PETAR - Alto Ribeira State and Tourist Park is a 357-square-kilometer state park located in the Atlantic forest, boasting over 350 caves, waterfalls, and rivers. It is often referred to as Brazil's 'Cave Capital' due to its 450 cataloged caves. The park features four well-equipped visitor centers providing information on cave trips, guides, and campgrounds.
Park is breathtaking, astonishingly lush and magical. Hardly find words to describe it! More than 300 caves and waterfalls are everywhere, people are also really friendly. No doubt it is a international travelers hotspot!

This natural park can offer you a great opportunity to have a deep contact with the nature in different ways! Here you can enjoy a lot of caves with different styles and difficulties, hiking all day long over different directions, even the river in a calm place become a natural pool. For entrance, you should pay a small fee (20 Brazilian Reais, approximately 4 dollars - Sep 2022), and you can free parking in the entrance area. Important: to access the caves, you need hire an official guide from this region to go together to you and/or your group

One of the best experiences in Brazil. Lots of fascinating waterfalls, gorgeous rivers and scenery. Not to mention the mysterious and wonderful caves. I would visit this place again and again. Totally recommend.

Amazing natural park (caves and tracks) with professional and knowledgable guides. A deep and safe adventure that requires not much of physical strength.

This virtually unknown park is full of amazing caves, beautiful sceneries, and warm rivers.
Tymon J — Google review
It is a beautiful place. However, one has to have a guide, they tend to serve you primitive attractions (like listening to music in cave) and enforce a number of regulations that neither increase safety nor pleasure (like crossing the river wearing shoes and walking later in wet shoes). Really unpleasent experience. I recommend finding another park to explore Mata Arlantica.
Piotr W — Google review
The caves here are phenomenal and merit more foreign visitors. Some of the caves are huge, others smaller. One is actually a tunnel exiting elsewhere from where there is a lovely 2km trek back. You need to hire an accredited guide beforehand to go with you, or else you will be turned away (as I saw with another car when we arrived). And believe me - you need a guide for your own safety as the caves extend hundreds of meters inside and you'd be in complete darkness if it were not for the guide's knowledge and our helmet torches (supplied by the guide tour agency). My guide was great, Luis from Monotours, with whom I spoke Portuguese. I also used my mobile/cell phone flashlight to better illuminate the stones we often stepped or scrambled over.

Thick Gold Cave is a hidden gem that offers an unforgettable adventure for nature lovers. The journey begins with a short and easy 2 km trail from Mr. Abilio's inn, leading you to the cave where you'll be greeted by a stunning waterfall nestled within its depths. While waiting for your turn to enjoy the waterfall can be part of the experience, it’s definitely worth it!
(Translated by Google) A waterfall inside the cave! Short and easy trail to get to the waterfall, it was full when we went, we had to wait a little, but it was SO worth it! A wonderful experience. Helmet and flashlight are essential, the walk is through water, so your shoes get wet, ideal to go with grippy shoes. (Original) Uma cachoeira dentro da caverna! Trilha curta e fácil pra chegar na cachoeira, estava vem cheia quando fomos, tivemos que esperar um pouco, mas valeu a pena DEMAIS! Uma experiência maravilhosa. (Translated by Google) From Mr. Abílio's inn we walked 2 km until we reached the cave. Once there, we equipped ourselves with helmets with flashlights (provided by the guide). I recommend that you bring a cap and a small flashlight with a clip (to attach to the brim), as the flashlight on the helmet was not very strong. It is mandatory to wear pants (bring light ones, made of tactel, as you will rub a lot) and a waterproof bag, especially for your cell phone. The trail is very steep and requires good physical fitness. There are many slippery rocks. Some places have support ropes, others do not. It is very cool, but a little scary. The entrance fee is R$20.00 and students and retirees pay half price.

(Translated by Google) The cave is gigantic but we only went to the initial part and entered a crevice with water. I recommend not being afraid to explore as it is a certain initial fear but that passes after we have entered the water up to our chest. Due to heavy rain we didn't make much progress. But it was worth the experience! Detail to the naked eye the cave appears to have golden pigments that resemble gold.

Nestled within the stunning Santana Nucleus of PETAR, Rio Betari - Piscina Natural is a breathtaking destination that beckons nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. With its crystal-clear waters shimmering under the sun, this natural pool offers both shallow areas perfect for children and deeper sections for those looking to take a refreshing dip. Visitors should be mindful of the rocky bottom, which can be uncomfortable for bare feet.
(Translated by Google) The natural pools of the Betary River are located within the Santana Nucleus at PETAR. The river has crystal clear waters and in some spots the bottom has a greenish tint. It has shallow stretches that are ideal for children, but there are also deeper parts in the same place. Be careful with children and people who can't swim! The bottom is full of small rocks and it can be a bit uncomfortable to go in barefoot. The place also has a small beach with wooden benches... ideal for having a snack on the trail. There is a bathroom about 100 meters away, as it is close to one of the entrances to the Santana Nucleus. About 30 meters before there is a narrow wooden bridge for pedestrians. The place is incredible and surrounded by lots of greenery. However, the water is very cold even in hot weather. It is worth visiting! You will want to take lots of photos! (Original) As piscinas naturais do Rio Betary fica dentro do Núcleo Santana no PETAR. Vale a pena conhecer! Vc vai querer tirar muitas fotos!
