Plaza de Armas of Chachapoyas is a beautiful and bustling square located in the heart of the Peruvian mountains. The area offers a tranquil and clean atmosphere, with friendly locals and a variety of restaurants to enjoy. Visitors can explore the nearby market for regional produce and fruits before embarking on treks and tours. The plaza itself boasts stunning architecture and is currently undergoing renovation works.
Long drive to get there, but worth it. The town has narrow roads, so driving a car needs care, but roads are mostly one way in the centre. Road condition is poor, getting to the town in places, and terrible driving to Kuelap, which is disappointing, as everything else is modernised. The good thing is there are no moto taxis

Peruvian restaurant
Bar
El Batán Del Tayta is a trendy eatery in Chachapoyas that has sparked mixed reactions among visitors. Chef David Sancon's innovative approach to Amazonian cuisine has impressed some with imaginative presentations and a hip jungle decor, while others find it lacking substance. The restaurant offers a blend of inventive style and exotic flavors typical of the rainforest foothills, creating an enticing sensory experience for diners.
An exceptional place! Creative dishes with decoration sometimes going over the top. But each meal is a little work of art. Ootstanding value!
Marek W — Google review
This restaurant transforms traditional amazonian dishes in a modern and photogenic way. The presentation of every dish and every drink is very special, sometimes a bit over the top. The food tastes very good (at least most of the dishes we had dis). The service is friendly and attentive. Obviously the pricing is on the higher end of what you usually find here. But overall, in my opinion, this restaurant offers a great experience with good food and creative drinks. Therefore the 5 star rating feels justified. Definitely visit this restaurant if you have the chance and judge for yourself. ;-)
Dmitry S — Google review
El Batán is hands down one of the best culinary experiences we had in Peru. The menu is a beautiful mix of traditional Amazonian and Andean flavors, reimagined with creativity and finesse. We tried the tasting menu and every dish was a surprise — full of color, texture, and unique local ingredients. The presentation is worthy of a fine dining restaurant, but the atmosphere remains warm and authentic. The service was excellent too: friendly, attentive, and happy to explain each dish. If you want to taste the real spirit of Chachapoyas with a modern twist, don’t miss El Batán del Tayta. It’s more than just food — it’s a full cultural and gastronomic experience.
Anis M — Google review
Extraordinary experience in Chachapoyas!! We tried the jungle-edge trout ceviche, trout stew, and the piqueo campesino (the restaurant’s signature dish). Incredible flavors and beautiful presentation. The staff was very friendly and welcoming.
Adrian H — Google review
Amazing place to take photos, and the cocktails were pretty good but unfortunately the food I ordered was quite poor. I had the tayta campesino and all the different cuts of meat were really dry and tough. Considering it was quite expensive (relatively to other places) I have to say I was quite disappointed
Alexander K — Google review
The presentation of the food and the flavor are amazing! But the quantity although is more than some fancy restaurants, I felt it could be a bit better… that’s why I give 4/5 The waitress was very friendly and kind, but I don’t know that because of the time, she was alone, managing the orders and the cashier. Regarding the atmosphere, for me it was too much rustic, not bad but I would prefer a bigger table and a chair that you can move easily. Prices are a bit high but think it worth it as the flavors are good. I ordered Ceviche Ceja de Selva, Milanesa Shacshina, 1 portion of rice, 1/2 pitcher of passion fruit juice and everything was s/94. You can pay with credit/debit card or cash. Definitely a good option for lunch/dinner in Chachapoyas.
Angie S — Google review
Lovely place! We came on a Sunday so it was quite empty. The service was extremely quick and we were eating within minutes. The staging is fun, which my European partner really appreciated. The ceviche ceja de selva was great, with the ripest most buttery avocado. The whole restaurant is decorated and over the top. It is a bit expensive for Chachapoyas, but we can spare a few euros for good food, good service, and good ambiance.

La Real Cecina is a renowned restaurant in Chachapoyas, Peru that offers a culinary experience celebrating the rich heritage of Amazonian cuisine. The restaurant is known for its specialty in preparing the best cecina in various dishes and combinations, along with other typical Amazonian plates. Housed inside a beautiful mansion, the restaurant provides a welcoming and classic atmosphere. The staff is highly praised for their service.
Plant based dishes. I fully recommend to try traditional peruvian "Lomo Saltado" but vegetarian here.

Is good regional food. As good as it gets in Chachapoyas. Is a nice place with a very classy inside patio. I have an issue regarding the payment, they charge me 5% extra because I was paying with a card... But everything was delicious so 🤷🏻‍♂️

MOVIL TOURS offers comfortable and convenient overnight bus services in Peru. The buses are modern, clean, and provide large seating areas with TVs for entertainment while waiting. The staff is friendly and ensures that bags are tagged for correct delivery. Although the cheaper class is satisfactory, upgrading to VIP is worth it. Passengers recommend booking ahead of time due to high demand for tickets. While the buses lack toilet paper, they offer a fantastic and comfortable way to travel around Peru at an affordable price.

Pizza restaurant
Bocazza is renowned for its exceptional pizza, considered by many as the finest in town. Although not all variants have been tasted, a considerable number have been sampled and found to be incredibly delectable. The crust, crafted with care using artisan techniques, adds an extra layer of quality to every bite. Without a doubt, it comes highly recommended. However, one downside is that the service can be slow even during less busy periods.
This pizza is the best one in town, I haven't tried all but I've tried quiet a few. I got the Supreme and my friend got the Sicilian...SO DELISH! The bread was definelty handmade, artisan dough. Just sooo good. Highly recommend. The only thing is that they did Take a while and it wasn't even busy. So if your starving and ready to eat, probably not the best option for you. But imo It was worth the wait.

Pizza was okay, but nothing special and for the quality very pricey. Small basic pizza / 4 slices for 18 soles. Wouldn’t come back…

BAR RESTAURANT CHACHA offers excellent service, with a delectable morning meal and a warm and inviting atmosphere. Overall, BAR RESTAURANT CHACHA creates an enjoyable dining experience with their top-notch offerings and pleasant ambiance.
It will be perfect if the place put some heater it's a wee bit cold
Jaqueline F — Google review
Very average. I had the spicy chicken wings which were far too sweet and not at all spicy.
Aidan — Google review
Great ambience but mediocre food. The sign in front says they accept credit cards but we couldn’t pay with a credit card for some reason, ordered an American breakfast, expecting an American breakfast and instead got two scoops of scrambled eggs heavily salted and two pieces of ham , with a surprisingly good glass of pineapple juice with a couple dinner rolls (no jam or peanut butter or other normal condiments just margarine ) and watery coffee. I’d recommend trying one of the higher rated cafes in the area instead
Andrew P — Google review
Coffee was ok, hot chocolate below average. We ordered the "triple Sandwiches" which was one and a half slices of extremely dry bread. Staff were nice but I would not recommend this place.
Leigh-Anne W — Google review
Very expensive and disappointing food. The sandwich for breakfast turned out to be only half the usual club sandwich with dry untoasted bread, barely filled, with no sauce or butter for S/12. Coffee is just ok. Staff just ok. For the price I expect better and would not recommend the place.
Bengiamin B — Google review
I had an omelette which was quite greasy. This infusions are not herbs, its in the form of tea bags. They open early at 7, which was a plus for me.

We had breakfast here and it was great! Fairly standard breakfast options, but done very well. Really attentive and welcoming staff - although as we only speak English a few things may have been lost on translation, but they were very accommodating of us. An interesting and fun little quirk is that you get an owl placemat to colour in - awesome idea! Would highly recommend and we'll be back if we get a chance
Daniel J — Google review
Best burger in town. Super nice service. I really enjoyed being there. While waiting for your food you have the chance to draw an awesome owl ;) If you're in Chachapoyas you have to go there!
K W — Google review
On looks and presentation this place gets 5+ stars. The place is very nicely decorated and setup, the servers are professional and attentive (and spoke english, although we speak Spanish anyway), and the food really has the gastropub look. Also, the restaurant was packed at dinner time with well-dressed Peruvians as well as tourists. For dinner, I had the Burger Especial (17 soles) while my girlfriend had the Spaghetti Bolognese (18). The burger was tasty, but the bun was a bit stale and flaky, while the meat was too compressed and lacked enough fat content for a proper burger. These are forgivable mistakes though as the quality of available ingredients is not the highest, and the rest of the fixings on the burger were great, especially the bacon. My girlfriend liked her spaghetti, but could have eaten twice the portion. Being a gastopub style place, these things should be expected, so if you're a budget backpacker, then this is not the place for you. Their breakfasts range from 7 soles to 10 soles and they are great for the money, Juice and coffee/tea are served with each and I had eggs with bread, and added bacon, while my girlfriend had an omelette. I would come here again for breakfast or dinner.
Brian D — Google review
Came here for breakfast and was very impressed. The staff were friendly and very professional and the vibe/decor was really cool (lots of owl pictures and figurines). I found the breakfast to be good, but would have liked more options (e.g. fruit & yoghurt or crepes). The included pineapple juice was delicious and I really liked the little biscuit that came with the included coffee. Crayons are on the table to colour-in the owl on the provided placemat (I loved this!) More upbeat music would have been nice.
Megs L — Google review
Unique restaurant with creative decor, they do offer waffles, however at the time of our visit they were unavailable. We tried the americano combo and omelette with ham - both of which were very tasty. The coffee is really strong! WiFi is fast and the bathroom is sparking clean, a great place to relax and eat good food.

The ruins of Kuelap, a fortress built between the 9th and 11th centuries by the Chachapoya culture, are located on a mountain peak and surrounded by an impressive wall up to 20m high. The structure is oval-shaped, with three narrow gates that act as a clever security system to force attackers into single-file lines. This historical landmark was rediscovered in 1843 and made up of millions of cubic feet of remarkably preserved stone.
All I can say is wow. This site is amazing, the walk through the historical buildings is beautiful and the view is breathtaking. It isn't a huge sight and there is a 1.4km hike up hill to the actual site once you get off the cable cars but it's worth it (you could rent a horse if you wanted to). It's quite uneven so if mobility is an issue you might need to take care.
Lisa W — Google review
Important note to everyone planning to visit Kuelap: it is only possible to buy the entry ticket to the archeological site online (with national or international credit card). Currently, as of August 2025, the regular ticket price is 30 Soles. The ticket to the teleferico can still be purchased on the spot (cash or national credit card only). The price was 25,50 Soles.
Dmitry S — Google review
I was a bijr skeptical about heading there, but if you are already doing gocta, then why not. Archeological site is ome thing, I was more impressed by the views on this place. So good that I kept looking at them. Plus the cable car heading up is also amazing. Important thing to notice that they don't sell the tickets for the fortress itself anywhere. You have to buy it online I'm going to add the QR code to do so which also has the website. If you go to the cable car entrance, they will also tell you to book it online. And the idea to book that is that choose an entrance which will be at least 1 hour or 1.5 hours later to when you are at the cable car insurance because it will take 20 minutes to get up then almost 30 minutes of walking to that place and then you will have you will get the limit end entry so choose your entry time one or 1.5 hours later.
Darpan J — Google review
Kuélap is absolutely amazing! The place is full of energy and history, surrounded by stunning vegetation and mountain views. The whole tour inside takes about 2 hours, with lots of ruins and impressive walls to explore. Entrance is S/ 20 (online only). To get there you have three options: • Hiking (very hard), • By car (Nogalcucho or Choctamal), • Or the cable car, which we chose and highly recommend! It costs around S/ 27 per person, takes about 25 minutes, and offers breathtaking views. Important note: Kuélap is not only a fortress, but a whole fortified city built by the Chachapoyas culture around 900–1100 AD. The cable car itself was built with French technology and is super modern and safe. Definitely one of the most impressive experiences in northern Peru!
Adrian H — Google review
A magnificent site, with all the round houses in the typical Chachapoyas style. However, do note that there was a landslide early in 2023 and some parts are still under repair (and the walk is a little muddy, since it is not intended to be the main one.). Fantastic scenery though.
Chin H — Google review
Kuelap fortress - again, out of the way and so incredibly old and historical. Our guide Kristian really knew his stuff - we saw to most amazing pre-Incan structures. The gondola we had to ride to visit the fortress gave us panoramic views that were to die for! Good loop walk. Please note that you do need your passport with your ticket.

It was so amazing 👏 built 1000 years, BC!!! Unbelievable, so beautiful up here, orchids and bromeliad grow upon trees and a wealth of birds 🐦 including hummingbirds, grace the citadel. The 4km cable car 🚡 was just awesome. It's all so interesting. If you can't make the final climb, you can hire a horse. Take a guide for a full experience ✨️

El Tejado is an excellent Peruvian eatery located slightly away from the main city area. It exclusively serves lunch, providing patrons with a refined dining experience (considering Chachapoyas' standards) at a remarkably inexpensive price of 8 soles. In terms of quality and value, it's hard to find a better deal in this town. The menu is available at 12.30 pm, and their chili dishes are particularly noteworthy.
El Menu gives you an upscale dining experience (by Chachapoyas standards) at an affordable 8 soles. Hard to beat that price for quality ratio in this town.
Robert N — Google review
We came for the menu, but ended up having the Tacu Tacu and left with an indifferent opinion. We went on the weekend, when the menu is not available (our fault), and found the place much fancier than we imagined. Our server may have been having a bad day or something because she was not friendly by any definition of the word. We ordered the Lomo Saltado Tacu Tacu (25 soles) and the Cecina Tacu Tacu (20 soles). Tacu Tacu is a sauced and fried rice dish we had not tried yet, and is apparently not for us. The Lomo Saltado while having nice hunks of beef, was very salty, while my cecina was tasty, but quite small and paired only with a fried plantain (along with the tacu tacu). The menu might be worth it if you come on the weekends, but if you are a backpacker, you will likely be disappointed here. Holiday style travelers will like this place.

(Translated by Google) A very nice place if you want to go to eat, the only terrible thing is the service, since the dishes take approximately 45 minutes to come out and when you order something extra they forget and you have to go get it yourself (self-service).. . On the other hand, the à la carte dishes are quite filling (the lomo saltado seemed for two people), the flavor is good - not excellent. Quite affordable prices. (Original) Un lugar muy bonito si quieres ir a comer, lo único terrible, es la atención, ya que los platos se demoran aproximadamente 45 minutos en salir y cuando pides algo extra se olvidan y tú mismo debes ir por ello ( self-service) ... Chachapoyas Cemetery is a serene and tranquil place with ancient tombs and lush vegetation. Despite the peaceful atmosphere, the cemetery is often empty, making it an ideal spot for quiet contemplation or a leisurely stroll to visit loved ones. However, the humid and cold climate has led to concerns about the stability of some tombs. Visitors can easily reach this beautiful location on foot or by taxi in just a few minutes from the town square.

AMERICAN pizzas with thick, tart paste. The garlic bread consisted in slices of industrial soft bread. This being said, if you are open-minded the pizza was tasty and a "familiar pizza" (40cm) serves two people for 50 soles. Overpriced.

I had one of the best wood fire pizza in a while here! It is a cozy place tucked away in a partially open air space. The owner is very friendly and welcoming. I would definitely recommend stopping by here!
Anna W — Google review
The location unfortunately is rather hidden. The ambience was run down and basic, but in a charming and nice way. Unfortunately we had to wait a really long time for our pizza, which was bad timing because we were tired from a hike and just wanted to grab a quick pizza and go to bed. But the three things that saved the whole experience were: The chef personally informed us that it's going to take a while and was apologetic. We got another apology and one pizza was free. And the most important, the pizzas were astonishing. My girlfriend described them as the best she ever had, and I too was flabbergasted by the taste and texture of the pizza. Would absutely recommend.
Domi 9 — Google review
We have been here twice and have thoroughly enjoyed the pizza. The beer and wine is reasonably priced. It's nice to be able to watch our pizzas being made and the wood fueled pizza oven give the pizzas a wonderful taste. Make sure you have the address with you when you are trying to find this place. There are no signs outside or on the door. It's a large black door, open and at first it looks like you're looking into a private courtyard, just look to the left and there is the pizza oven slightly obscured by the door, just walk in and you will see the name of the restaurant on the back wall.

This site is really amazing. We had a guide/driver take us because it is really out in the middle of nowhere (in a good way, since it's not busy). You arrive, pay the small fee, and then can hike to the viewpoints. When we visited in mid-May, there didn't seem to be any horses available. Realize that it's downhill on the way there, and uphill on the way back. It's not a terribly long distance but it was in the sun and we hadn't yet acclimated to the elevation, so we were a bit worn out after our visit. The people in the town were very friendly and offered us some fermented chicha. We purchased a few items, which were honestly far less expensive than other places, so I would recommend buying here if you're interested in something.

I think it is worth it if you also see Kuelap and the mummy museum in Leybamba, don't go to chachapoyas only for this, try see all those so spend at least a few days. I did it without a guide and zero Spanish. It worked out cheaper and more fun that way, there are buses and collectivos that can get you there and back

Amazing archaeological site! The sarcophagi of Karajía are truly impressive, standing high on the cliffs with incredible views of the valley. The place has a unique energy and is very well worth the visit if you’re in the Chachapoyas area. The walk to reach them is short but a bit steep and it takes around 1 hour total (20min down and 40min up). Entrance is S/ 20 for adults. A very special and unforgettable experience!

This was amazing. After walking through farmland (visited an organic potato farm - even digging up the incredibly purple coloured potatoes) for around 4 km, we saw five 2.5 metre tall human shaped tombs (one even had the skull of an enemy above it - check out the last photo). These amazing structures house the mummified remains of Chachapoyas leaders. They are over 1000 years old but were only discovered around the year 2000. You have to see them - they are incredible.
Tracey H — Google review
We were very glad we took the time to visit here. It was an easy 30 min walk down hill to the site (though a steep walk back). The sarcophagi are very impressive, and the history to follow was very interesting. We took binoculars, which we highly recommend to see in detail.
Pippa G — Google review
I really liked the site. If you are planning to drive there be prepared to stop and ask like 20 times for directions. The route is not adequately marked with signs, occasionally you will see a sign, but in the interim, ask. The people are are very friendly. Guides and horses are available for the trek down to the site. After walking 10-12K in Gocta Falls, this is a walk in the park, 4-5K roundtrip.
Victor G — Google review
Long way to get there, and not all routes are open. Normally you can observe sarcophagus from the distance, BUT if you have a drone….😎it’s possible to get shots like that 😉 Horses available, which is a big plus!!

After journeying through Latin America for an extended period, I have become accustomed to avoiding beef due to its typically tough texture and subpar preparation in most establishments. However, at La Tushpa, they excel in cooking beef and other meats to perfection. The cuts are tender, juicy, and absolutely delightful. My companion and I were thoroughly satisfied with our meal choices - she opted for the medallions of beef while I indulged in the grill for one.
Having travelled for over a year in Latin America, I’ve grown used to avoiding beef, as it is normally tough, cooked poorly, and disappointing in most places. The beef and other meats we enjoyed at La Tushpa were cooked perfectly, were tender cuts, and were juicy and delicious. My girlfriend and i were extremely pleased that we came here. She had medallions of beef (35 soles) and I had the grill for one (25 soles). The meal comes ají, Mayo, and a very good chimichurri sauce, all of which our server brought more of upon request. Our passion fruit juice was tasty as well. If you’ve been traveling for a while and want a good piece of beef, I highly recommend visiting this place. It’s more expensive then a typical dinner, but it’s worth it, if you looking to treat yourself.

We were on time yesterday, that is, 8:30 pm and when we ordered a dish from the menu they told us that there was no meat for it, but rather other dishes that were not to our liking; Then we asked to take one from the list and there was none; However, we stayed because we were very tired; In the end when we had to pay the bill, it was only in cash even though there was a VISA sign and the last thing at the time of paying in cash they asked us for simple because they had nothing to give us the change!!! I NEVER plan to return there again even though the food was well made and the alternative drink we picked up. What a pity since because of the favorable comments I chose to go to dinner there. (Original) Necesita mejorar su atención. Q lástima ya q por los comentarios favorables escogí ir a cenar allí.

Nestled in the heart of the main square, Cafe Fusiones is a vibrant and inviting spot that beckons travelers with its cheerful yellow walls and rustic wood-beamed ceilings. This eclectic cafe prides itself on supporting local farming co-ops while adhering to organic principles and fair trade practices. Although it may be pricier than some other eateries, the quality of food makes it worth every penny.
We walk sometimes before to find a restaurant with a menu which attract us ! This café was the best solution, very tasty. If we would have stay longer we would have definitely have all our meals in this place. Should be a place to visit absolutely during your stay.

Unfortunately, not so much of a great experience. The place is very beautiful and surrounded by nice and interesting decorations. The service and the food was a little disappointing tho. Service was very inattentive and slow. We ordered some sandwiches to try; they were small, plain, and the taste was nothing special.
Adrian H — Google review
It was fine, and it tasted good. But to be honest, I was expecting just a little bit more. They have new prices and the breakfast was the same as other places.

Had the sandwich veggi grill with hummus. The vegetables were sour and soggy, the hummus was like a warm bean soup and there was a tortilla instead of bread. Service was great and the jamaica tea as well but wouldn't go there again.

A nice cozy café with good wifi, comfy couches, bookshelf, delicious, fresh and healthy menu, many vegan options - and self produced coffee. One evening the waitress invited me to see the process of roasting coffee beans upstairs - so cool! The owners and stuff are super friendly.

We have been three times at this exceptional place because the food and ambience are amazing and the waiters are nice and attentive. The pasta, lasagne and soups were very tasty and I can highly recommend to try them. My only disappointment was the vegetarian burger. Instead of a proper vegetarian burger, they serve a sandwich with a lentil patty and no fries whereas the meat burger is served with a burgerbun and fries. As a vegetarian you feel kinda fooled when ordering a burger.

I was disappointed with service but generally ok. Super nice atmosphere if you want to just sit down and work quietly and have a coffee or tea. Food mediocre. Hamburger low quality and does not not taste good.

This is a fantastic restaurant with the best Pisco sours we had in the whole of Peru. The menu is varied and delicious. The staff are really happy to help with choosing gluten free Coeliac friendly items. However the service is unbelievably slow even when the restaurant is quiet which is why I can't possibly give the restaurant a higher ranking

(Translated by Google) Compared to what I paid, it's the most uncomfortable seat I've ever traveled in. I was planning on taking Móvil Bus as usual, but they ran out of seats, and since it was an emergency, I had to use this company. It's horribly hot and there's nowhere to rest my feet. I feel like I'm slipping on that uncomfortable seat, and I can't stand it anymore. I would never travel with this company again. The only thing worth mentioning is the staff; the drivers are careful drivers. The rest is nothing.

Really nice restaurant in Chacha, the service is very welcoming & friendly and the atmosphere relaxed & cosy (especially by the fireplace in the evening). They have a great selection of regional dishes, everything is delicious and in big quantities.

Very nice and engaging owner couple. Husband speaks excellent English and studied at Washington state, learning his beer craft trade. He’s working on a tap room and brewing a stout soon. The owner started as a home brewer - I noticed the keezer and 55L kegerator setups. The one and only draft beer (that they call ‘artesenal’) is indeed good! It’s a red ale that he brewed a few months back. Oh and the food is great - get the trout with quinoa crust, natural juices are great. The yellow selva soup with pork and choclos fantastic. They also own the cafe next door.

Delicious food in a very comfortable and welcoming environment. I bet the dessert parlor’s goodies taste as wonderful as they look. Good value for the food.

The food was fine but nothing special. For the price I expected a little bit more. The restaurant ist beautifully decorated and the hygienic conditions are good. The service was also fine. The "Pollo a la Plancha" was quite boring and the sauce kind of saved the whole dish. The "Cecino de Res" was good but the whole dish (Meat, fried Yuca and Rice) was made of dry ingredients - the sauce of the Chicken also saved that one too. The "Alitas" were fine but the BBQ Sauce was lame. The drinks were good. All in all a good restaurant, but for the price point a little but overrated.

A very nice place where some of the staff also speak English. And they have an English menu. We especially enjoyed the great cocktails

One of the nicer restaurants in Chachapoyas. Me and my wife have been here in August 2025 and had a very good experience. The menu offers a great variety of traditional amazonian dishes and the food is really tasty. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy.
