Loja in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Loja, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Loja is known as Ecuador’s “musical capital,” with a strong tradition of live music, cultural festivals, and well-preserved colonial architecture in its compact historic center. The city offers access to nearby Podocarpus National Park, a biodiverse cloud forest area popular for hiking and birdwatching. Its mild mountain climate, pedestrian-friendly streets, and numerous plazas and churches create a relaxed, small-city atmosphere. Museums, theaters, and universities give Loja an active cultural life that feels authentic rather than overtly touristy.
With favorites like Dumas Restaurante, San Francisco Church, and Parque Recreacional Jipiro, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Dumas Restaurante and Salón Lolita so you can get the best taste of Loja while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Parque Recreacional Jipiro, located north of downtown, is a large park offering various activities for visitors. On weekends, it's a great spot for people-watching and affordable leisure pursuits such as horseback riding and paddle boating. The park features sports courts, mini-train rides, and replicas of iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and St Basil's Cathedral. Families can enjoy picnics on the well-maintained grounds with ample seating options.
Such a cool park! There’s a variety of activities to do here for kids and adults. They have row boats in the water and a lot of different playgrounds for kids. The birds are also beautiful there’s a flamingo!

Jipiro Park is a good place where you can feel very relax, specially on weekends. This place offers you a lot of thing such as: horse riding, childish games, canoe ride and some soccer and baskteball fields, where you can practice sports with your family. So, if you want to be relax rounded by green spaces, to have a picnic or walk with your pets, you should go there. North of town, this kid-friendly park offers a giant chessboard, a skate park, a Chinese pagoda, a pint-size Kremlin, small animal enclosures and a paddleboat pond.
Pablo S — Google review
Looks like a fun park but it was CLOSED today on Saturday, August 22, 2020. We walked the perimeter and took some pics. They had barb wire and fences all around it to keep people out, doesn't look like it will open soon. Too bad 😱. There are two streams that cut thru the park, one is nice, one is filthy - see the scary pic where they merge.
Tim T — Google review
I adore this park! It is really big and you can see important places from other countries! Also, you can drive a boat through all the park.
Valeria T — Google review
What an elaborately fun park for children and adults. There is so much to do and see. The kids loved riding the electric and peddle vehicles. Bike riding, walking and feeding the ducks were also fun.

(Translated by Google) It is a very striking park, you have everything from a swimming pool at the entrance to typical dining rooms. The buildings are beautiful, take the opportunity to take photos of everything. I highly recommend sailing on the small lake they have, it is a very nice experience, but preferably you go on the boat with a swan because it has a parasol and that way you protect your skin while you sail.

The Mama Lola restaurant is a very cultural place of Loja because you can find typical food of city. It has various food for example: dried meat, guinea pig. also they sell bocadillos, they are typical sweets of city, and the place is decorated with the cultural picture about the history of Loja. All the food is delicious, I love to eat meat with potato and horchata, the horchata is a typical drink of Loja, is a nice place to share with family, yesterday I went to eat with my sister, my nephew and my sister in law, sometimes there is live music too. For me it is the best place to eat the typical food of Loja. The Gate of the City, or Puerta de la Ciudad, stands as a majestic entryway into downtown Loja, Ecuador. This impressive castle-like structure features an arched doorway that welcomes visitors from the north and leads them down Sucre street towards vibrant central plazas. Built in the late 1990s, it is unique to Loja and houses a small museum showcasing local culture alongside charming metal sculptures of Don Quijote and Sancho Panza.
Beautiful view from the top. Great cafe and restaurant upstairs.

Very nice place to take pictures from the street and the tower offers a great view of the city. There was a temporary exhibition of Maria de Lourdes Balarezo, an artist from Quito. Recommended.

The city of Loja is a charming destination to visit, it is renowned for its music scene and rich cultural heritage. Puerta de la ciudad, it represents a magical space due to its structure in the form of a castle in the center of the city. People are attentive, respectful and kind to tourists. This place is always kept clean and quiet. We were really excited to walk into town from the bus terminal and be able to cross a bridge and walk through this dramatic city gate. It looks 100 years old but surprisingly is fairly recent. Nice detail and picturesque. A great feature of Loja! An historically accurate representation of a Spanish Colonial City Gate that has become one of the major sites in Loja for great photo opportunities. Near other historical artworks and place you do not want to miss on your visit to Loja!

When in Piura, a stroll along Calle Lourdes will lead you to the charming San Francisco Church, where you can admire its colonial architecture. The church is one of several worth visiting in the area, offering a serene atmosphere for spiritual reflection. Inside, you'll discover hidden gems like its gardens and experience the magic it holds. During Christmas holidays, the church hosts a beautiful nativity scene.
At nights you can have a very special food from the city, Humitas and Tamales, definitely a must, this will be outside the church. Regarding the church itself, there is a lot of magic inside and some not very known places as the gardens they have... Must explore!

Nestled just behind the cathedral in Loja, Ecuador, Dumas Restaurante is a hidden gem that you won't want to miss. Owned by the charming and talented chef Roberto Delgado, this eatery offers a delightful blend of traditional lunches with a gourmet twist. While their lunch menu is impressive, it's the à la carte options available from Monday to Friday evenings that truly shine. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, making it easy to unwind as you savor each bite.
I love this place! They make the most amazing empanadas: soft on the inside, and crispy on the outside, in four different flavors. The cheese and mushroom one is my fav. Only $5 for two. They also have the best coffee in town, and a yummy, affordable lunch menu as well. Service is always top notch and friendly, and they remember me now when I come in. Custom orders are also not a problem--they always let me substitute my salad for fruit. It's set back a bit from the street, so not too loud, and they have tables with outlets next to them so you can charge your computer while you're using their free wifi. Truly a gem in Loja.

Nice place jyst behind the cathedral, you can easily walk past it. Do not walk past, go in and enjoy the easy atmosphere. The tables are clean the staff are friendly the food is great. One odd thing for me coming from England, at the bottom of the stairs on the dining room floor is a toilet, a wooden box toilet. The toilet is small but clean, toilet paper, soap, and paper towels. I have never seen anything like this before. The place was very busy, give it a try.

We have eaten here more than once and we will gladly return! Breakfast and dinner here are both wonderful. Every dish is a delicious work of art and you can tell a lot of thought has gone into the presentation and flavor and the staff are very professional, friendly and patient with my limited Spanish. I also highly recommend the Moscow Passion, a tropical twist on the Moscow Mule. I look forward to introducing Dumas to my friends.
