The Konark Sun Temple is a 13th-century Hindu place of worship that showcases the grand chariot of the sun god, Surya. It is considered to be eastern India's finest example of sacred Kalinga architecture and Orissan artistry. Built as a cosmic chariot for the sun deity Surya, it is adorned with intricate iconography and mythical dimensions.
Konark Sun Temple is one of the most magnificent heritage sites in India. The architecture, stone carvings, and intricate sculptures beautifully depict ancient art and culture. The temple’s chariot-shaped design dedicated to the Sun God is truly mesmerizing. The atmosphere around the temple feels spiritual and majestic. It’s a perfect destination for history lovers, photographers, and anyone who appreciates India’s glorious craftsmanship. A must-visit place in Odisha! 🌞🏛️

It's an architectural marvel. Saw something I learned in my social science textbooks in person. Had a big lawn around the structure. The designs are intricate. There is a parking space outside. Tickets cost Rs 40 per head. Guide and photography facility available. Photographers charge Rs 130 per photo. Be mindful of saying the exact number of photos you require, otherwise the photographer may print all the photos he has taken. Best time to go is in the morning. It opens at 6 am. Rush will be less and sun will not be burning down on your heads.

I recently visited the Konark Sun Temple in Odisha, and it was an incredible experience. The temple is not only a symbol of devotion but also a masterpiece of ancient Indian architecture. The moment I saw the grand structure shaped like a giant chariot, I was amazed by its beauty and the skill of the craftsmen who built it centuries ago. Every wall and pillar of the temple tells a story through its detailed carvings and sculptures. The artwork reflects the creativity and intelligence of that time. Walking around the temple complex, I felt a deep sense of respect for our history and culture. The atmosphere there was calm and inspiring. The open surroundings, the sound of the wind, and the sunlight falling on the stones made the whole place feel alive. It’s not just a historical site — it feels like a journey into the past. Overall, my visit to the Konark Sun Temple was unforgettable. It’s a place that truly shows the greatness of India’s heritage, and I would highly recommend everyone to visit it at least once in their life.

It was a wonderful experience visiting the Sun Temple. The best time to come here is from November to February, as summers can be extremely hot. You can rent an umbrella outside, which is useful since most of the area is open. Highly recommended
Sachin — Google review
The Konark Sun Temple, built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, is one of India’s greatest architectural marvels — a stone chariot of the Sun God, Surya. The temple stands on twelve pairs of colossal wheels, drawn by seven galloping horses, symbolizing the seven days of the week and the cosmic journey of the Sun. These wheels are not mere ornaments — they’re functional sun dials, marking time through the play of shadow and light. Carved from sandstone and fine-grained chlorite, the temple walls come alive with 128 distinct dance poses — each sculpted with extraordinary grace, capturing the rhythm of Odissi’s ancient roots. Alongside celestial dancers, one finds divine beings, mythical creatures, warriors, and everyday scenes — all harmonized into a single cosmic story. Among the most fascinating carvings are the Kāmakalā sculptures, depicting the tantric union of Shiva and Shakti, symbolizing the eternal balance of creation. These are not merely erotic figures but profound spiritual metaphors — expressing the same energy that sustains the Sun’s radiance itself. The sanctum once enshrined a magnificent Aditya Murti, believed to have floated in space through magnetic design — a legend of lost brilliance. Today, that sacred image, along with the Aruna Stambha, stands at the Jagannath Temple in Puri, preserving Konark’s divine essence. Behind the main structure rests the tranquil Chhaya Devi (Mayadevi) Temple, completing the spiritual circle of light and shadow. Though time, weather, and invasions left parts of Konark in ruin, its spiritual pulse remains eternal. Konark is more than a monument — it’s a celestial wheel of art, astronomy, and tantra, where every carving glows with sunlight and the pulse of devotion. ₹40 per person (for Indian visitors) 600/- for forgieners. The ASI Museum beside the temple, which houses original sculptures and fragments preserved from the site, and the IOCL Interpretation Centre, where a brilliant audiovisual show beautifully narrates the history and legend of Konark. A must-visit for seekers, artists, and dreamers — here, even stone seems to dance to the rhythm of the Sun.

An architectural masterpiece and a truly mesmerizing experience! Konark Sun Temple is one of the most stunning heritage sites I have ever visited. The moment you step inside, you can feel the grandeur, history, and artistic brilliance that define this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The intricate stone carvings, the iconic chariot wheel structure, and the sheer scale of the temple leave you absolutely speechless. The site is well maintained, and the guides provide excellent insights into the temple’s history, mythology, and symbolism. Visiting during sunrise or sunset makes the experience even more magical. Only disappointed with the replacement of few parts of the buliding under the process of restoration of the architecture left many history behind. A must-visit place for anyone traveling to Odisha- perfect for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to witness India’s cultural richness. Highly recommended! 🌞✨

Konark Festival Ground

Fairground
The Konark Festival Ground is a stunning location that hosts the annual Konark Festival, celebrating the renowned architecture and culture of yesteryears. Visitors can expect a great time filled with enjoyment, as they immerse themselves in the festivities while being part of a well-managed crowd.
Odissi, also referred to as Orissi in old literature, is a major ancient Indian classical dance that originated in the temples of Odisha – an eastern coastal state of Bharat. Odissi, in its history, was performed predominantly by women, and expressed religious stories and spiritual ideas, particularly of Vaishnavism through songs written and composed according to the ragas & talas of Odissi music by ancient poets of the state. The theoretical foundations of Odissi trace to the ancient Sanskrit text Natya Shastra, its existence in antiquity evidenced by the dance poses in the sculptures of Kalingan temples, and archeological sites related to Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. The above said fact is beautifully expressed on the stage on 3rd December, at the 35th international konark festival, in Konark. Along with this, also enjoyed a south indian classical dance.

The story of this holy temple is popular and the story is on every tongue 👅. The popular stories of Shree Narayan and His sister and brother represents a strong validation of Sanatan. The priests of the temple replace a "Flag of the temple each day". If it is not done, the temple will be closed all around 20 years. Also there are many stories that tells a different Morality.

I don't know why people don't visit Konark Museum after visiting Konark Temple, whereas the real knowledge and information is here. When you come here, you will see Sun God's sculptures. You will see different sculptures. You will like it a lot. See the sculptures to know what people were like earlier. Where did these sculptures come from earlier. What is their value, then you will know, then will you see this thing.

Fortunately good sense has prevailed and this small museum now allows photography inside. There are a reasonable number of artifacts with descriptions. If only there was a lot more information about the construction of the Konark Sun Temple and a large scale model of what the site may have looked like, it would have been more educative. From an earlier visit not that long ago, I see progressive decay in the stonework of the Sun Temple, so this museum could have been put to better use by saving more artifacts from the nearby site.

It's museum dedicated to the sun temple.... One can learn a lot of history of the temple here... There were hardly few people here... There is a entry fee but it's totally worth it... The artifacts which traces back to the 12th century kalinga dynasty can be seen here... The statues are the stones which had fallen from the temple are well preserved here... There no parking lot but there is enough space outside... The staff were very polite and humble...

The most prominent symbol of the Konark Sun Temple is its chariot shape, specifically the 24 wheels and 7 horses representing the Sun God Surya's chariot. The restaurant Gitanjali, located inside the OTDC Konarak, is truly impressive. The atmosphere is delightful, and the cuisine is exquisite with reasonable prices. I highly recommend trying their Chilli Paneer and Mushroom Masala dishes. This place should definitely be on your list when visiting the Konark Temple or the Konark Interpretation Centre. However, it's important to note that the service can be slow, so it's advisable to order your food in advance or make a reservation.
While traveling in Odisha most of the time I prefer to take food at OTDC restaurants. As they are clean, hygienic and staffs are well behaved. And when it's about Gitanjali Restaurant, Konark the most prominent cause is it's location. This place is located right near the entry and exit point of the Sun Temple, Konark. They have a beautiful garden too. Food Quality: Fresh and they prepare it on order only. So one need to wait for 20-30 minutes for the order to be served. Good in taste. Not much spicy🌶. But it was even more good in previous years. Food Price:reasonable. Atmosphere: Less crowded. Neat and Clean. Well maintained. Refreshment/Washroom: paid service. Clean. Parking facilities: available.

All types of thalis are served here. Quality of food is average. Service is horrible. They don't provide water also till you ask. Washroom is maintained but costs Rs 20 per person which is too expensive.Parking is available.

Service needs lot of improvement. I was very happy when I visited last in 2020. Down the line service and menu both have degraded. Only cook and one waiter are catering for all guests. And as per the floor manager, the cook has been cooking since 6am. So clearly on can understand his state of mind and body.. Humble request to please improve and restore ur past glory.

Good food, good people. We ordered Pakhala, a traditional Odiya dish, it was quite tasty and fulfilling. Ambience and cleanliness were good. Hoping to visit more OTDC venues. One can plan a meal when visiting Konark, as it is close to the temple.

The food was very expensive. The place is well maintained though. The area is clean and the atmosphere is peaceful, a little away from the busy street with a well maintained garden. The place is not air conditioned. Digital payments are accepted. Their toilet located inside this premise is very expensive ₹20 per use.

Had visited recently with my family. There are fewer options for lunch in the vicinity of the temple when we saw this OTDC restaurant, we thought of giving it a try. The restaurant accepts only cashless payments(mostly UPI). Has good ambience with lesser tables than a usual restaurant. Its understaffed, seems one cook is there, so ot takes time in delivering the food on table. Overall the food which we had ordered was tasty and fresh.

Quite impressed with the place. The ambience was good. The food was great and the prices are reasonable. Chilli Paneer and Mushroom Masala is highly recommended. Do check this place out whenever you visit Konark Temple or Konark Interpretation Centre. But their service was slow so make sure to order food before visiting the places or try to pre book your meals. It's inside the interpretation centre.

Worst Restrurent of my life. They are charging Rs. 200 is for chicken thali (2 small size chicken) is not good. They served us rice mixed with worms. Then they changed this with jeera rice mixed with worms, so we can't figure out the worms. They waste precious 1 hour 20 mins in our tight schedule. Never try this restaurant. Road side dhaba is better.
