Santa Maria di Leuca in 4 days

If you only have 4 days to spend in Santa Maria di Leuca, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Santa Maria di Leuca sits at the southern tip of Italy’s Salento peninsula, where the Ionian and Adriatic seas meet, giving it striking coastal views and clear water. The town is known for its lighthouse and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, a historic pilgrimage site overlooking the sea. Rugged cliffs, caves, and grottoes along the coastline can be explored by boat, while nearby sandy beaches offer calmer swimming spots. An elegant seafront promenade and 19th-century villas add a touch of historic charm to this small seaside resort.
With favorites like Monumental waterfall of the Apulian aqueduct in Santa Maria di Leuca, Grotta del soffio, and Dragon Cave, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees.0

The boat excursion offered by Leuca in Barca provides a pleasant one-hour trip in either direction. It is recommended to visit early morning for the best experience. The rocks and caves can be appreciated from the boats, and the boat captain/guide speaks English. The excursion offers an amazing time as visitors get to explore all of the caves and even swim in a dark little cave for 20 minutes. Despite being a short trip, the boat appears clean, tidy, and equipped with necessary facilities.
Nice 1hr boat trip in either direction. Best time to visit early morning. Rocks, caves are best seen from boats. Boat captain / guide speaks English.

Amazing time, I definitely recommend the boat excursion, we went to see all of the caves, and went to swim in a very dark little cave for 20 minutes!!!

Nice atmosphere with a refreshing sea breeze. Great place for an evening walk!

We stayed here aboard our sailboat. Marina staff were friendly and approachable. Not much in terms of facilities (basic toilets and showers). Easy to access the town and walk along coast. Must walk along wooden walkway hugging coastline and up the 300 steps to the church and lighthouse at the top.
Helen H — Google review
Well, it's a tourist port. Don't know why you could be interested in it, anyway it's well done and prepared, organized. The landscape is good, one side Leuca, the other the monumental waterfall with the lighthouse and the Cathedral. Like boats? Go there; like landscapes, sea, swimming and eating? Go around :)
Enrico C — Google review
Go visit the guy and girls at Gnu Diving. Very friendly and helpful. They were excellent with me and my son on our first ever scuba dive, couldn't have been better.
Richard H — Google review
Marina was expensive for what it was. Left much to be desired but it's in key passage making location. The town itself is a delight. Very charming.

Boat tour agency
Leucaduemari, located on the Ionian coast of Santa Maria di Leuca, is a popular destination for exploring stunning rock formations and natural caves. Visitors can embark on a boat trip to discover the breathtaking Dragon's Cave and Lovers' Cave while snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters. Travelers recommend going with experienced guides like Rocco or Captain Stefano, who offer informative tours tailored to their guests' needs.
The tour was amazing! When the weather turned bad Stefano changed the itinerary to find sun and pristine blue water. The highlight was when we spotted an octopus, he went down to the seafloor to grab it for the guests to see it better. Francesco the octopus was released and still lives happily in the waters west of Leuca ;).

An unforgettable experience! The sunset boat tour was absolutely amazing – breathtaking views, a relaxing atmosphere, and the perfect swimming stop. We chose the 3-hour tour and it was exactly what we were hoping for. Our skipper, Mauro Greco, was fantastic – professional, friendly, and very attentive to everyone on board. Thank you, Mauro, and thank you Leucaduemari for such a wonderful memory!Diana, Marius and Carla

It's been a great experience! Thanks to Leucaduemari and the captain Stefano Greco for showing us around and exploring the caves with us. Make sure to enjoy the sunset 😉 We'll hopefully do it again soon

We spent a great afternoon in the only Fiat 500 on water of Puglia ! The boat is great and the organisation really easy with Leuca2mari. All by whatsapp and a very kind team to show us how to enjoy the boat. Even when stop Pong by a cave, another boat from the team help us to stop in the right place. Great expérience ! Thanks
Karine R — Google review
Even though this particular company did not have as many reviews as some other around, we somehow still chose them. And it was the right decision because we had the most wonderful afternoon with the crew and everything was arranged really nicely.
Prianka M — Google review
Great tour with English speaking guide for our group. We all enjoyed ourselves including the children.
Nimesh P — Google review
Very nice experience. We had a boat only for 2 couple for a reasonable price, especially for a 3 h trip. The trip allows you to swim in an astonishing sea and inside caves that look like a natural cristal clear pool. The aperitivo was very nice with very good olives and taralli. Extremely suggested.
Federico Z — Google review
An amazing trip, lead by a great captain. Rocco has been amazing and made sure everything was tailored with our needs. He picked the right spots for us to swim and the beautiful waters on both coasts, away from the team of other boats. The boat size was perfect for us, family of 4, and a young couple. He felt line a private tour. They truly deserve the 5 stars and glowing reviews.

The Santuario di Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae is a stone church dating back to the 18th century, built on the site of an ancient temple overlooking the town and harbor. It stands alongside the famous 157-foot-tall lighthouse and offers stunning views of Marina di Leuca, with its charming coast dotted with oleanders and Art Nouveau villas. The basilica was fortified in the 1700s as protection against Turkish and Saracen assaults.
Beautiful location, great structures, best view to the open sea and town below. Easy parking. Food places. At the end of the heel of Italy. On a sunny day, what a view. Loved the visit. Would love to stay nearby next time around.
G J — Google review
History embedded. Love how simplistic the church is inside without all the extravaganza.
Mouni M — Google review
This Basilica, named "The End of Land" is built at the southernmost tip of the Italian heel, at a place where the Adriatic meets the Ionian sea. The 18c Church with adjacent Monastery is on top of a hill above the town, imo a very average one, both outside and inside. Many souvenir stalls around further ruin the feeling, making it a very touristy place. From the Church terrace is really a great seas view, but that's it - a max 45 min visit including the time for finding parking which is really an issue in August peak season
Dejan B — Google review
Busy but still a sense of tranquility and spiritual calm. Easy to access all area even for the less able bodied. Massive car parking space . Small stall holders selling a wide variety of goods at fairly reasonable prices . Small but busy cafe selling a good selection of pasties and snacks busy but worthwhile. Take your time to unwind here and treat it all as a bit of a pilgrimage at the joining of the two seas?

The place is nice, especially 280 steps to come up from port. There is a wsterfall that is oprated with water from roman acqudotto. (Occasionally)

Punta Ristola Leuca is a stunning rocky outcrop and seafront lookout, marking the southernmost point of Italy's 'heel.' Recently renovated, it offers a breathtaking view of the sea and landscape of Leuca. The area is adorned with impressive sculptures in Lecce stone by artist Mario Calcagnile, including the striking Triptych of Transcendence.
Large free parking place in the street , easy acces by foot , nice place to take photos , no acces to the sea because of the rocks so you need to be very carefully, there is a cave with easy acces that goes down to the sea , no equipment needed, I recommend visiting nearby MUSEO CIVICO DEL CORALLO BIANCO, free entrance

Amazing place. Sooo clean water. Incredibile.
Martin B — Google review
The area is known for its natural beauty and is a popular destination for outdoor activities. The spot is little bit risky, but possible. The spot is worth a visit. Very suggestive and large cave has a rock formation inside which acts as a supporting column of the enormous cliff of the natural "roof" of the cave. There are many boatmen. Continuing the lovers' cave you can swim by entering onto a small beach. Its name derives from its resemblance to the head of a dragon which can be seen when entering the boat on the left wall. The series of caves and ravines leaves you speechless. The cave is so called because the rock inside vaguely resembled the shape of a lying dragon, with its tail on the left and its head on the right. Furthermore. Dragon's Cave, very beautiful like the others to visit on a boat excursion, evaluate carefully and find out about the caves that make you visit .

The Church of Christ the King, situated in the heart of Marina di Leuca near the waterfront, is a splendid illustration of 19th-century architectural style in Lecce carparo. Planned by Pasquale Ruggeri, an engineer renowned for his work on numerous distinguished residences in the region, this church adheres to the principles of Lecce Gothic.

Embark on an unforgettable adventure with the Barca del Porto excursion to the caves of Santa Maria di Leuca, located in the "heel of Italy." This boat trip offers a comprehensive exploration of the stunning coastline, allowing you to navigate both the Ionian and Adriatic Seas. You'll have the opportunity to witness the meeting point of these two seas while discovering various grottos along the way.
From start to finish, it was a wonderful boat excursion with Captain Gaetano. It was a highlight of our trip to Southern Italy. We arrived a little late, yet they were very accommodating and allowed us time to enjoy a meal before the tour. Gaetano translated all descriptions of the grottos and caves into English so we could understand. We were able to see many beautiful and natural caves and the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. We were served drinks and snacks in between swimming in the sea. Unbelievable price for the experience, could not recommend enough!

This was one of the best experiences we had whilst in Italy. Our boat guide Matteo was so friendly and had great knowledge of the area. We had lots of fun and enjoyed our Prosecco treat at the end. Highly recommend this experience. Great value for money.

After reading the reviews, i was expecting another type of boat. That is not a big problem, but a bit distracting. I was on the 3h tour and it felt like a lifetime. It was warm and drinks were given right at the end. A bit late. Unfortunately, the guide was mostly in italian and not english. Sometimes a speaker would some things in english, but not too understandable. Overall, the workers were nice and always keeping an eye on the people and the views were great.

The best boat excursion of Santa Maria di Leuca! Riccardo takes you on a wonderful trip alongside the Adriatic & Ionic parts of the coast. He knows the region very well and gives you all the explanations you need about the caves and views. His boat is intimate and very beautiful. We stopped 3 times for a swim in the crystal clear waters. Would 100% recommend Riccardo for this excursion!!

Morgana Sailing offers an incredibly beautiful experience with its daily sailing excursion, allowing visitors to rent the entire boat exclusively for a more personalized adventure. The team on board is described as reliable, kind, and welcoming. Guests can enjoy delicious cuisine prepared by Lucia while taking in the incredible view of the coves of the Salento sea. The Zoe boat is not only beautiful but also equipped with every comfort for a memorable journey at sea.
I've chartered a private boat in Europe year after year. This one was truly special. It was it our honeymoon and my husband's birthday. Roberto and Enzo were great hosts. They made the day very memorable for us. Both very personable and accommodating. We truly had expert guides who showed us some of the coolest swimming holes and caves. Roberto even climbed into one of the more challenging caves with us (climbing rocks) so we didn't go alone. "Lunch will be prepared onboard" they said upon reservation. Understatement of the year. What a lunch. I'm still fascinated that our Captain Roberto prepared such a wonderful meal on a sailboat. We had birthday cake together, wine, great conversations. Roberto was very knowledgeable on our surroundings and history of the area. We would 100% sail with Morgana again. Truly unique experience after years of doing this with other companies.

The captains were wonderful. We had some great areas to swim in. They cooked for us and it was so delicious. Just a perfect day in Italy.

My wife and I chartered a day-long sail along the beautiful grottoed coast near Leuca. Our two-man crew, Luca and Davide, were not only capable sailors, getting us in close for good looks at a spectacular cathedral-like grotto, but also exceptionally talented chefs and caterers, laying out a first-class seafood feast — including a tuna caught from our boat — that would earn high marks at any restaurant we’ve visited during our trip through Puglia. Throughout the day, they gave us enough attention to feel cared for, but they also left us to enjoy our own privacy in just the right measure as well. With this trip being part of our 25th wedding anniversary celebration, we gained a wonderful and cherished memory for the journey. The back office of Morgana Sailing is equally capable, and their communication and arrangement of the booking and logistics was friendly and professional. If you’re looking for a superb experience to celebrate a special occasion with friends or family, this is your boat ready to sail!

Our family of four stayed on board with Antonio, Roberto and Lucia for 3 days in July as part of driving trip round Pulgia. It was without a doubt the highlight of our holiday, we swam in crystal clear bays, snorkelled in caves, visited cities, ate home made food on the boat and got to know the crew who went out of their way to make us feel comfortable in every way. Would recommend and would definitely return soon!

Fantastic day on Antonio’s sailing boat. Couldn’t recommend the experience more highly. We had the whole boat to ourselves for 7 of our friends and the day was absolutely seamless. Boat comfortably holds 10 people and there is plenty outside space in the sun. The meal was also delicious and stop offs to see the grottos were awesome. Definitely recommended for a day outing in southern puglia

Really recommendable boat rental! Great contact with the rental team via watsaap. I rented boats in several countries and there was always something, here everything is as described, the boat is well-maintained and relatively new, on board you have a fresh water shower, a ladder to go down to the water, a sound system with Bluetooth etc.. Very honest, great solution with fuel, you rent with a full tank and when returning the boat you sail with a rental crew to the station to refuel again to full and you only pay for the fuel that you actually used! As for me, this is a great solution, I really recommend it to have a great time!

According to a popular legend, Punta Meliso is a shepherd who, in ancient times, refused the courtship of a mermaid so as not to betray his beloved. There are gates and barbed wire and a private property. Punta Meliso promontory (the ancient Promontorium lapygium or Sallentinum) is the southeastern extremity of Italy — traditionally considered the lowest point of the geographical "heel" of Italian peninsula, as well as the meeting point of the waters from the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea.

Cascata monumentale Aquedotto Pugliese, located in Santa Maria di Leuca, marks the endpoint of the Apulian aqueduct. Waterfalls
The Monumental Waterfall of Santa Maria di Leuca, located at Punta Meliso, marks the culmination of the Apulian aqueduct and is commemorated by a Roman column. This impressive structure includes a monumental staircase that seamlessly blends into the natural surroundings. Dating back to 1939, this architectural marvel spans over 250 meters with a vertical drop of approximately 120 meters, releasing around 1,000 liters of water per second directly into the sea.
In the famous Santa Maria di Leuca, the extreme edge of Puglia and in particular of Salento, there are still works dating back to the fascist period such as the monumental waterfall at Santa Maria di Leuca. This is the case of the monumental waterfall, an imposing work, finished in 1939; which boasts a length of over 250 meters and a vertical drop of about 120 meters, with a flow rate of 1,000 liters per second that ends directly in the sea. The waterfall represents the last term of an even more sumptuous work, that is that of the Apulian Aqueduct; the greatest infrastructure of water-drinking supply to European level, constructed during the first decades of the twentieth century; consisting of a series of ‘trunks’ thus allowing water supply to over 300 municipalities. Santa Maria di Leuca Perfectly set between the rock and the Mediterranean maquis, its staircase ends with the Roman column, installed by Benito Mussolini. Narrow between two wide flights of stairs that with their 300 steps allow visitors to admire the top; the work is lit only in particular periods that are concentrated especially in the hottest months of the year.

Day 4

Off the beaten path
For day 4, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Percorso Grotta Porcinara. Not quite as popular as Santuario di Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 2 hours.

Located on the seafront of Leuca, Torre dell'Omomorto is a beautiful watchtower dating back to around 1500. Also known as Torre dell'Omo Morto, it gets its name from the discovery of bone remains inside. Although in a semi-degraded state and not open to visitors, it offers a picturesque sight for photos from the street.
Its main function was to spot Turkish ships approaching Salento. The shade of the bridge provides fresh air to refresh the body from a lot of sunbathing. Nearby there are two small restaurant bars and a bridge. This is the only true monument of the place .It owes its name to the discovery of human bone remains inside it. It is also called the old tower . The shade of the bridge provides fresh air to refresh the body from a lot of sunbathing. Atypical and powerful tower, it is classified as a hammer tower due to its defensive fortress characteristics. It has considerable dimensions, the escarpment base has walls almost 5 meters thick and a diameter of approximately 16 metres. Inside this, four troughs opened.

(Translated by Google) Ancient stone watchtower, partly ruined. It owes its name to the discovery of human bone remains inside it. It is also called the old tower, because it was the first tower in Leuca, built in 1500. It cannot be visited, given its structural instability. (Original) Antica torre d'avvistamento in pietra, in parte diroccata. Deve il nome al ritrovamento al suo interno di resti ossei umani. È detta anche torre vecchia, perché fu la prima torre di Leuca, costruita nel 1500. Non è visitabile ,data la sua instabilità strutturale.

(Translated by Google) Watchtower from around 1500 which owes its name to the findings of bone remains inside it. The monument has its own reason, it's a shame that it isn't valorised at all, in fact underneath it, despite the sharp bend on which it stands, there is wild parking in the summer, plus it's left in a state of decay, it's a shame that the municipality doesn't valorise it (Original) Torre di avvistamento del 1500 circa che deve il suo nome a ritrovamenti di resti ossei al suo interno.
