Nestled in the heart of Kandy, Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, stands as a beacon of spiritual significance and cultural heritage. This magnificent temple is revered by Buddhists worldwide for housing one of Buddhism's most sacred treasures—the canine tooth of Buddha. According to legend, this relic was smuggled from India on a princess's hair after Buddha’s cremation in 483 BC.
The Dalada Maligawa is truly a sacred and peaceful place filled with history and spiritual beauty. The atmosphere is calm and respectful, and the architecture is breathtaking. A must-visit in Kandy to experience Sri Lanka’s deep culture and devotion. Absolutely five stars! 🌸🙏

Place has much more local relevance if you deep dive into history. Great connection with India and how the tooth was brought. Extremely clean and do explore the museums inside because most people skip that. It’s a bit pricey for the location but I guess it all goes into maintenance so worth it.
Amit S — Google review
The Visit to this really shrine is more than a temple. It is very nice to know the history. And also to know how the tooth reached from the Kalinga kingdom to Sri Lanka through ambassadors, the whole place, is laid out very well and very systematically. You have to go through buying the tickets. Handing over your footwear, ensuring the correct dress code is followed. And then The Visit inside the cascade is not seen by us. But the room where it is kept was seen also different offerings of Lars, fruits were kept in front of the room. A lot of footfalls appear to be happening there. And it's a very sacred experience to go through this shrine. It is much more than a temple. And definitely memorable visit. In kandy

The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is breathtaking! 🏯✨ This sacred Buddhist site is stunning, with intricate carvings and golden embellishments. The atmosphere's serene, and the devotees' devotion is palpable. You can feel the history and significance. Be sure to dress modestly and respect the rules. The temple's a treasure trove of Sri Lankan culture and heritage. Take your time exploring, and soak up the peaceful vibes. A must-visit when in Kandy! 🙏✨ The views of the surrounding area are lovely too. Worth a visit for the history, architecture, and spirituality.

A lovely temple for the Buddhists that is extremely sacred because of the tooth that was recovered from the pure of lord Buddha. That tooth has been preserved here and is worshipped as a part of the lord himself. The tooth bears huge significance for being equivalent to Lord Buddha or as the last remains of him. You must leave your shoes and enter the temple with flowers that can be offered inside. There are two floors, ground and first wherein the chanting and prayer happens. If you get time, you must sit and take in the full experience. There's a museum as well to visit. I would recommend this place to everyone visiting Kandy.
Nyesha S — Google review
Kandy temple is one of the oldest and has huge historicsl anf spiritual significance especially for Buddhism. Its located just next to the Kandy lake and is a large complex. However, for foreigners, they charge LKR 2000 per adults which we found to be really absurd, given that its a temple. Since we have visited Ladakh, Sikkim, Bhutan and Thailand, where we have seen and heard vast history of Buddhism, we did not buy the tickts and just enjoyed the complex. One can opt for a guide if required. Since its a religious place, we must respect the sanctity and visit to pray.
Nikesh M — Google review
Also known as the Temple of the Tooth it is probably fair to say that this is the principal Buddhist shrine in Sri Lanka and a major tourist draw for the city of Kandy. There is nearly always a fairly large crowd of devotees and tourists at the temple, both day and night. The police can be quite forceful in imposing "decency standards" for female visitors ie no bare shoulders or short skirts so it is best to be aware of this before visiting. There are signs in the interior restricting photography but these don't seem to be enforced with the same enthusiasm.

Kandy Lake is a serene, manmade oasis nestled in the heart of Kandy, perfect for leisurely strolls and invigorating jogs along its scenic pathways. This picturesque lake is complemented by the nearby Temple of the Tooth, a significant cultural site dating back to 1687 that once formed part of the royal palace. Despite suffering damage from a bomb attack in 1998, which unveiled stunning 18th-century murals depicting Buddha's past lives, the temple remains an architectural marvel.
A serene lake which is a major attraction & situated in the heart of Kandy. The scenic views alongside, the temple of Tooth Relic on another & mirror reflection of mountains surrounded by makes the walk around this lake a memorable one. Its indeed another incredible experience to view the Kandy perahera(the temple festival) in which the tooth relic are carried on elephant back around the city like a procession.

Kandy Lake is a beautiful spot with a very calming atmosphere. I visited in the morning hours, and it was peaceful and quiet—perfect for a relaxing walk or just to sit and enjoy the view. The surroundings are clean and well-maintained, making it a great place to unwind in the heart of the city.

One of the must see places to visit in Kandy . The lake gives the unique vibe to this ancient city. Nice place to spend time on evening with relaxed atmosphere. Much cleaner compared with other lakes.
Aruna M — Google review
The lake is peaceful and calm. There are lots of birds, swans, water animals and fishes in the lake. The walk was quite intense in the heart but nothing too bad. We were able to stroll around the lake in an hour. There is also Joy's Motorboat service if you're interested in taking a boat ride. The lake is situated right bang at Kandy City Centre and Kandy Multiplex, so there's traffic all around the clock. Evenings are peaceful at the lake. Lots of stuff to try out and eat at the lake but be careful while trying food from local street vendors. There are many other fast food joints like Pizza Hut at a stone's throw away. The water is a bit polluted at the ends but nothing too bad. There's also a Queen's bath building at the lake and it was used as a pool during older days. The archaeological team explains the history once you enter the building and you can even watch a more detailed video at an additional cost. The lake is overall a good visit for a peaceful stroll during the evenings or at night

Kandy Lake, also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the heart of Kandy, Sri Lanka. Built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the lake adds a serene charm to the bustling city. Surrounded by a shaded walking path, it offers a peaceful retreat for locals and visitors alike. The lake is beautifully maintained, and the small island at its center adds to its mystique. Legend says the king used it as a personal garden. Along the walkway, you’ll find benches where you can sit and admire the scenic beauty, while spotting birds, fish, and even occasional water monitors. Kandy Lake is located right next to the famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, making it a central point for tourists. Early mornings and late evenings are the best times to visit, as the cool air and soft light create a magical atmosphere. Despite being in the middle of a busy city, the lake feels calm and timeless. It’s an ideal place for a leisurely stroll, quiet reflection, or simply to enjoy nature. Whether you’re exploring Kandy’s cultural treasures or just looking for a peaceful spot, Kandy Lake is definitely worth a visit.

Kandy Lake is one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots in the city, right at the heart of Kandy. Surrounded by lush greenery and traditional Kandyan charm, the lake offers a perfect escape from the busy streets. A leisurely walk along the shaded pathways around the lake is calming, with benches along the way where you can sit, relax, and enjoy the view. The lake is also deeply connected to the city’s culture and history, located just next to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The reflection of the temple and surrounding hills on the water, especially during sunrise or sunset, is breathtaking. You’ll also spot birds, fish, and sometimes even turtles, which add to the charm of the place. What I loved most was how the lake feels like the city’s soul—always lively with people walking, couples spending quiet time, and tourists capturing the scenery, yet still maintaining a peaceful atmosphere. In the evenings, the cool breeze and golden light make it an especially magical experience. Overall, Kandy Lake is not just a landmark, but a serene experience that should not be missed. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, photography opportunities, or a quiet moment to take in Kandy’s beauty, this lake will leave you with lasting memories.

Kandy Lake (Sinhala: නුවර වැව), also known as Kiri Muhuda (Sinhala: කිරි මුහුද) or the Sea of Milk, is an artificial lake in the heart of the hill city of Kandy, Sri Lanka, was built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe next to the Temple of the Tooth. Over the years, it was reduced in size. It is a protected lake, with fishing banned. It was converted to a lake by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinha in 1807. As there had been a pond named Kiri-muhuda (a "sea of milk") in the middle of the Tigolwela, the lake constructed subsequently too was named Kiri-muhuda. Deveda Moolacharya is considered the architect of the Kandy Lake. The king first built a dam across the paddy fields, starting from the Paththirippuwa (octagon) side, where the steps leading into the lake by the Mahamaluwa (Esplanade) are still visible, stretching across to the Poya-maluwa. The dam, upon which a roadway was constructed, allowed the king to go across to the Malwatte Vihare. According to D’Oyley, the dam was constructed between 1810 and 1812. There are numerous local legends and folklore regarding the lake. One such is that the small island at its centre was used by the king's harem for bathing and was connected to the palace by a secret tunnel. The extent of Kandy Lake is 6,544 sq. meters. The circumference is 3.21 km. The greatest depth is 18.5 meters. The parapet wall, giving the appearance of a cloud, is popularly called Walakulu Bemma and measures 633.82 meters. Diyathilaka Mandapaya Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe built a dam for the purpose of reaching the opposite side of the lake. The king removed the soil from both the palace end and the Malwatte Vihare end, leaving an island behind. At first, this island was used as the Royal Summer House for the Queen and the ladies of the court to relax. The British later used it as an ammunition store and added a fortress-style parapet around its perimeter. Walakula Bamma The lake is surrounded by a wall called Walakulu Bamma (Sinhala: වළාකුළු බැම්ම) or Clouds Wall, which was built to increase the beauty of the Kandy Lake. It extends around half of the lake and took one skilled architect to build it. Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe was unable to complete the wall before the city was captured by the British and he was forced to relinquish the Kandian kingdom. The Walakulu Bamma still lies unfinished. The triangular-shaped holes in the wall were used in the past for lighting oil lamps on festival days. Ulpange Ulpange or Queens Bathing Pavilion is situated partly in the waters of the Kandy Lake. The wives and concubines of Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe used the pavilion when bathing in the lake. After the British captured the city they added another storey and used the building as a library. It is currently used as a police post.

Kandy Lake is absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Right in the heart of the city, it offers a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle. The path around the lake is flat and easy to walk—about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace—making it a great way to soak in some nature without much effort. One of the most fascinating things about the lake is how much wildlife you can spot. We saw monkeys swinging through the trees, huge water monitors (honestly, some of the biggest I’ve ever seen—even bigger than the ones in Thailand!), and all kinds of birds. We spotted pelicans, kingfishers, herons, and this time of year (June), there were tons of baby birds in nests—so sweet to see. One heads-up though: there are large bats (flying foxes) hanging in the trees around the lake. They’re impressive to see, but fair warning—they do poop, and it might land on you if you’re not paying attention, so maybe don’t linger directly under the trees too long! The lake itself was created in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last king of Sri Lanka, and it’s still a central part of life in Kandy. Right next to it is the famous Temple of the Tooth, so it’s easy to combine the walk with a visit to one of the country’s most important cultural sites. Overall, Kandy Lake is a great spot to relax, take photos, and enjoy Sri Lanka’s rich mix of nature and history. Just keep an eye on the sky!

Shopping mall
Kandy City Centre is a modern indoor mall spread across three levels, featuring a variety of brand-name stores, a food court, and a children's play area. It is one of the largest markets in Kandy, offering high-end brands in clothing, shoes, cosmetics, and jewelry. Additionally, it houses restaurants and recreational areas for children. Tourists often visit this popular spot to purchase souvenirs before leaving Sri Lanka.
Kandy is a large city in central Sri Lanka. It's set on a plateau surrounded by mountains, which are home to tea plantations and biodiverse rainforest. The city's heart is scenic Kandy Lake (Bogambara Lake), which is popular for strolling. Kandy is famed for sacred Buddhist sites, including the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) shrine, celebrated with the grand Esala Perahera annual procession.
Nuwan W — Google review
Kandy City Centre is a modern shopping and entertainment hub, popular among both locals and tourists for its variety of retail outlets and leisure options. I visited here for the first time ever with my family while on a trip to Kandy, and it was quite an experience. The complex offers a wide range of facilities, including branded stores, a spacious food court with multiple cuisines, gaming zones, and modern cinema theaters. The premises are clean and well-maintained, with good restroom facilities, making it comfortable for families. However, the overall experience feels quite premium—most things come with a hefty price tag. Shopping, dining, and entertainment can be expensive, which may not be ideal for those traveling on a budget. Still, it’s a convenient and stylish place to relax and spend time, especially if you're looking for a complete outing in one location.
Sanoon M — Google review
Has all the basic amenities. Specifically a food court that serves meals with 5-10min waiting time the max. Good for a day out for a family. Has a supermarket for groceries, electric items, mobile items and bakery items. All-in-one shopping area with decent prices. Can be crowded on weekends.
Navodya E — Google review
The Heart of Modern Kandy! Kandy City Centre, or simply KCC, is without doubt the most popular and modern shopping complex in the city of Kandy. Located right in the middle of town, just a few steps away from the sacred Temple of the Tooth, it’s a place that brings together shopping, dining, and entertainment under one roof. Whether you are a tourist exploring Kandy or a local family looking for a relaxing day out, KCC is the go-to destination. The building itself is well designed with multiple floors connected by escalators and elevators, and the entire space is fully air-conditioned, which is a welcome comfort in the warm weather of Kandy. Inside, the mall feels clean, spacious, and safe, with good security and friendly staff. It is also one of the few malls in the Central Province that offers a truly international shopping experience while still maintaining a local touch. When it comes to shopping, you will find almost everything here—from clothing stores, branded shops, and shoe outlets to electronics, bookshops, jewelry stores, cosmetics, and gift shops. The variety is impressive and caters to both budget shoppers and those looking for more high-end items. The highlight for many visitors is the food court. It is large, well arranged, and offers a wide range of cuisines including Sri Lankan rice and curry, Indian, Chinese, Western fast food, and bakeries. The food is fresh, affordable, and there are plenty of seating areas. It’s one of the best spots in town to enjoy a meal with friends or family. In addition to the food court, there are also cafés and restaurants scattered throughout the mall for those who want a quieter or more refined dining experience. Entertainment is another strong point of KCC. The mall has a cinema showing both local and international films, as well as gaming areas and sometimes small events or exhibitions. It’s a fun place for young people and families to spend time, especially on weekends. The convenience of the location makes KCC stand out. Being in the very heart of Kandy, it’s easy to reach by bus, train, or even on foot if you’re exploring the city center. Parking is available, though it can get crowded during peak hours. Overall, Kandy City Centre is more than just a shopping mall—it’s a landmark of modern Kandy life. It blends shopping, food, entertainment, and convenience in one place, making it a must-visit for anyone coming to the hill capital.

Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, a stunning forest reserve located on a hillside behind the iconic Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, is a must-visit for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. This expansive sanctuary offers an array of hiking trails that wind through lush greenery, making it perfect for exploration. Historically significant as part of the Kandyan Kingdom, its name translates to 'upper palace garden,' reflecting its royal heritage.
Udawatta Kele Wildlife Sanctuary is a hidden gem in Kandy! The lush greenery, serene walking trails, and diverse wildlife make it a perfect escape from the city's hustle. I had an amazing experience exploring the peaceful forest, spotting monkeys, birds, and even a few deer along the way. The well-maintained paths lead to breathtaking viewpoints overlooking Kandy. It’s an excellent place for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking tranquillity. Highly recommend visiting early in the morning for the best experience!

A true forest escape in the middle of Kandy! 🌳🌿 Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a historic national forest reserve that gives you an authentic forest vibe — tall trees, thick greenery, and the sounds of nature all around. Just minutes away from the Temple of the Tooth, yet it feels like you’ve stepped deep into the wilderness. Tickets are very affordable (Rs. 75 for locals) and Rs. 930 for foreigners. The walking trails are shaded and peaceful, with plenty of birds, monkeys, and plants to see. It’s best to visit in the morning or evening for cooler weather. Carry water and wear comfy shoes since some paths are uphill. If you’re a couple, a family, or simply someone who loves nature, this sanctuary is the perfect place to unwind and reconnect with the forest atmosphere. A must-visit in Kandy! 🍃✨

Peaceful and refreshing place with lots of greenery. Ticket for locals is only LKR 75. Nice viewpoint over Kandy city, plus you can spot birds, deer, and monkeys. Great walking routes with benches to relax and enjoy nature.

It is a beautiful rainforest just behind the Temple of Tooth, though the entrance is a little far away. I was amazed that there is such a beautiful and thick forest in the heart of such a city. You have to buy a ticket to go in which is just LKR 75 for the residents of Sri Lanka. There are beautiful paths through the forest and they are just beautiful. Usually there are not many visitors and so you can get a very peaceful nature walk listening only to the sounds of nature. Sometimes I found some monkeys asking the way and so I carried a stick with me. Once I also spotted a few deers. If you go after a rain, you'll find leeches crawling up to you. I tried the Kodimala peak, but it was not worth the climb and there were many leeches. In short, if you are a nature lover, this is one of the best places to visit in Kandy. You can make a round in less than two hours.

930 LKR entry fee. You wouldn’t believe this place is in the busy Kandy centre. It’s so peaceful walking no around surrounded by nature. We saw turtles, pigs(!!!) and monkeys. The view of Kandy is lovely. You could spend hours here strolling around. We were there for about 1.5 hours and still didn’t walk around it all but we were taking photos and walking slow lol. 10/10 recommend this place.
Lauren — Google review
The place is quite big so we did one trail and it was lovely. We heard lots of birds and saw monkeys. The path is easy to walk on and the staff were nice. It would have helped to have more signage because we weren't sure where to go at some points. So, take a picture of the big map at the entrance for support. When you get to the caves, don't go any further along the path outside it because there are dogs on that side and we were chased by them. I'm posting a picture of that area (The caves are on the right). Management needs to make it clearer that we shouldn't be going that way with signs. There is no picnic spot inside the park, so we ate outside it. There's lots of monkeys so probably a good idea not to picnic inside the park anyway. Overall, it was really nice and relaxing. I wish we had had more time to cover more ground.

Kandy Viewpoint

Perched atop Rajapihilla Mawatha, Kandy View Point, formerly known as Arthurs Seat, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The newly constructed viewing deck provides an unparalleled vantage point to admire the beauty of Kandy. From this elevated position, visitors can marvel at the splendor of Dalada Maligawa and Kandy Lake, especially when illuminated after dark.
A great spot above Kandy offering beautiful panoramic views of the city — especially stunning at sunset or after dark. There are a few souvenir sellers around, but they’re not too pushy if you politely decline. During our visit, it wasn’t too crowded, which made the experience even more enjoyable. A peaceful and scenic place that's well worth a short stop while exploring Kandy.

"Beautiful Viewpoint in Kandy" I recently visited this viewpoint in Kandy, and the scenery was amazing. You can see the whole city with the mountains and greenery all around. It’s a peaceful place to relax, take photos, and enjoy the fresh air. Sometimes it can be a little bit busy here, but it doesn’t disturb the experience. Sunset time is especially nice when the city slowly lights up. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Kandy. 🍃✨️

A few months ago, when I took a short trip to Kandy 📍with friends, we eagerly went to see this viewpoint for the first time, especially at night during rainy weather🌌⛈️🤩. Also, since the road leading to this viewpoint is a small❗️, narrow one, there was a bit of traffic congestion. It was also observed that more people visit this viewpoint at night. That's why I was so happy to have the opportunity to see the entire beauty of Kandy at night😊, illuminated by colorful lights, and the beauty of the clouds.🌩️

A nice spot for locals and tourists. See big view of Kandy Lake, Temple of the Tooth, and Kandy town. Green mountains all around. Very beautiful! In the evening, lights make it colorful and bright. Great for photos.

If you’re visiting Kandy, the Kandy View Point is an absolute must-see. It’s only a short tuk-tuk ride or a brisk walk from the city centre, yet the change in perspective is amazing. From the top you get a sweeping panorama of the entire lake, the Temple of the Tooth, the lush hillsides, and the red-roofed colonial buildings that give Kandy its timeless charm. On a clear day you can see the mountains fading into layers of mist, which is breathtaking at sunrise and even more romantic at sunset when the city lights start to glow. The viewpoint itself is easy to access—there’s a small parking area and plenty of space to stand or take photos without feeling rushed. It can get busy in the late afternoon, but the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with locals selling fresh fruit and a few handicrafts. They’re polite and not pushy, which adds to the pleasant experience. What I loved most is how it captures Kandy’s unique character: you can hear the temple drums in the distance, watch the lake shimmer below, and feel a cool breeze even on a warm day. It’s the perfect spot for photographers, couples, families, or anyone who wants to take a quiet break and just soak in the beauty of the hill country. Tips: Best time is early morning or just before sunset for softer light and fewer crowds. Bring a light jacket if you stay for sunset; the breeze can be cool. Don’t forget your camera or a fully charged phone—this is one of Kandy’s most Instagram-worthy locations. Whether you have a few hours or just a quick stop on your itinerary, the Kandy View Point delivers a magical perspective of the city. Highly recommended!

Kandy Lake Club - Cultural Dance Show

The Kandy Lake Club is a must-visit for those seeking a cultural dance show in Sri Lanka. The venue showcases traditional Sri Lankan dances, including the rare fire walking performance. Dancers wear elaborate costumes and headdresses while performing to percussion music, depicting animals through song lyrics. The hour-long show features fire dancers, kolam dancers, and other traditional performers, with about a dozen dances on display.
We really enjoyed the show!! Especially impressed by the ‘table service’ - the waiters gave us the menu as soon as we sat down and we had drinks and snacks within minutes, and we could pay by card. It made it super comfortable not having to get up and queue especially in the intermission. The dance was something different and so cool to see the traditions of Sri Lanka. Talented bunch of people and we’d go again! 🥰💃🏼 Tip: book online beforehand to reserve your seat as it gets busy! The seats will say reserved on them when you arrive so they’re super efficient and organised.

We watched a truly beautiful cultural show here — the performances were absolutely incredible! From traditional dances to amazing drumming, every part of the show was full of energy and emotion. And the grand finale? Walking on fire! 😱 A mind-blowing end to an unforgettable evening. Highly recommended if you’re in Kandy and want to experience something authentic and impressive!

Visited with my family and parents ,Show is a captivating showcase of Sri Lanka’s rich traditions. The performances, from graceful dances to powerful drumming, were truly mesmerizing. Vibrant costumes and skilled artistry brought centuries of culture to life on stage. The fire dance finale was breathtaking and left the audience in awe. A must-see experience in Kandy that beautifully captures the soul of Sri Lanka. They serve beer and other drinks ..I wish they keep tea and coffee 😁☕ too

Honestly when we booked the tickets we weren't expecting that the simple theatre we are in will reveal us a stunning show with some really good professional performers! The dancers were reallyyyyyy good and it's something that you'll never watch in any other place. It's a mix of cultures and religions although the time in Srilanka which is marvelous to know. Not to mention the "Walking on emerds show" which was undescripable I'm still amazed till now how they did it! A must do experience don't miss it!
Acile M — Google review
The show is nice but make sure you are well fed before you go, because a pack of chips was 1000lkr. Seats are a bit uncomfortable as well. One of the tourist had an accident and they did not have a first aid. In one of the one the artist walks on the fire pit and there was no fire extinguisher, not close, not close, and I doubt if they even had one at the venue. God bless their artists!!
Arti V — Google review
The dancers were amazing definitely worth it. When we first got there, it’s a big open hall with rows of seats. It kind of felt a bit old but not antique old more like well used old or a bingo hall old. But I think this added to the experience we sat down and there is a small bench in front of every row of chairs. Which is actually kind of useful for your bingo cards or the beers you can order. But to be honest as soon as the performance starts you forget all about this and become amazed at the skill of the dancers, musicians and their costumes. This would be a world class show at any arts festival in the world.
Karl G — Google review
I wouldn’t recommend the Kandy Lake Club. Some of the dances were beautiful, but overall the show felt mostly catered to tourists, which made the experience seem a bit fake. My personal experience was also disappointing. I’m short, and tall people were seated right in front of me. Although many good seats were clearly available, when I asked to move, I was only offered a bad seat in the corner. Even after the show had started and 40 minutes later, no one bothered to re-seat me. Only after insisting again during the intermission did I finally get a decent seat. On top of that, the venue was full of bugs, making it hard to enjoy the performance as I was itchy throughout. Overall, not worth it.

Things I like: - service was great. He was a gentleman very attentive and fast - location was great. Good views to the lake - nice nature inside with a lot of plants - no service charge added to the bill - nice paintings with a lot of history in the walls. Things I didn’t like: - overpriced drinks were very expensive

Lively place with a nice location and a good food spread. Food was delicious and service was good. It was a veggie day for us hence did not try any non-vegetarian dishes. We tried the garlic fried rice, mixed vegetables with vermicelli and mushrooms in hot butter sauce.

1. Overpriced 2. Waiters will confuse you to order more! 3. Food is plain average and we didnt see the reason for this hyped place. Nothing mention worthy other than the good view of the Kandy Lake. We didnt get any 5 star dining experience but we paid LKR 3400 for a decent Tom Yum Soup.

Rooftop is one of the best place for Kandy city view. Atmosphere is great. Food was great, We had the Mix Grill Platter, got to say not a fan of the sausages that was in there but the rest was delicious. We had our drinks at rooftop cus why not.. but had to go to 2nd floor for the food, it was a bit of sad but understandable if rooftop is for drinks only... ovarall love it.

Amazing staff. We were out of season so it was quiet but they had a band playing, which added to the atmosphere. The choice of food is very varied. You could travel around the globe on the menu, and as such, I think the quality suffers, but the views from here across Kandy are worth the mediocre food.

Had an amazing experience at Senani by Oak Ray. This restaurant and the hotel is located at a View Point. Meals were really good at their restaurant. Roof top is an open area without any shelter which gives you the best view of the city of Kandy. Prices are average. Table service is available but need improvements. Live music is available and it was really thrilling to enjoy the music while dinning. Highly Recommend.

Food is delicious and large portion is enough for 3 people. Nice view of the lake, ambient environment. Music on demand from the live 3 piece band. At night, it’s light up pretty well without a roof, Overall a good experience. Staff is sometimes gets overwhelmed when the place is crowded and stops being professional. Have to ask multiple times to clear a table or clean the place. Parking is available for around 4-5 vehicles

Slightly Chilled Lounge, Sports Bar & Restaurant, also known as Bamboo Garden restaurant, provides stunning city views from its partially covered inside lounge and outdoor terrace. The terrace is a popular spot during dusk when guests can observe fruit bats and birds returning to their nests. While specializing in Chinese cuisine, the restaurant also offers popular Western dishes like pasta, burgers, sandwiches, and fajitas.
We had wonderful time in here just purely enjoy the amazing food. I missed Chinese food so much in here you can have real authentic food experience in Kandy. Also the location is prefect for sunset and lovely vibe with live music we just had great date night there just look the entire mountain and lake! I visited Slightly Chilled Lodge in Kandy today with my family for dinner. We tried several dishes including French fries, cashew nuts, chicken fried rice, seafood fried rice, beef fried rice, a sweet and sour beef dish, a sweet and sour chicken dish, tomato and cucumber salad, chicken noodles, a fruit platter, and a few mocktails. The food didn’t taste as I expected. It was okay, but not particularly good, and definitely not memorable for a family dinner. Pork was listed on the menu, but when we requested it, we were told it wasn’t available, which was disappointing. The ambience was fine if you’re there to relax with a beer and enjoy the atmosphere. There was also live music, with a musician playing guitar and singing English songs, which added a nice touch. The lighting was quite low, so the photos I took turned out dark — not really a complaint, more just the mood of the place. On the positive side, they do accept reservations, and when we arrived, our table was already reserved and ready for us. The cost worked out to around 2,700 LKR per person, and I don’t feel it was worth that price for the quality of food we received.

It is really a nice place, atmosphere and food are amazing! Here you can have an amazing view to the big Budha. I had seafood noodles that was really fresh and tasty and my boyfriend had a burger that also was delicious.🥘🍔 But my favourite thing was the Banana milkshake and the mango Juice, please try it!🥤🍺 Also our bill was a bit expensive because we had many drinks 🤭 but here the prices are honesty and the portions are good. There is a Pool table that is really fun to spend some hours playing!( and is free to play)🥳 Even the owner of the place came to join us! We really appreciate all the kindness from the staff and owner...made us feel very welcoming here in Kandy

We had an epic time at Slightly Chilled in Kandy! Sunset views are stunning, the beers were ice-cold, and the vibe was perfect for two spice-crazed adventurers. We started with the Sichuan chicken and spring rolls. The staff warned us the chicken was fiery… and of course we said, “Bring it on!” One bite later, our mouths were on fire, but we were impressed. Then the owner overheard our spice obsession and dropped the Taiwanese spicy sauce bomb—our taste buds screamed, sweat poured, tears flowed, but the beers kept us alive. We ended up chatting with the owner about our love for fiery food and how on earth Sri Lanka became the choice and end up being this amazing, trading laughs and borderline dangerous spice challenges. If you want insane views, friendly staff, and food that will literally set your mouth on fire while making you laugh, this is your spot.

What an unbelievable gem tucked in a hilly corner of Kandy! After a trip through Sri Lanka that was outstanding except for the music on offer (Trax in Ahangama being a notable exception), I chanced upon SCL in Kandy. The owner is a passionate DJ who uses a rare ARS rotary mixer and plays some groovy downtempo and house music. The views from this place are great too. The staff were alert throughout and very keen to make sure everything was fine. Big ups!

The Colombo Street location is particularly renowned for its unrivaled menu featuring delicious dosas made with black lentils, aromatic chutneys, and spicy vegetables. This humble establishment prides itself on using fresh, high-quality ingredients to serve mouthwatering dosas and other South Indian delicacies.
I had the pleasure of dining at Balaji Dosai in Kandy, and it was truly an enjoyable experience. The food was superb — rich in flavor, freshly prepared, and served with generous portions. What made the visit even more memorable was the warm hospitality. I was entertained by Muhammad Fazul, a very kind and attentive person who ensured everything went smoothly. Dosa are really delicious here! ❤️ You have a whole range of dosa here. We had an Onion dosa (500LKR), Ghee dosa (600LKR) and a Paper dosa (500LKR) which were really tasty.🤤 You have to go to the cashier, pay and order yourself at the beginning. So a tip would be, ask someone to go get a table and the other can straightaway go to the cashier and make the order. You’d save some time. 😌 P.S The juices are tasty, but a little pricey compared to the size of the cup. Banana shake (600LKR), Faluda (500LKR), Banana lassi (600LKR)

Highly Recommended!!🎖️️🍽️ We went to this place few months ago to get the breakfast. The waitors were busy and it took some time to order the food. We ordered a poori set and a papaya 🍹. It took about 10 mins to receive the order. The poori set was very 😋. They maintain a clean environment. We also had tried food from this place several years ago. My favourite was ghee doasi at those times. If you are looking for vegetarian options and a tamil foods, never miss this place.

I had a very unpleasant experience at Hotel Balaji today. While having my meal, I found a worm inside the curry, which was extremely disappointing and unacceptable for any restaurant and the premises management ignored like a it was normal thing.Am writing to this raises serious concerns about hygiene and food safety practices. I hope the management takes immediate action to ensure better cleanliness and food handling standards in the future.

We went to Balaji Dosai in Kandy and had a dosa so crispy it could double as a frisbee 🥞, and the poori? The Empire Cafe, a renowned restaurant in Sri Lanka, offers a delightful mix of local and international cuisine at affordable prices. Housed in a beautifully restored colonial building in the heart of Kandy, this charming eatery exudes old-world charm and provides a cozy atmosphere for diners. With courteous staff and excellent service, it's known for its value for money. The cafe is located near the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and boasts trendy retro decor that adds to its appeal.
Dine in feel like a having meal with old proud governors, because of the colonial structure and also because of the foods are in great quality, tasty and balanced well. Very unique flavors and you can find local, Indian, Chinese and western foods here. My baby boys were so happy with their shrimp burger(that I never found in anywhere) Mac & Cheese. We tried curry noodles, kottu and rice and curry unique to Sri Lanka. Very tasty. Nice homemade Ice cream flavors together make refreshed the hottest day I faced in Sri Lanka so far. Also nice juices with orange color coconuts.

Nice location but honestly the empire breakfast I received was 100% not worth the 2800 rupees they charge. Can get better and cheaper in central London and that says a lot. Beans were cold and tiniest portion of spinach/mushrooms. Also the “sausage” was just a hotdog.

Arrived here after visiting the tooth Relic Temple as it's situated right next to it. 1450 for rice and curry is expected for tourist price and tasted really good. Food arrived quickly. However, kotthu didn't taste very nice and we ordered some cokes that didn't taste nice nor like the branded Coca colas. Drinks are of high price.

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, is a historic and expansive botanical garden in Sri Lanka. Established in 1843 during British colonial rule, the gardens boast over 4000 species of plants including a diverse collection of orchids, medicinal plants, spices, and palm trees. With its lush greenery and towering trees, the gardens attract nearly 2 million visitors annually.
The Royal Botanical Garden in Kandy is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever visited. The moment you walk in you feel surrounded by nature in its purest form. The variety of trees, flowers and plants is incredible and you can spend hours just wandering through the paths without getting bored. The orchid house is stunning and the collection of palm trees creates such a unique atmosphere. I really enjoyed the wide open lawns where you can sit down and take in the scenery while watching families, couples and travelers enjoying the same calmness. The garden is very well maintained and it feels like every corner has something different to discover whether it is giant bamboos, bright tropical flowers or ancient trees with roots spreading like art across the ground. It is also a great place to escape the busy city for a few hours. The air feels fresher here and the whole environment is relaxing and refreshing. If you love photography or simply want to connect with nature this is a perfect spot. I would highly recommend visiting the Royal Botanical Garden if you are in Kandy. Restaurant
Xiang Yun Chinese Restaurant in Kandy offers an exceptional dining experience with its authentic Chinese cuisine and excellent service. The restaurant is known for its swift serving of delicious dishes, allowing guests to savor their meals at a leisurely pace. While prices may be slightly higher, the quality of the food justifies the cost. The menu boasts a wide variety of outstanding Chinese dishes not commonly found in other restaurants in the area. Visitors can expect a pleasant atmosphere and attentive staff during their visit.
One of the best and cheapest places to dine and takeaway. We got dumplings🥟 Xiang Yun Special Fried rice, Corn soup and Indonesian Fried rice and they all were great. There were very big portions, we had enough left to take home and eat for dinner and the large corn soup was just a lot! We went with 9 people and corn soup was way too much so we got them for take away. And with all of those the taste is also excellent 👌.The atmosphere to was best and sanitizer. This is a got to go restraunt.

Bought 3 packs of chicken set menu on 07.08.2025. Very poor food quality for the high prices. Instead of the chop suey they had add some dry long bean fry to two of the packs and other pack had boiled beans. No seasoning at all. When we complaint the manager, he asked for proof pictures. The pictures were sent, no response or action taken till now. Very very poor service. Not worth any cent spent. DO NOT BUY FOOD from this crappy place with your hard earned money.

We attended the Valentine’s Day dinner, which was advertised as a romantic candlelight experience, but it was completely misleading. The so-called “candlelight dinner” took place inside a hall where multiple birthday parties were happening simultaneously, making the atmosphere far from romantic. The service was extremely poor.waiters were overwhelmed and barely had time to attend to all the tables. We had to wait 15 minutes for our plates to be cleared, even after informing them. The main course was spaghetti, which was nothing special. Additionally, the meat portions were inconsistently served, one plate had a decent amount while the other had very little. Overall, this felt like a poorly organized and deceptive event. Definitely not worth the price. I wouldn’t recommend it and certainly won’t be returning.

Amazing food! The service was fabulous! Special thanks to Mr. Manjula for his attentive service. We enjoyed every dish we ordered.

Been here quite a few times, and honestly, it’s probably the best place in Kandy to get authentic Chinese food. They’ve got a massive variety to choose from. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but I’d say it’s totally worth it. Their small portions are usually enough for two people. Only downsid is that the dessert menu is kinda disappointing—barely any options there.

The food was absolutely amazing and the service was just as impressive. The staff were incredibly friendly and made the experience even better. Highly recommend!

Good food, I would say the highlight was the chicken dumplings for me. I received tofu instead of pork so had to wait again. The pic attached was the tofu, not the pork dish. The pork was a little fatty and the sauce a bit spicy and I asked for no spice. The food took a long time to be prepared. Good sized portions. Good service. They accept card payment. I enjoyed it.

Upon discovering Open Rice Sri Lanka, I immediately had a craving for their chicken submarine. This decision proved to be fantastic and the most enjoyable dining experience I've had thus far. The restaurant offers a customer-friendly menu and there was minimal wait time. Additionally, they provide food delivery services through Uber and Pick. It's worth noting that Open Rice has been recognized as one of the best establishments in Kandy on TripAdvisor, proudly displaying their certification.
I had the pleasure of dining at Open Rice in Kandy and tried their mixed fried rice, chop suey rice, chicken noodles, and naan set menu. For beverages, I enjoyed the chocolate milkshake, lime juice, and soft drinks. Every dish was absolutely delicious, and there was nothing to fault! The prices are slightly on the higher side, but they are still affordable considering the quality and taste. The service was also very friendly and welcoming. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience—highly recommended!

I ordered Thai mix rice. The food was disappointing. It was overly salty, which made it difficult to enjoy the flavors. The meats were very hard and tough to chew, lacking tenderness and proper preparation. Overall, the meal did not meet expectations.
Sachintha V — Google review
One of the worst meals I've ever had. Sauce was bland and flavourless. Rice was salty and flavourless. Tasted like it was from the microwave. Same as the naan bread which looked like it been made 20 years ago with terrible butter. Chicken was full of bones and flavourless. Also tiny portion but maybe not a bad thing considering the quality. Avoid .

Had a dinner out with my family at their outlet in Peradeniya road ans here's what I experienced. The service was exveptional. The steward who attended to us provided a really good service and was very welcoming. However the foos did not meet my expectations. We ordered a Mongolian seafood fried rice, a pork fried rice and a chicken noodles. The sauce of the mongolian rice was not mixed it came as a topping which is not the way I prefer. The pork fried rice had plenty of meat in it and can say it had an average taste. Same goes with the noodle. I kind of felt like the food lacked a little bit of salt. Pork fried rice may had none at all. Space wise it feela a little bit conjested. We dined in the secons floor. First floor gets crowded quickly it seems. If you are looking for a place to have privacy for what you takk this wouldn't be the ideal place. Its a little packed. Overall the experience was average. Would like to see some taste improvements im their food. But I definetely will go back for a other meal.

We purchased take away for veggie burgers this time. Very happy with it. Fresh n delivered fast..Also the staff person at the car park was really helpful to us during a previous day during a very busy hour in the premises. That time also v take away vegetarian food, rice n chop souy, was very nice with variety of veggies..Thank You! Have not dine in-house. Staff was friendly at the take away outlet.

I go here almost every day. I went yesterday after a while. There was a little boy there. Although the food here is good, I don't like the way they treat customers. But that boy is great. As soon as he comes, he talks nicely and explains everything about the food, from the sauce that comes with the food. A place everyone in Kandy wants to go to. I guarantee it.

Specialty Museums
Nestled just four kilometers south of Kandy, the Ceylon Tea Museum is a delightful stop for those exploring the region. Housed in a former tea factory from 1925, this museum offers an intriguing glimpse into Sri Lanka's rich tea heritage. Visitors can discover the legacies of pioneers like James Taylor and Thomas Lipton while viewing historical artifacts related to tea production, such as vintage drying ovens and sorting machines.
As a true tea addict, visiting the Ceylon Tea Museum was an unforgettable experience. The museum beautifully covers everything you need to know about tea — from its rich history in Sri Lanka to the fascinating process of cultivation and production. What impressed me the most was the chance to taste a wide variety of teas, all for less than USD 4. It’s absolutely tremendous value for such a unique and authentic experience. Highly recommended for anyone who loves tea or simply wants to understand why Ceylon tea is celebrated worldwide!
Aya S — Google review
The Ceylon Tea Museum, located near the center of Kandy, is an insightful and well-preserved attraction dedicated to the history and heritage of Sri Lanka’s world-famous tea industry. Housed in the beautifully restored Hantane Tea Factory, the museum provides a comprehensive look at the evolution of tea cultivation in Sri Lanka, from its introduction by James Taylor in the 19th century to modern-day practices. Visitors can explore antique tea-processing machinery, old photographs, documents, and tools that reveal how tea transformed the island’s economy and culture. The museum also features exhibits on famous tea estates, different types of Ceylon tea, and traditional tea-making techniques. One of the highlights is the rooftop tea shop, where visitors can enjoy a fresh cup of authentic Ceylon tea while taking in panoramic views of Kandy and the surrounding hills. The museum is well-organized, informative, and engaging for both adults and children. Knowledgeable staff are available to answer questions and provide additional context about the exhibits. While it is not a large museum, every corner offers something to learn or admire, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts, tea lovers, and anyone curious about Sri Lanka’s tea culture. The museum also offers guided tours for a more immersive experience, adding value to your visit.

Visiting the Ceylon Tea Museum was such a wonderful experience! The staff here are incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable, and passionate about tea. They took the time to explain the history of Ceylon tea and showed us around with genuine warmth. The museum is well-maintained, with fascinating old machinery, exhibits, and a lovely ambience that brings the story of tea to life. The tea tasting at the end was the perfect finishing touch. Special thanks to the team for making the visit so memorable – your hospitality truly stands out. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kandy!

Visited the Tea Museum on a quiet morning. Was given a great explanation of the history of the museum and then left to explore on my own. It was low season and there were only two other people there. The museum tells the story of the tea manufacturing industry in a building which housed the factory 100 years ago; it was humble presentation of history and a nice stop away from the bustling centre of Kandy. Ticket price is 1000 Rupees which also gives you a free cup of tea on the top floor, and 10% off any purchases in the shop. Well worth a visit to explore the history of Ceylon Tea.
Hannah E — Google review
Not a great experience for us. It's an old tea factory now restored as a museum. They have all the machines that is being used to make a tea donated by different tea states of Sri Lanka. Location is nearby from the centre, situated on the top of the hill from where you can have an amazing view of tea garden. Entrance fee is 1000 Rs which include group guided tour and a complementary tea at the restaurant. The lady ( in 40s) which was assigned to us for the guidance had absolutely no knowledge about tea or how the process works and why do you go through the process. It seemed she was reading the script to us. We asked her few questions about didn't get any answer. At the restaurant you can order a THALI TEA for RS1000 which comes with 7 different types of tea. Overall you can spend 2-3 hours if you have time
Anant K — Google review
Wonderful Tea Experience! Visiting this tea factory was one of the highlights of my trip! The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable — they explained every step of the tea-making process with such passion. The tour was both educational and fun, and the aroma of freshly processed tea filled the air. The tasting session was amazing — I never knew there were so many distinct flavors and aromas in Ceylon tea. The view from the terrace was breathtaking.

Lovely museum, very friendly staff. Beware there are only stairs to get up the 4 floors, my son and i were okai but i know my old parents would have found it hard. 4th floor has a shop and a tea bar were you are offered a complementary cup of tea

The visit to the Ceylon Tea Museum was a truly wonderful experience. The guide first explained how tea is made, after which I was able to explore the different floors of the museum on my own. Kandy Municipal Central Market, established in 1972, is a popular shopping destination in Kandy. It offers a wide range of products including local fruits, vegetables, handicrafts, souvenirs, textiles and leather goods. The market is conveniently located in the city center with multiple entrances and a bustling atmosphere. Visitors can explore the ground floor for local food items and the top floor for clothing, books and souvenirs.
Really enjoyed walking around all the market and seeing the baby produce stalls, so much colour and variety, as well as the bakery and then spice shops. Also lots of clothing and souvenir shops so great for getting something to take back - watch out for the clothing store owners as they will try to charge tourists too much, but they expect to haggle and you'll get a good price eventually. Got loads of fresh spices and tea at reasonable prices from one stall with a very friendly owner who didn't need any haggling at all.

We bought some mango tea to try it out for 1k rupees, which not sure is expensive or not. We didn’t buy anything else, just came to see what the local market has to offer so definitely recommend popping in if you have some time and love seeing local produce

Kandy Municipal Market is a vibrant and lively place to experience local culture and shopping all in one spot. The market offers a wide variety of products including fresh fruits and vegetables, are well-known for their quality and reasonable prices. The market atmosphere is colorful and bustling, giving visitors a genuine local feel, though it can get a bit crowded and some areas near the fish market might have a strong smell. Many friendly shopkeepers provide helpful service without being pushy, making the shopping experience pleasant. Opening hours are daily from 7 AM to 9 PM, allowing plenty of time to explore. Besides shopping, there are a few cafés and restaurants nearby to relax and enjoy local flavors. The market is a recommended stop when visiting Kandy and provides an authentic glimpse into local life and culture. Highly recommended for anyone looking to shop local products and immerse in Kandy’s cultural vibe!

This place is truly a hidden gem with immense potential to be developed into something even greater. Situated right at the heart of the town, it naturally attracts people from all walks of life and has become an especially valuable spot for the middle-class community. The location itself adds to its charm, making it convenient and accessible for anyone looking to fulfill their daily needs. One of the most remarkable things about this place is the wide range of items available. From essential household goods to fresh produce, everything a home requires can be found here without hassle. For those who seek good quality food at affordable rates, this is undoubtedly one of the best options. The variety of fruits and vegetables is particularly impressive—fresh, well-stocked, and reasonably priced, making it a favorite among regular visitors. What makes it even more special is not just the affordability but also the sense of community it creates. Families, working individuals, and even visitors from nearby areas find it convenient to shop here because everything is gathered in one place. With just a little improvement and thoughtful development, this location could easily transform into a bustling hub, offering even more comfort and satisfaction to its customers. Highly recommended for anyone who values both quality and economy, this place is bound to leave you impressed and make you want to return again and again.

Everyone will be pestering you to buy stuff from them. Especially for women you will get whistled at and won't find any peace at all to look at produce. If you are after tea and spices go to Hatton tea store around the corner instead. Very nice and non pushy shopkeepers.
J O — Google review
Overpriced (as told by our tuk tuk driver (foreigners charged higher rates. Spices don't look fresh. It's nice to visit a 100yo market but inside doesn't match the outside!
James L — Google review
If you are a foreigner tourist, everyone will try to take you to places and sell you items that you don't want. Like in every market in the world. You just have to be careful and know how to handle it. Besides from that, I highly recommend to go to the fruit side and ask a shopper to give you samples of every fruit they got there. They won't charge you money, so offer them a tip or buy some fruits after trying them. People there are really nice and respectful
Benjamín P — Google review
The ground floor is great experience. The first floor is more tourists-centred with some really nice fabrics and souvenirs. BUT beware of the shop in the picture: it’s run by scammers that will charge you a few times the prices, take too much money and then shut down the place so that you can’t get back to them. If you’re looking for nice products and literally 1/3 of the scammers price, go to the other side. Two very kind guys will help you choose the perfect products

I've been there twice, and both times have been cool. The entrance is bright and tasteful, but the food takes a long time to make. The first time we went, there were too many people, and this time there were too many, but the service was really bad.

Atmosphere is very cozy and overlooking the river. The waiters were very friendly and hospitable. The carefully explained what some of the dishes were and gave good suggestions based on what we liked. Menu had a variety of options for every course. The food was prepared as we waited and came to the table still steaming and freshly made. Springrills and wontons were extremely crispy too. They especially managed the level of spice for each dish according to our requests. Sufficient quantity for sharing between 2/3 people. We only missed tea or coffee to round off the meal.

The food is good, though not everyone may find it to their liking. The atmosphere is a bit too dark — it feels like they’re trying to give a high-star restaurant vibe, but at night it’s so dim that you can’t even see the true color of the food. Still, it’s a nice spot if you’re planning a birthday party or a celebration. 🎉

Visited this place again after 2 years. Quality has gone down a bit now, most of the items in the list that we wanted were sold out, and then we ordered a milkshake, choco flash and a green tea ice cream. Milk shake was not that good, the choco flash was more like banana flash. It didn't mention it has banana in it. And then the green tea ice cream tastes nothing like green tea. More like vanilla ice cream.. The flavours on the menu's doesn't add up with the taste of them. And cherry on top of the cake, they don't take card payments. Ice cream in general was good just didn't match up to the flavours it was listed.

Amazing ice cream experience! One of the best things in Kandy, no exaggeration! We went there twice in two days, would definitely go again if we were there longer... Every flavour that we tried was really really delicious. I can't pick my favourite.

Amazing experience! I recommend getting the mango. They don't actually fry the ice cream like in Mexico it's more rolled on a freezing surface. Absolutely delicious! At the time of this review for every 100 SLR is 0.57 USD. So for under 3 bucks you can have an awesome dessert! Please come here!!!

I waited almost 6 months to get a chance to try the fried ice cream at this place! It was a worthy wait and an awesome experience to remember the last day of 2018! We tried the Banana Split and the Passion Fruit Ice cream. Both were tasting sooo good! Even the prices were reasonable. There is parking for one vehicle but I managed to find a public parking close by. Most of their ingredients are halaal but for one or two ice creams they add some non halaal products which they are Keen in educating us.

If you're traveling by train from Colombo to Kandy, consider getting off at Peradeniya instead of Kandy. This allows you to explore the University grounds, wander through the Botanical Gardens, and enjoy a meal at Hela Bojun. The restaurant provides parking on the right side and in front of the building without charging any fees. Upon entering, customers must first order their food from a menu displayed on glass panels.
A paradise for Vegetarian Food Even for not being vegetarian or vegan, I couldn't appreciate more the genuineness of this place under all aspects. Very popular and highly frequented but welcoming at the same time. The variety of vegetarian food options here is incredible and delicious, from appetisers to desserts. There are also some shops where to buy plants, fresh fruits and vegetables and other local products. Very basic and self-service style but absolutely a must for all genuine local food lovers when travelling to Kandy. 💯 recommended 👌 👍

Good food, prices reasonable, atmosphere open and nice, staff clears table quickly, our travel guide took us here as we were visiting Sri Lanka for the first time and didn't know where to find local vegan food and this was a big relief. I still don't know the names of all the food but we had string hoppers with curry, fried chilli, kuttu, mango pineapple pudding made with coconut milk and something like a Jalebi. We also drank wood apple juice which was very tasty and mix fruit juice. Overall pleasant experience. Only the use of washroom costs 100Lkr which is very high.

Lovely setup by the banks of the Mahaweli River. Cool breeze. The Rice and curry meal was ok. Downside is the stairs to come down from the main road. Parking space available on the road. Very hospitable staff and obliging. Recommended venue. BYOB entertained

Fun place to hang out with your friends and have a drink overlooking the Mahawali River. The place is calm and staff gives us all the freedom we want. Food is good and affordable. This place offers private dining areas as well. Some people might find the furnitures and facilities are a bit out dated, but the breeze coming from the river wash those thoughts away. For the past two years we have had good memories, stories and fun vibes attached with this place. One minor drawback is the lack of parking. Other than that, this place has all it needs to be a great pub. Highly recommend.

I went there several times to meet my friends there and the experience was worth it. Even a five-star hotel in Kandy cannot compare to the experience of having a drink with a beautiful river view in a traditional Sri Lankan hut. The food is also very good, especially the deviled mushroom dish. If you are going with a large group it is better to call to make a reservation. The only downside is that the stairs to the restaurant are quite steep so be careful if you are going with older people. Apart from Kumbuka, it is a must visit restaurant in Kandy.

Day 3

Off the beaten path
For day 3, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Sandagiri Maha Seya. Not quite as popular as Ceylon Tea Museum, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 8 hours.

Buddhist temple
Sandagiri Maha Seya, the largest stupa in Kandy District, is a newly constructed Buddhist religious site nestled in the picturesque Hanthana mountain range, just a short distance from Kandy town. The access road to this impressive white dagoba begins near the highest point of the Hanthana road. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of mist-covered mountains and lush landscapes.
Sandagiri Mahaseya is a recent impressive addition to the many Buddhist places of worship in and around Kandy. This temple set amidst a tea plantation on a hill in the Hantana Range about 5 kms from the Kandy city centre. The temple can be accessed from the vehicle park by tuk through a narrow road or a bit more challenging flight of about 200 steps. The stupa at 100 feet is the second tallest in the area and like all modern temples is hollow and houses a large inner hall supported by a single column designed as a bo tree. The inside is ornately decorated and has a beautiful statue of the Buddha. From the large belfry on the side of the temple you can get a 180° view of the surrounding hills.
Adrian C — Google review
The stupa is located high up (about 930 meters above sea level), so its terrace offers panoramic, 180-degree views of the surrounding landscape — the Hanthana mountain range, valleys, cliffs (like Katusukonda, Uragala), and even the Mahaweli River valley. Because of its position, mist, sunrise/sunset, and changing cloud cover can create very atmospheric scenes. Perfect for photography, quiet contemplation, or just taking a break from the hustle of the city.
DJ S — Google review
We visited the location to participate in a poya day event. The place was so crowded on the day and barely made space. The view is breathtaking from the top. Washroom facilities need to be improved in the premises and also the dhamma ahala was also under development. But overall it is in a very beautiful location.
Nirmani S — Google review
Hanthana Sandagiri Maha Seya is a magnificent white stupa located on the Hanthana mountain range, surrounded by stunning landscapes and fresh mountain air. The location itself is very calming perfect for those who love spirituality, nature and panoramic views of the hills. Watching the sunrise or sunset from here is truly magical 🌄 Many visitors mistakenly believe they have to park their vehicles at the first entrance car park and climb hundreds of steps to reach the top. In reality, you can comfortably drive all the way up to the upper car park near the stupa. 🚗 The road is smooth, with just one sharp bend in the middle slightly tricky for long vehicles like vans or SUVs, but cars can manage easily. Once at the top, the peaceful atmosphere of the stupa combined with the breathtaking mountain scenery makes this an unforgettable stop in Kandy. A must-visit for travelers looking to experience both culture and nature in one place. 🌿
Thusith P — Google review
Perched about 930 m above sea level in the Hanthana range, just 6 km from central Kandy, the stupa is accessible via a winding road near the Ceylon Tea Museum . It’s currently the largest stupa in Kandy District, standing approximately 33 m tall with a circumference of around 100 m

A Peaceful Retreat with Stunning Views! I had the privilege of visiting the Sandagiri Maha Seya in Hanthana, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The temple is tucked away in the serene hills, offering a peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for reflection and meditation. The stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and Kandy town only add to its charm. The architecture is magnificent, with intricate carvings and statues that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the area. The monks are welcoming and kind, and there’s a real sense of tranquility as you explore the temple grounds. Whether you're looking to connect spiritually or simply enjoy a moment of peace, this place offers both. The hike up to the temple is moderate and enjoyable, with the journey itself being a part of the experience. If you’re in the Kandy region, I highly recommend a visit to Sandagiri Maha Seya!

The Red Mosque of Kandy is a historic and stunning landmark located in the old town, near the Lord Kataragama Temple. Its beautiful red facade stands out among the surrounding commercial buildings, making it a popular spot for street photography. The mosque features Indian Islamic architecture and is one of the oldest mosques in Colombo. While visitors may not be dressed appropriately to enter, admiring its unique look from outside is still worthwhile.
Very clean from the outside, despite being on a busy road. The detail is so intricate and eye catching. We didn’t go inside but enjoyed admiring it from the street and is a good place to stop when exploring Kandy centre.

Located in the heart of Kandy, this Masjid is beautiful and has a very peaceful vibe to it. All the members are super friendly. Wash room and Wudhu facilities are available. The biggest con is they don't have ladies prayer room facilities but however ladies can pray in the second floor with separate washroom facilities upon request. Limited parking space is available.

The mosque is located down the same road, on which Lord Kataragama Temple is located, in the Kandy City Center. The mosque is located among the surrounding commercial buildings. The beautiful facade of the mosque which is visible from the road, is painted red which gives the mosque, its name. This place is good for street food just infront of this mosque there are many restaurants so you can enjoy local srilankan dishes. Plus this street is so buzy so its a good place to do street photography.

The Kandy National Museum, located next to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is a popular tourist attraction in Sri Lanka. Housed in a building originally constructed for the king's concubines during King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe's reign, it showcases Kandyan architecture and over 5000 museum objects depicting the history, culture, and traditions of Sri Lanka from the Kandyan era. The museum displays weapons, artifacts, and more from this period.
The Kandy National Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in the rich cultural and historical heritage of Sri Lanka. Located near the iconic Temple of the Tooth Relic, the museum provides a deep dive into the Kandyan era and the broader history of the island. The museum is housed in a beautifully preserved building that was once part of the royal palace complex, adding to the authenticity of the experience. Inside, you’ll find an impressive collection of artifacts, including ancient weapons, ceremonial items, traditional Kandyan costumes, and intricately carved objects that reflect the craftsmanship of the time. What I particularly enjoyed was the attention to detail in the displays. Everything is well-organized, with detailed descriptions that explain the significance of each exhibit. The museum offers a thorough look at the culture, history, and artistry of the Kandyan kingdom, as well as Sri Lanka’s colonial period. For anyone exploring Kandy, I highly recommend a visit to the Kandy National Museum. It’s a fantastic way to understand the historical context of the area and appreciate the depth of Sri Lanka’s past. A perfect complement to visiting the Temple of the Tooth Relic!

This museum is conveniently located in the palace area nestled behind the temple of tooth. It was overall informative of the history of Kandy and had some great pieces with simple but informative information in a number of languages (including English). My personal highlight was some great old maps of Sri Lanka. It was very quiet when we went. It is not very large. It definitely provided lots of information however it was not exhaustive. Tickets are 600 rupees for foreign adults

Hidden Gem in Kandy. Overlooked because most people go to the tooth temple but this is really a must see in Kandy. A lot of people don’t understand the history behind this building This building established during Sri Wickrama Rajasingha era was then known as “Palle Vahala” This was used as the palace where the Queens of the king lived. This building has been built according to the architectural features of Kandy period. This pallevahala building was used to deposit the various items of historical value made by Kandy Art Association established in 1832 and technicians of Matale district. This was opened for the public as a museum 1942. This museum has over 5000 museum objects which are depicting various aspects historical and cultural events of the Kandyan period. (17-19 century A.D.) The staff are amazing. We visited during Tourism Day and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had in Sri Lanka. The staff are amazing. Highly recommended

Visited this museum with kids. We visited by walking to the back of the Kandy temple of Tooth palace along the lake edge. It's a small museum with some 17th to 19th century Kandy kingdom era items. This museum building itself is historic and part of the Kandy palace. The size of walls, doors frames is massive. Next to this museum, is another museum building called "Middle Palace", which was the king and queens bedchambers. It is opened only till 4pm. The museum consists of few large rooms. Took us less than a hour to read descriptions and see the whole.
Aksam Z — Google review
The National Museum of Kandy has over 5000 artifacts. There are 8 galleries and visitors can enjoy a rich culture and traditions of ancient kandyan era.

The Kandy National Museum was not on my list but when I asked around for the War Cemetery, I was told that it prohibited visitors now and I could, instead, visit the museum. So, there I was! I bought a ticket to visit and stepped inside. The Kandy National Museum is a treasure trove. It presents a glimpse into the past grandness. The construction itself is a piece of the past. I could see how the Kandy National Museum prominently displayed stories unique to this area. The Kandy National Museum is a knowledge store. It is a conduit through which the prior triumphs and the colonialist rule eras are communicated to groups. The Kandy National Museum though will benefit from getting some cooling/ ventilation installed. All through my visit, I was sweating buckets!

The Sri Dalada Museum is a recent addition to the Dalada Shrine in Kandy. It houses valuable artifacts that have been offered to the Sacred Tooth Relic over the years, including gifts from royalty and heads of state. The museum allows visitors to gain insight into the significance of the temple and its history without needing a guide, as locals are willing to provide explanations.
We happened to be there on a Sunday which was quite to popular day for locals to say their prayers. Make sure you have a sarong or pants to cover legs, if not there are vendors selling them to the right of temple where you can get flower offerings as well. Sarong was about 2k rupees and a whole tray of gorgeous lotus flowers were only 1k. Foreigners must enter to the right of temple , buy a ticket from the machine which only takes cash I think it was 2k per person and then you must check your shoes. All temples are barefoot. If you want to see the tooth it was a mental line up. Temple was nice for a walk around, we gave away some of our flowers and dud a little offering upstairs.

The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is truly amazing! I had the privilege of attending the evening ceremony, and it was a deeply spiritual and mesmerizing experience. The atmosphere was serene, with the sound of traditional drumming adding to the sacred ambiance. The temple itself is stunning, with intricate architecture and rich cultural significance. Entry to the temple and museum is together. You can buy flowers near the entrance (around 100 rupees for 5 stems) if you want to make an offering. Leave your shoes (tip 50 rupees on collection), pay, and in you go. We went at puja time so it was incredibly crowded with tourists and locals. It was organised, and the crowds kept moving. It was fascinating to see this kind of worship, Unfortunately the museum was closed by the time we'd finished, so we didn't see that.

This Buddhist temple in Kandy is a true gem that should be on your list when visiting the city. If you plan your visit for the afternoon, particularly after 6:00pm, you'll have the unique opportunity to witness the mesmerizing evening ceremony, though be prepared for the vibrant and lengthy music that accompanies it. The entrance fee is 2,000 LKR. For Buddhists, this site holds immense historical significance and is a must-visit. Please note that parking options for private vehicles nearby can be limited. To avoid any issues, consider parking in government-paid areas and enjoy a short walk to the temple. Additionally, it's advisable to avoid purchasing flowers at the entrance, as they tend to be quite pricey.

Kandy Katukele Pillaiyaar kovil | கட்டுக்கலை பிள்ளையார் கோவில்

Hindu temple
Located in downtown Kandy, the Katukele Pillaiar Temple, also known as Kattukalai Pillaiyar Kovil, is the largest Hindu temple in the area. It is dedicated to Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Siva and a revered deity among Sri Lanka's Tamil communities. Visitors can experience a sense of tranquility at this temple and witness various rituals. The premises offer free entry and parking facilities.
At the entrance to the Kandy city as you travel form Colombo we see near the Kandy Police Station, a Hindu Temple popularly known to the Sinhalese as Pillaiyar Kovil dedicated to God Ganesh, the elephant headed son of Siva. The history of the Kandy Pillaiyar Kovil is not known, but it is said that this holy place was founded during the early times of the British rule. The devotees started building a shrine for Ganesh after finding a statue of the God in a well there. According to the tradition, the final day of the four devales (Vishnu, Natha, Kataragama, and Pattini) in Kandy starts from the pulleyar Kovil after the water cutting ceremony. Not much information is known about the history of this temple. They conduct a nice and colorful annual pooja ceremony. There are few vegetarian restaurants and flower shops also located near the kovil.
Sanjayan S — Google review
I recommended a friend from abroad to visit this temple for her spiritual prayers, but I was shocked when she told me that she wasn’t allowed inside because foreigners are not permitted. I have never experienced such a restriction in any Hindu temple in Sri Lanka before. Even in culturally significant temples like Nallur, everyone is welcome, including Muslim women, so why is this place enforcing such unfair rules? This kind of discrimination should stop immediately! I will be raising this issue with the Hindu Cultural Department as well.
Devendhran L — Google review
Calm place. There are many rituals. Better if they could post information about the Kovil in Sinhala or English language as many non-Hindu people visit there. No any charges to enter the premises. Parking is available. Had to remove shoes and wash feet. One thing I learned is they start worshiping from left hand side and complete the circle around.

It has developed to a greater status and equipped more to face new challenges in the field than our era.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The University of Ceylon was established in 1942 to train young persons in different academic fields of study and to provide the much needed trained manpower for post-independence Ceylon. In the early parliamentary debates on the establishment of a local university it was conceptualized as one being designed on local culture to meet the manpower needs of an agricultural economy. However, the agriculture degree program was launched only 5 years after establishing the University. The early thinking was to develop the Faculty of Agriculture of the University at Gannoruwa at the premises of the Agricultural Farm School of the State Department of Agriculture, which was to be shifted to Kundasale. However, with mounting pressure to commence the agriculture program and the failure to acquire the necessary land at the proposed site, the Faculty was started in a single building within the University with only four academic staff members. The initial buildings for the faculty were built with the assistance received from Canada under Colombo Plan and with educational assistance provided by the government of USA. Establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Science at Peradeniya was approved by the then Minister of Education, on 5th April 1947. Following this, the first batch of 16 students to study agriculture was admitted after completing the General Science Qualifying (GSQ) examination in 1947. Those students followed another two years of study program in Agriculture to be conferred the B.Sc. Agriculture degree. In 1953, a Department of Agriculture was set up in the newly established Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Science, together with departments of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science. The three-year B.Sc. Agriculture degree program was subsequently strengthened by including a one-year farm practical training program conducted at Mahailluppallama to replace the requirement to sit for the GSQ examination at the end of the first year. In 1973, an independent Faculty of Agriculture was established with six departments of study. The B.Sc. Agriculture degree program was further strengthened by providing field training in plantation management of three months duration, with the assistance of the Ministry of Plantation. Subsequently in 1975, a program of advanced learning under any one of the departments of study was introduced. During this advanced training program, undertaking a research project and submitting a report under the guidance of a member of staff in the faculty was made compulsory for all undergraduates in Agriculture. This student project activity has gradually developed into a strong collaborative link between the Faculty of Agriculture and the other agricultural organizations in the country including state departments/research institutes, private and non-governmental organizations, at present.

Buono is a charming coffee bar tucked away on the first floor of a nondescript building in the heart of Kandy. It's a hidden gem that offers delicious coffee, refreshing lemonades, and delectable avocado toast. Whether you're looking to escape the city bustle or enjoy an authentic breakfast near Kandy Train Station, Buono is the place to be. With its European-style food and cash-only policy, it's perfect for those seeking a budget-friendly yet delightful dining experience.
This place was so nice and cozy. I went here with my friends and we really loved their food. Very delicious. Mocktails and juices were also very good. Place was small but lovely. Chef and the staff were really friendly and helpful. Highly recommend.

A small but charming spot in Kandy! Food tastes great, and the place has a cozy vibe. Prices are a bit on the higher side, but overall a pleasant experience. Would be even better if they add more veg options.
Sajani — Google review
The food is delicious, with plenty of local specialties. The passion fruit iced tea is better than in other places in Kandy! The staff is extremely friendly, and the meals are prepared relatively quickly.
Nicole R — Google review
Buono was one of the best cafés I went to in Kandy. The calm and simple design makes you feel at ease as soon as you walk in. The white walls, warm lighting, and soft background music make it the perfect place to relax and enjoy your coffee. It feels both modern and cozy, which is a nice change from the busy streets outside. The drinks are really the best part here. The coffee I tried all had a rich smell, a smooth texture, and was made with care. The Coconut Coffee was my favorite. It was creamy, smelled great, and had the perfect mix of coconut sweetness and strong espresso. It's cool and different, which is great for Kandy's tropical weather. You have to try the iced version! The desserts and light snacks are also good and go well with the drinks. Everything they serve tastes fresh. The upstairs area is quiet and peaceful, making it a great place to read, talk, or work. The staff is nice and helpful, but the café can get busy, so service can be slow at times. The staff is friendly and really cares about how you feel, which makes the place feel warm. In general, Buono is a great place to get a good cup of coffee, relax, and unwind. If you love good coffee and are in Kandy, don't miss their famous coconut coffee. It could become your new favorite!

Delicious food, very well made coffee. Best coconut latte I've had in Sri Lanka! The friendly staff were so excited to show off their skills in the kitchen and behind the coffee machine. Honestly, we spent a few more hours in here per day than we expected, and came back every day of our trip to Kandy.

Sri Krishna Dosai is a popular eatery located conveniently near the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, making it a great stop after sightseeing. The restaurant offers a variety of authentic Indian dishes at reasonable prices, including crispy cheese kottu and delicious dosas. Despite its unassuming appearance, the food is made with care and served quickly. Visitors can expect courteous service from the attentive staff.
We visited Sri Krishna Dosai in Kandy and it was such a wonderful experience! The dosai was absolutely delicious, fresh, and full of authentic flavor. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service was so friendly that it made us feel at home. We truly enjoyed every moment and can’t wait to visit again. The taste was decent, but prices felt a bit high. We ordered one masala tea but received two, which was not what we asked for. Service needs improvement for a better customer experience.

Tried Masala Dosai and Paper Dosai with plain tea. The dosais were delicious. If you do not like too much sugar with plain tea, better tell them. Otherwise, there is too much sugar in the plain tea. Overall the experience was very good. The environment is very calm. There is even a balcony if you wish to sit and enjoy the view outside. Friendly service too.

This restaurant may look unassuming but the food is spectacular! The dosas are so tasty and just the right levels of spice. Highly recommend the cheese masala dosa and crispy kottu. Would 100% eat here again.

We had an awesome brunch here post loitering around the city centre. Had multiple dosas, wadas and idli, and the care behind each dish was good, along with the taste to back it up. The fact that it's opposite a competitor makes it a bit less popular, but having eaten at both places, this is the clear winner. Definitely recommended.

Nestled within the historic Kandy Kachcheri complex, the International Buddhist Museum stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of Buddhist history across the globe. Opened in 2010 to celebrate the 2600th Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanti, this museum is recognized as the world's first dedicated space for Buddhism. Sri Dalada Maligawa kandy has established the International Buddhist Museum (IBM) to showcase the expand of the Buddhism throughout the Asia and rest of the world. This is the only museum which demonstrates the expanding of Buddhism all around the world. By the 2600th year of the sambuddatva jayanthi, the Buddha dhamma has developed its status from the simple philosophy of the lifestyle of mankind enunciated in early Buddhist thought to highly developed ritualistic religious system. From its birth place, India, Buddhism as a religion, has spread to different parts of Asia, South – East and far East. While the message of the Buddha is currently being perused in the wide context in the modern world. It is interesting to note the different systems followed in the practice of Buddhism, both Theravada and Mahayana, by the respective countries.

The museum offers a great overview of the history, variety, and practice of Buddhism around the world. It's definitely worth a visit, especially when you're in Kandy to see the Temple of the Tooth.
Gayan P — Google review
The International Buddhist Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in Buddhism or Asian history. It's housed in a beautiful Victorian-era building that was once the palace of a Kandyan king, and the exhibits cover the history and spread of Buddhism from its origins in India to its present-day practice in countries around the world. The museum is well-organized and easy to navigate, and the exhibits are well-curated and informative. There are artifacts from all over Asia, including statues, paintings, manuscripts, and textiles. There's also a section on the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, which is particularly interesting given the country's long and rich Buddhist tradition. I was particularly impressed by the museum's collection of Buddhist art. There are some truly stunning pieces on display, including a large statue of the Buddha from Afghanistan and a collection of beautiful Tibetan thangkas. The museum is open daily from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, and admission is SR 2000. It's located in the heart of Kandy, just a short walk from the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Here are some additional things to keep in mind: The museum can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. If you want to avoid the crowds, try to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon. There is no photography allowed inside the museum. There is a gift shop on the ground floor where you can buy souvenirs (reasonable price). Overall, I highly recommend the International Buddhist Museum to anyone visiting Kandy. It's a great place to learn about Buddhism and its rich history and culture.
Monzer ( — Google review

The Queen's Royal Bath, also known as "Ulpange," is a fascinating historical attraction located near the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy. This pavilion, partially situated in Kandy Lake, was used as a private swimming pool for the queens and concubines of the Kandyan kingdom. The beautifully reconstructed building holds great historical significance and is believed to have been originally used for royal bathing purposes.
Kandy Lake, also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk, is an artificial lake in the heart of the hill city of Kandy, Sri Lanka, was built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe next to the Temple of the Tooth. Over the years, it was reduced in size. It is a protected lake, with fishing banned About Area: 19 ha Max. depth: 18 m (59 ft) Basin countries: Sri Lanka Built: 1807–1812

Believed to be the place where the royals used to bath during Kandy era. As per the archeological sources, there used to be an open well of natural spring waters which later was built up as a proper royal pool. The bath was built pre-Kandy Lake where there were paddy fields here. Excavated and reserved under the funds of central cultural fund in 1980s. The authorities have done an excellent job to reinstate the whole building including the wooden doors, windows and the roof to its original status. Entrance is free. Many visitors (specially the locals) don't bother to read and understand the historical value of this landmark. Department of archeology should ideally educate and aware the visitors to Kandy or Dalada Maligawa regarding all archeological sites (including this one) in Kandy by appropriate means e.g. information billboards, videos on social media, at the railway station, entrance of Dalada Maligawa, etc.

What an amazing piece of work for a queen to bathe in. It's an imposing structure at the side of the lake but also plain, and many people walk right past it. I would love to go in if water pollution was not so high. The huge columns and the two levels. One can only imagine what went on in this bath house. Luxury in its time.

🌍 The Queen's Bathing Pavilion, known as "Ulpange," is a significant and captivating attraction in Kandy. Situated near the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, this unique structure is partly in the waters of Kandy Lake and partly on land. It's a beautifully reconstructed building with historical significance. 🏛️ It is believed that this building was originally used for the Royal Queen's bath, adding a fascinating layer of history to the location. 🏞️ The architecture of the Queen's Bathing Pavilion is distinct and contributes to its overall charm. 🏊‍♀️ The water pool measures 19 meters in length, 9.4 meters in width, and 3.15 meters in depth. Originally, it was more like a footpath, but during the British colonial period, a two-story building was constructed over it. 📸 There are picturesque spots on the top floor where you can take photographs with a view of the lake. Best of all, you don't need to purchase tickets to enjoy this attraction. 👥 It's not overly crowded, making it an ideal place to explore and appreciate the history and architecture. 👍 If you found this review helpful, please mark it as such to encourage more elaborate reviews that help others discover and appreciate wonderful places! ✅

This historical monument is the royal bath house where the spouses of Sri Wikrama Rajasinha, the last king of the Kandyan kingdom is said to have used this beautiful, perfectly preserved location for bathing purposes. This premises is also said to have fresh water resources even before the adjacent lake was built. Covering 16.8 perches of land and water, this was built on the commission of the last king of Sri Lanka, Sri Wikrama Rajasinghe (1798-1815) in 1806 and was designed by the then Royal architect Devendra Mulachari. ( දේවේන්ද්‍ර මූලාචාරි ). In 1857, during the English colonial rule, the pool was drained , filled and used as a library and again later converted and preserved as a swimming pool ! When in the sacred city of Kandy, Sri Lanka this amazing piece of architecture is a must-see. 19 meters long and 9.4 meters wide the pool is 3.15 meters deep. Originally a single story building, it was upgraded to two during the British rule. Gazetted as a protected monument in 1971.

This building was supposedly where the Kandyan Queens and presumably their ladies-in-waiting had their baths in seclusion. Sadly, this historic building has been under reconstruction and restoration for almost 2 years with the masses of people walking past and dropping their garbage without understanding its significance to their history.

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled just 3 kilometers from the Kandy Railway Station, the British Garrison Cemetery is a poignant piece of history that offers a serene escape in the bustling city of Kandy. Established in 1817 after British forces took control of the area, this cemetery serves as a final resting place for 195 British nationals who passed away during their time in colonial Sri Lanka. The tranquil grounds are adorned with headstones that tell stories of lives lived and lost, some even detailing their causes of death.
Located just a short walk away from The Temple of the Sacred Tooth, entering the British Garrison Cemetery is like entering another world. I don’t mean leaving the world of the living, but a world of calm and quiet. More likely than not, you will be the only visitor and you can walk around the grounds reading the tombstones and discovering what life might have been like for the 195 people buried there. During your time at the cemetery you will in all likelihood meet the young caretaker of the cemetery Harsha. He is very knowledgeable about everything that is there in the cemetery and can guide you through the tombstones sharing information about each. The British Garrison Cemetery in Kandy is maintained by The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).

British Garrison Cemetery British Garrison Cemetery (also known as the Kandy Garrison Cemetery) is a British cemetery in Kandy, Sri Lanka, for British nationals who died in Ceylon. It was established in 1817 just after British captured the Kandy and closed in 1873 due to a ban on burials within the municipal limits, although special provision was given to allow the burial of relatives of those interred in the cemetery, with last person buried there being Annie Fritz in 1951. The cemetery contains 195 graves of men, women and children. The most common causes of death were tropical diseases such as malaria and cholera. The cemetery was restored in 1998 using financial contributions from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is currently maintained by a group called 'The Friends of the British Garrison Cemetery in Kandy'. The cemetery is located within the land of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, the cemetery is maintained by the British while the Diyawadana Nilame and the Chief Prelates maintain the land.

We visited there recently on our trip to Kandy. It was well maintained and easy to access. I suggest you to go there before 12 noon on weekdays. If the gates closed ask the nearest building so they will come and show you around. There’s the tombs of then governor’s wife , John Doyle, the founder of Cargills group , the elephant hunter who died from a thunder light and others. There’s tomb from aged three months to elders. There’s approximately 150 tombs and more than 400 people burried there.Such a calm and quiet place.

The garrison cemetery is a small cemetery that holds the graves of many, mainly colonial british, men, women and children. The cemetery is maintained by the UK ministry of defence/the commonwealth war comission through the caretaker, Mr. Charles Carmichael and his assistant, Mr. Harsha Kumara Herath. Both are very happy to provide tours of the cemetery, for free (just enter the chapel/museum near the entrance). If you want, you can donate at the end of the tour, which we did, but we certainly didn't feel pressured. Harsha knows quite a bit about the place and background history and is very enthusiastic about the cemetery. At the same time he seemed saddened that other guides take tourists here that don't know much about the place and even charge money for it.

We stopped here to have a quick look at the British Garrison Cemetery on our walk around Kandy Lake. The cemetery was very peaceful and beautifully maintained. We were the only people there and the current caretaker Harsha came and greeted us. He then proceeded to give us a guided tour of the cemetery going into the history and stories behind the people buried there. He was very knowledgeable and it was a pleasure to listen to him speak. He then showed us the small little museum which contains newspaper articles and photos. Would highly recommend calling in here and hopefully being able to meet Harsha.

St. Paul's Church in Kandy, Sri Lanka, holds significant historical and cultural value. The church was constructed in the mid-19th century and has undergone several expansions since then. It stands on sacred grounds near the Temple of the Tooth and features Neo-Gothic architecture with Victorian interiors, including intricate tapestries, teakwood carved panels, and a stunning stained glass window.
Nestled in the heart of Kandy, Sri Lanka’s picturesque "Hill Capital," St. Paul’s Church stands as a testament to the island's rich colonial history and religious diversity. Sharing a boundary with the revered Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa), this historic church adds a unique dimension to the spiritual landscape of Kandy. The inception of St. Paul’s Church dates back to 1825, sparked by the visit of the second Bishop of Calcutta, the Rt. Rev. Reginald Heber. This visionary visit set the stage for the church's construction, which began in 1843. The cornerstone was laid on the 16th of March, 1843, by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Spencer, the Bishop of Madras (now Chennai). Although still under construction, the church opened its doors for worship in 1846, providing a sanctuary for the local community and British regiments, notably the 15th and 37th Regiments. The church was formally consecrated on St. Paul’s Day, 25th January, 1853, by the first Bishop of Colombo, the Rt. Rev. James Chapman, and was aptly named “St. Paul’s.” The building itself, constructed entirely of terracotta brick, exudes a timeless elegance that has endured for generations. One of the most striking features of St. Paul’s Church is its magnificent stained glass window, a gift from the widow of Laurence St. George Carey, a tea planter on Le Vallon Estate, Pupuressa, in 1874. This exquisite window, depicting the Crucifixion, the Ascension, the Angel in the Tomb, and the Nativity, was erected above the High Altar, enhancing the church's beauty and spiritual ambiance. Another notable aspect of St. Paul’s Church is its historic pipe organ, which significantly enriched the quality of worship for over 125 years. Despite experiencing frequent breakdowns and a period of silence, the lower keyboard was diligently restored, allowing the organ to play until it was ultimately replaced in 2009. St. Paul’s Church is not just a place of worship but a living museum of history, art, and architecture. Its intricate stained glass windows, robust terracotta brick structure, and the resonant tones of its once-majestic pipe organ collectively tell the story of a bygone era. Visitors to Kandy will find that a visit to St. Paul’s Church offers a profound connection to Sri Lanka's colonial past and a deeper appreciation for its cultural heritage. Whether you are a history enthusiast, an architecture aficionado, or a spiritual seeker, St. Paul’s Church is a must-visit destination that promises to leave a lasting impression.

A lovely church that's sitting in Kandy near the Tooth relic temple. Peaceful and simple are my words to describe it. I asked for permission before clicking pictures here and the stained glass windows have my heart. Lot of history to the church can be found on the walls inside the church. Overall a nice visit. They even have live performances on Saturdays with three prayer rounds with live choir. One must visit this place that's very easy to reach to and as I mentioned it's near the Tooth relic temple, one can visit both on their tour to sri Lanka..Kandy. There's a good coffee shop too nearby, rather opposite to the church where the cars are packed. It's the best way to spend a few hours praying to the deities and then having some coffee to unwind and head to the next stop.

St. Paul’s Church is a beautiful Anglican church located near the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It was built during the British colonial period in the mid-19th century and is known for its charming Gothic-style architecture, stained glass windows, and peaceful atmosphere. The church’s red-brick structure and wooden interior give it a warm, historic feel. It continues to serve as an active place of worship and a symbol of Kandy’s colonial heritage, attracting both worshippers and visitors interested in history and architecture

St. Paul's Church was built in 1853 during the British colonial era. It is an Anglican church belonging to the Church Of Ceylon, Diocese of Kurunagala. Displaying Neo-gothic architectural features, this church adds a warm and peaceful ambience to the cityscape. Located on the Deva Veediya adjacent to the Naatha Dewalaya premises of the Temple of the Tooth relic in the World Heritage city of Kandy in the Central province of Sri Lanka. Must-visit.

I used to attend St Paul's, in 1964-66, when I worked at then University of Ceylon, Peradeniya Campus. Then my father and my elder sister's family moved to Kandy. They attended St Paul's and my sister still attends, St Paul's. My father (G.S.Peter) served as a Treasurer for a long time and when he retired my B.I.L. (Michael Fernando) took over from him. My sister (Pushpa Fernando) served in the Mothers Union for a long time. My sister still lives in Kandy and attends St. Paul's. Please remember all of them in your prayers and please stop by and say a Prayer at St.Paul's. I live in USA now; but the memory of that beautiful Church, the Peace and a place to kneel down and say a prayer in the busy City still lingers in my soul. Please, stop by and Pray for your self and for all who visits and attendants this beautiful place of worship. The peace and serenity of this magnificent place will touch your soul to remember St. Paul's for a life time. God Bless.

St. Paul's Church, Kandy is an Anglican church built in 1853 in british colonial architecture which is significant masterpiece of rich architecture and cultural harmony as it is surrounded by the Temple of Tooth land. Has a nice stain glass in the main alter and has a big old pipe organ which is usable to date. No tickets needed to visit this place, however photography is not allowed within the premises.

Anglican Church situated next to Sri Dalada Maligawa , one of the six pipe organ can be seen in this church.

Very peaceful place to be in Kandy. The pipe Organ was something fascinating for me. Though heard so much about it, was my first time seeing one in real. The church doesn’t require any entry tickets and is open to anyone.

Nestled just 5 km from the bustling Kandy Railway Station, the Commonwealth War Cemetery, also known as Kandy War Cemetery, stands as a poignant tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the World Wars. This serene burial ground is located on Deveni Rajasinghe Mawatha and serves as one of Sri Lanka's most significant war memorials.
A very well-kept war cemetery looked after by the Commonwealth War graves commission. British, Sri Lankan, and other allied resting places from WW2 of all faiths..

Well maintained cemetery. Very clean and peaceful. Thanks to the commonwealth committee which maintain this place. Place has no guards no security but with full of greenery and flowers. I really loved this place. I hope this beautiful place will remain like this forever. I loved to see my country's men's memorial here.

A hidden gem, missed by most of the visitors to Kandy. This commonwealth war cemetry is very well landscaped and maintained. The names of service men who lost their lives during the second world war are engraved on the headstones. A beautiful and queit place to visit for all nature and history lovers. Parking is available outside the cemetery premises by the road.

Commonwealth War Cemetery, a very interesting, peaceful and well maintained place for the soldiers of the British empire killed in World War II.
Fun S — Google review
Explore the War and Garrison Cemetery two beautiful cemeteries in Kandy offering an interesting contrast. The War Cemetery is serene and incredibly well-maintained and celebrates lives known and unknown lost during the war. The older Garrison Cemetery honours the history of men, women and children buried far from home. 1.5km (1mi.) beyond the entrance to the Peradeniya Botanical Garden is the Kandy War Cemetery maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. 196 Allied officers and men from seven nations during World War 2 are buried in this sacred place. During World War 2 Kandy was an important centre and the headquarters of the South East Asian Command from April 1944. Admiral Lord Mountbatten was the Supreme Allied Commander coordinating the land war against the Japanese. A second older cemetery is the British Garrison Cemetery located within the compound of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Between 1817 and 1873 this was the town’s main burial ground for British nationals. The cemetery was restored in 1998 and is definitely worth exploring with the caretaker who is a fascinating guide pointing out the more unusual ways people came to the cemetery, including death by an elephant, being impaled by a stick when dismounting a horse and having a house collapse on them. There is a small museum attached to the site. Kandy War Cemetery is officially open every day between 07h00-16h00 but in practice, your &BEYOND guide will always ring ahead. Outside of these hours, the cemetery is locked. Wheelchair access is possible via the main entrance. The British Garrison Cemetery is open from 08h30-17h00 every day

This cemetery is very well maintained by the cartaker. He is such a good persona and has a sound knowledge about the history of this place. This place is owned and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The is the final resting place of the soilders who fought for the World War I and II. These tombstones belong to the soldiers of tri forces namely army, navy and air force who served for the British Empire during the war era. There are around 200 tombstones which belong to the soldiers from different nationalities. You are able to find their nationalities along with their names and the particular force they served for through the engraved letters in their tombstones. There are soldiers from Britain, India, East Africa, Sri Lanka and etc. This place has a peaceful, very calm and melancholy environment that is only specific to this place. No parking is available yet you can find a parking space nearby. The place resides somewhat far from the center. But still it is worth to spend your time and effort to visit the place and to remeber and light a candle for those who offered their lives for others during that war period.

Mandiya is a hidden gem in Kandy, Sri Lanka, offering authentic and delicious home-cooked Sri Lankan cuisine. The restaurant is tucked behind a shopping center and may be slightly tricky to find, but the effort is well worth it. Visitors rave about the friendly service and highly recommend trying the rice and curry dishes. The beef curry is particularly praised as a standout dish. Some even express their willingness to return just for another taste of the amazing food.
Warmest Meal in Sri Lanka Mandhiya Mandhiya was hands down one of the best food experiences we had in Sri Lanka. Unlike most touristy places that served cold or bland meals, the food here was fresh, hot, and full of flavor. It felt like a proper home-cooked Sri Lankan meal comforting, balanced, and made with love. The curries were spot on, the sambols added the perfect kick, and everything was served with warmth and care. If you're looking for authentic local food that actually tastes like home, this is your spot. Can’t recommend it enough

Small family run business with delicious food. Only three tables next to their open air kitchen. When we sat down we were given the choice of rice and veg curry or could have it with chicken or fish. The food had lots of flavour and one of the best meals we've had in Kandy and Sri Lanka. Great for vegans, affordable prices and a wonderful experience.

Guests have praised the hotel for its immaculate rooms and thoughtful touches, such as beautiful bed decorations for special occasions. The hotel's prime location offers breathtaking vistas of Kandy Lake and the iconic Temple of the Tooth, just a short stroll away. Visitors can enjoy spacious accommodations equipped with modern amenities, ensuring a relaxing stay. The attentive staff, including notable mentions like Mr.
I had the pleasure of staying at Oak Ray Heritage and I must say it was a truly delightful experience from start to finish. From the moment we arrived, the staff greeted us warmly with genuine smiles and efficient service. The check-in process was smooth, and we were guided to a beautifully kept room that was both elegant and comfortable. The room was spotless, spacious, and thoughtfully designed with modern amenities. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the large windows offered a stunning view of the surrounding scenery. Housekeeping maintained everything impeccably throughout our stay. One of the highlights was the delicious food served at the hotel restaurant. Each meal was freshly prepared, well-presented, and full of flavor — a perfect combination of local and international cuisine. The facilities were top-notch — especially the swimming pool, which was clean, serene, and perfect for relaxation. The peaceful ambiance around the hotel added a lot to our overall comfort. What truly stood out, however, was the hospitality. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we felt welcome and well taken care of. Their professionalism and friendliness made our stay memorable.

Terrible experience! Sugary welcome drink with awful taste, double deluxe room was just twin beds pushed together. Complimentary birthday cake was inedible. No breakfast buffet as promised, and very limited food options. Clean rooms but charged extra for water bottles. No bellboys, no warm welcome, and poor customer service overall. Definitely not worth the stay!

I had a truly memorable experience at Oak Ray Heritage Hotel in Kandy. The service was excellent and the management was very professional and accommodating. I hosted a special evening event there, and everything was arranged perfectly. The view from the hotel is absolutely stunning—especially at night, creating a magical atmosphere for any gathering. Highly recommend this place for both relaxing stays and private functions. Thank you to the entire team for making it such a wonderful experience!

Yesterday and the day before, I stayed at a hotel in Kandy called Oak Ray Heritage. From the very beginning, a person named Mr. Danushka guided me — he was superb. He gave me exactly the type of room I wanted, one with a nice view, and kept it on hold for me. They provide 24-hour customer service and treat customers with great respect. There were absolutely no shortcomings — everything from a toothbrush to other necessities was supplied without any issue. The staff were also extremely friendly. It’s a place where anyone can stay alone without any fear. I too stayed without fear as a solo traveler, and it’s also a place where even a girl traveling alone can stay safely.

I attended my friend’s wedding at Orkray Heritage Hotel today, and it was a terrible experience. The wedding was scheduled to start at 9.00 AM. By 10.45 AM, the venue was still not ready. The reception area was incomplete, tables were not set up, and it was clear that nothing was prepared properly. The hotel staff were completely unorganized and unprofessional. No one took responsibility for the delays or the mess — they simply ignored the situation. Very bad hotel. Poor hotel. Zero management. No one should ever choose this place for a wedding. Do not trust them with your special day. This kind of careless service is unacceptable for any event — especially a wedding. I strongly do not recommend this hotel to anyone.

*Review of Oak Ray Heritage Hotel: A Wedding Ruined by Poor Management My friend’s wedding at Oak Ray Heritage Hotel was an absolute disaster, and the hotel’s lack of responsibility and professionalism was shocking. From poor timing to zero accountability, they turned what should have been a joyous celebration into a stressful nightmare. 1. Terrible Timing & Disorganization The event was severely delayed due to the hotel’s mismanagement. The staff failed to coordinate properly, leaving the wedding party and guests waiting unnecessarily. Key moments, like the tea table, were thrown off schedule, making the entire event feel chaotic. 2. No Responsibility or Assistance Instead of stepping up to fix their mistakes, the hotel staff were indifferent. The bride’s sister had to sweep the floor herself because the venue was not properly cleaned, and guests were forced to move tables due to poor setup. It’s unbelievable that a supposedly professional hotel left guests to handle basic arrangements. 3. Unacceptable Service for a Wedding A wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and Oak Ray Heritage Hotel completely failed in delivering even the most basic standards of service. The lack of attention, poor coordination, and refusal to take accountability show a severe lack of professionalism. Avoid for Weddings! If you’re planning a wedding or any important event, do not trust Oak Ray Heritage Hotel. Their incompetence and refusal to take responsibility ruined my friend’s special day. Save yourself the stress and choose a venue that actually cares about its guests. Would not recommend to anyone.

Utterly Disappointing - Ruined My friend Wedding Day ★☆☆☆☆ (1 Star) Oak Ray Heritage completely failed us as a wedding venue. Their inability to manage timing and total lack of professionalism turned what should have been the best day of there lives into a stressful, chaotic nightmare. Time Management Was Disastrous: - The ceremony started over 45 minutes late because staff were unprepared and disorganized. - We witnessed staff laughing behind the curtains when bride's elder sister sweeping floor for them. There wedding day was irreplaceable, and Oak Ray Heritage ruined it through sheer incompetence. They ignored schedule, provided zero leadership, and showed no regard for there investment or emotions. Do not risk your special day here. Strongly advise looking elsewhere.

I recently visited The Whizz for lunch and tried their Vegetable Cheese Macaroni. The portion size was generous, which I appreciated. However, the dish was slightly too salty, and the white sauce tasted more floury than cheesy, perhaps a better cheese-to-flour balance would improve the flavor. The ambiance of the place is fairly average. One safety concern worth noting: there’s a low, exposed edge on the fifth floor that feels a bit risky. I’d recommend being cautious with your belongings, especially mobile phones near the table edges to avoid accidental drops.

Wouldn’t recommend this place at all. The only thing that was good were the drinks. We went on a friday night and over half the menu items weren’t available. Out of the available items we ordered the cheese bacon kottu which was actually chicken bacon (not disclosed earlier! ) and was overpowered with cabbage. We also order the loaded fries ( which claimed to have mozzarella cheese) Which was just basically drowned in ketchup and mayonnaise. The only burger available was the crispy chicken burger which had a dry bun, dry chicken and again was drowned in the same mayonnaise and sauce. Their drinks were their only saving grace

have very beautiful view of Hanthana mountain range. The food does not have a special taste but is reasonable for the price. The special thing is that the customer service was in a very poor condition. We went here and waited for more than 20 minutes until we got the menu. Finally, I had to go and get the menu myself.

Last night, I enjoyed dining at Whizz, a gem of a restaurant renowned for its breathtaking rooftop setting. The experience was magical, with the panoramic mountain views providing a spectacular backdrop to an already remarkable evening. As I arrived just before closing time, the attentive staff promptly assisted me in placing my order – a testament to their efficiency and dedication to customer service. I opted for the submarine, which was a delightful choice. The flavours were perfectly balanced, and the presentation was exquisite, enhancing the overall dining experience. The restaurant's ambience, especially under the starlit sky, added an extra layer of allure. It's a fantastic spot for those looking to enjoy a serene evening with a picturesque view. In summary, Whizz offers an unforgettable rooftop dining experience. Its combination of stunning scenery, delectable cuisine, and exceptional service make it a must-visit destination. It is highly recommended for anyone seeking a unique dining adventure.

It is not just a tourist attraction but truly a natural treasure that leaves you feeling inspired and peaceful.

This garden or gardens as the name suggests spans over 146 acres. It's massive and for my injured foot this was a huge task to complete. But I'm proud that I finished half of the garden on my first visit. The entire area is full of trees and birds and monkeys. Ever feel like you need some fresh air, well you'll get a lot of it here. Beautiful scenes, peaceful and clean. The green just gives a sense of immense calmness alimg with the variety of flowers. One must visit this if nearby or if planning to come to Peradeniya.

Lovely place to visit and calm inside the chaos of the city. Its around £10 entrance fee, take water although there is a small cafe at the entrance and a local small canteen inside the park. You can hire a golf cart if you like which is good for people less able to walk around the huge park.

Amazing place and well worth the money. Although it's very crowded at the entrance it's fine once you're inside because the place is absolutely massive. Would recommend to plan at least 3 hours for a nicely paced walk and several breaks to take in the beauty of all the different plants and flowers. There are also several cafes and restrooms around some of which are specialized for foreign visitors.

We were blown away from the size and condition of the garden. Definitely worth every penny. Though important thing to note is you will need around 3/4 hours to walk around. Theres also an option of renting a ride(driver) that takes you around. There are 3 or 4 options depending on how many people you have and prices are relatively cheap for instance for 2 people its 1300 rupee

It’s a peaceful escape just outside of Kandy, filled with a vast collection of plants, flowers, and towering trees. The orchid house is a highlight, along with the massive fig tree and palm avenues that are perfect for photos. It’s clean, spacious, and great for a relaxing walk or a family picnic. The ticket for 4 adults it’s 13,300. U can basically finish off all ur debts by just Saturday and Sunday, the garden charges over 3k just for a few minutes of flower and grass. All just for few clicks of pics. I don’t agree with it at all. We did a u turn and got out of there. Thanks and do better. <3

Botanical garden
Double Coconuts Avenue, also known as දෙබිඩි පොල් මාවත, is a stunning location where the magnificent Double Coconut Palm, or Coco de mer, can be found. These endangered and protected plants are native to Seychelles and produce the largest seed in the plant kingdom, weighing up to 20 kg.
Double Coconut Avenue, located inside the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kandy, is a fascinating section where various types of coconuts, including the rare double coconut palms, are planted. The double coconut, known for producing the largest seed in the plant kingdom, adds a unique charm to the avenue. The trees here stand tall, with wide, impressive fronds, creating a shaded walkway. This part of the garden showcases the diversity of coconut species, offering an educational and scenic experience. The combination of the towering palms and the serene garden environment makes it a peaceful and beautiful spot to visit.
Shabeer H — Google review
Double coconut or sea coconut is the world's largest seed. It is native to Seashells island in indian ocean. The trees here were first planted in mid 19th century. These trees grow very slow. A coconut takes 10-15 years to grow. So older trees here are more than 150 years old. The older trees look like they are at end of their lifespan. When I was small these coconuts looked humongous. Now they are not as large as I remember them.

At the heart of the great lawn in Peradeniya garden stands the magnificent Giant Java Fig Tree, also known as Ficus benjamina. This century-old tree boasts an impressive canopy that spreads wide, resembling a colossal umbrella from afar. Its sprawling branches cover a significant area, creating a captivating sight for visitors. Despite its age, this fascinating giant creeping tree continues to be a beautiful and must-see attraction within the garden.
Facinating giant creeping tree. This enormous spreading tree covers a large ground area. When I was little it seemed even more humongous. But now when I visited recently it didnt seem as big as I remember. Anyway a beautiful and must see attraction at Peradeniya garden.
