Holker Hall & Gardens is a historic estate located in the Cumbrian countryside, featuring a stately home and 23 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. The house, originally built in the 17th century and rebuilt in Neo-Elizabethan style after a fire, offers tours showcasing its interior design. The gardens cover 25 acres of woodland and formal garden areas, complemented by 200 acres of natural parkland.
The gardens are really very good. Well maintained with lots of interesting planting and lots of staff keeping it tidy. We will be keen to return when all the bedding Plants are blooming. Cafe is very well presented and well staffed. Not sure about the food choices. Aspirational rather than enjoyable.

Holker Hall is an absolute delight to visit. The house itself is stunning — full of character, history, and charm — but it never feels stuffy or overly formal. You get a real sense that it’s still lived in and loved, which makes exploring it even more special. The rooms are beautifully kept, with lovely guides who are happy to share stories and little details about the family and the estate. It’s not just about grandeur — it’s warm, welcoming, and genuinely interesting. And the gardens… they’re just gorgeous. Whether you’re into flowers, trees, or just want a peaceful walk, the grounds are beautifully designed and immaculately maintained. It’s the kind of place where you want to take your time, breathe in the fresh air, and just enjoy the surroundings. The café and shop are also great — delicious food, friendly service, and a nice place to relax after wandering the estate. All in all, Holker Hall is a gem. Whether you're into history, gardens, or just looking for a lovely spot to spend the day, it's well worth a visit. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Such a beautiful place! My dogs and I enjoyed our walk around the stunning gardens and parkland. So many different types of plants and trees to see and a beautiful fountain too. You get a handy map on arrival so we walked around and got to see everything. The place has a lovely relaxing atmosphere. I thought it was great value for £11.50, I will visit again with my dogs on my next trip to the lake district :)

Lovely food and you can enter the restaurant for free with free parking. Well worth popping in as you pass. House is decent with some history. Gardens are lovely and well worth the money, especially on a nice day. They have plants and trees which I've never seen before.

A beautiful place to spend the day. Everything here has been done to a high standard like the lovely toilets and fab cafe. A free talk was given in the Hall then we were left to wander. The garden was beautiful too and all the staff were friendly and helpful.

Fantastic ! well kept house and beautiful gardens. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Easy to spend a few hours exploring here. Cafe, toilets, and gift shop are accessible without having to access the gardens and house (chargeable)

Tucked away, but not far from the main road. Beautiful gardens, relaxed and quiet. Interesting house - no guide book so ask the guides for details, they are knowledgeable. Cafe/restaurant food delicious & cooked fresh so it doesn't take a little while. We will return in the autumn..
Christine S — Google review
Lovely well maintained gardens and grounds with lots of flowers and ornaments to view. Pathways are wheelchair friendly with some grassy routes and other hard ground small pebbles wheelchair front castors friendly some steep slopes, so be weary. Only viewed the gardens as the Hall has steps. There is plenty of free parking and there is a gift shop and cafe.

Had a great family experience with Lakeland Segway. Started by recieving some training by Instructors/ Guides Patrick & Oliver who then took us on a tour of the countryside. They really spent the time with us making sure we enjoyed the tour by also stopping along the way to show us some stunning views of the countryside. Overall a great family experience. Will look forward to doing it again 👍😁

We thoroughly enjoyed the Cartmel Segway Tour - Helen was a great host and explained everything really well to us Segway newbies, making sure we were fully comfortable with some training before we set off for the tour. A great experience and a unique way to see some sights of the Lake District, I couldn’t stop smiling throughout the 75 minutes it was so much fun! Would highly recommend! Handily located for a mooch around Cartmel village with a spot of lunch followed by an ice cream!

Horse Tracks
Cartmel Racecourse is a charming and historic venue that attracts horse racing enthusiasts from all over. Despite being one of the smallest racecourses in the country, it boasts impressive attendance numbers, often ranking third after Aintree and Cheltenham. The racecourse dates back to the 19th century and hosts popular meetings two to three times a year, with its most famous event occurring during Whit Week.
Cartmel Races is an experience everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. Booking tickets through the official website was straightforward and hassle-free. The races themselves were thrilling to watch, creating an exciting and memorable atmosphere. The volunteers were incredibly kind and helpful, adding a welcoming touch to the event. There were also plenty of excellent food stalls, all maintaining good hygiene and offering great quality. Overall, a fantastic day out!
AKHIL_VARGHESE_ITTY — Google review
Visited this track for the first time as an owner and loved it. Very unique in that all of the activities are in the centre of the course with the track running around the perimeter. It was like a country fare with more eateries than I have seen at any other track. Great views of the track from many parts of the course. The staff were really friendly including the catering team and the stewards. Amazing day out.
Gerry C — Google review
Beautiful place. One of very few horse racing tracks that you can bring in your own food and drink (yes, including alcohol.) Bring a camping chair and setup base as if you were camping or having a picnic. Lots for kids to do with plenty of places for food and drink. Update July 25. We headed back to Cartmel for the same meeting as the review above. This time we booked Course tickets (the track is essentially cut in two with the finishing line running through the middle) check google out for a map. Course and Paddock. This was the first time on the side of the track for 3 years and I have got to say it’s better than the paddock side (and CHEAPER!) Again bring a picnic, beers, camping chairs and setup base in such a beautiful part of the lakes. This area of the track is best for family’s due to the funfair. You can book funfair tickets with a discount via the Cartmel website or pay on the day. We are already planning our trip to Cartmel next year and we will be booking COURSE tickets again, I advise you to do the same. Top tip - bring a brolly! When the sun is shining it gets very hot and well we all know rain is possible at anytime of the year in the UK. There is very little protection from the rain or sun due to there being very little infrastructure on site. I’ve visited 20+ race tracks in the UK and this is without doubt now my FAVOURITE. You must visit!

A proper fun day, relaxing and enjoying the horse racing, the carnival atmosphere and the beautiful setting.. a great day out 🏇🏿🍻😎

Visit the race course twice over the Bank holiday Saturday was very busy, where the Bank Holiday Monday seem a little bit less busy. Depending on how your getting there, you have access to 2 car parks. Bus / coach takes you into the inner course , where the car park is a little walk into the course. Betting was easy with alot of stands to purchase your slips There was a fair and plenty of food and drink outlets. Prices in my opinion were over priced !!! Plenty of toilets and alot of staff on hand to help. Most people took chairs, gazebos with tables for there own food and drink, family friendly. I believe there could be a charge for gazebos, please check Getting out at the end of the races was ok 2 pictures of the course and a picture of tge square at Cartmel The village was very busy
Chris W — Google review
A great experience all round. You’re welcome to bring in your own food and drink (including alcohol!) or there are good options on site. If you’re not in the paddock or don’t have a table pre-booked and paid for then make sure you bring camp chairs and arrive early to get a good spot by the course. Ticket prices are very reasonable. Facilities were good and I barely had to queue for the toilets the whole time. Only area for improvement - They could do with a few more big screens for watching the parts of the race you can’t see.
Emma — Google review
Excellent day out for all. Let down by the GlassHouse as this was the marquee last year and not able to bring your own drinks. Didn't help that the bar staff had only one credit card machine between themselves. Far better race event than most with a great atmosphere.

What a brilliant day we had. families are made welcome at this course and you can take your own drinks and food. there's a fair for the kids And loads of take aways.

I’m up in Cartmel on holiday and decided that it’d be nice to go for a little pampering. Looking locally I found Park Lane, they had a great easy to use online booking system and offered packages, so I booked the Notting Hill (massage & facial). The treatments were lovely and relaxing and the staff friendly and helpful, I’ll definitely be returning if I’m up here again and would highly recommend to anyone else in the area on holiday who fancies a bit of me time and pampering.

Cartmel Village Shop is renowned for its world-famous Sticky Toffee Pudding, which has been a favorite for over 30 years. The shop's handmade pudding, crafted from natural ingredients, attracts visitors from all over the country. Additionally, the shop offers traditional recipes utilizing wild foods and a range of comforting desserts. It also provides deli items, fresh produce, and store cupboard essentials.
Lovely village shop in Cartmel, bought several sticky toffee puddings, and had some posted to various family members in different parts of the country. There was a problem with the delivery and they were not received. The response from The Sticky Toffee Pudding Co. Was fantastic. They rang me and my wife back and resolved the situation, I can thoroughly recommend them they are excellent.

Legendary shop, the home of the Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding. And it was gooooood. They also sell food, cheese, sweets and all sorts of other flavpur puddings. Its a must stop for dessert fans. Get a takeaway from here, And or have the same pudding and have a seat at the cafe opposite. Parking outside the front if you're lucky. Or pay for parking in the massive lot behind the shop. Its reasonably priced. Check out the history of the pudding yourself as its quite quote interesting.

Great to visit this little shop. I know you can buy the puddings in many places but was nice to have a look around. Lots of different items to choose from.

I need a Cart, melts my heart looking at all the produce! Great range of local products not forgetting the wonderful range of puddings (ginger is my favourite!) Can get busy in the summer being a small shop soon gets crowded but always worth a visit. It's also handily placed for one of my other 'vices' as the racecourse is behind the shop!

Really lovely shop. Full of lots of cartmel gifts. Staff all lovely and are passionate about the shop and local area. Little cafe with good coffees and can get warm sticky toffee puddings. They do good deals on cartmel puddings so definitely worth a visit. The village in general Is also lovely so it is worth having a wander around while you're here.

Delicious quiche, sandwiches and salads. Finished with their famous sticky toffee pudding which were also delicious (we tried the original and chocolate versions and bought the ginger one to take home). Service is relaxed. Upstairs cafe can get a bit busy but everything seems available for take away. Definitely recommend if in the area.

We visited on a quest to find a family-sized version of Cartmel Sticky Figgy Pudding (most shops only have the small sized portions, and family sized sticky toffee). We found it, hooray! There were many artisan products on sale, lots of local produce and staff were helpful.

A great selection of mouth-watering sweet and savoury products is always available especially the delicious sticky toffee pudding, which now comes in a variety of flavours. Upstairs is a cafe which serves freshly made soup, light meals, cakes and hot and cold drinks.

The Cavendish Arms Cartmel is a charming hotel located in a 16th-century coaching inn, offering low-key rooms and a cosy restaurant. For an exceptional dining experience, guests can visit Simon Rogan's L'Enclume, which has been awarded two Michelin stars. Another option is Rogan and Co, known for its excellent cuisine and relaxed atmosphere.
Chanced across this whilst looking for a special pub in the area for my wife’s birthday and it didn’t disappoint. The food was amazing, all the way down to the portion sizes, in a market where the portion sizes are increasing and you feel bad for not finishing, these guys nailed it. The staff were friendly, especially a French waiter who had just started, he had a real respectful humour and great manner about him, honestly someone like this can make a great meal perfect. We had crab and salmon starters and halloumi fries with chilli jam. Then for our mains we had beef roasts and the beef was wow, just wow, perfectly cooked, nice and tender. The veg was amazing, buttery and perfectly cooked. The roast potatoes were a 4/5 but still great. And the gravy was lovely. Finally for pudding I had the pear tarte with biscoff ice cream. The whole thing was delicious. Will definitely return.
Pub R — Google review
Cartmel was a beautiful little village, with a few pubs, shops and racecourse. The hotel restaurant/bar is decorated beautifully and had lots of character. The beer garden at the back of the hotel, is very charming, with a river running at the bottom of it. We booked in for dinner on our first night. The service was great and the food was really tasty;however, quite expensive for the quality and quantity. The following morning we asked to sit with our friends who were also staying. The waitress made it clear that she was not happy with this and we had to ask to have clean glasses and our food took an awfully long time to arrive. The waitress was quite rude to be fair. The second morning was much better and a much better experience. We booked a small double room. I was expecting small; however, not tiny. We were unable to use the plugs by the bed, due to no space next to the cabinets. The window and sills, skirting boards etc need a good paint. There was an odd smell in the bathroom. The room was kept clean whilst we were there and the tea, coffee etc were a nice addition.

Beautiful food! Absolutely great steak and ale pie, so very much tender beef and tasty pastry top. Really lovely sticky toffee pudding, and a great pint of stout that went with it perfectly. Shout out to the lovely french guy who served us, made us feel right at home. If you love good food, go here!
Karen M — Google review
Nestled in a beautiful lake district village this pub is an ideal location for short stays or a quick bite. Our experience however was a little sour due to the comments received as we arrived. Me and my fiancee were using the cavendish as a bed for the night so we could visit L' enclume for her birthday. Upon arrival we were asked if we were dining with them and we excitedly said we were going to the other restaurant. This invoked a remark about our personal appearance which genuinely upset my faincee. She was already worried ( as we are basically working class people) about what outfit she had brought and how we wouldn't be good enough to visit a posh restaurant. These thoughts were already simmering under the service anyway, so to have someone point it out was just completely unnecessary in our eyes. Thankfully (after reassuring her for over an hour) the night went off without a hitch. It's a shame because the room was reasonably priced and the breakfast was delicious. We don't think, however, we will be returning on our future visits. I encourage people to give this place a chance though as the pub atmosphere is lovely. It was just ruined for us by the remarks of one member of staff. We know we don't have much money. This was a one time occasion, we don't need it reinforced to us.
Joe G — Google review
Absolutely awesome place. From the moment we arrived the service was brilliant! We sat in the garden next to the stream- what a location for a roast. The food was with us very quickly, was great quality and super tasty. With nice refreshing local pint as well 😜 Yes it’s a bit costly but well worth the money
Nick B — Google review
Food was delicious! Atmosphere was great. Burger was to die for (Brie and maple bacon what a combo). Food isn’t cheap but you pay for what you get and that is quality cooked food that tastes amazing. Great selection of wines, beers, and cocktails. Negroni was made well. Lots of people in so the pub had great ambience but wasn’t so busy you couldn’t hear yourself think. Would fully recommend visiting this place. Staff were all lovely and attentive. Even if they were rushed off their poor feet. Come here if you visit Cartmel I guarantee you’ll have a lovely time.
Ross D — Google review
An excellent experience for us both: The service was very friendly, and I was recommended the blade of beef which came with very tasty gravy and was slow-cooked for etreme tenderness. My wife had the seared Salmon, which she greatly enjoyed, followed up with the white chocolate cremeux, which was lovely. We really had a lovely time and would recommend this restaurant to anyone

Bar
The Kings Arms is a charming 18th-century inn located in Cartmel village, offering a cosy atmosphere with its open log fire, flagstone floors, and wooden beamed ceilings. The pub serves a variety of cask ales from different breweries, including the local Unsworths Yard micro-brewery. Their homely menu features classic British dishes made with locally sourced ingredients to support the Cartmel area's farms.
Absolute cracking Sunday lunch, it was absolutely fantastic and possibly one of the best roasts I've ever had. Great price at 2 for £34 also. Nice attentive staff, especially the young lad serving he was extremely polite and well mannered. If in the area and wanting food then this is the place to go
Sophie P — Google review
We had a lovely meal at the Kings Arms last night. I had the scampi and my husband had the pork belly. The food was well presented and tasty, and the serving staff were efficient and friendly. The pub is dog friendly with treats available on the bar for furry friends. My only negative comment would be that the portion sizes of the mains were on the small size given the price paid.
Vicky P — Google review
We visited for Sunday lunch and were really disappointed with the food and service. We ordered 4 roast dinners. One of us asked for a meat-free roast with an extra Yorkshire pudding instead, but we were still charged for a full beef dinner and an extra charge for the Yorkshire pudding. The roast potatoes were chewy and tasted like they had been cooked from frozen. Another meal was the “classic burger served with fries and coleslaw,” but it was honestly the worst burger we’ve had. The patties were grey and tasted like cheap fairground burgers, there was no salad on the bun, and when we asked about the missing coleslaw, we were told they didn’t have any and had just added extra fries instead. Overall, it felt like poor value for money and low effort on the food quality. Really disappointing experience — we won’t be rushing back.
Jasmine E — Google review
Booked for 8 of us to have Sunday Lunch. The roasts were lovely with tender slices of beef and proper homemade yorkshires. Tasty gravy to top it all off and plenty of veg. The young man serving us was very polite and kept checking up on us for drinks which was much appreciated. 10/10 thank you guys!

Cartmel is a beautiful village, and we stayed at a campsite just on the outskirts. After a fab day walking and exploring the area, we stopped by the Kings Arms for a drink. The service was great, and the team very friendly. Sitting outside in the sunshine was the perfect way to unwind.

The quality of the burger in The Kings Arms was truly disgusting. Like something you would get at a fun fair. The ‘Classic Burger’ is 2 frozen patties on a bun. No lettuce, tomato, relish, literally nothing. The chef should be ashamed of himself.

Renowned chef Simon Rogan has crafted a neighborhood bistro that maintains his signature flair while providing a more relaxed dining experience compared to his Michelin-starred flagship, L'Enclume. The restaurant's interiors exude Scandinavian elegance, creating a cozy atmosphere perfect for enjoying inventive dishes that highlight fresh Lake District ingredients.
We booked a meal for my partners birthday with family. The food was outstanding. I have intolerances to certain foods and the chef had prepared a menu to accommodate this. The staff are very knowledgeable, it is wonderful that they explain the contents of the dish and there is a feeling that they are proud to serve food from sustainable resources. We had the wine pairing: what an experience! The sommelier had a great knowledge of the grapes and how they worked with the dishes. You could see that she had a passion for her chosen career. We will return in an instant, it was a wonderful experience, thank you

Amazing food experience. My wife and I were here to celebrate her birthday. The restaurant is located in a cute little village and the ambience was just perfect. It felt like one of those novels. The wine pairing was really good. We would recommend that. We felt well taken care of by the wait staff. We would recommend being upfront and clear about your food restrictions, as they cannot accommodate changes on the day of.

I had a wonderful meal at Rogan & Co in Cartmel — excellent value for such a high standard of food. The scallop, beef, and rice pudding dishes were absolutely outstanding, with every bite full of flavour and finesse. The service was very good throughout, with two staff members serving most of our courses who were especially helpful, friendly, and enthusiastic. A great place to take my guests — relaxed atmosphere, exceptional food, and consistently impressive hospitality.

We had a wonderful lunch at Rogan&Co the other day, choosing the Set Lunch Menu. The food was excellent. The mushroom on rye cracker snack to start with was delicious. Problem with an amuse bouche is that it’s designed to be a single mouth full. We were very sad when it was gone and would have happily paid extra to get another one each. So yum!! The bread and butter is light fluffy carb heaven. The kale started wasn’t either of our favourites, but was still interesting and nicely cooked. We shared both mains, and ate probably the technically best cooked chicken either of us has ever eaten and a carrot purée we’ll both think about for a long time, but for me the vegetarian main (Ibis celeriac) won out. So very tasty! The desert was very nice, and managed to feel indulgent, yet light, which is what you need at the end of a hearty lunch. I’ve seen many reviews complaining about small portions, but I couldn’t disagree more. Neither of us had eaten any breakfast as we didn’t want to be too full to enjoy this lunch, and we left the restaurant very well fed, without feeling uncomfortably stuffed, which allowed us to actually enjoy our experience, and feel good about the money we had just spent on this delicious food, rather than regretting all of our life choices, because we’d eaten way too much. We tried all 3 mocktails available, and while we definitely had a favourite (the rosemary one, hands down!) they were all really fun and interesting, and I very much appreciated that they cost £8/£9/£10, as often you go somewhere where your cocktails cost £18-£20 and your mocktails £15, which always seems insulting. They also offered alcohol free G&Ts for £6.50, another thing I very much appreciated. We were a little bemused by the ever changing servers (being greeted, brought to our tables, offered water, brought and explained the menus, and having our order taken was done by 5 different members of staff) and glad when after the initial flurry we seemed to settle into mostly having one main server, and he was absolutely lovely! They all were, but it’s a LOT of social interaction trying to keep track off and make small talk with all 8 staff members on the restaurant floor at any given time, because any of them could approach you at any moment!, rather than just having to pay attention to 1 person. All around I would say the service was great, but for me personally a little too much. I am perfectly happy filling up my own water glass and for my napkin to remain unfolded when I go to the toilet. However I do appreciate that this is part of the style, so I can overlook it. All around, we had a lovely afternoon. While £50 a person for food isn’t something we can spend on lunch every week, we felt the price was pitched perfectly and that we received exactly the level of food that we were expecting for that money, and will very happily come back in the future!!

Dinner for my wife and I. Simply sumptuous. Wonderful relaxed setting. Fantastic staff, attentive, friendly and so knowledgeable about the food and wines. We had the three course menu with wine pairings. Each wine chosen to match your individual choice of course and they were perfect. The sommeliers were great at explaining each wine and how it complimented your choice. The food presented immaculately and sumptuous. You should definitely go, you will never regret it.

My partner and l had the most amazing experience and food here. We were staying locally on holiday and we were recommended by the owners of our cottage. The service and knowledge of the staff were outstanding, nothing was too much trouble. The food dishes were some of the best l have ever tasted and we enjoyed every single one. Great attention to detail. Would highly recommend you visit this restaurant if you are in the area.

Wow Stopped by on the way back to our hotel. A lovely sunny March day next to a field of lambs. Was treated to a sharing bowl of root veg crisps followed by samples of sausages ‘ burger bites. Absolutely delish! Thank you so much xx

Lovely experience. Went for an evening meal. We opted for the small plates. We had 4 between 2 of us and it was plenty. They were all delicious and really good value. Felt really fresh too. Had a sticky toffee sundae for dessert to share and it was amazing. All the staff were extremely friendly and had time for everyone. Highly recommend this place.

I just had to share my recent dining experience with you! Last week, we decided to visit a new spot because we heard that our favourite chef from a previous pub in the area was now working there. And oh my goodness, it was an absolute delight! I ordered the pie, and honestly, it was nothing short of amazing. If you haven't been yet, you definitely need to go and try it for yourself. The flavours were out of this world, and it truly exceeded my expectations. The service was impeccable, and the drinks were fantastic too. All in all, it was a wonderful evening, and I can't wait to go back. Thank you for such a memorable experience!

Great burgers and pie. Even the falafel starter was a hit. The only let down was the kids mac n cheese. The cheese sauce very processed on very soft pasta. I'd treat it as a large side. Perhaps smaller portion served with peas would have been nice. Staff very friendly.

Thanks to Abbie who looked after us today for Sunday Dinner. We had a Sunday Sharer which was quite enough for 2 adults and 2 children. Abbie told us the food might take a while as the chef needed to peel some extra spuds however the food still came in speedy time and was lovely. My mum who needs her food extra hot due to health reasons (thefood was already hot) was taken care of by Abbie with no hesitation. All in all a lovely experience.

My wife and I had a brilliant meal here. The menu is massively on trend, the chef is clearly very talented and had a passion for food. The staff were great. The chap that served is is from Middlesbrough and shares the same love that I do for a good chicken Parmo. Keep up the great work guys, very impressed! Thank you

Awful. Had 3 starters to share. Butter board nothing like described just a bit of butter on an old chopping board a couple of sliced red pickled onion, no hot honey, no pancetta just a bit of cold toast was expecting warm crusty bread. Crispy wings, slimy not crispy. Loaded fries - topping of pulled pork and cheese cold. Don't waste your money!!!!! In response to the reply I would have complained but no food check was done by staff at any time during my meal!! I was given 20 % which totalled £4.60!

Our first visit to Cartmel and found this hidden gem.of a shop. The lady was very nice and polite. Spotted a fantastic bronze statue of horses which my wife loved. Bought it and got a great deal. Will definitely be going back there next time we are up.

I was so very shocked to see Golliwogs prominently displayed in the shop. I immediately walked out. I've tried this morning to find a contract for them to suggest removing them but there is no contact info or social media site. Imagine my surprise when I saw another review from a year ago addressing this issue. They obviously don't care about offending others.

This is a fantastic place if you like a little bit off nostalgia, some brilliant old vintage clothing, interesting stuff your grandparents had. And dog friendly 😀
Darren — Google review
It is lovely, interesting and friendly, however we decided to leave after counting 4 Gollies in the space of 5 minutes. Love the other worldliness of these places, but it's time they read the papers. Items like gollies are offensive, hark back to a time when black people were stereotypes and comedy figures.

Rang the antique shop last week but phone wasn't working so rang tea shop next door and they passed phone to them. My niece had seen a lovely brooch that she said she liked. And I thought I would buy it for her . Spoke to lady who was polite. She said she would try and find it and ring me back. No phone call so rang tea shop again they put me on phone to woman who said she would look in shop and see if she could see it. No phone call back. All in all bad customer service.

"Our Shop by Simon Rogan" in Cartmel offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with a range of exquisite kitchenware on display. The friendly staff provides a warm welcome and helpful service, making it a must-visit destination. Additionally, for those unable to dine at one of the top Lake District restaurants, "Our Shop by Simon Rogan" offers 3-course Meal Boxes for delivery to homes or holiday cottages within the UK mainland.
We popped in for a quick browse as the shop displays looked so inviting. The store is filled with Simon Rogan’s own products and collaborations with other artisans as well as other fine kitchenware, produce and art. The lady in the shop was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Having popped in for a browse we came away £41 lighter with four gifts for friends and several treats for ourselves that we’re really looking forward to tasting. We ate the and stayed at L’Enclume years ago. This is a really lovely way of being able to take a bit of Rogan’s genius home with you.

Cartmel Priory, Church

Church
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Cartmel Priory, Church has a rich history dating back to the 7th century when King Ecgfrith of Northumbria gave the Cartmel lands to St Cuthbert. The priory was built by Augustinian Canons between 1190 and 1220 and remains as the local parish church despite being partially destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
A Serendipitous Encounter at Cartmel Priory Visiting Cartmel Priory was an unexpectedly delightful experience. Initially drawn by the sound of singing, we decided to step inside and were immediately welcomed by the warm, resonant tones of a choir in practice. This serendipitous encounter provided a lovely ambiance, enhancing the serene and historical atmosphere of the church. The Priory itself is beautifully maintained, reflecting the care and dedication of the local community. The interior is impressive, with historical elements that speak to centuries of worship and community gatherings. The cleanliness and the way the space is kept suggest that this church is not just a historical monument but truly the heart of Cartmel. It's clear that Cartmel Priory plays a pivotal role in the village life. The choir practice we stumbled upon is just one example of how the church remains active and integral to the community. This engagement is heartening in an age where many historic places of worship struggle with relevance and maintenance. Adding to the charm, there's a quaint little shop within the church. It’s stocked with a variety of religious items, local crafts, and souvenirs. The shop not only serves as a source of income for the upkeep of the church but also as a small museum of sorts, offering insights into the history and the ongoing life of the Priory. The experience was enriched by the friendly locals, the historical depth of the site, and the unexpected musical treat. Whether you're there for spiritual reasons, historical interest, or just passing through, this Priory is a gem well worth visiting. It encapsulates the essence of community spirit and heritage in a way that's both accessible and inspiring.

A fascinating church to visit. A lot to look see in terms. of architectural features and there is a real wow factor about coming in and seeing the huge east window. The misericords are interesting and it is a very atmospheric building.
Alain C — Google review
Cartmel Priory is one of those places that really takes you by surprise. From the outside, it’s beautiful and peaceful, tucked right into the heart of the village. But it’s when you step inside that you really feel the magic — the calm, the history, and the quiet beauty of it all. The building itself is stunning, with incredible stonework, stained glass windows, and little details that remind you just how old and special this place is. You can almost feel the stories in the walls. What I loved most is how welcoming it feels. It’s not just for history buffs or religious visitors — it’s a space that invites everyone in, whether you want to explore, sit quietly, or just soak up the atmosphere. Cartmel Priory isn’t a loud, flashy attraction — and that’s exactly why it’s so special. If you’re anywhere near the Lake District, it’s definitely worth a visit. Peaceful, powerful, and full of character.
Przemyslaw K — Google review
Super small Priory, with beautiful architecture and windows, and some very old artefacts. The tomb covers on the floor are also well worth reading, interesting and quite evocative. Well worth a visit, free entry, but it would be rather rude not to leave a donation.

An absolute delight. I found an old guide in a charity shop when planning our Lake District trip and I’m so glad we visited. It’s huge! Really impressive and guides in ten languages, lots to see and buy in the shop which is very well stocked. Wonderfully peaceful and restive as you’d expect from a working church (chaps please remove headgear when entering). We had a lovely hour here plus a walk through Cartmel which has more to offer than you might expect. A few lovely shops and pubs.

Whilst visiting the lakes we decided to go for breakfast after seeing some good reviews and those reviews were spot on. The ladies that run this cafe were so welcoming. L'Enclume is a sleek fine dining spot located in the countryside, offering an upscale menu featuring locally sourced and seasonal fare. The restaurant's 12-acre farm provides most of the ingredients, embodying a farm-to-fork ethos and delivering a taste of Cumbria in every bite.
This was an absolute treat. A pricey meal at just short of £700 for two, but WOW. The staff were impeccable. Myself and my friend have eaten in dozens of Michelin star restaurants and we both agreed that the staff were second to none. Friendly, warm, helpful. We were blown away. The food was outstanding. A real culinary journey and to date, the second best meal I’ve eaten in my life, only beaten out by Moor Halls inclusion on the buttermilk oyster. Albeit a VERY close second. Tasteful and simple decor with a surprisingly good atmosphere, given the sparse proximity of the tables arrangement. The little touches of the plant cuttings you take away with you and the wax sealed envelope containing the days menu was an excellent addition to an already delicious meal. Star of the day was the cheese gravel (tastier than it sounds) as I still have never tasted something that confused me and delighted me more. We loved it. 👏🏼

We cannot recommend it enough. It’s such a beautiful experience. From the moment you step through the doors, you are greeted by one of the staff. After taking a seat at your table, you are meeting more members of the staff. They are asking how’s your day been, asking about complimentary drinks, they even asked if I want a hook for my bag. Everything is thought of at this place. Amazing amazing amazing. There was an amazing sommelier with beautiful moustache which was responsible for our soft drinks pairing (there was only one drink which we were not a fan of). My favourite pairing was this camomile ice tea (?). Delicious. Evan, one of the team member, was great. Such a kind soul and so chatty, answered all of the questions and was telling us about the dishes if it was his turn to present them to us. We cannot thank the team at L’enclume enough. It felt like we are at home. We never dine at Michelin star restaurant before, it was our very first one. I was a bit nervous before coming in as I did not know what to expect. But the team and atmosphere were fantastic. We did not want to leave. I felt so emotional after stepping out on the street. Cause it felt like a dream. Something magical. Beautiful. Spectacular. Thank you.

By far the best culinary experience of my life. My husband and I have been to a few share of our Michelin restaurants, but L’enclume was the best experience we have ever had. We came to celebrate our marriage on our honeymoon and it was the most memorable experience. Service is TOP quality. The FOH staff actually want to engage in a conversation and this does not feel forced. My glass of water was consistently topped up without, never being even halfway empty. Food was absolutely exquisite. The strawberry dessert left me speechless. And the stunning Fresh Mint tea cart was amazing! I was at The Ritz where they did something similar but the experience fell subpar. L’Enclume had a massive variety of mints that actually tasted brilliant! The servers taking care of us were also keeping our taxi driver up to date with our time, so we can meet him exactly when we were done. We cannot wait to come back!!!!

This meal was such a treat, each and every course was super tasty and wasn’t like anything we’ve ever had before (we’ve been to other Michelin starred places). The staff, goodness, what can we say. They were so lovely, knowledgeable, attentive and they were all in sync in the way they moved around each other whilst serving customers. We felt so special and overall had a really lovely evening. Our reservation was for 630pm and we left around 1030pm. The staff arranged for our driver from Aynsome Manor (our bed and breakfast which was a 3min drive away and offer a concierge service) to collect us which was very much appreciated! Thank you L’Enclume x

L'Enclume is a culinary masterpiece. The dishes are exceptional, the skill of the chefs is outstanding, flavours are expertly balanced. It was a masterclass. Beautiful ingredients, prepared in a way you will never forget. Some personal favourites were the melt in the mouth mylor prawns, young Red baron onions and prserved truffle, Tunworth cheese ice cream, sea buckthorn tart, pineapple sage syrup, mint stone. Extremely clever cooking. Service was friendly and halpful, staff know their stuff. Portions were well thought out. Left with a full and happy stomach. For me it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, inspiring even. I would like to thank the whole team for such an excellent evening. Hope to return soon in the future

I had wanted to visit this venue for some time, and booked the Two Night Package with a Junior Suite. My wife and I were not disappointed. The whole experience was absolutely fantastic. Our dinner at Rogan & Co was excellent, at L’Enclume it was outstanding. The restaurant staff at both restaurants were exceptional. They are very friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. Both restaurants have a lovely relaxing environment, L’Enclume feels even more special. Our room was also excellent, very clean and of a high standard. The reception staff were all very friendly and helpful. We will undoubtedly return in the future, and would recommend this experience to anyone

I've been extremely fortunate to eat at multiple 1 and 2 Michelin star restaurants (20-30 maybe?), but this was hands down the best meal of my life!! Each of the courses was fantastic, with none of the courses not hitting the mark. There was no air of pretention or stuffiness that can come with fine dining, with the service an excellent balance between professional, yet friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is set in a lovely village in the Lake District, and we went for the package with a night's stay at one of their rooms in the village and breakfast at their sister restaurant the next day. This made the experience even more special, so I'd highly recommend this option if possible.

From the moment you step through the green doors, you are greeted into an oasis of perfection. The team look as though they have been waiting just for you. You feel special from the very first moment. We were welcomed individually, and asked if we were looking forward to our experience — an understatement, to say the least. We were incredibly lucky to be taken through to the Garden Room at the back, seated at the centre table beside the River Eea. Though it was dark outside, the setting was magical. In the middle of our table lay a wax-sealed envelope containing our personalised menus — each one beautifully tailored to our preferences and signed by key members of the team, wishing Patrick a happy birthday. Understated, thoughtful, and absolutely perfect. There were other birthday surprises throughout the evening, which I’ll keep secret — they deserve to be discovered in the moment. The precision of the service was extraordinary. Every movement — from setting down a glass to presenting each course — was perfectly synchronised. Somehow, every member of the team knew our water preferences, and not once did a glass sit empty, whether sparkling or still. We chose three different drink flights: Signature, Taster, and Non-Alcoholic. Valentin’s passion, knowledge, and personality elevated the entire experience — and his immaculate signature moustache was the perfect finishing touch. The team guiding us through the evening were remarkable. Their depth of knowledge, ability to read our personalities, and effortless sense of humour created a relaxed, joyful atmosphere. Each dish was described in exquisite detail, every flavour and texture perfectly balanced, every plate a work of art. As the evening progressed, you could feel the whole room exhale — a collective sense of calm and quiet wonder. If you were to try to find fault, you couldn’t. There is no Instagram showiness, no pretension — only pure, unfiltered excellence. You are invited to immerse yourself completely in the experience: sight, smell, touch, taste — every sense taken on a journey. The team operate with an unspoken harmony — a glance, a nod, a quiet understanding — ensuring that everything unfolds seamlessly. It’s as if the epicentre of meticulous precision meets perfect calm. I will never forget the evening we spent celebrating my husband’s birthday, nor the quiet walk home down the village street afterwards. We felt truly blessed to witness such passion and perfection, and so proud to have the daily heartbeat of the L’Enclume community right here in our village.

Inn
The Royal Oak Cartmel is a traditional village inn located in the heart of Cartmel. It offers en suite rooms, guest ales, and Italian-accented food. The pub has modern furnishings and a warm atmosphere, with a log fire for chilly days and an inviting beer garden for sunny weather. Additionally, it is known for its seasonal comfort food and casual dining experience.
Absolutely glorious little pub with rooms. Made smart recently but all the original features kept. Beautiful beams floor bar and walls. Lovely rooms, simple but smart and modern feel but again original features. And most importantly the amazing Fell Brewery beers on tap and hand pull. Very highly recommended.

Arrived on a, what looked like very busy evening. The staff explained that they were busy but they should be able to fit us in with a delay of about 25mins - sounded perfect with a drink while we waited. Staff then were able to get us in sooner - the food was on point and very tasty! Great atmosphere and brilliant staff. Would recommend! Thank you.

Have only ever been here for drinks before, sometimes sit in front of the log fire in winter or in their fantastic beer garden in summer. Had our first roast at the Royal Oak today and it was excellent - I had the lamb, my wife the beef and both were brilliant.

Not so simple dining when you’re expected to book in advance to be served, even when it’s very quiet in the restaurant! Also only informed of this bizarre and unique rule after we’d spent over £20 on a round of drinks. Told they’d sold out of food when groups were ordering at the same time as us, I understand their rule is you have to book but when people haven’t pre-ordered then surely they could’ve fit us in… clearly not bought in specially for each table so seems like a redundant rule. Wouldn’t have stung so much if the beer was decent and if the staff were understanding. I’d have taken a bit of roast beef they found in the back of the freezer… if only they were clear about having to book online to get any food!

Dined with friends and we all live locally. I had chicken Kiev, obviously home made and was lovely. Friends made a tapas selection from lite bites. Nothing pretentious just lovely food, great selection of beers and a warm welcome. It's not rocket science and yet so many places get it Soon wrong!

Absolutely a-mazing fresh food. Visited twice whilst on holiday as I wanted to try other meals on the menu. And I wasn't disappointed. Be sure to try the beer from their very own brewery, Fell brewery.

Friendly staff, tasty natural wines and very well kept beers. Great traditional pub food. Will visit again

Great pub, so much bigger than the entrance suggests, huge beer garden to the rear, cosy bar and dining areas. Called in twice over the weekend, lunchtime drinks in the garden, then to watch a band in the evening. Great atmosphere, looking forward to returning.

Parks
Grange-over-Sands is a charming town and civil parish located on the north side of Morecambe Bay in Cumbria, England. Situated just a few miles south of the renowned Lake District National Park, this picturesque destination offers visitors a delightful long promenade that runs alongside a vast saltmarsh. While the saltmarsh itself is not suitable for walking due to its hazardous nature, visitors can still enjoy the scenic views and take leisurely strolls along the promenade.

Bakery
Hazelmere Cafe & Bakery in Grange-over-Sands is renowned for its award-winning teas sourced from India and Sri Lanka. The menu features dishes made with local ingredients, such as potted Morecambe Bay shrimps and spicy Cumberland bangers from Higginson's butcher. While the tea room offers a refined experience, the bakery is where the best value lies. Visitors can expect a contemporary twist on English tradition with a wide selection of teas and delectable bakery items.
A café definitely worth visiting. Great selection of teas, coffee, food and sweet treats. The toasted sandwiches came with their own tomato and apple chutney which was great. The apple crumble with ice cream and the vanilla milkshake were particularly tasty. The staff were friendly and welcoming, adding to the atmosphere. A great stop in a lovely little village!

It was a good place for a coffee stop on our way up north to the lakes. Excellent selection of baked goods and cakes. We were more than happy with our coffee and quiet seat by the window in the bakery as the café part of the shop was very busy.

Despite the horrendous weather on the day of our visit, our mood was lifted by the great service at this establishment. The coffee, hot chocolate, scones and toasties were a delight and reasonably priced considering the quality of the establishment. We look forward to a return visit in better weather!

Visited this place with my family, had a amazing breakfast. The staff were all welcoming and fantastic. All their food was tasty, fresh and organic. Amazing vegan options too. Special shoutout to Marina for giving us exceptional service!!

Probably the best bakery I have been to anywhere. All local ingredients and recipes, huge list of teas from all parts of the world. I had never heard of half the cakes they had, but the Cumberland rum Nicky was fantastic and I will be trying to bake one soon. Also superb prices - around £6-7 for freshly made excellent cake.

Popped into Hazelmere cafe for a well deserved break. We had an amazing cappuccino with homemade fresh sandwiches 🥪 😋 very busy but a great service. Staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful.

This is a cracking café serving a decent range of food. Locateded in the lovely Grange Over Sands, just 60 seconds walk from the little train station, and a five min walk from the main high street. The café adjoins a top notch bakery where you can buy the best cakes in the area. You should certainly call in if visiting the area. Parking is a bit of a challenge.

We visited here for lunch with our dog, following a lovely walk across the promenade. The staff were all friendly, attentive, and professional. Our food was hot, delicious, and beautifully presented. We chose the ham and cheese toasties, myself with a small soup, and my husband chose chips. Our coffee and half scone with jam was equally delicious. The surroundings are first class, spotlessly clean using high-quality ingredients and crockery. Highly recommend. It's a rare find..they are exceptional. Thank you team.

The owners have created something very special here, we had an amazing stay and would definitely go back. The staff were incredibly friendly and greeted us with Bollinger champagne. We had a room with a beautiful view. Everything was 5 star from the bedroom with an extremely comfy bed and the quality of bedding was truly exceptional. Chauffeur service to and from the racecourse. Topped off with sumptuous breakfast with my favourite omelette ( Arnold Bennett). Thank you so much , we will definitely be returning.

Very dog friendly stay with a bed and doggy welcome box ready in the room! Tasty breakfast to follow in the morning too with lots of options available. Beautiful location and easy to drive from to explore local areas! Thank you for having us☺️

Amazing hotel a few minutes drive from Cartmel making it perfect when visiting there or nearby Grange over Sands. They also offer concierge transport to Cartmel which was great for us when we had a meal booked at L,Enclume. Thw hotel has lovely outside seating with very nice views. The room we stayed in had a slipper bath near the window which was lovely to relax in. It also had a decent size bathroom with Molten Brown shampoo, mouthwash etc etc. Would definitely recommend staying here rather than in Cartmel if you're looking for some quiet time in the fresh air.

Amazing stay! We stayed here overnight and went to L’Enclume for dinner. Our room was big, warm and super comfy. The bathroom was amazing!!! Massive bathroom with a fabulous shower. The staff were great and we were given a concierge service to and from L’Enclume. The breakfast was delicious. We would definetly come back here again!

My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights and it was absolutely fantastic! The staff were attentive and helpful and the breakfast was excellent in terms of the choices available, the quality of the produce and presentation. The bed was very comfortable and the concierge service made it very easy to travel to and from Cartmel even though the village is not too far to walk. We are looking forward to staying again! Thank you Callum, Stacey and team!

A genuine 5 star experience. A niche hotel on the edge of beautiful Cartmel. James can't do enough for you, meeting him for the first time is like seeing an old friend. I don't think there's anything that he wouldn't do for you. The complimentary chauffeur service is a proper god send and means you can park up and leave the rest to them [particularly on busy race days] . Can't recommend enough - we will definitely return!

It is a SUPER dog friendly Bed & Breakfast nestled in the heart of Cartmel Valley! The hotel is absolutely stunning & the staff truly make you feel spoilt with their evening turndown service & glass of champagne on arrival. They didn't forget about our dog either, she was also treated like royalty with her orthopedic bed, doggy welcome pack & treats throughout her stay. They even have a doggy shower room which is PERFECT after long walks in the Lakes!!! The breakfast was absolutely delicious and used local products from the area. In the evening we used the complimentary chauffeur service for a lift into the beautiful village of Cartel (we chose to walk back through the gorgeous fields surrounding the hotel). Honestly this was such a beautiful stay.
