Salinas in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Salinas, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Salinas is one of Ecuador’s most popular Pacific beach resorts, known for its wide sandy beaches, warm waters and long, lively malecón lined with restaurants and bars. Visitors come for water activities such as surfing, jet-skiing, whale-watching (in season) and sport fishing, especially around the nearby La Chocolatera and La Lobería viewpoints. The town offers a mix of modern high-rise beachfront condos and more casual local areas, giving it a distinctly urban-coastal feel. Its relatively dry, sunny climate for much of the year makes it a favored seaside escape for both Ecuadorians and international travelers.
With favorites like El Museo de Ballenas, Manabar, and La Isla del Marisco Salinas, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like La Isla del Marisco Salinas and Manabar so you can get the best taste of Salinas while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Shopping mall
Paseo Shopping Peninsula is a modern and spacious shopping mall in Ecuador, offering a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. The mall features a large grocery store connected to a home depot-style store, as well as clothing stores and familiar U.S. food chains like KFC and Burger King. Visitors can also enjoy cinemas, bowling alleys, and arcades for entertainment.
Groceries, Banking, Shopping, Food Court and a Western Union. Cellphone carriers are in the Mall as well as a hardware store and a Sweet & Coffee. Juan Valdez just started work on a new kiosk inside the mall.
Donnie A — Google review
Good selection of stores! Many banks available and the supermarket is easily accessible
Amylie — Google review
This place is good a little too small but is the only one in the area, it is not bad still supermarkets are there as well so that's a plus and also food is good as well the place is clean and secure they close pretty early though but you still can hace some good food late at night
Brayan E — Google review
Small shopping mall with a little of everything. But now too small and dated. Needs a facelift.
Lee M — Google review
This is the first time I saw a elevated guard Tower in a parking lot for a mall. That's kind of good unless you are trying to break into a car and steal something. There is a multi product department store with groceries as well as a food court.. movie theaters.. SIM card store and More.. The first time I went there at seemed all-inclusive and a little overwhelming. But the second time I went there I was not at all impressed.. But it is clean safe and air-conditioned
Rickie M — Google review
Its got an american mall set up for those who cannot live without
John J — Google review
A really big Ecuadorian mall. Has a massive grocery store linked to an home depot type store, something for everyone. And clothing as well. A large food court with some U.S. familiar names like KFC and Burger King. However, I will attest their KFC chicken (to me) was better than any U.S. version I've had. Tender and juicy.
Bill E — Google review
It gets four stars for its supermarket but the mall is basically void of people and the shops are way overpriced. The food court doesn't offer much variety. It's there to cater to the wealthy.

Fishing pier
Muelle del Malecon de Salinas is a popular boardwalk that runs along the beach, offering a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops for both tourists and locals to enjoy. It's an ideal place for leisurely strolls while taking in the beautiful ocean views. Additionally, visitors have the opportunity to take boat tours from this spot. However, some concerns have been raised about the lack of restroom facilities in the area.
Loved it. You can get a ride on small boats and swim in deep waters.
David P — Google review
Some aging beachfront hotel/condos lined with shops, cafe's and restaurants. Our fried fish, fries and salad were excellent and all for about $8. The off season is low key and easy but high season is booming and packed with visitors in the "Fiesta Mode."
Bascom K — Google review
The main pier in Salinas Ecuador. Most local boat trips start there. Whale watching among others.

This is a nice addition to the the malicon, this is an opettuinty to enjoy Salinas from a different observation point, also this is a place that you can take boat tour, there is a concern I have and that is the lack of toilets.

Beaches
Playa de Salinas is a popular beach in Ecuador known for its pristine white sand and clear waters, making it perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. Located about two and a half hours from Samborondon, the beach offers a relaxed atmosphere with amenities such as restaurants, bars, and cafes. Visitors can rent umbrellas and chairs for the day at an affordable price while being offered various services by friendly locals.
The beach has easy access from the beach walk. The beach is clean and has various activities available including cabana and umbrella. When I was there Ecuador was playing the Peru Soccer team and there was a giant tv set up on the beach with speakers. There are plenty of restaurants and a couple of beach bars. I would encourage you to visit La Chocolatera the furthest West Point of Ecuador. The taxi will wait for you and drive you back to Salinas.
Michael H — Google review
Went at night for dinner but there were plenty of options and the beach was not crowded.
Jackie L — Google review
Good to relax by the beach, do water sports and take tours for whale watching during season. Waves on this beach are calm and you can go in the water

Very nice experience. Absolutely love the experience the beach is beautiful the zone pretty safe. I will come back for sure. Enjoyed a lot staying in this place nice facility as well
Alejandro C — Google review
Salinas Beach is always pretty. Now, in September, there's less traffic and a great opportunity to explore. The beaches are clean, and the water is inviting, although (to me) is a wee bit on the cooler side. Lots and lots of folks are still swimming and playing water sports.
Bill E — Google review
Fun beach but very crowded for carnival
Louis S — Google review
Salinas is located two hours and 30 minutes away from Samborondon. The roads are good. The beach looks nice, no waves, good for the kids. The locals charge only $5.00 to rent an umbrella and chairs for the entire day. They approach you to offer everything from seafood meals to cocktails to clothing. I must say that Salinas seemed rather expensive compared to other beach towns we have been to.

Specialty Museums
Nestled just a block from the bustling Malecon in Salinas, El Museo de Ballenas is a hidden gem dedicated to the fascinating world of whales and dolphins. This charming museum, curated by the passionate Mr. Haase, offers an intimate glimpse into marine biology through his impressive personal collection of whale bones and skeletons. Unlike typical museums with uninspired guides, here you’ll find an enthusiastic host who shares his extensive knowledge in multiple languages, making it accessible for everyone.
Very great museum! You can learn a lot of things of many different species of whales! Costs $3 per person, guide speaks English, Spanish, French, German and Dutch!
Levi K — Google review
A charming private collection from a man who is very knowledgeable and passionate about his research of both whales and marine birds. Very engaging and friendly! There aren't many museums where you are encouraged to touch the bones!
Karolina A — Google review
It was an interesting and nice experience. I recommend don't skip this museum if you're coming to Santa Elena. They also do private expeditions to watch whales in the ocean.

Amazing! The owner is absolutely thrilled to share his passion. It is very much worth your time! I guess it's a good idea to set up an appointment. We got lucky, but had we com 20 minutes before or after and we wouldn't have been so lucky.

Just a block off of the Malecón, this museum is a wonderful resource for information about Cetáceos (whales and dolphins). Our guide was fluent in English, Spanish, French, German and Dutch and was very willing to translate into multiple languages to explain to all the members of our group. Mr. Haase was also extremely knowledgeable and passionate about these topics as well as the seabirds. Great displays of the bones, skeletons, photos, etc.

Punta Carnero, Ecuador

Beach
Nestled on the southern edge of the Santa Elena Peninsula, Punta Carnero, Ecuador, offers a unique blend of tranquility and adventure. Just a short drive from Salinas, this stunning beach stretches approximately 2.6 kilometers and features soft white to gray sands kissed by medium waves and a refreshing inland breeze. Often feeling like your own private paradise due to its underpopulated shores, it's an ideal spot for those seeking peace before embarking on their travels.
Punta Carnero Beach is not a crowded beach, it's usually a relaxing spot at Santa Elena's Peninsula. You can find few places to eat right across the street, in front of the beach. The waves and the current are considered to be medium-strong, so be careful when taking a dip. If you have time by your side, you can visit the salt hills or enjoy one of the best spots in Ecuador to watch the sunset!

Restaurant
La Isla del Marisco Salinas is a delightful seafood restaurant that offers an extensive menu featuring both coastal Ecuadorian and Peruvian dishes, along with other culinary delights. Diners can expect attentive service and prompt delivery of hot meals, with generous portions that often lead to leftovers. The atmosphere is inviting, making it a great spot for food lovers eager to explore various flavors.
A very nice meal with attentive service. The menu is so extensive there are two of them 😃 and English is also on most items. Service was attentive and food came quickly, and hot. The vegetables were nicely prepared, nothing was pre salted. Very appreciative of this. Portions are big. And the prices were not as high as we expected based on the selection of items. Definitely want to return to try other things. Both of us needed to take half our meals home. Crab canastas and breaded chicken with smashed potatoes and steam vegetables were substitute for the rice.
Birds P — Google review
Food was good and decently priced. I felt like the food didnt march the atmosphere... there was so much on the menu it was hard to choose something... I would go again. Both hubby and I enjoyed our food
Rolanda M — Google review
We've been in Ecuador for five days now and this is by far the best food we've tried. The regular menu and separate higher-priced chef's menu each have an incredible variety of options. We tried four different dishes and each was excellent, with particular shout-outs for the grilled octopus and the goat stew. The wine was reasonably priced and enjoyable.
Gregg L — Google review
One of the best tasting octopus I had since being in Ecuador. Staffs are very friendly and they also have an English menu. Love it.
Luben S — Google review
It's aircon which is a nice break from the beach. Staff was very nice and helpful but the ceviche lacked care and taste. Unfortunately I will not return.
Luis N — Google review
This seafood restaurant specializes in coastal Ecuadorian and Peruvian foods but not limited to seafood only. The prices are high (U.S. prices) for Ecuadorian standards but the food was delicious and worth your money! My dad had the 'Seco de Chivo' or Goat stew, which he claims was the best he ever had. I had the 'Canesillas de Lomo' which were plantain cups filled with steak, avocado, tomato, beans, & cheese. They were awesome!
Eric B — Google review
I don’t know if I was the exception , or what happened . But my ceviche had already bad fish , and even smelled . And my plantain dish was not fully cooked , the inside was still raw , on a dish that should be well cooked, I still paid $54 for my tab . But had to stress to the server the importance of the food to Be no only edible but to not cause a disease to their costumers . I will certainly never eat here again , and I strongly recommend to the readers to avoid this place.
George B — Google review
The place was empty. Had a garlic shrimp. Nothing to write home about; you can do better in Salinas. Also had a Bloody Mary, which I would describe as bland and weak. Not recommended.

If you find yourself in Salinas, make sure to stop by Manabar for a delightful dining experience. This charming restaurant offers an array of delicious dishes that are sure to please any palate. Guests rave about the huevos rancheros and the amazing club sandwich, which is a must-try! The natural melon juice is also a standout, with its unique appearance reminiscent of beer. The staff at Manabar are incredibly friendly and attentive, going above and beyond to accommodate dietary needs like dairy allergies.
Our first stop in Salinas and it did not disappoint. The food was fantastic. The octopus salad and the Shrimp Ceviche was super fresh and the drinks were great. Staff was very friendly as well. Also great views of the beach from the restaurant.

If you're in the mood for an AMAZING club sandwich, this is your place. I also ordered natural melon juice, which looks like beer, and I'll be craving that for life now, I think. Easy to locate and in the shade in late afternoon so it's nice and cool.
Erica T — Google review
On the way from the Playa de Chipipe to Malecon Salinas you might pass by the colorful Manabar restaurant and bar to take in some food, beverages and pictures. Unfortunately I only had time to take pictures but it sure looks like a great place to stop in for some food and drinks I love the vibe. Even though I was gawking from the exterior, the waitress and bartender were friendly and smiling. I sure hope I have time to get back to it.
Rickie M — Google review
Had a wonderful breakfast at Manabar. We were staying close by this restaurant and passing it by on a daily basis because there were no reviews. We dropped by one morning for breakfast and we're sure glad we did. The food was excellent. I really enjoyed my huevos Ranchero. Staff was very friendly and helpful showing concern for my wife's dairy allergy. Nothing but good things to say about this place.

Salty food. Wait was decent. Waiter was very nice. This is one of the places where you go once because you're hungry and you kinda enjoy the food, but you wouldn't go again.

Slow and wired service. Is confused by there own menu and brings the wrong stuff - I just order one thing.... Food is still good, even though I got the wrong one.

Excellent food and excellent service!! We saw the reviews of this and decided to give it a go - every single dish was made perfectly and was delicious. We were lucky enough to be served by a lovely waiter (whom I unfortunately didn’t catch the name of) and also got talking to the owner who was so lovely and friendly and ended up giving us a dessert on the house! The place is very homely and welcoming with pictures all over the wall and wine displayed everywhere. We only spent 2 days in Salinas but ended up visiting twice because we knew no place would be better than this!! Next time we come back to Salinas we will definitely be back!!

Not my favorite. I've eaten Italian food all over the world - including in Italy, and this was far down on my list of good Italian food. The food we had was bland, extremely overpriced, and super small portions. I suppose if you were born and raised in Ecuador and don't know better, this is decent Italian food. For those who've had the real thing, this doesn't compare on any level.
