Brest in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Brest, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Brest is a major Breton port city known for its impressive natural harbor and long maritime history, showcased at the National Maritime Museum in the restored Château de Brest. Much of the city was rebuilt after World War II, giving it a distinctive mix of historic fortifications and modern urban planning. Visitors can explore the ocean-themed park Océanopolis, walk along the waterfront and commercial port, and use Brest as a base for discovering the rugged coastlines and islands of western Finistère.
With favorites like Burger King, Moulin Blanc beach, and Le Quartz, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Blé noir Brest and Le Tour du Monde so you can get the best taste of Brest while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Aquarium

Cultural center
Oceanopolis is a massive aquarium featuring three distinct zones representing polar, tropical, and temperate marine environments. It offers an opportunity for visitors to discover the wonders of the world's oceans with over a thousand species of marine animals on display. The aquarium boasts one of Europe's largest penguin pools and provides an immersive experience for all ages.
Océanopolis in Brest is the most beautiful aquarium I’ve visited! The tropical and polar pavilions are stunning and full of fascinating marine life. A fun, immersive, and educational experience. I loved it and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the ocean world!
Malak C — Google review
It is ok, but there are far better aquariums around. Admittedly, the place is currently undergoing a major renovation, so a large part of it is closed. But what we did see was mostly digital or interactive displays plus some tanks of mostly small creatures such as shrimps and seahorses. The only big animals visible were a few very bored seals in a tiny tank, swimming round repetitively. There were quite a few English translations and the staff were friendly. We stayed about an hour in total. Definitely don't travel specifically to visit, but it passes the time if you are in the area and the weather is bad. Hopefully, it will be improved when the big renovations are unveiled.
Livia F — Google review
Overall loved the aquarium, just bad timing with the renovations so didn't get to see the sharks and the penguins but really nice and educational. The restaurant has really good food.
Phoebe — Google review
OMG worst aquarium ever ! Huge property seems abandoned. Rusted property. This place is definitely going out of business. Seals were nice. Two or three other fish tanks good. No otters in otter tank. Not one. All food places closed. Nobody here. On a Sunday. There’s no way this survives as a business. Penguins coming in October ! This whole place likely to be torn down in two years. Sad. The young women at the front were cute and funny though !
Robert — Google review
At the time we visited this place, most of the attractions were closed for renovation. It was expensive and we just saw one part of the aquarium. A bit underwhelming. I enjoyed the little thetre experience, though, it could be interesting for children especially.
Subas A — Google review
My slightly low rating is due to a number of the major attractions being closed, which we knew about before our visit but it's definitely something to consider before making your way out. To be fair to the venue the ticket price is currently reduced to reflect the reduced offering but just something to be aware off. I would also score them lowly on the food offering. The restaurant looks cool but on the day we visited, there was a limited offering and the fish and chips was not good. Coffee from the smaller kiosk was also disappointing. The main attractions open we're the Brittany exhibition which is a series of smaller tanks and can opportunity to see the seals swimming under water. You can also view the 4 seals above ground. There is also an otter exhibition with 2-3 otters. They're cute but it's a small exhibition. There are some interactive\educational areas and an outdoor play area. We visited as a family with a 6 and 9 year old and they enjoyed it and we did spend over 3 hours there. It's also easy to get to Oceanopolis by bus from Brest. If you're driving there is plenty of parking including an area for camper vans.
Lisa G — Google review
Every nice aquarium for the whole family. Lots of variety in the exhibits and when small children get restless, there are a few outdoor play areas for them to get the wiggles out. Bring your lunch - the restaurant is mediocre.
John C — Google review
Brilliant way to spend a damp Bretagne day! Took our 8, 7 and 4 year old, spent 6 hours exploring (including lunch...positively gourmet compared with the offerings at an English attraction!) Loads to see, with a nice spacious layout, not crowded on an August bank holiday. No stressful one-way system as we have at many aquariums in the UK - we could see the three main areas in whichever order we wished, and could return to bits we wanted to revisit. Most written info was in both French and English so the children could follow what we were looking at. Special thanks to David and Emanuelle from the first aid team who were extremely attentive and kind when the 4 year old bumped his head and bled a bit. We've never been so well looked after. Highly recommend.

Moulin Blanc beach is a picturesque sandy stretch overlooking the Brest harbor, popular for water sports and home to a large aquarium. The adjacent marina serves as a starting point for cruises to nearby islands or even England, attracting boating enthusiasts and anglers. With its inviting view of the 1,500-boat marina, the area comes alive in summer with bustling cafes and restaurants.
Nice but need more space and less carbage

Lovely soft sand beach almost 1 kilometre long with easy access. The water not so inviting though. Good views of the marina. Various excercise machines outside free to use.
Ewan B — Google review
... we are so lucky to have a huge clean beach like this just on the edge of town, nice for swimming as the bay is sheltered, and of course for sunbathing. There are cafe's and bars just nearby for an ice-creme or a beer if you are so inclined ... spot for the summer :°)

Nice area for Sunday walk or for sports. Definitely not for swimming.

It is a very nice beach. A good location to chill and have some fun, but the water is not as clean as we hoped and the weather isn't perfect everyday.

A reasonable beech that is close to the city. Free parking. If you want waves, you'll need to get out of town. If you want sand and water, this beach has them both.

Historic stadium now due a well earned upgrade. Central in Brest.

Stade Francis-Le Blé opened in 1922 under the name Stade de l’Amoricaine. It was a relatively modest stadium that remained almost unchanged until a new main stand was built in 1982. At that time it also changed names to Stade Francis-Le Blé, after a former mayor of the city.

Restaurant
This restaurant is a must-go in Brest! It offers a very charming and comfortable setting, as well as an amazing selection of crepes and galettes. The kig-ha-farz cuisine is also something you don't want to miss - it's pure Breton tradition with the perfect flavor balance. Come and enjoy your meal in this delightful place, either in the garden or inside, in beautiful Brest!
Crepes outside on tables in the sun with good organic cider. Good selection of savoury and sweet pancakes. All very good. Afterwards you can walk down to the moulin blanc beach through the beautful botanical gardens.
James E — Google review
Lovely scenery and situated on the banks of a little stream. One would almost assume that this place would be good. It isn't. There were rude servers (especially the male server), flies all over the place and the wait for food was way too long. The food itself was okay, when the order was correct. The server treated us like we were a hassle and was not helpful at all. Snide comments to simple questions or request were very unwelcome. The toilets were disgusting! I'd rather have used a toilet at a festival. Such a pity as we had high hopes when we saw the place. My advise, get a sandwich and eat it along the banks of the stream.
Acfraenkel — Google review
A bit expensive for an average crepe. Dirty toilet and a not so friendly waitress. Pity because it’s in such a beautiful location.

Bar
Le Tour du Monde is a trendy and chic bar-restaurant located by the port, offering an accessible terrace and parking. It's known for serving high-quality moules-frites and seafood at reasonable prices. The establishment has a warm and lively atmosphere, attracting both locals and visitors. With its maritime decor, diverse drink menu, and various moules dishes priced under 12 euros, it has become a popular spot in Brest.
Great location, awesome food and good service. Would love to come again before I leave Brittany
Mete E — Google review
Tasty dish of mussels. Great staff. Nice atmosphere. The downside is that they don't serve bread to dip into the delicious gravy, if you're not a French fries' fan... Worthwhile revisiting, though!
Jorge M — Google review
We ordered moules frites à la crème and moules frites au bleu (you can choose if you want your dish to be accompanied by french fries or not, we chose the fries) and then we shared a dessert - Kouign-amann. Everything was good, the portions are big, the kouign-amann is a caramelised pastry, very buttery and sweet. If you are like us and feel full after such a big meal, but still want to try local treats, you can share a portion, it was more than enough for us. The service was fast. For dinner, it only serves food after 7 pm. It gets crowded pretty fast.
Teodora P — Google review
Popular great range of drinks including cocktails and great views over the marina (if you like boats). Bar staff seemed cold and a bit grumpy though.

I'm from New Zealand and recently stayed in Port de Plaisance. Staff at Le Tour du Monde were so friendly and welcoming, the vibes were cool, but mostly the moules et frites were super good. Merci beaucoup!

Great place with a great View over the port. Good for meeting with friends over drink and a good bite. It can get a bit noisy but just like a bar atmosphere where one should not mind the noise but rather enjoy the ambience.

Fish & chips restaurant
Nestled in a charming old fisherman's house along the picturesque banks of the River Elorn, My Fish: Authentic Fish & Chips is a seafood haven that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Since its opening in 2018 by Andy Nisgern, this delightful eatery has been dedicated to serving only fresh and homemade dishes. The menu boasts an array of delectable options, including mussels bathed in white wine sauce, crispy calamari fritters, and succulent grilled prawns.
Naturally skeptic, we didn’t expect much when we found this place…in a French mall parking lot. Were we about to relive our teenage dreams of being food court rats? Was this a Michael Scott and Sbarro pizza moment from The Office? The reviews were too stellar for us to turn back. Sure enough, the reviews don’t lie. The employee greeted us and explained we were about to have the best fish and chips in Brest, if not all of Brittany. We both ordered the Fish & Chips, made our orders a double (two pieces of fish), and went big on the chocolate moelleux for dessert. We were told every was made fresh, locally, and in shop. To our delight, the fish was tender and scrumptious. The fries were some of the best we’ve had all trip in France (and we’ve been here for over a month!). Worth the trip to the mall, and worth every euro we spent on it.

Sushi restaurant
Hinoki is a culinary gem nestled in the vibrant heart of Brest, France, where sushi lovers can embark on an extraordinary gastronomic journey. Helmed by the talented Xavier Pensec and his Japanese wife Mika, this restaurant beautifully embodies the spirit of Edomae sushi. Each piece crafted here is not only visually stunning but also bursts with flavor, reminiscent of Tokyo's finest establishments. The intimate and elegant ambiance at Hinoki enhances every dining experience, making it truly unforgettable.
Greatest sushi in France! He gets best fish from local much better than import from Japan.

And I loved it because in addition to the excellent food (nothing to do with classic Japanese restaurants, here it's something else!), there is the hypnotic spectacle of the preparation as well as the enriching exchanges on the culture around sushi. In summary, I can only highly recommend Hinoki, well done and thank you to them for what they do.

(Translated by Google) So no, gastronomy shouldn't cost this much. There are incredible restaurants, much better for €100 per person (the price of the Hinoki menu a few years ago, by the way). I don't know why prices here have gone up so much, but the food, while excellent, doesn't justify it at all. €165 now seems like a rip-off.

It’s funny, looking at the other reviews they say how great it is then post pictures of a totally empty dead environment. Party on !

Excellent place! Loved the street art exhibition and the little shops, like the second hand vintage shop close to the entrance. A big downside for me, thus the 3 stars, is that it's not pet friendly. Regarding the hateful ignorant comments, guys it's a C U L T U R A L C E N T E R, which means that they host exhibition and events, beside the permanent coffee, food and beer shops. That's why they have a site, so you can check what they're hosting every day and go see the exhibition or event that you're interested into.

It's a cool multifunctional space, refurbished from a naval factory but that's pretty much. There's an ice cream shop, some co-working spaces, a cinema and the ocean museum but apart from the last one there's not much to do. There're only a few posters concerning the history of the building so if you don't have something specific to do there it won't keep you busy for long.

Located within the historic Brest Castle, Musée National de la Marine offers a captivating journey through 17 centuries of maritime history, showcasing the strong connection between Brest and its naval heritage. The museum's impressive collection features model ships and naval installations dating back to 1748, providing insight into the city's shipbuilding traditions and ocean-going fleets. With breathtaking views of the bay and old city from the castle towers, a visit to this museum promises an enriching experience steeped in naval history.
Loved the museum. Lots of history from more than 600 years ago. I was expecting a little bit more maritime stuff. It is a beautiful castle with lots of interest things to see.

Part of the castle which you have to enter see review of castle. The rowing museum at Henley has more exhibits. Most of what you read you could get from a book. Worth visiting for the views of the town.
Ray D — Google review
Already in the 3rd century, some fortifications, a castellum, were constructed at this site. Later, this huge castle was built and expanded through the years. Occupied by the English during the Hundred Years War, sold by the English, it became an important Naval base and part still is and off limits to visitors. There is a well signed tour you follow through the castle. There are many galleries inside with the interesting history of the place. At the end of that tour, there are some beautiful large wooden sculptures
Seimen B — Google review
Lovely place to get history a lesson on the area of Brest. The Chateau covers a huge area and housed inside is the Marine Museum. Naval history at its best! Models of ships used throughout France's conquests and exploration expeditions are on display. Plenty to keep the kids engaged. The views of the bay are fabulous as well.
John C — Google review
Excellent maritime museum with loads of displays, models, av displays and audio guide in multiple languages. Just to note that only the entrance and first floor are fully accessible. And the tour goes between inside and outdoors...just in case you're visiting on a rainy day. Allow at least two hours for a visit to cover the full exhibition and not miss out on any time periods of the maritime story. We visited as a family with a 6 and 9 year old and they both really enjoyed it as well, especially since they got their own audio guides and could seek out the next number on the tour. The audio guide is an extra €2pp but worth it.

The Musée National de la Marine in Brest is another significant institution dedicated to France's maritime history. Located in the historic Château de Brest, this museum showcases the rich naval heritage of France through an impressive collection of artifacts, models, and artworks. Visitors can explore exhibitions that cover various aspects of naval history, including shipbuilding, naval battles, and exploration. The museum features detailed ship models, paintings, and various maritime instruments that illustrate the evolution of the French navy. One of the highlights is the stunning views of the harbor from the castle, adding to the overall experience. The museum often hosts temporary exhibitions, workshops, and educational programs, making it a dynamic place to learn about maritime culture. If you're in Brest, it’s a must-visit for anyone interested in naval history and the sea!

Oldest Maritime museum in Europe if not the world. Housed within a castle. Only 7euros for adults - excellent value. Good history of the castle and the dock areas in addition to the navy and the different types of ships. Get the audio guide which is free and comes in different languages.

Transportation
Tramways
Téléphérique De Brest is the first urban cable car in France, offering a unique way to cross the Penfeld River and enjoy stunning 360-degree views of the picturesque seaside port. It's an affordable activity as it's part of the public transport system, allowing riders to use a regular ticket for one hour on buses, trams, and the cable car. The experience provides access to a renovated site with delightful dining options like Fabrik.
We stumbled upon the cable car and it had a very short line. Staff was present to help make the self service ticketing very quick and easy. Views from the ride over the river we're beautiful and the large former ship repair sure that's now a local museum, arts, activities, food & bar area was perfect as a light rain passed thru the area for about an hour.
Pat B — Google review
Careful! This is a normal transport means for the locals. It is not a tourist attraction. Therefore you can expect it to be smelly and dirty but a very cheap way of getting a complete view of the naval base down below. You go to one of the points and buy your tickets there. Take a two way ticket and you can enjoy the view.
Dr. P — Google review
It's a nice ride, but only if you stand next to the window. Make sure you enter first, otherwise you are stuck in the middle of sweaty people and can't see anything. The ticket is easy to buy at the machine on the departure platform. 2,2 per person, kids till 6 for free. On the other side of the river you will arrive right to the Atelier Capucins, a former factory building. The area is enormous and gorgeous, but still has to find it's purpose, I think.
Daria S — Google review
You should experience this. Yes, it is a short trip but it supplies you a good view
T K — Google review
Must see Brest's cable car, it is a short a ride but very nice to try.

Fun little find to take our boy on, it isn't manned so can get very crowded on the cable car. But a lityle fun venture
Bekki H — Google review
I recommend to visit. Great view of the bridge and bay. Low cost (2.2 eur in two directions). Excellent view of the historical part of the city from a height.
Kirill G — Google review
4.50€ for a day ticket to ride the tram, and buses all over Brest to explore. Top it off with a (included in the day ticket) ride in the "Ski Lift" for a sky line view and the realisation that the return lift is heading straight for you - you have a few seconds to work out how they will pass each other before you descend!

Pont de Recouvrance is a striking vertical-lift bridge in Brest that spans the picturesque Penfeld River. Connecting the bustling rue de Siam to the historic quartier de Recouvrance, this bridge replaced a swing bridge destroyed during World War II. As you cross, take in the remarkable views of the naval port and its surroundings, including a castle and a modern cable car. The area also offers pedestrian-friendly pathways adorned with street art and access to underground bunkers.
The Recouvrance Bridge is a lift bridge that crosses the Penfeld, in Brest, Finistère. Dominating the arsenal and the military port. It was built in 1950 - 1954. The National Bridge, inaugurated on June 23, 1861, collapsed into the river in September 1944, during the Allied bombings for the liberation of Brest from German occupation. Post-war, after temporary solutions, such as the use by civilians of the Gueydon or Kervallon bridges. If you are visiting Brest, I advise you to visit this masterpiece.
Faly A — Google review
... I guess you either love concrete or not, personally I think its looks lovely & is actually "pretty" in a modern sense, its not your typical arched type bridge , but a sort of "lifting up vertically" one, if I get a chance to see it in "lifted up" mode I will definately take another picture...this night the sky and the lighting were in sync hense the photo ... nice plaza on both sides for sitting or (skating...)
Giles F — Google review
This could be just another bridge without its rich history and important location. All around it is evidence of Brest's military and naval importance since Roman times.

Remarkable views of the historical and working naval port. Castle on one side and the ultra modern cablecar on the other. Look down for the port action and explore the cliff-face for the entrances to the underground bunker in. Look out to the harbour to see the fleets of yachts competing. Some reasonable cafes and a couple of jolly pubs nearby.

Au Bureau is a unique and authentic pub that offers a great atmosphere with an Anglo-Saxon decor. Located at the harbor of Brest, it's a perfect place to enjoy throughout the day. While some visitors found the food to be average and slightly greasy, many appreciated the friendly staff and enjoyable ambiance. The restaurant offers decently priced meals and ABI beers in a lively setting by the marina.
I spent a nice energetic night in here. Lots of friendly servers. Our server talked English and was very helpful in deciding what to eat. I had the BBQ ribs with fries. They were delicious. I'm a rib and steak kind of person. The price was right and the food amount was also great for me.

Great location at the harbor of Brest. The atmosphere and interior of the restaurant is great. The owner seemed awesome and very friendly as well. Service however was very slow. Very friendly but slow. The food was nothing special. The Flammkuchen was burned, the canard croque very dry, the salad soggy. The drinks were very good. Overall a good experience.

Prepare yourself... went looking for a dry cleaner and landed up on a shopping spree 😂 Plenty of shops to visit. Some friendly, others not so much. You will encounter some language barriers, and some shopclerks won't even make the effort to try to help you or understand you even if you use an automatic translator... deer in headlights situation. So you just exit the shop... which is a pity. But, landed up purchasing some items of clothing which was good to get rid of the frustrated experience of the other stores. If there is a next, I'll just target specific stores and call it a day. Free parking. Good access.

The Bürger King in Brest has great service and good food. The greens in the salad were really fresh and yummy. It wasn't just iceberg--it was all sorts of good green leaves. The guy was super friendly and polite. I didn't want cheese in my Caesar salad, and he had them make me one without cheese They put pesto pasta in their Caesar salad for some reason and I took mine off which was no big deal. They also have their crispy chicken in their salad which I would normally love, but as I'm avoiding wheat, I took it off. I would say if you are OK with wheat products, it was a great salad. After I took off the wheat products, it was a great salad. The Caesar dressing was really good. The water was the French Vittel brand, the mineral water--I wanted no bubbles so this was perfect. The water was cold and delicious.

Brioche Dorée is a popular spot for a quick snack or coffee break. The service is efficient, making it a convenient choice for those on the go. Located in the historic Rallye shopping arcade, this establishment offers a variety of pastries and baked goods. While the designs may have an industrial touch, they are still enjoyable. Visitors appreciate the friendly staff and attentive service, with some even receiving complimentary bottled water with their order.
Nice coffee and food stop driving through France

(Translated by Google) I will not return to the one in the Kergaradec area We were repeatedly greeted poorly by a tall, blonde saleswoman. This lady is clearly tired of serving customers and makes it clear. Too bad, I really liked having snacks there with my family.

(Translated by Google) While passing through, I went to this restaurant for the first time. Fairly fast service. But disappointed by the variety of pastries which are really industrial. I only had one drink in the end. Friendly staff. (Original) De passage, je suis allée pour la 1ere fois dans ce restaurant. Service assez rapide. Mais déçue par la variété des pâtisseries qui font vraiment industrielles. Je n’ai pris au final qu’une boisson. Personnel aimable.

We hear a "I'm coming, ladies and gentlemen" but no one comes, even though there's giggling in the back kitchen and complaining from colleagues... (Original) 10 minutes d'attente au total. (Translated by Google) Service depending on the person. Eg: the orange juice machine works for acquaintances but not for others. Service without a smile and a sigh. Really disappointed with the experience, I felt uncomfortable. (Original) Service en fonction des têtes. Ex: la machine a jus d'orange fonctionne pour les connaissances mais pas les autres. Service sans sourire avec soupir .Vraiment déçue du passage, je me suis senti mal à l'aise .

(Translated by Google) There is often a choice, we like to have our snacks from time to time, the prices are reasonable, however the decor is not more modern, it is relatively damaged and old-fashioned. And it's a shame that you have to go to the gallery for the toilets, it's quite restrictive when you're alone with your children and you've started to taste.

(Translated by Google) Taking the order quickly, but hey I still find that the person is rather I ship customers quickly! But hey I can understand it... Otherwise, it’s a place where I like to come for a snack or a coffee break!

Restaurant
Le Clemenceau is a brasserie in Brest that offers traditional Breton and French cuisine, specializing in seafood, meat, and flammekueche. The restaurant is centrally located with extended opening hours, making it convenient for late-night dining. Guests have praised the delicious beef burgers, fresh seafood specialties, and attentive service from the friendly staff.
During Easter a lot of restaurants were closed or only available with reservation. We had no issues getting a nice table at Le Clemenceau. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. All courses were served promptly and everything was very delicious. Happy to come back.

Really an extraordinary experience. Started with a salmon pate, then a delicious gazpacho, tomatoes with mozzarella was really awesome, the bread and butter were incredible, the lamb and couscous were perfect, and the apple tarte was perfect!

Perfect restaurant. We had a pleasant evening with friendly service.

The place is easy to find, very central and the kitchen is open up to 24 h 👍🏻. I wanted something tiny at the late hour and this burger with finest beef, very delicious fried potato chips (the best I ever had) with a fantastic homemade mayonnaise (ordered just mayonnaise extra) together with a Belgium Affligem blond beer made my day! Knowing the very polite and open personnel, this place deserves more than the points shown here. See for yourself (fresh seafood is their speciality). 5 from 5 points for me today !

Hamburger restaurant
Roadside | Burger Restaurant Brest offers delectable burgers that are cooked to perfection, with a slight pinkness in the middle. The option to have them cooked to order sets them apart. While the cheesy chips may not be everyone's favorite, the classic chips are much more enjoyable. The food is scrumptious, and although there are only two vegan options available, it is still worth a visit for vegans.
A simple burger joint in the heart of Brest that does exactly what you’d hope for — and does it well. Ideal for a quick stop in the middle of the day, with food that’s surprisingly high in quality for a casual setting. Everything was fresh, well-prepared, and served promptly. The staff were attentive and pleasant, adding just the right touch of warmth to a straightforward, satisfying experience. Nothing fancy — just good food, good people, and no fuss!

Fine for a quick bite. Friendly cashiers. Tasty signature burger (Roadside burger). Still no paper towels (set de plateau papier) on trays, which is a letdown when you eat off directly from the tray. Great burger, though 😁 I must admit.
Jorge M — Google review
Pleasant and helpful staff, good food, especially for a late lunch after the Museum tour.
Steve H — Google review
Decent burgers, vegan options available! Service okay, not great. The interior is very nicely decorated, however, there was a stench that came from the basement (bad plumbing?) that took away a star from the ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I would have usually given.
Insa N — Google review
Very good taste of the veggy salade and crazy fries are awesome! However, it is still fast food and may be not so healthy. Price is correct.
Strannizza — Google review
Food is delicious. Only 2 vegan options available but still worth visiting for vegans. For non vegetarian, wide variety of food is available.

Everything was good, milkshake a little to sugar but also very good, quick delivery
