Innisfail in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Innisfail, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Innisfail offers a rare mix of art deco architecture, tropical riverside scenery and rich agricultural landscapes of sugar cane and bananas. It’s a convenient base for exploring nearby natural attractions, including Wooroonooran National Park, Josephine Falls, the Mamu Tropical Skywalk and Paronella Park. Situated between Cairns and Mission Beach, the town gives easy access to both rainforest and reef day trips. Its multicultural community, particularly strong Italian heritage, is reflected in local food, festivals and historic buildings.
With favorites like Masala Bite Innisfail, Innisfail Museum, and Artropica Innisfail Studio Gallery, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like The Crown Hotel and Innisfail RSL Club so you can get the best taste of Innisfail while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Barrier Reef Motel

Motel
Located in Innisfail, the Barrier Reef Motel is a top choice for accommodation in the area. This Golden Chain Classic motel offers 41 air-conditioned units and 2 fully self-contained family units. The rooms are clean, quiet, and equipped with new furnishings, comfortable beds, microwaves, mini fridges, and French presses for coffee. The outdoor saltwater pool provides a relaxing spot to unwind.
Staff was very accommodating, Well maintained motel

Well tried to get a room no answer so just drove there. The site was unattended ( this was a Saturday around lunch) rang again and was told to pick up a key from the service station just out of town. After getting our key and sitting in our room ( which was clean) we realised the aircon wasnt working, so rang and asked for another room. This aircon wasnt any better sadly. We just sweated the night out as couldnt be bothered by this stage to pack up again and move to yet another room. Staff told us they'd been having alot of issues with the aircons as its been so hot if that makes sense. Get up in the morning to make a coffee and the coffee satchels were so old the coffee had hardened and had mould covering it, not even a complimentary milk in the fridge. For $170 per night for 2 people i found it very overpriced. The driveway getting in and out is horrible so be careful or you'll damage your car. Wont be going back.
Rachael S — Google review
Chosen for proximity to Paronella Park. Staff ( both front desk & room cleaners) helpful & polite. Rooms comfy with extras we like- tea, coffee, biscuits, tissues & TV with a movie channel. Only quibble, it's easy to scrape average cars on the deep gutter coming & going.
Diane C — Google review
We have used this hotel for many years for business. Since the new owners took over the food declined but recently in Sept 2024 we had an employee staying there. Upon checking in he found a USED NEEDLE on the table. When alerted staff they moved his room. When his dinner arrived it was cold as they delivered to the OLD ROOM and it wasn't till another complaint looking for the mean the staff realised. I can't even imagine if I was here with my young children and they picked up the needle.. When our company formally complained there was no care. We as a company and word by mouth will never use this hotel again.
Sue S — Google review
Second time staying here. First time was really nice but this last time, not too good. Main reason was the change in room. Not a fan of the upstairs rooms. Very noisy, air-con and fan make loud noises. Ask for a ground level room and you will enjoy your time.
Jason C — Google review
Walking distance to shops and centre of town. Basic room with free to air TV, bar fridge, microwave, jug, ceiling fan and AC. Decor is dated but clean linen and comfortable bed. Tea, coffee, sugar, milk pods and biscuits provided along with hand wash and body wash. Glasses, coffee cups and teaspoons only. Parking onsite and security on windows. No daily service. Would have been nice to have a toaster, plates, bowls and cutlery. Suitable for a short stay. My room was at the back of motel and was quiet. No WiFi or cable TV.
Paul — Google review
Stayed for work, small room with nothing overly special when compared to other motor inns. But room is clean and tidy. Nightly Resturant left alot to be desired however they did a great job on breakfast. Very tight car parking espically for SUV or 4wd. Some overnight noise from being so close to highway.
Denelle C — Google review
Right on the Bruce highway sharp driveway. Low carports they don't fully cover the cars but plenty of parking inside. Lovely pool. Restaurant on site but not always open. Clean comfortable rooms, only a couple with cooking facilities.

Alladin’s cave, the hours are unusual, but persist. Called, left a message, got a call back and arranged a time. The service received to get my painting framed up in time couldn’t be bettered. Look forward to framing next work.

Black Marlin Motel Innisfail

3.7

Motel
The Black Marlin Motel in Innisfail offers simple yet comfortable rooms with patios, an outdoor pool, and BBQ facilities. While some guests found the property a bit worn-looking, they appreciated the warm welcome and clean accommodations. The motel's convenient location near the town center was praised by many visitors. Some suggested improvements such as stronger Wi-Fi and indigenous flags in the park nearby. Overall, guests were satisfied with the tidy rooms, comfortable beds, and courteous staff at this quaint inn.
Mary Lou was very helpful when I turned up. She gave me her last room at a major discount. Room was lovely and clean and very close to everything here. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality.
Melissa T — Google review
Bookings.com says you get a welcoming gift. (welcome gift of hand-made rocky road and a piccolo of sparkling wine). Nope we got a WHAT DO YOU WANT welcome. Kid running around naked and a broken statue in the pool area. This place is getting run down and a lot of things need fixing.
Ashley W — Google review
When arriving at this hotel back in Feb (boiling hot day) our booking was two separate rooms. One room had a mildly cool - not working properly air con and my room had poor maintenance (bathroom door almost fell off), milk in the fridge for my tea had a straw in it and a empty bath gel dispenser in the shower (lucky I bought my own). After about an hour trying to ring the Manager, we advised her that we were not staying the next night due to the cleaning obviously not done (or checked) and the poor working of the air con. The Manager agreed to refund our 2nd night. I have texts from her to say she is happy to approve the refund and to arrange it through booking.com. Booking.com have tried several times to obtain the refund however it would seem the Manager had no intention of providing a refund and just ignores them. My advice is if you are thinking of staying here - just don't. Stay at the Barrier Reef Motel - much better.
Suzanne P — Google review
Mary-Lou has been an absolute Godsend with sorting us out for accomodation last minute. We’ve moved up from Mackay to find our rental property and then subsequently our temporary accomodation leaking from the roof and aircon. Mary-Lou sorted us out at very short notice and was nothing short of exemplary in her service and hospitality. 10/10 stay in Innisfail

The rooms was very clean. Linen and towel good quality. Shower water pressure was fantastic and hot water lasts forever. Had complimentary water, chocolate, cookies and Champagne. Tastefully decorated and pet friendly. Reception staff was very welcoming. Highly recommended.

Exceptional service provided by manager -ML. Thanks again for accommodating us very last minute. The cleanliness, location and ammenities perfect for the weary travellers.

22/7/2019 Room 2. This is an old building. The owners have done a tasteful refurbishment to the smallish room. Small complementary bottle of bubbly and a couple of chocolates was a nice touch. The beds are comfortable, the room is clean. The shower is hot. There is only 1 chair (room sleeps 3). Plenty of coffee sachets but no tea, no toaster or microwave. Found a wet patch on the floor at the ensuite doorway – suspect the air conditioner drain is blocked? No hand towel or bath mat.
Niall R — Google review
Stopped here after many days on the road and needed a break to do nothing. Very glad I did. Cool, quiet and tastefully decorated. It felt comfortable and clean. The wine and chocolate was a nice touch, as was the fresh milk and tea and coffee available, with the kettle already filled. Like most motels, I think if you had noisy neighbours that would be a problem but I fortunately did not. Would recommend. Thanks for a rejuvenating stay.

Located on Ernest Street in the heart of Innisfail, Moondarra Motel offers budget-friendly accommodation just a short 5-minute walk from the picturesque Johnstone River. Guests have praised the pleasant and accommodating staff who go out of their way to meet their needs. The rooms are described as fresh, clean, and spacious with all necessary amenities. The motel's convenient location near dining options and shops makes it suitable for both business and leisure travelers.
Would highly recommend. Really close to facilities, comfortable, spacious rooms. Great price for this room, we have stayed in Innisfail many times in the past in motels dearer with less such as hair dryer, iron and ironing board.. etc. this will be our go to when staying in Innisfail.

Interesting place. Just wanted overnight bed. Suited us perfectly. Could do with a gardener. Great location for travellers.
Catpilots D — Google review
No stars for this place! For the price we paid for 1 night it's was absolutely disgusting! Mould on the walls, AC dusty, towels dirty and couldn't sleep due to the bedsheets feeling dirty. After checkout I was accused of smoking in the room which clearly would set smoke alarms off if I did.
Who G — Google review
Nice clean, quiet comfortable rooms. Better off booking direct with Jim the proprietor, cheaper than going through Trivago etc. Friendly bloke. Let me keep my dog tied to the post outside my room. He even asked if I needed milk for my coffee in the morning. Will stay there again. Close enough to walk to most businesses in Innisfail.

Served it's purpose of hot shower and clean bed was on the main road so it was a little noisy There was no toaster but had kettle and microwave

Old fashioned rooms but great location My adult daughter and her BF were accused of smoking in the rooms which was not the case. Instead of speaking to the parents the manager was very rude and making accusations and called my 21 daughter and son-in-law liars and said he saw them on the cameras and he was watching our rooms. We thought that was very inappropriate knowing we were being monitored. Apart from that we were given discount. We had a small dog which we disclosed to the manager and ensured he was going to be locked in the vehicle and the manager also commented to my daughter that if he knew before hand he wouldn't have let us stay. He was nothing more than a Bully to my daughter and BF and instead of talking to them should of spoken to us the parents of his concerns.
Wendy B — Google review
Friendly, extremely helpful owners and staff. Went out of their way to accommodate us. Will definitely stay here again. Had everything we could ever want in a motel. Car park right outside door, clean rooms, door on the shower (none of those half door things that we have been seeing all over North Queensland that spill water out all over the bathroom floor). Everything we need to cook our own food, and close to shops if need to buy. Great size room too, with good size kitchen bins, sink and with very efficient air con. Country relaxed style. Awesome value for money. Simple old style motel like they used to be, with great customer service.

Stayed 2nd November 2021 Staff pleasant and accommodating to our needs when we broke down in our work truck. Room was fresh and clean plenty of room and had everything we needed. Shower nice and big over all very happy with our stay. McDonald's right across the road for breakfast lunch or dinner. Pubs close by for eating out with shops close by. We would highly recommend Moondarra Motel for a business over night stay, or even family staff were certainly helpful. Robyn & Jamie

I was here three times to have dinner and participate in a round of Thursday's trivia. The food is thai and some of the dishes I had were really delicious (hint:pad thai). But the reasons why I love the place is that the service is great! Staff is very, very friendly and remembered me after my first visit. They have a good sense of knowledge and are proud to be working there. Which brings me to my main reason: Innisfail RSL really is a community center where people can come together. Eventho I was only there on thrusdays, it amazed me how many people participate in the weekly trivia. I really recommend stopping here, have a drink or dinner, especially on a Thursday !

Have been to Indian restaurants all over the world and this is easily in the top 5. The food quality was amazing. The taste superb! What a fantastic gem of a restaurant.

We stopped by here late at night for a quick bite and found it pretty good. The food we had was very tasty (not the best naan we've had, but the butter chicken was great), but we found the portions to be on the small side. The guy at the register also had trouble understanding our questions about the menu and was pretty impatient with us, so if we had a better idea of what to order, I think we may have done better.

Masala Bites in Innisfail truly exceeded our expectations with its fantastic food and exceptional service! We enjoyed a feast of Chicken Dum Biryani, Chicken Fried Rice, Chicken Tandoori, Black Pepper Tandoori Chicken, and rounded off the meal with a soothing cup of Masala Chai. Every dish was rich in flavor, perfectly spiced, and served piping hot. To make the experience even sweeter, we also bought some Indian sweets to take home, and they were absolutely delightful! The desserts were fresh, authentic, and the perfect way to end our meal. A special thanks to Vyshali, our waitress, who went above and beyond to ensure we had an amazing dining experience. She was friendly, attentive, and her recommendations made our meal even more enjoyable. With delicious food, and outstanding service, Masala Bites is a must-visit in Innisfail. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!

GF said it's the best Indian she's ever tasted. Looking from the outside I expected a father cooking out the back talking to his wife and son in Indian and I'm pretty sure that's what went down. Very authentic Indian cuisine at a fair price. Friendly staff made everything perfect.

For what it is you will find it very satisfactory! It’s not high class fine dining but the food is amazing and the service friendly. My visiting friends only eat chicken breast and I called in advance and the chef happily organised it for us! We love visiting - make sure at sunset you don’t get a table with sun in your eyes but otherwise it’s very comfortable

Masala Bite is hands-down one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve ever been to. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home. The food is bursting with authentic flavors, perfectly balanced spices, and the kind of freshness you can taste in every bite. What truly sets Masala Bite apart is the chef. Not only is he incredibly talented, but he’s also one of the friendliest and most genuine people you’ll ever meet. You can tell he puts his heart into every dish, and he even comes out to check on guests, making sure everyone is happy. His passion for cooking shines through in everything—from the perfectly tender butter chicken to the rich, aromatic curries and freshly baked naan. If you’re looking for amazing Indian food made with love, Masala Bite is the place to go. I can’t recommend it enough!

Manager was rude. This was also evident in her messages to us via staff. Tables were not cleaned in a timely manner. Did not received what was ordered. Training in FSANZ, especially in the new food allergen standards is recommended for all staff to complete.

Had Jagad's do my catering for my hen's night and they went above and beyond. The food was hot and amazing and so filling. Highly recommend for your catering needs!!
