Place of worship
Mahamuni Pagoda, located in southern Mandalay near the airport, is a revered temple complex and an important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Myanmar. The main hall houses a giant 3.8m Buddha statue adorned with gold and precious stones, which only men can approach to cast gold on the statue. The pagoda also contains two much-venerated images, including the Mahamuni Image brought from Rakthine State in 1784.
Wonderful place in Mandalay where rich in culture and you can visit the museum in a separated building. Feel so calm and happy to be here during new year time.

This is a major pilgrimage site, located southwest of Mandalay, Myanmar. The Mahamuni Image, originally came from Arakan is enshrined in this temple and is highly venerated. According to legend, Buddha himself visited the Dhanyawadi city of Arakan in 554 BC. King Sanda Thuriya requested that an image be cast of him. Once complete, the Buddha breathed upon it, and thereafter the image took on his exact likeness.
CK C — Google review
Beautiful place but very badly damaged during the recent earthquake. Reconstruction however is in full swing, but large parts of the temple complex are currently not accessible. Also the fish pond got a big hit during the EQ, and all the fish have died. Very friendly staff who are happy to explain things to you. Despite the damage still very impression, don't forget to look up once in a while as the ceilings have the most beautiful elements of the whole temple.
DS D — Google review
The Pagoda is clean and exquisite. You can pray and donate. You can also feed to fish and tortoises at garden in this pagoda area. Be aware that one cannot wear shorts or skirts, dresses to visit. Bring a longyi for ladies or long pant. I didn't see any panhandlers near pagoda area at this time and people are no longer bothered for this.

This is an amazing temple to be in. There is a K5000 entrance fee for foreigners. This temple has got so much gold in it's interior and exterior that it looks so magnificent. Here, you get to witness devout worshippers apply gold leaf on the buddha statue. There's a video live stream as well as women are not allowed near it. There's also a bronze statue museum on-site with English explanations and an art gallery which details the faith in Myanmar. Would definitely recommend a visit here.
Samuel S — Google review
My first stop in Mandalay was here at Maher Myat Muni Pagoda. As always you must leave your shoes, etc. and walk barefoot. You walk past many merchants selling goods before getting to the pagoda. Here you must pay camera fees, but they don't apply to mobile phone cameras. Here only males can enter the central area with the big Buddha statue. I was ask by a local woman to present an offering on here behalf which is common.
Blair — Google review
Wow, what an interesting place. Unfortunately, you can't actually see the gold leaf Buddha, but they do have pictures of it at various years going back to 1935 so you can see the transition as it gets more and more gold leaves on it. The surrounding building is pretty impressive too. It seems to be a very holy place for people so please be respectful here.

In the compound of pagoda, the landscaping is very nice and relax place. The flowers are also so beautiful.

King Galon Gold Leaf Workshop

Manufacturer
When visiting Mandalay, a trip to the King Galon Gold Leaf Workshop is a must for anyone interested in traditional craftsmanship and local culture. This workshop showcases the intricate process of creating gold leaf, from beating and cutting to packing. The pure gold leaves produced here are used in various ways, such as adorning Buddha statues and crafting lacquerware.
When you travel through Myanmar and visit pagodas you will have come across gold leaf vendors. This workshop produced them. Staff explains the extremely laborious and time-consuming process of turning gold strips into super-thin gold leaves and of manufacturing bamboo paper. The leaflet for 1,000 MKK describes both processes and it comes with a gold leaf.
René S — Google review
Traditional gold workshop, where you can examine how gold plates are being flattened to be used for decoration or offerings later on. You can see the craftmen working with hammers, and the staff is exceptionally kind and helpful, speaking fluent English. They will tell you about the work process and the possible uses of the golden leafs - of course you can buy many different jewelry, decoration or simply gold.
Gergő S — Google review
Quite an interesting place where you can see the gold leaf making. From the process of making bamboo sheets to making gold leaf and then preparing stacks, all of it can be seen here. You can shop some souvenirs as well.
Nidhi G — Google review
Interesting place to learn about the gold leaf making process. The staff are friendly and one of them put gold leaf on our forehead while we were visiting the workshop. I guess it means good luck!
Ceci T — Google review
Very interesting place to visit and staff were both informative and helpful. Bought a small piece of jewellery as a memory of Mandalay.

Very interesting place in central Mandalay. This workshop specialize in handmade traditional golden leaf production, which are used in covering different things especially Budda figures in stupas and monasteries (in the traditional way by Myanmar's people). However You can find other souvenirs covered in gold. The nice place to see if You come by this district (there are other similar workshop in this area).
Cezary K — Google review
A fascinating look at an age old technique for making gold leaf. It will blow your mind when you see the effort required to produce one tiny sheet of gold leaf and then you think of the sheer volume of gold leaf needed for just one pagoda or huge Buddha statue.
Jane W — Google review
You will see how difficult to make the gold leaves, it is physically intensive.

The Jade Market in Mandalay is a bustling hub for traders selling locally mined jade stones and jewelry. It's known as the center of the jade trade in Myanmar, offering visitors a glimpse into the world of precious stones. The market operates differently from traditional markets, with buyers seated while vendors roam about. Visitors can witness the cutting and polishing of jade just outside the market, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
It's worth strolling around for an hour or so in the market. They charge a small entry fee in the morning hours (when most of the activity is going on). If you're a penny pincher, go in the afternoon (less to see), or walk around the market, where you can also see people working on and trading with jade.
Zoltán S — Google review
I guessed it is not that suitable for consumer as the market is trading on raw Jade. We have no idea how to quantify the value or these stones.
Donald N — Google review
Excellent place to buy all types of jade rough and finished products at very attractive prices indeed. Many teashops snacks gem equipment there is a bonus gem market behind the jade market trading Mogok gems at good prices too. A gem lovers heaven 🤩
Akbar K — Google review
very interesting, real Burmese life, almost no tourists
Anna K — Google review
Interesting market to see how people trade in jade. Be sure to go before 10am to catch the action. There's a paid area for foreigners to enter and it is where the serious trading takes place. Bought myself some jade items at rock bottom prices, like a jade beaded bracelet at 5,000 ks. But in general, do not buy unless you have asked around a few stalls for price of same item and gotten a general feel of prices. And do not buy any expensive items unless you really know your stones. Some amber jewelry is sold here along with the jade. These are overpriced. The same amber bracelets are sold in Yangon at 10,000 Kyat, so be sure to bargain down the price.
Catherine C — Google review
great experience! really recommend to visit, maybe dont go on a shopping spree unless you are very well informed on how to choose and value gems as you will get schooled. but still amazing to go and learn and experience, you can study lots from the locals on how to value jade but dont put your fresh knowledge to the test on a too high transaction as a couple of hours experience is not enough to really value gems. but the cheaper stones are still a great souvenir! even though its a jade market, you can even find the famous Myanmar Ruby there, but those are super expensive, and if they are not, they are probably of very very very low quality or have been chemically or heat treated to be more beautiful - there for value is even lower.
Boaz H — Google review
Crowded area this is a real Jade market Trade between China and Myanmar Traders
Tootti H — Google review
You can see the treasure of Myanmar(mostly Jade , a few gold smith and silver smith) here. But if you're afraid of the crowded, you can visit to other private shop instead of this. Note that the market closed in Sabbath day of Buddhist (Full-moon day, New moon day , 8 days after full moon and new moon days) , every four days in a month.

The Mahagandayon Monastery, also known as the largest Buddhist monastery in Myanmar, was established in 1910. It serves as a school for young monks and is famous among tourists. The monastic college complex within the monastery is well-regarded. Although it may appear commercialized, it offers an opportunity to observe the daily routines of monks. Notably, there is a daily procession at 10:15 am where they gather for lunch at a common cookhouse.
Mahagandhayon Monastery is one of the largest monasteries in Myanmar, home to over 1,500 monks. It’s a popular stop for tourists visiting Mandalay, and even in the current situation, you’ll likely see other visitors, especially around 10 AM when the monks follow their daily routine of receiving donations and having their meal. The atmosphere is unique, offering a glimpse into monastic life. Many monks are open to conversation, making it a great place for an interesting and meaningful exchange. Definitely worth a visit!
Tibor — Google review
Just a 30 min car ride outside of Mandalay, sits Mahagandhayon Monastery, the largest monestary in Myanmar/Burma. Several thousand, many of them young, monks, live here, spending their time studying and praying. The place is quite busy with tourists, especially during the 10 a.m. alm giving ceremony, when food and other necessities are donated by villagers and tourists alike and monks stand in long lines to receive their lunch. It's commercialised but still a nice place to visit and watch the monks going about their daily routine.
Chiquita M — Google review
Feels very commercialised but still a nice place to people watch (in this case, monks going about on their daily routine). They have this procession that happens every day at 10.15 am where they depart from their dwellings into a common cookhouse for lunch. Over here, I also managed to buy some books on Buddhism written by Burmese monks.
Kw L — Google review
Learned a lot about Buddhism here, after talking to a monk. I traveled to Myanmar to get a peace of mind and visiting this place, helped me to let go and move on. The monk emphasized that Buddhism is not a religion rather, it's a philosophy. My friends and I bought a few of their books, and I find it a good read.
SherryG — Google review
Its very close to U being bridge. 1000 monks gather at the hall during lunch time every day to accept lunch donated by the local people. Visitors can also donate fruits/ snacks, etc to the monks when the monks are walking orderly one by one towards the hall. You can use cell phone to take photos (be respectful) but not DSLR/ professional cameras. Quite a few free roaming dogs in the monastery.
Ceci T — Google review
this is the largest buddhist monastery in Myanmar which was built in 1914. Another name for this monastery is "Mahagandayon Monastery". Best time is to go before 10.30am to watch the solemn ritual.

Shan Ma Ma Restaurant in Yangon is a popular spot known for its delicious Shan-style cuisine, which combines Burmese, Chinese, and Thai flavors. The menu offers a wide range of dishes such as curries, noodles, and salads at reasonable prices. The casual and relaxed atmosphere makes it an ideal place to enjoy a meal with friends or family. This humble brunch locale is famous for its Shan-style dishes, soups, and vegetable offerings like vermicelli salad and avocado salad.
A great place for Burmese curries. Several items for 10,000 KY. I ate there almost every day to try all their different curries.

Shubham S — Google review
Great restaurant with authentic Burmese food. Went to it as a suggestion from the lonely planet guide, the location has changed and is two blocks south of its current location on Google, there is a sign at the old location with it's new address. They have a menu you can order from, as well as a "buffet" of sorts where you can choose what you want from what is there. We ordered the shan noodles (1,500kyats) which were amazing, and got the crispy pork (2,500kyats and totally worth it!) from the buffet area. Very busy and full of locals, definitely worth a visit!
Stephanie R — Google review
Not as great as advertised - we had high hopes but all dashed. Pork fried rice and seafood fried rice was bland. Pork hot plate was horrible - the meat was stale and chewy. The chicken kungpow was too salty. Only the stirfried veggies were good.
Harsh S — Google review
Great experience. Very local place (even if it's popular also with tourists as its referenced on a few guidebooks). Seating (and Kitchen) directly on the road.

Day 2

Proximity is everything
For day 2, we bundled attractions like U-Bein Bridge and Bagaya Monastery and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 7 hours.

U-Bein Bridge

Historical landmark
U-Bein Bridge is a must-see landmark, being the longest and oldest teak bridge of its kind globally. It stretches for 1.2 kilometers and offers a unique experience despite its rickety nature. Visiting at sunset allows for stunning photographs of the bridge. The area can get busy during this time, but it's worth stopping by if you're in the vicinity. Consider taking a boat ride to fully appreciate the beauty of the bridge from a different perspective.
U Bein Bridge is one of the best sunset spots in Mandalay. It gets quite crowded as people gather to watch the sun go down, but the view is absolutely worth it. The best way to see the sunset is from a small boat on the water, where you get the perfect view of the bridge in the foreground, making the scene even more stunning. There are plenty of small eateries around, and even on the bridge itself, making it a lively and atmospheric place to visit. Definitely a must-see in Mandalay!
Tibor — Google review
I went there during sunset time. It was over crowded. Many Monks, Nuns and local were there waiting to see sunset. The bridge is safe to walk on. I took a boat ride when reaching the middle of the bridge. Viewing from the lake at the bridge during sunset is beautiful. There are many small eats at both side of the bridge end.

Quite spectacular sunsets across the lake as you walk over the bridge. Very busy with locals of all ages. Nice way to end the day.
Olu L — Google review
Visiting U Bein Bridge was one of the most memorable parts of my trip to Myanmar. Stretching gracefully across Taungthaman Lake near Amarapura, this teakwood bridge is not just a stunning sight, but also a deeply cultural experience. I went during sunset, and the view was absolutely magical—orange and pink hues reflecting off the water as locals and monks crossed the bridge. The atmosphere was peaceful, yet full of life. Fishermen rowed small boats below, children played along the shore, and tourists quietly admired the scenery. I also enjoyed watching the silhouettes of people walking across the bridge against the glowing sky—it felt like a scene from a painting. The bridge can get crowded, especially in the evening, so I recommend going early to find a good spot for photos. If you’re into photography or want a romantic, picturesque experience, U Bein Bridge is a must-visit.
Nay A — Google review
A wonderful place to see sunset and moon in Mandalay. This beautiful bridge is the longest teak wood bridge in the world. It is also very famous location in Myanmar that you have to go. You can see a lot of local people go there for hanging out with their friends or family. I am really keen on the image of the monks walking on this bridge at sunset, very very impressive.

Bagaya Monastery is an ancient Buddhist monastery in Myanmar, built entirely of teak with intricate carvings and reliefs. The monastery is supported by 267 teak posts, the largest being 60ft high and 9ft in circumference, creating a cool and dark prayer hall adorned with stained timbers inscribed with peacock and lotus-flower motifs. Despite being a popular tourist attraction, it remains a living monastery where novices study geography under globes hung above.
So beautiful So sad that it's just deserted like that. The guard couldn't even find the damn key to let me go inside to see it. But I think the Buddha statues had been removed anyway. The outside carvings are gorgeous. So meticulous
刘Emma — Google review
Bagaya Monastery is a quiet and serene place that is best seen in the afternoon when you can almost have the place for yourself. The teak building with its deep red colors also has elements made of stone. The heaviness of the stone contrasts with the beauty of the wood and the delicate nature of the temple's wood carvings. Some parts of the building are gilded. Others have lost their gold color. The combination of various elements and colors give the building an aura of faded glory. Make sure to go around the building for perspectives of the ensemble that you would miss otherwise.
Georges Y — Google review
The Bagaya Monastery, located in Inwa, Mandalay Region, Burma. This magnificent monastery is also known as Maha Waiyan Bontha Bagaya Monastery. The Bagaya Monastery (Bagaya Kyaung) was built in 1834 during the reign of King Bagyidaw. But it’s actually the second attempt–the original, which dated back to 1593, burned down in 1821. Amarapura, just south of Mandalay City, was the royal capital of Burma during periods in the 18th and 19th centuries. It’s now no more than a township and has long been subsumed as part of Mandalay City. But it’s still quite rural, with what were once opulent stone pagodas and palaces destroyed by earthquakes and now overgrown. The pagoda is made entirely of teak, a timber long prized in shipbuilding and boatbuilding. It’s held up by 267 massive posts of teak, the largest of which is 60 feet high and 9 feet in circumference. The floors and walls are also made of teak. Making this today would be prohibitively expensive even if you could still find solid teak trunks like this anymore.
Happyness R — Google review
Not to be mistaken with Bagaya monastery in Inwa, this is Bagaya Kyaung in Amarapura. It was closed when we visited, as in - there was a barb wire fence around it and it looked like it had been there for some time. Shame, as it looks like an interesting wooden building. There is a small golden pagoda just next to it.

Taung Tha Man Lake, located in Amarapura Township in Mandalay Region, is home to the famous U Bein Bridge. This historic teakwood bridge stretches for approximately 1.2 kilometers across the tranquil lake and is considered the longest and oldest of its kind in the world. Supported by 1000 teak posts, it serves as a vital transportation route for local communities while also attracting tourists who can take boat rides or observe fishermen at work.
The construction was started in 1849 and finished in 1851. Myanmar construction engineers used traditional methods of scaling and measuring to build the bridge. According to historic books about U Bein Bridge, Myanmar engineers made scale by counting the footsteps.

The Swan Oo Pon Nya Shin Pagoda, situated atop Sagaing hill, is a stunning complex known for its beauty. Accessible only after climbing 300 steps, shoes are permitted until just below the monastery. The pagoda offers breathtaking views of the Mandalay cityscape, the Ayyerawadi river which separates Mandalay and Sagaing regions, as well as numerous golden pagodas scattered across the area.
I recently visited Soon Oo Pon Nya Shin Pagoda, one of the most significant and beautiful pagodas in Sagaing. Located on Sagaing Hill, it offers not only religious significance but also breathtaking panoramic views of the Irrawaddy River and surrounding pagodas.
Okka K — Google review
Beautiful pagoda located on top of Sagaing hill. It can only be reached by climbing over 300 steps. However shoes can be worn until right below the monastery. The top offers beautiful views of the Sagaing bridge, Mandalay city and the Irrawaddy river.
Pushan S — Google review
Great views on a nice day. The pagoda has good Buddha life artwork. Also artists around the place selling great watercolour artwork.
Naman T — Google review
This is one of the most beautiful pagoda complex in the region. It is on the hill top and the ourney is so beautiful. The weather should be pleasant of your day trip as it can be hot on a sunny day. There is a lot of shade in the complex. On one side, you can see the mighty Ayyerawadi river separating the Mandalay and Sagaing regions and on one side you can see small and large goldene pagodas spread over the whole region.
Sandeep S — Google review
Set on top of Sagaing Hill, Soon U Pon Nya Shin Paya is not a particularly large or impressive pagoda in the Burmese style. What it lacks in grandeur, it makes up for in its location at the top of the hill overlooking large parts of the surrounding areas. On a good clear day, the view from the pagoda extends for miles. Of particular interest is the very colorful tile work of the terraces, a distinctive gate and an ornate yellow clock tower.
Georges Y — Google review
One of the most popular pagodas in Sagaing Hill, partly due to its prominent position offering great views to the Irrawaddy river and the town of Sagaing below.

Great view on Sagain mountains with all monastaries and river. We took the stairs big effort but worth it you can also go there by car and st down by stairs.

The Best hotel in town. Very friendly and well trained suff. Neat clean and tidy room. Great breakfast. Swimming pool is a but small but that's ok. Rooftop bar on the top floor, crowded in the evening. Overall I am satisfied staying in this hotel, Recommended !!!.

The food and the view is amazing. We can enjoy the breathtaking view of the city by enjoying the refreshing drinks and delicious food from Apex. The bar is located at the top of the Apex Hotel and the entrance is designed with old super mini Italy vintage Car Display, where you can take gorgeous photo.

A little bit high-priced menu but worth for amazing view from one of highest rooftop bar in Mandalay. BTW, unplugged also very nice
Kyaw Y — Google review
Great modern rooftop dining and drinking. Food has western and eastern options and are competitively priced. 8000 kyat for a big margarita pizza. 2000 for rice dishes appropriately. Service was graat and live music until 11. 11th floor is just right for looking at Mandalay life rush past below. Only improvement would be to extend sound system to upper roof but as the hotel was still extending the Sky Bar it may be in the pipeline.

Coffee shop
Moon Cafe is a delightful open-air eatery nestled in Bagan, known for its inviting atmosphere and exceptional vegetarian cuisine. This charming spot offers a diverse menu featuring creative salads that blend unique flavors like lemon and ginger with chickpea paste, alongside the crunch of peanuts or broad beans. A must-try is the tea leaf salad, which combines fermented tea leaves with dried peas, roasted peanuts, lime juice, and garlic—a true taste of Myanmar's culinary heritage.
This place is so cozy and nice place to chill. There is outdoor garden so it's good to sit outside during cold season. The price may seem a bit costly but most of the cafés these days charge almost the same. I love cafés even though I don't drink coffee. But this café has fresh juices. So it's good for people who don't drink coffee. The cakes and bread are also delicious. If you're looking for cozy to chill at café, this café is for you.

Aung Nan Myanmar Handicrafts in Mandalay is a must-visit for those interested in traditional art and culture. The workshop offers a wide range of beautifully embroidered pieces, wood carvings, bronze artifacts, and colorful hand-made puppets. Visitors can witness skilled workers creating amazing wood crafts on-site. While the prices are higher than local markets, the quality is exceptional and worth the investment. The sales staff are not pushy, allowing visitors to browse at their own pace.
Amazing great quality wood cravings and wood craftsmanship. Very reasonable prices, not like in Thailand rips off tourists. I suspect Thailand gets wood cravings from Myanmar because of the low prices and high quality. Must come to see the amazing wood cravings, some workers can be seen working in the shop. Don't miss this place if you are interested in art especially wood arts. The sales staffs are not pushy, they don't harass or even approach me, they just let me browse.
