Hanoi in 5 days

If you only have 5 days to spend in Hanoi, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, offers a glimpse into a complex history that will fascinate you. The "Paris of the Orient" is a medley of old and new. It is only in Hanoi where '50s-era Russian cars idle by colonial-era French villas and the hustle and bustle of motorbikes is juxtaposed with the serenity of lotus-filled lakes. Stroll the narrow streets of the Old Quarter and soak up the atmosphere with the locals as they shop, eat, and play.
With favorites like Essence Restaurant Original (since 2011), Vietnam National Museum of History, and Long Vi Dung - Nom Thit Bo Kho, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Koto Van Mieu Restaurant and The Banh Mi Station so you can get the best taste of Hanoi while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Tran Quoc Pagoda is a serene and picturesque Buddhist temple located on a small island in the West Lake of Hanoi. It is the oldest temple in the city, dating back to the 6th century. The pagoda features a stunning seven-story tower and various shrines with intricate statues and carvings that signify different stages in Buddha's life. Originally built on the bank of the Red River, it was later relocated to its current location due to river encroachment.
Tran Quoc Pagoda in Hanoi is one of the city’s most iconic and spiritually significant landmarks. Located on a small peninsula on West Lake, this ancient pagoda dates back more than 1,400 years, making it the oldest in the capital. Its striking red tower, rising gracefully against the water and sky, creates a picturesque scene that is especially captivating at sunrise or sunset. The pagoda complex is beautifully maintained, with carefully tended bonsai gardens, statues of the Buddha, and intricate carvings that reflect Vietnam’s rich Buddhist traditions. The main highlight is the 11-story stupa, each level containing precious statues and symbols of enlightenment. Visitors often find the tranquil setting a peaceful retreat from the bustle of Hanoi’s streets. For photographers, Tran Quoc Pagoda offers excellent compositions with its reflection on the lake, the contrast of red brick against green foliage, and the serene atmosphere created by incense smoke drifting in the breeze. It’s also an excellent place to capture daily life, as locals come to pray and make offerings. Overall, Tran Quoc Pagoda is not only a must-see cultural site but also one of the most photogenic locations in Hanoi, combining history, spirituality, and natural beauty in one remarkable setting.
Paul P — Google review
The place is serene and not much crowded. It is right at the main road and adjacent to a water body. Visited Tran Quoc Pagoda last week and absolutely loved it! The pagoda sits right on West Lake, so the view is amazing, especially in the morning when the water is calm and the temple reflects beautifully. The place feels so peaceful, perfect for a quiet stroll or some meditation. The architecture is stunning—lots of intricate carvings, Buddha statues, and the 11-story tower is impressive. It’s not a huge place, so you can explore everything in about 45 minutes to an hour. There are a few signs in English, but having a guide or just reading about it beforehand helps understand the history. Pros: peaceful, scenic, historical, photogenic Cons: can get crowded during weekends/festivals Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in Hanoi. A nice mix of culture, history, and serenity!

If you are visiting Hanoi and have interest in history, architecture or Buddhism, visiting Trấn Quốc Pagoda is highly recommended. It gives a mix of spiritual ambience, cultural heritage and scenic location. While it may not be the most secluded or off-the-beaten-path site (thanks to its popularity), it stands out because of its legacy and charm. Located reasonably close to central Hanoi, making it convenient to include in a city visit.Free to enter and open daily. For a full day outing, I’d suggest arriving early, spending some time in the temple grounds, then strolling around West Lake, visiting the surrounding cafés n possibly catching the sunset. If you prefer serenity, avoid the busiest hours. Dress appropriately: Shoulders and knees should be covered; remove hats inside halls if required. You need to take off ur footware when entering inside the Pagoda.
Neha K — Google review
Trấn Quốc Pagoda is an absolute gem and a must-visit for anyone seeking a moment of tranquility in bustling Hanoi. As the oldest Buddhist temple in the city, its history, dating back over 1,500 years, adds a profound depth to the experience. The serene setting, situated on a small islet in West Lake, is simply breathtaking. The majestic eleven-story red stupa, adorned with Buddha statues, rises beautifully against the water. Visiting at sunset is particularly magical, as the golden light bathes the entire complex, creating a truly sacred and picturesque atmosphere. Don't miss the Bodhi tree, said to be an offspring of the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment! It's a peaceful, spiritual, and beautifully preserved piece of Vietnamese heritage.

Tran Quoc Pagoda is a peaceful and beautiful place to visit in Hanoi. Located by the lake, it offers stunning views and a calm atmosphere. The architecture is impressive, and it’s one of the oldest pagodas in Vietnam. A must-visit for those interested in culture and history. Best enjoyed in the early morning or evening for a quiet experience. Entrance is free.
Chun — Google review
Pagoda has so much history and it has a fabulous architecture. You can walk on the bridge and see a wonderful view of the lake. This is definitely a to do spot in Hanio. It has a couple of historical temples inside you must see them before leaving. You can take good shots of images outside and inside of the place. Under the tree is probably a hot spot!
Bedri — Google review
I liked this place especially because of the history behind it. It has a tree in the centre which is considered very holy and has some link to India helping as well to the city of Vietnam. It is believed that if you pray and make three rounds around the tree your wish will be granted. A lot of other Buddha workship places are there and many devotees come always. A very peaceful and culture filled placed.
Simon M — Google review
Trấn Quốc Pagoda, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Hanoi, is a serene sanctuary nestled on a small islet in West Lake. Originally founded in the 6th century under the name Khai Quốc (National Founding), the pagoda was relocated in the 17th century to its current picturesque spot. Its most striking architectural feature is the 11-story red stupa known as Bảo Tháp Lục Độ Đài Sen, built in 1998, with each level housing a statue of Amitabha Buddha. The grounds also feature a sacred Bodhi tree, grown from a cutting of the original tree in India where the Buddha achieved enlightenment. As a spiritual and cultural symbol, Trấn Quốc Pagoda attracts both local Buddhists and visitors seeking a tranquil escape from the city's bustle, offering beautiful sunset views over the lake. do not forget to visit here at the sunset time.

Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum

Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum is a significant historical site and tourist attraction in Vietnam. It holds the embalmed remains of Ho Chi Minh, the Vietnamese leader, and offers insights into his life and the country's liberation process under his leadership. Visitors are encouraged to explore Ba Dinh Square, where Vietnam's First Independence Day was celebrated, as well as other nearby attractions such as Ho Chi Minh Museum, House on Stilts, Presidential Palace, and One Pillar Pagoda.
A fascinating and respectful place to visit. The complex is well maintained and the atmosphere is calm and dignified. The queue was long but moved quickly, and the guards were very professional. It took around two hours in total, including security checks and walking through the site. It was quite hot and humid, so bring water and dress comfortably. A meaningful and highly recommended experience to learn about an important part of Vietnam’s history.
F S — Google review
Great management to get the people to visit inside. It’s quite a long walk from the entrance, but not too long. There was very little to no wait even there were lots of visitors. Inside I got to see a very well preserved body of Ho Chi Minh. It was a very brief visit as all visitors had to keep moving, but overall a great experience. In this complex I also visit other interesting places like the one pillar pagoda, Ho Chi Minh’s house (with a fee), and Ho Chi Minh Museum (with a fee), spending around good 2-3 hours here. Please check the dress code before your visit.
Natthaphol — Google review
Beautiful grounds with the palace and mausoleum. We went right when it opened at 7:30 and there were no crowds. It was easier to appreciate the grandness of it all without tons of your groups. Much of the grounds are blocked off, but guards were friendly and made it clear where to go.
Leslie M — Google review
I'm Anthony, and these are my kneecaps. I was allowed in. My shorts were just touching the tops of my kneecaps. I asked the guard if it was a bit higher, then demonstrated to him, would I be let in? He said no. The security is strict at the metal detector. Ba Dinh Square itself is free to visit. The Ho Chi Minh Museum and the Stilt House area are an additional charge. Viewing the HCM mausoleum from the outside is free. There was a very nice volunteer tour orginazation giving free tours. Definitely recommend reaching out to them.

I so loved the deep culture of this place and respect the Vietnamese people give to their first president. He is often known as an Uncle too in every Vietnamese family. Good place to visit and see once when at Vietnam
Simon M — Google review
Visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum — a truly respectful and historical site in Hanoi. Entry is *free of charge*, and no tickets are required. The atmosphere is calm and well-organized, with clear security procedures. It’s a must-visit to understand Vietnam’s history and pay respects to their beloved leader. Dress modestly and arrive early as it can get crowded.
Chun — Google review
Good place to visit for the history. Mausoleum ground was a big place and can take a stroll around the place. To visit the palace need a ticket. Like the one pillar pagoda, no fee. Best to wear attire with sleeves and pants or skirts cover the knee. Need to check their opening time especially mausoleum have only morning visiting hours which close by 11am. There is security check but q clear fast. No water or chewing gums allowed inside.
Su Y — Google review
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi is an absolute must-visit. Upon arriving in Vietnam, we saw how highly Ho Chi Minh is revered, but we didn’t fully understand why. Visiting his mausoleum, the museum inside, and taking a guided tour for just 40,000 VND was incredibly valuable for gaining a deeper understanding of the country, its culture, and its history. I highly recommend visiting if you’re in Hanoi, as it really opens your eyes to the country’s past. The mausoleum entrance itself is free, closes at 11.30a.m., so it’s best to go early

The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long is a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases Vietnam's rich history and architectural grandeur. Dating back to the 11th century, this complex features stunning buildings and sculptures, including an impressive tower and a stone dragon. Visitors can explore the remnants of Hanoi's imperial dynasties, including a fascinating bunker used by North Vietnam’s military during the Vietnam War, complete with historical maps and communication booths.
The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long in Hanoi is a fascinating historical site that offers a deep look into Vietnam’s imperial past. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the citadel has stood as a political and cultural center for over a thousand years. Visitors can explore ancient gates, archeological remains, and restored halls that showcase the layers of history from different dynasties, most notably the Ly, Tran, and Le periods. The complex is not only architecturally impressive but also rich in symbolism, reflecting the evolution of Vietnamese culture and governance. Highlights include the Doan Mon Gate, the Flag Tower of Hanoi, and the underground wartime headquarters used during the 20th century. The citadel’s expansive grounds make it a peaceful place to walk, offering a balance of heritage, gardens, and archaeological displays. For photographers, the site presents endless opportunities: weathered walls, ancient stone pathways, traditional gates, and the striking contrast between historic structures and modern Hanoi in the background. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer, adding depth and atmosphere to the ruins and gardens. Overall, the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long is a must-visit for history lovers and photographers alike, offering both cultural insight and unique visual inspiration.
Paul P — Google review
A very peaceful historical site with many monuments and beautiful views. There weren’t many tourists, so we were able to fully enjoy the area, explore all the buildings, and even visit the underground bunker. Definitely worth seeing for anyone interested in history and unique architecture, offering both a quiet atmosphere and fascinating sights that make it a memorable experience. .
Radek V — Google review
Honestly, when I think of the many incredible UNESCO World Heritage sites in Asia, this was something of a disappointment. I understand it's cultural importance and archaeological value but it isn't getting very much care and attention. I kid you not when I say that it's a rubbish dump in one corner and a great many of the buildings are in a state of considerable disrepair. I would happily pay more to enter in order that they spend some money on upkeep. Also the garden in front is basically a stage for sports, concerts and events with a stage completely blocking the view of the principle building. It definitely has atmosphere, some interesting artifacts and great history but I am not convinced they are doing it justice.....
Guy B — Google review
Fascinating place with so much history. Between the photos of “then and now” you can see the old majesty of the citadel. As others have said it appears much of the archaeological site is in much need of funding but well worth the visit. Ensure you see the bunkers as well. An eye into a much more recent past.
Mattie C — Google review
The Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long is a truly extraordinary and unmissable UNESCO World Heritage Site that forms the spiritual and political heart of Hanoi. This vast complex offers a fascinating journey through over a thousand years of Vietnamese history, with layers of culture from the Lý, Trần, and Lê Dynasties all in one place. Walking through the magnificent Đoan Môn (Main Gate) and admiring the ancient Hanoi Flag Tower is a powerful experience, making you feel the grandeur of the imperial past. However, the site's real strength lies in its blend of history, from the 11th-century foundations and the famous Stone Dragon Steps of the Kinh Thiên Palace, to the D67 Revolutionary House and Bunker used by the Vietnamese military leadership during the war. The atmosphere is peaceful and offers a wonderful escape from the city noise. I highly recommend taking the time to explore the archaeological excavation site across the street to fully appreciate the depth and complexity of this incredible historical landmark. It is a profoundly moving and educational visit!
Anujith V — Google review
This is one of the must see for those history buff and loves old architecture and green space. Else, avoid this place as it might bored you after taking pictures. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and served as the political heart of Vietnam for nearly 13 consecutive centuries. A lot 2-3 hours to be able to enjoy the whole complex. Bring water and food bites in case you feel thirsty and hungry. Admission fee as follows: a. Adults: 70,000 VND (~2.66USD) b. Children under 16: Free admission
Mostly C — Google review
Though not huge the Imperial Citadel is good to explore. Most of the buildings have been restored, though the North Gate and the Flag Tower are still original. The North Gate is a nice place for people watching; locals come here to do photoshoots with flowers. The bunkers that were used during Vietnamwar give additional historic value. Local schools come to the citadel for day trips. The kids might ask you to do a short interview to practice their English. I thoroughly enjoyed that. I visited here on a weekday and it wasn't too busy. Even though entry is ticketed (100.000 VND), this doesn't seem to be ensured too strictly (as in: you could easily walk past the entry gate without buying a ticket). Also please be aware of a scam that specifically is targeting tourists. I was approached by a man asking me where I came from. I'd considered that he was part of the school trip. First he asked me to fill a questionnaire. Then he indicated he was collecting donations for the Red Cross, even showing me a (fake) badge. He showed me a notebook with all previous donations. It showed big amounts, like $20, €40, 500.000 VND. He proceeded asking a donation from me too. I just gave a small amount (50.000 VND) though he tried to get more. Then he quickly buzzed off and I realized I was scammed. Please be aware of this scam.

Hanoi Train Street

Hanoi Train Street is a unique attraction that has gained immense popularity in recent years. It features a section of the train track where locals have set up coffee shops, offering visitors the experience of sipping coffee while watching trains pass by just a few feet away. This spot has become a trendy destination for young photography enthusiasts, with its vibrant fresco art wall and the stunning railway located above the main road.
Hanoi Train Street – A Unique and Beautiful Experience Hanoi Train Street is truly one of the most beautiful and fascinating places to visit in the city. It’s basically a simple railway line, but Vietnamese people know exactly how to turn something ordinary into something amazingly attractive. Both sides of the street are lined with cozy cafés, where people relax with beer, coffee, music, selfies, and the lively atmosphere around them. The café owners are incredibly welcoming and friendly, which makes the whole experience even more special. I visited a café called Coffee Chill 96, and the staff there were extremely warm and kind. The prices are also quite reasonable, which is a plus. The only downside is the train timing — if the train gets delayed, you might end up waiting for quite a long time. But even then, the café owners never pressure you to keep buying anything. You can simply sit, relax, and enjoy the street vibes. Overall, Hanoi Train Street is a must-visit spot for anyone exploring the city — a perfect blend of culture, community, and charm.
Nabin P — Google review
Hanoi Train Street offers one of the most memorable experiences in the city. What looks like an ordinary railway becomes a vibrant, photogenic spot thanks to the way local residents have transformed it with charm and creativity. The narrow lane is lined with small cafés, each with its own vibe, where visitors sip drinks, take photos, enjoy music, and soak in the energy of the place. The welcoming attitude of the café owners really adds to the atmosphere and makes you feel at home. If you’re exploring Hanoi, Train Street is absolutely worth a stop. It’s a lively blend of culture, community spirit, and unique local flavor.
Mrs D — Google review
One of the places that you must see and visit when in Hanoi. There are a lot of cafes that you can hangout and have a refreshing drink while waiting for the train arrives. Don’t forget to save one or couple beer caps. Let it lay on top of the railway and once the train comes, it’ll flatten it. Voila! You’ll have a small remembrance to keep from Train street.
Kai Z — Google review
It’s a worthy experience, with train passing so close to you. Decoration and people makes the vibe of this place. One time experience is must. Timings of the train keeps changing and hence recommended to check before and reach at least 45 minutes earlier to bag a good place. Usually place is crowded if you reach late.
Varun A — Google review
A one-time experience to enjoy a coffee or beer while a train passes inches away. However, shopkeepers are quite rude and won’t let you stand near their shops unless you buy something and if you’re two people, they force two separate orders. It’s also risky during the train pass, so be very cautious. The street is close to the Old Quarter, and you can walk there easily. Train timings vary by day, so check the schedule before visiting to avoid waiting. Worth seeing once, but overall a bit overrated.
Rahul N — Google review
Right in the center of the city, I stumbled upon it while walking around. I went when no trains were scheduled, so I could take photos freely. There are tightly packed seats along the tracks where I could have a coffee or beer, and the prices were reasonable. If I had more time, I would’ve stayed for a drink—probably people-watching more than waiting for a train.
Jin — Google review
What an incredible experience. You do not realize how close these trains really are. Being a traveller from CANADA, it was a once in a lifetime experience because this would never be allowed. This is a MUST DO when in Hanoi. We did not buy tickets. We just sat at the open air bars and restaurants right beside the track.
Sheldon C — Google review
Unique experience in a very friendly, local yet chic area. I love their decorations and vibe. We visited No 20 coffee shop, the owners were very warm, sincere and attention. They have train schedule hanging in front of the coffee shops. About 10 minutes before the train showed up, they will give warning and help everyone to get ready. It's truly a one of a life time experience.

The Temple of Literature in Hanoi is a significant cultural and educational site, often considered one of the city's most appealing historical attractions. It comprises two architectural complexes: Van Mieu, a Confucian temple dedicated to revered figures, and Quoc Tu Giam, Vietnam's first university. Surrounded by stone walls and old trees, the temple exudes a peaceful atmosphere despite its location on a bustling street.
Temple which showcases the importance of education in traditional Vietnamese culture. Also notable is the extensive Chinese influence on Vietnam over time, and the localization of it into Vietnamese culture over the years. Much of what we see today was reconstructed - notably with help from the Australian government. The majority of the temple was destroyed over the ages, and during the Vietnam war. The temple, impressively so, makes a point of incorporating local artists and art, and not merely historical items to complement the presentation. For the front of this temple, the modern artistic representation of Chu Van Anh was quite notable. Highly recommend devoting some of your time in Vietnam to visit this significant historical landmark. Do not recommend renting the audio guide, which seems to simply narrate the information on placards within. Will further elaborate on separate reviews within.

The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám) is an absolute must-see in Hanoi, offering a beautiful and tranquil escape from the city's hustle. This isn't just a temple; it is the site of Vietnam's first national university, founded in 1070, and it wonderfully captures the nation's profound and enduring respect for education. Walking through the five courtyards, you are treated to stunning, well-preserved traditional Vietnamese architecture, especially the iconic Khue Van Cac (Constellation of Literature Pavilion), which is so significant it's the symbol of Hanoi! The shaded green gardens and the central Well of Heavenly Clarity provide a genuinely peaceful atmosphere. Be sure to see the 82 ancient Doctoral Stelae, set upon stone turtles, which honor the successful graduates of royal exams—a moving testament to centuries of scholarship. It is a rich, calming, and deeply meaningful historical site that beautifully tells the story of Vietnam's cultural heritage.

It must have been graduation photo day because it was unbelievably crowded, and there was another event happening inside as well. Still, it definitely felt like I was visiting a major landmark. It’s a place that becomes much more enjoyable when you read the explanations. Since it has a long history and many stories related to Confucius and his disciples, I recommend reading the brochures or information panels. *Free admission for children under 13. *Adults: 70,000 VND.

Visiting Văn Miếu Quốc Tử Giám was one of the highlights of my time in Hanoi. Even though it is a popular sight, the atmosphere inside is surprisingly calm, with traditional gates, lotus ponds, old trees and courtyards that make you feel like you’ve stepped into another century. It is easy to understand why this place was chosen as Vietnam’s first university. The grounds are beautifully maintained and each courtyard has its own character. My favorite part was the area with the stone steles carried by turtles. They tell the stories of the scholars who studied here hundreds of years ago and give the whole place a sense of real academic history. The main temple dedicated to Confucius is also worth spending time in, with beautifully detailed architecture and a very peaceful interior. It is a great site for anyone interested in culture or history, but also for people who just want a quiet break from Hanoi’s busy streets. If possible, come early in the morning when it is cooler and less crowded. The whole visit takes about one to two hours, and it is one of those places that leaves you with a calm and appreciative feeling afterwards. I can highly recommend it as an essential stop when exploring Hanoi.

The Temple of Literature in Hanoi is a remarkably serene place, filled with graceful architecture and a quiet sense of history. Its courtyards, ancient trees and traditional pavilions create an atmosphere that encourages reflection. It is one of the few spots in the city where you can genuinely feel connected to centuries of learning and culture, and it leaves you with a lasting appreciation of Vietnam’s scholarly heritage.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Temple of Literature A beautiful and peaceful place to visit in Hanoi. The Temple of Literature is rich in history and culture, and walking through the grounds feels like stepping back in time. The gardens are stunning — immaculately kept, calm and full of traditional Vietnamese architecture that photographs beautifully. It’s fascinating to learn that this was Vietnam’s first national university, dating back nearly a thousand years. The stone steles, pavilions and courtyards all tell a story, and there are plenty of signs and displays to help you understand the significance of each area. Despite being a popular attraction, it still feels serene and respectful, offering a quiet break from the busy city outside. It’s a great place to wander, soak up the atmosphere, take photos and appreciate Vietnam’s deep scholarly and cultural traditions. A must-visit in Hanoi for history lovers, families, or anyone wanting a peaceful escape and a deeper connection to the city’s heritage. Highly recommend!

The Temple of Literature is truly one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I visited in Hanoi. Built in 1070, it is known as Vietnam’s first national university, dedicated to Confucius and the values of knowledge, discipline, and moral character. Despite being nearly a thousand years old, the compound is incredibly well-preserved — from its iconic red gates to its quiet courtyards, lotus ponds, and traditional Vietnamese architecture. The moment you step inside, the noise of Hanoi fades away and is replaced by a calm, almost sacred atmosphere. What stands out the most is its sense of wisdom and history. The stone steles carried by turtles — engraved with the names of ancient scholars — are powerful reminders of how deeply Vietnam values education. Every corner feels symbolic, meaningful, and surprisingly photogenic without losing its authenticity. Overall, the Temple of Literature is a must-visit in Hanoi. Whether you come for history, culture, architecture, or simply a peaceful break from the busy city, this place leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommended. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Absolutely worth the visit! The entrance fee is 70,000 vnd per adult. The Temple of Literature is one of the most culturally and historically significant landmarks in Vietnam. The grounds are peaceful and beautifully maintained, with traditional Vietnamese architecture that gives you a real sense of history. It’s a great place to slow down and escape the noise of the city for a bit. Just make sure you’re properly dressed: no crop tops, shorts, or tank tops. If you’re interested in Vietnamese culture, education, or history, this place is a must-see.

Koto Van Mieu Restaurant, located across from the Temple of Literature, is not just a place to enjoy Vietnamese cuisine but also a social enterprise with a noble mission. The restaurant aims to provide job opportunities for marginalized youth and offers training in all aspects of running a 5-star restaurant.
Amazing!! We came back the next day for round two. Everything we ordered was delicious and beautifully presented. I especially liked the prawn and pomelo in leaves appetiser. Our server Cha from K45 was great.

This restaurant is part of a training programme for young people, and as such, the service is excellent. The food and drinks were also extremely good, although possibly slightly adjusted for western tastes. A set meal costs 300-350K per person (min 2), and gives a good range of dishes.

Incredible social impact organization that spreads kindness to the underserved through food (and art). I had the kombucha, two way pork, and fruit. I heard the coffee is stellar. Everything was amazing. For North Americans, the booch is mild fizziness which I enjoyed. I also couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs while enjoying my food. I left this place feeling good both in the soul and tummy :-) Lastly, An and team were great, very responsive, and helpful with the menu which doesn't disappoint. I'm wrapping up a solo trip but will absolutely return with the family to enjoy this amazing place.

Amazing food and truly lovely people! It's so nice to see they help and train disadvantaged youths. They have great gifts that support other charities as well, highly recommend!

Noisy, poor service, food is ok but not worth going. They gave us a table close to the door, constantly people walk in and out, even the cleaning lady with trash bins!!! And they don’t allow us to change table. Even if there are other tables upstairs. Their service is poor, the staff seems don’t know what they’re doing, they provided towels to some tables but not the other. Then they don’t look for tables, two of the staff stacked in one table while there are two other tables are calling … They seems has nothing to do. The food is ok but nothing special. In short, Don’t need to go.

This is a charity that helps street kids get a career in hospitality by training in kitchen, service, and managerial skills. We arrived at lunch without a booking and they accomodated us without problem on the ground floor, which i think was a blessing given the number of tours going upstairs. The food is next level. The menu is a modern twist on traditional. We opted for the more expensive of the two set menus, and it was fantastic. I had what might have been the tenderedt steak I've ever eaten. Update, because I forgot to add. Our service was first class. The young ladies who served our table were highly professional and courteous. I would expect this level of service in a restaurant of the highest order. Keep doing what you're doing (very well). Ethical eating at its very best.

Walked in off the street knowing nothing about the place. The staff were so good and obliging and speak reasonable english. The food and drinks were healthy and very tasty. The cleanliness and ambience is top class. This place is a credit to all involved. Highly recommend.

We stopped for breakfast on our way to the Temple of Literature. The place is bright and cheerful. The restaurant is part of ST25 by KOTO which promotes training of youth and features handicrafts from local artists. I spent more on souvenirs than I did on breakfast. Highly recommend.

The Banh Mi Station

Vietnamese restaurant
If you're wandering through Hanoi and craving a delicious bite, The Banh Mi Station is an absolute must-visit. This eatery offers a unique twist on the traditional Vietnamese banh mi, featuring fillings like nem chua (fermented pork), fried potatoes, and sweet chili sauce that create an explosion of flavors with every bite. The bread strikes the perfect balance between crispy on the outside and soft within, making it a delightful experience for your taste buds.
We’ve tried so many Banh Mi places in Ha Noi, but this one is by far the best! The bread is perfectly crispy on the outside, soft inside, and the filling is juicy and bursting with flavor. Every bite is a real explosion of taste. Highly recommended!

Quyen was amazing server. Highly recommend the combo and request the drip coffee. It’s worth the wait if you like it strong and flavorful. The Bahn mi was absolutely perfect, crunch yet soft bread and slightly spicy. Yum yum yum

There are loads of places to go for Banh Mi’s in Hanoi, this is a good quality option. It’s only been open one year (Nov ‘25), the BBQ pork with pate is lovely. I had my first salted coffee, it was different but I like to try different things. Recommend!

The bread is crispy and you can choose spicy taste. I ordered spicy pork bbq . And it is very nice. I will visit again here. Staff is very kind and speak English well

Tried a lot of the popular Banh mi spots in Hanoi, this is by far the best, with the most loaded fillings, spicy sauce and soft bread. Still can’t figure out why this place isn’t more well known!

ate banh mi in hanoi for the first time and this is the first place we got it from. the banh mi we ordered were recommended by dat, who served us as well, and were very very good. highly recommended if you could come by!

Do not make the same mistake other tourists make, forget any other banh mi places with mama or 25s in their name, those are not worth the wait. Instead come here and get the saigon and you will definitely not regret 😤

Bar
Standing Bar is a popular spot among young people in Hanoi for enjoying craft beer and delicious grilled food. The bar offers 19 taps of Craft Beer / Cider, featuring unique flavors like Hoi Hoi IPA, Independence Shout, and Saigon Bose. With a modern design and an open balcony overlooking Hoan Kiem Lake, the two-floor establishment provides a cool and fresh atmosphere.
Been here more than 10 times! Super crew! Lovely sausages. As always awesome craft beers.
Haritheran N — Google review
Standing Bar in Hanoi is a fantastic spot for craft beer enthusiasts! Their selection of craft beer deserves a full 5 stars—19 rotating taps featuring an impressive variety of local brews, from seasonal specialties to hard-to-find limited editions. It’s a dream for anyone wanting to explore Vietnam’s growing craft beer scene. The ambiance is cozy yet lively, with the upstairs terrace offering a gorgeous view of Trúc Bạch Lake. It’s a great place to hang out, especially at sunset. The Japanese-inspired standing concept is fun, but don’t worry—there’s plenty of seating if you prefer to relax. The food menu is creative and well-thought-out, with a mix of Vietnamese and international flavors, but I felt it could use a bit more consistency. While the grilled skewers and tapas were delicious, some dishes lacked the boldness of flavor you’d expect for the price. Events like live music and vinyl DJ nights add a unique charm, making it a vibrant hangout spot. The service, while friendly, was a bit slow during peak hours, which slightly impacted the overall experience. Overall, Standing Bar is a must-visit for beer lovers in Hanoi. Just a touch more attention to service and consistency in the food could make it a five-star experience.

We had a little snack with the mini burgers... they were definitely mini. Plenty of drink options for craft beer lovers. Nice views and good spot

Walking past this place to get to another but decided to stop for a craft beer and some food, we had the juicy peach and cheekie Blonde beers, for food we had the craft sausage combo and was so tasty! staff are helpful and attentive, great views of the lake with sunset. Couldn’t ask for more!

🍺 🕺 💃 Good beer, good music, and great views of the lake. They have a great selection of beer, different types and different breweries. I recommend going upstairs in the balcony if the weather permits. They also have a ton of food options to snack on while you drink!

Nestled in the heart of Hanoi, La Badiane is a culinary gem that beautifully marries Vietnamese and French flavors. Their set lunch menu features delightful dishes like crabmeat brandade infused with dill and a refreshing yoghurt mousse drizzled with passion fruit sauce—perfect fuel for an adventurous bike ride around the stunning Ho Tay (West Lake).
This was highly recommended by a friend and we were not disappointed. Service was excellent and very attentive. Love the ambience and the vibe. Such a lovely restaurant for couples, too. We ordered the 3 and 4 course set meals. Delicious and quite big portion. Even the chef greeted us at almost every table after eating. We were surprised that there was no service charge.

I had too much meats on the day itself before entering. Saw the 4 courses of Vegetarian options, I did not hesitate to order it immediately. Every single dishes was crafted with efforts, nicely touch, great tastes. Never had the chance to taste greenery beyond the next level. Every dishes was well described by the staffs. Love the single details explanation from the team. Services was attentive, refill my glass promptly with the bottle of water ordered. This is a truly not to be missed restaurants in Hanoi 🇻🇳
Oscar M — Google review
La Badiane is a charming French restaurant tucked inside a restored colonial villa on Nam Ngu Street. The atmosphere feels elegant but not stiff — refined enough for a date or a business lunch, yet still relaxed and welcoming. The food is well-executed French cuisine with a modern touch. Seafood dishes, foie gras and desserts are consistent highlights, beautifully plated and balanced in flavor. The wine list is thoughtful, and the staff are professional and happy to recommend pairings. Prices are on the higher side for Hanoi, and the menu plays it safe — don’t expect groundbreaking creativity if you’re used to top-end French dining. The space is cozy and intimate but might feel a bit tight for large groups. Overall, it’s a reliable spot for a polished dining experience in Hanoi — great service, quality food, and a quiet, refined vibe without being overly formal.
Quynh V — Google review
Located in a quiet street, we found oursleves walking into a charming colonial "villa" through a lush courtyard that opens into a casual and elegant fine dining space. The 3-course lunch set has every dish artistically plated. Starters - Le Tzatziki is a beetroot ravioli with cucumber tzatziki, pink berry biscuit and kumquat vinaigrette. A uniquely beautiful dish. Flavours were light, vibrant and fresh. - Le Veloute is a cauliflower veloute that was creamy, rich and comforting. The snail butter mushroom parmentier added texture and earthiness to it. Mains - La-Gambas features breaded sesame prawns served with herb salad, sweet potato mousseline, green asparagus and a tomato-smoked parika coconut milk cream. An interplay of flavours and texture. Not bad but not mind-blowing. - La Paëlla is a scallops and mussels risotto with grilled chorizo, piperade and cognac bisque emulsion. It's rich with flavour of the sea with some tang and spicy-smokiness. A little more heat could help to cut through the richness. Desserts - La Banane tasted familiar like pisang goreng (fried banana). It's decadent with some crunch though a tad sweet. The taste of rum was quite muted but love the creamy coconut ice cream. - Le Tiramisu, La Badiane's version, has the layers and taste of my favourite dessert. Just that it was overly sweet and could do more of the liquor, coffee and chocolate to balance the sweetness. Service was exceptional and thoughtful. They asked if we would like to take a break before serving the desserts. Even giving us a complimentary dessert (love the sorbet!) as my friend indicated "Celebrating friendship" as the occasion. Definitely caught us by surprise and brought a smile to our faces. No wonder there were rose petals on our table.

Did a walk in and we had the set lunch (2 items). Good sized and nicely plated for the food. Service staffs are helpful and attentive. My friend raved about the tomato soup which you can check it out. Worth a visit if you are in Hanoi.

I came across this Michelin-recommended French restaurant during a business trip to Hanoi, and it was truly impressive. The dishes were beautifully executed and exceeded my expectations. What I really appreciate is that the restaurant isn’t only friendly to meat eaters, also offers great options for vegetarians, making it an excellent choice for gatherings with friends who have different dietary preferences.
Roger H — Google review
I really enjoyed our 5 course meal! I chose the Degustation Signature menu and just swapped my dessert for the Degustation Fusion Fusion, and I loved almost everything. I wasn’t really a fan of the foie gras, but other than that every course was so good. I was so full afterward that I couldn’t even finish my steak. Our server Binh was so kind and the service was excellent!

Pretty disappointed with the food here for this price range in Vietnam. I had the five-course meal — the scallop dish was the best. The Wagyu beef honestly tasted like the braised beef brisket you get in Taiwanese beef noodle soup.

Day 2

Northeast side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Long Biên Bridge, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Cau Giay Park. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Karaoke bar
Long Biên Bridge, a stunning historical landmark in Hanoi, is not just an architectural marvel but also a vibrant hub of activity. As night falls, the area transforms into a lively gathering spot where street vendors offer delicious local snacks and goods. Beneath the bridge lies a hidden gem—a lush island teeming with banana farmers who supply fresh produce to city markets.
After a day of exploring the town, we decided to unwind at Bar Dinh, choosing to dine and lounge without prior reservations. To our pleasant surprise, we were seated immediately on a Saturday night. The food exceeded expectations, with standout dishes including a well-prepared pasta, a flavorful chicken entrée, and a perfectly cooked pork dish. The bar area is visually stunning, with beautiful ceiling ornaments adding to the ambiance. A live band provided entertainment, and while the music was excellent, the volume was overwhelming, particularly in the seating area adjacent to the bar. The excessively loud sound left my ears ringing after a prolonged stay.

More than a bridge, it is a part of Hanoi's history and our life. P/S: very old and nearly collapse 🤔, feels like it is shaking when walking on it. Pretty frighten at first honestly 😅
Pham H — Google review
The square is a favorite gathering place for locals and tourists, especially during weekends when it becomes a part of the walking street. It is a prime location for the venue of significant cultural events such as the New Year's Eve countdown. It is one of the best places to chill out in Hanoi at night.

Really cool rusty bridge but very hard to get onto by foot. A better option would be to visit the cafe just next to it for an aerial view of the bridge, as well as the rest of Hanoi.

Long Bien Bridge, a historic landmark in Hanoi, Vietnam, is a must-visit for any traveler interested in experiencing the city's rich history and vibrant culture. Built in 1898-1902 by the French, Long Bien Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Hanoi. The bridge's design, with its intricate latticework and towering steel arches, is a testament to 19th-century engineering. The bridge's unique blend of history, architecture, and daily life makes it a favorite spot for photographers.

Bun cha is super good, highly recommend for foreigners. - Food: one serving has lots of meat and may be too much for local person. However the meat is well seasoned as well as the fish source. - Price: a bit high for locals ~70k/ meal - Note: do not accept bank transfer. No air conditioner. Overall: 4/5

Good place with a lake view and a cup of coffee. Various shops available for buying coffee, souvenirs, clothes and various things. BARGAINING is the key.
Amit B — Google review
I went during lunch hour and it was extremely crowded. People don’t queue and just enter find a space and seat (mostly local). So as a foreigner, just find a space and seat. They are all sharing desk. It was warm inside and very packed so do expect you get bump or hit (no sorry and don’t get offended). Eventually I ordered the one without the sausage (₫30k) but ended they serve with the sausage (₫35k). Not because the price, but I don’t take the sausage so it will be wasted. The waitress gave me a light sauce (not fish sauce) and when I ask for it, they looks so surprised “you want?”… well, it was the specialty so I would like to try it. Mix the fish sauce with some lime and sugar to your flavour. The fish sauce have a strong smell and taste. It was also salty so make sure to add sugar to balance it. Mix everything well and dip the ingredients into the fish sauce. Dip according to your taste. Leaves balance the oily fried foods and the taste.

Coffee shop
Cafe Giảng, a historic coffee shop established in 1946 by Nguyen Giang, is renowned for its creation of the original egg coffee recipe. Located in Hanoi's Old Quarter on Nguyen Huu Huan Street, this old-school cafe offers the famous Egg Coffee at a more affordable price compared to larger establishments. The decadent beverage features a sweet topping made of whisked chicken egg yolk, Vietnamese powder, sweetened condensed milk, butter and cheese over strong coffee.
This place is easy to miss if one isn't looking properly. A quaint entrance led to the densely crowded cafe which on the inside is made of 2-3 floors. We ordered an egg coffee and a salted caramel coffee. Both the coffees were easily the best we have had in Hanoi so far. Thick, creamy, better than anything we've ever had or imagined. Would recommend to anyone in Hanoi ❤️
Poushalee D — Google review
Café Giảng offers an undeniably authentic piece of Hanoi history, as it is recognized as the original birthplace of the Egg Coffee stepping through the narrow, alleyway into the vintage, multi-level space is an essential part of the experience but its very crowded and noisy inside and not easy to find a place to sit . Regarding the actual drink, while the egg coffee is certainly nice and highly recommended for its creamy, rich texture—often compared to liquid tiramisu or meringue—you found that the taste experience was just "okay" and "not the best," despite its famous reputation. Ultimately, Giảng provides a mandatory cultural checkpoint for coffee lovers; visitors come not just for the best-tasting cup, but for the most authentic and first place to try the unique Hanoi staple. Pro (Authenticity): The original, most historic, and most authentic place for Egg Coffee. Pro (Atmosphere): Vintage, hidden alley setting offers a truly classic Hanoi experience. Con (Taste Subjectivity): The flavor profile is "okay" but may not be the "best" tasting cup compared to modern interpretations elsewhere.
Muhammad F — Google review
Tucked away in a narrow alley in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, it is easy to miss unless you’re looking for it. Inside, it’s particularly busy, with crowds stacked on small stools, tight spaces, and a constant stream of people coming in just to try the famous egg coffee. The egg coffee itself is more like a dessert than a drink. It’s thick, creamy, and sweet, with just a light hint of coffee underneath. The texture is rich, almost like melted tiramisu or custard in a cup. Overall it’s memorable, but not something you’d want every day unless you really like rich, sweet drinks. I’d say it’s trying at least once for the novelty and experience!
Abraham L — Google review
"The feeling of drinking liquid tiramisu has a 0% fishy smell." I visited Cafe Giang, the birthplace of the most famous egg coffee in Hanoi. There are countless copycat cafes, but you can immediately understand why this is the original place with just one sip. Taste & Texture There is no "fishy smell of eggs" that many people are worried about. Rather, it tastes like eating a very rich and savory custard cream or a luxurious tiramisu. The bitterness of the coffee and the sweetness of the cream create a perfect balance. As you can see in the picture, the cream is quite dense and thick. 2. Recommended menu and price (Menu & Price) Egg Coffee (Cafe Trứng - Hot): 40,000 VND. I definitely recommend the warm version. It comes out in a warm water bath and can be enjoyed gently until the very end. Egg Beer/Egg Cocoa: I recommend it if you want a different challenge, but classic is still the basic egg coffee. 3. Visit tips (Tips) Space: The entrance is narrow, but the interior is deep and spacious. It's good to feel the local atmosphere, but please note that low tables like bath chairs can be uncomfortable. How to drink: First, scoop up the cream with a spoon and taste it, then mix it with the strong coffee underneath. Conclusion: If you've come to Hanoi, it's a must-visit course, not an option. It's a taste that keeps coming to mind even after returning to Korea. I highly recommend it!

A popular spot among tourists because of its history. It’s located by the main road but tucked slightly inside a small alley, though the sign in front makes it easy to find. We ordered their famous egg coffee. Vietnam is known for its coffee, but I can honestly say that Giang Café serves the best one I had in Hanoi. The coffee doesn’t taste eggy at all — it’s creamy, sweet, smooth, and still rich in coffee flavor. I absolutely loved it! 🫶🏽 The service was friendly and fast, even with the crowd. A must-visit when you’re in Hanoi! 🤗

We visited an excellent café where we tried the famous Vietnamese egg coffee as well as their traditional Vietnamese coffee, and both were absolutely delicious. You can immediately tell the place is highly recommended—there were lots of locals and tourists enjoying their drinks. The flavors were rich and unique, and I personally loved both coffees. Despite how crowded it was, the service was impressively fast and very friendly. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and definitely a spot worth visiting if you want to taste authentic Vietnamese coffee.

Theaters
The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi offers a unique and traditional Vietnamese art form known as water puppetry. The performances showcase classic Vietnamese folklore and legends, accompanied by live traditional music played on instruments like wooden bells, drums, horns, bamboo flutes, and cymbals. Located near Hoan Kiem Lake, the theatre provides an opportunity to experience Vietnam's rich culture while enjoying a visually captivating show that is perfect for capturing memorable photos.
The show was really good! It was fun and playful but kept it's traditional ways. You can hire an audio guide for an extra 50,000. It tells you about what is going on and some history but it is not essential you can enjoy without. If you are shorter I recommend paying for a closer seat but otherwise you can see. You can go to the theatre to see the availability for tickets and times and but them ahead of time. Recommend booking ahead as some days are booked out. It is also cheaper there then going via any websites!

It's a must watch if you are in Hanoi... its a unique experience with live music n voice over by their renowned artists. You need not know the language just pick up the brochure before entering the hall and you can totally understand what is being performed. Short stories are narrated and its just 50 minutes show. So just relax and enjoy this magical show .

I love the show. I love the music too. It is a way to experience Vietnam culture. The tickets at the door are about USD$4.50. Online will cost you $13. The only convenience thing of buying online is that you can buy it ahead because in certain occasions they are sold out.
Rafael — Google review
The atmosphere is lively, the traditional music is beautiful, and the whole vibe feels very authentically Vietnamese. The musicians especially were fantastic - their energy and skill added so much to the performance. That said, the entire show is in Vietnamese, so I couldn’t understand a word of the narration or dialogue. It didn’t ruin the experience, but it did make it harder to follow the storyline in some scenes. Still, the visuals, puppetry, and cultural elements were enjoyable enough that I didn’t mind too much.
Bhuwan M — Google review
The concept of the show is truly unique and an important part of Vietnamese tradition. However, the way it is presented could be much better. There are different episodes, but they are not really connected to each other. There is no clear storyline, and overall the performance feels a bit fragmented. For tourists who don’t understand the local language, it is especially difficult to follow. The translation service, which comes at a high price, does not really solve the problem — it is very partial and often unclear. You don’t know what the songs are about, and the meaning of the performance is easily lost. Because this is such a significant cultural event, I expected more in terms of storytelling, accessibility, and translation quality. Still, it’s worth seeing once to experience a unique part of Vietnamese culture.
Rave G — Google review
Traditional Vietnamese wooden puppet show that explores different episodes depicting traditional Vietnamese rural lifestyle. Story and songs are all in Vietnamese, however you do have the choice to buy an audio guide that explains the meaning of the different episodes that you are watching. It's not a full translation of the dialogues that at times take place, however it is helpful to understand the basic storyline. It is a very unique show that is worth attending. Buying tickets in advance is recommended as shows do sell out quickly.

Water Puppet Theatre A wonderful cultural experience and a must-see while in Vietnam! The Water Puppet Theatre is unique, colourful and full of charm. The performance is beautifully done — the puppetry, live traditional music and storytelling all come together to create something really special. Even without understanding every word, the visuals and music make it easy to follow and enjoy. It’s fun, family-friendly and gives a great insight into Vietnam’s history and folklore. The show is the perfect length, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the talent of the puppeteers is incredible. A memorable experience and absolutely worth including in your trip!

Ngoc Son Temple is a serene 18th-century pagoda located on a small island in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Sword Lake. Accessible by an ornate wooden bridge, the temple is dedicated to national hero Tran Hung Dao and houses altars and ancient artifacts, including ceramics. The lake itself was once home to giant turtles, considered mythical creatures akin to the legend of Excalibur.
If you are at Hanoi. Do visit this local temple which is known for its peaceful ambience and beautiful architecture. The place reflects the Vietnamese way of worship and gives a glimpse about their spiritual life. According to the stelae at the site, Ngoc Son Temple’s construction started in autumn of 1841, under the reign of the Ly Dynasty. It worships Van Xuong De Quan (Wenchang Dijun), a Taoist deity that brings happiness and wealth to scholars. It is also dedicated to General Tran Hung Dao (1231 - 1300), who defeated the Mongols in the 13th century. 1 hour is enough to visit the place and you can buy tickets at the entrance.

We enjoyed this place from the outside, around the lake. If you have time, it’s nice to check out the temple from the inside. It’s flocking with tourists. Early hours are the best time to visit to avoid big tour groups. One has to dress appropriately to visit the temple. (Knees and shoulders covered). One of the prominent places in the Hanoi Old Quarter.

Only reason I give 4 stars is this is one of two temples dedicated Confucius and of the two this one is far more crowded with tourists, plus the other temple is nearly 800 years older. This temple was constructed in 1800s while the temple of literature (also a temple dedicated to Confucius) was first built in 1070. If you are short on time and staying in the old quarter this is still a great place to see as it is centrally located and in a beautiful lake setting however if you have more time I recommend going to the temple of literature. You can still get a good view of this temple from the lakeside trail without paying to enter, just somthing to consider! Still very beautiful and spiritual!

Right in the middle of Hoàn Kiếm Lake, surrounded by incense smoke and a peaceful atmosphere. It feels spiritual and calm, especially with the lake reflections and the red bridge leading inside. The story behind the temple and the lake is fascinating: according to legend, a magical turtle gave a sword to a hero to defend the country, and later the sword was returned to the turtle in the lake. The turtle symbolizes wisdom and longevity, which makes it such an important cultural symbol for Vietnam. Inside the temple, there are two preserved giant turtles on display. They’re incredibly rare and sacred, but there’s almost no information about them no details like their names, size, or age. It would’ve been nice to learn more, especially since there are so few of these turtles left in the world. One turtle was very well preserved clean, shiny, and clearly cared for. But the other one sadly had spider webs and dead insects around it. It made me a bit disappointed because it’s such a special part of Vietnamese history, and visitors pay to see it. I think it deserves better maintenance. Still, overall, it’s a beautiful and safe place to visit, even if you’re traveling solo. Worth seeing for the view, the history, and the cultural story just hope they’ll take better care of those legendary turtles.

Our family had the most wonderful discovery right in the middle of Hanoi: the Ngoc Son Temple. This place is truly magical, or as we say, nakakagigil (excitingly captivating)! It feels so mystical and serene as it sits right in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake. Walking across that gorgeous red bridge (Huc Bridge) to get there was an experience in itself. You immediately feel a profound sense of peace and history once you step inside. What made it extra special for our pamilya was the location. Imagine—it was only a three-minute walk from our hotel in the Old Quarter! We were so lucky to have this mystical spot right on our doorstep. Visiting Ngoc Son Temple was a quiet, spiritual moment amidst the city's hustle. It truly felt like we found a hidden gem at the very heart of Hanoi. A must-see for anyone visiting the city!

A stone tower built at the entrance to the Temple complex. It is inscribed with Chinese characters meaning "to write on the blue sky," symbolizing the importance of knowledge and education. Visitors cross the iconic red, arched wooden bridge, called The Huc Bridge (or "Morning Sunlight Bridge"), to reach the temple grounds. The bridge is a popular spot for photos. The temple houses the remains of a giant turtle that once lived in the lake. This specimen is linked to the legend of King Le Loi, who famously returned a magical sword to a divine turtle in Hoan Kiem Lake. Price for entry is a little steep, especially in comparison to many other temples in Hanoi. Chinese Confucian influence is also apparent, with multiple auspicious exhortations or calls to virtue written around gates and pillars. Note: Since it is a place of worship, visitors should dress respectfully. This includes covering knees and shoulders.

This temple is located by the Hoan Kiem Lake. It gives a peaceful vibe as it is by the lake. The popular red bridge goes towards the temple which is a beautiful spot to take pictures. The temple has a spacious campus. You can sit by the temple to have a peaceful time. There is an Entry ticket for the temple.

The turtles at Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the associated Ngọc Sơn Temple (the “temple on the lake” • There were real giant turtles living in Hoàn Kiếm Lake. The species is generally considered to be Rafetus swinhoei (Yangtze giant soft-shell turtle). • The last known Hoàn Kiếm turtle, locally called Cụ Rùa (“Great-grandfather Turtle”), died in January 2016. • After its death, that turtle was preserved (via plastination) and placed on public display inside Ngọc Sơn Temple. • There is another older preserved turtle specimen on display too — one that died in 1967 after being captured, which had been placed in a glass case in the temple. • The turtles in the temple are real — but they are preserved bodies, not live animals. They are not “replicas” in the sense of artist-made statues, but actual biological specimens preserved for display.

Hoàn Kiếm Lake in Hanoi is steeped in legend and history. It's associated with the tale of Emperor Le Loi, who returned a magical sword to a Golden Turtle God after defeating invaders. The lake is home to the ancient Great-Grandfather Turtle and features remarkable architectural landmarks like the hundred-year-old Turtle Tower, Ngoc Son temple, and the vibrant red The Huc bridge.
A very nice outdoor area especially on Sunday as it was isolated from cars. People can walk and jog around the lake and in very nice weather. So lovely to see locals interacting with their loved ones.

Located at the heart i.e old part of Hanoi near old quarters. In English it is known as lake of returned sword It’s one of the most famous tourist spot for visitors and hangout spot for locals The circumference of lake is paved for joggers. At evening lot of crowd gather at square near lake to enjoy the serene atmosphere with local music bands /individuals playing music. There are lot of vendors selling food to tourist No ticket required to visit here. There is a famous temple located at the islet in the lake reached via wooden bridge that lighted from evening. The lake is habitat to giant turtles ,few bodies of turtles are preserved and displayed in the temple. There is also a old tower at midst of lake. A must visit place in Hanoi.

Loved our morning stroll along Hoan Kiem Lake just around the old quarters. Beautiful view, fresh air, and plenty of space to walk as the paths are wider than the streets that most are used to. Came across a few runners, countless walking, and numerous couples, families, and friends opting for photography with this beautiful lake. Can't blame them! There is a bridge that requires some sort of entry fee to receive access but today we simply soaked in the experience. Locals clearly love to gather around this place too. A temple at the centre of the lake is within view. The greenery and garden surrounding the lake is so well taken care of. Saw several locals watering and caring for it during our stroll.

To have this lake in the middle of Hanoi is such a respite from the hustle bustle of the old quarters. It's breezy and calm, and seems to absorb all the frenzy within it. Love sitting by the lake on cloudy morning or breezy evenings and chewing away on my banh mi. Highly recommend to stay close the lake, preferably with lake facing views from hotels when visiting as a tourist.

Hanoi Opera House, an ornate performing arts hall, is a must-see destination in the heart of Hanoi's French Quarter. Built in 1911 with strong influences from 19th-century French architecture, it boasts ivory-toned columns, Gothic domes, and NeoClassical windows. The interior features a crystal chandelier and a T-shaped white marble staircase adorned with a red carpet.
A famous place in center of Hanoi. The Hanoi Opera House is designed on the French colonial architecture. You will enjoy it by grabbing the opportunity to visit and to watch an event. Also outside the building is used by locals an tourists as a decor for photos and also as a meeting point!

ried to visit The Operation in Hanoi after hearing some great things about it—but turns out, the only “operation” we got was a pit stop on the motorbike, staring at a closed gate! I think the place was taking its own day off for repairs, or maybe just secretly plotting the next menu surprise.Honestly, it became quite the adventure: riding through the city, parking up for our big arrival, only to be greeted by the quietest staff imaginable (aka nobody). If you want mystery, suspense, and a plot twist on your lunch break, The Operation is definitely the place… as long as you call ahead, unless you want to contemplate the meaning of “closed” with a helmet in hand. We’ll be back—it’s a mission now. Next time, fingers crossed we actually get past the front door!

Cau Giay Park is located in the city of Hanoi, Vietnam and considered to be one of the most attractive public green spaces for children. It is a well-maintained recreation area with modern construction and many amenities such as lakes, ecological areas, fitness facilities and special games for kids. The amusement zone attached to the park makes it a popular destination for families.
Just renovated with a large playground for kids. Great outdoor area for children and family.

The trails surrounding the lake are good for walking or running. It is suitable for children to play in the playground. But where the water was stagnant, the fish was dead and smelled. The visit a few days ago was under construction.

A pity we wasn't aware of the fact that the park is undergoing a major revamp so when we got there by grab, we had to turn around. Though I can't wait to see the park at its completion. I could see a lot of work going into the project. A thumbs up to the vietnamese government! But sadly we noticed dying fish in the pond. Sad to witness this all across Hanoi.

This space is very good for children. Anout the game, It includes in 3 area: one for babe( under 5 years old), one for kid ( up 5 years old) and one for adult. Besides, there are many kind of flowers in there. Look so beatiful! This park is good for who wanted to exercise too. The air is fresh.... Summary, Cau Giay park is one of good choice for F5 your week.
Hoai T — Google review
Cau Giay Park is a large green space in the district, but my recent visit was disappointing due to its current state. The Downsides: · Under Construction: The park is clearly a work in progress. You'll encounter construction materials, blocked-off areas, and the accompanying noise, which really detracts from the peacefulness you expect from a park. · Not Clean: The ongoing work likely contributes to this, but the park is not well-kept. There's litter in places, and the general feeling is a bit unkempt. · Too Much Stone, Not Enough Grass: This was the biggest letdown. The balance is off. There are extensive stone pathways and paved plazas that make it feel more like a square than a park. I found myself wishing for more soft, open grass fields to sit or play on, but they are scarce. The Positives: Its main advantage is itslarge size, offering a spacious area for people to walk around. It's a place you might go for a long, uninterrupted stroll on the paths. Verdict: As it is now,Cau Giay Park feels more like a public square than a relaxing green oasis. It might be worth a visit if you live nearby and just need a large, open space to walk through. However, I wouldn't recommend it for a relaxing picnic, a family outing where kids can run on grass, or for anyone seeking a tranquil escape from the city. Perhaps it will improve once the construction is complete.

Xôi Yến is a beloved eatery nestled in the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter, renowned for its delectable sticky rice bowls. This popular spot has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike, especially among the younger crowd. The dish features fluffy sticky rice topped with an array of savory options like buttery shaved bean curd, crunchy shallots, and various proteins ranging from fried eggs to rich pâté.
got recommended this place by my hotel and loved it!! i got the turmeric sticky rice with chicken, pate (must try!!) and marinated fried “omelette”. it came with a side of cucumbers and it was a delicious meal! a bit below 90k with iced tea which is more expensive than comparable street food stalls

This is a no frills place with plenty of locals eating in and ordering takeout. I sat down and was promptly brought a menu. I ordered the tumeric sticky rice with everything and it was so good. With the sauces its salty goodness and then you add a little sweet sauce. Also the pickled cucumbers on the side adds a nice refreshing element. Service was fast. Very good

Pass by this place, decor with Vietnam flags. It's a place where local go, so it's definitely a gem. Simple food, we ordered a mix of meat with boiled eggs, pork, minced pork, fish cake and pork floss. A place of nicely stewed pork belly. With a bowl of stick rice, all for less than 4usd. 🙂 😋

Generous portions that are great value for money — one serving can easily feed two people. The sticky rice is well-cooked and satisfying, though the green bean paste isn’t my favorite, so it wasn’t a personal highlight. Still, if you’re looking for a filling and affordable meal in Hanoi, Xôi Yến is a solid choice.

22k VND for sticky rice, 45k VND for mix meat set. Subject to 8% VAT, bringing total of 72,360 VND (2025). I paid 72k in cash. They have English Menu. I saw it is big shop, established, but still has Vietnamese tiny chair and tiny table, so I want to try. I love sticky rice. The mix comes with one fried Boiled egg (I know), a piece of Cha (meat), pork floss, a few pieces of lap-cheong (chorizo) and a sprinkle of fried onion flake. And a bowl of pickled cucumber. Yummy. So the bowl is small, so eat it patiently. The sticky rice is chewy. I heard it is not so good for digestion, so I eat it even more slowly. The food is a good combination, I wish it has more green, but it is okay. Many local visits so the quality is approved. After this meal I also ventured into other Xoi stalls, but this one is on par to my expectation.

Vegetarians — get the corn sticky rice (xoi ngo) with omelette egg (trung op let). The omelette egg comes in a tasty vinaigrette. Do not get the turmeric rice (xoi xeo) because it doesn’t have any flavour. All rice comes with mung bean paste and crispy onions on top, with a side of marinated cucumbers included. An alternative egg is the fried boiled egg (trung kho) if you prefer dry food. Medium portion size — space for a dessert at Cafe Giang after!

When in Hanoi, don't miss out on trying Nom Thit Bo Kho, a delightful dish that combines dried beef with shredded green papaya and an assortment of herbs. The beef is marinated in a flavorful mixture of salt, sugar, garlic, oil, ginger, and chili before being dried to perfection. Tossed in a light dressing made with fish sauce and lime juice and topped with roasted peanuts, this refreshing salad offers a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors.
Very interesting restaurant and experience! You will be sitting on a short stool while waiting for a staff to bring you the menu to order. The food overall is quite local and different, it is worth the try! People will not take advantage of you here so you can trust the price they give you.

I visited this restaurant with a local friend, and unfortunately, the experience fell short. The food was overly oily, which wasn’t very appealing. When my friend asked for the bill, she was quoted a certain price, but once they noticed I was with her, they added an extra 20K. It wasn’t really about the money—it was more about the unprofessional attitude behind the change. Despite the bustling location, I won’t be returning.

Decent spot for a quick bite to eat. Place gets very busy during peak hours with tourists and locals. Food was quick to come out and tasty. I tried the quail which had good flavor but can be a little tricky to eat. Recommend this place if you are looking for a quick food option where you can be apart of the street life.

Definitely a place that caters to tourists. The food is alright but nothing special. There are no prices on the menus which is always a bad sign. We ended up paying 210k for a Saigon beer & a lemon tea, the dumplings, fried chicken (there was no cheese as the name suggested) and the papaya salad.

Affordable street food. Don’t get why someone said 40,000 per dish is expensive - you don’t even know what they serve you if the dish is under 40k 🙃 Food was nice, the rolls are not good but the others (like Nom Bo and Nem Chua Ran) are delicious. We spent 200k on 2 people. The atmostphere was very marketed with people standing in the middle of the street to wave you in. One group of Hanoian sat front of us and pushed the tray it almost felt to the floor. The space was really really small because they tried to pack a lot of seats in. 2 opposite stalls on the same street but they came from the same brand and had the same menu.

Madame Hien Restaurant is a delightful culinary gem nestled in the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter, housed in a charming yellow colonial villa that exudes character and warmth. This enchanting spot, run by local French chef Didier Corlou’s wife, Mai, offers an upscale twist on traditional Vietnamese home cooking. The menu features an array of regional specialties that pay homage to Vietnam's rich culinary heritage.
The food was excellent. We opted for a lunch set, where you can choose one starter and one main dish, which made for a well-balanced meal. Since it wasn’t busy when we arrived, we had the freedom to select our preferred seating, which was a nice touch. The ambiance was pleasant, and the staff were very friendly and accommodating, ensuring a comfortable dining experience. All in all, we had a lovely and relaxing time…….

A nice setting in a what looks like a converted old home. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. There is a nice sense of history in the building which adds to a nice atmosphere while dining. The staff are friendly and attentive and helpful. The food is presented well. The restaurant is worth trying if you’re looking for contemporary Vietnamese food. When it comes down to the flavours, I still feel the street food in Hanoi is tastier. Definitely worth a visit, but it won’t blow you away. I washed it all down with some Long Island Ice Teas which were surprisingly strong. As a foreigner, the final price was actually quite decent for what you get.

We got there at 5 pm as Google said they were open but we were told the set menu dinner service starts only from 6 pm and the happy hour (buy 1 get 1 free) from 5:30 pm. We were offered a seat inside even though we got there early than said the opening hours. We had the Signature tasting set menu 900,000VND per person and boy, there was so much food! The food was fresh, chef's great skill and high quality products put in. Foie gras pho was out of this world and in fact, everything we had on the set menu was amazing. The food was good here but it’s sometimes hard where it’s traditional recipes over engineered for tourists. Having said that it’s still a beautiful venue. We had the red Tuna which we agreed with the tuna would be cooked medium rare. It came out without a touch of pink. It’s hard in a lot of Asian restaurants especially in Vietnam and Thailand to get Tuna cooked rare. Perhaps you will have more luck. The taste was still excellent. My caramelized pork had flavor but only the fatty pieces were tender. The deep fried shrimps were OK. Again a the sesame coating was plentiful but crisp and did in my opinion integrate well with the dish. I’d shell the base of the shrimp more to make it an easier dining experience. The tamarind sauce was good. Finally the chocolate pudding was good. I always do struggle where the portion sizes vs the west are so small. In a desert that costs so little to make you could double the size and keep the customer happy. Especially as the cake did not contain any explosive chocolate center. Ice cream was good. The ambience of the restaurant is good with both outdoor and indoor options. Staff were well presented and friendly. Note Google says it’s open all day. It’s not. They provide a snack menu to cover between lunch service and dinner. Should be made clear.

The main reason we went there was the Duck 3 Ways and that was delicious even though they could have portioned it differently so you‘d have the same amount of duck each way. The service was okay, not really what we expected from this sort of fancy restaurant. What we were super disappointed about was that our food has arrived at different times. This might be a thing here in Vietnam as we have had that happen a lot while visiting. The disappointing part is that this is supposed to be a high class restaurant and I think they should be able to schedule the food correctly. We have ordered one starter and two main dishes. My main dish arrived after waiting a lot of time, then the starter arrived and after waiting a long time again my boyfriends food (the duck) has arrived. By then, I have already eaten up my dish completely (and no, I am not a fast eater…) which would otherwise have been cold by the time his food arrived. We then asked if we could order dessert and the waiter told us that we would have to wait another 20-25 min for the dessert which would have been fine if we hadn‘t already waited so long for our food. An idea would be to let the guests know that dessert takes a few minutes to prepare so if they don‘t want to wait they could order dessert right away so they could get it immediately after having the starter and the main dish. We decided to skip dessert seeing as it was rather cold and windy that day and we were sitting outside as we did not make a reservation. I guess the atmosphere was bad for us because of the weather (which was ovbviously not the restaurants fault but there would have been ways to sort of „make up“ for it) and the absolut long wait. All in all it was one of the worst experiences I had in Vietnam even though it was obviously not super bad. I would not go again and would not recommend it to our friends and family.

We went for lunch. Grand parents and 9 year old were all happy with the food. We ordered the specials so we can try new dishes and even though we were not quite sure what we were eating, everything was super tasty and fresh. The staff were very nice too. There was a little cat walking around the tables. We wanted to go back in the evening and arrived around 9pm on a Saturday night. Unfortunately the kitchen was closed.

Cafe Dinh is a popular spot for egg coffee enthusiasts who prefer a more peaceful environment compared to the crowded Giang Cafe. It was established by a member of the same family behind Giang Cafe, offering its own version of the famous egg coffee with slightly different ingredient ratios. It was great experience to have an egg coffee at this place. Her father invented the egg coffee and it was great. Once you step in you will be back to an era of 80’s the place is preserved as it was and its great vibe. They only serve the coffees and drinks and no food.

It closes relatively early at 10pm, and we arrived at 9:50, expecting to be turned away but the staff still took our order with a smile, which we really appreciated. Their egg coffee has a noticeably sweeter custard layer, almost dessert-like, but the coffee underneath is much stronger. The two don’t blend as smoothly, so you get distinct layers..sweet on top, punchy coffee at the bottom. Not better or worse, just a different style. Overall, it was a pleasant visit .. friendly staff, less chaos, and a cozy spot to try Hanoi’s famous drink without the rush.

Egg coffee? This is the place you should go! I recommend this to those who wants to try or wants to find a good egg coffee. The place is a bit hard to find as it is small and you need to go inside a small area and climbed up the stairs to reach the actual cafe. The place is cozy and feel like a traditional Vietnamese home. The seat and the tables are low profile and it might not be comfortable for some. They serve also other types of coffee if you like but I highly suggest to order their egg coffee.

this year when i came back they opened the ground floor area. but i'm still more familiar with the first floor, not much has changed on this floor. the egg coffee is still fatty and the coffee is delicious. cozy space and lots of old photos of hanoi.

They serve a unique Egg Coffee, that taste like cream mixed with coffee. Always busy and need to queue sometimes. Located in Hoan Kiem area.

Historic Sites
Hoa Lo Prison, often referred to as the Hanoi Hilton, stands as a poignant reminder of Vietnam's tumultuous past. This historic site primarily served as a detention center for American POWs during the Vietnam War, including notable figures like Senator John McCain. Today, only the gatehouse remains and has been transformed into a museum that offers insights into its storied history.
I visited Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi and paid 50,000 VND for the entrance. I didn’t get the audio guide since many of the exhibits already have clear explanations in English. It was very interesting to see and learn about the history of the prison and what life was like for both Vietnamese and American prisoners. The displays are well organized and give a deep look into an important part of Vietnam’s past. Definitely worth visiting if you enjoy history.
Lydia C — Google review
Stepping into Hoa Lo Prison was like walking back in time. The dark cells, heavy doors, and detailed exhibits created a somber atmosphere that really conveyed the weight of its history. The information throughout was clear and engaging, making the stories of the past feel vivid and real. It wasn’t crowded during my visit, so I could wander quietly and reflect, spending about an hour inside. The entry fee was very reasonable for such a powerful experience. With half the site outdoors and little air conditioning inside, the heat added to the intensity of the visit. A haunting yet unforgettable stop in Hanoi.
Suhen R — Google review
Nice place. You will get to see the history of the prison, the way they showcasing the history with the realistic statues will make you feel standing there back then. Well preserved and details written everywhere. Even without the audio guide also you will understand everything.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hỏa Lò Prison A powerful and emotional place to visit. Hỏa Lò Prison offers an eye-opening look into Vietnam’s history, with detailed exhibits, original structures and deeply moving stories from both the French colonial era and the Vietnam War period. The museum is very well presented, with clear explanations, artifacts, photos and personal accounts that help you understand what prisoners went through. It’s not an easy visit — some sections are confronting — but it’s incredibly important. The atmosphere is respectful and reflective, and it gives visitors a much deeper appreciation of the resilience and struggles of those who were held here. Allow at least an hour to take it all in properly. A meaningful and memorable part of any trip to Hanoi, and a must-see for anyone wanting to understand the country’s past.
Nicole S — Google review
Hoa Lo Prison turned out to be one of the most striking places I visited in Hanoi. The moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt heavy — the small rooms, stark displays, and preserved details offer a raw look into the lives of those who were once held there. The museum presents its history in a clear and compelling way, making it easy to understand the events that took place without feeling overwhelmed. I happened to go at a quiet time, which made it easier to explore slowly and absorb everything; about an hour was enough for a thorough visit. The ticket price is quite low considering how meaningful the experience is. Be prepared for warm temperatures, as part of the site is outdoors and the indoor areas aren’t well-cooled. Overall, it’s a powerful and unforgettable landmark that leaves you thinking long after you leave.

HOA LO (HANOI HILTON) prison will be of great interest for anyone who has taken the time to research Vietnam's history, and it's struggles with transient foreign powers. The setting underlines the incredible will power of the Vietnamese people to endure inhuman treatment at the hands of external aggressor's. In recent years the prison was synonymous for detaining American pilots, downed during 'missions'. The facility is well visited by the local citizens and tourists alike. There are audible guides freely available which allow you to comfortably solo guide through the setting. The venue is well maintained, very informative and th staff are helpful. What more can you ask for.

Famous as "The Hanoi Hilton", this is probably the main draw. The information boards are excellent and informative and were the best aspect for me. However, there were considerable crowds when we visited (November 25) which made it somewhat challenging to navigate. The publicly accessible parts are not that extensive. Overall I guess it's worth a look if you want to connect with a significant slice of history.
Philip B — Google review
It's okay............... It's history. Things happened here. Things have been happening in these walls for a long time, as a foreigner and a visitor to this country It is definitely skewed towards propaganda and what occurred before 1965....... There is very little and I mean very very little regarding what you think you might find there. There's a big focus on It being a French prison for the Vietnamese, but again it is history. This history.. it is there... It's just not what one would think it is

Specialty Museums
The Vietnamese Women's Museum in Hanoi is a unique and captivating destination that celebrates the diverse roles and contributions of women in Vietnamese society. Through colorful traditional costumes, photographs, and various artifacts, the museum offers insights into the history, family life, fashion, and wartime experiences of Vietnamese women. It also delves into topics such as engagement rituals, child education, and the heroic mothers of Vietnam. The museum's mission extends beyond preservation to fostering global dialogue on gender equality, development, and peace.
Hands down one of the best museums I've been to. There are three floors of educational content that really take you through the expectations, roles, and experiences of women in Vietnamese culture and history, and you will feel moved by many of the displays. The second floor, which was about women's role in war, was especially informative and interesting. I also highly recommend getting the audio-guided tour if you want the full experience - it's only 40k dong and they have it in Vietnamese, English, Chinese, Korean, and French. The whole guided audio tour will take about an hour and a half and will tell you about all of the displays you see. I know they also have an option of a human guide, but I think the audio guide was very, very detailed. I'd do it again if I were back in Hanoi. Must-see to really get a feel of the history of Vietnam, learn how women contribute to the people's victory during the Vietnam war, and of course also learn about family life and childbirth in the country.

We arrived at opening time. You work your way through three floors of displays broken up into subjects and themes. Very well laid out with signs explaining everything. I did come across one section where the door was closed and the room was dark, but looking through the glass of the door it looked like something was inside. I opened the door and the lights came on. It was a whole area that I would have missed if I hadn't tried the door. Everything in the museum was interesting but my favorites were the clothing. Unique, colorful, and beautiful. If you are looking for something relaxing, or need to get out of the heat or rain, and would like to learn something at the same time, this is a good place to visit.

Outstanding museum dedicated to women's contribution to the life, society, culture, economy and war effort in Vietnam. Properly structured across 3 floors, it is a lovely display of objects interspersed with detailed captions and explainer write-ups. The audio-guide is a must because it is very well curated in alignment with he exhibits and has more context to offer than what you just see in front of you. It is difficult to point out a favorite gallery because each one is better than the other - though the war effort gallery was quite an emotional journey to go through. All objects and writings curated beautifully.

The objects gives idea about the life of Vietnamese women around different geographical part and time period including clothes ,utensils ,agricultural equipments used by them. One section explains the different cultural tradition related to major events in the life of women. Another section displays their contribution during time of prolonged war. The objects are well explains by means of a detailed and easily readable description in English as well for foreign tourist This place is tickted The objects are well preserved and premises is well maintained. You can also buy souvenirs at ground floor You can also buy cold drinks water and some snacks near ticket counter 1 HR is at least needed to enjoy this place

One of the fascinating place to get an idea about the traditional dresses of Vietnam People. Though of long back styles, these fits well to modern ethnic wear. The bridal sections are colourful & awesome. One has to spend at least 2 hours for a leisure go around. A well curated - not to miss museum

Such a unique and educational experience with tons of engaging knowledge and forms of media! My major criticism about this place is I would’ve loved to have one of these posters or artwork pieces as a postcard to take home. Instead, the gift shop was full of AI art that discouraged me from buying much from there. I think changing that inventory would make it a top tier museum

Hanoi Old Quarter

4.6
(8673)
Historical landmark
Hanoi Old Quarter is a historic trading district with narrow lanes, a night market, and traditional tube houses. The Hanoi Old Quarter Cultural Centre offers interactive displays and exhibitions showcasing the city's evolution from a small trading port in 1010AD. Nearby Hoan Kiem Lake provides a peaceful escape with Ngoc Son Temple on its northern edge. Residents practice tai chi by the lake in the mornings, and on weekends, there's a funfair vibe due to traffic bans.
We stayed in the Hanoi Old Quarter and it was nothing short of amazing! We experienced the people, culture and atmosphere of the Old Quarter. Walking through the busy streets was both exhilarating and quite the adventure navigating people, cars and motorcycles. It was a rush! The people are friendly, kind and welcoming and some became like family. I HIGHLY recommend staying at a hotel in the Old Quarter and experiencing it for yourself.
Jon H — Google review
Hanoi Old Quarter is a lively and fascinating part of the city filled with history, culture, and endless energy. The narrow streets are packed with shops, cafes, and street food vendors, making it a great place to explore on foot. It can get crowded and noisy, but that’s part of its charm. The mix of old architecture and modern life gives it a unique atmosphere that really captures the spirit of Hanoi.
Lydia C — Google review
Grounding experience to visit the old quarters and get a peak into a blend of the old and new in Hanoi. Vibrant streets, bustling with mopeds, and people going about their work. Flocks of people enjoying a meal and beer together. Lots of small plastic stools signature of the area. Just a pleasure to walk through these lanes and discover every nook and corner. You see what you seek!
Shreya K — Google review
Hanoi Old Quarter is a must visit, or even better, a must stay if you’re traveling to Hanoi for the first time. Its narrow, bustling streets filled with cafés, hotels, souvenir shops, and all kinds of local stores will amaze you and make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world. The Old Quarter is still home to many locals, so you’ll see people going about their daily routines alongside curious travelers. At night, the area becomes even livelier, busier, and full of energy; an experience you definitely shouldn’t miss.
Duran N — Google review
Hanoi's Old Quarter is not merely a place; it's a full-blown sensory experience. From the moment you step into its labyrinthine network of streets, you are plunged into a whirlwind of activity that feels both ancient and ceaselessly modern. It is, without a doubt, the historical and cultural heart of the city, and an experience no visitor should miss. Historically, the Old Quarter was a bustling centre of commerce, famously composed of 36 streets, each dedicated to a specific craft or trade—Hang Bac for silver, Hang Gai for silk, Hang Quat for fans, and so on. While the specialisations have blurred over time, this centuries-old layout remains, creating a fascinating maze to explore. The architecture itself is a story, with narrow, deep "tube houses" squeezed together, their façades a captivating mix of traditional Vietnamese design and fading French colonial elegance. The true pulse of the Old Quarter, however, is its street life. This is where Hanoi truly lives and breathes. The pavements are a non-stop parade of commerce and daily life. Motorbikes, laden with everything from passengers to precarious towers of goods, weave through pedestrians with an instinctual grace that is both terrifying and mesmerising to the uninitiated. Food is, perhaps, the district's crowning glory. The Old Quarter is a street food paradise. Forget fine dining; the best meals are served from bubbling pots on the pavement, enjoyed on diminutive plastic stools. A steaming bowl of phở for breakfast, the smoky, sizzling delight of bún chả for lunch, a crusty bánh mì on the go, and, of course, the decadently rich cà phê trứng (egg coffee) in a hidden-away café. Every corner offers a new aroma, a new flavour to discover. By day, the streets are a blur of shoppers haggling in dong-packed markets and tourists navigating the wonderful chaos. By night, the area transforms. The famous Ta Hien, or "Beer Street," becomes a throng of locals and travellers alike, spilling out from bars onto the road, sharing cheap, refreshing bia hơi (draught beer) and plates of fried snacks. Nearby, the serene Hoan Kiem Lake offers a beautiful, illuminated contrast, with the iconic red Huc Bridge leading to the Ngoc Son Temple—a perfect spot for a quiet evening stroll. A word of warning: the Old Quarter is not for the faint of heart. It is noisy, it is crowded, and the constant flow of traffic can be overwhelming. Crossing the road is an art form in itself (the trick is to walk slowly and confidently, allowing the traffic to flow around you). But this chaos is precisely where its charm lies. The Old Quarter is not a sanitised museum piece; it is a living, breathing, brilliantly hectic neighbourhood. It’s a place where you can find exquisite silk, sip world-class coffee, and eat one of the best meals of your life, all within a few square metres. For the traveller seeking authenticity, energy, and a true taste of Hanoi, the Old Quarter is, quite simply, essential.
Grant R — Google review
Hanoi Old Quarter is vibrant, chaotic, and full of charm. Narrow streets, endless cafés, local shops, street food stalls, and buzzing energy at every corner. It’s the best place to feel the real pulse of Hanoi — lively, colorful, and unforgettable. A must-visit area if you want the full cultural experience.

Lots ok walking, very traditional and old fashion. Street food abundance. Gold shops, pawn shops and a small market alley look and feel the culture.

St. Joseph Cathedral, also known as Nha Tho Lon or The Big Church, is a Roman Catholic neo-gothic style cathedral situated in the heart of Hanoi near Hoan Kiem Lake. Constructed around 120 years ago, it is the oldest church hosting religious activities for Hanois parishioners. Its design bears resemblance to the architecture of Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral. Just steps away from this iconic landmark lies T.U.N.
St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Hanoi Beautiful Gothic-style cathedral located right in the heart of Hanoi. The interior is stunning, with colorful stained-glass windows and an impressive altar, creating a solemn yet captivating atmosphere. The area around the cathedral is lively, especially in the evenings. There are many street cafés, tea shops, and snack stalls where you can sit, enjoy a drink, and watch the bustling surroundings. Perfect for sightseeing, taking photos, and soaking in the local vibe. ⭐ Rating: 4.5/5 👍 Pros: Iconic architecture, great photo spots, plenty of nearby food and drink options. 👎 Cons: Often crowded with tourists, can be noisy outside during peak hours.

Constructed between 1884 and 1886, its design resembles Notre Dame de Paris, and it serves as a significant historical and spiritual landmark. Its an old Roman Catholic church located in the city's Old Quarter in Hanoi. The church is known for its striking architecture, intricate stained glass, featuring tall spires and a weathered exterior that adds to its timeless charm. It was very close to our hotel so we made several trips here . It is mostly crowded around this area. There are cozy cafes surrounding it n a school too.

Very beautiful church/cathedral They have mass furing Friday and Saturday. We were not allowed to enter druing the Sat 6pm mass for some reason. Not sure why, i cannot understand what the lady was saying. So we just prayed outside. Will definitely love to visit and enter next time. Many people around since these is located near the old quarters where there are lots of cafes. Traffic is crazy so i think walking while going around is the best.

The Cathedral had a really good architecture. Outside is full busy with everyone trying to take pictures. I was disappointed it was not open and not sure why it was closed. 100% worth a visit! This beautiful cathedral is built in a classic European Gothic style, with impressive architecture both inside and out. Entry is free, which makes it an easy stop while exploring the city. If you aren’t dressed appropriately, there are thin cover-ups available at the entrance. Thong Nhat Park, situated in the heart of Hanoi, is a sprawling green oasis known as the "green lung" of the city. Spanning 50 hectares and bordered by four main streets, it features the serene Bay Mau Lake at its center. The park offers a tranquil atmosphere for relaxation and various recreational activities such as outdoor education, group gatherings, and fairs.
Amazing to stumble across this big public park. Found many locals playing sports, jogging, and walking their dogs. Interestingly, this looks and feels very much like Singapore in the 1980s. A very nice place to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Thong Nhat Park (also known as Reunification Park) is one of the largest and most iconic green spaces in Hanoi. Located in the heart of the city, near major roads like Le Duan and Dai Co Viet, it serves as a refreshing escape for both locals and tourists. What makes Thong Nhat Park special is its blend of natural beauty and cultural significance. The park features a large lake named Bay Mau, where visitors can rent paddle boats or enjoy peaceful walks along the shaded paths. There are also wide lawns, tree-lined avenues, and flower gardens that make it a perfect place for picnics, jogging, or simply relaxing. Families often bring their children here to enjoy the playgrounds or take part in community events. In the early morning and evening, the park becomes lively with locals practicing tai chi, dancing, or exercising. Although some areas of the park could benefit from better maintenance and more modern facilities, the overall atmosphere is serene and welcoming. Recent efforts to renovate certain parts have made it even more attractive and accessible.

A nice flat park to walk or exercise in. On Saturday there seems to be Karaoke at the lakeside cafes. Other reviewers said that you pay to enter but you don't. The payment is for parking motorcycles. Lots of cafes, popup clothing shops, a children's railway. Motorised children's play vehicles just outside the park. Some momentary relief from the constant traffic and beeping.

Cái Mâm Bistro - Vietnamese Cuisine & Vegetarian

Cái Mâm Restaurant in Hanoi offers a unique dining experience with its authentic and traditional Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant stands out for its diverse buffet menu featuring frog hot pot, beef dishes, and a wide array of vegetarian options without eggs or milk. Visitors can enjoy the heavenly vegetarian buffet at an affordable price, allowing them to savor over 10 dishes and desserts made with fresh ingredients.
For me, this restaurant deserves five stars for its food alone. It was our best culinary experience in Hanoi and was kindly recommended to us by Hotel Lagom. The food was truly delicious — I especially recommend the fried noodles with seafood and the vegetables with garlic. The service staff seemed a bit nervous, and the overall service felt slightly chaotic. The atmosphere was pleasant, with a simple, low-key interior design.

I visited Cái Mâm Bistro – Vietnamese Cuisine & Vegetarian and was truly impressed. The food was excellent, with authentic, well-balanced flavors that really highlight the essence of Vietnamese cuisine. Every dish was carefully prepared, and the quality of the ingredients was evident. The service was outstanding from Nga—attentive, friendly, and always ready to offer recommendations based on your preferences. The whole experience felt warm and thoughtfully delivered. Since the place is quite popular, making a reservation is highly recommended to ensure you get a table and can enjoy the meal without any rush. Overall, it’s a restaurant that is absolutely worth visiting, and one I will definitely return to.

This was recommended to me by the tour guide on my Hanoi food tour and it was wonderful! They have a large selection on the menu (with photos). The server was kind and helpful, and I enjoyed the setting, one story above street level.

A cold and wet evening and we felt like chicken soup so we ordered the shredded chicken with corn. Perhaps that was the problem - ordering a not very Vietnamese dish to start with! It came out almost cold and with the consistency of glue - basically inedible. A comment to the wait staff was met with a blank stare. The temperature issues did not end there. The beer was warm (we were offered a glass with ice to go with it) and the red wine was frigid. The evening was saved by a pretty basic but tasty fried noodles with vegetables, but at a total of $40 Australian it was disappointing overall.

Delicious food, I had the braised pork and shrimp, pickled cabbage and an iced tea. It's obviously on the pricier side being in Old Quarter and all patrons were tourists hahahah but I cleared the plate and wished I had some more that's how good it was. The interior looks like someone's old house with multiple floors, some 5-6 tables in each floor. Cute! And just a heads up, they do ask you to leave a review when you ask for the bill and they wanna take a pic of it once you posted it. It does feel a bit pressured especially for thise who don't like lies but are people pleasers lol

We were really excited to visit this place since it was mentioned in the Michelin Guide, but to be honest, we left a bit disappointed. The portions were quite small, and the flavors didn’t stand out compared to a regular Vietnamese restaurant that would cost a third of the price. The presentation was nice, but overall, it didn’t live up to the hype. I wouldn’t really recommend it.

This is a good place for a Vietnamese set meal for around 20 bucks that is definitely worth the price if you want to be in aircon and in a elegant yet simple environment. The service is a bit lazy but the dishes are spot on with delicious spring rolls, a fragrant Pho, a nicely cooked catfish or BBQ pork skewers and a fabulous cinnamon ice cream.

Had Bun Cha and fresh spring rolls, both are really good and exceed my expectations. From outside the restaurant doesn’t look like a typical Michelin gourmet / Michelin guide restaurant, but the internal and the food are superb.
Jaylene L — Google review
No chicken pho available at the time of my visit so I tried the vegetarian pho. Definitely very unique presentation and taste (sweet x savoury) and a taste you cannot find anywhere else. Spring rolls were very fresh and one of the best I’ve eaten

Namaste Hanoi is a top-rated Indian restaurant located in the heart of Hanoi Old Quarter. The restaurant boasts an elegant decor that reflects the rich cultural aspects of India, creating a cozy and inviting dining atmosphere for families and couples. With over 3000 reviews on Tripadvisor, Namaste Hanoi is known for its superior service and diverse menu featuring authentic Indian dishes from various regions such as Hyderabad and Gujarat.
I didn’t think we would find a good Indian Restaurant in Hanoi. It turns out to be one of my best Indian dining experience. The service was great and the food was superb. Very authentic taste but my favourite was their Butter Chicken and their Garlic Naan. They deserve a 5 star rating.

We had been to Namaste Hanoi for our dinner. The food was delicious, authentic, and halal, which is a great plus for those looking for halal Indian cuisine in the city. The ambiance was elegant, and the service was attentive. Prices are on the higher side, but the quality makes up for it. A good spot for a nice Indian meal in Hanoi.

A good and spacious restaurant with prompt service and relishing food. Namaste Hanoi is located in a convenient location near major attractions. The food here is very good especially North Indian food. The restaurant is closed during afternoon hours. So please check the timings before visiting. Try their dal makhani and onion bhajjis. They are must try.

As a travel agency owner, I arranged dinner from this hotel for our group of guests, and the overall experience was excellent. The food quality was impressive—fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. Our guests thoroughly enjoyed the meal. It’s definitely one of the better Indian restaurants in the city, offering both good service and authentic taste. Recommended for anyone looking for quality Indian cuisine while in town.

Was pleasantly surprised to have authentic Indian food in Vietnam. Owned by an Indian, the food has typical Indian flavors. The level of spices could be adjusted according to taste but we ordered full spicy food and it was delicious. They also accommodated our request for garlic free food. Baigan bharta was very good.

Had dinner here as this place was near to our stay. It was a spacial Indian restaurant with good ambience. We tried tomato coriander soup, mix veg bajji, dal khichdi and pav bhaji. Taste was good and so was the service.

I had dinner with two main dishes both were excellent 👌 The service was exceptional and I can't wait to visit again. Indian food done right ✅

We were excited to try Nameste Hanoi, expecting a good Indian meal, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a big letdown. The Dal Palak had absolutely no flavor, the Boiled Potato Chilli was more of a joke than a dish, and the Biryani was just plain rice with zero salt or aroma. To make matters worse, we found a metal piece from a cleaning sponge in the biryani – totally unacceptable. Even the Paneer Sabji lacked taste and freshness. Overall, every dish was bland and far from what you’d expect from a restaurant claiming to serve “authentic Indian cuisine.” Looking at the high ratings, we suspect a lot of fake reviews. For us, it was a truly disappointing experience – we wouldn’t recommend it.

Located in the heart of Hanoi near St. Josephs Cathedral and Hoan Kiem lake, T.U.N.G Dining has been a prominent player in Vietnam's culinary scene since its opening in December 2018. The restaurant's name, which stands for Twisted, Unique, Natural and Gastronomique, reflects its commitment to offering an exceptional dining experience with locally sourced ingredients and innovative 18-course seasonal dinners. Absolutely loved my experience here. It’s great to see a Vietnamese chef elevate the unique flavors of Vietnam. The dishes were thoughtful and creative. Also, as someone who doesn’t drink alcohol, I’m glad they had a juice pairing option with some pretty unique flavors! Service was absolutely wonderful. Everyone was super friendly and took their time to explain the dishes. The cards they provided explaining the dish and the origins of the ingredients were a nice touch. If I’m ever in Hanoi again I will definitely come back and see what new creations chef Tung has come up with.

That was a phenomenal and memorable experience. The food was outstanding and was presented in an astonishingly creative way. Each of the dishes secured an intense burst of flavour and every time brought a mystery with it. The staff was not only polite but also knowledgeable, able to present the dishes both in Vietnamese and English which helped me familiarise with the origin of each of the dishes. The restaurant was quiet, clean and beautifully decorated with a welcoming atmosphere. I genuinely recommend this restaurant and it's undeniably one of the best experiences I've had in Hanoi.

What an adventure for our palate! Each dish is unique yet oddly familiar, like I can’t do justice to them with just words 😅 We also enjoyed learning stories from the cue cards that came with each course. Overall a memorable experience for our birthday celebration & would love to come back one day. Big thanks to the very attentive, friendly & knowledgeable crew 🧡 You guys deserve all the credits!

An exquisite fine dining experience - we were greeted with warm hospitality from the whole team the moment we walked in. The interior is in a Nordic/Scandinavian modern style which is simple but classy. We love that each dish comes with a little card that introduces the dish. Each dish is meticulously designed with precision from its flavours to presentation, entwining Vietnamese indigenous ingredients. Truly a gastronomical journey and experience.

What an amazing experience. We were running so late and they were extremely accommodating. When we got there, we were able to meet the chef and watch the sous chefs prepared the dishes. The entire experience was so memorable. The meal was an absolute love letter to Vietnam. I highly recommend the wine pairing. After we were done, we were able to chat some more with the owner. I expressed how much I loved the cinnamon and he had a GENEROUS amount delivered to our hotel the next day to take home. I’ve never had such an amazing experience.

Absolutely mind-blowing evening at T.U.N.G Dining in Hanoi. 18-course tasting menu is a symphony of innovation, twisted, unique, natural, and utterly gastronomic. Surprised to Vietnamese twists on global flavors. Impeccable taste, intimate ambiance, and an unforgettable friendly staffs that elevated it all. This was pure culinary magic—worth every moment and penny. Extraordinary.

Dining at T.U.N.G. was an amazing experience. It put a ray of sunshine on our otherwise very wet and rainy holiday in Hanoi. The food was savoury and beautifully presented. I especially loved how chef Tung brought the flavours to his food and elevated it to another level. My husband and I left with full bellies and an unforgettable memories that will be replayed in our dreams tonight and nights to come. Thanks to all the team at T.U.N.G. for a wonderful evening.

I came back here for my birthday dinner and tried the new menu, The Treasure Gallery of Vietnam’s Flavors. It felt wonderful to see how Chef Tùng and the team growing this journey. The food has become even more focused and more confident, yet still playful in a very Vietnamese way. The evening began with a gentle shiso tea scented with Hoà Bình ginger and guava, then warm sourdough with chẩm chéo and Lý Sơn black garlic. A simple start that set the rhythm nicely. The toothfish reminded me why it is one of the signatures here. Buttery as ever, paired with Bắc Giang yardlong beans, clam and a soft curry that tied everything together. The menu moved smoothly from the bright lobster with pineapple and fermented tomato to the clever reimagination of phở. The broth carried the depth of sá sùng in true Northern style, and the whole dish felt both familiar and lifted. The carabineros course was a clear highlight. The umami from Cát Hải fish sauce, chili, onion and kombu wrapped around the sweetness of the prawn. The extra crunch from the carabineros cracker made the flavor pop even more. The veal with Mộc Châu strawberry and rice paddy herb was clean and refreshing, while the little Gia Lai pork bun beside the foie gras bún bò chawanmushi brought a fun touch that still tasted luxurious. Before the satsuma gyu A5+, the team brought out a hand forged knife. It added a small moment of personality that made the course feel special without being theatrical. The beef was excellent, and the cao lầu side won by a mile for me. Desserts were balanced and thoughtfully paced. The Đà Lạt sweet potato with Kristal caviar felt like the signature it is, followed by a bright tofu, lychee and soursop combination. The Đồng Nai chocolate with kumquat was smooth and warm, and the final taste of Bình Thuận red dragon fruit and starfruit ended the meal on a lovely note. Overall, the menu shows real intention and a deeper love for Vietnamese flavors. Service was warm, timing was smooth and the entire experience felt celebratory from start to finish. A beautiful birthday dinner and a very strong chapter for Tùng.

Zoo
Park
Thu Le Zoo, also known as Thu Le Park, is a popular urban zoo located in Hanoi. It is situated in Thu Le village, an ancient village with historical significance dating back to the Ly Dynasty. The park features a large lake and offers amusement rides, boating, and walking paths for visitors to enjoy. Established in 1977 and covering about 20 hectares of land, it houses nearly 600 animals from 95 different species.
Good place to visit with children. Crowded in the morning. Looks relatively empty around lunch time. Hanoi zoo reminds me of the zoos I visited in my childhood.
Evgeny A — Google review
This city park appears to be more of an amusement park than a serious zoo with conservation and the welfare of the animals as the main priority. To be honest, I missed most of the animals and just concentrated on the island in the centre of the boating lake. Some visitors were feeding the monkeys through the wire netting. It's clearly a big favourite with young families at the weekend, and although some people were teasing the animals, most were generally respectful, and the children were just curious. Pricing for children is by height (!), great if your kids are late developers. I was charged 50,000VND as a foreign tourist.
Sarah A — Google review
The animals in the park seem quite suppressed, pacing around in confined spaces. There is very little shade throughout the park, so it’s recommended to bring your own water and sun protection. There are small vendors throughout the park selling snacks, drinks, and paid amusement rides—whether or not to spend on them depends on your personal preference.
胖胖豬 — Google review
The park does seem to be more of an amusement park then a zoo. The animals seem to come second to the rides, prizes and stalls. The bear especially was overheated and seemed confused. If the park was maintained better and focused of conservation it would be a lot better.
Haviland — Google review
The worst zoo I have ever seen. Cages are too small and dirty. Rats are everywhere. Animals were clearly distressed, many were shaking their heads and pacing anxiously. Not one looked animated and comfortable. There was no stimulus in any of the cages e.g no climbing facilities for monkeys. I felt close to tears.
Ursula B — Google review
Terrible… it is no zoo but kids park with lots of rides. Those few animals there jas limited and not nice place, except the elephant, they seemed to have space for some dignity. So kids park yes, not a zoo. If you can choose, go to zoo in Saigon.
Kalkared — Google review
Even during the weekend, few people visit the zoo. My experience was terrible — it was too hot and there was limited shade.
Sai Z — Google review
I am not sure how to describe my experience in Ha Noi Zoo. First I would like to note that I am a big lover of animals and I have visited many Zoo and Aquarium all around the world. The best ones being in Bali, where animals are alll free and they are living like in private resort. So with the things I saw in my travels, it is very hard to give review for Ha Noi Zoo. The price is very cheap, only 50,000 VDN per person. The stuff is very nice, kind and they welcomed me and my boyfriend very warmly. There is a lot of activities for small kids, which is amazing for families that come with children! The only thing I am sad about is the animals. They look sad, depressed, like they already said "Goodbye" to their freedom. They are locked up in small cages that are not suitable for them. They have no place to move, explore and personally I don't think they adapted their living space to what they should have in nature. Some of the animals are missing fur and feathers. To me, it was very sad to visit this Zoo. To resume, the stuff is very nice and polite, there is a lot of rides and fun things for children to do, but the animals look like they are suffering. At least, in my personal opinion.

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is a captivating destination that offers a deep dive into the diverse cultures of Vietnam. It serves as a microcosm, showcasing the rich history and unique traditions of 54 ethnic groups through carefully curated indoor exhibits featuring clothing, jewelry, weapons, musical instruments, and religious artifacts. The outdoor exhibition area is equally fascinating, with authentic buildings from different ethnic groups displaying their daily necessities.
Enjoyed the museum! The inside can be a little repetitive but the outside is beautiful and very beautifully done. It felt very interactive since you’re able to walk in the houses and explore. The tickets are 40k per person. Well worth it. We went on a Tuesday afternoon and it was very quiet.

Wow this place caught me off guard. Learned so much about ancient building techniques. It's a living history type outdoor space, where full scale village homes are displayed. You can walk into these homes and gain great insight into how different indigenous people built their homes and conducted home life. If low on time, skip the initial craft exhibit area and go straight out back to the homes. Must visit!

The Ho Chi Minh Museum, shaped like a lotus flower, is dedicated to the life and legacy of President Ho Chi Minh. The museum features a collection of memorabilia and exhibits that detail not only the revolutionary leader's timeline but also Vietnam's history. With its Soviet-style facade and five floors of documents, photos, and installations, the museum offers a surreal yet intriguing portrayal of Vietnamese history.
Entrance is free for locals and 40,000 VND for foreigners. The museum is modern, spacious, and offers a well-curated look into Ho Chi Minh’s life and legacy. Exhibits are easy to follow, and the building itself is impressive. Worth a visit if you’re already in the area.

Not telling only Ho Chi Minh live but interestingly described the liberal of Vietnam from France, Japan and finally get freedom. Highly recommend if you're nerd but you might need the chatGPT to describe more because the explained in English in museum is insufficient.
Kasemsan P — Google review
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Museum, Stilt House, and One Pillar Pagoda are all in one compound. If you're planning to visit one or more of these, try to factor in the other ones, since they're all there anyway. Our original destination for the trip was the Mausoleum, but it was literally reunification day when we went, so people had been lined up since the night before to pay their respects to Uncle Ho. We had a flight to catch later in the day so could not even try to line up, and we went to the museum instead. The museum has three floors: the first one, which is the lobby, gift shop, and snack area; the second one, which is used for more current exhibits; and the third one, which is a mix of Ho Chi Minh's life and about anti-fascist, anti-imperialist movements in Vietnam and around the world. There is even a section on guernica in there. My comment is, some of the stuff you learn in here are things you can learn from visiting other museums as well. It was great to see some of HCM's personal artifacts, but we didn't learn anything more than we did from other museums. I think the mausoleum is really the main attraction here as well as the Stilt House.
Hazel G — Google review
Good experience to learn about Ho Chi Minh & the Indochina war. Unfortunately, most of the exhibition did not have English explanations (only the top floor had sufficient translations). The artworks are beautiful & meaningful. Free for locals & 40k for foreigns.
Maddy W — Google review
The Ho Chi Minh Museum is a fascinating and well-designed place to learn about Vietnam’s history and the life of President Ho Chi Minh. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, combining artifacts, photographs, and creative displays that give insight into his journey, ideals, and the country’s struggle for independence. The museum building itself is impressive, with unique architecture and spacious halls. Some sections are presented in a more artistic, symbolic style, which makes the experience feel different from a typical museum visit. Even if you’re not very familiar with Vietnam’s history, the exhibits are accessible and engaging. The surrounding area is peaceful and beautifully maintained, especially since it’s right next to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and other important landmarks. It’s easy to spend an hour or two exploring and taking in the atmosphere. Overall, a meaningful and educational stop in Hanoi — great for anyone interested in history, culture, or understanding more about Vietnam’s national story.
Alib — Google review
Great place, I learned a lot about Ho Chi Minh. I was deeply impressed with his modesty, leadership and life story. I don’t understand why there is “siesta”, all is closed from 11:30 to 14:30, but I would say the place is for the day visit for sure.
Alex P — Google review
We got super lucky and there was free tours being given in English by local students learning English, took us around an hour to go around and learn from the guides. Would recommend - helpful to know, the museum closes at 12. Best to head over in the mornings.
Kirsty D — Google review
Entrance is 40k but if you are a woman and a foreigner I recommend you cover your knees because I had to pay 140k to enter with this long skirt, which I understand totally! But what a surprise, once inside I saw so many knees everywhere : 80% being men in shorts but also Vietnamese women with dresses that were shorter than mine and didn’t need to cover themselves… so I guess you only have to pay respect by covering your knees if you are a woman and if they assume that you can pay more than 3 times the price.. Unfair :/ Also I recommend to go with a guide because a lot of stuff are written in Vietnamese only

One Pillar Pagoda, a reconstructed Buddhist temple dating back to 1049, is a must-see in Hanoi. The pagoda's unique design resembles a lotus blossom and is located near the preserved body of Ho Chi Minh at Ba Dinh Square. Visitors can also explore the Museum of Ethnology to learn about Vietnam's diverse ethnic groups.
The One Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi, Vietnam, is one of the country’s most iconic and unique Buddhist temples. Built in 1049 during the reign of Emperor Lý Thái Tông, it was designed to resemble a lotus blossom, symbolizing purity and enlightenment. The entire structure stands on a single stone pillar, rising from a serene lotus pond — giving it its name. It’s a great place to visit, especially since there are a few other attractions nearby. So, it’s always a good idea to combine a visit to this place with a walk around. NOTE:- As always, my reviews are based solely on my personal experience and are completely honest. I’m not influenced in any way, and I understand that others may have different experiences.

I’m not some history/architecture/religious geek but I think it’s a nice building and so is the area around it. The building seems to be a bit abandoned especially from the behind but considering it’s also free of charge, it’s not a bad option to visit this location. There are several small shops where you can buy souvenirs for affordable price and even WC. Would also be nice if other tourists had manners and not jump in everywhere, otherwise had a good experience. As for the dress-code it’s very often in similar places to be asked to cover shoulders and legs but we didn’t notice any signs and weren’t asked anything so I would recommend to have something on you, just in case :)

An ancient pagoda with the unique architecture, built in the Ly dynasty, abt a thousand years ago (the temple was demolished in the war 1954 and rebuilt right after that). The king Ly built this pagoda after his dream of the female Buddhist goddess. The pagoda is to worship and expresses his thanks to Quan Am Bo Tat. This is a spiritual and cultural symbol of Hanoi.

Vietnamese restaurant
Nhà hàng Tầm Vị in Hanoi is a charming restaurant that embodies the traditional ambiance of a tea house, featuring antique Chinese-style furniture and ornate wooden boards. The menu highlights authentic home-style dishes from Northern Vietnam, with options also available from Central and Southern regions. While it has received one MICHELIN Star, it shares this honor with other esteemed establishments in the area.
Definitely need reservations if you do not want to wait for a table. Most of the dishes orders were good with some dishes maybe not to my liking or at best mediocre. We went in as a group of 8 and may have ordered a bit too much. However the total bill was just at 3 million VND. More dishes were ordered but not all had the photos taken. Reasonably priced for a 1 star Michelin. We were all satisfied and have to say, all their staffs were well versed in English and I overheard one of then who spoke fluent Chinese as well which made the whole experience so much better. There was a server, her name may be Mun but I am not sure. Saw her holding a walkie talkie with the name “Mun” stick on it. Exceptional service from her. Made the experience so much better.
Denne G — Google review
The restaurant offers a charming blend of classic Vietnamese flavors and a distinctive, old‑world Chinese ambience that gives the space a unique, nostalgic feel. From the moment we were seated, the décor—richly carved wooden panels, lanterns, and traditional calligraphy—set the tone for an intimate dining experience. We sampled a selection of dishes, and each one delighted the palate: the broth was fragrant and balanced, the spring rolls were crisp and flavorful, and the grilled fish was perfectly seasoned. The food, overall, was consistently tasty and thoughtfully prepared. The service, while generally friendly, was a bit stretched during peak hours; our server appeared busy and was unable to check in as frequently as we would have liked. Additionally, the restroom was not as clean as we had hoped, which was a minor disappointment in an otherwise enjoyable visit. All in all, the combination of good food, a pleasant atmosphere, and a unique old‑style setting makes it a worthwhile spot, provided you can overlook the occasional hustle and the need for a tidier restroom.

Tam Vi offers an authentic Vietnamese experience that has a feel of quality home cooking and refinement of a polished restaurant. The food was high quality and was extremely quick to come out so good was fresh. Service was super helpful and friendly. We arrived about 5 minutes before our reservation time and was almost seated immediately when their service was pretty crowded. Fantastic quality to how much the meal costed. There are set menus you can try but if you are comfortable, you can order al a carte.

Tam Vi is aesthetically beautiful! The ambience is rustic and really well thought out. The presentation of the dishes is impressive and the food itself was tasty, but for me, it didn’t quite reach the wow factor I was expecting from a Michelin guide spot. Delicious yes, but it was just okay. Service was attentive, which made the experience more enjoyable. Overall, worth visiting for the atmosphere and thoughtful presentation, even if the flavors didn’t completely blow me away.

A Michelin-Star in the Heart of Hanoi Tucked away down a small side street in Hanoi, Tầm Vị offers a unique Vietnamese culinary experience that has earned it a coveted Michelin star. The restaurant showcases fresh ingredients and authentic flavors, creating dishes that are delicious and loaded with umami. The sweet and sour clam soup, brimming with tender clams and vegetables, was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The signature caramelized pork and eggs dish, offered a unique Vietnamese twist on Filipino adobo. The morning glory, cooked to perfection with crispy pork rind and garlic, was the perefct side dish. The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the crispy spring rolls. Wrapping them in lettuce with noodles and basil created a symphony of flavors that was truly exceptional. The restaurant's ambiance is beautiful, with antique decorations and furniture transporting diners to a Vietnam of the past. However, the service fell short of expectations and was a far cry from the attentiveness one would expect at a Michelin-star which almost lowered our rating from a 5 to a 4. Overall, Tầm Vị is a must-visit destination for any foodie. For $27 USD, our four courses were an absolute steal, especially considering the restaurant's Michelin star status. Just remember to call ahead and make a reservation to secure your table.

Simple, by design. Food is fresh, and inexpense. Nothing here will be better than what you can find elsewhere, but it's safe and tells a story of Vietnamese culture. The 2nd menu set, our introduction to this place, showcases food eaten in the summer and winter. The star of the show being the nuts and rice... It tastes like the chefs are tired of painting with the same brush strokes. Would I recommend coming here to cross Michilen Star restuarant off your bucket list? That is for you to decide. What I will say is this place is ok. Nothing more.

Lanterns breathe softly Old stones whisper ancestry— Hanoi holds its past. Wooden beams rising, Echoes of two centuries Shape the dining hall. Stepping through warm light, I feel time shift around me, History made warm. Plates arrive gently, Portions generous and bold— A feast of intent. Herbs dance in silence, Broths hum with quiet power, Salt and fire aligned. Each bite, a journey, Flavours bloom like constellations Across distant skies. Ginger storms awaken, Citrus falls like gentle rain, Pepper sings its song. In that vivid surge, The world around me dissolves— Only taste remains. I breathe in the steam, A fragrant map of regions Born from ancient soil. The chef’s careful craft Feels like a blessing offered With unwavering grace. Rice, meat, leaf, and flame Merge in perfect harmony— A symphony stirred. For a fleeting beat, I dine beyond Earth’s borders, Held in wonder’s hands. Guests murmur softly, Yet the meal commands silence, Art in every bowl. A Michelin star Should shine here without question— Excellence confirmed. Tradition renewed, Modern vision intertwined, A story well served. As I leave the glow, Night folds gently behind me— Still, the flavours stay. Hanoi remembers, Through this beautiful kitchen, How its heart once beat.

Every dish we tried was fantastic, from the flavorful betel leaves to the refreshing pig's ear salad. The stir-fry dishes were especially memorable—savory, perfectly seasoned, and full of that "wok hey" magic that, as we Cantonese say, is essential for great stir-fry. They offer two versions of the stir-fried beef with fresh bamboo: one with sour bamboo and one without. The sour bamboo version? Absolutely divine! The crispy roasted chicken, green mango salad, and fried goby fish were also standouts, each dish showcasing the restaurant's attention to detail and authentic flavors. The staff, though young, were incredibly friendly and professional, adding to the lively and welcoming vibe. Dishes come out quickly, so I recommend ordering starters first and then mains to pace your meal. Portions are generous, so no need to over-order. A must-visit for anyone craving authentic Vietnamese cuisine with a Michelin twist!

Gia Restaurant, located in the heart of Hanoi, offers a unique dining experience that celebrates Vietnamese cuisine and culture. Despite its Western appearance, Gia is known for its upscale Vietnamese dining experience. Led by Chef Sam Tran, the restaurant has earned a Michelin star for its seasonal menu that showcases Vietnam's culinary heritage. The dishes are intricately presented and feature a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. A dinner at Gia lasts around 2.
We had an awesome 2‑hour lunch at Gia Hanoi. The Vietnamese tasting menu was fantastic, and their alcohol‑free cocktails made with all the local fruits were seriously next level—every sip just made the food pop. Dessert was the perfect finish! As someone who loves bold flavors, I was totally hooked. The staff were great, and even though we showed up as walk‑ins, they fit us right in— something we deeply appreciate. We recommend opting for the drink pairing package—it elevates the entire experience!!!

I always try to find a fine dining restaurant with a prix fixe menu in each city I travel to, and the experience at Gia was one of my favorite and certainly will be one of my most memorable. The food and service was excellent. They also invited each guest into the kitchen to meet Chef Sam Tran and sample some of their delicious juices. I enjoyed the focus on trying to keep to Vietnamese cuisine roots. I've considered Vietnamese food to be my favorite, and this experience only solidified that. I highly recommend and will visit again when I return to Hanoi.

Excellent service from the entire team from beginning to end made this visit a very memorable experience. I had scraped my knee moments before my reservation and the staff was kind enough to provide some first aid, really putting the hospital in hospitality! The menu was well curated and cohesive with most of the ingredients sourced locally. The courses were technically excellent and Vietnamese inspired. I was also offered a kitchen tour and had an opportunity to speak with Chef Sam Tran. Great team. Great people. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a local, culturally inspired fine-dining menu with top tier service and dedication to giving your experience a personal touch.

Dining at Gia, I had high expectations being a 1-star Michelin restaurant. The restaurant was styled in modern Vietnamese house with dim lighting. It was elegant and cozy, and where we were seated on the 2nd floor, we had a view of the kitchen. Seafood was the limelight of our dinner tasting menu for the evening. In the middle of the course, we were given sour plums and a chocolate ball bursting with oozy plum goodness. They cleansed and whetted our appetite for the next few dishes. Our dining experience was elevated as we were ushered into the kitchen after all the savoury dishes were served. We had a first-hand look at the kitchen and the Head Chef served us a couple of shots of their fremented juice. The shots were made from local fruit (many unknown to me) and topped with a cold foam. And a first for me, we were then ushered down to the 1st floor for our desserts. It was a different dining atmosphere. The desserts were exceptional that I would love for seconds. Especially the second dessert that featured chilli with ice cream made with mango pickled in fish sauce, and plum and pandan "mousse". So dainty, elegant and a medley of flavours at play. Service was attentive and warm, and thank you for accommodating to our request. Also the staff gave a list of recommended places to eat and visit, and a small bag of housemade preserved fruit. Would love to come back again to try other seasonal menus.

Wow! Overall, an incredible experience from beginning to end. Gia is incredibly deserving of their Michelin Star. The restaurant successfully reinvents and elevates Vietnamese cuisine, creating innovative dishes and flavour profiles that accentuate local Vietnamese ingredients. The alcohol and wine pairings are cleverly executed and enhance the dining experience. The service was friendly, attentive, warm and comforting. We definitely felt the level of passion and commitment that the team has in order to craft and curate a seamless experience for their patrons. The presentation of the courses is gorgeous and the plating is neat and vibrant. The level of execution is of high quality. The decor of the restaurant is stunning. The professionalism of the staff is commendable. Most importantly, the food is delicious! Nov 2024

Such a great experience overall at Gia! If you like fine dining/Michelin and come in with an open mind you will love this spot! I am a Vietnamese American and enjoyed the unique innovations and incorporations of Vietnamese ingredients! ** BOOKING ** I emailed them to confirm reservation and they sent me a deposit link! They were very prompt in response and they confirmed my reservation after deposit, via email and the day before. //DINNER// We came 15 minutes early and surprisingly they let us in early! Someone saw us and legit escorted us over the street walkway which was nice! We then went to the main dining room and was introduced to amuse bouche which was delicious! We then had multiple courses which incorporated so many cool ingredients like unique fish sauces, lotus, mantis shrimp, dried scallops! Each one had a unique story from traditional Vietnamese practices but they made it into innovative creative dishes! I think people think Vietnamese food isnt seen as elevated but I think the chefs unique cooking was a great experience and can turn that view point around! The presentation was also beautiful! **NON ALCOHOLIC PAIRING** I was blown away by the pairing! The unique kombucha to all of the 6 drinks! Each one was so aromatic and reminded me of something from my childhood and tastes exactly like what they say it is! They used cool ingredients like tamarind, soy, to name a few! ** EXPERIENCE ** This was a fun and unique experience! We also got to meet the chef and try a unique juice! ** SERVICE ** Service is attentive and friendly! Everyone was helpful and there are small details that was nice. **PRICE** The price was roughly $111 USD which compared to Los Angeles Michelins is a great price (typically $300 USD min). While expensive in comparison to a meal in VN it is still a good price compared internationally! ** OVERALL ** I would recommend this to anyone!

For a Michelin-starred place and the price we paid, the whole experience was below expectations. The service was good but felt a bit scripted. The waiters didn’t speak English well, so it would have been great to have a menu that explained all the ingredients. The ambience was very nice, though we didn’t like that guests were seated at the entrance for desserts. The food was nicely plated but, in terms of taste and quality, quite disappointing. Overall, we found the dishes lacked freshness, product quality was not the best, and the seasoning was mostly too complex and neither refined nor well-balanced. The amuse-bouche must have been sitting there for quite some time, the salmon and mussel were not the freshest, and the tartlet was soggy and not crispy. The mantis shrimp was overcooked, the lobster was nice but overpowered by the three sauces it came with. The palate cleanser was a bomb of saltiness and acidity – very interesting but not at all suitable as a palate cleanser. Desserts war alright, but didn't excite us either.

If you want a very special dinner in Hanoi this is the place! 9 gorgeous and delicious courses. The plating is like art and the flavors are so unique, surprising and delicious. The service was outstanding! Someone even met us at the taxi across the street so we wouldn’t have to cross the street alone(if you even to Hanoi you know this can be a scary experience!).

Restaurant
Bún cá Chấm Gốc Đa is a beloved Vietnamese dry rice noodle dish, particularly popular in Hanoi. It features freshly fried fish with a crispy exterior and tender flesh, served alongside rice vermicelli and a flavorful garlic chili sauce. The dish is known for its delicious dipping sauce and marinated fish, creating a delightful combination of sweet, sour, and spicy flavors.
It’s still as delicious as it was when I ate it the first time a rew years ago. The fried fish is perfecty crispy and hot eating together with the sour vegetable soup and garlic chilly fish sauce and noodles. I love this more than Pho, for sure. It’s so busy and crowded during lunch time but it’s calmer in the evening.

(Translated by Google) The food is okay and edible. The fish noodle soup includes noodles, fish and soup for only 40k. In the picture, there are 3 portions of fish. 2 people should eat 3 portions, but 1 portion per person is a bit too little. The fried fish is a bit too crispy and hard, the fish pieces are big and hard so it's hard to eat. The vegetable soup is a bit salty. Regarding hygiene, it's not clean and tidy. The restaurant is very crowded with people ordering via delivery. There is also a big fan when sitting there.

(Translated by Google) Seeing that this restaurant is famous and has many reviews on Tiktok, I went in to try it and in conclusion, I was quite disappointed. The fish noodle soup is just average and not as delicious as the reviews say, the fried fish has a lot of small bones, the accompanying broth is sweet but has a lot of MSG, the price has increased recently so it's not as cheap as before, the restaurant is also dirty. The biggest minus point of the restaurant is that the owner or the owner's daughter has a bad attitude, yelling and bullying the delivery guys in a very unpleasant way, the customers are not friendly, talking to the kitchen so loudly that it drowns out the customers' voices. In short, with this quality of food and attitude, there is no way to go back, I don't understand how it is still popular.

The establishment was created to provide a venue for foreign guests such as ambassadors, journalists, and tourists from all over the world. With its stunning view and professional service, La Table Hanoia offers an exquisite dining experience. The service here is exceptional, with a fancy yet comfortable decor that creates a pleasant atmosphere. They even offered us a free cake to celebrate, which was a thoughtful touch. The staff are incredibly attentive, but of course, it comes with a higher price tag—though it’s definitely worth it for the experience.

Stepping into La Table Hanoia, you immediately feel a sense of warmth, almost like being in your second home. The space is elegantly arranged, with lacquer art woven into even the smallest details, yet it remains inviting, cozy and friendly. You’ll find everything from authentic regional specialties to dishes that carry the essence of French cuisine. Whether it’s a family meal, a business gathering, or an evening with friends, La Table Hanoia delivers the very best of dining. Such a hidden gem in Hanoi! I was invited by my friends for a quick lunch, and honestly, I really had no idea about this restaurant before. But wow, what a hidden gem tucked away in the old quarter! It’s a perfect little escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, offering a cozy yet elegant vibe. The food? Just bang on. We ordered a 3-course lunch set menu with 2 options each. My starter was Oyster ravioli with green herb sauce. The ravioli made with squid ink was delicate and the oyster filling was fresh and rich which went really well with the green herb sauce. I should have ordered a glass of champagne instead of a kombucha… The main was Pan-fried salmon with pesto tagliatelle and red wine sauce - well, such a classic dish that I didnt expect much. But it turned out to be really good. The salmon filet was perfectly cooked and still moist inside. The pesto tagliatelle was fresh and the red wine sauce brought everything well together. Actually I wished to have a bit more of tagliatelle. The meal ended with a smooth and rich chocolate tart with a buttery crust, some red fruit coulis and caramel ice cream. The only flaw was the ice cream already melted a half of it right after being served (maybe as the weather was scorching?!) The service was also spot on—super friendly and attentive, nothing to complain. Overall, I really enjoyed the meal, absolutely worth the value. I will be back to try their A la carte menu but it looks a bit pricey.

decent food but the staff are god awful: not welcoming at all and will take any chance to snap back at you. I asked for a charcuterie board, she said we didn’t have them so I had to quite figuratively point the word charcuterie imprinted on the menu for her to reluctantly take the order. Not to mention they were just ordering each other around loud as hell right in front of all the diners. Honestly just surprised management hasn’t caught on after skimming thru the reviews here with people having experienced the same issues.

Wow!!! I’m amused. Had a solo night out and loved every bit of it. I was welcomed with a warm smile, the vibe was cozy and inviting with a touch of a top notch service. Quan, the bartender made an incredible Hanoi Pho cocktail and even shared the story behind it which made it feel extra special. Đình who took care of my table was super friendly, attentive and gave great food recommendation and the food Bun Cha itself was exceptional, way above what I’m use to. Even the wine glass was sparkling clean and that little detail really stood out. To top is all off, someone was playing the piano while I was there which added such a beautiful, relaxing touch to the whole evening. Definitely a place I would come back to. Solo or not

Shopping mall
Vincom Center Bà Triệu is a high-end commercial center located in the heart of Hanoi. It consists of three towers, offering luxury office blocks in towers A and B, and high-quality apartments in tower C. The shopping mall within Vincom Center Bà Triệu features a wide range of domestic and international brands, including fashion, health care products, cosmetics, furniture, houseware, and electronic products. This iconic destination is known for attracting both tourists and locals with its luxurious offerings.
It’s an average shopping center with many well-known international and local brands. The first floor is dedicated to beauty — you'll find cosmetics, makeup, and skincare departments all in one place. Fashion begins on the second floor, offering a variety of clothing stores. The top floor features a food court with a range of typical Asian options — Chinese, Korean, sushi, and more. A nice place to visit if you're in the area.

We are visiting Hanoi, Vietnam as a tourist from India. Super typhoon Yagi also thought it to be a fit time to visit Hanoi. All the trips were cancelled so we visited this center for some shopping. But unfortunately, most of the shops were shut here also. We came, moved on all the floors, saw many premium brand stores. But all closed. In normal days the experience would be much better.

Vincom Center Bà Triệu is one of Hanoi’s most popular shopping destinations, offering a great mix of international brands, local boutiques, and entertainment options all under one roof. The mall is spacious, clean, and well-organized, making it easy to navigate whether you’re here to shop, dine, or just escape the heat. You’ll find everything from fashion and cosmetics to electronics and home goods. The dining area has a good range of choices, from quick snacks to sit-down restaurants, and there’s even a cinema upstairs — perfect for a full day out. One of the highlights is its central location, making it convenient for both locals and visitors. The staff are generally friendly, and the atmosphere is comfortable without feeling overly crowded on weekdays (weekends can be busier). A reliable spot for shopping, entertainment, or simply enjoying some air-conditioned comfort in the heart of Hanoi.

The Vietnam National Museum of History is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. It consists of two buildings showcasing ancient artifacts, Buddhist art, statues, and war relics. The museum offers a comprehensive journey through Vietnamese history from prehistoric times to the modern era, spanning over 4,000 years. The architectural style of the museum reflects a blend of French and Chinese influences, making it an intriguing sight to explore.

Quite interesting with many original artefacts. We visited both the buildings which are close by so if you want to really look at it, give yourself a few hours. Good information but not very good or lack lustre presentation. The architecture of the place is quite nice, and the vibe is very quiet. You will need atleast 2 hours to explore the buildings. The Vietnam National Museum of History in Hanoi costs 40,000 VND for adults, 20,000 VND for college and university students, and 10,000 VND for school students. The museum is open daily, except Mondays, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM.

Lots to learn here. There are two buildings of historical displays for you to enjoy, and they are very detailed. You have the option to get a tour guide or an audio guide, but we didn't get either. Just walking around and reading displays took us about two hours. The first building is dedicated to prehistoric artifacts like skulls, pottery, jewelry, carvings, dioramas, and the like. We learned a lot here about how even the first people in Vietnam resisted invasion by the Chinese (as they did later on in their more modern history), and how there used to be monarchial rule in the country. The second building is home to perhaps some of the more famous Vietnamese history, where they struggled for independence against French colonial rule, and of course the Vietnamese-American war. They have interesting artifacts like notebooks from Ho Chi Minh himself, early flags from the founders of the Vietnamese Communist Party, and even the tail of a bomb that was dropped on one of the provinces. They have very well-curated displays and extensive archives, so you'll really have a lot to read and take in. Since we visited during independence day weekend, we were also lucky to find the Binh Dan Hoc Vu exhibit, which was about education. I am not sure how long this exhibit runs, but it shared a lot about the government's effort to educate people post-war. My only comment is that I wish the building itself was more... fixed? The exhibits are great but the building is a little worn down, and I think it's in the best interest of the guests and the displays themselves if there were to be a safer museum environment. Still, the museum staff are very attentive and did a great job of attending to any questions we had. Minor note is that they do have a lunch break at 12nn. So even if you're in the museum during the said lunch break, you will be asked to go out and come back at 1pm. This was fine and customary I think in many establishments in Hanoi.
Hazel G — Google review
The building is a two-storey setup: on the ground floor you’ll find a detailed display of how Vietnam formed — tools, artifacts, culture and all the historical stuff. The second floor has a more modern feel (I don’t remember exactly what years it covers) but the ground floor was my favourite because it gives a lot of rich information about Vietnam’s history.

I’m amazed with the amount of history that was collected and preserved throughout the years. You can see a lot of dedication, time and detail spent on the pottery, artwork and crafts. If you are history enthusiast I’d recommend a half a day, to truly enjoy and learn. Perfect for an indoor activity.

The have a roof top garden music venue that is tight and cozy. I ate on a tiny little balcony with a great view of the alley and a triangle corner building —- 100k cover for the music.

We quite like this place. A small cafe-type eatery with chill vibes to laze or meet up with friends or, just to rest the aching legs after a long walk. Ambience is really nice with retro decor n furnishings. Staff could speak good English. Food was not too bad as well. We ordered their avocado toast and it turned out pretty neat! Generally, a pleasant experience.

I always love the vibe of this café, cozy, friendly and welcoming. The staff are helpful and super nice. Plus points! The food is great and the portions are generous. I definitely recommend the avocado & ricotta toast, it tastes amazing as always ☺️

Great place to hang out. Also open quite late. The staff speaks perfect English. The tea is great, I like the chai there. The hibicus tea is also nice, more on the healthy side. The smoothie is also more on healthy side (not to my taste though). Overall, it’s a nice place with good vibe. Nice music. Friendly staff.

The place itself and the atmosphere are super comfortable, the staff is extremely attentive and friendly, they speak English very well so communication is very easy. The food is also very delicious, we tried several different dishes and were extremely satisfied with all of them. The prices are very reasonable. I would absolutely recommend going there if you are in Hanoi.

absolutely amazing place! we went there a couple of times, the food was always really delicious, the staff are super friendly and the overall atmosphere is very cozy :) i'd probably just return to Hanoi to visit this place again^^ the staff all speak very good english and they even have a variety of vegetarian and vegan options!

A must visit. You've seen it on Tiktok so see it in person. The food was outstanding and the staff are polite and courteous. Would highly recommend.

Came here and got some Banh Mi with some friends. Really tasty meal, more on the expensive side but was worth it. Really cool interior design and nice vibes. I believe they do live music in the week which would be nice. Plenty of seating downstairs more available upstairs. They ask you to fill out a little review when you pay for your food/drinks which was fine.

Showroom Oto Vinfast Gia Lâm is a significant historical site in Hanoi, Vietnam. It is located at Ba Dinh Square, where President Ho Chi Minh declared the country's independence from France. Visitors can explore various attractions nearby such as the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, his stilt house, and the One Pillar Pagoda. The area also features the Museum of Ethnology which showcases the traditions of Vietnam's 54 ethnic groups.
It was my first time being there. The square was huge and the mausoleum looked grandeur and solemn. Next to the mausoleum, are Ho Chi Minh Museum (foreign tourists have to buy tickets) and One Pillar Pagoda that are also worth to see.
Thanh H — Google review
The square is very spacious, very neat, clean and well maintained. You can take photos and stay for 1 hour.

Free entry, wear long pants/dress if you want to enter some places. Not recommending going on Monday, some areas are closed.

Visited HCM Mausoleum that morning. Stumbled on the flag lowering ceremony at 9pm that night. Very interesting and moving. Very helpful guard gave us best tips in good English and welcomed us to this special precision ceremony.

If you ever visited a communist country the vibe is the same like in any other main squares. Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh is simple and bit overwhelming.

If you want to see the crypt of ho chi ming president you must go between 7 and 11 in the morning. They only open few hours and it is very protected by many soldiers. They ask you to keep the bags and the cameras in one store. But is worth plan the morning too see the crypt.

Great place. Please visit it at 9pm if you have chance. Everyday at 9pm, they eill take the big flag in fromt of Ho chi minh mausoleum down and hang it again at 5 a.m the next day. It is great to see this occation with 40 soliders will do it solemnly. Amazing to see.

I went to Ba Dinh Square at 6AM to see the flag raising ceremony, and it touched my heart. I want to tell all of my compatriots that you should go to this place to see the good moment one time in your life, if you can arrange your time. The atmosphere around the square is very fresh. Be noted that you have to wear something that covers your knees and shoulders.

Pho restaurant
Phở Gà Nguyệt is a bustling eatery located in Hanoi, known for serving up delicious chicken pho both in dry and soupy variations. It's a popular spot among locals and visitors alike, offering a quick and satisfying dining experience. Situated near the renowned Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su, it provides an excellent alternative for those looking to avoid long queues.
The PHỞ is delicious, with tender noodles and a light, delicate broth. The chicken is sweet and flavorful. The staff work quickly with professional movements. The price is a bit higher than local eateries, but it’s definitely worth it. I heard the PHỞ TRỘN here is also very good, but I haven’t had the chance to try it yet, I’ll save it for next time
Tiệp N — Google review
Very simple shopfront by the roadside. Their chicken pho tasted like a nice soul-warming dish. They are very generous with the serving of the chicken breast, thigh and offals. Ordered a side of pork meatballs which seemed handmade with proper pork and black fungus in it - none of those cheap processed pork balls! However, the hygiene of the place didn’t seem to be the best but we did squeeze the lime that was left on a basket on a table and we had no problems the next day. Really wanted to try the chili but decided against it.
Lola L — Google review
Sgrean discovering good food in Hanoi 😁 Like & Follow me for more. 👍👍👍 The establishment here does Chicken Pho. We ordered the thigh meat with soup. Broth is flavourful, and meat is tender, however the extra drumstick, somehow its tougher. 😂 The dry version is tasty too, you can add in chill, garlic and condiments available on the table. Overall its a good meal. 打卡成功!
NeoFood — Google review
This is the kind of place that makes flying all the way to Vietnam worth the effort. It's a typical Vietnamese restaurant with all the prep, cooking and serving done right in front of you, nearly on the sidewalk. I had the "dry" chicken pho, which is the same as pho, without the soup part although you do get a small bowl of it with the meal. It was super tasty. You will likely share a table with strangers, but that is part of the experience.
Alex Z — Google review
My local friend recommended here and she was right!!!! I came here twice and ordered chicken pho w/o soup. The sauce was rich, the noodle texture was just perfectly firm, and chicken meat was tender and flavorful. This is a MUST GO place if you like chicken pho.
05 Y — Google review
Juicy chicken breast. If you get the extra meat one, it’ll be a lot. One normal + one extra meat one were perfect for 2 people. I could ask for not putting coriander. Soup with some red chilies is super good. I taste the lime flavor, which isn’t necessarily my favorite taste.
Seokyung K — Google review
The chicken pho is very good, and the service is fast. However, the downside is that the place is quite cramped, and you will definitely have to wait a long time during peak tourist seasons. Another downside is that even though there are very few seats, the food shop still charges for take-out boxes instead of offering them for free, even though doing so could encourage take-away orders, help reduce crowding, shorten the wait for seats, and lessen the amount of on-site service needed.
Khương Q — Google review
Ordered via Grab. The dry pho is REALLY GOOD! this one is highly recommended. The chicken pho with the soup is also delicious but ive tried a better one at sapa. Nonetheless, worth it!

Bánh Cuốn Bà Hoành is a charming spot known for serving traditional Vietnamese dishes, with a focus on their delightful and nutritious steamed rice rolls. These light and savory rolls are filled with a flavorful mixture of seasoned ground pork, finely chopped mushrooms, and aromatic herbs. A highlight of the restaurant is the option to enjoy these delicious rice rolls with well-marinated grilled pork meat, creating an unforgettable combination.
A very good Vietnamese restaurant in Hanoi, where the food was prepared extremely quickly. The rolls cake was delicious and generously filled with ingredients – probably the best I’ve had so far. The kumquat tea was refreshing. When I received the vegetarian rolls, I was a bit surprised, as I had expected something different on the plate. Still, I definitely recommend visiting this place.

Spacious location with simple, no-frills decor. The menu offers a wide variety of Vietnamese street food classics, making it a great choice for anyone who wants to try many different dishes but doesn’t have time to explore street stalls. A clean, decent spot for a quick and satisfying experience of local flavors.

One of the place that you can have Banh Cuon and many traditional Vietnamese food. It's kinda busy in the early morning and lunch but the food is served quickly. You can have the order and postpay in front door. They have the fish sauce with Ca Cuong (traditional recipe) that make the the sauce is richer and more flavor.
Jason N — Google review
This was my first time trying out banh cuon nhan + thit nuong. The rice roll can be a bit dry so it's perfect to soak it a bit with the meatball and pork meat which were served in the sauce. I came during early evening on weekday and not many ground staff as I waited for around 5 minutes for someone to give me the menu and the lady was not too friendly. But the food was served swiftly as there were not many customers. Paid 60k for that meal and might go back to try other menu again.
Steph — Google review
I literally could not get enough of this place. Their dip and grilled pork to go with the rice sheets is out of this world. The best most tasty dish I had while in Hanoi. This restaurant alone would be reason to move to Hanoi.

One of the best Bun Cha we’ve had! Very fast service, good variety, helpful staff. And sitting on tiny stools at a low table on the sidewalk added to the experience! We will definitely be back!

Small table, 2 ppl max, but very compact as all the cutlery are on the side. The food is delicious and very Hanoi style, you will get food and banh cuon on separate dishes.

Vietnamese restaurant
Luk Lak Vietnamese Restaurant is a trendy spot in Hanoi, offering classic Vietnamese dishes with a modern twist. The restaurant boasts a fusion of traditional and contemporary decor, creating an artsy ambiance that immerses diners in Vietnamese culture. With a cafe on the first floor and the main dining area on the second, it's a multi-level culinary experience.
Came here last minute without reservation, the staffs spotted us and usher us to a empty table on the 2nd floor. Food was served quickly after the orders was placed, loved the soup, the grilled pork and the mushroom stuffed with pumpkin. The glutinous rice was very dry, could not finish at all. Overall is a good dining experience to savor authentic Hanoi cuisine!

Was recommended this by one of the staff in The Sofitel, It's near The Opera so any easy walk from hotels in the French Quarter, Nice looking and inviting frontage simply decorated, we were a party of 4 walk in. The staff were very accomadating and offered us a table on the 2nd floor, and once they realised that one of the party was unable to walk upstairs immediately reshuffled even though very busy moved tables about for us to sit on the ground floor with a great people watching view. Food is amazing, we ate tapas style with a few sharing plates, the quality of the food is just incredible, nice presentation, very well seasoned and presented Yum yum Check the 📸 it says it all

It’s not that the food was bad, it was actually decent, but in Hanoi, the real charm lies in the street food scene, not in sit-down restaurants. Eating here felt a bit too polished, missing that lively street buzz that makes the city’s food so special. We tried the soft-shell crab summer rolls, the broccoli with scallops, and a crispy duck salad. All three dishes were fine, but nothing particularly memorable. The duck was a bit too chewy, the sauce for the summer rolls lacked flavor, and the scallops didn’t really taste like much. Overall, I’d give it a solid 2.5 out of 5! okay for a quiet dinner, but definitely not a must-try in Hanoi.

This is a Michelin Guide 2024 & 2025 Vietnamese restaurant. We booked weeks ahead. The restaurant was fully booked when we arrived. As we were a party of 8, we were put in a private room. The service staff was excellent and patient. We ordered 8 dishes plus dessert. All were very impressive. The best were the porridge and soft shell crab roll. Worth a revisit.

Had such a great dinner at Lik Lak! The food was seriously good ... everything we tried was full of flavor and beautifully done. The place has a really nice vibe too, cozy but still classy. We even got to meet the sous-chef, who was super kind and clearly loves her craft. Felt special to be there and totally deserves the Michelin recognition. Vietnam has amazing food!

A huge mistake and lie… We came here with an expectation since it’s in Michelin list but such a big disappointment… We ordered grilled chicken that is quite expensive but it was the hardest and tasteless chicken I’ve ever had in my life. It comes with 2 sauces: one with lemon or yuzu ( that was nice) and another one with tomato and garlic was very tasteless. I think in general everything was just tasteless here. For instance, we had mushroom spring rolls that was also tasteless. It comes as 5 pieces and we only had 2, the rest we just left because it doesn’t have any taste. Lastly, we had catfish soup and it was also very tasteless. Almost like a plain water with tasteless chopped fish inside so again we didn’t finish it. The portions are huge, very irrelevantly. For example the soup comes in a ramen bowl. You just can’t finish! Also the spring rolls. With one portion you can easily get full. Also the prices are quite high.. We were very much disappointed and leaving with an empty stomach… Unfortunately couldn’t finish anything here, such a waste of food. Very sorry.. (The best thing was the sticky rice comes with the chicken 4,5 out of 5)

Super good!! Found it on the michelin guide and wow!! Everything we tried was very good and very unique as well. Should try the beef salad. soooo yummy and reasonable prices

It is a more upscale Vietnamese restaurant with beautiful decor and powerful AC (the coldest place in Hanoi 😃). The food is outstanding. I understand why it lands on the Bib Gourmand. The spring rolls are super fresh. The fish with sweet and sour sauce was tender and full of flavor.

Nestled in the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter, Essence Restaurant is a sophisticated dining venue located within the Essence Hanoi Hotel & Spa. This elegant restaurant offers a blend of traditional regional Vietnamese specialties and Western cuisine, providing an array of options for discerning travelers. The menu showcases authentic Vietnamese delicacies such as duck coconut curry, bun cha, and cha ca la long alongside Western fare.
After a disappointing experience at Tam Vi, we decided to move to a nearby restaurant, Essence Restaurant and it was the best decision we made. The service was excellent, with staff who were warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The food was outstanding, beautifully prepared, and full of flavor. From start to finish, everything about this restaurant exceeded our expectations. Highly recommended for anyone who values both great service and delicious food. Highlight: Best Customer Service we have experienced in Vietnam 🇻🇳

We came to visit as we had a few hours before our train left and wanted a relaxing place to sit, eat, and look at views. We were not disappointed, this spot had everything we were looking for - delicious food, great atmosphere, and beautiful views. Most of all Nora was such a wonderful server, we would go back just for her! She was so helpful with tips for our trip to Ninh Binh and suggested us splitting 1 pho into two bowls instead of 2 orders of pho - she was right, more than enough food! Do yourself a favour and come here!

We started our visit to Vietnam in Saigon, then SaPa, and ended it in Hanoi at the Aira and ate at The Essence Restaurant. We absolutely saved the best for last. We have done 2 foodie tours. The food at Essence beat them. The staff was happy, helpful, kind... Just amazing. The hotel rooms and staff were also truly wonderful. Stay here. Eat here. Enjoy Hanoi Vietnam. What a wonderful place.

Fantastic food at an unbelievable price. Very nice atmosphere and welcoming staff and the food was even better! They also had a 20% discount when we attended, but we tipped as we felt guilty leaving on the original price. Would highly recommend.

Delicious food and really welcoming and engaging service from all the staff. An oasis of calm in the busy centre of Hanoi. A little more expensive than the average restaurant here, but it was worth it and definitely felt like an up market experience, with a warm welcome making it very relaxing. We came for a quick bite but stayed for a long, leisurely and very tasty lunch. Strongly recommend this restaurant.

We stayed at the hotel and tried the restaurant our last night there. Food and service was great! We tried several different courses and all was very good. Hamburger, Bamboo beef, Spaghetti Bolognese, Sauteed Beef Basil (was lit on fire!!) And of course the desserts didnt disappoint either. After the food - try the Sky Bar.
