If you only have 1 day to spend in Orvieto, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Orvieto’s historic center is exceptional, with an intact medieval wall and a must-see cathedral with impressive gold and mosaic exterior. But Orvieto’s exceptional beauty is not limited to its ancient monuments. The entire city offers a unique cultural and historical experience, with its wealth of Renaissance art and architecture, winding streets, and charming cafes. Head underground to experience the unexpected city of overlapping tunnels and caverns below the streets of Orvieto, or climb high up in the fresh air to Torre del Moro - a medieval tower giving visitors an uninterrupted view of the city below.
With favorites like Orvieto Cathedral, Museo dell'Opera del Duomo di Orvieto, and Church of Saint Dominic, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Gelateria Il Gelato Di Pasqualetti and Coro Ristorante so you can get the best taste of Orvieto while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The Duomo di Orvieto is a 1300s cathedral with a stunning gold facade adorned with glittering mosaics. The cathedral is famous for its chapel filled with intricate frescoes. The construction of the cathedral began in 1290 and involved several architects over the years. A museum opposite the Duomo offers an opportunity to explore Italy's significant collection of Etruscan artifacts, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts.
We had a 30-minute time frame to visit this spot and we enjoyed walking the town and only took pictures of the outside of this cathedral. You can see the stripes from a distance which indicates the side of the cathedral so it is relatively easy to find. The detail on the front of the cathedral is incredible and it was fun to stand and study it.

The Orvieto Cathedral is truly impressive. Its location on top of the hill structure naturally provides it with a well-protected position. The most striking feature is the exterior, where the gold-painted facade beautifully catches the sunset light. Inside, the sculptures and the overall aesthetic of the interior make for a very pleasant and rewarding visit.
Flo Y — Google review
As the most famous attraction in the city, this church is magnificent and rich in historical value. Legend has it that Michelangelo visited it in his youth to draw inspiration, which shows how profound its artistic value is. The church itself is not as magnificent as other churches in Rome, but the sculptures here convey the people's worship and longing for the church at that time. If you have enough time, I recommend purchasing a ticket to visit the underground city. Unfortunately, we arrived early this time and the guided tour had not yet started. I believe I will definitely visit the underground city next time I visit!
Zen C — Google review
It's a massive Cathedral. The experience is amazing. It is as much a gallery of art as a place of worship. So as a mark of respect don't use camera inside the Cathedral. For tourists, take a train from Rome, or Florence to Orvieto. Then the Funicular to the top of the hill. There's a small fort and a underground place also for visitors. Local food is very good and reasonably priced

The Duomo in Orvieto is one of the most beautiful churches I’ve visited in Italy. The outside is stunning — the front is full of detailed mosaics, sculptures, and gold decorations that shine in the sunlight. The walls are made of black and white stone in stripes, which makes it look very unique compared to other cathedrals. Inside, the cathedral is peaceful and full of history. The most impressive part is the Chapel of San Brizio, where you can see amazing frescoes by Luca Signorelli. These paintings show scenes from the Last Judgment and the Apocalypse, and the emotion and detail in the faces are incredible. It’s hard to believe they were painted over 500 years ago. Another highlight is the crypt, which many visitors miss. It’s small but very interesting, with ancient frescoes, old tombs, and Christian symbols. It feels like a hidden part of the cathedral that connects you to a much older time. Overall, the Duomo is not just beautiful — it also tells many stories through its art and structure. If you’re in Orvieto, don’t miss it. It’s a perfect mix of architecture, art, and history in one place.

Stunning architecture! Italy is home to many exceptional cathedrals, but this one truly stands out as one of the most remarkable in all of Europe. Entry is only €6.50, and remember to cover your shoulders and legs to be allowed inside. The grandeur and beauty are absolutely breathtaking, you’ll be amazed.
Marta S — Google review
This is a stunning 1500 church in the Florence style using the black and white stones to create the iconic stripes. The fresco paintings inside are well worth a look. They depict the Last Judgment, featuring vivid scenes of the Resurrection of the Flesh, the Elect in Paradise, and the Damned in Hell.Buy the entry tickets opposite.

Stunning! Difficult to rate a place of worship, but well worth a visit. Not very busy and the chapels are almost on par with the Vatican Museum in Rome a real gem

Orvieto Underground is a captivating network of tunnels, caves, and wells located beneath the city of Orvieto in Umbria. Dating back 2.5 to 3 millennia ago, this subterranean world comprises over 1,200 artificial cavities that were rediscovered by local speleologists in the late 1970s. The underground space served various purposes throughout history, including storage areas for wine and olive oil.
I recently explored the Orvieto Underground, and it was an amazing experience! 😮‍💨 The tour took me deep into the heart of the city, revealing ancient Etruscan tunnels and hidden chambers. I was fascinated to see the different wells and cisterns, used centuries ago for water collection 💧and storage. It's incredible to think about the engineering and ingenuity of the people who built this underground world.🏛️ I highly recommend this unique adventure when you visit Orvieto, it's a real journey through time. #OrvietoUnderground #HiddenItaly #AncientHistory #Travelgram #Explore

Fascinating place. Great to understand the systems and procedures the people had in the Middle-Ages against a siege. The water supply for Orvieto comes from outside the city walls via natural springs. In a siege these are not possible to access. You will learn on this tour how they provided for the community. Plus you learn how to have an ongoing supply of food. All because the Romans knew how to make concrete and the essential element, cement. Pozzolana is a reactive siliceous material, found naturally as volcanic ash, that is added to cement. Anyway, very interesting. On a hot day this place is a great place to go :) If you like history and human ingenuity then go on this tour.
Simon C — Google review
The Orvieto Underground tour was a truly insightful experience. It's amazing to see how the city's residents leveraged its unique geology to create a hidden network of over 400 tunnels and spaces. This provided them with a safe haven and a means of survival. The tour was well-paced and we were able to see an ancient olive oil mill, a pigeon farm, and a hospital, all hidden beneath the city. To avoid disappointment, make sure to get your tickets in advance. You can book them online or at the ticket counter by the Cathedral. It's important to remember that they have separate schedules for Italian and English tours.
Flo Y — Google review
Really interesting tour of some of the extensive tunnel network that runs under the town, built by the Etruscans over 2000years ago, mainly for water collection but also to home pigeons as a food source during times of siege. Well worth doing, suggest book in advance or for after your visit to the cathedral. Great guide, very knowledgeable.

Excellent attraction not to be missed when visiting Orvieto. Our guide (for the English tour) is called ROSITA. She is beyond FABULOUS! We learned A LOT during the tour. Make sure you buy this one (offered by the city, ticket office in front of the Duomo). There are other underground tours but this one is the biggest and the best (yes, I did my homework before coming to Orvieto).
C T — Google review
A lovely experience under the popular town of Orvieto. Lovely tour guide talks about the Etruscan history. Can get a little tight on the 2nd part of the tour so make sure you are happy with tight spaces. Worth the money.
John — Google review
A must when in Orvieto. Our guide perfectly explained how geology shaped Orvieto. The wells dug by the Etruscans through volcanic stone to reach the water in the clay layer, the cellars used to keep pigeons (for their meat, eggs, and fertile droppings - the Chinese had yet to invent gunpowder) and later to keep safe while under attack,... PS: keep your ticket; it can be used to gain reduction at another attraction in Orvieto.

It was OK. The tour guide was great. She had lots of good, interesting information. Wasn't a whole lot to see, but we enjoyed it. It was worth the price of admission. Not as much as pizza di cave.

The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo di Orvieto is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. It is located on the second floor of Palazzo Soliano and offers in-depth insights into the construction and history of the Duomo. The ground floor is dedicated to Emilio Greco, featuring an exhibition of his bronze works. Visitors can also enjoy combined tickets to explore the Cathedral and Museo Emilio Greco.

The Torre del Moro in Orvieto is a historic clock tower that offers stunning panoramic views of the city and the surrounding countryside. Adjacent to the tower is the Seven building, once owned by the papacy and now serving as a cultural center. The area around the tower is filled with tile shops, art galleries, and museums, including Museo Claudio Faina, Museo Emilio Greco, and Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.
Another site included in the Orvieto Carta Unica. 230 steps to the top (although the first 60 can be skipped by the elevator). The stairs are modern, but in the walls, as you ascend, you will see the notches where the original stairs would have been. At the top you can walk all the way around. Spectacular views in all directions over the city and beyond to the countryside. If you can manage the stairs, the view is certainly worth the climbing.

Torre del Moro in Orvieto, Italy, is a magnificent medieval tower that offers visitors a glimpse into the town's rich history and stunning panoramic views. Standing tall at 47 meters, this iconic structure dates back to the late 13th century and decorates the skyline with its imposing presence. Originally constructed as a watchtower, it has witnessed the passage of time and served various purposes, including housing a water tank. Visitors can climb its 236 steps to reach the top, where they are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding Umbrian landscape and the charming town below. The clock added in the 19th century continues to keep time, a testament to the enduring legacy of this historical gem. Safe travels my friends 🙏♥️😊

The best view in town is from the clock tower …you can see everything from this vantage point and it’s quite impressive The clock town is the highest point of Orvieto and well worth the visit and the climb How far up you ask ? Well you can take the lift (don’t get too excited it only goes to the second floor - so Italian !) once at the 2nd floor it about 170 steps up Thinking I was fairly fit it’s didn’t seem much for a great view of town and surrounding area - I will say I was a little puffed by the time I got to the top and I didn’t take the lift (saving only a few steps) but maybe a good thing ! Once at the top the view was amazing and you certainly forgot quickly the fact that you are a little out of breath It’s a strange this that a wonderful and totally Instagram able town like Orvieto is often forgotten amongst the Florence Rome Amalfi Cinque Terre Venice (your getting the picture - there are so many great places those influencers don’t know about ….yet) If you find yourself in town and I suggest a visit then one thing you must do is walk up the clock tower for the best view in town Enjoy

For a few pounds you can climb 300 steps to the top floor and see the panoramic view of the whole city. It is definitely worth the price! Even if you don’t have much time to visit, it is recommended to come here and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Zen C — Google review
After 250 steps or so you are rewarded with great 360 views of Orvieto and the surrounding area. Ticket price was €3.80 per person, and €3.00 for students. There’s a lift that saves your quads 70 steps or so. Definitely worth seeing if you are up to the challenge!
Daniel C — Google review
Breathtaking views! The 200-odd stairs aren't that many, and you can skip half with the elevator.
Pieter-Jan — Google review
After descending the 54 meters of St. Patrick's well, to keep fit, you can go up the 47 meters of the thirteenth-century "Del Moro" tower. The reward is a nice 360° view over Orvieto. An elevator will help you to reach the first floors. The admission price is €3.80 or it is included in the €25 "ORVIETO CARTA UNICA" cumulative ticket.
Fabio R — Google review
Let’s start with the hard part, this has a lot of steps (170) so before you go make sure that you can make the climb. Once on the top the views are absolutely amazing. With you already being in Orvieto which is on a hill you can see everything in the surrounding valley for the top of the Torre del Moro.

Nestled in the charming town of Orvieto, Bottega Vèra Orvieto is a delightful wine shop that pays homage to its roots, named after the owner's grandmother who once ran a beloved deli. This inviting enoteca boasts an elegant ambiance with sparkling decanters and sleek pine shelving showcasing over 150 wine labels. Here, you can indulge in tastings of the renowned Orvieto DOC wines crafted from Grechetto, Trebbiano, and Malvasia grapes.
Really nice bar in the beautiful town of Orvieto with the most amazing service and atmosphere. My crostini ai carciofi were amazing as it was the wine recommended (from which I took a bottle home) and my boyfriend's panino alla porchetta was to die for likewise. I really recommend that you eat here and avoid the more expensive tourist traps with huge coperto.

We sat inside and it’s very intimate. The tables are arranged so there’s still space and the servers weave through the traffic like experts. The wines were great and prices seemed reasonable. The meat and cheese plate was also very filling. We recommend and will probably be back within a few days. There are seats outside. Lots of regulars

The Church of Saint Dominic, located near Piazza del Popolo and Corso Cavour, is a historic site that has stood for centuries. Although it's now just a part of the original complex, it still holds incredible treasures such as the mausoleum of the Cardinal of Braye and the chair of Thomas Aquinas. The church's current layout is all that remains from its larger original structure, which was mostly demolished in 1934.
Another of Orvieto's numerous churches. Less grand than the Duomo, but still beautiful.

(Translated by Google) A very interesting church built in 1233, one of the first linked to the Dominican Order, established shortly after the Saint's death. Imagine, the rest of the structure was demolished in 1932 to make way for the Women's Academy of Physical Education, now home to the training center of the Baschi Verdi of the Guardia di Fisica! As you approach, you realize that only the apse and part of the transept remain. Inside, it preserves a historical treasure: the pulpit on which Thomas Aquinas sat for his theology classes during the period he lived there, between 1263 and 1264... It also houses the mausoleum of Cardinal De Braye, a work by the artist Arnolfo di Cambio from 1282. Incredibly, restorations have revealed that the statue of the Virgin was originally a Roman sculpture from the 2nd century BC! And then there is the octagonal funerary chapel by Michele Sanmicheli, with its sculptures on the floor. Finally, one can admire the polyptych with the Virgin, Child and Saints by Simone Martini, a masterpiece from 1323-1324, now housed in the Museum of the Works of the Cathedral.

Renowned as one of the top gelaterias in the country, it's known for its award-winning coffee-flavored gelato.

It all started when I was first hungry so I looked for a nearby place to eat something and I randomly found this shop. It looked really cute on the outside and then when I entered I wanted to buy everything, but I only ended up buying a cheap but delicious ice cream. The pastry was amazing, the design was the best thing I ever saw and the workers were super kind. I also drank a coffee which was like adding a cherry on top. Overall, you don't want to miss out this place!

Simply the best, very welcoming staff, delicious ice-cream and sorbet. A little more expensive than the usual place, but that is the usual Orvieto price tag. Coro Ristorante is a hidden gem with multiple meanings behind its name. It's located within a church and is managed by Francesco and Ronald, who previously worked at Osticcio in Montalcino. The restaurant is situated in Orvieto, Perali's hometown. The beautifully renovated chapel offers a unique dining space, complemented by superb food and great service. There's no sign outside; guests must enter through the cocktail bar, Gocce.
A truly unique dining experience inside a 16th-century church. The atmosphere was stunning, and the staff were attentive and explained everything with care. The wine list is extensive, and the food was delicious — mainly Italian-inspired with pasta and meat, but with creative twists in every course. A memorable degustation menu in a remarkable setting. Thank you 🙏

My wife and I live close to Orvieto and decided to try Coro that opened quite recently. The restaurant is stunning, small church, excellent design, marvelous china. We decided to go for one of the menus combined with the wine pairing. Although I did not like the amuses much, the food was truly delicious and the combination with the wines was excellent and creative. The service was very friendly, welcoming and forthcoming. A true team effort. We arrived around 20.00 and left around midnight, which says it all. Very intimate and enjoyable dinner, can not wait to go back.

It pains me to write this...but...we did not have a good experience and I would never go back. Let's start with some positive before we get into it. The ambience is very nice, in an old church. Lighting is really what makes the atmosphere. It creates a very intimate dining experience. Service. Highs and lows here. Our server was spot on with pairing wines with my order. I asked her to simply bring what she felt would pair best with my food, and it was fabulous. However, when we originally placed our order, she didn't write anything down. Sure enough, 5 minutes later she came back asking what we ordered because she said she had forgotten. Now, for the next part, I totally know that waiting for the check is common in Italy. I'm cool with that. But, waiting for FORTY FIVE minutes after you are done??? As in, the table had been cleared, we said we were done, and then sat there and stared at each other for the next 45 minutes watching all of the other tables getting served, including bringing their checks. By this point we were completely over the experience. Food. Presentation was excellent. Taste was 'ok.' I had the mussels and pasta dish. The description should have said 'mussel and pasta dish.' ONE mussel, served on the side. What? So I basically just paid for an overpriced pasta dish. One mussel in a restaurant of this caliber? My father and I both got the lamb as well. The flavor was very good, but the meat could have been a little more tender. My recommendation: spare your wallet and your time, and go somewhere different for dinner, there are many wonderful restaurants in Orvieto.

*An extraordinary space with unique atmosphere and architecture, where each dish follows the next in perfect harmony. Flavors are thoughtfully paired, and the staff is impeccably trained. A refined experience — also ideal for vegetarians.

We had a wonderful experience at Coro. It was truly one of the most beautiful restaurants we have ever been to, and the food was excellent. We particularly loved two of the main courses, the pasta with chicken giblets and the pork neck which was done to perfection. The team are all perfectionists and it shows in their efforts. Would definitely recommend it to others.

The Pellegrini restaurant is a great place to enjoy local Italian meals. The service is friendly and professional, and the food is delicious. The location overlooking the magnificent Piazza Duomo makes it an ideal spot to spend a night in Orvieto.
What a gem! Beautiful place, stunning location and delicious food. We had a great lunch with super tasty starters and perfect pasta. Loved the local wines as well. Very kind and professional service. Sad we are leaving and cannot go back for dinner!

This restaurant is right next to the Duomo and the evening breeze creates such a beautiful ambiance. The dining experience was very slow and the the meat was chewy and not that flavorful with the beef plate.

Excellent as always. Not many excellent restaurants right next to tourist attractions, especially at a reasonable price. I go out of my way to eat here every time I pass by Orvieto. Never been disappointed yet.

We were so surprised by the quality of this restaurant being so close to the Duomo. Excellent service and the setting is so lovely. The menu is creative and fantastic quality. The pigeon was just beautiful

Restaurant
Sette Consoli is a restaurant that has been open for over 20 years. It is in the centre of Orvieto and offers lovely garden seating areas for diners to enjoy their meal. The owner is a former banker who decided to open his restaurant because he had a passion for cooking and Wine (both inherited from his parents). The menu features Italian dishes with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients.
We had a fabulous meal at Consoli! We did the tasting menu of 6 courses and opted for the wine pairings--total of 90E/pp. (60 food/30 wine). We felt a great value compared to most other tasting menus that we have experienced. Seated in their garden on a picture perfect weather evening that was romantic and inviting at the same time. Courses were spaced perfectly with the correct portions. They were generous with their wine pours, total of 4 wines with the last being a dessert wine. Loved the amuse, bread and main of lamb chops! Two types of pasta prior to the main, cheese course and refreshing dessert to top off the perfect evening. If you would like a fine dining experience in Orvieto, I don't think you can do better than I Sette Consoli.

The food here is amazing! Loved the prawn ceviche and the pigeon dishes in particular. Fabulous desserts. All wonderful. A few mosquitos as we sat outside. Not sure why they have staff who are only allowed to collect plates and can’t help with other requests!

Dining at I Sette Consoli was an enchanting experience, marked by the delicate and elegant presentation of each dish. The service was gentle and attentive, complementing the exceptional quality of the food. Although the cheese course left me slightly disappointed due to personal taste preferences, the overall culinary journey was outstanding.

Exceptional meal. Beautiful “house,” garden even more so. Impeccable service: helpful, mindful of pacing and progression, attentive and gracious.. Creative, thoughtful menu making choices challenging. Quality products well prepared, beautifully plated. Extensive, deep and knowledgeable wine list well priced. Most highly recommended.

The worst service ever! Not only in Orvieto, but in the whole Italy! The food is overpriced and not that much of a tasty! They should not accept children if they have to look with annoying faces later! The waitress is rude,my son took one single rosemary out of this vase and she immediately come to tell us “the flowers will get dry”, ladies and gentlemen, please see the “FLOWERS “ in the photo below!

We had a fabulous lunch in the garden. Chose a la carte as we couldn’t have eaten the full tasting menu. Compliments to the chef!

Exquisite food. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Beautiful place and lovely atmosphere. Had the tasting menu with wine pairing. Every single dish was a small wonder - perfectly timed and balanced. The best food experience I have had this year. Among the most memorable in my life. Highly, highly recommended.

What a great restaurant. Amazing service by welcoming, well trained and hospitable staff. We opted for the tasting menu which is a MUST. It is full of surprising dishes you won't find in any other place in town. Our highlight was definitely the wine list that contains beautiful gems for every budget. Be smart and pick something unique from the extensive list!
