Viterbo in 5 days

If you only have 5 days to spend in Viterbo, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Viterbo offers one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval historic centers, with stone palaces, narrow lanes, and the impressive Papal Palace that once hosted 13th-century conclaves. The city is famous for its thermal springs and spa culture, drawing visitors to its historic baths. Inside its walls you’ll find Romanesque churches, quiet piazzas, and local trattorias serving traditional dishes from northern Lazio. Viterbo also works well as a base for exploring nearby Etruscan sites, volcanic lakes, and hill towns in the surrounding countryside.
With favorites like Il Borgo di Bagnaia, Macchina di Santa Rosa, and Palazzo dei Priori, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Il Borgo di Bagnaia and Buongusto Piadineria artigianale e Stuzzicheria so you can get the best taste of Viterbo while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Sacro Bosco, also known as the Park of the Monsters, is a unique and surreal park located in Bomarzo, Italy. Commissioned in the 16th century by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini as a way to cope with personal grief and wartime brutality, this park features grotesque rock carvings, stone statues, follies, and temples. It is often referred to as a hidden gem of Italy due to its unusual sculptures that date back centuries.
Great place for a nice walk/hike in a weird historical park. Great for children too. Free entry for children under 4. Not touristy which is a plus!

We really enjoyed our visit. Amazing sculpture work. To see the handmade works and chisel marks. The restaurant was nice, we got the steak. Very nice and very reasonable prices. There is also a cafe. Definitely worth a visit.
Trevor M — Google review
Absolutely loved every inch of this place, and well worth the admission price. A wonderful place to bring kids, and the restaurant served us the most beautiful Fillet Steak we have had in a long time. Definitely worth a trip.

Absolutely incredible! We ditched seeing Vatican City after a long road trip across Italy, found the poster on the side of the highway and decided to drop in. Tons of parking including with a camper, kind staff, clean ground incl washroom. Soo soo soo many unique neat sculptures. There's some wheelchair ramps to washrooms but not to the sites that we could find.
Terra S — Google review
I really liked this exhibition, the statues were huge and mesmerizing! The tilted building was also fun! The price (13€) was a bit overpriced for the size of the park, but still I would recommend it!
Dimitris ( — Google review
Such a magical place. Its surrealist stone sculpture garden. We were there in Jan but would have been great to be in warmer weather since its located in hilly landscape with streams and grass area. We spent about 1 hr walk around. Its easy terrain for slow walk but different elevation makes the park interesting. Love the face entryway, elephant sculpture and leaning building. Will definitely watch the movie where the entire movie scene was shoot in this park.
Myungjin K — Google review
My husband and I brought our 4 kids on a Sunday. It was great, really beautiful and interesting, and there is a picnic area as well as a playground, both are excellent features, however, it is a small park and costs a family of 6 (with 4 children aged 13 and younger) 58 euros. There is no family rate. Furthermore, according to the website this will increase in January 2026. Would I recommend, yes. Do I think it was overpriced, yes, if you just walk through and dont spend time there. However, if you spend the entire day there it seems a better price :) also no refunds for bad weather.
Tashia D — Google review
Small restored quirky garden of bizarre statues commissioned by a middle ages count who was a little off his rocker. Worth a side trip but a little costly.

Nestled in the charming hamlet of Bagnaia, Villa Lante is a stunning example of 16th-century Italian Mannerist architecture and garden design. This exquisite complex features meticulously manicured lawns, elegant hedges, and an array of enchanting fountains that create a serene atmosphere. The centerpiece is a magnificent statue crafted by Giambologna, adding to the artistic allure of the gardens.
Villa Lante, Viterbo – A Hidden Gem of Italian Garden Design Villa Lante in Bagnaia (near Viterbo) is an absolute must-visit for lovers of Renaissance architecture, stunning gardens, and intricate water features. This 16th-century villa, designed by the legendary architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, is a masterpiece of Italian Mannerist garden design. The real highlight here is the breathtaking garden rooms, each with its own unique design and layout, perfectly integrated with the natural landscape. The water features are truly spectacular—flowing fountains, cascades, and carefully designed waterworks create a sense of harmony and elegance. The Fountain of the Moors and the famous water chain that runs down the terraces are particularly mesmerizing. While the villa itself is smaller than some grand palaces, the two symmetrical casini (small lodges) add to its charm, adorned with beautiful frescoes and offering panoramic views of the gardens. The entire site feels peaceful and enchanting, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. Opening Hours & Ticket Prices (as of 2025): • Opening Times: Usually open Tuesday–Sunday, from 8:30 AM – 7:30 PM (last entry at 6:45 PM). Closed on Mondays. • Entry Fee: Around €8 per person, with discounts for students and seniors. Tips for Visitors: • Visit early in the morning to enjoy the tranquility before larger crowds arrive. • The gardens are best explored at a slow pace—bring comfortable shoes! • If you’re a photography enthusiast, the play of light and water in the gardens provides fantastic opportunities for pictures. Villa Lante is an underrated jewel of central Italy, perfect for a relaxing day trip from Rome or Florence. A true paradise for history and garden lovers alike! Highly recommended.

The garden is on constructions.. It's not that clean and organized that we were expected it to be.. You have a really big potential to be an amazing place that's for now it's not like that.. We waited about half an hour to get in it because it was really windy day and they decided to open it on time.
Rachel R — Google review
It is still being renovated and only one fountain is working but the expected time of completion is May 2026 so, for now, the tickets have been reduced to 5 euro
Roberta D — Google review
Has real potential but the majority is closed for renovation which is why the ticket is reduced to 5 euros. The contractors have fenced off the majority of the garden so our visit was short. I would suggest managing expectations vs the historic photos you see. You may want to wait until the work is completed before visiting. Once the work is done I’m sure it will be fantastic
Paul T — Google review
Historic place to visit and learn about Architecture and Italian architect Vignola who designed the Villa
Julio H — Google review
Such a romantic garden! Admire how the fountains were arranged and manipulated to creat a beautiful landscape. The garden is not massive so it gives a very intimate and quiet atmosphere. Definitely recommend a visit in late afternoon to take advantage of the softened sunlight.
Peach I — Google review
Even one star is too much. Almost everything here is closed off, but they still charge you 5€ for admission. We asked at the entrance if what was left to see was wheelchair accessible. They said that the gardens were and the buildings ground floor. A bad joke. You can't even get into the two remaining open rooms or the last open plateau in the garden, with the last water fountain. We were really looking forward to the villa, since very little in Italy is wheelchair accessible anyway. I’m just sad and disappointed.
Kris — Google review
During my recent trip to the charming town of Viterbo, I had the pleasure of exploring the renowned Renaissance garden of Villa Lante in Bagnaia. Covering an area of approximately four hectares, the garden is spread across three main terraces and is considered one of the most famous Renaissance gardens in the world. The garden's most notable feature is its unique "prospect garden" design, which creates an illusion of depth and perspective through the strategic use of fountains, water features, and architectural elements. Walking through the garden, I couldn't help but be struck by the stunning beauty of the meticulously manicured hedges, colorful flower beds, and intricate stonework. As I made my way through the garden's winding paths and hidden corners, I discovered a variety of fascinating features and surprises, including hidden grottos, whimsical sculptures, and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. It was easy to see why Villa Lante is one of the most visited attractions in Tuscia, with approximately 85,000 visitors per year. Overall, my visit to Villa Lante was a truly unforgettable experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Viterbo. Whether you are an art lover, a history buff, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, the garden's stunning design, intricate details, and serene ambiance are sure to leave you spellbound.

Historic Walking Areas
Ferento, an ancient Roman city located in the Tuscan countryside, offers a peaceful and contemplative experience amidst impressive Roman ruins. The well-preserved theater and the foundations of Roman baths are among the notable remnants of this once wealthy city. Unlike the bustling ruins in Rome, Ferento is often quiet, allowing visitors to wander around at their own pace. Managed by volunteers from the Tuscia Archeology group, the site provides informative captions and a deep explanation of its excavation and history.
We arrived just after 1PM and the site was locked up so we walked up and down the road and decided it was impressive enough to wait until it opened at 2. Deb had a snooze while I caught up on emails and then we went to the entrance just after 2. The site is run by volunteers from the Tuscia Archeology group and the lady that was there was fantastic. She explained about the site and how they had excavated different areas and the sheer size of it before telling us about the history and eventual destruction of the city. It really bought it to life and such passion was lovely to see. The whole time we were there we were the only visitors which is rather tragic for such a well preserved site. It could certainly do with having a higher profile as we only knew of it due to me browsing Google maps. The theatre is still in use for summer concerts and was designed to seat 3000 people. The bath complex has also been excavated but the rest of the city is on private land so is still buried.

Outstanding service by the person in charge, that gave us a deep explanation about the excavation and the history of this unfortunate city finally destroyed in the Middle Age by Viterbo’s rulers. Nice walk around the ruins, lovely landscape and surroundings, highly recommended.

Great place. Very interesting lots of information. It suggests it opens at 14.00 but people were working there and said we could look around.
Andrew W — Google review
I love this peaceful place out in the Tuscan countryside. Some very impressive Roman ruins that you can wander around and contemplate the historic past. Never very busy, we've been several times and often had the place to ourselves. There are informative captions, no tour guides and no entry fee just a man/woman in a hut who may or may not ask you for a donation. Such a contrast to the ruins in Rome. Watch out for humming bird moths in the vetch plants at the back of the site by the Roman road. Also watch out for the rangy wild cats that like to play with and devour the huge locusts that also frequent the site.
Derek S — Google review
Incredible ruins that are still under active excavation. No wait times and very few other people. Entry price is by donation and is very worth the drive!!

A very tranquil place. Spent a great couple of hours wandering around the ancient ruins and exploring.

Absolutely magical! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sant'Angelo, the fairy tale village (Sant'Angelo di Roccalvecce), is a hidden gem that stepping into feels like walking straight into a storybook. The map guided us flawlessly through the charming, narrow streets, each turn revealing another breathtaking mural of beloved fairy tales. From Alice in Wonderland to Puss in Boots and Don Quixote, the artwork is not only stunningly beautiful but has also breathed new life into this historic village, transforming it into an open-air museum. It's the perfect destination for families, art lovers, or anyone seeking a truly unique and whimsical experience. The village itself is perched in a picturesque part of Italy, offering lovely views and a tranquil atmosphere far from the hustle and bustle. We easily spent hours wandering, taking photos, and simply soaking in the magical ambiance. The initiative to revitalize the village through art is inspiring, and the result is a place that sparks joy and wonder in visitors of all ages. Don't miss the chance to discover this enchanting corner of the world – it's an unforgettable experience!

Arrived in Bagnaia without any plans for lunch before going to Villa Lante and tried this restaurant. Couldnt have found a better place if I had researched it beforehand. The staff is extremely friendly and open (not every place is when you travel solo), the space is well appointed (and huge) and the food exceptional. Excellent value for the money. Highly recommended

Our lunch was amazing especially the linguini and clam. The best I have ever had. The sauce was light but full of flavor. We also had the mussels and clams which also were very good. The wine and espresso were also excellent.

There was a nice looking restaurant, Il Borgo, on the town square so we sat down and Deb perused the menu, trying to translate the Italian. I'm not sure how successful she was - I had pumpkin ravioli which was superb. I think she was expecting fish soup but a bowl arrived festooned with crabs claws and a whole family of baby octopoii floating in the sauce. I didn't actually look until I'd finished mine as I'd probably have chucked but Deb is made of sterner stuff and ate the lot! Service was excellent, the food was beautifully presented and prices were good.

The Palazzo dei Papi di Viterbo, also known as the Papal Palace, is a stunning example of Gothic architecture in the Lazio region. Built between 1255 and 1266 to house popes seeking refuge in Viterbo, it features decorative stonework and frescoes that showcase its historical significance. The palace's elegant seven-arched loggia and a charming courtyard with city views make it a must-see attraction.

The Palazzo dei Papi is one of Viterbo’s most important monuments, built when Pope Alexander IV (1254-1261) moved the papal curia to Viterbo in 1257 and had the former bishop’s palace expanded. The palace includes the famous Aula del Conclave, which hosted the longest papal election in history, lasting about 33 months! You and get a ticket, and audio guide, for a very reasonable €10 which gives you access to the museum, cathedral and Palazzo. The audio tour is very detailed and a map is provided which shows the main points of the locations.

The Papal Palace in Viterbo hosts an exhibition that captures the first conclave (literally "under lock and key") that was held starting in 1268AD and took nearly three years to select the new Pope. That was Gregory X, who then ordered that the conclave method be used for future selection. It's very well done, including multilanguage commentary, VR, and animation to tell the story, and a must visit for History buffs and for Catholics interested in key stages in the development of the church.

The cathedral of San Lorenzo is located in the center of Viterbo, and it is considered to be one of the most important religious buildings in Italy. The original construction was completed in the 12th century, but it has been extensively rebuilt over time. The current structure features a black-and-white bell tower that is one of the most recognizable features of Viterbo.
A beautiful reminder of a period where Viterbo was the chosen seat and sanctuary of popes. It was peaceful and not at all busy when I visited so it was perfect for me. A single ticket allows you to visit the cathedral, the papal palace and the cathedral museum next door. There are also tourist audio guides which are great and allow you to listen to the commentary at your own pace.
Planettall — Google review
The cathedral is very plain apart from a couple of the side chapels, as when it was restored after the second world War it primarily followed its medieval precedent, rather than its subsequent baroque developments, Definitely not the most beautiful church in Viterbo, if you're short on time or money.
B — Google review
A Majestic Symbol of Viterbo’s Soul The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is a place that truly leaves a mark. Perched on the highest point of Viterbo’s historic centre, this striking Romanesque cathedral, with its elegant Renaissance façade and soaring bell tower, is a masterpiece of solemnity and grace. By day, the cathedral’s understated beauty blends perfectly with the timeless charm of Piazza San Lorenzo. But by night — as seen in this photo — it becomes something truly special: illuminated with soft golden lights, casting long shadows across the square, exuding a quiet, almost mystical presence. Steeped in history, this cathedral once hosted papal coronations and remains a powerful testament to Viterbo’s medieval importance. Step inside and you’ll find a peaceful, contemplative interior, rich with centuries of faith, history, and resilience. Whether you’re religious or simply an admirer of architecture and history, this cathedral is a must-see. A moving, unforgettable stop on any visit to Viterbo.
SUR E — Google review
Viterbo Cathedral was built on the site of an early Christian church (287AD) and reflects the early martyrs of the Christian faith, as believers were killed for refuting the pagan Roman gods. It's nowhere near as ornate as later Catholic churches, but with simplicity also comes beauty, and the Nave is a place for quiet reflection and respect for the past.
Patrick C — Google review
a beautiful blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, offering a peaceful atmosphere perfect for quiet reflection. The tall columns, crafted arches, and subtle frescoes add to its charm.
M E — Google review
The cathedral had a gorgeous ceiling although the building itself was surprisingly plain. There were the remains of some wall frescoes by the altar and one of the chapels had the best example of tromp l'oeil we'd ever seen. The bronze plated doors were impressive too. Entrance was included with the Papal Palace ticket next door.
Marcus H — Google review
The oldest records of the presence of a house of worship dedicated to St. Lawrence the Martyr on the present Cathedral Hill date back to the early Middle Ages. As early as 775 there is mention of a pieve of S. Laurentii and Petrus, its presbyter, and in a bull of Pope Leo IV (852) there still appears a reference to it. Full consecration, however, would come in 1192, the year Celestine III united Viterbo, Blera, Tuscania and Cencelle into a single diocese, insignifying the church with the title of Cathedral. Between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, important interventions were planned on the layout of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, which, however, remained unexpressed (Antonio da Sangallo). During the 16th century there were conspicuous interventions on the structure.

We had pizza etrusca (which was fantastic) , pizza cacio, pepe e pancetta, pizza limone (good option for vegetarians) and fettuccine Al limone e mentuccia di campo (very good pasta). Ice cream was just fantastic. 5euros portion was good for two people. Locals suggest this place, and so do I.

Piazza del Plebiscito is a major attraction in Viterbo, Italy. It serves as the city's focal point and is surrounded by medieval and Renaissance buildings. The Palazzo dei Priori, a notable municipal building, stands on one side of the square. Visitors can also admire the Chiesa della Santissima Trinita from its free-to-enter courtyard.
What a fantastic city! Viterbo is a city in central Italy and was the seat of the popes in the 13th century. We had cocktails and spent an hour or so people watching in this amazing piazza (Piazza del Plebiscito) which also includes the Palazzo dei Priori, Prefettura di Viterbo, and Chiesa di Sant'Angelo in Spatha.

Restaurant
Trattoria L'Archetto is a charming and intimate kitchen located on one of the most elegant streets in Viterbo, via Saffi. The restaurant offers seasonal homestyle dishes and open-air seating, creating a delightful dining experience. The menu features authentic Viterbese cuisine with specialties such as bujone di pecora, pollo alla viterbese, and raviolacci con le castagne, all priced between 6 and 8 euros.
This restaurant was just down the street from our air bnb. Let me tell you… we were in Rome previously and went to a restaurant with really high reviews, and it was crap compared to this. This was the best pasta I’ve ever had. I had the carbonara and my partner had the Ragu. I am still dreaming of it. One recommendation would be to serve better bread, like a focaccia would be the cherry on top. We also got the tiramisu… wow. The entire bill was €35…. Our bill at the place in Rome was €60
Alexandra E — Google review
Where do I begin?! From the food, to the service, to the atmosphere, this gem is truly a breath of fresh air. The charming outdoor alleyway, lit by a chain of lightbulbs woven with vines and situated underneath a cozy stone arch, seemed to transport my friend and I to a place and time where no cares were given and all was merry – if ever a time existed... SERVICE: Our lovely servers, especially the warm, exuberant Elisabetta, paid special attention to us and even offered an extra digestivo of a Liquore di Nocciola (hazelnut liquor that tasted like Nutella!). FOOD: Portions were very generous for the cost: big secondi dishes for only €13... doesn't exist in big cities like Rome or Florence! All meat dishes were tender and you could tell were slow-cooked with a lot of heart and care. The pasta dish I got my second visit was almost as thin as angel hair and had an inventive, delicate hazelnut pesto and slow-cooked orange and red pomodorini. Perfect, light dinner. FRESHNESS: I saw a waitress swap out a little paper menu posted outside the front door at lunch, showing an entirely new menu. This was confirmation that all food is fresh, seasonal, and cooked day off. Please, do not deprive yourself of the experience of having dinner here. Lunch is good too, but the charm of the evening atmosphere is too gorgeous to pass up!

Il Gargolo is a charming local trattoria located in the historic center of Piazza Della Morte. It offers a delightful dining experience with outdoor seating and a friendly, helpful staff. The restaurant is known for its delicious seafood dishes, such as the grilled octopus served over potato puree, which perfectly balances bold flavors with traditional Italian home cooking. Visitors can expect an interesting and original menu paired with impeccable service and wine.
Stumbled on this restaurant by chance tonight. Setting is lovely under the trees and the waitress was lovely. We really enjoyed the eggplant parmigiana we shared the spaghetti with clams and fried artichoke was the best pasta we’ve had on our 3 week trip around Italy. Most enjoyable meal and service

Piazza della Morte in Viterbo is a charming, intimate square that carries the historical ambiance of the medieval city. It’s a peaceful spot, tucked away from the busier parts of town, which makes it an ideal place to enjoy a meal at Il Gargolo. This ristorante we come for many years now and why? The spot , the piazza due to historical setting with the big fontain and the tipical italian lights which gives a Romantic atmosphere, the food is very good as the large variety of choice they have and can suggest. The staff is so nice and super friendly and just want to give you a best night out. They have local products and cuisine. All combined so you’ll have the perfect total package for dining romantically together or with your family.

Excellent choice for a Saturday lunch, super location by the fountain on the piazza. Our server was great and allowed us to practice our marginal Italian on her even though she spoke perfect English 🙂 Put me down as a huge fan of the tonnarelli, perfect pasta and so generous withe the pecorino and guanciale- delizioso! The wife's got the polpo (octopus) antipasto, so tender and full of flavour, and a very generous portion as well😊 We will be certain to return on our next visit to Viterbo!
Brian V — Google review
Excellent food! All, or most of pastas, can be made gluten free and many of antipasto and seconds are already gluten free. Upon asking about gluten free options, the staff gave me the usual disclaimer about the kitchen not being dedicated gluten free and bring unable to guarantee no cross contamination, but I tried two antipastos and a pasta and had no symptoms. Food was delicious and the outdoor seating atmosphere was delightful.

I recently visited the mall in Viterbo, and I was quite underwhelmed. Once inside, I found the selection of stores to be limited. Many of the shops seemed to carry the same generic merchandise, lacking any unique or trendy options. It felt like a missed opportunity for something special in the area. Additionally, the food court left much to be desired. The choices were sparse, and the few eateries available didn't seem to prioritize quality. The seating areas were often messy, and it appeared that cleanliness was not a top priority for the staff. To make matters worse, the customer service was lacking. Employees at various stores seemed disinterested and unhelpful, which added to the overall disappointing atmosphere.

From the mixed appetizer to the dessert, everything was delicious and original. A seafood first course and a guinea fowl terrine were brought together with just the right amount of anticipation. The desserts were delicious: gelato in a pool of blueberries cooked in wine, and mint mousse in a chocolate shell. Excellent wine and beer. I hadn't seen coffee in a cup with a lid in a long time. The prices were reasonable for the food and the hospitality. My heartfelt congratulations for your hard work, done with care and passion. The National Etruscan Museum Rocca Albornoz in Viterbo offers a fascinating journey into the ancient origins of the city, focusing on Etruscan archaeology. Visitors can explore the spectacular necropolis of Castel d'Asso with its tombs carved into the rock and visit Cava di Sant'Antonio, a narrow path carved into tufa by the Etruscans. The museum houses several works of art found in these locations and others discovered later.
During my visit to the beautiful city of Viterbo, I had the pleasure of exploring the National Etruscan Museum located within the impressive Albornoz Fortress. As I stepped inside the fortress, I was immediately struck by the incredible architecture and rich history that surrounded me. The fortress itself was a fascinating sight to behold, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as I wandered through its winding passages and expansive courtyards. The fact that it was originally constructed in 1354 by Cardinal Gil Alvarez Carillo de Albornoz, who was the general vicar of the Church domains, only added to its historical significance and charm. As I made my way through the museum's stunning collection of Etruscan artifacts, I was impressed by the intricate detail and exquisite craftsmanship that went into each piece. From intricate gold jewelry and delicate pottery to impressive bronze sculptures and beautifully preserved frescoes, there was no shortage of breathtaking treasures to discover. One of the highlights of my visit was the opportunity to learn more about the Etruscan civilization and its fascinating history. Through the museum's informative exhibits and interactive displays, I gained a deeper appreciation for this ancient culture and the significant impact it had on the development of Italy and the Mediterranean world. Overall, my visit to the National Etruscan Museum was a truly unforgettable experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Viterbo. The combination of stunning architecture, rich history, and remarkable artifacts make it a must-see destination for anyone interested in art, culture, and history.

Good museum covering the Etruscans very well. An easy visit for those not too museumy in that it is not too large. For me the key finds were the 2500 years old decorated terracotta roof tiles, far better than anything produced today and the small statue of Demeter dug up from the actual temple it adorned only a few miles away.

It was built on the site of a castle that once stood, after being bombed and restored several times in its history. The most recent parish minister is active and interacts with the faithful after masses are held.

It is built from 1237 on land donated by Pope Gregory IX to the Conventual Franciscan Order (OFMConv). Outside at the right side corner is a hexagonal pulpit (1238) as a memorial of Bernardino of Siena's preaching in Viterbo. The church has a bell tower with a bell from 1259. The paintings of the ancient basilica were entirely frescoed (mostly by Antonio del Massaro) similarly to the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, most are lost when the church is partly destroyed by the Allied bombings on January 17, 1944. It is restored to its original Romanesque appearance and elevated as minor Basilica in 1949 but officially reopened in 1953. Artworks which have survived include: (1) Pietà by Tommaso Masini; (2) baptismal font and a canvas of Madonna with Child and Saints by Monaldo Trofi; (3) 1269 funerary monument of Pietro di Vico by Pietro Oderisi; (4) 1270 funerary monument of Pope Clement IV (died 1268), by Pietro Oderisi; (5) Gothic funerary monument of pope Adrian V (died 1276), attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, with a rich Cosmatesque decoration; (6) funerary statue, in peperino, of cardinal Vicedomino de Vicedominis; (7) the funerary monument of cardinal Marco of Viterbo (died in 1369); (8) large funerary monument of cardinal Gerardo Landriani (died in 1445) (9) panel portraying Viterbo with Saints Antony of Padua and Rose of Viterbo (1572). Inside the Church there is also the relics of St. Francis and St. Elizabeth of Hungary.

It owes its name to the privileged position to reach Via Cassia in a northerly direction, towards Florence: al its interior, however, contains the beautiful Piazza della Rocca, a wide-ranging scenario where they are located different points of interest. Porta Fiorentina has three gates currently used for the passage of cars, plus two more at ends reserved instead for pedestrian transit: an imposing appearance which, however, the door has not always had. The structure visible today stands in fact in correspondence with an ancient door that had the name "Santa Lucia": it was only in 1768, by resolution of the Municipality of Viterbo, that the door was completely rebuilt, expanding it in response to the new needs of the city. In fact, the coat of arms of the Municipality is visible on the door, characterized by a crowned lion in front of a palma: however, together with it there are also the coats of arms of the governor Benedetto Lo Presti, del bishop of the time Giacomo Oddi and, on top, that of the Pope of Rome Clement XIII, under whose pontificate the works were carried out. The current, grandiose appearance of the door, however, is mainly due to further restorations that came carried out in 1886: this is in fact the year in which the local Cassa di Risparmio decided to finance the works aimed at improving transit and viability of the port. The two arches on the sides were therefore opened, while the wall was completely demolished.

Porta Romana in Viterbo is a historic site where the annual Macchina of Santa Rosa procession begins. The Macchina, carried by a hundred men known as the Facchini, is paraded through the major streets of Viterbo to seven churches for blessings before reaching its final destination at Piazza di Santa Rosa. The area also houses the Provincia di Viterbo tourist information office, offering an array of free resources for tourists to explore the region.

Fontana Grande is one of the many impressive fountains in Viterbo, adding to the city's water-themed charm. It is located in a square alongside other historical landmarks like Palazzo dei Priori. The fountain itself is considered a nice addition to the square, although some feel it could use some maintenance. Despite its appeal, its location near traffic makes it difficult for visitors to fully appreciate its beauty. Nonetheless, the surrounding area offers a pleasant atmosphere with nearby bars for visitors to enjoy.

The Palazzo dei Priori is a significant monument in the city, serving as the town hall and boasting a rich history dating back to the 15th century. Polo Monumentale Colle Del Duomo is a historical site that showcases the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The San Lorenzo Cathedral's facade and the marble baptismal font by Francesco d'Ancona are notable Renaissance features. Additionally, Michelangelo's Crucifixion in the Colle del Duomo Museum adds to its cultural significance. Nearby, Palazzo Farnese and Dragon Palace offer insights into powerful families of that era.
The museum is a part of a heritage complex that includes the Palazzo dei Papi and the Cathedral. It's very detailed and well curated and is split into three main sections: an archaeological section, with finds from Etruscan, Roman and medieval periods; a historical-artistic section with works from the 13th to 20th centuries; and a sacred section with church vestments, liturgical objects associated with popes, bishops, etc. Well worth the €10 admission, audio guide and map included.

Santa Maria Nuova in Viterbo is a medieval church with a rich history and stunning interior. The church houses precious paintings and ancient frescoes dating back to 1320, creating a peaceful and solemn atmosphere. Visitors are captivated by the magic that unfolds upon crossing the threshold. The cloister, composed of peperino arches, adds to its unique charm.
The only church in Viterbo that survived in its original medieval form the centuries and well worth a visit. The frescos on the wall still have vivid colours. The most interesting item in the church is the triptych painted on leather. But the stone pulpit on the outside, from which Thomas of Aquino has preached in the 13th century, is special too
Seimen B — Google review
Many works of art and some frescoes as well, dating as far back as 1320, in a peaceful atmosphere. The structure is simple and solemn. It has on the outside a pulpit from where Tommaso d'Aquino spoke.

I have a beautiful memory of Don Angelo Gargiuli, a parish priest who managed to revive the entire neighborhood in many facets. Unfortunately, his successor did not do that. One thing that needs to be changed, shared by many, is carrying the Holy Savior by oxen. Carrying it on the shoulders of the devotees would be humanly speaking much more correct, given that these creatures come from far away, making exhausting journeys.

Every September, the charming city of Viterbo comes alive with vibrant festivities dedicated to its patron saint, Santa Rosa. The highlight of these celebrations is the awe-inspiring Macchina di Santa Rosa, a towering structure that stands at an impressive 30 meters and weighs over five tons. This magnificent creation is carried through the city's streets by around 100 dedicated porters known as Facchini.

It is one of the most important attractions of Viterbo which attracts tens of thousands of tourists and citizens on September 3rd of each year (transport day). It involves moving this tower along a pre-established route that crosses the heart of the city and is preceded by flag-wavers and musical bands. All in homage to the Saint as a sign of devotion. Il Monastero is a rustic eatery in Viterbo known for its high-quality pizza and artisanal pastries. The restaurant has received accolades for its unique and thin crust pizzas, which are cooked to perfection in a top-notch wood-fired oven. Located within a charming cloister, the restaurant offers traditional local dishes with an Etruscan influence. The cozy atmosphere and clean facilities make it a great choice for enjoying authentic Viterbese cuisine.
Great first meal in Viterbo and they had gluten free pizza! My family and I (gluten free) came here on recommendation of our booking.com host and it did not disappoint. They do these crazy double pizzas where you can pick different flavors for each side. I expected a frozen gluten free crust and to only be able to select one flavor. To my extremely pleasant surprise, the waitress told me I can also pick two! I was so happy to be included in this restaurants special style of pizza and really enjoyed the whole experience. The pizzas are huge but dont worry, they are thin so you will be able to finish more than you expect. Go in person to put your name on the list as the restaurant gets super busy, seating is communal at these giant tables which adds to the fun and friendly atmosphere.

(Translated by Google) “Leccabaffo” is an interesting stop for those looking for simple and authentic street food in the center of Viterbo. I tried the lampredotto sandwich, offered in a version that I could define as "Viterbo style": the meat is tasty but is slightly overcooked, losing a bit of the typical consistency that one would expect from a traditional Florentine cooking. The staff is friendly and welcoming, helping to create a pleasant atmosphere even for a quick stop. The price is right for the quality and quantity offered, making the place a valid option for an informal lunch in the heart of the city. An unpretentious place, where you can eat well and feel at ease. Steak lovers Trap. Unfortunately they don’t even know what does it mean a proper steak. First of all we ordered Bone-in Scottona and Danish beef. Bone-in Scottona was very dry meat average flavor. But when it comes to called “Danisg Beef” first of all you get a scam for the size. Instead of 200/250 grams you get around 100 gram. Second of all the meat is uneatable, not sure if it was a beef at all, maybe is some kind local dog. Meat was very bad quality and hard as a chewing gum. Our family was disappointed of restaurant who makes the meat in such disrespect. One of us took the burger, it was maybe only thing that was eatable and can be understood. Maybe as pizzeria this place is ok, but adding steak house in pizzeria was already looking fishy. And yes, for conclusion you can’t expect everything in one that will have a quality. Recommendation for the restaurant, please specify at something one, not all the dishes. Respond to restaurant comment: I understand this comment sounds bad, but that is the truth about the steak you offer. At the end the staff could ask for customers opinion, so bad reviews could be avoided changing the meat after customers disappointments.

No one had any interest in starting to work inside... We turned away... Thank you EAT, had high expectations but when you're hungry and you show such poor interest - no, thank you! When I got there I waited at least 10 minutes before someone showed up at the counter to serve the customers present. After some time I manage to pay for what should have been my margherita pizza with olives. When I got home I noticed that the olives were not on the pizza, I decided to go back to the restaurant, and once I arrived I pointed this out. The girl present there replied that they didn't have any olives, which was something I wasn't told either when ordering or when picking up. When I asked to have something else on the pizza I was told that I would have to pay a supplement. I then asked if they had a condiment that didn't require a supplement and the answer was "oil", in a sarcastic tone. Whereupon I left with my cold margherita pizza.

The staff is kind and welcoming, they exactly reflect the atmosphere that you breathe in the wooden kiosk, very cute, in "mountain" style, it seems to be catapulted out of the city, while in reality the imposing walls of Viterbo center are just a few meters away. I've booked a visit there, the guide was very kind, explained very well and the story behind this building is so interesting it got me fully immersed. The architecture is very interesting and it's stunning to see the problems it had during its construction hundreds of years ago are still visible as of today!

San Sisto in Viterbo is a stunning example of a medieval church, located near Porta Romana or S. Sisto. The facade and bell tower are noteworthy, while the interior is majestic with three naves and regular columns topped by slender composite capitals. Although heavily bombed during World War II, the church has been reconstructed to restore its original structure from the post-war period.

The Museo del Sodalizio Facchini di Santa Rosa, situated on Via di San Pellegrino, displays mainly replicas of the tower-shaped formation that is transported annually throughout Viterbo in tribute to the revered Saint Rosa. The museum showcases a variety of these structures, which are carried by a hundred men known as the Facchini from Porta Romana to various churches for blessings before being laboriously hoisted to their final destination at Piazza di Santa Rosa.
A must see, especially because it's free of charge and the staff is welcoming, passionate and knowledgeable about the porters of Saint Rosa and the traditional procession. Every question was kindly answered. Upstairs there's a fraction of a video from the procession.

(Translated by Google) Visiting the Museum of the Porters' Association of Santa Rosa in Viterbo was a fascinating and surprisingly engaging experience, one I recommend to anyone who wants to immerse themselves in a unique tradition. Despite its smaller size compared to larger, more sprawling museums, every inch is carefully and meaningfully displayed. The space is small but well-organized, immediately conveying a sense of intimacy that encourages concentration on the details and the ability to truly appreciate what you see. The heart of the exhibition is undoubtedly the collection of scale models of the "Macchine di Santa Rosa," the imposing structures that every year, on the evening of September 3rd, are carried on the shoulders of the Porters through the city streets. Seeing these models up close is thrilling: you can appreciate the architectural lines, the creative solutions adopted over the years, and the extraordinary variety of styles that have characterized the different iterations of the Macchina. Some models display a sober and slender elegance, others emphasize an impressive wealth of detail; All, however, speak of the passion and commitment of artisans, designers, and porters. The museum's display of objects is designed to take visitors on a journey through time and tradition. The display cases and showcases are well-lit, allowing for unobstructed observation of every detail. Captions and period photographs help contextualize the models, transforming the visit into a living narrative, not just a static display. The atmosphere is welcoming and familiar. Despite the limited space, one never feels cramped: the thoughtful layout and the warm welcome of the staff contribute to making the visit pleasant and relaxing. Here, one doesn't feel like an impersonal place, but rather like a guest in a Viterbo "house of tradition," where each piece on display is linked to stories, emotions, and collective memories. In conclusion, the Museum of the Porters' Association of Santa Rosa is a small gem that encapsulates centuries of history, devotion, and civic pride in just a few square meters. You don't have to be a Viterbo native to be moved by the models of the Machines: just let yourself be transported by their beauty and the profound meaning they hold. A place to visit slowly, to breathe in the authentic soul of Viterbo.

Underground Srl Viterbo is a fascinating network of tunnels beneath the city of Viterbo, with origins dating back to the time of the Etruscans. These tunnels were expanded and modified during the medieval period, creating a labyrinthine system of secret passages that connected strategic structures in Viterbo. The accessible section of these underground tunnels spans a hundred meters on two levels under Piazza della Morte, offering visitors a glimpse into the ancient history and architecture of the city.

I returned to this shop after years of absence, but with great regret I noted that it has now changed into a sad reality if compared to the golden years of the historic location in Corso Matteotti, when buying records and CDs at the Underground was an obligatory stop every whenever you came to Viterbo. In those days I remember very well the shop was really stocked with CDs of every musical genre, the shop assistants (who I have never seen again) were kind and competent, and you could really find everything. Today, however, there are far fewer CDs overall (sold at a premium compared to other physical stores or on the web), the rock and metal department reduced to a squalid shelf with very few pieces. All topped off with a less than friendly attitude from the owner. And secondhand smoke everywhere inside the venue. Infinite sadness. (Original) Involuzione Epocale. E fumo passivo ovunque all'interno del locale. Tristezza infinita.

(Translated by Google) I brought my concert tickets to change the name by having the future owners come from outside and we had a terrible welcome, in addition to the rudeness even though we spoke very politely he was not able to make the change and also wanted me to call the call center (1.83 € per minute) to understand why HIM (his job) did not let him do it. His answer to my question "what should we do" was: I can't do anything about it, if you think you can do it then take my place, to the question of the boy (future owner) "maybe we are looking at the wrong concert" he replied with a smile "but please come on" giving him the tickets in his hands.

Dating back to the 13th century, it served as the papal residence after Rome. The iconic "lodge" called "delle Benedizioni" was where the pope made official appearances after the Conclave.
Fine sanctuary, wide spaces, peaceful prayer place.

(Translated by Google) The Santuario della Quercia is the most important place of Marian worship in the province of Viterbo. It was built starting in 1467, near the place where according to tradition the icon of the "Virgin Mary with a child in her arms" was placed, commissioned in 1417 to the painter Monetto and placed among the branches of an oak tree. The Sanctuary has a façade with three entrance portals surmounted by terracotta lunettes, the work of Andrea Della Robbia, while the tall bell tower is the work of Ambrogio da Milano, isolated from the façade. The interior of the church is a masterpiece of Renaissance harmonies, divided into three naves by two rows of columns supporting large round arches; in the central nave the beautiful coffered ceiling, created by Giovanni di Pietro known as Pazera based on a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, features the coat of arms of Paul III and the lilies of the Farnese family. In the center of the presbytery stands the marble aedicule by Andrea Bregno that contains the oak and the miraculous tile. The painting, although beautiful and small, is placed at the top of the aedicule, and cannot be approached, the glass placed in front and the lighting make it difficult even to photograph it. Beyond the tabernacle opens a grandiose choir, inlaid by Francesco di Domenico di Zanobi del Tasso and Giuliano di Giovanni called Pollastra, now reduced to two thirds of its original length. The complex is enriched by two cloisters, one from the 15th and the other from the 16th century. One of the two cloisters can be glimpsed from a beautiful window, if the parish priest is not present it cannot be visited. There are few parking lots.

(Translated by Google) The construction was built in its essential structures between the end of the 15th century and the first thirty years of the 16th century, in place of a primitive country church, little more than a wooden hut. The erection took place as an act of devotion of the people of Viterbo to the image of the Madonna and Child which in 1417 a certain Battista Juzzante had painted on a tile. The elegant facade of bevelled ashlar peperino, which ends in a tympanum with two lions on the sides of an oak, is opened by a central oculus (between two small lateral ones) and by portals, whose jambs are decorated with old-fashioned candelabras, the lunettes contain precious glazed terracottas by Andrea della Robbia (1503). The airy interior, remodeled in the renovations carried out between 1861 and 1880, is divided into three naves divided by large arches supported by two rows of columns, essentially the result of projects by Giuliano da Sangallo inspired by Brunelleschi's S. Spirito in Florence. It alone is worth the trip.

(Translated by Google) The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Quercia, located just outside Viterbo, has its origins in 1417, when a farmer commissioned a local artist, known as Monetto or "Mastro Martello", to create an image of the Virgin Mary with Child on a simple earthenware tile. The work, hanging from the branches of an oak tree, quickly became an object of veneration thanks to the miracles attributed to it. A legend says that every time the image was removed, it mysteriously returned to its place on the tree. Another evocative tradition tells that, while the artist was sleeping, some angels miraculously completed the face of the Virgin. Over time, the influx of devotees increased, especially during the plague of 1467, when the citizens of Viterbo prayed to the Madonna della Quercia and, according to tradition, obtained the cessation of the contagion. Between 1467 and the 16th century, the simple initial chapel was expanded into a grandiose Renaissance church, probably designed by Giuliano da Sangallo. The sanctuary was embellished with works by great masters: Andrea della Robbia created the terracotta lunettes, Antonio da Sangallo the Younger designed the coffered ceiling, and Andrea Bregno sculpted the marble temple that still houses the miraculous image. The wooden ceiling, gilded with gold from the New World, was donated by Pope Paul III Farnese.

"L'Alambicco del Presidente" is a fantastic restaurant with excellent service. The dishes are not only delicious but also beautifully presented. The Pinsa and the local long pasta "Lombatricceli" carbonara are particularly outstanding. Additionally, the antipasto, focaccia, and soup of the day are heavy hitters in terms of flavor. To complement the meal, they offer a great selection of wines from the Lazio region.
Wonderful restaurant and very well serviced. All dishes ordered were mouthwatering and nicely served. The Pinsa I had was quite delicious. The soup of the day was heavy loaded. The local long pasta "Lombatricceli" carbonara was outstanding. Antipasto and focaccia not words to describe. Good wine from Lazio region didn't let us down. 3 desserts were ordered and all were special.

First the positive, good location,. Beer was cold and good. Now the bad; I had a party of three with a 80 year old friend. They split the group up and put my old friend on the elevated level. Bad idea. The service was terrible, I asked that the come out together. It did not. One plate was polenta with sausage, it arrive luke warm. My friend was to polite to send back for a refire. Plate two Gnocchi with sauce. This was hot and good arrived about 5 minutes after the first. Third plate Polenta with mushrooms arrive 24 minutes after the first plate and it was cold. We did send that back for a reheat another 10 minutes. However it was good after that. The servers appeared to be untrained and not customer friendly. I understand its a stressful time Customer service is important and some knowledge of the business is helpful. I voiced my complaints and mentioned we bring groups to the area a few times a year.. the cashier, replied 44 Euro. OK I asked for at least three cafe for goodwill. She was kind enough to oblige with a frown. I will compliment the cook on flavor of all food was good, I blame the service for a bad time. I paid

Great interior décor but aweful service. Waiters were disorganized and forgot one of our pasta dishes (mains). We got put off by the quality of the dishes and poor service so we decided not to re-order the dish and ask for the bill. However when it came, we saw that the restaurant was still going to charge us for the plate that was not served. We explained the situation and finally got the right bill (in spite of some hassle from the staff).

We don’t easily feel tourist trapped, but we did here. We arrived one of the first days of our Italian vacation, at the end of the lunch service with four adults, a 3-year old and a baby of 2 months. The owner (or who we believe was the owner) promptly and kindly suggested we take today’s special. We didn’t see a menu or board, but assumed today’s special was a dish, not a menu. We received some appetizers and a good main dish. We don’t complain about the quality /quantity of the food: it was fine. Service was fast. We were out of the restaurant in less than an hour. However, when the bill came and we were charged near 300 euro, we felt somehow cheated. Especially when we got to know Italian restaurant prizes during our trip...

La Pinseria di via Saffi is a must-visit in Viterbo, known for its fantastic pinsa with fresh cut ham and salami. The shop may be small with limited seating, but the pinsa is outstanding. We’ve been to La Pinseria di Viterbo several times since moving here, and it has quickly become one of our favorite spots! The pinsas are consistently delicious—the dough is light, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Toppings are always fresh and high-quality, which makes every bite stand out. So far, we’ve only done takeout, but the outdoor seating looks perfect for enjoying a relaxed meal with a beer, and everyone here is always welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Highly recommend for anyone in Viterbo looking for authentic, beautifully done pinsa with great service!

Delicious lunch at La Pergoletta! Wide variety on the menu, we had the Duck and Cod Primi Piatti. Both were very good, orange garnish on the duck was brilliant; however, there were a few bones left in the meal. Ambiance was a garden patio which we liked, but we were arbitrarily asked to move after finding a table in a quiet corner. Overall, this was a good experience, at a moderate price for lunch in an excellent location with an interesting menu. On another note, there is a resident Somalier, and while we do not drink alcohol, this seems like the place to go for a well paired meal. Free wifi was also a major plus, as we are hiking the Via Francigena without cell service. We were able to enjoy our meal, enjoy the company, get some work done, and enjoy the rest of the day with moderately full bellies. Thank you for your business, La Pergoletta! 😋
