Dunvegan Castle & Gardens is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and offers tours, beautiful gardens, and boat trips to a seal colony. Nearby dining options include The Old School Restaurant and Dunvegan Bar & Restaurant. The castle has a rich history as the ancestral home of the MacLeod clan. Visitors can explore the reconstructed mock-up of an earlier Keep and Hall blockhouse, while also enjoying proximity to other attractions such as St Andrews Aquarium and West Sands beach.
We spent all day here! It was great! We started off with the seals boat tour - saw 9 in total plus a seagull chick. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Then had a picnic in the gardens which were so peaceful, beautiful and well maintained. Then we finished in the castle. The rooms are fabulous. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable. All in all, worth the £17.50 for the castle and gardens and the £13.50 for the seals! Not good for mobility though.

A nice castle and grounds. Lovely waterfalls, flowers and scenery. The castle itself was nice but I've been to better. All the staff were friendly and provided some extra information when asked. Also saw a couple of seals not far from the castle walls. A short video at the end of the tour also gives some history to the castle, told by the current owner. Not suitable for those using wheelchairs as a lot of the paths in the gardens were either quite narrow or very bumpy. Inside the castle, it being from the middle ages, had a lot of stairs and no lift (pretty sure this would be mentioned on the official website). There is, of course, a gift shop, in fact two, one inside the castle and one outside along with a cafe. Prices are as expected in these kinds of places.
Chris M — Google review
I was there on a bit of a rainy day, do I have not seen much of the gardens. What I saw was nice and well kept. The castle tour itself is small, but nice and everything is lovingly arranged. The absolute highlight was the seal tour! When I saw the size of the boats, I second guessed my decision, but it turned out amazing! We where lucky that a lot of seals where out and we got really close, while respectfully keeping our distance. The seals did not seem to bother. The staff throughout was really friendly and helpful. The combo ticket garden & castle might be a bit expensive with 17£ (the seal tour is extra) but I still enjoyed it very much
Silke K — Google review
All the staff we encountered were friendly and polite. The castle itself is great - a few surprises on the way round. The exhibits are interesting and varied. I was with my father who needs a wheelchair for walking long distances. The staff at the payment counter and at the entrance to the castle were courteous and thoughtful. The website is also open and honest about its accessibility. An excellent visit.

A great day out, lovely to go inside the oldest inhabited castle in Scotland. Some wonderful art and artifacts on display. Wouldn't fancy a spell in the dungeon. A nice welcome from one of the guides. The views from the castle were amazing. We spent a couple of hours wandering around the beautiful gardens, so well laid out, a beautiful waterfall, and the giant 2.7 tonne pebble you can spin around. The trees 🌳 and plants were spectacular. We had a delicious late lunch in the café, good toilet facilities in the car park. Large car park, busy because it was a hot sunny day. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
Stella O — Google review
Friendly welcoming staff. Beautifully kept castle and garden grounds. Garden feature of waterful is beautifully landscaped. The Walled garden with vegetable patch glasshouse with exotic plants was pretty. They have boat tours to see the seals dependent on weather. The Food at the cafe was really tasty. Husband had brie and bacon panini and I had a very nice quiche.

This place was awesome!!! The castle was very, very cool, but the gardens were just kick ass. I love taking closeup flower pics, and i probably took over 100 different flower shots, but with my camera, so can't post here unless I edit later... I think we spent about 4 hrs here. Would have loved to sit down and just relaxed for another.
Mark F — Google review
We visited mid week and found there was plenty of parking. The entry fee was on a par with other such like places. The castle itself is not the most splendid we have visited, Crathes and Bamburgh are more spectacular, but there is plenty to see. The inside of the castle was fairly busy, and walking round was like follow your leader. The gardens are very well kept, and there is a seal boat trip which we didn't take. All in all it was well worth the visit

Located in Dunvegan, Isle of Skye, The Misty is a popular restaurant offering a variety of dining options for all tastes and budgets. This establishment is known for its friendly staff and dog-friendly environment. While the seating area may have been closed during one visit, the breathtaking views made up for it. The menu features items like pizza and garlic bread, although some patrons felt that their orders could have been improved.
The first night on Skye were looking for a place to get some dinner after our day of traveling. As most restaurants close quite early and need a reservation we grabbed some Fish & Chips at Misty‘s. It was quite busy but the food was still rather quick. It tasted great and the staff was super friendly. Would also recommend the ice cream.

Order - Fish and chips Traditional fish and chips with peas and tartar sauce. This was great. Time - 15 mins Presentation - see pics Quality - 5/5 - Some of the nicest fish and chips I have tasted. Quality batter, crunchy flavoursome. The haddock was big and tasty nice and fresh Quantity - 3/5 - I had ordered the small but they made a mistake and gave me a large which was great. Only one piece of fish though for the large portion and it's £16.00. Value for money - £13.00 for a small fish and chips. Good compared to similar places. We are on the isle of Skye which is pricey compared to the mainland. Great service, the takeaway was open and they served us outside in the sun no problem at all. Checked to see if we were happy. Can't fault the experience.

Nicky was serving us and she was just amazing! Was busy but no matter what she was so kind and lovely! We all enjoyed our food. Pizza and pasta was delicious and the desserts were amazing too! We brought our dog and she was welcomed with love x

Campsite told us this is the best place to go and have food with a toddler. Service was good but my god the price was over the top for the food we received! “XLarge fish &chips ” was not a large at all normal size at best for £19 and the small fish&chips if I remember right was £11 which would be enough for a toddler. The Margherita pizza was £11.99 the thinnest crust pizza I’ve ever had and no flavour at all. Only giving 2stars because the 2 lady’s were nice Also £2 for a bottle of water joke

So glad we ate here! The thin crust pizza and fish n chips were so good! Great dessert selection too. Family friendly atmosphere and plenty of free parking.

The Old School Restaurant is a charming family-owned establishment located in a former village schoolhouse, offering a delightful experience of Modern Scottish cuisine. Situated in Dunvegan, Isle of Skye, the restaurant provides an elegant yet cozy atmosphere with friendly service. The menu features locally sourced ingredients such as venison, shellfish, and foraged vegetables prepared skillfully into delectable dishes.
We had a lovely anniversary dinner while visiting Skye. The staff was all very friendly, the food was delicious. My husband had the liver pate to start and Fish and Chips. I had the trio of fish and the special scallops. Very delicious and enjoyable. Make sure to book a table in advance as the place was busy and many people had no table.
Cayman S — Google review
The venison was delicious and scallops were sumptuous. However, while the staff were friendly and courteous, they could have been more attentive and we had to ask for our first drinks. Food was delivered promptly which was great. The apple crumble promised much but sadly was disappointingly bland - great vanilla custard, though!

A Hidden Gem, Genuine Care and Exceptional Food at The Old School It’s rare to find truly great food in the UK, but we can say with complete honesty that we were blown away by The Old School Restaurant on the Isle of Skye. My partner and I aren’t fussy eaters, but we do have high standards, and this place exceeded them in every way. We’re from England and have dined all over, across England, Scotland, Wales, and abroad, yet this meal truly stood out as something special, and is on our list of one of the more memorable meal experiences. We hadn’t set any expectations before visiting, as we came in without a booking, just looking for a spontaneous evening meal out before leaving the Isle of Skye. The presentation of the food was elegant, the flavours perfectly balanced, and you could truly taste the thought behind each element of the meal. From the moment our meals arrived, it was clear how much care and pride goes into the food here. The presentation was beautiful, the portions generous, and the balance of flavours exceptional. I usually avoid chicken when dining out after too many dry, overcooked versions elsewhere, but this was perfect. The chicken was tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned, wrapped in bacon that added a gentle smokiness without being greasy or heavy. The gravy was rich and silky tying the flavours together beautifully. The roast vegetables and potatoes were golden, crisp-edged. Everything was full of flavour, and every part of the dish complemented the other with great execution of taste and balance. My partner’s slow-cooked beef was equally outstanding, melt-in-the-mouth soft and full of depth flavour, paired perfectly with smooth mash and a hint of sweetness from the puréed vegetables. Even the smaller details spoke volumes, from the warm, freshly baked bread and butter served with the starter soup, to the attentive yet unpretentious service. Everything felt genuine, cared for, and thoughtfully done. We visited in October 2023, yet we still talk about this meal as one of the best we’ve had. The Old School truly embodies what dining should be, honest, heartfelt, and full of pride in what they do. We sincerely hope they continue with the same passion and standard, because we can’t wait to return one day and relive that wonderful experience.

100% recommend! The food was amazing. Generous portions and so freshly prepared. I had the mussels with chips and my partner had the beef cheek. Followed by an incredible chocolate mousse and the biggest slab of sticky toffee pudding I’ve ever seen. The service was faultless too and the staff were so friendly. An absolute gem of a place! Make sure you book ahead as they get busy.

Stopped in after a day of hiking and sightseeing on Skye. Unfortunately, we were unlucky, and there were no tables available when we stepped in (the people ahead of us got the last table, then another couple got in after us and got in after a cancelation). We had already ordered takeout at that point, which was done really quickly. The takeout menu is small, maybe 4 or 5 mains, only 1 of them vegetarian (Indian curry). I got the fish and chips, which came with a big piece of fish that barely fit inside the container on top of plenty of chips. We had each ordered a beverage to have while we waited, but the food came out so fast we hadn't finished the drinks. The fish was crispy, flaky and had decent chips. They had self serve condiments (ketchup, brown sauce, tartar sauce, vinegar) and cutlery by the entrance. My vegetarian friend enjoyed the butternut squash curry and rice, despite not being a huge fan of Indian food, but it upset her stomach later. More offerings for takeout would be ideal. Didn't think I would need a reservation on a Monday, but I did not know when we would make it to the restaurant.
Alison K — Google review
Stellar food - the mussels are fresh, the slow cooked beef cheek and lamb ragu are fork tender and the portions are generous. The sticky toffee pudding is to die for. So good I went there 3 times during my stay in Skye.
Caleb L — Google review
We had a fantastic dinner. The soup was great. We had to get an additional order because we enjoyed it so much. We had 4 different entrees, and each was fantastic. We also had 4 different deserts, each was delicious with the sticky toffee being the winner. All together, we would highly recommend Old School Restaurants. It has been a highlight for food as we traveled all over Scotland.
Lance M — Google review
A fantastic little restaurant. I dined here on two separate nights in August. If you want to avoid disappointment, I would certainly recommend booking in advance, as on the second night, there were no tables to spare. The staff were very friendly and polite, the service was very prompt also. All the dishes I had were excellent and the seafood was very enjoyable, mussels and chips were fantastic. If you've not eaten Langoustines before, I can highly recommend it. I had no idea what I was doing with shellfish, but they provide a handy and fun tutorial/explainer, which made the whole experience really accessible.

Located in a restored Highland croft, the Giant Angus MacAskill Museum is dedicated to the life of Angus MacAskill, known as one of the tallest true giants in history. The museum features a life-size statue of Angus, along with oversized items such as a chair, socks, and jumper. Visitors can also see a replica of his enormous coffin. The museum offers an intriguing experience that leaves visitors feeling small in comparison to Angus's enormity.
Quaint little museum, packed with local history relating to Giant Angus MacAskill. We visited there as our daughter, who attended Sabhal Mòr Ostaig (SMO), had visited with SMO. She wanted us to see the Museum and meet Peter MacAskill as she really liked the Museum and Peter. The curator, Peter MacAskill, is wonderful, inspiring, and so personable. He shares Giant Angus MacAskill's story and happy to help answer questions about Angus or other local things to do. Sung a song with Peter. He speaks Gàidhlig and our daughter was so happy to chat with him in Gàidhlig. Highly recommend you stop, visit the museum, and chat with Peter

There simply isn't a better museum on Skye, or in fact under THE sky. Peter the owner/curator has an infectious connection with every element of the Giant and the precious items on display. If you are ever in Scotland or the within 1000 miles, you should go directly to the museum. It will 100% be the best day of your life.

I was in Scotland for 14 days in June, my first trip there. Visiting this museum was my highlight. Mr MacAskill who runs the museum was such a nice person. He is a genuine Scottish gentleman. I am from cape Breton and a MacAskill. I really felt like this was part of home. Then to find out he is also Danny Macaskill’s dad was icing on the cake. Great stories.

A charming museum run by Peter, a very dedicated and fascinating curator. £2 entry, and if you're lucky he will sing you an old folk song 🎵

What a great little place. It’s family run and the gentleman in there was such a character. He sang me a song. Well worth a visit just to meet the living relatives of a true giant

We visited on a rainy day at the last minute. The owner was wonderful, very informative and excellent with our toddler. We have been singing the song on repeat since our visit. Thanks very much!

I love these little local snapshots of history. This place is great, loads of information on the life Angus MacAskill whom I would have never have heard of without coming here. We rang the visitors bell a few times and nobody came but the sign says just to enter so we did. My daughter hates dummies so be warned, it's a big one!! There was a mountain bike near the door which seemed out of place until my son started flipping out because there was a photo of Danny MacAskill by it, who he recognised as he follows him on youtube so there's obviously a family connection there. Shame we didn't talk to anyone to get more info about that but I enjoyed reading the many info boards about Angus who seemed like a really lovely man

History Museums
The Skye Museum of Island Life presents a rich history of the island's economy, including crofting, fishing, and weaving. The museum features seven well-crafted traditional thatched cottages that offer an authentic glimpse into life in a 19th-century Hebridean settlement. Preserving the township and collecting relevant items from the era helps visitors to comprehend what life was like for Skye Islanders at the end of the 19th century.
I have loved every part of skye since touring and this place was just incredible. To see the history in person was magic and everything has been preserved beautifully. We spent ages here reading through the information and looking at everything it was fantastic. The gift shop is nice too and the staff were lovely. Went for a coffee afterwards in the deli which was lovely too
Bekki H — Google review
This a lovely stop if you’re interested in history. A little group of preserved Croft houses chock full of interesting objects and stories, so not a standard museum experience, but in my opinion all the better for it! There is a lot of information on the display boards as other reviewers have mentioned, but you can still enjoy the museum without reading them all in detail if you’re not a “read the label” kind of person. I just chose the most interesting ones and read those 😊 It’s a treasure and so lovely to see the heritage of the island kept preserved and kept alive. The gift shop was great, with all the usual souvenirs, books and a few Skye-made options if you prefer your souvenirs local. There were also a couple of detailed information booklets available about some of the subjects covered by the museum. Staff lovely. There’s a toilet block in the car park. These were fine although a little dark. There is also a small cafe opposite which sells delicious pies and has a great selection of drinks. Also gives access to go see a couple highland coos.

Fascinating museum, well worth a visit. Original crofters cottage. Information about Skye's history, geology and lots more. As well the museum, there is a great little deli and takeaway, they do lovely hot pies and coffee. 😋

Fairly large carpark but gets busy so if you're in a motorhome get there early. Its a busy single track road with plenty of passing places so take your time. Full of history, well worth a visit
Michele W — Google review
The Skye Museum of Island Life is a charming and authentic glimpse into the traditional way of life in the Scottish Highlands. Set in a cluster of restored thatched cottages, the museum tells the story of crofting communities from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each cottage is thoughtfully curated, showcasing period furniture, tools, clothing, and household items that bring the history of the islanders vividly to life. The location itself is breathtaking, with sweeping views of the surrounding hills and coastline, making the visit as much about the scenery as the heritage. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, adding personal anecdotes and local context to the exhibits. It’s a small museum, but it’s packed with fascinating details, and you can easily spend an hour or more exploring at a relaxed pace. Well worth the visit for anyone interested in history, culture, and the spirit of the Isle of Skye.

This well-preserved collection of crofter houses contains multiple exhibits featuring island life. Seven beautifully conserved houses contain technology related to weaving, blacksmithing, home keeping and more. The site also has a great coffee place with delicious cakes. Well worth a visit. 👍👍👍

Jann's Cakes is a charming cafe and tea shop located in Dunvegan, known for its exquisite handmade organic cakes and chocolates. The menu features an array of imaginative lunch options, including Scottish goat prepared in West Indian style, as well as soups and toasties. Situated on the main road opposite Giant MacAskills Museum, Jann's Cakes has garnered praise for its delectable baked goods made with love and passion.
So imagine, after having eaten Fish 'n Chips you walk towards your car. And you'll see a shop named Jann's Cakes. Only takeaway. You get curious and decide to enter this small shop. And then, be amazed and wowed. Two very friendly people behind the counter. Serving you with passion, kindness, humor and a big smile. For such a small shop they have a lot of choice. Sweet and savory. We ordered two lemon cakes. And venison casserole with rice. They asked and double checked whether we liked to have freshly whipped cream with the cake. And whether the amount of rice is enough for 2 tall guys like us. The shop is only takeaway. The cake was delicious. The casserole is in our fridge and will be our meal for tomorrow.

Wonderful little place with a surprisingly large selection of baked goods, chocolates, coffee, and hot food. We decided on the venison casserole which was delicious and tender. We also got a cookie and a caramel chocolate frangipane tart type thing with fresh cream. Both were amazing. I assume we spoke to the owners whilst there and they were both very friendly and helpful. I would recommend stopping in! We are definitely going to pop back for some Jamaican curry. ☺️

So glad we stumbled upon Janns cakes when driving through Dunvegan! We had the casserole, coffees & of course had to try the baked goods- the Lemon cake was to die for!!! Best Lemon cake I’ve ever had. We also had the blueberry lemon cake which was also equally delicious! We also had to sample the chocolate made with honey and whisky.. everything we tasted was worth the calories! I love supporting local businesses, especially when the owners are so friendly and welcoming. Next trip out to Skye, we will be returning to this little gem!

Run by a lovely pair who clearly pour love and care into their hand-made cakes. I recommend stopping by here for some of their delicious cakes. They had a brilliant selection, with organic options too. The price reflects the quality, so dont let that put you off. The cherry bakewell tart was awesome! Brillaint bakery, would thoroughly recommend.

Forget about Dunvegan Castle, Jann's Cakes is why you should visit Dunvegan. The place is tiny but clearly full of love and very delicious food. We came here for a nice slice of cake and we were not disappointed. Yes, the slices may seem a bit more on the expensive side but you get a piece so big that you might as well have it instead of a normal lunch. Also, you don't just get a slice. It's also nicely decorated with some fruits (strawberries and blackberries), some sauce and whipped cream (if you asked for that). I also had a taste of one of the truffels and it was one of the best truffels I've ever tasted. We took 2 pieces of fudge with us to go and they too taste magnificent. I'll definitely be returning here one day. Honestly, the worst thing about this place is that you can't taste everything. Except maybe if you stay there a few days and have enough money to spend. So Jann, thank you for baking those delicious treats.

With stunning views of Loch Dunvegan and the majestic MacLeod's Tables Mountains, this guesthouse offers a serene escape for travelers. Guests can choose from four en-suite rooms or one with a private bathroom, all equipped with modern amenities like Wi-Fi and tea/coffee making facilities.
From the moment we walked in to The Tables Stuart and Janice made us feel so welcome. The rooms are very clean and crisp with great attention to detail and they really have thought of everything. The extra special things for us were the beautiful sun room with a great view over the Loch where you are invited to use at your leisure and the delicious home baked goodies on offer in the foyer. The breakfast was great and we really appreciated the good coffee served. The little village was also quiet and a great spot to get away from the crowds and slow down for a bit. Our absolute favorite stay during our April vacation. Hosts were lovely, breakfast was amazing, comfortable rooms and gorgeous location. Do not hesitate to book here! We will be back!

Stuart and Janet are a lovely couple and very accommodating. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to recommend The Tables Guest House to others. We spent two weeks in Scotland travelling around and The Tables Guest House was our favourite accommodation. Their eye for details and special touches are outstanding. The reception area is welcoming and adjacent to a cozy seating area with a fireplace, and a coffee/tea bar available all day long to the guests, as well as wonderful homemade pastries made and individually packaged by Janet. There is also another seating area with a view for guests to relax in. In addition, there is a breakfast room where we had a wonderful breakfast each day. Stuart was there each morning to happily greet us and take our breakfast order which was then prepared by Janet. Our room was cozy, and very private, the bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was modern. Well done Stuart and Janet!

Staying here was the best decision we made! Stuart and Janet were amazing hosts, they thought of all the perfect little touches, including the most delicious home-baked treats. The bed was very comfortable, my husband and I are 5ft10inches + and we had no issues standing up in the rooms. There was a great selection for breakfast including vegan and vegetarian options. Would definitely recommend staying here as it's a great location - plenty of attractions and restaurants nearby/short drive away and only a 20min drive to Portree. If you're looking for a nice place for dinner, Old School Restaurant had great food!

Very nice and high standard b&b with excellent rooms and good breakfast. The owners are so nice and welcoming. Will definitely stay here next time i visit Skye.

You often see couples on Escape to the Country who have grand ideas to start a wonderful B&B but here Stuart and Janet really living that dream. Take the time to read all the information that they send you when you first book, there's a lot of really valuable insights especially regarding restaurants (which are limited in this small town) and nearby attractions (when best to hike certain trails). They really are delightful hosts, with Stuart taking your breakfast order every morning and Janet replenishing her jar of baked goods daily, you really will feel like you've come home to family (in the best possible way). Add to that, the cosy conservatory in the front, the coffee machine and the boot drying room really shows their extra attention to detail. Rooms are private, inviting and warm especially on some of those infamous Scottish cold windy nights. The bedding is great, you'll want an alpaca duvet after your stay. Would definitely stay here again and recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone. Wish you all the best, thanks again!

We stayed here for 3 nights in September and had a wonderful time. The rooms are immaculate and the owners have put a lot of time and effort into making sure you have a good stay. Breakfast is exceptional with a lot of choice - all home made baking by the owner Janet. They are helpful local guides as well. Good location with several other cafes and restaurants nearby. Near the beautiful Dunvegan castle.

MacLeod Tables Cafe is a charming spot located within an award-winning castle and Highland estate. Visitors can indulge in a delightful meal at the cafe, offering dishes like jacket potato with salmon salad and fresh salmon baguette. The cafe also serves delectable cakes and offers a nice place for lunch or a small coffee pit stop.
Had a fabulous light lunch at the cafe today. Gluten free options were superb. I had soup & gf bread. The soup was homemade carrot which was delicious lovely and thick very warming and filling. Also had a gf slice of Victoria sandwich cake which was light moist and delicious. The coffee was really good. Service was brilliant and staff are very friendly. We were extremely full and the food was very good value. Portions were very generous.

Skip this café if you have any other choice! Location is great, just across the castle and within the parking area but food is nothing special and good service provided by the others spoiled by the lady server by the name of Georgia. For sure you’d get a warmer welcome and service elsewhere.. not a good way to start a meal.

Had a quick stop at the cafe and waited in line for about 5 minutes. The portion sizes are quite large which is good if you have an active day ahead of you. I had the venison stew and it was full of meat and vegetables which was perfect for a rainy day. Lots of desserts to choose from. Lots of gluten free options

The Venison Salami Panini was hot and fresh, and the cake was pretty nice. A little dry, but to be expected as I was there near the end of the day (about 3:20pm). The staff were super friendly and there was plenty of seating.

We were pleasantly surprised to have quite delicious meals! The negative reviews are unfounded. We had a quiche and pananis. The venison (panini) was very tasty, and the salmon and dried tomato quiche was a perfect blend of sweet and savory. A lovely refueling after touring the castle.

Best carrot cake I've had! We had a quick stop on the way back from coral beach, parking was easy and the cafe was lovely. Quiches looked delicious but we were just on a tea and cake mission!

Great food, many options, served very hot which is nice with the cold weather!

Good cafe to stop on a long trip. They had few vegan options including vegan soups and vegan desserts. Vegan tart was just delicious. Soup tasted good. The chocolate cake was just amazing.
