Sigiriya in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Sigiriya, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Sigiriya is best known for its dramatic rock fortress, where a 5th-century royal citadel crowns a sheer stone monolith rising above the plains. Visitors can climb to the summit past ancient frescoes, the famous Mirror Wall, and enormous lion’s paw carvings, then enjoy panoramic views over forests and villages. At the base lie some of South Asia’s oldest landscaped gardens, blending water, boulder, and terraced designs. As part of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, Sigiriya also makes a convenient base for exploring other major heritage sites such as Dambulla and Polonnaruwa.
With favorites like A Village Tour Sigiriya, Sigiri Rock Side Home Stay, and Sigiriya Rock And Archaeological Museum - සීගිරිය Sigiriya, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Sigiriya Wew Thawulla Restaurant and Soul Food so you can get the best taste of Sigiriya while you’re here. If you're looking for a moderate hike and climb with breathtaking panoramic views, Pidurangala Rock is the place to be. Adjacent to the famous Sigiriya Rock, it offers an equally stunning view of its more renowned neighbor from a slightly lower height. With fewer crowds and a historic cave complex of its own, Pidurangala provides an epic 360-degree view of the surrounding valleys and is gaining popularity as a prime spot for catching the sunrise over Sigiriya Rock.
Surprisingly this is the best view of Sigiriya rock, as you are not too far from it and almost in the same height. The view is also panoramic as on the Sigiriya rock, the price is symbolic and there is less queue. Early morning is less crowded, not recommended to go there when it is dark and if you intend to see the sunrise, not all the route is with proper stairs, you will have to coastal over a few big rocks. Make sure to spend enough time on the top as it is really a spectacular experience, the air is fresh, it’s a bit windy and the panoramic view is fulfilling. On the way you will encounter black face monkeys and dogs who will accompany you waiting for some food and water. Bottom line, it is a great way to see the Sigiriya rock, the same panoramic , more cost effective and less crowded!
Yaki T — Google review
We went there for sunrise, started at the bottom around 5.15am but maybe starting a little earlier would even be better. It's a beautiful hike, starting with stairs, but the higher you get the rougher the territory. At the end, you have to climb big rocks, so should be kind of fit and not afraid of free climbing a little bit - still doable for beginners! And the view is fantastic!
Kathrin W — Google review
I was truly amazed by how it blends history, spirituality, and adventure all in one place. It’s more than just a hike — it’s a journey through time, and what makes it unforgettable is the breathtaking view of Sigiriya Rock from the top. 🏯 History and Culture Pidurangala was once an ancient Buddhist monastery dating back to the 1st or 2nd century BC. It became especially important in the 5th century AD when King Kashyapa moved monks here after turning Sigiriya into his royal fortress. Along the way, I came across ancient caves, a stupa, and a massive reclining Buddha statue, all of which added a deep spiritual feel to the climb. 🥾 The Hike Itself The hike took me around 30 minutes — the first half was steps, and the second half involved a bit of bouldering and scrambling to reach the top. It was slightly challenging but definitely fun and rewarding. Since the trail starts inside an active temple, I had to remove my shoes and dress modestly, covering my shoulders and knees. I went early for sunrise, and it turned out to be the highlight of my trip. Watching the golden light touch Sigiriya Rock from Pidurangala’s summit, surrounded by misty forests, was simply magical — a view that stays with you long after you leave. 💰 Why I Recommend It For just 500–1000 LKR ($3–$6), it’s a great value — quieter, cheaper, and less touristy than Sigiriya. Many people say it offers the best view in Sri Lanka, and after seeing it myself, I completely agree. If you have the time, I highly recommend doing both Sigiriya and Pidurangala — one for its rich history and royal ruins, and the other for its stunning natural views and adventurous spirit. Together, they perfectly capture the beauty and depth of Sri Lanka.
Weaning P — Google review
Great morning workout with Pidurangala.Pidurangala is a hidden gem that offers one of the most stunning panoramic views of Sigiriya and the surrounding countryside. The hike is adventurous, with a mix of rocky paths and peaceful forest trails leading to the top. The sunrise and sunset views are absolutely breathtaking, making the climb truly rewarding. It’s less crowded than Sigiriya, giving a more peaceful and natural experience. Pidurangala is perfect for nature lovers and those seeking both adventure and serenity in Sri Lanka.
Lakmal W — Google review
Very nice place, take good shoes, best hike shoes. Do not forget water. We went on sunset, really good but difficult to have the sun and lion rock at the same time. The climb is a bit sporty, "stairs" are non even rocks so more difficult than the climb of lion rock. Beware the monkey’s, do not feed them or you will have the on your back.
Remi L — Google review
Pidurangala Rock Pidurangala is another ancient site of great cultural and spiritual significance. At the base of the rock lies a temple that continues to house monks to this day. The climb rewards visitors with panoramic views, particularly at sunrise, when Sigiriya rock can be seen in all its glory. Along the ascent, one encounters a striking brick statue of Lord Buddha, a testament to the artistry and devotion of the past
GAYAN W — Google review
Visiting Sigiriya Lion Rock was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and having an official tour guide made it even more special. From the moment we arrived, our guide shared fascinating stories about the ancient rock fortress, its history, architecture, and the legends surrounding King Kashyapa. As we climbed step by step, he patiently explained the meaning behind the frescoes, the mirror wall, and the water gardens, allowing us to see beyond the stones and truly understand the culture and heritage of Sri Lanka. What impressed me most was his professionalism and passion. He knew the best viewpoints for photos, managed the time perfectly to avoid crowds, and always ensured we felt safe and comfortable throughout the climb. His storytelling turned the journey into a vivid history lesson filled with life and imagination. Standing at the summit, overlooking the breathtaking 360-degree view, I felt grateful not only for the beauty of Sigiriya but also for the knowledge and hospitality of our guide. This experience was far more enriching than just a sightseeing trip—it was a journey into Sri Lanka’s soul. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Sigiriya!

Pidurangala Royal Cave Temple

4.8
(276)
Buddhist temple
Located just a couple of kilometers north of Sigiriya, the Pidurangala Royal Cave Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple situated on a massive rock outcrop. It is said to have been established when monks from Sigiriya were relocated to make way for the king's palace. The climb to the top offers panoramic views of the surrounding dense Sri Lankan forest and provides a stunning vantage point to see the entire Sigiriya complex.
Entrance: 1000 LRK. There are stairs and lights along most of the way. The last 50-60 meters are a bit rocky, but if you're in reasonably good shape, it’s no problem. The view at the top is stunning, with a large plateau to enjoy. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a perfect sunrise, but it was still a great experience. Bring water and wear proper shoes (sneakers or similar). The only downside? Trash. In Norway, we have a mindset called “leave no trace.” Many here clearly have something to learn. Plastic takes decades to decompose, and honestly, who do you think will clean up after you? The least we can do as responsible tourists and visitors is to leave the mountain as beautiful as we found it. So pack out your trash. Don’t toss it between rocks or leave it lying around like a lazy slob.
Maren E — Google review
Great sunrise hike. Pick up was 5am. Not too challenging, took us about 20-25 mins to reach the top, but you will need some level of fitness. Cost: 1000 ($5 AUD) Clothing: on your way down you can visit the temples, so you will need to cover your shoulders and knees. It's a must do in Sigiriya. 🇦🇺
Julie F — Google review
I was so excited to visit the temple and never expected the journey to be this long. The trail wound steeply through the forest, each step feeling heavier as the climb went on. It was a challenging hike, and by the time we reached the top, we were out of breath and covered in sweat. But the moment we saw the panoramic view — mountains stretching endlessly, the temple standing gracefully against the sky, and even the majestic Sigiriya visible in the far distance — every bit of exhaustion melted away. The view from the top truly did not disappoint.
Chanura D — Google review
Walk up is not a big problem but climb 🧗 up to the rock can be tricky. Windy and scenic views. Morning light will b nice to take a picture with Sigiriya rock 🪨
Yasser N — Google review
Awesome and challenging hike (30m to 1 hr depending on fitness and volume of people. Views are spectacular. Clambering over rocks is tons of fun, but you need to be fit and confident. 1000 rupees for an adult and 500 for kids, much better value than Sigiriya ($35 USD for adults and $20 for kids).
Sam D — Google review
Great place to view Sigariya or the sunset. Nominal fee of 1000 rupees to be paid to the temple at the base. The climb is exacting and difficult, with uneven steps, narrow passages, and manoeuvring through tight spaces, with a few bottle necks that restrict the movement of people. You need to hands free to get through. People with any sort of joint or mobility issues will really struggle to get up. The views are worth the effort if you can get up. There is plenty of space to spread out and do your own thing on the top. There is lighting to help guide you down, but bring a torch if your coming down after sunset. Will be useful if the track lights are out.
Justan K — Google review
If you want the budget view of the Lion Rock in Sigiriya, this is the place to go. The entry was about 1000LKR for 1 foreign adult whereas Lion Rock is about 7000LKR. This helps the maintain the place with lighting and other amenities. There is a toilet near the parking along with some condiment stores for refreshments. There’s a temple at the start of the flight of stairs to the top which will need you to be fully covered near your shoulders and knees. You get a Sarong (large shawl) to use, not sure if you have to rent because I didn’t use it. There are stairs of flight almost until 80% of the way and the rest is pure nature rock climb. You need to be fit and willing to do the rest 20% but the view is definitely worth it. Shoes, water bottle, shades, cap and some energy boosters are definitely recommended. Won’t recommend it during monsoon or rains.
Ashwin V — Google review
This is an most historic and ancient place situated in central province. This place situated nearby sigiriya rock. In central province nearby dambulla city. So if you’re looking for a historic and ancient place to study about old Sri Lankan Buddhism culture and different periods between each kingdoms you have to visit these places. So if you travel through by bus you have to come to dambulla city then take a bus to sigiriya the last stop it’s a end of the destination so you can drop from there and from there you have to hire a private tuk tuk or safari jeep for visit there if you’re hope to go through by walk it’s maybe difficult and dangerous sometimes elephants are walk around the road they maybe hit you. So enjoy the view and historical pride of Sri Lanka Recommend!

Sigiriya Lion Rock

Sigiriya Lion Rock, also known as Sigiriya ancient rock fortress, is a must-visit UNESCO World Heritage site in Sri Lanka. It stands at an impressive 200 meters high and features a challenging climb to the top, taking about half a day to explore. The fortress offers stunning views and is located just a 30-minute drive from Dambulla. Despite the 1200 steps to reach the summit, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking scenery that makes it all worthwhile.
Visiting Sigiriya Lion Rock is an unforgettable experience. The climb can be a bit demanding, but every step is worth it for the breathtaking views and the incredible sense of history. The ancient frescoes, the mirror wall, and the lion’s paw entrance all add a unique charm that makes this site one of the most impressive landmarks in Sri Lanka. From the top, the panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and villages are simply stunning, giving you a true sense of the country’s natural beauty. The site is well preserved, and you can feel the grandeur of what was once a royal palace and fortress. It’s best to go early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds. Take water with you, wear comfortable shoes, and give yourself enough time to explore both the rock and the surrounding gardens. Overall, Sigiriya is a must-see destination — a perfect combination of nature, history, and culture that leaves a lasting impression.

Amazing view on the top and It’s a challenging climb of almost 1km and some sections the climb is very steep.. Proper foot wear is highly recommended as the steps can be slippery and they are also uneven in height. The effort is rewarded with a panoramic view of the surrounding valley but not much else.. The cave entrance to the cave to see the paintings is also worth the effort..
GT T — Google review
It’s quite a trek to the top of the rock, and it’s not for the faint hearted - but if you can persevere, the views and the experience once you get to the top, are definitely worth the knee trembling moments. The actual climb up is around 1200 steps, so can be tough going if you’re not overly fit, take water with you - although there’s a refill station on route. Once you get to the top, it’s absolutely amazing to see this incredible fort that was built 1600 years ago - this is right up there with Machu Picchu (built 600 years ago) but with engineering way before its time!
Anna F — Google review
What a fantastic place. I visited in October so during the off season which was a blessing " absolutely no crowds " The price may seem a little steep but by the time you've experienced it, that'll seem pretty insignificant. The views are amazing both from up ontop and throughout the gardens, even before you enter stop to appreciate the manicured landscape and surrounding moat.
Mr — Google review
Sigiriya Lion Rock is easily one of the most extraordinary places I’ve visited. The moment you enter the site, you’re surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens that were centuries ahead of their time. The climb is a journey in itself—every level reveals something new, from ancient stairways carved into the rock to the world-famous frescoes that still retain their vibrant colors despite being over a thousand years old. The engineering brilliance is unbelievable. As you climb higher, the massive lion’s paws carved into the stone create a sense of awe, hinting at the grandeur this fortress once held. And when you finally reach the top, the view takes your breath away. Looking out over endless greenery and quiet villages feels like stepping back into a forgotten kingdom. Sigiriya is not just a tourist attraction; it’s a cultural treasure that blends history, architecture, art, and nature in the most breathtaking way.

Sigiriya Rock, Sigiriya, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This colossal rock fortress was built by King Kashyapa around the 3rd century AD. From its summit, visitors enjoy breathtaking views, including the nearby Pidurangala rock. Sigiriya is not only a marvel of ancient engineering but also a spectacular vantage point, especially admired for its enchanting sunset views.
GAYAN W — Google review
An amazing place full of history and beauty. The stairs are all well formed which makes the climb easier. Climb it right on sunrise to avoid the heat and crowds and enhance your experience.

Sigiriya Travel Guide & Tips – Exploring the Lion Rock Sigiriya, famously known as the Lion Rock, is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa I, the massive rock fortress served as a royal palace and defensive stronghold. According to historical chronicles, Kashyapa seized the throne from his father and built Sigiriya as a secure and impressive capital to protect himself from rivals. After his death, it became a Buddhist monastery and continued to be a sacred site for centuries. Historical Highlights: The Lion Gate: The entrance to the fortress was once guarded by a colossal lion, of which only the giant paws remain today. The name “Lion Rock” originates from this impressive feature. Frescoes: Sigiriya is famous for its frescoes, depicting beautiful celestial maidens known as “Sigiriya Damsels,” painted with remarkable detail and vibrant colors that have survived over 1,500 years. Mirror Wall: A highly polished wall once reflected the king’s image and contains ancient graffiti, offering insight into the thoughts and culture of visitors from as far back as the 8th century. Water Gardens & Engineering: The surrounding gardens showcase sophisticated hydraulic engineering with symmetrical ponds, fountains, and pools – a marvel of ancient landscape architecture. Summit Palace: At the top, you’ll find the remains of the king’s palace and terraces. The vantage point provided a 360-degree view of the surrounding plains, ideal for defense and surveillance. Travel Tips & Practical Information: Parking: Local car park ~500m; for foreigners ~100m from the main entrance. Opening Hours: 5:00 AM – 6:30 PM (tickets issued until 5:00 PM). Best Times: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat. Bring: Water, comfortable shoes, sun protection, and a camera. Guides: Optional, but beware of scammers offering “easy paths.” Follow official routes. Climbing: Hundreds of steps, some narrow or steep. No wheelchair or alternative transport – it’s all on foot. Pace yourself and enjoy stops along the way. Nearby Attractions: Pidurangala Rock offers another spectacular viewpoint with fewer crowds. Why Visit Sigiriya? Sigiriya is a remarkable combination of history, art, and adventure. Climbing the rock is physically demanding, but every step is a walk through centuries of Sri Lanka’s cultural and architectural genius. From the gardens at its base to the stunning views at the summit, Sigiriya is truly unforgettable.

The Archaeological Museum at Sigiriya is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to delve into the rich history of this iconic site. Included in your ticket price, the museum features an impressive 3-D model of Sigiriya Rock and offers fascinating insights into ancient trading routes that connected Sri Lanka with the rest of the world. Visitors can also explore photographs documenting early excavations led by British archaeologist HCP Bell in the late 19th century.
A very nicely preserved UNESCO World Heritage site. Stairs are very narrow in many of the areas. Therefore, if you struggle with heights or have some sort of health issues, it is best to take your time and go slowly. There are many places to rest along the way. For active individuals that are more fit or just active, you can move freely up to the top, pretty easy climb. I also enjoyed the 1600 year old cave paintings. The staff does not allow photography in the cave. I had a beautiful day with lovely winds. Made for a nice day of hiking around the grounds. Stunning views at the top. It can get a little congested with people on some step areas, and you just have to maneuver carefully. There are all sorts of people making the ascent and descending with caution. There are many narrow paths.

The climb is somewhat difficult for a person of average fitness, but absolutely worth it! The view is breathtaking from the top and the grounds are very well maintained. Please be sure to carry your passport in original.

Sigiriya is one of the most beautiful and historic places in Sri Lanka. The ancient rock fortress, surrounded by gardens and ponds, offers a breathtaking view from the top. The climb can be a bit tiring, but it’s totally worth it once you reach the summit. A must-visit for anyone who loves history, nature, and amazing scenery.

Sigiriya- the Lion Rock is a must-visit destination in Sri Lanka for local and overseas visitors. This is my fourth time with my family; we find lots of improved accessibility every time. This time, many changes have been made to the stairs; they are now easier to climb and descend. In the mid-purified drinking water filters have been installed. This is our first time visiting the museum. I encourage everyone to bring their children there whenever they visit Sigiriya.

Really good experience in Sigiriya. Must visit place in Srilanka. Almost 1200 steps and scary experience even steps of the rock are next level. We were 3 so it took 18000/- LKR as entry tickets for rock and museum. Museum also nice must visit this place. While climbing I recommend to carry water bottle and some snacks to have. One you climb the rock breathtaking views from the top, amazing view loved it. Top of the rock swimming pool also there.

Must do activity around Sigiriya, we came in very early 5Am at opening, very good choice to avoid too many people in the stairs. Quite a lot of climbing but we found it less sporty than the Pidurangala. There are some steel stairs suspending in the void, be careful if you have vertigo. View super nice but also the whole site on top with old pools and palace.
Remi L — Google review
This is the most ancient and fortress city in Sri Lanka. Can see multiple ancient technology and architecture with precise geometric. When you go there you have to visit the museum. There are plenty of things to learn and have awesome artifect.

Was able to ride a bike from my guest house. Highly recommended to bring a bike in so you can ride the path over to the Buddhist Temple nearby and grab lunch on the main drag. Crowds weren’t too bad when I arrived around 8 AM, but upon leaving around 11 o’clock, the crowds going up the rock or getting worse.

My friend and I stayed two nights in hotel sigriya. Staff welcomed us with refreshing drinks, very friendly and attentive. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Washroom was clean, with all the amenities. I loved the peaceful and beautiful green surroundings. The view of the Lion Rock from the pool was spectacular. The manager of the restaurant was very caring, he sent fruit with my friend to the room, when I didn’t go for dinner, was not feeling well, other staff member were also concerned. We felt safe and truly looked after. Only small issue was that at breakfast time I asked the chef three times to make fried egg, otherwise everything was ok. Live music in the evening was good. Very relaxing place. I definitely recommend this hotel.

A good place to stay to spend a day or two in Sigirya to climb Lions Rock and/or Pidurangula and chill by the pool with beautiful view of the rock. Very pleasant hag out areas near bar (often taken by tour groups!) or by the pool. Good selection for breakfast buffet (assuming the tour groups haven’t cleaned them out!). Didn’t have dinner there as ventured out to nearby local restaurants. Nice and friendly staff. Room was pleasant - no view but not really in room much. A/C was very efficient and cool.

We had a wonderful stay in this resort. It's a beautiful hotel with a stunning view of the rock. We were allocated for a nice room with a pool view after a smooth check in. Our room was spacious, clean, quiet, and very comfortable. The elephant bed decoration made with towels was nice. The food (Breakfast & Dinner) is a vast menu, tasty and too much variety worth to pay. Bar with Live music to enjoy & some indoor games for babies. The staff were friendly and providing great hospitality service. Most of them speaks English. They have nicely equipped gym and a spa with professional experienced therapists. There is also a doctor who is very knowledgeable about treatments, and you can receive consultations from him. They provided driver room for free to stay including parking. The hotel reception arranged a jeep for us at a reasonable price for the Kaudulla National Park tour. Thanks front office team for your support. Overall, our stay at Hotel Sigiriya was superb and enjoyable. We will definitely visit again. We can recommend this hotel to anyone who visits the Sigiriya area. Thank you, Team, for the fantastic service.

We loved this place so much that we came back the next evening! The food is authentic Sri Lankan cuisine with huge portions. Everything we tried was delicious, especially the chicken curry and the veggie curry with rice or parata – and the Kotu Roti was incredible! The staff were all extremely polite and friendly. The interior is quite simple and randomly put together, but in a charming and funny way. We’d absolutely recommend this place to anyone!

Very delicious variety of curry dishes are offered. We were able to taste six different types and all of them tasted very delicious. We liked that we received some chili sauce/oil so that we could add spice to our dish ourselves. The staff also took good care of us and was able to fulfill all our extra demands.

Very busy and popular restaurant. Great food. Nice and spicy for once (no where else is spicy). Ordered the chicken curry and rice and got a great selection of curries for just 1800 and also ordered the chicken Kotthu and it was s a huge portion. Also got given the best colourful popadoms for free starters ever I have been thinking about them ever since they were soo yummy like buttery popcorn. Drinks were 800 each.

Soul Food is a popular restaurant in Sri Lanka that offers a variety of vegetarian Asian Western fusion dishes. The place is highly recommended for its great food, relaxed vibes, and awesome view. Customers can enjoy delicious meals such as jackfruit burger, mushroom wrap, nourish bowl, and smoothie bowl while taking in the beautiful scenery of Sigiriya Rock. The restaurant also provides vegan options and does not charge extra for coconut milk.
A Soulful Experience at Soul Food, Sigiriya! Had an unforgettable lunch at Soul Food in Sigiriya! The view from their backyard is absolutely breathtaking—with the majestic Sigiriya Lion Rock right in front of you, it’s a feast for both the eyes and the soul. Tried the Coco Smoothie Bowl—refreshing, rich, and the perfect tropical treat. The Jackfruit Burger was surprisingly juicy and packed with flavor, and the Sweet Potato Chips? Absolute perfection—crispy, lightly salted, and addictive. The ambiance is peaceful, earthy, and welcoming—a true heaven for vegetarians and anyone looking for clean, soulful food. Highly recommended if you're in Sigiriya and want to nourish your body and spirit!😇❤️🧬

After our early morning hike to watch the sunrise, we stopped by Food Soul, a charming little spot surrounded by nature. There’s a peaceful pond right in front and incredible views of the rice fields — and best of all, a clear and stunning view of Lion Rock in the distance. The service was excellent — very kind and attentive. The food, while quite raw, was still tasty and nicely presented. But what truly makes this place special is the peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking scenery. A highly recommended stop if you want to relax and take in the beauty of Lion Rock and the surrounding landscape.

I stopped here for a fresh mango juice and it was just perfect – sweet, refreshing, and exactly what I needed. What made the experience even better was the beautiful view. Hidden gem with the best view of Sigiriya! Soul Food Café is an absolute must-visit if you're in Sigiriya! The view of the rock fortress from the café is breathtaking, and the overall vibe is so calm and welcoming. Their unique all-vegetarian menu truly stands out — creative, flavorful, and made with love. We tried the jackfruit burger, soya wrap, and the passion kithul tickle drink for lunch — and every bite was mouth-watering. It’s rare to find a place where every item on the menu surprises and satisfies. Trust me, it will never disappoint you! Can’t wait to go back and try more! 💚🌿

Recently, a few of us stopped by Soul Food, a vegetarian restaurant, to grab a meal before a long drive. There were six of us, and they had no problem setting up a large table for us. The menu was pretty extensive. I ordered a Sweet Potato Burger and an Avocado Toast with Egg, plus an Iced Cappuccino and Mango Juice. Overall, the food was really good, but there were a couple of things that could be improved. The wait time was pretty long—probably because we were a group of six, and they wanted to bring everything out at the same time. That’s exactly what happened—they served each dish one by one, and in total, it took about 30-40 minutes to get all the food. It wasn’t a huge issue since we weren’t in a rush, but it would’ve been nice if they had given us a heads-up. The second thing I’d suggest as an improvement is adding fans. We sat outside, and it was really hot. I’ve been to plenty of cafes where they have ceiling fans or stand-alone fans, and it makes a huge difference. Without them, it felt stuffy, and we kept wishing for a bit of a breeze. Overall, great food, but a couple of small changes could make the experience even better!
Filipp N — Google review
The view and the food are as good as the photos show! We had the jackfruit and sweet potato burgers and they were delicious. We also asked for our son to have just avocado on toast and they must have used three fresh avocados to make it. Enormous! The drinks and atmosphere were also good and a short five minute walk from Sigiriya Village hotels.

Lodge
Back of Beyond - Jungle Hideaway in Pidurangala is an eco-friendly retreat nestled in the lush foothills, offering rustic accommodations and a complimentary breakfast. The property features six tents with bathrooms, as well as treehouses and jungle cottages for a unique stay experience. Guests can enjoy swimming in freshwater streams, dining under the stars, and waking up to the sounds of nature.
Back of Beyond is a little piece of heaven. The staff is absolutely wonderful (among them the naturalist Induwara, who is not only incredibly nice, but also clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about nature). The treehouse is very well equipped, and it offers the most unique experience: a full immersion in the jungle. Bonus: the food was delicious. We really appreciated the way everything is organized around respecting the environment at Back of Beyond, and we loved all the proposed activities, such as loris spotting and safari, where we had fun and learned a lot. Very, very highly recommend!

We spent three nights in a treehouse at Back of Beyond and it was truly unforgettable. The place is beautifully cared for and clean, with an atmosphere that feels both peaceful and deeply connected to nature. The staff are incredibly kind and genuinely go out of their way to make your stay special. With their knowledge and local connections, they’re always ready to give the right tips or offer help whenever you need it. The location is perfect – surrounded by nature yet just a short tuk tuk ride from town. We loved the eco-friendly approach and the way they care about the environment, which made our stay feel even more meaningful. If you’re looking for the ultimate place to relax, unwind, and reconnect with nature, this is it. We left completely recharged and satisfied. A very big thank you to Thusitha for arranging so much for us, and also to Wasanth for the care during our stay. You both made our time at Back of Beyond truly special.

An absolutely amazing stay! A beautiful experience sleeping in the middle of the jungle while still being so close to Sigiriya and Lion’s Rock. As soon as we arrived, a wild monkey was hanging around our room – a perfect reminder that we were truly surrounded by nature! 😄 The food was delicious, authentic, and full of local flavors. The staff were incredibly kind, helpful, and always smiling. They also offer many activities, including safaris — we joined one and saw an incredible number of elephants roaming freely in the wild. A peaceful, unique, and unforgettable experience that we 100% recommend!

This place is incredible! The pictures don’t do the hotel justice. You must stay here, food throughout our stay was fresh and tasty, western style as well as Sri Lankan style. And don’t forget to book a Lorris tour, night time walking through the jungle was amazing! I’d give more starts if I could. P.s, bring an eye shade to help with sleeping, the ASMR of jungle sounds will make sure you sleep right through ❤️😊

Although we didn’t stay at this accommodation, we had an unforgettable experience thanks to the incredibly kind and helpful staff. When we needed assistance with an injury, they went above and beyond to help us, showing true care and professionalism. Their warmth and willingness to assist left a lasting impression. The atmosphere is described as cool, fun, and laid-back, complemented by reggae music and colorful decor. Visitors praise the friendly service and welcoming staff who speak excellent English.
We were in Sigiriya today and saw Rastarant and gave it a try. We were astonished at how good it was. The staff were incredible, so welcoming and busy. We were served immediately (even though it was a busy). We had the wood fired offer, ablbd it was incredible. Hugely generous serving, cooked very well. Great range of drinks available, juices, lassies and mocktails on one hand, cocktails, spirits, wine and beer on the other. Ambiance was brilliant too with reggae music, cricket on the big screen and games to keep everyone entertained. Plenty for the children as well, just don’t let them read the cocktail menu. Very funny but not for little people!

Ummm wow love this place so much and wish I was staying longer so I could eat there again!! The service was sooo friendly I had a great chat to one of the staff. The chicken wrap with fresh potato was delicious!!!! I don’t know what they did to the potatoes in particular but they were divine! It is the cutest restaurant with so many cool places to sit and eat your food as well as volleyball next door and a rope swing! I would recommend this to everyone to check out. Great place to hang out in Sigiriya for a drink or a meal. Prices fair for the area, good value place to hang out in the evening. Gets pretty busy and a good social vibe. Nice natural setting. The reggae here is a bit unusual and feels a bit ai, why not play real reggae? Food can be fairly average but big portions.

Il Frangipane is a hotel located in Sigiriya which has an outdoor swimming pool, restaurant and free private parking. The rooms are spacious and have a good rate for breakfast.
One of the nicest places we stayed during our trip—spacious, clean rooms and incredibly friendly staff. The location was beautiful and felt a bit like paradise. A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Sigiriya Il Frangipane is a truly beautiful hotel — an oasis of peace right in the center of Sigiriya. Despite its central location, the atmosphere is incredibly calm and relaxing. The rooms are spacious, tastefully decorated, and very comfortable. One of the highlights is the lovely swimming pool, perfect for cooling off after a day of exploring. What really sets this place apart, though, is the staff. Everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful, always ready with great tips on what to do in the area and where to eat. Their warm hospitality made our stay even more enjoyable. I would absolutely recommend Il Frangipane to anyone visiting Sigiriya. It’s a perfect blend of comfort, convenience, and tranquility.

We couldn’t be happier with our choice to stay here. The staff are incredibly friendly, always eager to help improve your stay and suggest things to do. Even if you already have a plan, it’s worth chatting with them—they might suggest tweaks that make your itinerary even better. For example, we weren’t sure about doing an elephant safari because we didn’t want to stress the animals. The staff recommended a guide they knew, which turned out to be cheaper than booking online. More importantly, we felt the guide respected the animals—you even have the freedom to say “please don’t go there” if you feel the elephants are being disturbed. That gave us real peace of mind. The breakfast is amazing—fresh fruits, juices, toast, pancakes, teas, and pastries. The pool area is surrounded by nature, giving it a very relaxing vibe. We stayed in an upper-floor room, which was spacious with great views over the pool. Just a note: if you’re a light sleeper, you might prefer a lower-floor room. On the top floor, you’ll sometimes hear monkeys running on the roof or rain pouring down heavily. Personally, I loved this as part of the Sri Lankan experience, but some might find it disruptive. A few suggestions: - Some towels had stains (though they were clean)—maybe time for replacements. - A pool umbrella would be great since shade doesn’t reach all the beds. - Think about ways to reduce plastic use, especially water bottles (perhaps refill stations). - Breakfast portions are very generous, but it might help to share the menu with guests first so there’s less food waste. They are currently expanding with two new rooms, so expect a little construction noise for the next couple of months. It didn’t bother us much. Overall, I truly loved this place. The owner should be very proud of such a wonderful and caring team. Highly recommended and I already miss it 🥲🤗

One of my favourite places on our journey through Sri Lanka so far. Ideal location for seeing the main sights of Sigiriya and if you're travelling through on public buses, it couldn't be any easier to get to. Nestled in the lush greenery of Sigiriya, Sigiri Rock Side Home Stay is a delightful retreat for travelers seeking tranquility and comfort at an affordable price. This charming homestay boasts a prime location, just a short distance from popular attractions like Sigiriya and Pidurangala rock, as well as various dining options. The warm hospitality of the owners truly sets this place apart; they go above and beyond to ensure guests have an enjoyable experience.
Very simple and basic rooms, they have AC and a fridge /kettle for tee and coffee. However, the traditional breakfast is superb, heaps of food and all is prepared by the ladies in the back. Also, the whole family is super nice and welcoming, we did a Safari tour and chocking class with them, that was one of the best experiences during our whole trip. Thanks so much!

The place is a little scary to walk around at night. It's about a 5 minute walk from the main road. However, it's a good place to go to Lion Rock. They also make good breakfast. I think it's the best among the guesthouses in SriLanka!

Everything here is amazing. Room is spacious, there is parking on-site, and is located a short walk away from the main street of Sigiriya. Breakfast is amazing and was one of the highlights! I also had to check-in really late, and the homestay owner was very accommodating to the request. We also booked a safari jeep tour (organised by the homestay) and we saw many elephants (around 60) that afternoon!

This is a great homestay place to stay. The rooms are very comfortable, in the garden and have a balcony to sit out relax and take in the bird song (giant squirrels gave an aerobatic exhibition at one time also). The breakfast is extensive and very tasty. Access is at night is by car or tuc tuc only- the 200m lane off the main road has elephant traffic so it's dangerous to walk after dark. Priyanti and Manike are great hosts and took us free of charge to Pandaragula and Sigiriya rock for sunrise hikes.

Amazing homestay, located conveniently in Sigiriya. The owners are extremely hospitable and make an amazing breakfast! He was extremely helpful and even took us to the Sigi Rock at 4:30 in the morning.

The room was clean, the nature around were beautiful and green and the breakfast was excellent. The staff was very friendly. Thank you!🌴❤️

This is the best located homestay in Sigiriya, just a few hundred metres from the UNESCO World Heritage site. The rooms don't have airconditioning but are not bad in the night. The owner stays on the property and serves an authentic Sri Lankan breakfast. The Sigiriya market is closeby, where you can go for dinner. We had it in Barista, simply because we wanted to have a light meal and rest as we had a long day, driving from Colombo. There is a need for a plumbing job in the bathroom but I would recommend this place.

Lion's Paw

4.7
(97)
Historical landmark
Lion's Paw Terrace is a restaurant located in a picturesque setting with a stunning view of the iconic Sigiriya rock fortress. The ambiance is captivating, overlooking lush greenery and the majestic Sigiriya rock, providing an unforgettable dining experience. However, visiting during peak times like holidays may result in long lines and crowds, making it challenging to explore fully. Despite the crowds, reaching the top offers breathtaking views that make the climb worth it.
The mirror wall stairway leads up to the ruins of the Sigiriya lion’s paws sculpture. The name “Sigiriya Lion Rock” comes from this royal palace entrance. The original entrance was through a massive brick sculpture of a lion head. Only the paws of this sculpture remain at the foot of the rock today. A rare Sigiriya mirror wall poem describes how imposing the lion sculpture was at the time of his visit (Sometime between the sixth to thirteenth centuries). The stairway that leads to the top of Sigiriya rock starts from where the lion statue’s mouth would have been.
Prasad L — Google review
The Lion’s Paw is one of the most iconic and breathtaking features of Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Located near the final stretch of the climb, this monumental stone structure was once part of a massive lion-shaped gateway that led to the king’s palace at the summit. Today, only the colossal paws remain, but they are still awe-inspiring in scale and detail. Standing in front of them, you can imagine how grand the full lion structure must have looked centuries ago. The paws are beautifully carved out of rock, giving visitors a sense of the incredible craftsmanship and ambition of King Kashyapa’s builders. This spot also serves as a natural resting point before the steep climb to the very top of Sigiriya. Many visitors pause here to catch their breath, take photos, and soak in the view of the rock rising above and the plains stretching below. Climbing the narrow stairway between the lion’s paws feels both thrilling and symbolic—as if you’re entering the lion itself, just as people did during the height of Sigiriya’s glory. It is one of the most memorable and photographed parts of the fortress, and for many, it’s the highlight of the visit. Overall, the Lion’s Paw is not just an architectural marvel but also a gateway that connects you to the mystery and grandeur of ancient Sri Lanka. It’s a place where history, art, and imagination come alive, making it one of the must-see landmarks within Sigiriya.
Vishal S — Google review
The staircase to the Lion's Rock starts from here. A bit steep stairs and no place to rest until you reach to the top. Avoid weekends and holidays. The stairs will be overcrowded and the crowd will move very slowly. Be aware of the rain. There is no place to cover from the rain if you're on top of the rock. Also be silent as much as possible since there are wasps.
TD — Google review
Much needed stop about halfway up the 1,200 steps to the top of the rock. A water station with filtered water here to top up water bottles if needed and some shade for a rest. Lions paw looking very impressive carved out of the rock, amazing to think how they did it so long ago
Jamie P — Google review
This is one of the amazing places I visited in Sri lanka - during our trip. It looked quite difficult. But it was a memorable experience. But we happened to be there during the Vesak festival holiday - long weekend (6 May). So the local crowd was too much, unmanageable and uncontrollable. There were long lines and we took close to two hours just to reach the top - due to the rush. We couldn't see the cave paintings as it got closed before we could come back down. Too much rush. The staff was unable to manage the crowd. Avoid this place on national holidays as it gets over crowded.
Ulka P — Google review
Lion’s Paw is the grand entrance to the Sigiriya Rock, and these two beautiful lion paws truly show the pride of Sigiriya to the world. This is also the last place where you can fill your water bottles, as there is filtered water available from a nearby water treatment plant donated by the Indian government. It’s a perfect spot to drink some fresh water, enjoy a quick snack, and rest for a few minutes before continuing your climb. From here, the adventure begins, you climb through staircases made of rocks, bricks, and iron. The path itself feels historic and adventurous. If you get tired on the way, there are a few tiny resting spots before reaching the top, where the breathtaking views will make every step worth it. This is one of the most memorable parts of the Sigiriya experience, and I highly recommend taking a moment to enjoy Lion’s Paw before starting your climb! 🦁✨
Nadeera T — Google review
1200 steps, comparatively easy for people who are active, super hard for people who are not. Be prepared and dont lose hope. Its worth it.
Rayaa B — Google review
From this point onwards starts the final clink l climb up to the top and you can reach the top without having to rest since anyway due to steepness of the stairs from this location onwards, crowd moves quite slowly. This is a place where you should take a photograph to remember the place. Also this resembles the cartoon thunder cats since that had an entrance similar to a lions paw.

A+ Village Tour Sigiriya

3.8
(97)
Tour operator
The A+ village tour in Sigiriya offers a delightful cycling experience through the countryside trails, providing an opportunity to observe nature and witness authentic agrarian and village life. The tour includes a visit to the Rock Fortress to explore its ruins and features. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a catamaran ride, observing birds and admiring the natural beauty of the surroundings. The tour also offers an authentic Sri Lankan food experience, with friendly locals treating guests like family members.
This is 100% aimed at foreign tourists, but it was nice to see rural life and learn to prepare some traditional foods. We got to try grating fresh coconut, making a curry, separating rice from its husk, and plaiting leaves to make roofing materials. The ladies who showed us were patient and clear with their explanations. The lunch was delicious.
Jessica E — Google review
I went with their village tour twice. Once with a group of friends and secondly with family. Family enjoyed this whole tour . It consists of a bullock cart ride , followed by a ride in a tractor, then boat tour in the lake. Boatmen will drop you off at a hut for lunch and to demonstrate local food cooking techniques. Followed by a tuk-tuk ride to starting point as last activity. Food prepared for us by the local lady was delicious and all family liked it a lot. Recommend to take this with A+
Uditha S — Google review
We were taken here by our guide even though we expressed we weren’t really interested in doing this excursion. We especially didn’t want to do the village tour and the home-made lunch as we don’t find this type of activity really that genuine and we always seem to get diarrhoea afterwards… Since we were already there, we asked to only do the boat tour. They eventually accepted it, and took us to the lake by Tuk-Tuk (at least they gave the cows a break, we didn’t want to participate in animal abuse neither). The way there is terrible and the lake boat was enjoyable enough, but you almost see no wildlife and it’s not really worth it in my opinion. The boat man then makes you a necklace from a flower (that part was nice, but of course he expects a tip then). The worst thing was the price, that seemed decided on the spot between the guys over there: 15 000 rupees for 2 persons. Skip it and enjoy your hotel facilities after or before your Sirigiya visit to the Lion Rock.

This tour starts with an oxen/cow pulled cart ride.. seems a little hokey and a bit contrived but stick with it people.. honestly best tour ever! The catamaran is fun and the cooking/village life tour is very very good culminating in the best Sri Lankan meal! All naturally made. This is a must do tour. Highly recommended and excellent value! Take the time… guaranteed you will enjoy.

Great experiencing the village life of Sigiriya. A bullock ride, short tuk tuk to the boat ride on the river, then was made to feel very welcome in the traditional house, where we had cooking lessons and sampled some of the dishes. All in all, it's a very good tour.

Buddhist Temple - Sigiriya is a serene and culturally rich site located near the local car park of Sigiriya. The area is well-maintained and free from polythene, offering a peaceful environment for visitors to explore. With its tall Buddha statue and around 100 other statues, the temple provides insight into the history of King Kasiyappa and the Buddhist culture. Despite being relatively unknown to many locals, it's highly recommended for those in the area.
Cost about 60p to enter we just wanted a good photo. Zero tourists or people. Could be a tourist hotspot if they cleaned it up abit as it’s quite impressive

Not far from the ancient fortress of Sigiriya and not nearly as well known although the giant statue of the Buddha can be seen from the top of the fortress. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area and generally it isn't too crowded.

The food here was absolutely delicious, generous servings for Sri Lanka. They made us a delicious garlic roti which wasn’t on the menu but they were happy to help. We were able to sit on the balcony and watch the world go by. Would definitely visit here if visiting Sigiriya

A fiery feast before (or after) conquering the Lion Rock! We braved the legendary Tom Yum Kun – spicy enough to wake the Buddha, but oh so worth it! Bold, fragrant, and unapologetically hot – I’d recommend it even if your tongue does a little dance. Then came the Chicken Roti – more of a hearty meal than a snack. Packed with generous chunks of meat and veg, it’s the sort of dish that makes you question whether climbing Sigiriya after lunch was really such a clever idea. You might need a touch of patience – good things do take time here – but the coffee is proper, the service is genuinely warm, and the whole vibe? Lovely. All in all: a top spot to refuel – body and spirit – with flavour, charm, and a dash of chilli-induced euphoria.

We had an absolutely wonderful dinner at this hotel in Sigiriya! From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The food was delicious, beautifully presented, and very reasonably priced considering the excellent quality and service. A special mention to David: his service was truly exceptional! He’s one of the most genuine, attentive, and kind people we’ve ever met. He went above and beyond to make our evening memorable, and his professionalism really stood out. What impressed us most was that, despite having many foreign guests, the staff treated local guests with the same warmth and respect. That level of hospitality is truly commendable and made us feel genuinely valued. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, great food, great atmosphere, and wonderful people. Highly recommended to anyone visiting Sigiriya!

Nic D — Google review
Found this spot on Google and decided to pop in. SADLY the owners don't think Google reviews are important and don't believe Google helps drive customers to them 🤦🏾‍♀️. The place was empty and the owner welcomed us. We knew the menu was catering to foreigners but didn't mind that items were priced higher given that it's a tourist destination. Food took an hour and we knew that the husband-wife duo were making things from scratch for the 6 of us. So we played UNO while we waited (we carry our own cards). Food was ok. It was fun for the kids to see paratha stuffed with honey and banana. The rotis were all made well. The egg Biryani was very basic. The curry was good. The challenge for us came towards the end when we were chatting with the owners and asked for a bill. We were told that no one has ever asked for a receipt and that they don't provide bills. That they just show the final amount in their calculator and everyone accepts it. We insisted on a written receipt and they kept making faces and rolling their eyes at our request. We're a group of two locals, two kids and two foreigners (all one family). We were told that they don't accept locals and only cater to foreigners because locals are usually bothering the foreigners🤷🏾‍♀️. We told them that not all locals are like that and that their price point would have deterred shady people from coming in anyways😂. Overall it was a fun lunch but the owners are a bit shady and put us off from returning or recommending them.

Our local driver recommended us to have lunch here as he thinks it’s a great place. Ahinsa didn’t let him down. We had the most delicious meal there, all local, very good price and excellent service. We went with our son who is not that keen on very spicy food and he had what he said was the best Kottu - now it’s his favourite food and keeps asking for it. But that first one is the most memorable. Highly recommend this place to anyone
