Al Hamra is known for its remarkably well-preserved old quarter, with traditional mud-brick houses and narrow lanes that offer a glimpse into central Omani life a century ago. Al Hoota Cave, a 2-million-year-old cave in Oman, is a true gem with its four lakes and rare species like blind fish. The cave is adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites and is the only one in Oman developed for tourism. Visitors can explore the cave's running water and staircases leading to key features. Additionally, there's a geological museum at the visitors center showcasing magnificent mineral specimens that have made Oman renowned among geologists.
It is a wonderful place to see the caves and experience the cave environment. There are over a million year old rocks in the caves with patterns and depositions developing over many, many years. These are very well maintained and give a unique view of the caves to visitors. A geological exhibition on the first floor of the entrance building showcases the various rocks and animal life in the cave. I have seen caves in other parts of the world, but this was very unique.
Rajat S — Google review
We visited Al Hoota Cave on a holiday, and it turned out to be one of the most enchanting experiences in Oman. As always, being with my dear friends made the trip even more special. The moment you step inside the cave, you feel transported into a different world — for a while, you will be in and out, wondering which part of the globe you are actually in. Once you reach the main gate, you take your tickets and wait for the small train that carries visitors to the cave entrance. That short train trip itself is a fine piece of mesmerising experience — the views and the anticipation build up the excitement before you even step inside. The guided tour takes you through millions of years of natural history, with spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, and an underground lake that is home to rare blind fish. The atmosphere inside is cool, calm, and almost magical, making it a refreshing escape from the outside heat. Outside, the museum and displays add, more insight into the geology and history of the cave. Everything is well-maintained, organized, and makes the visit smooth and informative. If you’re in or around Nizwa, this is definitely a must-visit attraction. Whether with family, colleagues, or friends, Al Hoota Cave is one of those places that leaves you amazed and makes you appreciate the hidden natural wonders of Oman.
Ravindran C — Google review
Great place to visit if you are in the area! There is a comprehensive museum in the main building. The cave itself is around 2 minutes away from a golf cart, which is included in the price. You can walk inside the cave by yourself or with a guide, we decided to go by ourselves. Complete walk last around 30 minutes and it’s very interesting to see how nature and time are capable of building amazing things like this cave! I took one star because the cost is a bit too much in my opinion.
John B — Google review
What an experience, well worth a detour. Wonderful nature creation. The tour through the cave was lovely, well built staircase and interesting information boards on the way. In addition to that there is an information centre and climbing wall which is charged in addition to the ticket. The only thing that could be improved is the coffee machine as the cafe did not serve latte or cappuccino 🤭
Ags — Google review
Amazing experience and absolutely breathtaking inside. We weren't prepared for the humidity inside, it was so humid we were dripping with sweat. The walk isn't fit for anyone who struggles with stairs as there are alot of them. Its also slippery so you need to wear sensible footwear. Took about an hour to walk through but well worth the time to visit. The feeling of cold air as you exit the cave was so nice!
Ben U — Google review
The place is an amazing natural wonder. But the place needs more attractions (not just the cave), like a better museum, science activities for students, VR, audio guide. Also the lights in the cave needs more creativity.
Abdullah S — Google review
Booked tickets through the online portal but never received the confirmation email. Staff at the entrance took the trouble to verify our card payment and with just a short delay we were allowed in. The troublesome train from the visitor center to the cave has now been removed altogether and replaced with a golfcart shuttle service... which worked fine. Cave itself is impressive in scale, but somewhat underwhelming in stalactite formations compared to some other caves in the region. The lighting and path are excellent however, making for a pleasant stroll through the cave.
Nan U — Google review
You walk through in like 30 minutes, its a nice cave but nothing compared to the top ones in other countries. Pretty decent but at 7 OMR per person honestly way overpriced.

Bait Al Safah is a living history museum located in the charming town of Al Hamra, Oman. The museum offers an authentic experience where locals demonstrate traditional Omani traditions in a restored mud-brick house. Visitors can witness juniper-oil production, bread-making, and coffee-bean grinding while interacting with the friendly hosts. The village of Al Hamra itself is a hidden gem known for its timeless beauty, rich cultural heritage, and stunning landscapes including ancient ruins and picturesque palm groves.
This was the residence of a “Sheikh” or Lord in the town of Al Hamra. The OR3 per head ticket included a free but brief guided tour by an english speaking guide. The building has been restored beautifully. You will get to taste omani bread and cardamom tea made on site. Many ruins in the same vicinity.
Razif R — Google review
A great experience! The house shows how people in Oman lived in the past. The staff are very friendly and show how to make traditional coffee and bread. Everything feels real and authentic. Very interesting and highly recommended!
Luca — Google review
A remarkable experience of walking back in time to when the Omani people used to live in the village. The house (used to belong to a Sheik) is well-preserved and maintains its charm and originality. Our guide Ridzuan, is a patient storyteller and he walked us through the museum checking into every room and floor of the house. We tasted date syrup and he served us Kalwa coffee and ginger tea. Overall a one of its kind experience and would recommend a visit for any visitor in Oman.
Jason T — Google review
This place is a real hidden gem in Oman. As soon as we entered the village, the mud brick houses slow living, and date palm orchards transported us to another world. Bait Al Safah, a living museum is unlike any other. The museum is set in one of the mud brick houses, and along with the exhibits, they keep essential oils, frankincense, ouds, and other local products. As we walked through the halls and rooms, the guide didn’t just explain the museum, he shared their culture and asked about ours. Omani tea and locally grown dates were always available for visitors. They also showcase traditional craftsmanship, like pressing oil, making flatbread, and roasting and grinding coffee. It’s not just a display, you can actually enjoy the products made right there. This experience will always stay with me. The hospitality of the locals was the cherry on top. Don't miss this place if you're nearby... The only thing I recommend to reserve in advance is dining with a local family. For the rest of the experience you don't need to wait
Mariam A — Google review
Excellent place to visit in town. You can experience how the typical Omani home looks like and hear some stories about the culture. Also you can tase a fresh Omani cafe and see how it is made.

We loved the guided tour at Bait Al Safah! It was rich in culture and history, with authentic demonstrations of traditional Omani life inside a beautifully preserved heritage house. The experience is immersive from start to finish—you learn, participate, and truly feel transported in time. Absolutely worth it. Don’t skip it—it’s incredible!
Jéssica F — Google review
We really enjoyed our visit to Bait Al Safah Museum! The guides were super friendly and knew so much about Omani culture. It’s a very interactive place and great for all ages. We loved tasting the date syrup, trying on the traditional clothes, and seeing how to bake the typical bread – such a fun and authentic experience. Definitely worth a visit!

Old Al Hamra village, nestled in the Ad Dakhiliyah region of Oman, is a charming and authentic destination that offers a glimpse into the country's rich cultural heritage. The 400-year-old town boasts timeless beauty and picturesque landscapes, including ancient ruins, palm groves, and towering cliffs. Visitors can explore old buildings that have been renovated into hotels, restaurants, pubs, and coffee places while reflecting local tradition and history.
Beautiful old town with crumbling ruins and a well maintained museum in an old house. Well worth a visit. Park your car outside the village however as the streets are very narrow.
Larkin C — Google review
Very special place to wander through. Remember to visit the palm tree area next to it.
Sebastian E — Google review
Nice area to walk around and see the old houses. Couldn't find out too much information about the homes. And some are in disrepair and dangerous to enter. Some homes are full of trash unfortunately. But it's beautiful to see how they were built and how they were used with areas they put candles and fires etc.
Shifttradition — Google review
our hotel is at the abandoned village ( Al Hamra) but we really enjoyed the atmosphere and the quietness. We walked and wonder how it was 500 years ago! There is a nice cafe in the middle of dates plantation and a living museum to see the old building. not to be missed
Lynn C — Google review
Beautiful structures to look at but is not maintained or kept clean. Not very easy to find on your own so I suggest a tour group.
Jaeme H — Google review
Ancient village .. Good to come visit but needs serious maintenance... Nothing else but a dilapidated ruin
Sagar B — Google review
Scenic and attractive village in the mountains. Lots of rustic charm. Some old buildings have been beautifully renovated to become hotels, restaurants, pubs and coffee places at the same time reflecting local tradition, history and culture. Nice walk around the village, needs a bit of climbing, not advisable for those with mobility problems.
CK C — Google review
At 7.30 in the the morning I was there completely alone. I didn't like all the garbage. It could be maintained much better. If navigation tells you you can drive through, don't belive it.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful and fascinating private museum: an association has restored this traditional house and furnished it to showcase Omani life in the past. A must-see. Two women also demonstrate how to roast coffee, grind grain, and bake bread (delicious). A guide is included in the modest ticket price. Traditional houses, unfortunately, are disappearing because no one restores them. They would be beautiful. They are losing their cultural heritage as a dwelling. Sarebbero bellissime. Stanno perdendo il loro pratimonio culturale abitativo.

Mountains
Jebel Shams, the highest mountain peak in Oman, offers breathtaking views of the deep Wadi Ghul also known as the Grand Canyon of Arabia. The valley is characterized by vertical cliffs that expose more than 1000m dropoffs. The access point to this popular mountain can be achieved either by foot or 4WD. A double-arched gateway marks the entrance to the town that serves as a natural access point for historic sites such as Bahla and Jabrin.
Highest mountain in Oman. Stunning view of mountains, labelled as the Grand Canyon of Arabia. Temperature drops at 17 at the time we went ( Dec 2, 2024). Its a perfect location for all who loves adventure. It is best to go with a 4WD. The terrain is a little bit challenging. A perfect spot for camping and hiking.

Jabel Shams or the Sun Mountain is the highest mountain in GCC.You don't need 4x4 to go there, you may use simple car. The temperature is very cold especially at night. During winter there is a chance of snow. Many people are visiting Jabel Shams to camp. There are so many camping sites in Jabel shams.

Highest mountain in Oman. Stunning view of mountains, labelled as the Grand Canyon of Arabia. Temperature drops at 11 at the time we went ( Feb 7th 2025) We went our entire team from Bahrain and visiting such place is first time. We left from Muscat around 3.30am and reached morning 7am. Temperature was awesome.. It’s a perfect location for all who loves adventure. It is best to go with a 4WD. The terrain is a little bit challenging. A perfect spot for camping and hiking.

We did the balcony walk W6 and spent about 6 hours return (with photo stops, lunch stop and we spent quite a bit of time at the oasis) you will need good shoes as there are lots of scrambling rocks. Lots of goats along the way! When you reach a place that seems like the end, look for the flag, it should direct you to go up the rocks a little bit to find the oasis. Lots of people turn back at just the last point. We also saw some deserted buildings there. We came in January and lots of people came early in the morning too, it’s quite cold in the morning and with the sun it’s ok. But when we came out at noon it’s still quite cloudy so it was quite cold. We came here with a normal car but a 4WD would be handy.

pretty scenic view, a chilly atmosphere, the climb on the mountain is pretty good, there are a plenty of resorts above to relax, will need to go through a police checkpoint just to make sure that you go with a 4WD vehicle, beautiful around the time of Monsoon it's really worth doing. We traveled 2 hours round trip and we had a blast. Not to be too dizzy but we still manage to pass each other easily. It's called the Grand Canyon of Oman and while a bit smaller

I recently dined at Qura Restaurant in Al Hamra, and it was outstanding. The food is delicious and varied, with unique flavors and expert preparation. The service is excellent; the staff are friendly and attentive. The restaurant's cleanliness enhances the experience, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting with elegant decor. Conveniently located on the road to major tourist attractions like Jebel Shams, it's an ideal stop during your journey. --- **Restaurant Review: 5/5 Stars** From the moment I stepped into the restaurant, I was greeted with exceptional hospitality, setting the tone for a memorable dining experience. The variety of meals on offer was truly impressive, catering to a wide range of tastes and dietary preferences. Each dish I tried was a delight to the senses, perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. The service here deserves special mention. The staff were attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, ensuring that our every need was met with a smile. They were quick to offer recommendations, and their passion for the cuisine was evident in their detailed descriptions of each dish. The drinks menu was equally commendable. Whether you prefer a classic cocktail ( non-alcoholic options) , there's something for everyone. Each beverage was crafted to perfection, complementing the meals wonderfully. Cleanliness and hygiene were clearly a top priority, with immaculate dining and kitchen areas. This attention to detail extended to the well-designed and comfortable dining space, which enhanced the overall ambiance. The location of the restaurant is another highlight. It’s easily accessible and situated in a lovely area, making it the perfect spot for both casual meals and special occasions. In conclusion, this restaurant offers an outstanding dining experience with its delicious food, excellent service, variety of drinks, top-notch cleanliness, and great location. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic meal and will definitely be returning soon. 5/5 stars without a doubt!

I also had a grill plate, didn't convince me, but 3000 rials are not appropriate for that. The not very tasty tea also cost 300. 200 m further on the left there is the "Reem al Yamen", everything is right here.. Even the 2nd free tea came without being asked.
