered.
Joseph P — Google review
If you're blessed to get a glimpse of the alpine mountain ranges reflecting off the water, it may be an image you'll never forget. It's absolutely stunning. The walk is easy, take your time and relax if you can while doing it.

Visitors can find a variety of reasonably priced items including prints by Bridget Hall. The store is known for its unique and carefully crafted gifts, making it worth a visit for those looking for quality souvenirs.
A lovely little shop filled with quality gifts and trinkets. Really good if you wanted to get a good quality item that is carefully crafted.

19/11/23: Gift shop now located inside the Matheson Café. This building is closed. Opening hours of café 8:30am-3pm. Could see a few items through the windows but much smaller amount than would've been in gift shop. If you're looking for a wide range of gifts then I'd recommend visiting one of the gift shops in Franz Josef instead.
Luna V — Google review
Very nice gift shop with unique items you don't see at other gift shops. Definitely worth a visit! Had a nice chat to the lady that worked there.

Not too expensive but gallery is a little disappointing, especially in such an inspirational place there's some room for improvement

Gallery is a bit of a stretch but this is a good gift shop with a nice range of reasonably priced items. Some usual tourist tat but plenty of quality items too. Lovely prints by Bridget Hall available here.

Disappointing. Sign on door says closed, open at 8:30am. Guess not open anymore. 3:00pm Monday so hours need updating on Google profile. No hours in window. Menu looks good though and would be a beautiful spot if open.

Lake Matheson

Lake
Lake Matheson, located near Fox Glacier in New Zealand, is renowned for its stunning mirror-like reflections of the surrounding mountains and glacier. It's a popular spot for visitors to enjoy the picturesque scenery and take leisurely walks through the ancient forest that surrounds the lake. The area offers various viewpoints where visitors can admire the reflections of the Southern Alps in the tannin-filled waters of Lake Matheson. Additionally, there are other nearby walks to explore, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts.
Pretty small lake, not far from the town of Fox Glacier, which affords fine views of Mount Tasman and Mount Cook, which with the right weather are reflected in the water. Even on a cloudy day, it's still well worth a visit as the 90-minute walk around the lake through the trees is lovely. Go up some steepish steps to enjoy the "view of views" and hope the clouds disappear over the peaks at the Jetty Viewpoint and Reflection Island. Worth noting that it's not a flat lakeside walk but lots of ups and downs. There is a nice cafe, shop and toilets adjacent to the parking area.
Nigel P — Google review
Lake Matheson is one of the most photographed lakes in New Zealand. At Reflection Island you will see the famous view, with the mountains in the backdrop and mirroring in the water. Unfortunately the weather gods were not in our favour and we had clouds the whole time we were there. Nevertheless it was very beautiful and peaceful! Many ducks in this lake as well. Took us about 90 minutes return.
Stephen — Google review
Beautiful setting . 10 mnts to the lake . Service was excellent . Food was great . Our scrambled were at a little too salty but the overall quality of food was great . A must visit place to come and eat and spend sometime in the surroundings 👍
Ravi K — Google review
This lake is by far one of the best experiences I have had. It is not my personal favourite lake in the South Island, but due to this being isolated in the West Coast, with stunning views of Mount Cook in the background are what make it fancy. The reflective lake is spectacular, and it really is a mirrored lake. The bush walk to and from Reflection Island is top notch, and easily among the best walks I have done in NZ. It is mostly flat and from memory takes around 30 minutes in one direction. It requires a minimum to moderate level of fitness. I highly recommend this attraction to all who are nearby!
Straan W — Google review
We enjoyed a lovely hike around the lake. It’s very tropical and scenic. A reasonable hike that is primarily flat.
Dale B — Google review
The walk around this lake is the perfect place to clear your mind. It's a straightforward walk without any difficulties and a well maintained walkway. The lake is beautifully situated overlooking Fox Glacier and has some of the best views on its surroundings. At the entrance of the walk you're able to sit and enjoy a coffee.

Guests appreciate the attentive staff and convenient location near Te Wahipounamu. The accommodation's cleanliness and delicious breakfast are highly praised, with last-minute deals offering significant discounts. Visitors rave about the stunning home, hospitable host, cozy cottage, and excellent communication from the staff.
We so loved this place, we stayed in the cottage which is at the back of the main building, very very cozy and had everything you needed. Loved the kitchen and the separate bedroom. Although we never met our host, she was very good with communicating with us, Good work Debs. We will definitely be back.

Small self-catering holiday accommodation. Perfect for stopping off on the West Coast for the glaciers. Very close to Lake Matheson. Quiet.

There are not enough words to describe how amazing the accommodation at Misty Peaks is! Absolutely stunning home to stay in with everything you could possibly need. Debbie is the most hospitable host. She made sure everything was perfect for us! We will be back to stay with our extended family sometime soon.

Love the host, love the views. We stayed on the mountain side view of the motel. Cleanliness is high rated. Breakfast was delicious as it was freshly cooked by the host. One tip, last minute deals showcase a 70 percent discounts on usual prices. The room which was booked for 160 nzd was 70 nzd on same day.
Aayushi P — Google review
Not very hospitable for people in the hospitality business. The bed and the breakfast were nice, but a host makes the b&b experience. They were strange about booking when we called. After a cold reception for an after-dinner arrival and rude, passive-aggressive comments while rushing us out, I'd say look into a different b&b or even a hotel. We stayed in the common areas to send some emails and try and book our next night and were continually pestered to leave. Not exactly the warm homestay we've enjoyed frequently in this beautiful country. To these people, it's just business.
Ashwin S — Google review
Stayed here for one night during our honeymoon trip. Neither welcome nor farewell of host were very friendly. Room was cosy but lacked several details we would have expected or were promised by this '4-star'-accomodation (i.a. 24/7 reception, TV, WiFi, bathroom night light & heated bathroom floor). Bad weather with no view whatsoever didn't help -- and clearly wasn't up to the hosts :) -- but the maximum appropriate rate for our booking (compared to other places around NZ) would have been 120-130 NZD.
P N — Google review
Lovely accommodation with incredible views of the mountains. Rooms were large and well presented. The evening wine was a nice addition and the breakfast varied and well made.
Tim U — Google review
Great accommodation. Very friendly staff. Don't expect the welcome drink and snacks advertised in the hotel info book at 6.30pm as it didn't happen. Also the checkout is 10am not 11am like it says in the same booklet.

The Fox Glacier TOP 10 Holiday Park & Motels is a popular choice for visitors to the West Coast of New Zealand. The park offers a range of accommodations with private and shared facilities. Guests enjoy good location, easy access to local amenities, and free self-parking.
Absolutely loved it. One night quickly became two. Amazing reception staff, friendly and nothing was trouble. Loved the family bathroom facilities, makes disabled showering so easy. Not sure I'll be back this way but highly recommend this park to all. 🙂

This has been the best Top 10 Holiday Park we’ve stayed at in New Zealand so far. Everything is exceptionally clean, well-maintained, and thoughtfully organized. You really have everything you need here, and it’s clear that the team takes pride in their work. What made our stay especially pleasant was the atmosphere created by the staff. Everyone we spoke to was friendly, helpful, and took the time to make sure we felt comfortable. A special thank-you goes to Mar, who clearly runs this place with great care and attention. Her kindness and calm presence really set the tone, and it’s thanks to her that the whole place feels so welcoming. Highly recommended—we’d be happy to come back anytime.

We had a brilliant stay here and can't recommend it enough. We booked the Luxury Two Bedroom Apartment, and it was genuinely fantastics. Clean, comfortable, and amazingly well equipped. Great value for money. The reception staff went above and beyond, offering a warm welcome and sharing fantastic tips for local walks and sights.

This place was a brilliant choice for our family, we booked a standard cabin and used the shared amenities. Everything was clean and tidy. The staff are amazing let us know everything we needed and even the road conditions the morning we left. The kitchen was so warm from a fire going at the end of the room. Our room was warm the beds super comfortable. The family shower room was amazing, we have never come across this before but it made it so easy for us with our son with limited abilities. Thankyou for having us we definitely wished we stayed longer and will be back.
Haley G — Google review
Wow what an amazing find! I am just ending my 3rd and final night in a standard cabin is the Holiday Park and as a single woman travelling alone it has been great. The staff are welcoming and friendly on arrival and that vibe just continues through the kaupapa of the place. Everyone staying here respects the facilities available and it is easy to negotiate the shared facilities even when it is humming. I highly recommend this top 10
Barb L — Google review
Unit 67 was damp and mouldy, this flared up my daughters mould allergy. Thankfully the nice young English guy at reception appreciated the problem and moved us after the first night. The park is in such an idealic location but the cabins are very dated and run down. The owners need to invest some money to bring them up to scratch. Currently they aren't value for money.
S M — Google review
Travelled here with the family in Oct 2025 - after having stayed at 5 different holiday parks this trip - we can honestly say this one was the best in terms of facilities and environment. As an added bonus all the staff, from counter service to the caretakers working in the background, were amazing and our kids felt very welcomed and comfortable.
K S — Google review
The views were really nice, staff were pleasant, unfortunately our neighbours in the caravan were constantly loud all night, just sounded like they were fighting and running up hallways all night.

Lake Matheson Motels is a laid-back accommodation option that provides a complimentary shuttle service and Wi-Fi, along with well-maintained barbecue areas on the lawn. Situated in Fox Glacier village, it offers a convenient location for climbers, hikers, and skydivers with stunning views of Fox Glacier. The motel's rooms are clean and equipped with essential amenities including electric bed mats for colder nights. They also feature a decently stocked kitchen and ample parking space right in front of each room.
Awesome motel, beautiful spacious room and the comfiest sleep/bed we had in the 2 weeks we were away. Very accommodating with our last min cancellation for us booking in on another date. Thank you for a great stay. :)

We stayed for one night in one of the cottages during our month long motorcycle trip. We are on a month long motorcycle ride around NZ, it was raining like crazy when we arrived at 2:30 PM. were thankful to have the overhead sheltered car park to load and unload the bike. Every room had a covered car park which is a great idea when you are in a rain forest. The cottage was basic but equipped for what you need for a few nights. There is a kitchenette with and hot plate and microwave and all the necessary dishes. The shower was hot with heated towel racks and the bed was comfortable. The location is close to town and in easy walking distance to Betsey Jane restaurant (amazing restaurant) It is had to rate the service as noone was ever at reception desk when we arrived at 2:30 in the afternoon. There was note taped to the office window telling us our room number, the key was in the room and have at it! In my opinion this is a basic cottage, a 2 1/2 star room with no service other than the fact that the room was made up for our arrival. The unit has all the basics for a cottage but shows signs of wear, the carpet in the living area is stained and the kitchen floor is sticky so your feet stick to it when you walk on it. This definitely detracted from the experience.
Roy S — Google review
Summary 4/5: clean, quiet and spacious room. Value for money. Room 4/5: Although a bit dated, but the room has everything we needed, including the kitchenettes (e.g. microwave and fridge). More importantly it's clean, comfortable and very quiet. I love that the sheltered parking is right in front of the room. No air-conditioning but there's a fan. Location 5/5: close to both the town center and Lake Matheson, yet away from all the noise! Restaurant available next door. Service 4/5: friendly and helpful, nothing to complain. It has self service laundry available (chargeable).
Jo L — Google review
Stayed at this self rated 4 star motels and couldn't have been more disappointed. Reception was someone of a ring doorbell with terrible reception telling us to go to our room but took multiple times to.get the room.number. we got to our room and the room was closed up we opened the door and a immediate smell of sewerage we opened and aired the room for most of the night and when we closed the room the smell was back immediately. Definitely not a 4 star motel. Rooms and service get 1 star but the location is good so that gets 4 stars.
Brett S — Google review
Rooms were abit dated but large and adequate. Really near to the center of town and walkable distance to Fox Glacier Guiding with whom we had a heli hike with. The room would be great if a fan was provided, lacking abit of air circulation when we had to leave the door shut at night. Checkin was a breeze though, they communicated instructions via email.
SuanSiang Y — Google review
Great location and well kept motel in a quaint township close to a host of cafes and restaurants, and other amenities to suit travelers on route to Fox Glacier, hikes and Lake Matheson. Great for the 1 night stop we made on route to Wanaka and Queenstown from Christchurch with our UK mates.
Hamilton A — Google review
Checked into the Lake Matheson Motel at Fox Glacier on 24/01/2025. The check-in was a unique, first time experience. There is absolutely no staff in the hotel! No desk clerk, no waiter, no room service boy, no room cleaners. They all come at 2 pm & leave at 6 pm. There was a notice hanging outside the reception office informing me, "Mundhada, your room is ready & open, keys are inside, tomorrow morning's breakfast is placed on the dining 🍽 table, WiFi password is 3enjoyurstay". There is no restaurant in the hotel though there are some nearby. Not even security, only electronic surveillance is there. Lake Matheson is a calm, peaceful, desolate motel. Rooms are good with a heater & a well equipped kitchenette. Toilets 🚻 and toiletteries were good. The toilet too had a heater & the towels were always maintained warm by electric heating. Breakfast was delicious. Christi was extremely polite and helpful.
Ashok M — Google review
We enjoyed our two night stay here. We got lucky and had beautiful weather which led to incredible views. The owner is very kind and helpful. The rooms have everything you need- very clean and basic. The beds have an electric bed mat which is a nice plus for chillier nights! They have a decently stocked kitchen (microwave & fridge & tea kettle). They are about a 1 minute drive from the main road- very well located. Each room had a parking spot right in front of the room. Good WiFi. Would stay here again!

Betsey Jane Eatery & Bar is a charming restaurant nestled in Fox Glacier, offering a warm and inviting ambiance. The menu features an array of delectable dishes crafted from fresh, local ingredients, including options like rib-eye steak and fish and chips. A standout item is the flavorful roasted garlic and pumpkin soup. Despite being in a smaller town, this eatery surprises visitors with its top-notch cuisine and lovely decor.
5/5 stars! Spent close to 3 nights between Fox Glacier and Franz Josef. Was recommended by a local to try the food here and it was truly an amazing experience if you compare the food throughout the 2 small towns! Firstly, service was impeccable. Staffs were friendly and attentive, more importantly the young gentleman (sorry didn't catch his name), was amazing. He was knowledgeable and extremely attentive. Food - was recommended the fish and chips and it was one of the best i had so far in NZ. Batter was light and fish was soft and fresh. Amazing with the tartar sauce provided. I also had the venison and it was definitely better than some of the restaurants i tried in NZ. Meat was tender and flavourful. Salad provided were interesting, combination of beetroot, walnut and buckwheat. Providing some form of crunch, freshness and texture. It is the best restaurant between the two towns! Highly recommend!

We ordered the beef ribeye steak, a vegetarian pasta, a side of vegetables, and for dessert, the chocolate mud cake. Compared to our experiences in New Zealand, the food was very enjoyable and well-prepared. From our own perspective, we felt the dishes could have used a touch more flavor, but overall, we arrived hungry and left satisfied and pleased ☺️
Racheli D — Google review
Probably the best meal we had in all of Fox Glacier & Franz Josef (and one of the better ones in NZ after 2 roadtrips I'd say!). The venison, medium rare, was well seasoned. Fish and chips was perfectly crisp while soft and fresh. Came early at around 5pm+ and didnt have to wait to sit

I don’t really expect amazing food in small tourist towns, but Betsey Jane definitely goes harder than they need to. Best quality to price fish and chips I had in NZ.

A sleepy hollow like Fox Glacier is blessed to have a place as good as Betsey Jane. It is a smart, welcoming eatery with an excellent wine list by the glass, a well-crafted menu, friendly staff, and quick, attentive service. A genuinely pleasant surprise to discover out here on the wild West Coast.

Like most reviews posted, we loved our 2 dinners here. It was an easy 5 minutes walk from our hotel even in a bit of light rain one evening. We had the steak and venison the first night and lamb rump the 2nd and we really enjoyed all of the meals. Service was friendly and attentive and the restaurant was full both nights. Prices are in keeping with most restaurants we have eaten at on our trip. Locals recommended we eat here and they were right.

This is truly the absolute best restaurant in town! The dishes are incredibly well prepared – everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. We actually ended up coming here two nights in a row because it was that good. Be aware that there can be a bit of a wait during busier times, but honestly: it’s totally worth it!

I dream about this place. The Matheson Lake Cafe is probably the most scenic place I’ve had a coffee and pastry. My husband and I each got a spicy chai. Fantastic flavors, you can tell everything is fresh. I’d love to come back here for a full breakfast someday.

Went a little out of our way to eat a late breakfast. We have been traveling through New Zealand for the last six weeks and this was by far the best morning meal we had eaten. My wife’s Japanese-style soy scrambled eggs and mushrooms came out perfectly silky and tender and my Osaka-style Okonomyaki was excellent. We watched Mt. Cook and Mt. Tasman loom in and out of the late morning mists and even though the place was busy with customers, it still felt cosy and wonderfully congenial.

Beautiful location, bright windows of the mountains. The food is amazing, I had the venison roll but the star was the salad. It had these delicious pickled grapes. The coffee is also very good and the waitstaff friendly and helpful. Overall great experience and stop after a lovely walk around the lake.

This place literally has no business being as good as it is being tucked away in the Fox Glacier region. We've literally been all over the world and brunched in some pretty cool places, but this was easily the best breakfast I've ever had. Got the bacon eggs Benedict and the Japanese pancake - absolutely stunning.

Arrived around 9 AM at Matheson Café, right at the entrance of the famous Lake Matheson track. It’s one of the most recommended spots in the area , and it definitely lives up to the hype. Coffee was smooth with beautiful latte art, and the Chai Sweet with cinnamon and spices was a nice surprise. We sat outside on the sunny terrace facing the mountains — wide open views with snowcapped peaks in the distance, and even the occasional helicopter flying toward the glacier. The wooden décor blends naturally with the surroundings, making the whole experience relaxing and scenic. A perfect breakfast stop before heading straight onto the Lake Matheson loop walk.

Came here to eat breakfast after a long morning hike, so my review may be a bit biased since anything probably would've tasted good. But man, french toast and some hot chocolate really did my life. Girl at the cashier wasn't the most enthusiastic person though. Still, awesome.

The food is lovely..... Staff is also friendly and served our food on time. Vegetarian noodles were available and also pasta. Besides variety of coffee and hot drinks are available. Seating is available inside as well as outside. Wash rooms are available outside. This is truly a relaxing place to have a good meal while travelling in South Island, New Zealand specially if you wish to visit Fox Glacier.

Roasted vegetable salad was swimming in sweet chili sauce - nearly inedible! Soup with garlic bread was decent & tasty, but $13.50 for that serving was wayyyyy overpriced. Staff was most unhelpful with my toddler's special dietary requirements. Even made me feel like I was a total bother to them for clarifying what ingredients are in the food. It's not like it was rush hour when we were there! Had to go to the other cafe across the road for help - and they went out of their way to help us.

Reading other reviews, idk why it's that low rated. It's a nice relaxed motel in a quiet place. Yeah maybe shower wasn't marble enough for some, but it's not a 5* hotel. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet inexpensive place to stay. Easy drive to the lake, beach and food (i would still recommend the cafe by the lake)

A lovely hotel with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and well-maintained. The host is truly exceptional—kind, attentive, and always ready to help with anything you need. Their hospitality made the stay even more enjoyable. Highly recommend for a relaxing and pleasant experience!

We stayed here in November. Hotel was very quiet and clean. We were the only guests staying 1 of the nights if our stay and had the hotel to ourselves. Not the best hotel I’ve ever stayed at but it was an affordable, clean and quiet stay. While it is towards the edge of town, it was still very close to everything.
Catherine V — Google review
Nice room. However, that is all that is nice. Place looks run down and in desperate need of refurbishment. Heaps of rubbish in the car park and general walk ways. Hotel staff were respectful, but looked like they were thin staffed. Overall, driving into the carpark was an immediate disappointment. No general spaces that were nice to occupy. The restaurant was not open at any point. A 4-star hotel rating seemed VERY generous. Unfortunately would never stay here again.

Never been to a hotel before where the sign had fallen down. Bed comfortable but non adjustable shower was not good for my 6ft friend - I was fine as I’m 5ft 1. Excellent customer service on reception

Decided to stay here as we were just passing through Fox and needed a place to sleep/shower. If that's all you're looking for then this place is for you...but there were some negatives.... In the way of kitchen, the fridge on the wall was really loud, so not ideal when you're trying to sleep. There were no plates or cutlery, the tea cup saucers were dirty, had been used and not replaced. Walls were obviously not insulated well as we could hear snoring from next door. Also bed looked to be a California King but it's actually two singles pushed together so wasn't the comfiest. On the positive, we would stay here again as it had all we needed for a stay over. Bathroom was nice and tidy, good water pressure. Friendly staff too and it's situated in a quiet, safe area.
Keziah W — Google review
Booked a family of 4 in to a room with one queen/king bed and one single bed. With two children aged 9&11 that’s not good enough. No couch or anything. We didn’t bother to stay, booked somewhere else down the road. Kept telling me it was clear in the listing, it shouldn’t be listed as suitable for a family of 4 in the first place as it completely unsuitable. Would have saved ourselves the extra hour of travel, no offer of refund or solution, highly disappointed.
Angie B — Google review
Pretty average accommodation. Clean apart from the rather large cobwebs in the windows (inside). Not much in the way of facilities. Glasses, cup & saucer with teaspoon. No knives, forks, cereal spoon, plates or bowls. So we had to eat our dinner with our fingers off of the saucers. Lucky we had bought a paring knife and breadboard from the hardware shop in the previous town. Loose gravel parking area outside of room which was quite noisy when other guest drove or walked in. No bedside tables to put things on. Bed comfortable. If you are looking for somewhere just shower and sleep, then this is the place. We expected just a little more for the price.

Fox Glacier Guiding offers year-round guided Heli Hikes and Ice Climbing on the West Coast's largest and less crowded glacier. The experience begins with a safety briefing and getting fitted out with equipment before taking a short but amazing helicopter flight to the glacier. Once there, visitors are greeted by knowledgeable guides who lead them on a 3-hour walk around the ice, teaching them how to put crampons on and providing an informative experience.
We had an incredible experience with Fox Glacier Guiding on our Heli Hike! We were lucky to have a bluebird day with stunning views from the helicopter flight through the valley up to the Glacier where we got to spend about 3 hours on the ice. The guides were all lovely and made the experience safe and fun! We got to slide and crawl through tunnels, explore crevasses and visit some beautiful blue pools. Just being on the ice and seeing the different formations up close was amazing. Thanks so much to Fox Glacier Guiding, would 100% recommend this adventure!

This was truly a once in a lifetime experience. We were so lucky to have the opportunity to e-bike and hike towards the Fox Glacier with two incredible guides giving us an unforgettable and humbling experience with mother nature at her best. Billy and Jake were amazing guides and this experience will always be something I will cherish forever. ❤️
Julie W — Google review
Our morning helihike was cancelled due to poor weather but they were able to reschedule us for the same afternoon when the rain cleared. What a surreal experience 🥹❄️ surrounded by deep blue crevasses and endless peaks, our guide Jake worked tirelessly to carve a way through the ice 🧊 for us. What an absolute legend. Sadly, it’s unlikely Fox Glacier will survive its current form for future generations due to warming temperatures so knowing the glacier is retreating makes this even more special for us. A rare moment in time we will never forget.

I hadn't been in the glacier in nearly thirty years and had such a great morning back on the ice!! Learnt a lot of new things, great friendly team and the whole trip was very professionally run with a safety focus. Plenty of time allowed for everyone to get photos in the different ice features on the glacier. My photos don't do it justice but a real must for those Instagram queens! 👑

Really a must try activity in NZ though it’s kinda expensive. But for the helicopter ride and 3 hours of hiking on the glacier, I would say it’s worth it. I feel safe throughout the activity and they provide good and ample attire and equipments to ensure you are safe and dry. The guides and the service staffs at the check in are all very professional and friendly.
Kah T — Google review
We had an amazing glacier hike with our guide Keely! She was professional, super friendly, and made the experience unforgettable. We felt safe, learned a lot, and had so much fun. Highly recommend!
Gil S — Google review
My experience was a dream. The check-in person was very clear with all the information, also the briefing pre-flight has all the needed info. The gear is very good quality. The helicopter flight is short but so much fun. Our guide was so professional and nice. He actually made sure that everyone was wearing all the gear correctly and made sure to clearly explain how to use everything. If he saw somebody struggling on the hike, he made sure to give quick tips to make their hike more comfortable (How to walk, how to properly use the walking poles...) I felt super safe at all times. I actually got worried when we arrived to the glacier because I thought the hike was going to be too hard for me but it was actually very nice. Even though we went up higher than usual (I had a very small group) I was so ready to keep going! I loved that there was no rush, they gave you enough time to take pictures and enjoy the view, but they also made sure to keep us on track so we could enjoy as much as possible. He took us to cool little ice caves and gave us a lot of fun facts. We were joined by a sherpa that has been there for 20 years who helped us go trough the toughest parts of the path. I think this was my favorite think I did in my 3 week trip to NZ.
Nayelin L — Google review
As a wheelchair user, I was blown away to find out there was not only a way to get up on a glacier, but to actually get out on the glacier and explore. Everyone at Fox was amazing in facilitating my accessible adventure. I genuinely sensed that they were as excited as I was to be able to make this a reality. I felt safe the whole time and had an unforgettable three hours on the glacier. Heitor and Fiona and everyone else were delightful. I highly recommend it. #accessible

Table orders for meals with drinks. Attentive, friendly and helpful staff. Quick service with generous portions of delicious food. My wife ordered the loaded potato wedges with a chicken wing side and received 8 mouth watering morsels. I ordered the pork ribs, they were well cooked and glazed. All meals served with a side salad and steak fires. Unable to finish, had to ask for a doggy bag.

Great atmosphere, great food, and great service! Came here after a long day of driving and did not expect much. Very cozy, nice looking bar/restaurant with lovely staff and amazing food. Got the Lamb Shank and shared Nachos and the Pumpkin Soup, everything was very delicious! The tap water is so good, the three of us drank like 5l of it because it was so fresh. The desert was an absolute banger! Had the Lemon Cake with Mango Sorbét and a hot chocolate afterwafds, could have this for desert EVERY SINGLE DAY!! Can only recommend, ate so much food I almost exploded.

Overall an enjoyable dinner. Service was quick and all servers were friendly and happy to be there. Food came out relatively quickly, although we did arrive early and there weren’t too many people in the restaurant. In terms of the food, we were pleasantly surprised after reading other reviews as it all tasted great.

I don’t like posting negative reviews, maybe it was just a bad day, but this is an exception. As others have suggested find somewhere else to eat. Service was non existent. Should have known from that. If you must don’t wait in despair, order at the bar. Food was beyond disappointing, my ribs were dry, tough and had spent a long time under a heat lamp before service. The lamb shank was also disappointing and the vegetables overcooked. Memorable but not in a good way. Absolutely our worst meal in NZ.
Paul F — Google review
We immensely enjoyed our lamb shank and butter chicken curry (we love our curries spicy so we asked for extra hot and they didn't disappoint!). The White Pub food was spot on! And their happy hour prices were welcomed too! It was so much better than Betsy Jane restaurant down the road.

Nestled in the heart of Fox Glacier, Cook Saddle Cafe & Saloon is a delightful eatery that exudes warmth and charm. This inviting restaurant is known for its exceptional service and mouthwatering dishes, including standout burgers and a chef's special seafood chowder. Diners will be pleasantly surprised by unique offerings like dahl and rice, adding an unexpected twist to the menu. The cafe boasts a beautifully decorated interior that creates a cozy atmosphere perfect for unwinding after exploring the stunning surroundings.
We had the pleasure of dining at Cook Saddle Cafe & Saloon during our short stay in Fox Glacier, and the experience was truly heartwarming — all thanks to Karolina, who welcomed us with such warmth and kindness. Even though our time in the town was short, Karolina’s hospitality made us feel like locals. She was friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about making sure guests had a great experience. It's rare to meet someone who brings that much heart into their work — she’s a true gem! As for the food, the Seafood Chowder absolutely blew my mind — it was my first time trying it, and now I know what I’ve been missing all this while! Big thanks to Karolina for the wonderful service. If you're ever in Fox Glacier, make sure to visit Cook Saddle — and say hi to Karolina if you're lucky enough to catch her!

Karolina is a true asset to this place, exceptional service, friendly and professional. The food was a bit of a let down. I ordered The pie of the day whichwas locally sourced Thar, meat was nicely cooked but unfortunately that was all I have to say good about the meal. We also ordered the Seafood chowder, the adding of turmeric was a nice touch but the over use of calamari was very disappointing.

The food there are absolutely amazing ! Highly recommend ribeye steak & fish n chips And the staffs there are all very friendly as well ! Had a great dining experience there :)
Kristin S — Google review
Ordered the Pie of the Day (chicken pot pie) from the specials board, expecting it to mirror the price on the menu of $21. However, when paying we were charged $39 for each pie. This price was not advertised anywhere and was completely unexpected for what we were served. This is a totally unreasonable price, considering it was served with bland boiled vegetables and substandard mash. Do not come here for a casual or decent meal, you will be shocked.
Taleah T — Google review
It was fine. I had the ribeye but felt it was let down by the garlic butter - imo the garlic flavour should be dominant but it was the butter this time. It didn't compliment the steak at all. I had the same meal at a restaurant in Franz Josef a few days before and it was far better for a similar price. I would be prepared to try the restaurant again but I wouldn't order the same.

Irecently visited Cafe Neve Fox Glacier and had a fantastic experience, especially given the chilly weather. The staff recommended the tomato and capsicum soup, and it was an excellent choice—warm, flavorful, and perfectly comforting. The veggie pizza was a delightful mix of fresh ingredients, with a tasty crust that complemented the toppings well. The fish and chips my husband ordered were also spot on, with crispy batter and tender fish. Highly recommend this spot for a hearty meal in a cozy setting

Cafe Neve, located on Main Road in Fox Glacier village, is a cozy and friendly café offering a wide variety of meals and drinks. The menu includes coffee, pies, pasta, pizza, burgers, salads, and a range of beverages. The café has a welcoming atmosphere and friendly service. It offers both indoor and outdoor seating, making it a comfortable spot to relax whether you’re exploring the stunning Fox Glacier area or just passing through, like we were. The coffee is excellent, and the menu caters well to different tastes with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available. We ordered a large pizza to share among the three of us, and it was more than enough. The ingredients were fresh, and the portions generous. The café wasn’t busy when we visited, and our service was prompt. However, I was surprised by the small surcharge on card payments. Otherwise, the overall experience was positive, and we appreciated the cozy ambiance and quality food.

Fox Glacier South Side walk (start point)

4.4
(238)
Nature preserve
The Fox Glacier South Side walk is a relatively easy and scenic trek that takes about an hour to reach the top. The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, with opportunities for birdwatching and photography. While it's longer than the nearby Franz Josef Glacier Walk, it's not particularly challenging. The path is broad and can be used by both walkers and cyclists.
Absolutely stunning views!! Plenty of different lengths of walks to go on. You can see the glacier in two different places on the main hike. The hike is pretty flat, a bit steep in some parts. I would recommend doing the Moraine Loop!
Theo W — Google review
A decent length hike with good views throughout and lots of forest and shade. You can get a good view of the glacier in a few locations. The Moraine Walk along this is a cool, short addition to see where the glacier had been before with signs noting years and where the glacier was. There are not bathrooms here so keep that in mind. The trail is well maintained and easy walking, gradual uphill and downhill. There was plenty of parking for cars, campers, and RVs.
Kiki S — Google review
If you have some spare time, it is definitely worth it to do this hike. It took us about 2 hours return to the very end. The detour through the forest was truly magical, like another world. The views on the glacier are nice, though we had many clouds on our day so you have to be lucky. Just so you know, after the glacier viewpoint you can walk further down to the river but there is no glacier view anymore. Still worth it and beautiful though!
Stephen — Google review
This is a wonderful walk. Strongly suggest is take Moraine walk which is a add on. Moraine walk gives you a feel of walking into a dense green jungle. Kids will really enjoy it. View at the end was really good. The walk is around 5 kms. Plenty of parking No toilet.
Sakthi A — Google review
As long as it isn’t cloudy you can see the glacier in the distance at the viewpoint. Easy hike, worth it to go to the end as you can see the glacier again and a beautiful waterfall to the side. Moraine walk was absolutely stunning like an enchanted forest
Beth A — Google review
Nice easy walk, but the glacier is still very far ;)). Took me 2 hours roundtrip. The most beautiful part was Moraine Walk (I'd recommend to take that path on the way back to the parking lot.)

Do yourself a favor and drive 15kms down the road to the "Fox Glacier Viewpoint / Te Kopikopiko O Te Waka", the vegetation at the viewing point here is at a level where it has completely blocked the view of the glacier, a beautiful walk for sure, but very disappointing! 🫤

The Asian Wok restaurant pleasantly surprised with its high-quality cuisine. Despite offering a diverse range of Indian, Thai, and Chinese dishes, the food exceeded expectations. Portions were generous, albeit slightly pricey. The service was prompt as the dishes arrived swiftly. Notably, the crispy pork belly with oyster sauce stood out as exceptional. Additionally, the chicken Thai Green curry proved to be enjoyable.
Surprisingly really good food here! Because they had Indian, Thai and Chinese dishes on the menu I thought they would be average, but it was beyond my expectations. Servings are large and a bit on the expensive side. Food came out pretty quickly. The crispy pork belly with oyster sauce was amazing. The chicken Thai Green curry was good.
Ken T — Google review
We got the green Thai vege curry with roti which was a good combination, however slightly expensive. Friendly and very professional service. Would eat here again if I had to choose a place in Fox Glacier.

It is good to find a restaurant with indian menu in a remote place like this. However it’s very very pricey for the small quantity that they serve. Also the service is very poor. It took more than 40 mins to get what we ordered and also our order for main course came in installments! Very disappointed with the service and the price! However I do have to mention that taste was good!
Arthy V — Google review
The food was tasty but we had to wait few minutes because there was no one in the restaurant when we entered. Except that, everything was good. I recommend you to have prawn fried rice and Singapore fried noodles.
활타 — Google review
Definitely would advise to skip this place if possible. Hugely overpriced for the quality and quantity of food that you get. Service is very poor. Beef vindaloo came with about 5 pieces of meat and no rice for $26. You have to pay 0.80c for a take away bag and they even charge you $2 for hot water. A complete waste of money and time (we waited over an hr for food)

Terrible restaurant, rude waitress, food was very cold when it came out, had to share a bowl of under cooked rice between 3 people and my butter chicken had 4 pieces of chicken in it and also had bones in it. We also had to wait for an hour for tiny portions of food which was all ridiculously over priced. Waitress tried to charge us for fries that never arrived and an extra bowl of very terrible rice. All meals tasted like something out of a can, the rice tasted like microwaveable uncle bens rice and all meals seemed like they were slightly microwaved rather than being cooked properly and served half cold. Not worth going here and would not recommend to anyone.

When we arrived, there was no one in the restaurant. No staff. No customers. When the server came from the back after a few minutes, he seemed nice enough. 15 minutes after we ordered, the server told us our food would be out in a moment. It took about 40 minutes before it arrived. Aside from the small portion of my dish, the coconut chicken curry smelled foul. I asked the server if he could smell the dish to see if he agreed, and he told me that I was smelling the celery. (The only way that smell was celery is if they retrieved it from a rubbish bin that had been sitting in the summer sun for 5 days.) I rarely complain, but considering we spent the next couple of hours concerned with the possibility of food poisoning I am making an exception. I don’t want someone else to be in the same situation. I worked in the food service industry for over 15 years. It doesn’t take that to discern the smell of celery from rubbish. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but this place has no pride in what they do and no concern for customer satisfaction. It’s in a small tourist town, so I doubt repeat business is of much concern for them.

This was honestly the worst restaurant experience I've ever had (and I'm not hard to please at all). When we walked in, the restaurant was empty. We still had to wait an hour for food. I paid $26 for 4 small pieces of beef (which was meant to be vindaloo) and the sauce was extremely chalky. There was no rice included, and I had to share some from my sisters dish. Everyone that came in afterwards had a major waiting time and it was quite embarrassing that there was not enough staff present. The waitress was asking people to go up to the counter to order instead of taking orders at the table which was very unprofessional. Other ridiculous rules: - no sharing food. - charge of $2 for hot water - 80 cent for a take away bag. - $3 dollars for extra sauce. Over priced and ridiculous portion sizes. Would not recommend to anyone. One star simply for the fact that I can't give zero.
