Castles
Palacio de la Magdalena is a historic royal summer residence built in the early 20th century on the Peninsula of La Magdalena, Santander. It was constructed to serve as the official summer residence for the Spanish Royal Family and was designed by architects Javier Gonzalez de Riancho and Gonzalo Bringas. The palace, which cost 700,000 pesetas of 1912, now houses Menendez Pelayo International University and serves as a meeting and conference center.
I would definitely recommend visiting Palacio de la Magdalena. There are 2 options to get here. You can get the train which is part of the Hop on Hop off bus tour. It is included when you buy the ticket for €26pp. or if you were feeling active you could walk it in about 30-40 mins. Beautiful views of the coast once you get the top and of course the huge Palace which was constructed between 1909-1911.
Josh M — Google review
A true gem in Santander! The palace is an architectural marvel with a fascinating history—it served as the summer residence of King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenie. The grounds are stunning, perfect for a peaceful walk, picnic, or just enjoying the views. There’s also a small zoo and playground, great for kids. We walked there (about 35 minutes from the city center), but there’s also a tourist train available. Access to the gardens is free, and guided tours of the palace interior are available and absolutely worth it. Facilities are clean, and there’s a nice café on-site. A must-visit for anyone coming to Santander—beautiful, historic, and family-friendly!”
Unique P — Google review
If you are in Santander, you must visit this place. Besides the beautiful park and the emblematic buildings, the view is absolutely breathtaking. As a recommendation, if you enjoy walking, don’t take the little train to reach the palace. The distances presented by the staff who guide you are exaggerated — the walking times are much shorter.
Alin P — Google review
I enjoyed going to see it but I didn't want to visit inside the palace. I found the outside space very pleasant to walk around and the exterior of the palace is really very beautiful and for those who saw the series Grand Hotel it is really cool to go there.
Luciana C — Google review
Situated on the western peninsula of the bay, this former palace is the centre piece of a beautiful park with an excellent circular walk, lovely beach, great viewing points towards the bay and out to sea.
Mark H — Google review
Super pretty park with picknick area, toilet and view point, you can also find seals 🦭on the left side of the park, they got fresh sea water and seems happy but one of areas looked too small for 3 of them.
Ksenia T — Google review
Really nice walk. It's on a small peninsula from which you have some fantastic views. Beautiful trees and a nice park as well to relax or have a stroll, away from the crowded innercity. There is also a small zoo in the area where we saw some seals.

Grand palace on the peninsula once a fomer royal palace gifted to the king by the people of Santander. A few art insulations surround it.

Nature & Parks
National Parks
Magdalena Peninsula is a historical and scenic destination featuring a palace with gardens, a small zoo, beaches, and a lighthouse. The wide boulevards of the old town offer picturesque views of fishermen along the waterfront. The verdant Magdalena Peninsula provides an opportunity to enjoy the warm sandy shore and experience the ocean. The peninsula also houses the summer residence of King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia, now known as the Palace.
The palacio is open only over the weekends but the surrounding gardens is beautiful and it is open every day till 10. It has sea animals to see and a park. In general amazing views and it’s totally recommend it!
Maria A — Google review
Fabulously picturesque and immensely photogenic, the Magdalena Peninsula was the highlight of my stay in Santander. I wish I had a whole day to spend there and take in all the views. The sunsets there are simply magnificent.
Floyd C — Google review
What a beautiful place to visit even as a tourist. We were travelling with an aged mom and were delighted to hear that she didn't have to walk up the hill to the palace as there's a train (bus) one can hop on that takes a slow trip up the hill. Cost was 5€. The grounds are immaculate and there's benches placed throughout the peninsula where you can sit and enjoy the view. It's a lovely area to stroll around.
Lee-Anne C — Google review
Inside the palace is exquisite and at 3 euros for a guided tour well worth it but the grounds and seascapes are stunning. You can see and hear the power of the waves crashing into the cliffs. A short bus journey (1.30 euros each way) will take you there and entry to the grounds is free.
Lynne F — Google review
Very nice, green and peaceful place! Perfect for a walk! Beautiful places to visit and eat! Surrounded by water with amazing views, and that sound of waves crashing on the rocks, ahh... miss this place!
Elisei P — Google review
The grounds surrounding the Palace are absolutely stunning, with beautiful cliff edges where you can feel the full force of the atlantic wind. The park is really well maintained and is a lovely place to just sit and chill. The actual peninsula is 5 stars for definite, but the park area lacks toilets and amenities. The mini zoo (with sea lions and penguins) seems cruel and unnecessary. The animals don't have much space and some don't seem very healthy, which put a gloomy cloud over what an otherwise lovely trip to the park.
Megan O — Google review
It's very beautiful place. You can go to castle Magdalena or visit mini zoo. Over there is amazing view. You should to visit this place if you in Santander
Oktawia — Google review
The Magdalena Peninsula is a 28 hectare peninsula located near the entrance to the Bay of Santander. The peninsula is a popular recreational destination for both tourists and locals. The historic Palacio de la Magdalena is located on the peninsula, which along with its surrounding gardens, is designated as a cultural heritage site. Also located on the peninsula is a small zoo, three galleons of the Cantabrian mariner Vital Alsar Ramírez and a lighthouse.

Beautiful cozy beach. Might be a bit more rough with more littles stones than the more popular beaches but also less people and more relaxed. Also at some parts of it you have great spots to find some sea shells!

Beautiful beach that looks like a postcard. I went in October when it wasn't crowded at all. Because it's so amazing, expect crowds during the peak season.

When you think on beaches in Spain you probably realize the south or eastern Spain, but this is actually one of the best beaches of northern Spain, and of course, on my opinion, the best of the town indeed the city, unfortunately I was there in the winter time so I couldn’t swim, but believe there were people swimming This area is full of life whole year long they have a great waterfront walk and nice place to take pictures, clean and beautiful landscapes My wife and I made Santa tree one of our stops during our northern Spain road trip and we couldn’t be more satisfied

Low tide in the morning, high tide in the afternoon. All the beaches are connected so you can make a good stroll back and forth.
The F — Google review
A glorious beach with a lot of amenities and supermarkets close by. It has a diverse crowd without too much music or overly quiet. The surrounding area is gorgeous and there are sunbeds if you feel you need one. The sand is gorgeous, the sea is choppy but gradual so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. A very nice hub for people to meet and get some beach time in. I wouldn’t miss this if you are in Santander, probably my favourite area!

We enjoyed this beach area on the Cantabrian Sea in Santander. There is a lovely promenade and walkway along the beach. It has sand (not pebbles) and is flat which is great for walking. It can be quite busy, but as the beach is 80m wide there is plenty of room.

Playa De Somo is a stunning beach located in Santander, offering fine golden sands that stretch across the bay. Accessible by a relaxing half-hour ferry ride, it provides breathtaking views of Santander city and the Peninsula de la Magdalena. The beach is popular among Spanish families due to its wide expanses, amenities, and surfing opportunities. With high waves perfect for surfers and ample space for everyone, visitors can also enjoy long walks with their dogs during specific hours.
Somo beach was a busy and lively beach mainly full of the local atmosphere and people as opposed to the tourist vibe. This meant we enjoyed a peaceful stay on the beach here and it was simply beautiful and worth the boat trip from Santander.
Vin C — Google review
A wide beach with a stunning view, a place from which you can see part of Santander as well as part of the fabulous northern coast! Perfect for those who enjoy the experience of big waves.
Alin P — Google review
Nice wide and fine beach, high waves, perfect for wave surfers. Enough space for everyone and you can walk for long time on the beach to the end and backwards. In the morning and evening it’s also allowed to walk with the dog (until 09AM and after 08PM).
Marc ( — Google review
Astounding sand beach on the east side of Santander Bay. Very fine sand, really wide space and amazing views of the city on the other side. Many surfers ruling the waves. All the parking around is paid and gets extremely crowded during summer.
Alex S — Google review
Probably the hugest beach I’ve ever been? It’s amazing, the sand is very soft and the waves were quite large, some people were surfing.
Dominika N — Google review
Beautiful beach and I went early in the morning to avoid the heavy crowds and to find parking. I recommend this beach and seems like a place to surf as there were many people taking classes there.
Julian G — Google review

C M — Google review
A fantastic and extremely long beach with awesome views across the bay to Santander. Surfers and surfing schools dominate the water and bathers should be aware and careful of being 'surfed over'. The beach forms a peninsula has two beach bars along its length. If you want calmer waters you can swim on the inland side in the ría.

Fine dining restaurant
Restaurante El Serbal is an upscale dining venue located in Santander's Puertochico neighborhood. Since its establishment in 1999, it has earned a Michelin star and continues to impress with its creative dishes made from local ingredients. The restaurant offers a tasting menu as well as an à la carte option featuring dishes like grilled asparagus with prawns and cockles, various cod preparations, and beef tenderloin with foie gras ravioli.
Stunning , innovative , delish. Our waiter was great super friendly and very positive. As Michelin star restaurant tasting menu priced very well.
Lina S — Google review
The restaurant’s location/view are stunning!! Presentation and service on spot. However, we were not too impressed with the food. We thought it was good but it was not Wow. The previous day we had gone to Casona del Judio (also 1 Michellin star) and we were so impressed by the entire experience so we had very high expectations. The food was not bad and some of the dishes were really good but some were not. When you choose your bread, get the corn, it’s delicious.
Monica A — Google review
What an amazing experience from beginning to end. Every element of every dish was well thought out and perfectly executed. The service was also fantastic with the staff being so attentive and knowledgeable. The view of the sea facing the restaurant was the icing on the cake. Thank you for a lovely afternoon. This restaurant must be on everyone's must-visit list on the area.
Serge A — Google review
El Serbal is a great choice for excellent dining, fine wines and the best location experience. Our service was superb while still very friendly and sincere. We dined at lunch and enjoyed the beauty of the ocean and fresh air as we were fortunate for good weather. I highly recommend a visit or two. The tasting menu was just the right amount of food and various flavors.
Audrey N — Google review
Overall, it wasn’t an outstanding dining experience - the food felt fairly basic. While some parts of the set menu stood out with great flavors, most dishes were quite ordinary. The tasting menu is generous though, so you won’t leave hungry. The location is excellent and the service was great.
Roman E — Google review
El Serbal combines Cantabrian cuisine with a modern twist. The tasting menu is a delight, featuring fresh produce and thoughtful presentation. The service is highly professional, and the sea views from the dining room are spectacular. It is ideal for a special occasion.
RJ K — Google review
Amazing food. Must have the wine pairing with the food because it truly elevates the experience. The pork and the tomato dishes were mind blowing.
Brian C — Google review
A first class experience. It was a quiet evening on the day we came, there were only two other tables in use. The staff were so friendly and very professional. Our waitress spoke perfect English. This restaurant absolutely deserves its Michelin star, I could not fault anything. The tasting menu is reasonably priced for what you receive and each dish was immaculate. My favourite was definitely the gyozas, simply stunning. The petit fours at the end were so memorable also. The red jelly-like petit four had a strong aroma that was so captivating, I also really enjoyed how they made use of the tree table decoration to apply the appetisers and petit fours. The bread tray is impressive and a wide variety of breads are available, as well as two complimentary types of olive oil. Upon being seated, we were also offered a complimentary glass of wine on the house, which we thought was an excellent touch. My only complaint was how silent the restaurant was, I think there is a balance to be made, I felt I could hear a pin drop and that was unsettling. I would absolutely dine at El Serbal again, to date, it has been the best Michelin restaurant I have been to.

Situated on the waterfront overlooking the Bay of Santander, Museo Marítimo del Cantábrico is a maritime museum that offers a fascinating insight into the nautical history of Santander. The museum showcases traditional Spanish boats, ship-building techniques, cartography collections, and marine biology displays. Visitors can also explore exhibits about local fishing traditions and industry. Additionally, the museum houses an aquarium featuring marine life from the bay and ocean.
An October visit to this brilliant museum experience. The history of Spain's maritime ventures are there for the visitors to see. Beautiful scale models of sailing ships of the past to recent times. Marine life and many other aspects of the Spanish seafaring history then and now are displayed in such a way to make it a wonderful experience for the visitors . I will return.

We really enjoyed this museum and aquarium. There are 3 main sections and each was excellent. The history part had intricate models to illustrate all elements of the development of the fishing and boat building industries. The aquarium was amazing with a wide arrange of fish and aquatic life, really beautiful and incredible to see. The third section was natural history with the feature point of the immense whale skeletons. Would thoroughly recommend. The staff were friendly and welcoming.
Lynsey D — Google review
Worth a visit! I enjoyed this museum a lot due to the many beautiful exhibits & topics that were divided into floors, but connected by the maritime theme. I would have needed more than 1 + 1/2 hours but that's because I took a lot of photos & videos & it was closing time. You start at the top with a viewing platform that shows you the ocean underneath the museum, the beach & the opposite coast (& more). There is also the coffee shop of the museum. Downstairs you find the main exhibition that was larger than expected & on the bottom floor you find the aquarium. There is also a small museum shop & lockers for luggage. If you're interested in ships, aquariums, fishing, the ocean, maritime history etc, then go for it. I'd recommend it 👍

It's a very good value for money. Aquarium on the bottom floor and amazing view from the top balcony. The floors are separated in to different time scales and ages of see exploration and see harbouring. The kids run thru it but did not been bored. Lacks a lot of English translation but Google lense helped at that part. Staff was very kind and considerate and the ticket prices are very reasonable. Awesome to hide from scorching heat.

A lovely museum! the top floor has a panoramic view and a cafe, beneath is a floor full of history. The general information was in Spanish, French and English. Then there's a floor of aquatic animals with the aquarium. The aquarium is quite big for being in a museum, I loved it. Overall recommend to visit to learn some history and watch some fish (they have jellyfish, starfish and small sharks!!)

Tapas bar
Casa Lita is a popular spot in Santander, offering a wide selection of northern Spanish pincho appetizers. Situated in a nineteenth-century building with stunning views of Santander bay, this vibrant bar is known for its top-quality tapas crafted by an acclaimed Michelin star chef. With over a decade of experience and numerous awards, Casa Lita prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients to create flavorful and diverse platters of pinchos.
When you are sat on a bench in Santander and feeling a little bit hungry but know all the restaurants are going to be booked out because its the busy season and you spot this place across the roaf and decide yo check it out. It looks like any regular cafe from the outside but once you are in you enter culinary, atmospheric, pincho heaven. The place is just buzzing and felt like it is equally popular with tourists as locals. We tried to return on Monday but thry were closed - looks like we will need to drive 14 hours back to Dantander one day then! Absolutely fabulous place.
Julie J — Google review
A little confused by the order system. Indoor sign says no table service but when I was able to flag down the waiter he placed my orders. Browsed the pinchos inside and when I didn’t know my table number, wait staff rolled their eyes at me. Table numbers are on the napkin holders for those who need to know. The single waiter working the entire outdoor patio was going nonstop: ringing up customers, clearing and cleaning tables, sweeping. Food was pleasant, went for the pinchos calientes including chicken curry, potato, vegetable, & cheese cassoulet, and bonito fish and cheese. The Gilda pinchos weren’t as good as they are in Bilbao. Did not prefer the cider, will stick with wine next time. Good for people watching and they remain open all afternoon and until midnight.

We had our visit in 5 years. Unfortunately our favorite tapas was not on the menu that day. Other tapas were great. The biggest question mark is about their beer. Why a Spanish institution serves Heineken?!?! Felt a very touristic decision
Jonathan R — Google review
I've been here twice, both times solo on busy nights, and I've received great service to accompany the best pinxos I've had in Spain. The food is fresh, coming out every few minutes, inventive, and absolutely delicious. Even though it's popular and busy, it's never chaotic, and they make sure everyone receives attention. I recommend Casa Lita to anyone visiting Santander.

La Bombi, also known as La Taberna La Bombilla, has been a staple in Santander since 1935. It's renowned for its refined seafood dishes and regional Spanish classics, sourced from the nearby Puertochico market. The restaurant exudes an elegant and welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal place to savor the rich flavors of Cantabria. With a focus on quality and tradition, La Bombi offers a dining experience that showcases the region's culinary richness.
We entered La Bombi completely by chance and it was the best decision of our Santander stay ! The bar tender immediately welcomed us although it was already busy. He made sure we had a table (as the restaurant only opens at 21h, everyone waits at the bar) The food was outstanding: very nice clams to start, then we chose the solomillo (beef). It was absolutely out of this world. I took the one with salt, my husband with the anjovis sauce - we recommend both. You do need to like red meat rare/max medium rare. Excellent wine list and friendly service by the staff and restaurant manager. We will definitely come back !

One of the most famous restaurants in Santander. Something was off this night. Ordered medium rare rib eye steak - had a beautiful cut - ordered medium rare arrived well done. Asked for salt at least 3 times . Got amazing tomatoes and olive oil with salt - but no salt as requested. Girlfriend ordered oysters for appetizer they were average . Ordered crab from the tank , not sure if the same was what was served. In any case - famous famous - but not going back .

Beaches
Playa de Mataleñas is a stunning cove beach with fine sand and turquoise waters, nestled between cliffs near Santander. Accessible via steep stairs, it offers a peaceful haven away from the bustling Playa Sardinero. The area also features attractions like the Ethnography Museum and beautiful gardens around Centro Botin. Additionally, the Sercotel Palacio del Mar Hotel offers event spaces including the spacious Matalenas room equipped with modern amenities for meetings or weddings.
It a very beautiful sandy beach in a small natural bay. The gradient is slow and water not rough. This allows enjoying the beach easily on any sunny day. Spent an hour or so at the beach during recent visit there. However, there is a steep climb back through stairs which must be taken note of while visiting the beach.

Wonderful secondary and hidden beach in Santander. The beach is inside a cove with high rocks on the sides and can only be reached on foot after a steep staircase, there is a car park nearby however because it is about 30 minutes walk from the centre of Santander. Despite the isolation there are always lifeguards. The water is wonderful and clean, the tide is very strong and I had the honour of visiting it in bad weather but it was hot and there was fog on the water; amazing and it was June. As you can understand it is never too crowded and is always majestic.

Playa de Langre is a secluded and scenic beach with unique cliffs that can be accessed by a long staircase. The area is currently undergoing development to attract tourists, particularly surfers. The beach offers good surfing conditions for beginners and intermediate levels, with the western part providing calmer waters and the middle of the beach offering higher waves. Despite the strong smell from nearby cow farms at the top of the cliffs, once on the beach, it dissipates.
Lovely site. Huge cliffs with 2 beaches down below. The staircase to the smaller beach was wrecked and entrance closed (Oct. 2021). The area seems in full development and soon will likely have moved on from rural to suburban development aimed at attracting tourists (surfers). The small parking at the end of the access road doesn't allow campervans to stay for the night. A CCTV camera is mounted on a light pole.

Seafood restaurant
La Mulata is a popular restaurant in Santander known for its delicious seafood dishes. The breezy, blue-painted restaurant offers typical Spanish seafood rice dishes and shellfish platters. It's a great option for those who love clams and mussels. The restaurant is highly recommended, with excellent and attentive service. Visitors are advised to make a reservation or arrive before opening time to secure a spot as it gets packed quickly.
Hands-down the best seafood paella we have ever had in our lives. The amount of seafood in the paella was astounding. It felt like we ate a million squid and other delicious shellfish. The rice was cooked perfectly, seasoned perfectly, the depth of taste in the sauce was seafood perfection. Cannot recommend this enough. We also asked if we could get a small salad to start and they gave us the half portion of the normal big starter salad at half price. The bread they served was SO crispy on the outside, soft and moist on the inside. Surprising. They also gave us a little amuse bouche of grated tomatoes with some crispy toasted bread. The staff were very sweet and kind. They did serve the smallest Coke we‘ve ever seen for the price of a glass of wine in most other places. Wish we could return. Unforgettable dining experience!

What an amazing (mainly) seafood restaurant! We went on the recommendation of our daughter who had visited last year - we were not disappointed This Michelin starred restaurant is not stuffy or pretentious - it serves really nice food, well presented and above all really tasty We went early afternoon for lunch. After a complimentary tomato/garlic amuse bouche we shared 10 amazing scallops (we’re from Scotland and used to high quality scallops) these were cooked to perfection. We then had grilled Sea Bass and grilled Monkfish - both really tasty.and well cooked A nice bottle of Rueda white wine went perfectly with our food! Tea and coffees to follow. The service was excellent and the food delicious Highly recommended What more could you ask for? Eric and Jean Morrison Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Wife and I recently visited while spending a night in Santander. We ordered WAY too much food but it was excellent. The seafood paella could have served 4 people easily. It was so good. I've had paella several times and this was the best. My wife ordered the creamy seafood soup thinking it would just be a small bowl but they brought us a huge tureen of soup. (This was probably our fault as our Spanish skills are poor) But it was an amazing meal! Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for great seafood in Santander.

Overall a good place. Showed up without a reservation and they gave us the very back table by the restrooms..... Even though there were lots of empty tables. And the older male servers gave me an arrogant vibe. The female servers were all nice. And the overall atmosphere was nice. Food was good, but mostly seafood so finding other dishes was a challenge.

Restaurant
Asian fusion restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Somo, Restaurante En Uno en Somo is a delightful culinary haven that stands out among the many dining options in the area. This hidden gem offers an impressive array of dishes that beautifully blend international flavors, showcasing a unique fusion cooking style that rivals even Michelin-starred establishments. Diners rave about the exceptional quality and taste of each meal, with highlights including their mouthwatering Arroz featuring a generous socarrat.
A little hidden gem in Somo! A casual and friendly place where the chef creates wonderfull experiences combining several international cuisines (we used to call this fusion cooking). Most of the dishes we tried would be right at home in a Michelin starred restaurant. For something different, innovative and (relatively) cheap, this is the place to go.

Listen, we were told we couldn’t sit inside on account of all the reservations, so we sat outside. Fine. But then two other people came after us with non resos and were seated inside. The lack of coordination between greeter and other staff should never be felt by the clientele. The food was okay, for Somo anyway, which mostly has overpriced frozen food and dingy surf shops passing as restaurants. Something different. I have to say though the Asian flavours are not really coming through. The ramen a bit over gingered and the wrong kind of miso with a chicken broth instead of pork. Strange flavour. The other stuff had elements of Vietnam or of Singapore but missed the mark just slightly on both. Not enough fish sauce, cilantro, lime HEAT in the dipping sauce for spring rolls. Weird bitter and grassy aftertaste for most of their food, perhaps too much lemongrass but not fresh lemongrass? The skewers seemed to be a take on the Thai larb which was creative but just ended up tasting a bit like a Thai meatloaf. Missing the crunch of toasted rice and perhaps a demi-glace to show off the chef’s apparent “cordon bleu” roots. There were some Brazilian items on the menu which seemed misplaced to us and the charge for something simple like a nasi Goreng is, effectively, outrageous considering what I know goes into this most basic dish. We had high hopes but we won’t return. Communication issues between wait staff and kitchen (said the kitchen could split a meal then the kitchen came out and told us to split it ourselves - my first request anyway- the miscommunication regarding seating that made us feel that we weren’t wanted in their establishment… was it another reason?) and the failure of offering anything really authentic and a mishmash of “Asian flavours” just gave me a low feeling after the meal. Disappointing expenditure of money and a waste of time.

By far the best restaurant we have been to during our trip to Loredo. We have tried several restaurants , but this one was by far the best ! Great food, super tasteful and still healthy (instead of all the other options in the area , which are mostly burgers pizza and or fried fish) Very friendly staff and the food came super quick , would definately recommend to anyone who is in the area. Very high quality food for a fair price ! We have eaten there 4 times and will come back for sure when we are in the area again !
