Punta Ballena in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Punta Ballena, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Punta Ballena is known for its dramatic peninsula jutting into the sea, offering wide views over the Atlantic and some of Uruguay’s most celebrated sunsets. The area’s standout attraction is Casapueblo, the striking clifftop complex built by artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, which functions as a museum, gallery, and hotel. Nearby beaches such as Solanas provide calm waters and long stretches of sand, and in certain seasons the coast becomes a vantage point for spotting whales offshore. Its location just west of Punta del Este makes it an easy side trip while still feeling quieter and more laid-back.
With favorites like Playa Portezuelo, Playa Las Grutas, and Museo Casapueblo, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Restaurante "Terrazas de Casapueblo" and Raviolandia so you can get the best taste of Punta Ballena while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Museo Casapueblo is a stunning and unique museum located in a beautiful house with hidden rooms. The top floor features a restaurant and coffee shop with a balcony offering breathtaking ocean views. Visitors can enjoy simple yet delicious food while taking in the scenery. The museum also includes a cinema room where guests can watch a short film about Carlos Paez Vilaro's adventurous life, along with some of his art on display.
Beautiful museum. Although the museum is small it’s still worth to see it from the inside. Beautiful view that reminds me of Greece. We had luck on the day, it was sunny and the sky was very blue which made it prettier. I bought the tickets online (viator website) and when i got there at around 1:20pm there was no line, which surprised me. The ticket was 15 dollars online, but it was worth it because there was no line.

Must go. The nature landscape is breathtaking, and the sunset with the audio experience of Paez Vilaro reading his poem to the sun, is mind blowing. This a remarkable experience, worth every second. Buy tickets in advance and plan your visit close to the sunset hour, so you can do the museum tours and safe a good spot for the sunset spectacle.
Carlos A — Google review
Visited the museum only, and it was one of the most unique museums I have been to! Spectacular views, nice cafe/bar with the views to the sea to enjoy the sunset. Friendly staff (not to mention even playful kitties around!), really recommend :)
Gin T — Google review
What an amazing property. We didn’t stay in the hotel, but we were able to walk the grounds by visiting the museum and eating at the restaurant whilst we enjoyed the sunset ceremony. The drive from Montevideo took 2 hours, but didn’t feel like that at all as the views kept getting better and better the further we kept going. Then boom - views for days. I have no words for how beautiful and ambitious this whole place is. We got there just in time as they were about to close. Right after we finished walking the grounds, we found a table right outside that was perfectly located with a view of the sunset. We had just gotten our food as the sunset ceremony was about to begin. Let me tell you something. Hearing Carlos Páez Vilaró talk about the sun and thanking it with the beautiful words he used got me all verklempt. Sure did end up sitting there with tears of joy as the sun fully went down. We went to town on the pizza and salad we got after finishing our cocktails. Man, that pizza was perfection. The second we left the property, I told myself I’d be back.

A Hidden Gem with Major Flaws I recently visited Casa Pueblo, and while the architecture is stunning and the location breathtaking, the overall experience was disappointing. The entrance fee of $14 per person feels steep, especially if you just want to grab a meal without visiting the museum. Unfortunately, the lunch experience was far from enjoyable—think more culinary mystery than local flavor. Toilets without soap or water? Check. A friendly yet unprofessional staff? Double check. And the terrace? Let’s just say it had some “surprises” under the tables. It’s a shame that such an iconic place isn’t being maintained properly. If you’re after beautiful art and architecture, Casa Pueblo is a must-see, but be prepared for a few unexpected quirks!
Gabriela R — Google review
It‘s alright. Way too crowded though, it was hard to move. Why not put a cap on the number of visitors?! Took away all the fun of this really nice museum.
Martin K — Google review
Stopped here on a day trip for photo ops. Definitely worth the stop. Would I pay to come and see this all by itself, probably not.
Kimberly Q — Google review
Sadly we arrived by bus on a tour from the ship. The driver parked down the shore and was rushing us. I needed at least 30-60 minutes here just to take in the architecture. I never made it inside the property but what I saw through the gates , behind the guard, looked amazing. I will have to return not on a rushed bus tour .

Playa Portezuelo is a hidden gem nestled in Punta Ballena, Uruguay, just a stone's throw from the bustling Punta del Este. This tranquil beach is perfect for families seeking a peaceful retreat, featuring shallow waters and gentle waves that make it ideal for children to splash around safely. The long stretch of sand invites leisurely strolls, while the stunning sunsets create an unforgettable backdrop for your evening relaxation.
Lots of parking and Freddo and Medio y Medio close by. There is an even a spot on the beach to eat which was decent food and good customer service. We rented two loungers for $50 USD for the day.

Restaurante "Terrazas de Casapueblo" is a stunning dining destination nestled within the iconic Museum of Casapueblo, the former home of renowned artist Carlos Vilaro. This restaurant offers breathtaking views of the water, making it an ideal spot to enjoy a meal while soaking in the picturesque surroundings. Super delicious meals & plated beautifully. Amazing views & great service . Definitely recommended ❤️
Mahani O — Google review
Not too expensive, great food and drinks, and beeeautiful sunset! Worth the time and one of the nicest places to go while in Punta The service is a bit lacking, with waiters taking long to notice anything or even pass by, though the amount of waiters is enough.
Rafael O — Google review
The restaurant is set in the lovely Museum of Casapueblo, home of Carlos Vilaro. The food was excellent and the price was very good. The server was very nice and she was able to give us a quick meal because we came in a tour bus. The view of the water is awesome take your time and enjoy it.
Theresa H — Google review
Our server left in the middle of us at the table. Our orders were never put in and we were left an hour without our food. They didn’t even put in our order.
Coach R — Google review
This is solely a review of the casa Pueblo restaurant. The place is astonishingly beautiful and is well worth the visit but the quality of the food is just ok and the service is quite slow (albeit really friendly). To avoid just photo-taking tourists in the restaurant anyone can access it but will have to “pre-pay” 600 Uruguayan pesos of consumption in advance.
David R — Google review
Very good food and the price was much better than I would have expected. Lunch with an amazing view in an iconic building. Of course dont miss out on exploring the whole museum and history of our great Paez Vilaro.

What a great place and what an excellent service. We have enjoyed the stay very much. The Menue is dedicatedly small but the dishes are all to be recommended. The restaurant is actually managed by the Lo de Terre, which again is one of the top places to go!
