Ferrara in 4 days

If you only have 4 days to spend in Ferrara, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
This is a city of art and culture, with a rich history and a scenic landscape. The historic center is a pedestrianized area where you can admire the architecture; its Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings are an open-air museum. There are many places of interest in Ferrara, too, from the ancient "Castello Estense" to the "Botanical Garden", from the "Museo della Cattedrale" to the "Palazzo Schifanoia,” Ferrara is a gem that must be experienced.
With favorites like Al Brindisi, Museo Nazionale dell'Ebraismo Italiano e della Shoah - MEIS, and Il Leon D'Oro, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like The Lab - Food to Feel and Bar Duomo so you can get the best taste of Ferrara while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Estense Castle, also known as the Castle of San Michele, is a grand 14th-century moated castle in Ferrara, Italy. Originally built for political and military purposes, it later became the residence of the Este family. The castle boasts four impressive towers and holds over six centuries of history within its walls. Visitors can explore lavish private chambers, a chapel, prison, and a museum showcasing precious artworks.
Of all the attractions in Ferrara, the Estense Castle is the most iconic. We visited on a Thursday morning and there were very few other visitors. Our ticket was part of the MyFE card, which is definitely worth purchasing for a few days ( if nothing else it reduces the tourist tax. We paid just over €25 euros for a 6 day pass. The castle is most impressive from the exterior., however unlike some castles I have visited in Italy it has a good degree of information and exhibits as you go round. Dont expect to wizz round, it seemed like a labyrinth, and we were there for about 2 hours. The Lions Tower is about 112 steps, not too bad compared to many towers Ive climbed. Obviously there not as tall, you still had a good view over the old town. When we visited (June 2025) The visit finished qith an exhibition of photography by Art Kane. Hands up, I had never heard if the guy, but if you are person of a certain age (like myself) you could help but recognise many of his iconic images. The icing on the cake were the Andy Worhols. The exhibition runs until September and is definitely an added bonus. You can visit the courtyard for free and there were at least 3 entrances across the moat. The tourist office is also located in the courtyard. Ferrara is a definitely not a tourist town as such and can therefore be enjoyed without too much hussle and bussle. On the other hand it is most certainly a working town and unlike many of the more famous historic centres is a mixture of old and new, and lacks a bit of charm as a result. The towns historical sites are a little far apart, walkable, but given it was 35 degrees plus the week we stayed seemed a little too far on occasions. Overall we really enjoyed the castle and would highly recommend it.

A very impressive castle surrounded by the greenest water I’ve ever seen. Located just at the entrance of Ferrara medieval beautiful down town. What makes it more perfect is that it is absolutely free of charge, no entrance fee, no packed tourists. Just for you to enjoy it by yourself…

Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, also known as Claudio Abbado Theatre, is an opera house with a rich history. Built between 1786 and 1797, it exudes the charm of old-style concert venues. The seating mainly consists of boxes rising around the stage, providing a unique viewing experience. While not the most comfortable for those in the second row of a box, the theater's architecture is undeniably beautiful and makes for stunning concert backdrops.
Great. Very good organization, the best concert, and of course the best for drink.
Gaber M — Google review
Their booking website looks like it came straight out of the .com bubble… circa 1998. I took the photo from booth 16, seat 5. 35 Euros. it’s insane that they sell those seats, you can see 1% of the left side. No warning on the website. cashgrab During the break I explained one of the attendants the situation and they were able to help and find a better seat. Feedback for venue: you got to mark those angled back seats as low visibility so people are aware of what they buy. Even better, look at LA Disney Hall’s booking system that shows the seat point of view.
ES T — Google review
Beautiful!! Have some pictures about the concerts and is pretty amazing the architecture

Good concert venue in the old style, seating mainly in boxes rising up around the stage, not the most comfortable seating if you are in the second row of a box as you are in a high chair.

Espresso bar
Leon D'Oro is a renowned restaurant and pastry shop that has been a staple in Ferrara for over 40 years. Situated in the historic Estense ducal palace, it offers a variety of dining experiences, from enjoying breakfast in the shadow of the cathedral to savoring typical Ferrarese specialties in its restaurant within a splendid exhibition hall or outdoors on Piazza Municipale. The cafe and restaurant provide an inviting space to indulge in beverages, desserts, or full meals.
Okay so it’s the main place in the square and as a proper tourist you should avoid these places right? Well not here. I’m British and been working remotely for the last 3 summers in Ferrara so I know the place inside out. This place is great for aperitivo. Their Negronis are the best in town and I think I’ve been everywhere now :) If you’re a spritz person then number 10 behind in the square is the best.
Adam — Google review
Nice reataurant with Italian food. It is very large, with a lot of tables.
Marko S — Google review
The place is centrally located serving customers in 3 different areas which makes it unique. The area in the square may be surrounded by pots with green bushes creating a refreshing atmosphere but also infested with pigeons flying and walking around. The staff were unfriendly. We had to call them 4 times. We were served at a table full of bread crumbs; they didn't bother to clean it. But that's not all. The panino we ordered was stale...as if we weren't paying for it. Still regret eating there. Once you leave the square and head for the castle you'll be spoilt for choice.
Jesthem — Google review
Absolutely wanted to try the local specialty called Pampetato and did it at Leon d’Oro with a nice cup of coffee. Even though this not the most delicate pastry on earth it tastes quite good and makes the perfect quick break for a long day around Ferrara. Will come back to try the torta tenerina!
Julien M — Google review
Had a good experience here as it was relatively empty given the rain. Servers were friendly and helpful for the tourist in me! Thank you Letizia for your kind introductions to the food and attentiveness! Tried the pasticchio di maccheroni with sweet crust and it was not bad although I was not quite used to the contrast. Food was hot and the sauce inside is slightly reminiscent of a mac and cheese. Good location and decent prices!

Sat for 30 minutes after being sat, no one acknowledged us, even after politely trying to get the servers attention. 10/10 do not recommend. We weren’t in a hurry, but other tables were sat after us, and served before us. We literally left without anyone ever speaking to us.

The Cathedral of Ferrara, also known as the Basilica Cattedrale di San Giorgio or Duomo di Ferrara, is a stunning 12th-century structure located in Piazza della Cattedrale. Its ornate three-tiered marble facade showcases a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles. The cathedral houses a baroque interior and is connected to the Archbishops Palace by a secret passage.
We went during Christmas season. Unfortunately the cathedral was under remodeling operations. But the piazza, the surrounding buildings, the castle next door, and the vibe of the market more than made up for the construction inconvenience. Ferrara is such a beautiful city.

Others have given a quite detailed review so will not repeat all the details again. I think the two things to note are: 1) On a hot day this is the perfect refuge for a while. and 2) the interior is beautiful. We have visited many many churches and cathedrals in Italy and across Europe and this stands with the best of them. Admission is free.
Larry D — Google review
It is now under restoration, the process and studies of which are exhibited, nice to be in a working restoration site. Interesting stuff how medieval architecture is hidden underneath what is currently visible and material issues they are encoutering, info in italian mostly though

This was second time we visited Ferrara. Unfortunately the tower is under renovation, but this time we visited the interior. There was no entrance fee. I was really impressed by how much history is packed into this cathedral. It was first built in the 1100s, and you can see the features of different architecture through time—from the Romanesque arches at the bottom of the façade to the Gothic details above. The bell tower was designed in the Renaissance by Alberti, and the inside is full of Baroque art and decoration. Even the tomb of Pope Urban III is there, which adds to the impotrance of this place. It is a bit dark inside though. I would definitely recommend visiting!

Beautiful church and basilic in the center of Ferrare ! Build in 12th century this church is dedicated to St-Georges (the saint protector of the city) This church is huge and so beautiful! Highly recommended to visit
Frédéric B — Google review
Beautiful Cathedral, dedicated to St. George. It is located in the historic center opposite the Palazzo Municipale (Town Hall). The sacredness, the majesty and the beauty of the decorations and the frescoes leaves us breathless. The cathedral of Ferrara dates from the 12th century and bears witness to the historical periods of the city. The outstanding facade, divided into three sections, was begun in Romanesque style, still visible in the lower part. The facade is rich in scenes from the New Testament above the central door, the work of the sculptor Nicholaus (1135). The upper part was built some decades later in a Gothic style and besides the numerous small arches and the splayed mullioned windows presents an extraordinary Last Judgment by an unknown sculptor over the central loggia. The imposing Renaissance campanile (Bell tower), in pink and white marble, is an unfinished work attributed to Leon Battista Alberti. The interior of the church is rich in murals, paintings and sculptures by renowned Renaissance masters such as Nicolò Baroncelli and Domenico di Paris (bronze statues of the Crucifixion and of Saints George and Maurilius), Guercino (splendid canvas of the Martyrdom of St Lawrence), Bastianino (grandiose Last Judgment). The interior of the cathedral was rebuilt in 1712 in Baroque style. During our visit it was under reconstruction, but it does not diminish the splendor of the Cathedral. It is possible to enter the Cathedral at certain times.

Nestled in the historic heart of Ferrara, Al Brindisi proudly claims its title as the oldest osteria in the world, a charming testament to centuries of Italian hospitality. Established in 1435 and originally known as Hostaria del Chiuchiolino, this cozy wine bar has welcomed patrons for generations, including notable figures like Copernicus.
A great ambience, helpful staff, lots of wine choices, affordable prices and delicious food! I really liked the local wine I had (5 euros) and the cappellacci of zucca with burro and salvia. I paid just 19 euros in total including coperto.
Kaan E — Google review
I really want to like this place, because it has a simple no fuss menu of local foods, nice interior. Obviously they get a lot of visitors for it's historic significance. The staff are a bit reserved, but polite, really no complaints. But the food is an utter disappointment. The Ragu was bad, the tortellini were passable. Polenta was, well, just a block of polenta. No meat and even the beans were far in between, two chips of carrots .. it's kinda not expensive for a restaurant, but considering all you get is basically a side dish, it is expensive.
Ingars Z — Google review
Allegedly the oldest wine bar that has been continuously operating since 1435. With seating both inside and out it is quirkily designed with various musical instruments hanging from the wall along with numerous bottles from years gone by. We went in the afternoon and there was some wild jazz playing that added to the atmosphere. The staff were friendly and very helpful in helping you select a suitable wine. A wide range was sold by the glass which as at June 25 was €5. If you are a wine lover this is a must to visit. We enjoyed it a lot.
Lorenzo — Google review
Looked interesting while waking by. Saw quite a few people enjoying drinks and some food. Decided to stop for birra, vino, and some cold cuts. Super glad we did. Great staff and service. The drinks and food were better than any that we have tried in the States. And this was just 'normal, daily' stuff in Italy!

Big hardware store in the outskirts of town, need a car to reach but good parking facility. Good selection of items, quite popular and subject to rush hour crowds during which it is hard to get service and attention form the local staff. I usually try there after my first stop in a small shop in town but before a full online search.

Went Saturday the 8th of July 2022 in Ferrara looking for some components required for a maintenance I've been carrying on. Found a clerk a kindly ask if they had them getting as answer some grumbled words I couldn't understand. I asked again making the clerk angry barking something like "I told you we don't have, how many time must I tell you? We don't have!". Even though not happy and especially negatively shocked I thanked him looking then for someone else. Found another clerk I asked her it they had those components and the answer was "we'd have something somewhere, try to find them by yourself". Perhaps I was unlucky going to that shop the day the most offered products given for free were both the rudeness and the unkindness, but I must say never ever again!

You will find everything you need. But don't simply depend on the help of the salesmen there. Very often the place is so huge that they too do not know of everything that you CAN find there. Ask like 5 different salesmen for the thing you are looking for, if one doesn't know.

This is the kind of place where if you make any criticism, they laugh and doubt you instead of just accepting your opinion. Completely unprofessional. They blame the customer in every situation, do not spend your money here, go elsewhere. A real professional restaurant would never blame the customer publicly. Sad. 1 star. Any restaurant in decline will always blame the customer. You will see by how they react to other customers in these reviews, including telling people to visit the dentist. Absolutely UNPROFESSIONAL.

(Translated by Google) As a Ferrarese, I am increasingly disappointed to find yet another place full of people who don't know how to do their job, who don't know how to behave with customers: ordered 3 wines, of the 2 with bubbles, one was out of gas. The bartender denied it... Annoyed she opened a new bottle (given the price of a glass, one expects quality wine).. I asked for some appetizers and with difficulty (saying that the kitchen wasn't there... Ok, just say it in the right way!) he literally "threw" some chips and peanuts onto the table... Chiesto qualche stuzzichino e a fatica ( dicendo che la cucina non era lì.. Ok, basta dirlo coi dovuti modi!) ci ha letteralmente "lanciato" sul tavolo delle patatine e arachidi...

(Translated by Google) Monday 22 July at approximately 8.15pm. They tell us that there is no table service. Ordered three glasses, one of which was Franciacorta (7 or 8 euros, the exact cost escapes me) but served completely out of gas at the counter.. I ask for clarification, assuming it was the bottom of some bottle but, completely annoyed, the operator shows us that the bottle is still half full (probably opened at Easter). With even worse disappointment he opens a new one to finally be able to serve me a long-awaited aperitif with bubbles.. We finally dared to ask for some chips to munch on and the same operator, angry about the request to change the decarbonized glass, literally threw them on the table... A pretty face is not always synonymous with professionalism and hospitality. 👎🏿

A small pice of bread filled with mortadella bolognese. Also, they have an interesting selection of natural wines with surprising notes. This place is great to gather with friends for an afterwork or to spend a cosy evening with family. The staff is amazingly nice and really friendly.

I visited Retrobottega Travagli in May'25 without any expectations, just because I liked its location - overlooking inner court. And it didn't disappoint. The location is nice, the staff is polite and helping, and the food was amazing. Oh! And one of the best Apperol Spritz I have tried. I would gladly visit again if I ever come back to Ferrara.

A real discovery in the courtyard of honour, next to the Comune building. Amazing food (had porchetta roll with fresh chillies) and a lovely spritz. Charming staff and great messages on the wall! Well worth a visit.

Good wine and meat for decent price. We enjoyed the dinner here and drinks.

Personnel very warming and efficient. Location is fantastic and you cant miss the small sandwiches filled with mortadella directly from the co-located butcher! The gourmet sandwiches from the menu are enjoyable as well. Bottom line, you have to grab an aperitivo here if you visit Ferrara. Dont forget, better to book the table on the phone.

(Translated by Google) Fresh from a double glass of wine with a friend, a little spot becomes available next to the entrance. I approach the wall, intending to lean on it and then sit on the stool, only to be slammed down by an employee and a guy. "I'm sorry, but I have to give this table to other guys who are also eating," I'm forced to say, not that I have any postural issues from not being able to enjoy a glass of wine standing up, but if I've consumed my wine with my friend, how can I not have the right to sit down before a customer who has yet to consume his? I'll tell you, based on the customer who apparently consumes the most. It all seemed so out of place, that's all. Italian restaurant
Makorè is an Italian restaurant in Ferrara that fuses the maritime theme with contemporary design. The kitchen is open to view, and the young chef, Giancarlo Perbellini, has won a Michelin star at his previous job under the guidance of Giancarlo Perbellini. The menu here takes you on a journey from Italy's Piedmont region to Emilia-Romagna, where Giancarli grew up.
Amazing food experience! If you are open minded do not miss this place!
Ioana C — Google review
Good experience in the center of Ferrara. The whole team is really motivated and passionate. The chef offers a elaborated cuisine, maybe too much focused on the technique instead of the taste. The service is really professional, maybe a bit too much sometimes with very long explanations. The restaurant is modern, smart and with a welcoming atmosphere. I think the Michelin star could come at some point, if they "simplify" a bit the tastes and try to stimulate more the emotions instead of showing the technique behind.
Kirlo90 — Google review
I recently visited Makorè in Ferrara with four friends, and the experience was exceptional. Our group included both Italian and English speakers, but communication was effortless—the staff spoke perfect English, which made everything smooth and welcoming. The menu offers excellent value. In addition to the selected dishes, we were treated to welcome bites and extra small tastings that highlighted the chef’s creativity. The desserts were a true highlight—so beautifully presented that we almost felt guilty eating them, yet every bite was incredible. Overall, Makorè delivers an outstanding combination of quality, service, and value. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a refined yet unique Italian dining experience in Ferrara.

One of the best Michelin stars restaurant I have ever been into. The personnel was simply amazing with all the stories about the items from the tasting menu. The taste of the food speaked for itself. Just ignore the negative comments, those people don't understand what is fine dining

One of if not the best seafood restsurant I have ever visited. Staff were professional, very friendly and very informative. The food was excellent and the wine devine. Not too pricey for a special night out. So happy.

Excellent service, sophisticated but not exuberant, very professional although friendly, elegant and cosy atmosphere. The food is a proper journey through the excellent gastronomic realities of several Italian locations, all well explained ... a journey of taste, where the quality of the ingredients and the creativity of the chefs are expressed at the highest level, with a carful attention to the needs of the clients. Strongly recommended

Day 2

Off the beaten path
For day 2, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like National Archeological Museum of Ferrara. Not quite as popular as Palazzo dei Diamanti, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 7 hours.

Il Castello Centro Commerciale is a stylish and beautiful shopping center located just outside the historic center of Ferrara. It features a wide range of national and international brands, including popular names like Zara and Geox. The mall also offers a food court with various dining options, making it convenient for shoppers to grab a quick bite. Additionally, there is a large supermarket on-site for added convenience. Families will appreciate the cozy nursery available for those visiting with young children.
I recently visited Il Castello Centro Commerciale in Ferrara and had a fantastic experience. The mall offers a great mix of shops and dining options, but the highlight for me was their amazing gelato ice cream it's a must try! The atmosphere is welcoming and spacious, and parking is super convenient. If you're in Ferrara, this is a shopping destination you shouldn't miss.

Went to this restaurant for my anniversary as my wife and I were passing through the area on vacation. The service and food were good with one exception. We were advised by the server to have a rib eye steak. We didn't get a rib eye steak but we're charged for one. Left a bad taste with us as a result.

My family and I were fortunate to meet Simona A. from Ipercoop hypermarket from Castello Centro Commerciale who was so kind and helpful in helping us to book a taxi ride back to our hotel accommodation on 30 Jun 2024, 1600 hours. Due to our inability to speak Italian, we were facing issues to book a taxi back to our hotel from the shopping mall. Hence, meeting Simona A. and being able to obtain her immense help for the taxi booking was comforting to us:) Thank you Simona A!

Conveniently locate near a major crossroads, it has most of the basic needs covered. It perhaps lacks a dedicated Electornics store while other are just redundant. Food court is reasonable in choice and rather high in quality. Various vendor stands rotate in the halls, sporting now an Amazon automatic pickup point.

Museum
Specialty Museums
The National Archeological Museum of Ferrara is a hidden gem, showcasing the treasures of the Etruscan city of Spina. Housed in the magnificent Renaissance-era Palazzo Costabili, it offers a fascinating journey into the past. The museum's collection includes vases, bronzes, jewelry, and everyday utensils from ancient workshops, providing valuable insights into Etruscan civilization. Notable highlights are the exquisite gold tiaras found among funerary goods.
The museum holds the excavated remains from an Etruscan necropolis and the trading town of Spina that was excavated between the 1920s and 1950s before being buried under fields in a land reclamation project. The town was founded in the sixth century BC and was an important port and marketplace. It became wealthy on trade and that wealth was reflected in the grave goods with lots of expensive Athenian ceramics. The town was destroyed by the Celts in around 300BC I think and then the river slowly moved, burying the town and necropolis under sediment where it remained lost until 1922. The museum had some fabulous items on display and it was all well laid out in chronological order. The ceramics were the star of the show, some of them were around a metre tall and classic Greek designs but for me the best items were the carving of a married couple - so much affection in a 2500 year old stone carving - and the strainer, a beautiful design that would grace any modern home. There were also lots of wonderful glasswork and gold earrings as well as the inscriptions on the graves to help archaeologists understand population movements and interactions. Luckily there were plenty of English inscriptions and I spent a couple of hours including a quick walk round the garden and a look at the two preserved Roman canoes. The building itself is the Palazzo Costabili, built for the Ambassador to Milan in the late fifteenth century and has some remarkable ceilings as well as a quite stupendous map room.
Marcus H — Google review
If you just want to see the artefacts excavated at Spina, this is the place for you. They are plentiful and amazing. Also a beautiful building! But if you want context and background to go with the objects, it's not so great. Also, the only place in all of Ferrara where I couldn't pay by card, so I had to go get cash, which was quite annoying as the neareat ATM is pretty far away. But if you have the MyFe card it's fine (mine ran out the day before).
Mette — Google review
Located in a wonderful palace, this museum is very old museologically. The collection amazing though. Do not miss. Just be ready to walk in a book and use google translate
Andrea P — Google review
Spectacular collection of beautiful pottery items from the ancient settlement of Spina. Building housing the collection is lovely too. A must see for archeology fans and not only!
Alexander R — Google review
This is the best archeological museum in this trip, so far (went to Venice and Bologna). Museums with this large amount of items tend to become an overwhelming warehouse or a careless highlight show without any educational intention (iykyk). But the Ferrara museum is well curated (multi media, tireless explanation, English translation, the giant "Spina book"...), takes its pace and tells an intriguing story of Spina. Plus it only coats €8. I found here again the joy from last year in Rome. The palace itself is beautiful, with a garden which I’m sure is even more stunning in spring. The staff are also friendly, helping me find moved exhibits.
Leo C — Google review
Exceptional Etruscan museum. Great size - it’s not huge but the number of artifact surprised me and the preservation was astounding. Also, it’s housed in a gorgeous palace and has very nice gardens. I’m very glad I visited.
Elaine G — Google review
Great museum. Funny organization and the videos were not working. But in this off season we had the place to ourselves to view the finds from 4,000 Etruscan tombs from Spina.
Rick P — Google review
It's okay. Free admission because we were under 25 (or maybe because we are students? Not sure). However, the collection did not seem unique to us. It's mainly vases and paintings. Don't get me wrong, they are beautiful. But after having seen quite a few museums in Italy, this one did not seem to offer anything new to our experience. There were barely any other visitors, despite it being August.

The Museo Nazionale dell'Ebraismo Italiano e della Shoah, affectionately known as MEIS, is a captivating destination that delves into the rich tapestry of the Jewish community's history in the city.
Amazing museum! It's not only about telling a "story", but also it educates and raises awareness.
Simona I — Google review
I didn't take any photos as it seemed somewhat insensitive. The museum gives an interesting glimpse into Italian Judaism over the centuries. It's main focus in my opinion seems to relate to the interaction of the Jewish community on foreign soil, with the ever changing political landscape. There are two main buildings with exhibitions and multimedia displays. As someone with little knowledge of Jewish life (other than from the 20th century) it was quite informative and interesting. Obviously the most moving and relatable elements are those that happened from 1938 onwards. And this is well represented in a black and white short documentary following the lives of two fictitious families from WW1 . A fact I was not aware of was the support by Italian Jews during Mussolini's walk to Rome in 1922. Maybe this should be reflected upon in today's political climate. Sadly the overall message of us all 'living in harmony' seems a lost hope in 2025. Whatever your beliefs or faith this museum provides on interest perspective on a particular slice if history.
Larry D — Google review
Beautiful museum, showcasing a rich history of struggle, loss persecution and destruction but with a focus on hope and unity.
Stephanie P — Google review
Fascinating history of the Jews and Italy. Beautifully laid out with a fun Kosher garden maze. I put 3 not 5 stars simply because it is such a specific museum and so may not appeal to everyone. Though I think you'd be missing a trick not to visit this fascinating museum.
Jacqueline D — Google review
I’ve been to quite a few museums of this type, and thought this was one of the best ones I have seen. The exhibition about the first millennium of Jewish life in Italy is well-presented (in English and in Italian) with a careful choice of objects that are well-explained. There are some more detailed “interview” videos scattered throughout with experts (rabbis, professors, archaeologists) giving insights and nuance. The artist’s section is beautiful and very moving without being schmaltzy or naive. The 30-minute video linking Jewish life in medieval Italy to the present day was excellent, with a great choice of images and a really clear story to follow. It managed to convey a lot in a short time and differentiated between political and religious bases for anti-Semitism (something I hadn’t known about).
Dani Q — Google review
Learned a fair amount, but found the exhibits a bit skimpy for the price (by Italy standards). Situated in a somewhat featureless neighborhood.

Historic Walking Areas
The Mura di Ferrara, also known as the Walls of Ferrara, is a 9-kilometer stretch of 16th-century city walls that encircle the historic center. These medieval defensive structures feature earthworks, moats, city gates, bastions, and towers. Starting from Castello Estense, visitors can explore this impressive site on foot or by bike.
Pleasant walk along historic walls around the old town. Big trees along the path on top create a nice shaded area for the summer period.
M ( — Google review
We did our walk round the city walls in two parts. The first, late evening, we did approximately one quarter (which I didnt document). The second, the following morning we completed the rest. We set off at about 6:45 as the weather was extremely hot. We set off from San Giovanni, and concluded at the railway station at about 9:00 am. So a relatively relaxed pace. The first things to note are: It would appear, ou can take 1 of 2 routes. One on the outside of the walls, and on the walls itself. There are breaks in the walls somewhere they nonlonger exist and others under reconstruction. Some parts are fenced off for safety reasons. Where these breaks occur the tourist map is not overly helpful. The two main locations we had difficulty pick up the path were at Bagniducali, and the section near the Aquaadtto. I also imagine that picking up The route the other side of the train station could be difficult but we had arrived at that location the night before. The route we took was mostly tree lined. Giving some much appreciated shade for the walk. Unlike some city walls we have walked i.e. Lucca the view of the town is very modern and lacks a certain charm. However the walk itself is very pleasant. If you are in Ferrara for a few days then this is a welcome change from the usual churches and museums. Concluding at the station was good as there is a really nice cafe/bar located in a small park to grab a much needed cappuccino.
Larry D — Google review
Worth doing. Clocks in at exactly 10k. Most of the way there are two or more paths, so you can usually stay in the shade. Many locals jogging and cycling some stretches (North and East). It's not always possible to walk right on top of the wall. It disappears completely at one short stretch (somewhere between Porta Paola and Giardino) but it's all part of the fun.

They explained to us that the "regular" chicken was out and that it had to be replaced with the paprika version. Very good. Finally, the cashier specified, "Obviously, with an additional charge to be paid by you." When I objected (I hadn't requested an upgrade), I was told there was nothing she could do. I'll eat somewhere else. Absurd. Never again. Assurdi. Mai più.

(Translated by Google) I know the place because we have gone there other times in other parts of the country as it is a chain, today we decide to take away and have lunch at home, never a wrong choice again. Kamut piadina with raw ham and fontina inedible, something like this has never happened, piadina made with apparent scraps of ham, obviously I removed all the ham because it was inedible and ate the piadina with only the fontina. If you go eat there at least you have the option of bringing it back, because if you get takeaway they don't take care of the order.

Whatever you’re in small towns, you always say I’d love to find a local restaurant off the beaten track where everybody is Italian that eats there and this is what this restaurant was !!enjoyed it very much. The waitress was excellent. She spoke English perfectly, which I was relieved and happy to be able to ask questions. ? the food was delicious. The beginning they gave you something vegetarian with the Parmesan cream on top, which was very delicious that was complementary I had Seabass cook just the way I like it came with some vegetables we had a side salad, which was delicious also the pasta of the day and then we finish it off with a traditional Chocolate cake and ice cream that the waitress said was something that they only make here i’! that was like chocolate melting in your mouth. It was delicious. And then they brought out a little plate of cookies complementary which I had to Try they were also very good if you’re in the city and you want to try something off the beaten path, that’s worth going off the beaten path, I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Fantastic dinner in Ferrara. Actually a highlight of our trip. The service and atmosphere were fantastic from the moment we walked in to the moment we left. First we ordered only antipasti and pasta, but those were so outstanding we decided to order secondi as well. The whole staff made us feel welcome and almost at home. Grazie mille for the great dinner!

I do not understand the raving reviews some people have posted. The service is very friendly and polite but the food is far from excellent. Standard local dishes but not worthy of such praise and there is a bit of pretentiousness in the menu that does not merit acclaim: avocado mayonnaise with fried mini veal cutlets is closer to chicken McNuggets than anything more exotic. Sorry. The pumpkin tortellini were below average and salty (like everything else I ate here ).

Day 3

Northeast side of town
For day 3, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Palazzo dei Diamanti, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to House of Ludovico Ariosto. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Palazzo dei Diamanti is a Renaissance palace in Ferrara, Italy, known for its diamond-shaped marble facade. It houses the renowned National Picture Gallery and is considered an architectural jewel of downtown. The historic center of the city is like an open-air museum with medieval and Renaissance buildings such as the sumptuous Estense Castle and Palazzo Schifanoia.
One of the two must see places in Ferrara ( besides palazzo Schifanoia) belonged to the ducal family. Great not only from the outside but also from the inside. The ornate rooms in my pictures are from the first floor.

I went to see the Mucha exhibition which was an amazing experience. The exhibition was big, divided into thematic sections about different topics and life stages of the artist. In the ticket, a very informative audio guided was included. Overall this exhibition was not overwhelming and also not empty - it had just the right amount of selected pieces, topics and presentations to stay engaged. I ended up spending around 3 hours here.

Very nice building close to the center of Ferrara, booked an online early (5.30am) visit of the Banksy exhibition "An Artist known as Banksy".The museum in the last days of the show was open 24/24. The National Gallery of Art, located in the Palazzo dei Diamanti, is a treasure trove of art from the 14th to 18th centuries. It showcases the brilliance of Ferrarese artists such as Tura, Del Cossa, and Roberti. The gallery also features contemporary art in the Galleria di arte Moderna.

A comprehensive,never-boring collection of paintings by artists hired by the Este family and their court when leading the city in the Renaissance era,and after that:Garofalo,Gentile da Fabriano and original Cosmé Tura are well represented, though you will surprisingly find El Greco too! You will easily spend an hour and a half touring this pinacoteca. Absolutely worth your time!!
Alberto A — Google review
an overwhelming avalanche of gorgeous art representing the formidable painters of the Ferrara schools over the centuries, as well as some sculpture and decorative arts. The real stars here of course are the paintings by Dossi, Garofalo, Erocle de Roberti, Scarsellino, Bononi, Bastianino, the list goes on and on. Truly impressive for such a large gallery to be found in a city as modesty-sized as Ferrara. The newly restored Palazzo dei Diamanti is wonderfully done—the exhibition on Lorenzo Costa and de Roberti is a home run, and the caffè is also worth visiting for a break and some refreshments.
Nathan E — Google review
Wonderful architectural gem (from the outside) with a somewhat disappointing exhibition on the inside (with some rooms closed). Nonetheless, the permanent collection contains masterpieces by such masters as Gentile da Fabriano, Cosme Tura, Mantegna, Garofalo and Guercino.

The House of Ludovico Ariosto is a well-preserved residence that once belonged to the renowned Italian poet. The house features relics, educational exhibits, and original furnishings from the time when Ludovico Ariosto lived there. Located in Ferrara, Italy, this small but significant house holds historical value as it was where the illustrious poet and playwright spent his final years working on the third edition of Orlando Furioso.
Small museum giving a good impression of a house of the early 16th century. Use translator for Italian sign.

A moving visit to the modest house where the great poet spent the later happier years of his life. Indeed memorabilia are few, but the house itself is very interesting, right from the famous Latin inscription on the façade "Parva sed apta mihi.." (small but fitting for me.. "). Also a trove of information in the panels, and the history of how the poet was rediscovered, starting from 1875, as a glory of the newly reunited Italy. Free entrance.

(Translated by Google) The house has a simple but elegant facade in exposed brick, on which there is a Latin inscription, the translation of which is as follows: "The house is small but suitable for me, clean, not burdened by fees and purchased only with my money". Here Ludovico Ariosto spent the last years of his life, dedicating himself to the third and definitive edition of Orlando Furioso, published in 1532. On the first floor of the building, there is a small museum dedicated to the great poet, which houses the bronze cast of his inkwell, some editions of his works and many medals representing him. In some of the visitors' registers, the signatures of King Vittorio Emanuele III, Giuseppe Verdi, Alberto Moravia, Elsa Morante and Giorgio Bassani are highlighted. In the small central corridor, a display case houses the precious edition of Orlando Furioso illustrated by Gustave Doré, from 1881. At the back of the house is a garden created during the poet's time, now used for concerts and temporary initiatives.

Manifattura Alimentare is a gastronomy shop that offers an exceptional culinary experience. The venue is beautiful and the counter is filled with delicious dishes that can be enjoyed on-site or taken home. The fresh pastas are bursting with flavor, especially the cappelletti cacio e pepe. It's more than just a restaurant; it's an informal place where you can savor the creations of one of the best Italian chefs.
We had some fabulous service and advice here and Deb was bowled over by the choices and enthusiasm of the proprietors. It was so nice to get food cooked by people that care. Delicious meal and paired with some wonderful wine choices. We then followed up with a meringue and a coconut cheesecake. A very enjoyable experience and a great welcome to the city of Ferrara.

Once there was a high class restaurant with 6 tables and a view into the kitchen in Ferrara called „Don Giovanni“. Its chef was no-one else then the mastermind of the Manifattura Alimentrae: Pier Luigi Di Diego This place will offer you two opportunities: either you take the marvelous food with you or you surrender to Pier Luigi and his wife and enjoy it with a perfect wine pairing at one of the view tables. You will enjoy vegetables from their own garden which are combined with what is available on a seasonal basis from land and sea. And everything is brought to a level you tend to find only in stared restaurants but in a relaxed manner without the showing off. So help yourself with some Quinoa with fresh vegetables, red rice with shrimps, sardines ln the flower of zucchini, octopus salat, fresh made paste with Polpette or mussels, in salt water cooled pork meat with tonnato sauce, or other plates inspired by the regions of Italy and i influenced by the seasons. Make sure you reserve your table upfront.

The atmosphere is informal, yet meticulously crafted, without the rigidity of a traditional restaurant. The staff was helpful, explaining the daily specials simply. Everything we had was excellent and the Vitelli tonnato was the best ever, ( and we have tried a few).Such a great service, professional and genuine, giving the extra personal touch for a full experience. Very good value for money.

The staff is super nice and friendly. They explained the menu for all the vegetarian options. The portions, however, seemed a bit small for the price since you would probably be full if you end up having a pasta, a main course, and a desert with coffee, which would make up for a 60€+ dinner in which case, it would make more sense to book a Michelin guide spot in the city (which is the only reason why I didn't give 5 stars).

Piazza Ariostea is a charming square in Ferrara, Italy, featuring a walking track, lawns, and a monument dedicated to poet Ludovico Ariosto. The square hosts various events throughout the year, such as the Palio di San Giorgio - the oldest in the world - where participants in Renaissance costumes parade and compete in games between eight contrade. Another highlight is the Ferrara Buskers Festival at the end of August, which fills the streets with music and color.
Beloved amazing historical place, dedicated to the poet and writer Ludovico Ariosto (author of Orlando Furioso), used as a set in many films of the Italian tradition. A must visit in spring and summer, when the ice-cream shops and bars are open all around the square. Noteworthy: very close to many historical places and museums, such as Parco Massari, Palazzo dei Diamanti, Spazio Antonioni, Certosa Monumentale and the botanical gardens.

A historic and festive place for the people of Ferrara: it hosts the racecourse, the European market and other activities. Especially around this time, it's not unusual to find someone spreading out a cloth to read, have a picnic, or play with the kids. Truly a welcoming and functional square.

Awesome. Come for the annual Palio of Ferrara! Donkey races in the square for Covic pride!!

THE BEST DAY OF THE YEAR TO VISIT THE PIAZZA IS PALIO DAY. FOUR MANIC RACES, 2 FOOT RACES (BOYS,GIRLS), A HORSE RACE, AND THE HILARIOUS RACE OF THE DONKEYS. THE LOCALS ALL WEAR THE COLOURS OF THEIR CITY SECTOR MAKING THE DAY A BRIGHT AND EVENTFUL DAY. THE LOCALS ARE VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS DAY AND OFTEN SET OFF SMOKE FLARES. SUCH FUN!
CHOCCY B — Google review
Interesting layout like as Circus Maximus makes me wonder if they ever make any races around the track, with some Cafes and ice cream shops

The Cathedrals Museum, housed in the former Church of San Romano, is a part of the Civic Museums of Ancient Art. It features a collection of historical art from the cathedral, including sculptures, paintings, tapestries, illuminated antiphonaries, and reliquaries. Notable pieces include ancient organ doors depicting the Annunciation and St.

San Francesco is a historic church located on the route to Casa Romei. It was renovated in a Renaissance style by Rossetti during the Erculean addition, but suffered damage during the Ferrara earthquake of 2012 and is currently undergoing restoration. Despite this, visitors can still explore its artwork. This basilica, dating back to 1200 AD, holds great significance as a heritage site for the Catholic Church.
Beautiful Old city church. Unfortunately WWII damages made it rebuilt in a way that many old decorations and frescos could not be restored

(Translated by Google) Architectural Style of the Basilica of St. Francis in Ferrara 🔧 1. History and Context • The Oracle began as a small Franciscan church from the 13th century, which leaves traces visible in the interior (e.g., sunken arches). • The current structure was built between 1494 and 1508 according to the design of Biagio Rossetti, the initiator of the famous Addizione Erculea—Ferrara's Renaissance urban plan. ⸻ 🎨 2. Facade and Structure—Geometric Renaissance • Made of brick with marble and plaster pilasters (lesena), inspired by the style of Leonardo Baptista Alberti, giving it the harmony and proportions typical of the Italian Renaissance. ⸻ 🎨 2. Facade and Structure—Geometric Renaissance • The façade is two-story, with a large central portal and two side portals topped with triangular pediments, and the upper story features a large rose window framed by volutes and a pediment . ⸻ 🕍 3. Interior Layout and Plan • Basilica plan: Latin cross, with three naves and eight chapels on the sides; semicircular chancel . • The side naves and nave are covered with domed vaults (so-called sail vaults), and above the nave, the bays support vaults on pendentives—the entire structure is bright and spacious thanks to tall, narrow windows and rose windows . ⸻ 💡 4. The Play of Light and Space • Rossetti designed the building with natural light in mind—the side chapels have narrow windows that let in streams of light, while the naves are illuminated by rosettes, lending the interior an atmosphere of harmony and peace. ⸻ 🖼️ 5. Decor and Selected Works of Art • In the first chapel on the left—the famous fresco "The Taking of Christ" (La cattura di Cristo) by Garofalo (1524) and the stone figure of "Christ in Gethsemane" . • In the chancel—a triptych by Domenico Mona (1580–1583) depicting the Deposition, Resurrection, and Ascension . • In the right transept – a monumental Baroque funerary monument of Marquis Ghiron Francesco Villa (†1670), the only one of its kind in Ferrara. . • Additionally: a 5th-century Roman sarcophagus, a terracotta scene of Christ at the column, and other works of local art, including graffiti, epitaphs, and lapidaries. . (Original) Styl architektoniczny Bazyliki św. Franciszka w Ferrarze 🔧 1. ⸻ 🕍 3. Układ wnętrza i plan • Plan bazyliki: krzyż łaciński, z trzema nawami i ósemką kaplic po bokach; prezbiterium zamknięte półkolisty . • Nawy boczne i korpus nakryte są sklepieniami kopułastymi (tzw. żaglaste), a nad nawą główną przęsła wspierają sklepienia na pendentywach — całość jest jasna i przestrzenna dzięki wysokim, wąskim oknom i rozetom . ⸻ 💡 4. Gra światła i przestrzeni • Rossetti zaprojektował budowlę z myślą o naturalnym świetle — boczne kaplice mają wąskie okna wpuszczające strumienie światła, natomiast nawy są rozświetlone rozetami, co nadaje wnętrzu atmosferę harmonii i spokoju . ⸻ 🖼️ 5. Wystrój i wybrane dzieła sztuki • W pierwszej kaplicy po lewej — słynny fresk „Pojmanie Chrystusa” (La cattura di Cristo) autorstwa Garofalo (1524) oraz kamienna figura „Chrystusa w Getsemani” . • W prezbiterium — tryptyk Domenico Mona (1580–1583) przedstawiający Złożenie, Zmartwychwstanie i Wniebowstąpienie .

Restaurant
Cusina e Butega is a bright and modern restaurant in the heart of Ferrara, offering a wide range of Emilia-Romagna's culinary delights. The menu features an extensive selection of regional specialties, including cappellacci di zucca al ragu, a must-try dish consisting of pumpkin-filled pasta served with Bolognese sauce.
When you visit Cusina e Butega in the heart of Ferrara, don’t miss the chance to try their exquisite Filetto di branzino in crosta di mandorle con verdure di stagione. This dish is a perfect blend of Mediterranean freshness and the refined craftsmanship of Italian cuisine. The branzino is expertly prepared, its tender fillet encased in a crisp almond crust. Each bite offers a delightful contrast of textures—crunchy on the outside, moist and delicate on the inside. Paired with a colorful assortment of seasonal vegetables, the dish is both visually appealing and naturally flavorful, adding a refreshing balance to the plate.

We came to try traditional dishes, and this restaurant was recommended by our host. Two of us shared four dishes. We ate well, in that we were able to sample the local specialty, and portion size was big. I enjoyed salamina da sugo, as it was the first time I tasted it. Other dishes we tried were fried fiori di zucca, cappellacci di zucca, and pollo arrosto. They were all ok - I do not foresee myself returning to order the same dishes. We didn't think the service was the best. Although we booked a table four days in advance, we were initially given the most uncomfortable table in the middle of the hall and the table wasn't even ready for us. The more annoying part was that there was a nicer table by the wall, next to our assigned table, and it was already set up for 2 people. We asked for that table instead. We had a small suitcase and a backpack. The staff initially refused to give us that table as it was 'reserved for someone else'. We insisted hard, and they agreed to give us that table, which we appreciated. A few minutes later an Italian couple, who must have reserved the table now assigned to us, arrived and was given the table in the middle of the hall. They did not seem to be too upset, fortunately. I wonder if the couple had asked for that specific table which we took... During our meal, the waiter was nice to give us additional plates to share the dishes between us, however, we were so rushed. At one point I was still scooping the last bit of the sauce from a plate when he hurriedly removed the plate. It was rather embarrassing... Clearly the waiter wanted us to leave asap so that he can close the lunch service for the day. There were still some 10 or so groups dining, we were not the last. I wish if I had made a better effort to learn Italian language, which should have helped us manoeuvre better.

Excellent place not to be missed. Not cheap depending on what you eat (was not clear with salumi and formaggi charging nearly 40 EUR for a plate - see photo) but I would definitely go back again. All food was prepared with attention and all the salumi were freshly cut.

Cucina Bacilieri is a small restaurant located in the center of Ferrara, offering an intimate and refined atmosphere with only ten tables. Chef Michele Bacilieri leads the kitchen, presenting a menu that combines traditional Emilian and Ferrarese cuisine with modern twists. The dishes are made using seasonal ingredients, featuring options like eel cappelletti in onion broth and spaghetti with amberjack tartare. Guests can also enjoy starters such as prawns with yellow tomato gazpacho.
It is a gem. I would go to Ferrara again just to visit this restaurant one more time. We had an outstanding dinner experience. We went for a tasting menu with a focus on seafood and fish with wine pairing. Everything was absolutely fantastic. My favourite dish was risotto with black squid ink. Wine pairing worked very well. Especially, we liked how yuzu sake matched the “meat and fish” course. In the end we took pictures of 3 wines that we liked so much that we want to find them to buy. The service was excellent as well. The people were super friendly and attentive, we felt being welcomed.

2 meals in 2 days! It was so delicious and such lovely service. I proclaim that it was the best pasta I have ever had! And I have traveled extensively in Italy. Don't miss the opportunity to dine here. I ordered the cappellacci pasta (stuffed big "hat") with a mixed meat (rabbit/pork/chicken). The pasta was stuffed with pumpkin. Don't miss this local dish! I also had the pigeon with fois gras! OMG. Also, the pricing was reasonable.

Amazing place a hidden gem in Ferrara, Emilia-Romana behind an old simple buildings walls. If you are on vacation around Bologna and you are a foodie, pls do not miss this place. Its even worth just to drive to Ferrara for lunch or dinner however the small city also cute. We had the degustation menu for lunch 65eur that had 7courses that is rather 10 as you get also some small bites. I also had the wine pairing with it for 30eur ( 3 wine).I am a huge foodie and I only can say everything was perfect from start to end including food, service and wine. Even the wine glasses were fantastic experience to drink from them. The guys went above and beyond to make you feel home. If you choose to go there it is easier to book for lunch as you have better chance to get a spot. Otherwise recommended 2 weeks in advance at least. If i will go back to the region I will certainly return for this experience.

Very good restaurant, they do evrithing as you would expect, nothing worng, but the filling I had was that somone was over thinking about the concept od the dish and hey would look like and neglected the flavor. It was 90/100, not 95-100/100.

Great experience for all senses. Food is delicious and wines are served compatible. Service is on Michelin level.

Their dishes looked good in pictures. It was a complete let down in reality. The only thing that tasted good was the eel appetizer. Baccala main was horribly overcooked with tasteless sauce. I could not eat but a small portion of it - very rare behavior for me. My wife’s appetizer and main were in the latter category as well. For the most expensive restaurant on our 5 day trip to Ferrara it was unacceptable. The wine that was recommended to us by the “sommelier” was one of the worst we’ve ever had. It’s such a shame, for Emilia–Romagna has wonderful wines. Service was virtually non-existent.

The burger was good enough. It took 45 minutes to be served even though there were only 5 people in the restaurant. After waiting an hour for the oven baked fries, the table that came after us got served first and the fries were extremely oily. There are no toilets, and after paying we were sent back to our table to clear it up ourselves as there is no service at the table. I expected more from reading the reviews. Won't recommend it to a friend. Service is definitely not the best.

For dinner we went to a local pizza restaurant and had a superb pizza which was €11 for the two of us. So about half the price of a single delivered pizza in the UK.
