Nestled in the stunning Newlands Pass, Moss Force Waterfall is a majestic sight to behold, standing at 328ft high. The waterfall consists of three sections, with water splitting around a rock projection before cascading down the ravine. It's one of several waterfalls in the Lake District near Buttermere, offering varying levels of difficulty to reach. Despite its relatively easy accessibility and nearby parking, visitors should be cautious as it can get slippery closer to the waterfall.
This waterfall above Buttermere was just amazing.. . a short walk from the car park and easy to access, though the final ascent to the top was very rocky and slippery! But the views were just glorious ...
Gary W — Google review
Stunning place! The drive leading to the waterfall offers breathtaking views and you can already see it from the route. The waterfall is located literally next to a free car park so you don’t have to walk far. There is a hike leading further up next to it too. Worth popping by to see such a beauty! Views are stunning.
A — Google review
A beautiful area. Great view of the waterfall from the car park (which is free). A steep climb to the top, or base of the waterfall but fantastic views that make it worth it
Viking D — Google review
Stopped off on my way to Buttermere definitely worth while stopping it's a 15-minute walk to Moss Force waterfall from the carpark. There are some absolutely stunning views from the top.
Ben W — Google review
Just unbelievable, you could see almost the whole course of the waterfall from the top of the mountain. Beautiful green space all around. Very good condition of the road (visited in summer). Plenty of free parking below the waterfall. No tickets needed.
Aida R — Google review
Lovely waterfall short walk from car park. Road getting there was very scenic. Just amazing

Very short walk from the car park to the falls. Can be slippy. Beautiful.

St James' Church in Buttermere boasts a complimentary carpark situated above the chapel that remains accessible around-the-clock. While small in size, this parking area extends onto the roadside, ensuring ample space for visitors. It is worth noting that the lot tends to fill up quickly, so it is advisable to arrive early or during the evening hours. This quaint little church serves as an excellent starting point for embarking on a circular walk around Buttermere.
It certainly is a charming little church at the junction of the Honister and Newlands passes. There is a rough (free) car park just up behind the church. Lovely to have the church open during the day. Unusual iron shepherd gate (1968) at the entrance to this 1840 built church. The font bowl is from an earlier chapel of ease. Some fine stained glass, and by one window a memorial tablet to Alfred Wainwright - look by the organ.
Roy S — Google review
Lovely little church. The needlepoint hassocks at each seat are works of art, well worth the climb up a very steep hill so be warned! Charming place, don’t miss it.
Carol D — Google review
Charming little church, parking free just beyond the church for about 20 cars, no amenities here but a short walk into Buttermere Originally built in 1500s but present church was built in the 1840s Usually open for a visit and still holds srro

Mountain peak
Rannerdale Knotts is a picturesque Cumbrian hill in the Lake District, featuring a moderate ascent to its peak at 1,165 feet. A popular 7.5-mile circular walk takes approximately four hours and offers breathtaking views of Buttermere and the surrounding peaks. The route showcases beautiful meadows, lakeshores with beech and yellow birch trees, and stunning bluebell displays in spring.
Absolutely fabulous visit and the bluebells are better than recent years. Dappled sunshine and views of the bells again lakes and mountains perfect for those camera shots. Parking is hard unless you are before 9. Mind you I suspect an evening viewing would be perfect.
Alan J — Google review
Great hill to walk up. We parked in a small, free carpark next to Crummock Water, then headed half a mile up steep, stony paths to reach the top. The view from above just after sunset time was simply stunning. Unfortunately we missed the bluebells though, maybe next year!
Donna W — Google review
I did this walk from the car park at Crummock water two days ago and loved it. There is a moderate longish plod up hill through Rannerdale to the col opposite Robinson - and then the lovely undulating ridge walk with spectacular views of the fells and lakes below. Sadly I was just too early to capture the fields of bluebells near Squat beck. I agree with other reviews that the very steep stone steps down from the summit of Rannerdale Knott need a lot of care - they can be slippery or uneven. But this is a walk I'd certainly do again, maybe in May when the bluebells are more spectacular. You can see them in my second photo if you look hard! They are there. The last photo showing the steep path descending from Rannerdale Knott summit needs to be rotated 90 degrees I think.

A beautiful spot just off the beaten track and not too busy, great place to spot random airforce flybys too
Alex C — Google review
This is a small yet quirky mountain. When you hike from Whiteless Pike you get to walk up the lovely ridge to the summit. The route back down to the road is reasonable as well, and the views from the top of Crummock Water are immense.
Rob — Google review
Amazing views. The walk wasn't too strainuous. It took us 3 hours to walk from the Buttermere village to the Rannerdale summit and down again to Buttermere. The way down from the summit was very steep and slippery so be careful.
Vincent R — Google review
Excellent medium fell walk that starts gently up the hidden valley, then breathtaking views of Fleetwirth Pike, Hay stacks, Scarth Gap, Red Pike, Grasmoor, & Whiteless Pike, as well as three lakes. Final decent is short and tricky down steps but we managed it with a nutty dog & an 82 year old. Arrive early as parking is limited.
Moss E — Google review
A lovely little hill with stunning views in all directions. We visited during bluebell season, and a walk through these is fairly easy. Well worth a visit

Crummock Water is a picturesque lake nestled among majestic mountains, making it an ideal spot for leisurely walks and delightful picnics while soaking in breathtaking views. For those seeking adventure, the nearby Via Ferrata offers a unique experience where participants can traverse historic cliff-edge routes using metal ladders and hand rungs, all under the watchful eye of trained mountaineers.
We loved this walk, from Lanthwaite car park through the woods which we went by the stream and then onto the lake. Stunning area and the dogs had a great time exploring. Water was freezing but we did see some people swimming! Very quiet and peaceful and we had spectacular weather considering mid November!
Kirstie A — Google review
Lovely water. We parked in a small, free carpark to walk up Rannderdale Knotts. The view from above was absolutely stunning over Crummock Water.
Donna W — Google review
Absolutely stunning. A mixture of beautiful water views and fairytale forest. I leave about 4 hrs to walk around the whole lake. You can also stop in buttermere for something to eat.
Hannah B — Google review
Our second family walk around this beautiful lake. It really is a great day out. The National Trust car park makes a great starting point. Especially as this makes the pub the perfect halfway point! The path is easy to follow and the walk isn't too challenging.

Crummock Water is an absolutely stunning and peaceful spot in the Lake District—perfect if you're looking to escape the crowds. Surrounded by dramatic fells like Grasmoor and Mellbreak, the views are breathtaking and the atmosphere is incredibly tranquil. There are some lovely walks around the lake, and the area is ideal for wild swimming, picnics, or just soaking in the scenery. Highly recommend if you want a quiet, natural experience in one of the most beautiful parts of the Lakes.
Chris — Google review
By far one of the most beautiful lakes in the whole lake district, and its also really close to Buttermere so you can easily visit both lakes in the same day. The sun sets behind the fells and it's so beautiful. We went on a rainy day and was still such a stunning place, its one of my favourites.
Donna J — Google review
Had a wonderful walk here, absolutely stunning location and very peaceful when we went. Car park is national trust so free for members. The lake is wonderful and so calm and still. Views are breathtaking

Scale Force Waterfall, located near Buttermere in the Lake District, is a stunning natural wonder that stands at an impressive height of 170 feet. This makes it the tallest waterfall in the area. The waterfall consists of three falls, with two smaller ones measuring around 20 feet each. Visitors can admire the grandeur of Scale Force as it cascades down a steep rockface on the northern side of Red Pike. The surrounding tree-lined gorge adds to its picturesque setting.
Beautiful, secluded, unspoiled spot, in the heart of the Western Lakes - Lovely walk up to it from Buttermere, not over strenuous on either of the two routes, just can get boggy in some places
Ben M — Google review
Wonderful hike to scale Force. It's a stunning waterfall tucked away on the side of Red Pike near Buttermere. The hike is a little technical at times due to erosion of the trail but nothing to complete. If you get to the waterfall erly you will probably have it to yourself. Absolutely stunning location.
Ben W — Google review
Such a rewarding hike once you reach the waterfall, you can climb up the first part and get to the main waterfall at the back. Just be mindful of the rocks as they can be very slippery
Sam S — Google review
Moderate but fun Hike, Some Boggie Parts so Bring Waterproof Boots, well worth the walk.

After a long, scenic walk we enjoyed this treasure. The sound of the waterfall, clean, clear water. Ideal spot for mindfulness sessions. Loved it.

Fantastic place for a day trip. Highly recommend to climb hire to actual waterfall. It is challenging climb, so not for everyone but definitely worth it!

Lovely walk from buttermere village, heading towards buttermere lake but instead turn right and follow the track. You will walk through some very narrow peices and head towards crummock water but you will soon start to follow the track left and start to climb up. Lovely water fallespcially after it has been raining. Kids loved it and I loved the views.

Cafe
Croft House Farm Café is a charming spot situated near the carpark and bus stop in Buttermere. It enjoys a picturesque location with stunning views, being just a short stroll away from the lake and waterfalls. The café offers a delightful ambiance and serves delicious coffee, which can be enjoyed alongside various milk alternatives. They also provide an array of delectable tray bakes that are evidently fresh. Additionally, their menu boasts light lunch options such as paninis and salads.
Friendly, welcoming staff. We were served quickly and didn’t have to wait long for our order. I didn’t get her name but one lady who serviced us was so helpful, she gave us directions to find the highland cows and was so lovely! Hot chocolate is delicious :) toilets and cafe are extremely clean and welcoming.
Izzy T — Google review
One star for atmosphere as the cafe was being renovated and it was basically eat your food and go unless you were sitting outside. This is a walkers/hikers stop off point and is very busy The cakes we purchased were very nice as were our milkshakes. The service was excellent. I suffer from food allergies and you young man who served us took his time to thoroughly check the ingredients.
Lynne P — Google review
Extra busy during bank holiday weekend. Seemed a bit understaffed. They couldn't keep up with cleaning the tables. The queue was long but staff was moving fast. Great coffee. Nice seating areas.
Katarzyna B — Google review
Small cafe but with a good selection of hot and cold food and drinks at reasonable prices. Staff are friendly and helpful. Worth a visit after your walk
Jose E — Google review
Knocked off a star as I felt it was quite expensive. 2 lattes 2 sausage baps and an extra sausage for our dog came to £26. However the service is super friendly it was clean, the sausage baps are delicious, the views great and it was a great place to shelter from a typical Lake District short downpour. I can imagine this place would get very busy in high season but a September week day was very relaxing.
Stefanie L — Google review
Always stop here for delicious cakes and drinks when we are in the area. Friendly staff and dog friendly. Particular shout out to Suzanne and her excellent customer service. We arrived with our newborn baby who needed feeding and I asked if I could have a seat whilst my husband waited in the queue. Suzanne had no issues with this sbd showed me to a seat straight away which was greatly appreciated as this made our (and likely other customers!) visit more relaxing. Many thanks

Stopped here for some lunch. The queue was fairly long and service seems slow, but the staff are friendly and the food is good, lovely place to sit and chill. The WiFi isn’t great

High Crag

5.0
(25)
Mountain peak
High Crag is a rocky fell with a 744-meter summit and offers a hiking trail with stunning views of neighboring peaks. It is part of the Buttermere lake walk, which includes other fells like Haystacks, Fleetwith Pike, Rannerdale Knotts, Grasmoor, High Stile, Robinson, and Red Pike. The area also features the Warnscale Head bothy, providing a panoramic view of Buttermere Valley through its small window.
The final part of the ridge walk that started on Red Pike, continued over High Stile and ends at Scarths gap inbetween The Seat & Haystacks (Wainwrights & my favorite). This part of the ridge undulates with some impressive views of Pillar, the Scawfell range & the Gables with a summit that is in itself unatractive & the descent down to the dip before The Seat is (in my thoughts) easier going down (as path is basically scree).. with the final walk over The Seat to Scarth's gap... (then a choice of continuing over Haystacks to Honister or heading back down to either Gatesgarth or Buttermere)
Baldy J — Google review
Brilliant views of the surrounding area including particularly good views of Haystacks, Fleetwith Pike and Pillar. It is a bit of a technical path off to the east which is more of a scree than a path, making for a challenging descent. According to OS maps there is a path which goes off the main path that cuts across to Scarth Gap, but we could see no evidence off it, despite crossing it a couple of times. It's clearly lost to the sands of time.
Isaac E — Google review
We were lucky enough to get absolutely stunning views all around on our hike along the ridge from Great Borne to high crag
