Beautiful church with golden interior. Ouro Preto has a lot of churches but this one is without a doubt the most impressive. You do have to pay to enter but it is definitely worth it.

Amazing historic church with gold. You need to buy ticket to enter not at entrance, at house around 10meter from here. Fee is 10BRL per adult, 5BRL per kids. It is much more worth than fee. If you visit Ouro Preto, you must plan to visit here. By the way, there are hills around there if you go from Tiradentes plaza. It’s better to think time and energy.
Papipupenta — Google review
So much for back breaking sweat and forced labour to produce this masterpiece gold plated art work. And yet the slaves were not allowed to worship here for centuries
Al-Amin M — Google review
A beautiful basilic and full of history and cultural significance. A jewel in the Brazilian Crown that was built on the back of the gold riches and the enslaved African people. But, like anywhere in the world, it's part of its history and should be celebrated taking all into account. History cannot be erased or ignored, it must be studied and absorbed us.

Museu da Inconfidência is a long-standing museum housed in the former municipal headquarters and old jail of Ouro Preto, dating back to 1784-1854. It pays tribute to the victims of the failed Inconfidencia Mineira movement, which sought independence from Portugal in 1789. The museum features exhibits such as Tiradentes' tomb and manuscripts related to the revolt.

Historical place
The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi is an 18th-century Roman Catholic church renowned for its exquisite design and lavishly painted interior. Constructed in 1768 by the celebrated Baroque artist Aleijadinho, it stands as one of Ouro Preto's most iconic architectural landmarks.
Very beautiful place. It's a bit out of the way but I highly recommend visiting if you're in the area. We made the 3 hour drive from Viçosa and only stayed for the day, but the six hours on the road were worth seeing such a magnificent and historic town. The church has a stunning mural on the ceiling. I hope to make it back to visit again one day.
Wayne E — Google review
The Igreja de São Francisco de Assis in Ouro Preto, Brazil, is a Baroque Catholic church with Rococo elements, celebrated as a masterpiece of Aleijadinho, who designed its facade and interior features. It also houses iconic paintings by Mestre Ataíde, such as the famous ceiling of the nave. The church was recognized as a historic site by IPHAN and included among the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in 2009. Constructed by the Ordem Terceira de São Francisco de Assis, its building began in 1765 and progressed under Aleijadinho’s direction, with significant contributions from other artists. Key stages of construction included the chapel-mor (1774), the altar-mor (1790–1794), and later additions like lateral altars (1829–1890). Structural issues necessitated additional work, including side arcades in 1801. The church underwent various restorations, including 20th-century efforts led by IPHAN, ensuring its preservation as part of Ouro Preto's UNESCO World Heritage status.

Beautiful church, it’s one of the most visited in the area, so keep that in mind
Christian P — Google review
A gem of Baroque architecture nestled atop a sloping square, this church is a visual delight—especially for photography enthusiasts. Your lens can’t help but capture the ornate façade, sculpted by Aleijadinho, bathed in sunlight and shadow. What makes the visit even more memorable is the vibrant soapstone handicraft market right in front of the church. Stalls overflowing with local artisanal sculptures offer an authentic touch and a chance to take home a piece of tradition. A perfect pairing of art, history, and local craftsmanship — a must-visit in Ouro Preto.
Sidney B — Google review
Nice to visit, but not the greatest church on earth. Like every other church in Ouro Preto, you have to go pay an entrance fee, either cash or via PIX.
Karl — Google review
Church with a incredible amount of art work. You can spend hours looking at the ceiling, it’s mesmerizing. The altar is also full very fine craftsmanship. On the back you also have a tiny museum of Aleijadinho’s art work during his life
Felipe S — Google review
It is a beautiful church! It was ornated by Aleijadinho! It is very beautiful and intetesting! It really worths a visit! The visit costs 10 reais. There are another church in town to visit for free. Both were ornate by him! This one is more beautiful! Visit both!

Morro São Sebastião Lookout, located in Ouro Preto, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Tiradentes square and the historical neighborhood of Antonio Dias. The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon. Accessible by a steep street near the Astronomical Observatory, it's recommended to wear comfortable shoes for the climb. While some suggest hiring a local driver or taking a guided tour due to the challenging terrain, others find the view well worth the effort and recommend driving there directly.
Very good view, I think it’s the best place to ove re look the whole town, just you need to climb up the steep slope, and it’s not friendly for people who have leg or knees problem. So if you ‘re healthy and do like exercise, it’s a pretty good experience for cardio 🤓 Do wear comfortable shoes are important 😺

Worthwhile to look around and learn about money and gold. One of their employees showed us around. She was so enthusiastic and showed us every room!
Adam B — Google review
This is the largest and grandest building in town. It's history as a residence and mint is documented.. there are exhibits on coinage and the town's history. There are also spaces to show how the rooms may have looked in original use. The most poignant are the exhibition s in the basement which contain slave paraphernalia.
Mark W — Google review
The architecture is great. It is a museum like no other but I think it should have more digital features to make it more interesting.

Very interesting building (archtectcure and engineering wise), a broad collection of many different "currencies" used through out the years (due to a chronical inflation process that ended in the middle of the 1990's with the inauguration of then Real as Brazilian currency and inflation control)

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos is one of the many churches in Ouro Preto, each with its own unique history and architectural style. It is said to have been commissioned by Chico Rei, a former slave who became a wealthy mine owner and freed many others.

Bené da Flauta Restaurante e Café is a charming eatery located in an 18th-century colonial mansion in the upscale area of the city, next to the Church of São Francisco de Assis. The restaurant pays homage to a former resident who used to play the flute on the city streets. Guests can enjoy their meals accompanied by classic jazz or MPB tunes while taking in the soothing view.
Its a general problem in Brazil unfortunately, I face it here as well. Neither the waiters speak English nor the menu is in English. It's really hard for the tourists to order. The food is delicious, the environment is nice and clean. I like it so much.
Tugba A — Google review
I visited this restaurant in January 2025 with my family for dinner. I have to start by mentioning the amazing service; the staff was extremely attentive and friendly. Despite our table placing a large order for six people, the food came out quickly. The food was delicious! Everything we ordered tasted great, especially the mandioca (yuca). The building where the restaurant is located has remained unchanged for many years, and the servers were kind enough to share its history with us.
Isabel M — Google review

Beautiful restaurant. Average food quality and quite bad service. Prices are not justified for the quality. Quite empty for dinner. They serve typical Minas Gerais food ONLY FOR LUNCH! Don’t recommend it!
Cristiana F — Google review
Do not try this terrible restaurant. I made booking with the girl yesterday for dinner on Sunday evening. She took it without telling us that it was not ooen on Sunday. We waited in the cold air for an hour only to find out it was close on Sunday!

They are famous and popular restaurant at Ouro Preto. So, don’t forget to make reservation. Otherwise, you need to wait with long line. Their atmosphere, staff services, and of course food was very good. Their dishes were individual, just the right amounts. Their price was also attractive range, but amazing quality.

Gustavo B — Google review
I highly recommend making a reservation (on the restaurants site), to avoid any waiting lines. The food was incredible, but a bit pricey. The staff was kind and did their work well. The place its self is also amazing and the views are spectacular, BUT (as going to any other place in the city) it does require walking as it has very little parking spaces near. TIP: This restaurant is better during the afternoon (has more plate options, and the views are better) Overall, it was a great experience.

The service at Garapinha is excellent; the waiter who served me was super helpful. He said they offer a mini version of the traditional PF (Portuguese for "PF"). Since I don't eat much, I ordered this version, which cost only R$25.00. The flavor of this homemade food is surreal! Remember that on the ground floor you can buy souvenirs from your trip; in my case, I bought cheese and dulce de leche, which were also very reasonably priced. I RECOMMEND IT! There were few meat options; there was only sausage, and then they added some chicken. It wasn't tasty; it was pretty average. I didn't think it was worth it. And the space is pretty cramped. Oh, and they don't serve fresh juices. Since we don't drink soda, we had to order water. (Original) Comida a vontade por um preço fixo (R$43,00, hoje 24/07/2025). Porem a comida é meio sem graça. Restaurante e Scotch Bar Acaso 85 is a stunning multi-storey restaurant with high ceilings and a beautiful stone wall interior. Located in Lg.do Rosario, it offers a sophisticated dining experience with an exquisite menu. The self-service buffet style allows you to pay by weight, making it a great option for trying local cuisine. The charming courtyard and elaborate decoration add to the overall ambiance of this outstanding restaurant, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike.
This restaurant was surprisingly large. After you enter the main door you head down and down into the basement. The place is well decorated and has many interesting places to explore. The lunch buffet was delicious. Strangely this scotch bar had no scotch, at least when we went.

A MUST in the town !! Delicious , cheap , great environment!! Grateful to found it !!

Self service type of place - you pay for the weight. The food was very tasty and not in fair price range - it is a good option for one who doesn't know the local cuisine and wants to try a bit of everything. Place is not very touristic, rather for locals and students. The lady from the kitchen also explained me, what each dish is and how usually people eat it (combine things etc.), tho we spoke in Portuguese (I don't know their English proficiency). Strongly recommend!

West side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the west side side of town. Start the day off with Restaurante Contos de Réis, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Casa Aleijadinho. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Minas Gerais restaurant
Restaurant
Restaurante Contos de Réis is a charming dining spot located in a historic building, offering traditional dishes and homemade desserts. Situated in the rustic charm of Ouro Preto, this restaurant provides a captivating culinary experience that delves into Brazil's rich heritage. The menu features skillfully prepared local specialties such as Local Sausage with Jilo and Braised Beef Ribs served with savory farofa and fried polenta, showcasing the essence of Minas Gerais cuisine.
The history of this place is still palpable as we dine in what was once a slave quarter many years ago. If you pay attention to the low ceiling, the barred windows, the materials used in the building, and the decor featuring ancient and historical artifacts, you'll realize that this establishment offers a unique experience and tells a profound story. The food complements this narrative, as much of the traditional cuisine reflects what the enslaved people could eat and how they prepared their meals to enhance the flavors. Although the history is somber, I found it touching when our server said, "The story may be sad, but we aim to bring something good out of it and ensure everyone remembers so we don't return to dark times." This restaurant is the best for authentic food from Minas. The dishes they prepare are incredibly tasty, and the portions are generous, making it easy to share or take leftovers home. I highly recommend ordering the traditional, authentic dishes!

A great local experience with an authentic charm, fantastic view, wonderful food and great service. I tried the "rabada" and it was fantastic, good portion and nice presentation coupled with a nice local choppe of beer. Cozinha Mineira as it's best.
Guillermo H — Google review
The restaurant has a charming interior with beautiful artisanal decorations, creating a cozy atmosphere. However, the food left much to be desired. The ribs were overly dry and heavily salted, which made the meal less enjoyable.
Nikolay T — Google review
I hate to be that unpopular guy, but I have to be honest, I didn't enjoy my dinner here. The average price is quite pricey, but I suppose the ingredients are probably sourced from miles away. So the costs added up, which I could look past that. I had the empanadinhos with stuffed cheese for the starter and it was incredibly salty. I'm aware that cheese can be salty, but this was just another level. Then I had bacalhau for the main. Despite the price point being among the top dishes, I had my hope so high that it would redeem my experience. Unfortunately, No. This was also incredibly salty, which I assumed it was due to the amount of olives they threw in this tiny dish. Put it this way, the portion of olives was half of the dish, whilst the other half was bacalhau & potatoes! I have no issues with olives, in fact I like them! But for this dish it was a fail. Let's hope that I was just unlucky. Let's assume that maybe these 2 dishes were never popular.

Great food n nice restaurant The portion was big, I can’t finish the whole , may consider to share for 2 pax with desert n drinks

Great food accompanied by friendly service. Our frango com quiabo (chicken with okra) was delicious. For dessert, we followed the server’s recommendation and tried the cheese ice-cream served with warm goiaba (guava) syrup. It was the perfect finale of our meal. The restaurant is situated in a former senzala, a historical slave quarter from colonial Brazil. The added layer of significance gave the experience an extra depth.

I am visiting Ouro Preto after 22 years. Was brought to this restaurant by some friends. We had arroz, angu and frango ensopado com ora pronobis, the flavour was awesome. Exploring the Centro Histórico of Ouro Preto is akin to stepping back in time to the late 1700s and early 1800s, a period rich in Portuguese colonial history. This charming old town features cobblestone streets, stunning baroque churches, and beautifully preserved mansions that reflect its cultural heritage. A walking tour here can be moderately challenging due to elevation changes and uneven paths but offers an immersive experience near key attractions, including seven magnificent churches.
I visited here many years ago. It is a really nice town not far from Belo Horizonte. Many nice places to see - the churches, restaurants, school of mines, and other historical sites. I really enjoyed the visit.

Aleijadinho’s house tour was great! Got to see a pretty well preserved heritage house, the tour was in Portuguese (my friend translated for me an english speaker).
