Swansea in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Swansea, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Swansea is a small coastal town on Tasmania’s east coast, known for its sweeping views across Great Oyster Bay to the Hazards mountains of Freycinet National Park. Visitors come for quiet beaches, coastal walks, and easy access to nearby nature reserves and wineries along the Great Eastern Drive. The town has a number of historic buildings dating back to the 19th century, reflecting its early colonial past. It’s also a good base for exploring attractions like Freycinet, Maria Island (via Triabunna), and local farm-gate and seafood producers.
With favorites like Bark Mill Tavern, Spiky Beach, and The Oyster Bay Restaurant, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Swansea RSL Sub Branch and The Oyster Bay Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Swansea while you’re here. Delicious food and great service. Dessert was so good we ordered twice. Place was full when we arrived and had to sit outside. But it was Good Friday and all other places were closed so no surprise.

Order the bacon and egg burger you will not regret it. Soft delicious 😋 😍 cooked to perfection. Curry pies are great too. Customer Serb with a 😃 smile. Great to chat to the ladies.

Ordered their famous brekki egg and bacon roll along with cap. It’s was just perfect!! Loved every bit and every sip. Can’t go wrong with their raspberry lamington too!! If you are crossing this place, then do stop for a pitstop!

We were there for Halloween night & some of the staff was in costume which made it a fun night. The menu has a wide range of options, including a kids menu. The food was delicious & nicely cooked. We liked it so much we went back the next night. They were very accommodating for disabilities. I thank them for seating us in a nice quiet area & still serving us wonderfully.
Tracy B — Google review
We ordered the seafood platter, bangers and mash, the bark mill pizza and drinks. The seafood platter was sold out but they told us quickly and helped us change it to the Tassie scallops. Outstanding. All of the food was fantastic, fresh and hot. We ended up taking the desert of the day to go as well.

The most tender and delicious Slow cooked Lamb Rump. Perfect dinner for the cold windy weather. Accompanied by a lovely Devils Corner Pinot Noir. We were seated near the fire in the bar area. It was busy as it NRL Grand Final Sunday. Meals didn't take too long.

Had a delicious dinner here! Everyone was nice and welcoming! Definitely recommend
Juliet R — Google review
Absolutely ridiculous to wait 1hr and 20 minutes for eggs, bacon and mushrooms. Another two people ordered fish and chips through the table, never got them! To their credit a refund was offered, and only one was refunded. Staff blamed the table barcodes for the inconvenience (as they were scratched out anyway), and got angry at us for trying to ‘get our meals faster through the barcode’. It was busy, absolutely, but you can still be nice to customers if it’s really busy!

Our family history is on display here so this museum has special significance for me and my family. Had a great visit and learnt more about family history and the area in general. Definitely worth a visit.

We were stopped for a chat by the lovely Tammy this morning as she was outside putting up the flags… after a good chat we decided we would have a look through the museum, it was amazing and full of history! Tammy also provided some great local information on places to visit around Tassie on our road trip. Thanks for the great chats and knowledge.

Please stop in to this amazing and informative museum when in or passing through Swansea. Such a wonderful collection of local, military and indigenous history. The walk through displays are very well done. Donation entry at reception or free. Thanks to everyone who has created & continues to preserve our history.

This is such a ‘must do’ stop for anyone’s travels in or through the area as we did recently as a family including 2 kids - there really is something for everyone here. Was pleasantly surprised by the diversity and richness of the exhibitions in general and each of us certainly walked away more informed and/or thought-provoked. Staff were also very professional and willing to engage in conversation with visitors and answer any particular queries. Entry Fee by donation very generous to accomodate all budgets.

Hiking area
The Loontitetermairrelehoiner Track is a delightful 2.3km circuit that showcases the natural beauty of Tasmania, particularly around Waterloo Point. Named after the local Aboriginal people, this track offers breathtaking views of the bay and Freycinet Peninsula. As you stroll along the coast, you'll encounter vibrant wildlife such as seagulls and black cockatoos while enjoying serene moments by the water's edge.
We really liked Swansea and this little walking track took us alongside the golf course around the bay & headland, then through a couple of cemeteries & back into town. Highly recommended
Colin S — Google review
Really enjoyed the walk along the coast on this track. Definitely recommend if you're in the area. We were lucky enough to have good weather - not cold, not windy. Just a relatively easy walk into town (we came from Schouten beach and only walked the coast part). Along the way we saw seagulls, black cockatoos, currawongs, and rosellas.
Sean H — Google review
This is a one of the 60 Great Shot Walks in Tasmania named after a local band of Aboriginal people that resided in the area when Europeans first arrived and started settling around the Swansea area. The track takes in the coastline from Waterloo Beach around Waterloo Point to Schouten Beach in Swansea. You can continue a full circuit track that circles back through town to complete the 2.3 km route. The walk is very easy and relaxing, particularly around the point where you take in fine seascape views. You can see Freycinet Peninsula in the distance as well. There are a few memorials at the southern end of the point, some interesting birdlife activity along the pathway that you can read about along the way as well.

Spiky Beach is a remote sandy beach surrounded by low hills and features a rocky shoreline with rough surf. It's known for its calm turquoise waters, white sand, boulders, and cliffs splashed with orange lichen. The beach is located just across the highway from Spiky Bridge and offers a picturesque backdrop for social media posts. Visitors are advised to keep an eye out for the landmark Spiky Bridge as it serves as a guide to the area.
Nice place to do a quick stop on the way to Freycinet natural park. There is a parking and just a short (50m) walk down to the beach

Spiky Bridge

4.3
(601)
Historical landmark
Located just south of Swansea, Spiky Bridge is a fascinating piece of colonial architecture constructed by a convict road gang in the 1840s. This quirky bridge, made from local fieldstone, stands as a testament to the convicts' hard work and is shrouded in mystery due to the presence of spikes whose purpose remains unknown. Adjacent to the highway, there's also an unsealed car park leading to the beautiful 100-meter-long Spiky Beach.
A wonderful piece oh history. It is ĺn great repair. Well worth the small turn on the highway.
Howard W — Google review
Stopped here on the drive up to Bicheno recently in late March. The spikes make it a very unique bridge. Not much else around except cattle grazing at nearby farm. But it was a beautiful day to just walk about.
Google L — Google review
Love a bit of history. This amazing bridge was built with the help of convicts to give access up the east coast. A good solid job & a quirky addition with the spikes! Found just off the road, parking available but not much space if towing a caravan when others are there.
A W — Google review
good to stop for 20min before continue to wineglass bay. Can know about some history of the place and the convicts.
Gee-Choon L — Google review
What a cool little bridge with quite an interesting history, though no definitive explanation for why it has spikes on top. Could be better signposted, but there was ample parking
Pamela M — Google review
A nice stop along the Great Eastern Drive of Tasmania. A bit of history of the bridge - it was built after an unpleasant journey by an important man then. 😂it’s also Funny that no one knows what those spikes function were!!

The Swansea RSL Sub Branch offers a variety of meals and drinks at reasonable prices. Despite a busy atmosphere, customers can enjoy their meals in the bar area, which has modest decor. The portions are impressive in terms of size and quality, and there is flexibility with ingredient substitution due to a chip shortage. With 4 drinks and 2 mains costing $88 in total, it is considered great value for money.
I love RSLs and Swansea RSL delivered in spades. Great atmosphere, awesome staff and great food.

Stayed in Swansea a couple of nights. There is not a lot around in the town for food options. A lot of places are closed or only open on certain days of the week. Thought I would try the RSL bistro for dinner one night, only to be told the Bistro is closed until September when I gotbthere. Even though google and website says bistro is open. Was disappointing.

Fish & chips restaurant
The Oyster Bay Restaurant is a charming spot located in Swansea, offering delicious fish and chips as well as an array of delectable pastries. The establishment has a cozy ambiance with whitewashed stone walls and a display case showcasing handcrafted pastries, creating a reminiscent feel of a French village. Visitors can enjoy their meals on the front verandah while relishing the light and crispy batter on the fish along with delightful chips.
The best most tender calamari I've ever had. Chips were crunchy. Fish was good but was overshadowed by the melt in the mouth calamari.
DJ T — Google review
Anytime that a fish and chip shop tells you they don't do large orders of chips bundled up in butchers paper, you can't help but feel disappointed. That is half the experience!! The alternative? Paper bags in two sizes, "small" and "large" served on a Styrofoam style tray. The fish and chips were fine, just not really "large" as suggested by serve size. Should really be "small" and "medium". At $14.50 per serve for a large fish and chip you don't want to still be hungry afterwards, we were.
Steve M — Google review
Wow! An authentic French patisserie and great coffee as we passed through from Bicheno to Hobart.
Joanne L — Google review
I've visited Swansea a couple of times a year for the last couple of years and have enjoyed seeing this place evolve. The owner's vision for the business is evident and on entering the shop today and seeing the whitewashed stone walls and display case of handcrafted pastries, we felt transported to a French village. We enjoyed flathead and chips on the front verandah (the lightest, crispiest batter on the fish and delicious chips). The order arrived quickly and when we asked for two glasses of ice so we could share a ginger beer, it was no trouble - out came two full glasses of ice. The recent opening of the art gallery next door (the owner's young son is the talented artist) is a bonus to enjoy after a meal. We couldn't resist buying some of the handmade pastries and tarts to take with us - they are little artworks in themselves.

The potato cakes are quite decent, but there’s better ones out there with better batter. This is more like fish and chip batter. Meanwhile they are quite fast in their service, which is greatly appreciated
Han L — Google review
I don't usually leave reviews but when I do I like to leave positive ones but unfortunately this isn't one of those occasions. The service I received today from the lady behind the counter was not the best, not very welcoming and was very blunt, no smile and definitely lacking customer service skills. From other reviews I have read it seems to be an issue that they are aware of but clearly don't care about. The food I had was okay but was nothing special and the price was a little high for what I got but I do understand that being a small town it may be a case of having to charge that bit extra. All in all I think it would have been a lot better experience had the service been more welcoming.
Chris S — Google review
My wife and I got the fish and chips for two, which was painfully average at best. Chips were undercooked and still had the frozen taste to them. Everything was oily and under-salted, apparently there‘s a condiment station but only found out after reading reviews. Potato cakes were somehow crunchy yet cold. Fish and dim sims were fine I guess. The service was not great at all. Staff shouldn’t be complaining about customers and emails they’re receiving whilst having new customers in store and within earshot. Sure it could’ve been a bad day, but from the other reviews I don’t think so. Glad we won’t have to eat there again.
Andre H — Google review
Wow, this was a serious disapointment. On Thursday 24/10/25 1.45 We decided to have Fish and chips for two @ $35.00 and a serving of 6 Oysters Kilpatric @ $18.00 I was advised a 15 min for the order. After that time our meal was placed into a coles paper bag. We went for a 5 minute drive beside the water. To find the Kilpratric oysters were not cooked at all. The fish was 25mm thick x 100mm x 100mm two good portions, but the batter was soggy and causing chips and dim sims to be the same way. No browning was seen on the dim sims indicating little time cooking. I returned back to the outlet asking about why the oysters were not cooked. The answer was stupid and rediculus. I did eat the oysters, but the bacon was raw and so were the oysters. If I wanted Raw oysters kilpatric I would have ordered tham that way. I was then accused of lying eventhough I returned the oysters shells and raw bacon pieces as proof. Showing no heat at any stage was applied. I would also like to mention serving raw bacon can make people very sick. I'm also a cook and know the health dangers you could have caused. A simple Sorry and paid me back for this dish would have been fine, but I'm going to the health athorities about your blatent arrogance and lies. You need overview your work practices, as you have so many complaints. I was very impressed on the walk in. Very dissapointed on the OUT. Regards, Jason Amy

Piermont Retreat is a serene resort in Tasmania offering minimalist accommodations and stunning views of the sea. The property features two private beaches, a tennis court, and a posh eatery called the Homestead Restaurant. Guests can enjoy delicious dishes paired with local wines while taking in the breathtaking scenery. Visitors have praised the attentive staff and highly recommend this hidden gem for a relaxing getaway or special occasions like anniversaries. The retreat is conveniently located just 1.
I’ve stayed at Piermont a few times now and it never fails to work its magic. There’s just something about the setting — that quiet stretch of coastline, the cottages nestled into the dunes — it feels worlds away. On our most recent visit, my partner and I brought his mum who was visiting from the US, and we stayed in one of the two-bedroom stone cottages. It was absolutely beautiful. The fireplace kept us cosy, and we spent slow mornings just soaking in the atmosphere. There’s so much to do right on site — I even took one of the kayaks out and went fishing in the bay! The restaurant is excellent, and the whole place is run with such warmth and care. The team make you feel like you’re right at the heart of it all. Piermont is a truly special place. We can’t recommend it enough.
Ben L — Google review
The location is great, the view from the room and walk along the beach is beautiful. The service was good apart from the cocky waiter in the restaurant who seemed to think he controlled our pallet requirements. The room was ordinary in cleanliness as there was food residue on the rug in the lounge room, general lack of vacuuming everywhere throughout the Pampa Costa. The bed was hard. Extremely hard and when we asked if there was a topper or similar the simple answer was No. I think there needs to be an ability to meet the needs of those with bad back or just like a softer bed than the hard mattress we encountered. It was okay and this wasn't the first time we stayed here, but it will be our last.
Scott F — Google review
Beautiful location with scenic views. The retreat is beautifully landscaped and has a private beach if you are wanting to have a walk. Words cannot describe how stunning this part of the world is. Staff were very helpful and provided a great experience. Cannot recommend enough.

We stayed at Piermont for 2 nights. It was such a peaceful place that once we arrived we didn’t leave. Staff in both reception and restaurant were kind and friendly. Definitely order the pasta making kit to cook during your stay.

If you're looking for a relaxing cottage experience where you can enjoy gorgeous water views right from your room then Piermont is just that. We came from Sydney to unwind and to recharge and piermont was just perfect. Our favourite part was that they had a private beach on the property where we enjoyed a gorgeous walk and even spotted a wild echidna. We'll definitely be back in the future!

Stayed at the beginning of June. Nice location but hugely over priced for what it was. We had a cottage for two nights that had leaks from the ceiling and also from a side wall into the bath itself. We notified the staff but got a pretty lukewarm response and have seen some other reviews that imply the leaks aren’t a new thing. Also just a weird shortage of fire wood for cabins that have fireplaces, had to take some from the public bbq area to keep ours going as all the supply we had was soaking wet. Restaurant though was a highlight, particularly Pascoe the guy who served us, he was fantastic and so was the food.
Regan H — Google review
To be honest, my impressions are mixed. On the one hand, it’s a nice, cozy house with a beautiful view. On the other hand, the hospitality of the hosts was really lacking. We arrived late due to the weather, and since the nearest restaurant is a 10-minute drive away, they were already closed. It would have been nice to find at least something simple for breakfast in the house — even a croissant. P.S. The house costs $700 per night. P.P.S. Along with the keys, we were given a tiny bag of gummies….
Elena — Google review
Magical setting, very nice comfy cottage with everything we needed. The washing machine and dryer in the room came in really handy! The lady at the desk when we arrived was really friendly and helpful. I took a start off mainly because, despite us putting the do not disturb sign on, housekeeping did not respect our privacy and came and did the room anyway talking the sign back in... At that price point, the last I would expect is for them to respect guests' privacy.
