Gaydon in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Gaydon, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Gaydon is best known as the home of the British Motor Museum, which holds one of the largest collections of historic British cars and motoring exhibits. The village sits in the Warwickshire countryside, offering a quiet, rural setting within easy driving distance of Warwick Castle and Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon. It can also serve as a low-key base for exploring nearby Cotswold villages and other attractions in the West Midlands.
With favorites like British Motor Museum, Subway, and St Giles Church, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Subway so you can get the best taste of Gaydon while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The British Motor Museum, nestled in the heart of Warwickshire, is a vibrant destination that beckons both car enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. With an impressive collection of over 300 classic cars, this museum showcases iconic vehicles that have been meticulously restored to their former glory. It's not just about admiring these automotive marvels; the museum offers interactive features and engaging tours that make it accessible for everyone, including families with teenagers eager to learn about the evolution of automobiles.
We visited the British Motor Museum for the first time in August and enjoyed it so much that we went back in January using the annual pass included in the ticket price. It’s clearly signposted on the way in, so getting there was easy. There is little ride-along cars available for children at the entrance. You can push them around the museum while you explore, and our kids loved it. It kept them engaged and made the whole day easier. Even after spending an around 2 hours there on our first visit, we felt like we had only scratched the surface. There’s a lot to take in, and the second visit definitely didn’t feel like a repeat. There was a guided tour which we didn’t expect. The lady was very interesting and made a real effort with the kids. As part of the tour, we also got to go inside one of the old buses and other cars that are normally off limits. We ate at the cafe on our first visit and food was very nice and fairly priced. If you bring your own lunch, there’s also a picnic area with indoor seating. Parking was straightforward. There’s a big car park right outside and we had no issues getting a space. The whole place felt very accessible too, with lifts and wide walkways that made it easy to get around with a pushchair.

We visited the British Motor Museum in early September. At first, I thought £20 was quite expensive, but given how much time I spent there, I think it is very reasonable. Especially as the ticket lasts a whole year. The museum is easy to get to and find, and there is plenty of parking. There are plenty of things for families too. Small ride-along cars are available for children right at the entrance, and there’s also a small interactive play/games section to keep them entertained. The sheer number of cars is quite amazing, and even after spending a couple of hours here, it felt like we could have easily stayed much longer. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. One gentleman gave us a fascinating and detailed explanation of the Model T Ford, which really added to the experience. Overall, this is a great museum with a lot to offer. I highly recommend visiting.

Fantastic day out. The day we went there was also a Jaguar meeting so there was not only the hundreds of cars in the show, but hundreds outside too. Opted to do gift aid and got 12 months return tickets which makes it great value. Ended up spending most of the day their and there was lots of interesting bits to keep my 5 and 7 year old interested too (they are into classic cars anyway). Plenty of benches outside to eat food you have brought yourself. All in all a lovely day and we will be making a return journey when there's another event on. We purchased tickets in advance at the discounted price and this made entry very quick. Just show the tickets and enter.

A fantastic collection of classic cars, prototypes and cars used in a variety of films. Two buildings packed to the gills with some very fine and special examples. There is an entire of a building dedicated to Jaguar and well worth the visit. The cafe food and service is great too. I went for the Great British Model Railway Show and stayed for the cars!

This place is fantastic! It's a must see....... It's a great place for car lovers and automotive historians alike, there is a wide range of cars in the collection from movie cars, classic cars, celebrity cars to royal vehicles and more. Parking is easy and free, there is also a Cafe with spacious seating, toilets are fresh and clean, tables chairs etc. all clean. There is an adventure pack for kids that gives them things to do on the way around although it is not best for younger children. There is two buildings to see lots of cars in access of 400 or more! There is also a conference Centre for hire and they welcome school trips etc. This is a lot of history you can learn about ordinary car manufactures as well as the specialist manufactures as well. There is a couple of vehicles you can sit in such as a range rover and experience the massage seats working etc., plus a "Shaun the Sheep" Land Rover! The museum is well laid out, very clean and well presented. It is worth a visit even those who are not car fans who will still find it fascinating and enjoyable. Staff are friendly, very approachable and knowledgeable. Highly recommend visiting this museum.

Amazing museum with honestly the most comprehensive British automobiles yet. Tickets cost £20 for adult and £10 for children aged 5-17 but it’s definitely worth the price. Great for any family, with friends, or automotive enthusiasts.

We had a wonderful day out at the British Motor Museum with six of our residents. It was a day filled with laughter, learning, and lovely memories. We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to Ian and Thomas, the amazing staff who went above and beyond to make our visit truly special. Their friendliness, patience, and passion for the museum brought every exhibit to life. They took the time to connect with each of our residents, sharing fascinating stories and facts, and making everyone feel included, valued, and completely at ease. A special thank you also to Sophie in the café, who took our orders and served us with such care and kindness. Her warm smile and attentive service made the lunch experience just as enjoyable as the museum itself. We are so grateful for the hospitality and support we received. It was a memorable day for our residents and team, and we are already looking forward to visiting again.

Obviously a great place if you are a car nerd like me - where else would you see long forgotten Austin / Morris / BL prototypes and concept cars like a Triumph TR7 saloon?? Aside from this they have a great display of more mainstream cars from my childhood too :-) I actually enjoyed the ‘overflow’ building across the car park more than the main exhibition, packed with over 100 cars parked nose to tail … it took me some time to weave in and out of them all! Not sure if I saw a Marina in Harvest Gold but hey you can’t have everything …. and the Jaffa Cake cake in the café was excellent too!

Nestled on Church Road in Warwick, The Malt Shovel Inn is a charming local pub that perfectly embodies the essence of British dining. With its inviting atmosphere and delightful front terrace adorned with vibrant flower-filled hanging baskets, it’s an ideal spot to unwind. After a three-week motorhome adventure in France, I found my first meal back at this lovely establishment to be nothing short of exceptional. The food was bursting with flavor and beautifully presented, while the attentive service truly enhanced the experience.
What a great little gem of a local pub that we didn’t know existed but will definitely be back! We went for a family meal to celebrate my birthday here and the food was delicious! I had the chip shop board, the food was very yummy. The fish and scampi was lovely and crispy, the battered sausage was good too. The chip shop curry sauce was the best! I also tried the lamb shank as a family member ordered that, and that was also delicious. It fell right of the bone and the gravy was beautiful. The pudding also came with a small golden shovel to eat with, which was a great little detail. The staff were very attentive to our needs, we were running a bit late and they were very accommodating with that. They let us know there would be a bit of a wait for food, understandable as it was busy and this is also on their menu, but honestly it’s so worth it. There was some live music from 8:30, which got quite loud and made it a bit hard to talk but we’d finished our meal by that point. The atmosphere was great though! Will definitely be coming back in the future and thank you for a great visit!

I haven't been here for years after a bad experience with previous owners but my wife has, and has been pestering me to go for supper so we did. Very yummy! Great pub grub, very tasty. My steak and ale pie was excellent and the gravy - sublime! My wife's flatbread was huge with lots of chicken. Puds were yummy too! Nice friendly service too. We're already planning to go back soon 😋

Having read the reviews, we visited the malt shovel last night for a family dinner. Three of us arrived a bit late due to traffic however it gave two of our party ample opportunity to watch everyone else’s dinners be brought to the table and they were sold on the chip shop board. It was really nice that they could customise their choice between skinny fries and chunky chips As well as garden and mushy peas. I was torn between the chicken schnitzel and the prawn linguine, but then I saw the specials on offer and along with my stepson went for the lamb shank… We were both very impressed with how well the meat was cooked and the flavours of the sauce and the couscous was spot-on Three of our party did opt for desserts and in my video you can see the Home-made Banoffee pie. I had looked at the fruit crumble as it was one of the few vegan (Therefore, dairy free) Options on offer, however sadly when I placed my order there was none left. This was probably a good thing as I was quite full from my mains and sharing the prawn taco starter. As we were ending our meal live band was getting started which we weren’t expecting, but still enjoyed. The serving staff were really friendly and we also have to say a big thank you as they allowed my other half who is on prep for a competition to bring his own chicken and rice meal in a flask and even gave him a plate to put it on to eat with us. All in all, it was a brilliant evening out and we will be back when all of us can enjoy The amazing food on offer

Called in on th off chance off being allowed to park our Motorhome there for the night. Staff were superb, atmosphere excellent and a very peaceful night. Only allow ONE Motorhome to park up so advisable to ring ahead. Very much recommended

First time visiting and what a fantastic visit it was. We were on our way back to Banbury after a weekend away in Wales and really fancied a typical Sunday lunch so I googled places near Banbury and the Malt Shovel popped up, so I booked a table. Lovely pub, very hospitable staff and dog friendly. The food was outstanding, we had a roast chicken each and it tasted beautiful. We will definitely visit again and I've already reccomended to my sister and her friend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Just back from three weeks in motor homing in France, and our first meal back in the UK was at The Malt Shovel, Church Rd, Warwick – it absolutely left all the French food for dead! From start to finish, the experience was fantastic. The food was excellent, full of flavour and beautifully prepared, and the service was second to none. A lovely touch – the owner even placed cones in the car park to reserve us a space ahead of our arrival to stay the night, which really set the tone for the evening. Overall, an outstanding experience and one we’ll remember. Massive thanks to the team – couldn’t recommend this place more!!

Staying in the area for a few days, Malt Shovel was recommended by ourb&b owner .Booked online for an evening meal at short notice, no problem. Menu had quite a few choices plus several specials. Both of us opted for liver and mash with crispy bacon for mains, absolutely banging, spot on, with beautiful presentation , plentiful, lovely and hot. Absolutely faultless. Managed a desert between us, just, generous portion of home-made cheesecake with cream and ice cream, very indulgent. Extremely polite staff. Just a small thing, but staff asked if we had any allergies before submitting the order, also, asked what condiments we'd like well before the meal arrived so that they came with the meal ,meaning no having to wait whilst food went cold. Such a simple thing, why don't other establishments do the same?. All in all, a very pleasant meal and evening, thank you Malt Shovel

Worst subway I’ve ever had! So mean considering I only had cheese and salad no meat virtually a just a dry roll asked for more mayo but hardly a squirt! Won’t visit again there.

Disappointing Experience at Subway I had a very frustrating experience at this Subway due to Jakob's rude and unprofessional behavior. He was unfriendly, unhelpful, and lacked basic customer service skills. Communication was also difficult, making my order process frustrating. Good service requires patience and professionalism, but Jakob showed neither. This experience left a bad impression, and I hope management addresses the issue for better service in the future.
Sai N — Google review
I was queuing to order when I seen the person preparing the sandwich before me digging her hands in bacon and chicken before grabbing all the cheese slices to separate them from each other. It really grossed me out as a vegetarian, there were clearly still bits of meat on her gloves which went straight to stick on the cheese. I left the queue to grab something in pret instead

Good efforts on a busy Saturday morning. There was a bit of a queue but they had 3 guys working and the wait wasn't too bad. Keep in mind it opens at 8 AM and closes early at 4 PM.

Closing at 4pm every day? This is no service!!! Not one single HGV driver would finish their work before 4pm. One parks up for the night, longing to have a freshly made dinner, and what one gets??? Closed at 4pm. Very disappointing.
