Banda Aceh in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Banda Aceh, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Banda Aceh offers a rare mix of natural beauty, history, and resilient local culture at the northern tip of Sumatra. Visitors can explore poignant sites related to the 2004 tsunami, such as the Tsunami Museum and the PLTD Apung ship, alongside historic landmarks like the grand Baiturrahman Grand Mosque and colonial-era buildings. The city also serves as the main gateway to the idyllic beaches and world-class diving of Pulau Weh (Sabang). Distinctive Acehnese coffee, traditional markets, and a strong Islamic heritage give the city a character different from most other Indonesian destinations.
With favorites like Ulee Lheue Beach, Rumoh Cut Nyak Dhien, and Lapangan Blang Padang, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Bakso Idaman Barata and Ayam Lepaas so you can get the best taste of Banda Aceh while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Masjid Raya Baiturrahman is a stunning 19th-century mosque in Banda Aceh, featuring brilliant-white walls, ebony-black domes, and a towering minaret. It is a symbol of strength and resilience for the Acehnese people. The mosque's tiled courtyard now has retractable shades for all-weather protection during prayers. Visitors can witness its magnificent architectural style reminiscent of the Taj Mahal in India. Women are required to wear headscarves when visiting.
A very beautiful mosque and very serene. Even though it's a hot day, the floor area of the mosque is not hot as they were made of marble tiles. Lots of group inside the mosque reading and memorizing the Quran. Very nice to hear the rhythm when the teachers and kids reciting the Quran. There's also the minaret which was turned into a small museum. We have to pay to get to the top floor - storey 6th and 7th to take pictures of surrounding areas. Carpark is underground and it's very spacious. This mosque was not affected by the Tsunami flood because it was built quite high about 1m high.
Noorzidah N — Google review
I'm Fallin love with this mosque. With its historical, it's really spiritual message for Islamic people. Unfortunately the toilet are lacking maintenance and the electrical big umbrella are still under maintenance. Hope Aceh people can keep the mosque and still beautifull
Rezza K — Google review
All I can say is this mosque is a sign of miracle. It's a must visit place if you come to Banda Acheh. Truly a beautiful mosque with great architecture and strong structure. The mosque is huge, clean and more importantly very calmful.
Hafizun M — Google review
A very grand and beautiful mosque. There are 2 entrances at the north and south ends of the compound. You are required to take off your footage before entering the compound and you will be given a number tag to retrieve your shoes when you are done. Must go!
Eng L — Google review
tips: you need to take off your shoes before entering the mosque compound. There’s a guy who will pass you a ticket with the tray number. And you should be dressed in covered top and long pants. Masjid Raya Baiturrahman, located in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, is one of the country’s most iconic and historically significant mosques. It stands as a symbol of the spirituality, culture, and resilience of the Acehnese people. The mosque blends Mughal and colonial architectural styles. Its striking black domes are made of hardwood shingles, and the interior features marble pillars, Belgian stained glass windows, and grand bronze chandeliers. The mosque famously withstood the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. While much of Banda Aceh was destroyed, the mosque remained intact and served as a refuge for many survivors, further solidifying its importance in the hearts of the people.
Donovan L — Google review
During my stay in Banda Aceh, I prayed many times at Masjid Raya Baiturrahman, truly one of the most iconic and meaningful landmarks in the city. This mosque is not just a place of worship, but also a miracle of history, as it stood strong during the devastating 2004 tsunami while much of the city around it was destroyed. The mosque is very spacious and beautiful, with stunning architecture and a peaceful atmosphere. Beneath the mosque, there’s a huge underground parking area that can hold hundreds of cars and motorcycles, which makes it very convenient for visitors. If you’re in Banda Aceh, visiting this mosque is a must, for prayer, reflection, or simply to admire its powerful presence and history.
Zakaria F — Google review
It is a large building, but with mostly simple design and decorations on exterior and interior. Relief is mostly cast not carved. More Muslim symbolic than visual appeal. Must cover-up skin to enter grounds. Non-Muslims not allowed in mosque.
Blair K — Google review
Masjid Raya Baiturahman is a must place to visit when you're in Acheh. There's ample parking lots in the basement. The praying Hall is really big.

Museum
Museum Aceh, located on Sultan Alaidin Mahmud Syah Street, offers a rich display of Aceh's culture and history. Housed in a traditional building, the museum showcases various artifacts such as ceramics, weapons, clothing, jewelry, calligraphy, Islamic ornaments, and kitchen equipment. One of its notable exhibits is the Lonceng Cakra Donya bell from the 15th century.
Buildings 🆗 Collections 🆗 People / Staff 🆗 Experience 🆗 Time spent ± 50 mins Please ask for some assistance from the officers, they will give you the tour and explain the whole story behind all the artifacts All the staff are very friendly and helpful 👍🏽 Don't forget to take some pictures in front of Aceh traditional house 👍🏽
Ashwin P — Google review
If international travellers are part of the target to educate people, the museum must improve signage in more than just Indonesian. There are a few posts in English but international guests are mostly left to imagine from the displays or try google translate which become cumbersome. Otherwise ot is a lovely spot to visit to get a sense of traditional archetecture and the diversity of aceh culture.
Kerry M — Google review
Loved the place but it lacks explanations in English. Only had displays in Bahasa. There were some albeit very few exhibitions in English.
Thanakorn A — Google review
Museum aceh is aceh library of history, you can find traditional house models in here and you can see how acehnese live their life in old time. You can also visit the exhibition of aceh artifacts and history belonging. Here you can do photoshoot and else. Some redundency in displays but an interesting way to remind visitors of the impact of the 2004 Tsunami.

Museum Tsunami Aceh is a poignant tribute to the victims and survivors of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami disaster. It stands as a symbolic center in Aceh, commemorating the approximately 170,000 lives lost during the catastrophic event. The museum's design includes waterfalls that replicate the destructive force of the tsunami, providing visitors with a visceral understanding of its impact. Inside, exhibits feature videos and news reports documenting this tragic period in Aceh's history.
Very interesting museum with informative stories during the big Tsunami which destroyed Banda Aceh and beyond. The museum also informed of not only human who helped during the disaster but also animals like the elephants. They were hardworking. We went to all the 3 floors of the museum. Beautiful museum with some areas enclosed and others open. There's also drinks and souvenirs shop, library and other artefacts which was left behind 21yrs ago. There's many visitors so parking is difficult in the building itself, but there's another side parking area that we can park and it cost Rp5000.

Definitely worth checking out when you’re in Banda Aceh. It stands as a solemn yet inspiring tribute to the victims and survivors of the catastrophic 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The building’s wave-like structure and traditional Acehnese motifs reflect both the natural disaster and the resilience of the local culture. Opened in 2009, the museum serves multiple purposes: it is a place of remembrance, an educational hub, and even a vertical evacuation center in case of future tsunamis. Inside, visitors can experience a simulation corridor that recreates the terrifying moments of the tsunami with sound, darkness, and water effects. Exhibits include emotional survivor testimonies, photos, videos, and detailed explanations of the earthquake and tsunami phenomena. A memorial wall lists the names of those who perished, offering a quiet space for reflection. More than just a museum, it is a poignant reminder of the power of nature and the strength of community in the face of tragedy.

Visiting the Tsunami Museum in Aceh was a powerful and emotional experience. The museum is beautifully designed to honor the memory of the 2004 tsunami and the lives it affected. From the moment you enter, the sound of rushing water and the unique architecture create a strong emotional atmosphere. The exhibits are informative and touching, featuring photos, videos, survivor stories, and historical details. It helps you truly understand the scale of the tragedy and the strength of the Acehnese people in rebuilding their lives. The entry ticket is very cheap, which makes it even more accessible for everyone. This place is not just educational, but deeply meaningful. If you’re in Banda Aceh, you absolutely must visit. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.

Touch our hearts if you really explore this museum. Wonderful stories pertaining to the catastrophe. You may need to purchase ticket to enter the museum. Each person is Rupiah 20K for foreigners. There are 3 floors for the exhibition. Each floor full of photos describing the situation and replicas. There is also a room for you to watch the tsunami video for about 9 minutes.
Maliah S — Google review
We visited this museum during morning. It's a huge and the design is beautiful. There were not many people during our visit. This museum illustrated on the huge tsunami tragedy in 2004. There are many artifacts, information, and footage available regarding to the horrific tragedy. It's the close experience from what happened on 2004 where you can see and feel. But ff course it's not the same and you can't compare with the real event. The best thing to do is to take a lesson from what happen and say your prayer for those who lost their life during that day. The museum is clean and the staffs is nice to. Be aware of the operating hour of this museum before coming. Such a wonderful experience and a must visit place for tourist. You are not consider visiting to Acheh if you didn't come to this museum.

Museum PLTD Apung is a poignant reminder of the destructive force of the 2004 tsunami. This former power-supply ship was carried inland by the tsunami and now stands as a monument to those who lost their lives. Visitors can explore the ship, climb aboard, and take in panoramic views of Banda Aceh from its lookouts. The ship was originally meant to provide electricity to Ulee Lhue area with 10.
Its a good place to memorize on how a tremendous things were happened at past where over than 160.000 people were killed by tsunami and for this electricity generator boat weight 2600 tons were dragged up to 5 km from the shore. However it was seems the place is not well taken care off by the management.

It's a museum located quite deep inside the housing area in a form Huge vessel. This is what the 2004 tsunami does to this creature. It is well maintained, changed from a shop to become a museum. A very informative insight from the proof and leftover. The view from the top is also very beautiful. You can see a mosque, a mountain and Acheh town from a far. There are many visitors come here for a visit. Also a must visit spot if you come to Banda Acheh. There are also few small souvenir shops located at the entrance of this Museum. The price is cheap and negotiable compared to what you can find in the town. The service is also good.

Masjid Baitul Musyahadah, also known as Kupiah Meukeutop Mosque, is a unique and active mosque located in Banda Aceh. Its distinctive dome resembles the traditional Acehnese hat called Kupiah Meukeutop. The mosque is always bustling with various activities such as prayers, Quran recitations, and children studying iqra. Visitors can also enjoy free breakfast and coffee after the morning prayer.
Unique mosque with kupiah meukeutop looked like dome. Such a nostalgic mosque for me. And the krueng daroy park beside the river near to mosque just very relaxing and peaceful. Sometimes i rode bicycle there.

Known to the locals as "Masjid Kopiah Meukutop" because of its unique roof, resembling the traditional Acehnese headpiece used in special occasions, this Mosque is a sight ro behold. Mosque facilities are also pretty good and clean.

Noodle shop
Mie Razali is a renowned noodle restaurant and an iconic establishment in Banda Aceh. It is highly recommended for visitors to the city, whether on vacation or visiting family. The restaurant offers a variety of noodle dishes such as fried noodles, boiled noodles, and noodle soup, along with options like rice, martabak, cones, and various beverages.
The Famous Aceh Noodles Shop, if you wonder what its taste like , its almost the same like “chicken Noodle” with alot sauce. But not to spicy 🌶. I suggest you to order “Mie Rusa” or “Mie Daging” for the first time. To quench your thirst, is suggested cold ice tea and “martabe” juice. Price rate is reasonable cheap. Overall tasted really good 👍🏻.
Arno F — Google review
Overly hyped but in reality it's just mediocre. Yes, ex president Jokowi might dine here before, but that's about it. It's just too viral, lots of posting about this place on Google & etc. But I've been to many places that serve better Mie Aceh than here. I do not recommend this place. Also, hygiene is not very prioritised here. Seems like cleanliness is not done properly. Difficult to find parking. The price per noodle is IDR 50K, slightly overpriced. The toilet is very dirty. Service is slow.
Wenny V — Google review
The noodle is just okay. Service is very very slow and they forgot to process our drinks after taking order. Ample carpark space. Lots of other eateries next to each other and around the area.
Noorzidah N — Google review
Though the taste is not to what we expected, it is still a delicious comfort food. We didnt get to try the Crab Mie Aceh as it is sold out.
IUVA S — Google review
We are quite disappointed by the mie honestly. This is our first meal at Banda Acheh and it leave us with a low standard on foods in Acheh. The mie is just average, price is reasonable and the portion is normal. There are a lot of customers eat here and we thought it is marvelous and they are proud with their long existence history and reputation as one of the best mie in Acheh. But yeah it did reach our expectation. The service is also normal take some time for our foods to arrive. The worker is okay and the hygiene of the restaurant can be improved. The restaurant is quite okay if you want to come over and hangout or bring family. Lots of seating available here. Come on, you guys should raise your standard.

The food was great. I ordered Mie Aceh Campur, which has all toppings from beef, shrimp, squid, and a small crab. As in, a whole crab. The portion was good, and the noodle was well spiced. I also ordered cucumber juice, and that was very refreshing, I love it! But..... A bit too sweet. I should have asked for less sweet.

Bread Light is a renowned bakery in Banda Aceh, known for its high-quality breads, cakes, and pastries. The bakery is especially busy during special occasions like Eid celebrations. While the prices may be a bit higher, the quality of their products justifies it. Customers recommend trying their croffles despite them being on the sweeter side. However, it's important to note that cashless payments are only available for purchases above IDR 100k.

Although not very spacious, the space is comfortable for quick visits or takeaway purchases. 📍 Located in an accessible and strategic area. 💰 Prices are reasonable in relation to the product quality and packaging. Note: Some items are best enjoyed when warm. Visiting in the morning or late afternoon may offer more product variety.

Putroe Phang Park, located in the Aceh Province of Sumatra, Indonesia, is a beautifully landscaped park that houses an unusual bright-white royal palace dating back to the 17th century. Originally built by Sultan Iskandar Muda for his empress Putroe Phang from the Kingdom of Pahang, this historical park also features a garden and a mysterious white circular structure called Gunongan. The park offers visitors a glimpse into history and provides picturesque spots for taking photos.

Putroe Phang Park is the park of the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam which was founded by Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607-1636) for his empress Putroe Phang who came from the Kingdom of Pahang. The original name of this park is Taman Ghairah as mentioned in the Bustanus Salatin book. This park was built because the sultan really loved Princess Pahang and so that the empress would not be lonely when the sultan lived the government. The construction of the park is said to have been a request from Putroe Phang, the king's daughter, who was brought to Aceh by Sultan Iskandar Muda after the conquest of the Pahang kingdom. Inside this park, there is the Pinto Khop, a small dome-shaped gate that is the door that connects the garden to the palace. Pinto Khop is a place to rest for Princess Phang, after being tired of swimming, it is located not far from Gunongan, where the ladies wash her hair. There is also a pond for the empress to wash her hair and take a flower bath. Source: Wikipedia

Mosque
Baiturrahim Mosque Ulee Lheue is a significant landmark located at the zero point of the Tsunami, just 60 meters from the beach. It miraculously withstood the devastating 2004 tsunami, with locals recounting that the highest water peak reached its dome without causing any damage. The mosque is currently undergoing renovations to enhance its facilities, including upgrading the ablution area and toilets. Visitors praise its comfortable worship environment, complete with good carpeting and fan facilities.
A grand mosque that was not destroyed by tsunami in 2004. It has large umbrellas like the ones in Masjid Nabawi in Madinah.
Fazilah D — Google review
Baiturrahim Mosque in Ulee Lheue is more than just a mosque — it’s a powerful symbol of survival. It stood strong through the 2004 tsunami and still radiates peace and strength. The vibe is calm, the sea view is amazing, and the architecture is stunning. Whether you’re into history, culture, or just looking for a peaceful spot to pause, this place hits different.
Caca — Google review
Visited Masjid Baiturrahim in Ulee Lheue, Aceh just before Zuhur prayer, and wow—it was super hot! The sun was blazing, and I could feel the heat bouncing off the pavement, but honestly, it didn’t take away from how beautiful and peaceful this place felt. This mosque is famous for surviving the 2004 tsunami when everything around it was destroyed. Standing there, knowing what the mosque had been through, gave me goosebumps. Despite the heat, I took my time to appreciate the architecture and the calm atmosphere. Inside, it was cooler and quiet—such a nice break from the heat outside. I’m really happy I made the visit. Even though I was sweating buckets, the experience was still worth it. The spiritual vibe, the strong historical presence, and the simplicity of the mosque all made it so special. There’s something about being in a place with that much history and faith that just fills you with peace. If you’re in Aceh, don’t skip this mosque—even if it’s hot out! Bring an umbrella or just brave the sun like I did—you won’t regret it. Alhamdulillah for this meaningful stop in my journey.

The surrounding area also features seafood eateries serving fresh dishes from Acehnese waters. With its tranquil and welcoming atmosphere, Ulee-Lheue is an ideal place for travelers seeking peace and unspoiled natural beauty.
Syatria P — Google review
I still remember 17 years ago when I came to this place a week after the Tsunami that devastated Aceh, including this beautiful beach. Now Ulee Lheue has become a favorite place by local residents for leisure, especially in the afternoon until dusk or Maghrib prayer. The view during sunset is really amazing when the position of the sun is between the end hills of Bukit Barisan. The sea waves are not big because the beach is surrounded by breakwaters. So we can take a walk along the white sandy beach, swim or enjoy a duck paddle ride with our partner, family or friends. There are also culinary outlets where the prices for food and drinks are inexpensive. What needs to be fixed here are the problem of garbage everywhere and the orderliness of the vehicle parking.

Actually I tried to visit this restaurant previously, but it is the same like the Mie Razali next store, just always crowded with so many customers. However, I finally and surprisingly visited this place on 2017.05.10, just one day before the 35th Anniversary of Faculty of Medicines, UnSyiah, the international symposium. Together, and invited with all the rest speakers from abroad, we visit this place and had our dinner. The Nasi Goreng with Mutton is the best, or the first time, I've tried in Banda Aceh. And together with the side dishes that they put on the desk, especially, the Ayam Paha, also the shrimp that the Malaysian professor kindly shared with me. This is the restaurant that I will definitely visit again in Banda Aceh.

Solong Coffee Ulee Kareng is a popular coffee shop in Banda Aceh, known for serving the well-liked Ulee Kareng coffee. It's a favorite spot among the Acehnese people, who have a strong affinity for coffee. The shop offers excellent Kopi Sanger and is conveniently located just 13 minutes away from the Baiturrahman Great Mosque.
Kopi yang sungguh enak, very recommended place. The most well-known menu is kopi hitam saring and sanger. Spread around banda aceh, always full of people but still can find seating place. Oh, there are breakfast sellers right in front of the store

This shop sells excellent coffee: Kopi Sanger, commonly found in most shops. It's a passable place for food, but food was not from this shop. Had mee aceh and sate matang. Need to order sides to take with the noodles, although they tasted nice, practically just stir fried noodles with soy sauce and some vegetables. I do like the sate Matang, relatively like satay in Malaysia. However, the meat pieces are rather small. Another is sate Padang, I do not fancy these as the sauce is quite sweet and not much spices. The tables are very old style, nostalgic.

To all coofeeholics, heaven to you all. Relatively expensive but they served nice and fragrance roasted coffee here - choices of robusta and arabica. I tried the pea berry - which is the coffee with strongest caffeine. While pea berry sengar is coffee with a bit of milk. This is the miniature of Aceh which has various ethnic. You will find many kinds of Aceh traditional houses here. Once in a 5 years, there will be held Aceh Cultural festival week that provides cultural attractions from every regions in Aceh. You should come here to see how unique Aceh is.
Lathifa A — Google review
I was here because of Pekan Raya Aceh which is held once in 4 years. The concept is like Taman Mini Indonesia where you can see a traditional house from all across Aceh. And also learn its culture one by one. But when i was there its so stuck people are screamin and we are so hrd to get in or put because its too crowded. Then nothing else to see

Mini park to see Aceh traditional house from all over places
Ibel D — Google review
If you go to Banda Aceh, make time to come here. this venue is usually held for a 5-year event, the Aceh Cultural Week. from 23 City Districts in Aceh will be represented at this event, because there are traditional houses from each City District so it looks like Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in Jakarta. but due to lack of supervision, until I write this review, this place lacks maintenance from related agencies
Wanhar — Google review
I came to this place with my colleague s and friends in Banda Aceh. This is the last day of the cultural event, where each region of Aceh represents, for every five year. That means I am pretty luck to be able to come here and experience it myself for such an event. I find it pretty interesting since it bring different cultural events and objectives, goods and products from different regions of Aceh. Which this kind of activities we now found very rare in Taiwan. The dance performance was super attracting. And the food and coffee, gayo coffee, are the most comforting as always. Today is the last day and today is the closing. You should not miss any chance to visit it! Go! Go! Go! Now.

Banda Aceh does not really have many parks. Unlike others this one is not too crowded, unless an event is being held there. That is the plus point. Other than that, meh.

This place is good but the food quality is too bad, and it supposed to be nice and tasty nothing to compare than other street foods. Guys you will lose your Rate due to foods taste. Its all about culinary so number 1 of all taste must be good.

Delicious foods. However some of the menus took too long to be ready, for instance, Soto Betawi and Sop Iga took nearly two hours, which was too long for any kind of food. And what's more terrible is that when we told the waiter about the problem, nobody seems to care about it.
Lifina H — Google review
More expensive then others The food doesn't worth it Very basic taste and service
Matan H — Google review
It's better to come here for dinner for more food varieties. I came around 12 for lunch and even tho it's written that they open at 11 am, the food still weren't ready so we had limited choices. I had soto betawi and it was pricy as hell. A mere soto for IDR.41k, rice excluded. Really? 😂 Place was nice and looked clean tho.

Kedai Kopi Cut Zein - Forsilakubra (Forum Silaturrahmi Kupi Beurawe) has been a beloved spot since 1945, founded by Zain. It's a cozy place that attracts a steady stream of customers, making it a must-visit destination. The traditional brewing method produces coffee with a rich aroma and a balanced, robust flavor. Alongside the coffee, patrons can savor delicious cakes, crispy snacks, and authentic packed rice.
Venturing here after Subuh prayers, I'm greeted by coffee that speaks volumes of traditional brewing. The aroma is potent, the taste a delicate balance of robust and smooth flavors, beautifully enhanced by the absence of modern machinery. Accompanying the coffee are delightful cakes, crispy fried snacks, and authentic packed rice. Each bite adds a new layer to the delicious journey. The atmosphere is peaceful, creating a soothing retreat where tradition and simplicity reign supreme. This place truly presents an extraordinary coffee experience, delicately wrapped in authenticity.

Nasi uduk restaurant
Nasi Uduk Klapa Gading is a delightful eatery that offers a cozy and relaxed ambiance. However, the parking situation is limited and often crowded. The prayer room, which also provides mukena (prayer robes), is an added convenience for Muslim patrons. The evening atmosphere is slightly dim, striking a balance between brightness and darkness. The sambal served here is particularly noteworthy for its delicious taste.
Great taste of Nasi Uduk, it is better for you to take away, coz there is a few cat in the restaurant that can be disturbance for you while enjoying your meal. However, it has a goog praying room (musholla) for Moslem to pray.

Good location, good taste, and good price. The ayam tangkap is so good. But first you have to order it, they don't serve it automatically like others.

Freshly cooked yummy food! Couldn't stop eating so no time to take photos hahaha. Dessert was pudding in a plastic cup and fresh fruit plate. Not as good as the main dishes esp fried chicken. And fried beef with crispy onions. Carnivores' delight

Title: A Taste of Authentic Indonesia Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Review: Lem Bakrie is a culinary treasure trove where each dish tells a story of Indonesia's rich flavors. From the soul-warming "kuah belangong" to the crispy delight of "sie reboh goreng", every bite is a journey through tradition and taste. The cozy ambiance feels like stepping into a cherished home, complete with the convenience of parking at the back. Don't miss out on the refreshing "asam udeung", paired perfectly with "timun kerok" and "pepaya kerok". For an authentic Indonesian experience that feels like home, Lem Bakrie is the place to be.
