Brize Norton in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Brize Norton, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Brize Norton is a small Oxfordshire village on the edge of the Cotswolds, making it a quiet base for exploring this famous Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s best known for RAF Brize Norton, whose aircraft are a familiar sight overhead and which underpins the village’s modern history. Visitors can enjoy traditional English village scenery, with stone cottages, a historic parish church, and countryside footpaths. It’s also a short drive from attractive market towns such as Witney and Burford, which offer more shops, pubs, and dining options.
With favorites like Crocodiles of the World, RAF Brize Norton, and The Chequers, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Subway and The Chequers so you can get the best taste of Brize Norton while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Located in Witney, Oxfordshire, Crocodiles of the World is the UK's only dedicated crocodile zoo. It houses over 15 global species including critically endangered ones like the Siamese crocodile and Chinese alligator. With more than 100 individuals representing 14 different crocodilian species, visitors can have hands-on encounters and learn about these fascinating reptiles.
My visit to Crocodiles of the World was fantastic. There were many more species of animal than I was expecting, the site is really big with lots to experience. I visited with my girlfriend, and my uni friends and their young child who were all really impressed. Staff member Jamie was really friendly and informative, you could tell he has a real passion for the work he does at CotW.

Amazing place to visit for all the family! Loads of info boards dotted about. Wide variety of animals, with feeding talks every so often throughout the day. Well laid out. Cute little cafe with great variety to suit even the fussy eaters. Little playground to entertain the little ones while they wait for food
Cariad H — Google review
Me and my partner bought our two young charges (we’re both Nannie’s) and had such a good day! The children both loved watching the animals and it was all so accessible with a pushchair! They also loved being able to see everything for themselves without having to be picked up all the time. The four of us were almost the only people there, bar maybe 6 other people! No one was in anyone’s way and we all had the time and the space to fully explore! A fantastic day out!

Absolutely wonderful day. My son (7) and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. So many different species of crocodilians, reptiles and mammals. All of which you can get so close up to. My son loved the glass enclosures and being able to see the crocodiles teeth and eyes, the snakes scales and the whiskers of the binturong. I felt like all the animals were lvingky taken care of and all the closure and the zoo itself was clean and tidy. The keepers were lovely and informative. Cafe catered for the basics and we had tasty hot food. Played the new gator golf and while short holes the setting was brilliant and captured my son's explorer imagination. Will definitely be going back, we just live 50miles away so a bit far for too many trips 😊.

Great time !! ... friendly and informative keepers, lots to do and see, look for the keepers talk/feeding times on the board at reception, they are good ! watch nile crocodiles jumping out of the water for food !!! .... mostly indoors so weather genuinely doesnt matter, and tropical climate so lovely and warm. highly recommend. Will go again.
Mike P — Google review
Fantastic visit during term time. Chap who gave us the talk about the binturongs was brilliant, excellent knowledge and very friendly. Lovely to see the binturongs out in the enclosure. Feeding the crocs also brilliant, person feeding them made sure that we could see them jumping out of the water clearly. Brilliant day, I have recommended this place to so many people and they have not been disappointed. Hidden gem!
Tiefenbach G — Google review
Booked on a whim as we had a rainy day. Absolutely brilliant couple of hours out. Amazing to see the crocodiles and alligators. They also have other animals - tortoises, monkeys, leopards, snakes ect. A great experience to watch the crocodiles and Meercats being fed. Price was great and I would have paid more. Great job of conserving! 100% recommended.
Heidi B — Google review
Brilliant experience as always. Staff are friendly and are great to chat to after the scheduled animal talks. All animals are incredibly well cared for and the enclosures are impressively sized and decorated. Food in the cafe is tasty and well priced, and there are play facilities for children.

Bed & breakfast
The Priory Manor, situated in Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, is surrounded by a variety of local pubs and restaurants. The area offers natural beauty with beautiful gardens and cozy secret spots to relax with a book or observe the wildlife. A comfortable and neat room awaits guests, along with friendly staff who are always ready to assist. Guests can enjoy a typical full English breakfast and even request additional items if desired.
Me and my partner have spent a night here as a stop in between on our journey to Epsom. Staff were very friendly, always asking us whether we needed something else and room comfortable and neat. Breakfast, typical full English, you could ask for more if you wanted to. We were completely stuffed but they were happy to fry additional egg or sausage for you! Great service. Definately Recommend.

RAF Brize Norton

Air force base
Military base
RAF Brize Norton is located in a charming village east of Carterton, known for being home to the largest RAF base in the UK. The village itself boasts picturesque Cotswold stone cottages and thatched houses. Visitors can enjoy up-close views of aircraft, making it a great spot for photography and videography. However, parking is limited, and visitors are advised to be mindful of local regulations. The airbase hosts events like family days where spectators can witness impressive displays of aviation skills.
Excellent Airbase went from here in 91 the RAF food was lovely. As a spotting/photography location end of runway 26 best for arrivals just be careful parking as its a fast busy road. You can take picks of the Hercules from the track by the distillery easily.
Daryl B — Google review
A great place to plane spot, especially if you want to see military and government aircraft. You can often see the Airbus a400M atlas, Boeing C17 Globemaster III and many more military and government aircraft including fighter jets if you are lucky. However the reason I give 4 stars is because often there isn't always a lot of action and you have to go on a weekday. If Brize is using runway 07 there is a walkway path you can go to plane spot and if they are using runway 25 then plane spot from station road. Hope this is helpful!
Plazon85 — Google review
This is a great place to visit to see aircraft up close take photos and shoot videos, however a note of caution if you are looking to visit. Firstly there is little or no room for parking, and if you do park under the approach lights between the flashing lights you will be asked to move either by the police or military police so find somewhere to park respecting the locals of course. This can be a busy road and there are no paths so take care walking to this spot, there is a fence at the end of the runway but if your over 6ft you should see over it ok, be mindful of the road when standing on the grass verge, stay safe and enjoy watching the aircraft. One thing to bare in mind is that this is a military airfield which tend to be less busy than lets say Heathrow.
Ian S — Google review
It observationally seems like a great place for plane enthusiasts and RAF supporters?! And from afar as digital media that's my review of this place. However, I am unable to visit in person to fulfill my observation due to the clear security issue with our military and very expensive equipment ( taxpayer funded). If you fancy a protest, you can just get into the property quite easily and damage some planes, no problem. I would not feel safe to visit here or the surrounding here.
Oceanic815___ — Google review
Great place for a game of footy, we usually jump the fence somewhere and there's always loads of space. We can usually find the odd can of paint lying around to mark out the goals and we seldom get kicked out. Just stay away from the planes, they are vital to the nation's defence.
Nick W — Google review
Plenty of fences to practice your parkour, won’t even be hassled by the security. Can easily pitch up a little picnic on the runway and have a graffiti contest with other law abiding “locals”, again without interruptions. Overall the epitome of freedom without repercussions.
Drew H — Google review
Nice planes but security could improve. Only got the one picture of the base that day. Prefer Duxford IWM, only downside is they charge entry unlike RAF BN, but worth every penny. Have your money ready for Duxford IWM, those pensioners/volunteers don’t play games.

RAF Brize Norton, located in Oxfordshire, is the Royal Air Force's largest station and a vital hub for the UK's air mobility operations. Serving as the primary base for strategic and tactical air transport, air-to-air refuelling, and military passenger services, it plays a central role in both domestic and international operations. Facilities & Infrastructure: Brize Norton is home to an impressive fleet, including the Voyager, C-17 Globemaster, A400M Atlas, and Hercules aircraft. The base itself is extensive, with modern facilities to support both operational requirements and personnel welfare. For service members and their families, the base offers housing, recreational amenities, and community services, though some aspects can feel utilitarian due to the sheer scale of the station. Operational Importance: The station is integral to the UK’s rapid deployment capabilities. RAF Brize Norton supports missions across the globe, from humanitarian aid and disaster relief to active military deployments. Its role in operations such as troop transport to conflict zones and medical evacuation is well-documented and widely respected. Community and Accessibility: While a military base by nature, Brize Norton maintains strong links with the local community. Occasional public events, such as air shows or community outreach initiatives, help foster goodwill and allow civilians a glimpse into RAF life. Noise from aircraft can be a concern for nearby residents, but this is generally accepted as part of living near an operational air base

Sandwich shop
Subway is a popular counter-serve chain known for its customizable sandwiches and salads, offering a variety of health-conscious options. The restaurant prides itself on providing fast and reliable service, ensuring that customers can enjoy their fantastic food without any hassle.
Since they introduced the kiosk system to order (don't take over conter orders now) the queues and the wait time seem to be 10-15 minutes depending on how busy they are. There was more customer satisfaction when the kiosks weren't there, and you would just wait in the queue and then go down the line as you ordered your food. The wait time doing it that way seems so much less as you're kept busy following your order down the line.
Jason R — Google review
I won't be back! That's all I can say. This place was absolutely atrocious and that's coming from someone who worked at a Subway. The girl with red hair what can I say, sloppy service, rudeness, and just a general attitude of not wanting to be there. Receipts all over the floor and very very dirty. Avoid at all costs.
Shaun E — Google review
The place was dirty didn’t look like it had been cleaned at all, receipts and food all over the floor by the seating area… had to order using the electronic screen that wasn’t clean either… hate those things… waited far to long for my order and had to get my own drink… when I looked behind the counter when getting my own drink there was trodden food all over the floor and it looked not very hygienic at all really disappointed with the experience it used to be good there when it was next to the tills for the garage
Collyzlee C — Google review
Unable to order using app or tablets due to sandwich option not available on screen. Staff refused to acknowledge us and asked us to just order on the tablets. Avoid completely, decided to go elsewhere.
Bob L — Google review
Was told if I couldn’t use the kiosk, then I couldn’t be served until all other orders had been completed. I’m pregnant and stood waiting for over half an hour with my 2 year old before we just left. No apologises from staff member George, shocking service, wont be returning.
Shania S — Google review
Gone to ratsheet in past 6 months . When it was in Budgens they were great , now it’s order by machine and made by numpties , my Tuna Mayo today came with …..no tuna ….didn’t used to happen when you had a dialogue with the person making your sub ….which was theirwhole USP . They turned it into McSandwich for Deliveroo deliveries , sad
Guy K — Google review
Went in a while back, and I wanted to order at the counter to get something specific added to the sub. I was rudely and abruptly told to use the machine, which at the time had no option to change specific things (or at least the interface was not clear enough). So I left and have never returned. And because of their poor attitude to help, I will never eat at that subway again, maybe any subway ever. No doubt comes down to appalling management at that particular place.

Rude staff , particularly the lady !! Don't acknowledge you as they can't interact like normal humans . Place is filthy !!! Also girl with pinky hair was by the bins at the back with cooking trays and left them on the bins and brought them.back in , hope they are getting washed . !!🤢 avoid

Outstanding! Not sure why this rates a little low, great staff, outstanding food and lovely ambience and environment. Want somewhere for a lovely dinner at a fair price, this is it.
Neil C — Google review
We have been here several times before and always found it lovely, great food and service but today it was far from great service the blonde lady was very rude and abrupt very dismissive and needs to learn some customer service skills. We were over charged so make sure you check your bill. Also if having a vegetarian carvery be aware you are still charged £16.95 for some vegetable fingers instead of meat. The food was tasty husband said meat was lovely so a meat carvery is worth the price but please improve your service and prices for vegetarian.
Laura F — Google review
Stopped here yesterday for some food, got a half cooked burger and chips burnt to a crisp which the kids didn’t even touch! Absolutely disgusting raised my issue to which they agreed could clearly see the burger was undone and chips were basically oil paid £14 for the burger and £5.50 for each kids meal was given £5 refund! Extremely disappointing for a nice country pub def avoid if ur looking for some good food!
Lisa C — Google review
4.2 stars? How can this be? Chain kitchen pub, rundown appearance, unfriendly staff. I've eaten worse places, but don't be deceived by this place's rating.
Justin W — Google review
Wow what a gem! We travelled 4hours to visit a local attraction and found this place for some food. The food was amazing quality and well priced, the sun was out so the children had a lovely time playing in the huge garden out the back with great facilities. The lady working this afternoon was so smiley, friendly and helpful, thank you!
Hayley D — Google review
I think it depends on what time of day you go. But they'd run out of the real ale I wanted also my 2nd choice Guinness. The food was to a standard but the staff were helpful and courteous.

Complaint. We came in for mothers day meal 1. Glasses was absolutely disgusting asked for clean ones got new ones but again the glasses were disgusting was advised sorry we are running out of glasses Absolutely poor service 2. The lady with the blonde hair dressed in black Our party of 4 all felt the coldness and bad attudie. I also watched her untill we left she was very blunt and really seem like she had a bad chip.in her shoulder 3. The stuffing was absolutely rock hard 4. The place is needing a good clean and dusting I found it totally unacceptable to be told highchair is behind them just get it out This should of been done prior to arrival or done for us while we sat down but blunty to be told do it ourselves. Again absolutely poor poor service Only 1 baffled staff actually smiled. This isn't hospitality or delivering excellent service The pudding (trfile) was a wash out The jelly wasn't set correctly The Custard was tasteless and the fruit was a very weird mix for normal trifle. The toilets were disgusting and need a good clean They is no signs to state when last cleaned Absolutely shocking and very unacceptable
