War memorial
Mémorial de Caen is a renowned center for history and peace in Caen, offering an in-depth exploration of World War II, the Normandy landings, and the Cold War. The museum provides a comprehensive overview of the battle of Normandy and delves into the personal experiences of individuals involved in or impacted by the war. Starting from the 1920s and extending through the Cold War era, it places World War II within its historical context.
Wonderful tour with Mario! Our group of 4 joined up with two others at the Memorial de Caen Museum. Our van was very comfortable with a wonderful driver, whose name sadly escapes me. It was a 5 hour trip, but you need it for this tour. Mario was very engaging and would call each of us by name to keep us on our toes. At each stop, he had an abundance of information and pictures to share. We had plenty of time to explore at each stop. When we arrived at the American cemetery, Mario moved us along so that we did not miss the lowering of the flag. We had a lot of time at the cemetery, which you need to soak in what was lost in order to keep us free. On the ride back to the museum, he continued to keep us engaged. Excellent trip with a superb team. A “must” tour when you’re in Normandy!

Our tour was just incredible! Ana was our guide and Sebastien was our driver. They were simply amazing and so knowledgeable. I thought I knew a lot about WWII until Ana shared some amazing stories and facts on our tour. Highly recommend!!!

It was amazing, well designed and very interesting. There’s also a bunker and a special price for students (€6). Many interesting displays are worth seeing, and I would definitely recommend visiting this place.

Fabulous museum. Excellent presentation of the historical path leading to WW2 and the subsequent events, not only in Europe but across the world. Balanced and even handed treatment of the role played by all sides (good and bad). Good blend of objects, images, videos and textual explanation. Perfect closure to a few days visiting the historical sites of the area. Highly recommended.
J V — Google review
This is “THE” Normandy to take. Private tour with our wonderful guide Lena. Very knowledgeable and so informative. If you don’t want headphones and don’t want to read every placard this is the best way to get the Normandy experience. Even if you are not a WWII buff or into WWII history you will really enjoy this tour. I highly recommend it.

A pure and epic monument to the battle of Normandy and more. If you're travelling to or through Caen, this is a must see for all. Beautiful grounds, incredible memorials and history.

This was a very enjoyable and informative tour of the D-Day landing beaches. Our guide, Oliver, had great knowledge and had a very interesting way of telling the vast history surrounding the whole area.

Nature & Parks
Gardens
Nestled in the northwest of Caen, Park of Colline aux Oiseaux, or Bird Hill, offers a delightful escape with its well-maintained grounds and captivating views of the city. The park boasts various attractions including a rose garden, playgrounds, picnic spots, mini-golf course, café and a small farm. Visitors can also explore nearby landmarks such as the Caen Memorial Museum and charming gardens at Le Jardin des Plantes.
A fantastic green space. We stopped by so the children could burn off some energy. While initially disappointed the playground was being renovated, it didn’t take long for them to take off and discover the different areas of the park. The bells, water features, rose gardens and maze were a hit before it rained.
Phil L — Google review
Very impressive stretch of gardens, fields, overlooks and trails. There are farm animals, mini golf, an ice cream shop and a small cafe in the park, even a par cour course for children. It's just lovely and I would highly recommend a visit.
Andre D — Google review
Free parc. Love the inclusive playground. Subtheme in little pieces of the parc like viking/asgard garden. Maze is fun to do with young kids. Everything was very neat.
Elle J — Google review
Peaceful and beautiful park with animals, flowers, roses, greenery, fountains and views. Car park right next to it, there is a mini golf and toilets also. We really enjoyed and think if we would like close by this place would be our reading, chilling spot for sure.
Julia H — Google review
Very nice large and green park. Playgrounds for small children are nice. Fountain area is very much worth a visit.
Maurice — Google review
Amazing parc for fresh air and a good walk ! Beautiful roses in the Roseraie and the maze is great.
Vish C — Google review
Great park to learn about the environmental issues. The whole park has been built on a waste dump site. Now, it is covered by trees, roses and vegetation, but below it is full of plastic bottles, glass, cans. There is a great demonstration area about the history, and a cross section of the waste below. Otherwise, the park offers a great panorama view on Caen, has a little farm with animals, unfortunately no direct access to the animals for feeding and touching. There is a nice playground, and several tracks for walking. The car traffic nearby is high at one side of the park, but inside it ok. There no protected bike lanes to reach it, but at least there is a bike parking in front of it. If you are visiting Caen as a tourist, I think this is a must see experience to learn about current environmental issues. And a great place for children to run around, play, and see some animals.
Oliver K — Google review
Hugely impressed with this park. Hadn't realised it's origins until I was reading about how the site was previously the council dump. Absolutely worth a visit with the kids. Many different things to see... including dipping your feet into the fountain to cool down. The views are great and the gardens are very well maintained.

The restaurant Le Patio offers a delicious and affordable meal in a warm atmosphere. The cuisine is based on fresh and seasonal products, with homemade pasta being a specialty. Groups can come for business lunch or leisurely dessert degustations. The waitstaff are efficient and the coffee is always hot, but the service could be more leisurely.
Great value for money. Good food. Even better desserts! Staff here were amazing.

(Translated by Google) The delicious smell of pizza greets us, and just from that, we know the taste will be there. And indeed, a beautiful, generous pizza, made with quality ingredients (premium ham, cherry tomatoes, "real" tomatoes, green olives, etc.), expertise, and passion. I really enjoyed it. Excellent value for money. Pizza lovers will definitely come back. A simple welcome. A small, basic space to eat in (but I got takeout). Easy access and parking right next door. Thanks for the taste buds! Je me suis régalée. Excellent rapport qualité prix. Les amateurs y reviendront avec certitude. Accueil simple. Un petit espace sommaire pour manger sur place (mais j'ai pris à emporter). Facile d'accès et stationnement tout à côté. Merci pour les papilles !

I had a fantastic experience at this restaurant! The food was top-notch and the service was exceptional. The planned menu with wine is a must-try, and definitely worth the price. The staff were very knowledgeable about the dishes and made sure that everything was explained thoroughly. The atmosphere is pleasant and welcoming, making it a great choice for special occasions or a night out. Although parking can be a bit tricky, it's well worth the effort. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an unforgettable dining experience in Caen.

A simply amazing experience! We had the 4 course "surprise" menu and every single item (including the amuse bouche) was a memorable. The locally sourced lamb course was both excellent and very creative as was the fish (lieu jaune prepared in a sushi style with courgette sauce and quinoa). Make no mistake, you are at the frontiers of taste here. Add in the flawless and very welcoming service, the excellent wine list, and the beautifully restored dining room and you have one of the best addresses in all Normandy (and perhaps in all of France). Very much recommended. We hope to return -- often.

This is a "must go" place. We chose the planned menu with wine, which came out about 60Euro. 5 on the menu but it's actually 7 courses. AMAZING food, and the staff are so wonderful. The chef made sure that the food came out right in time so that we have a steady flow and none got cold, etc. For the price, the menu is way worth more than its costs!

Caen Castle, constructed on the remains of a fortress by William the Conqueror, is among Europe's largest medieval enclosures. It served as a gathering place for the Dukes of Normandy and Kings of England and was a key stronghold during the Hundred Years War. The castle now houses two museums that offer an in-depth look into Normandy's history, while its ramparts provide breathtaking views of the city.
Free entrance, big park inside where is it allowed to eat and drink. You can climb the ramparts and enjoy a beautiful view of the city . Highly recommended for Medieval II Total war fans 😎
Salaheddine M — Google review
Not much of a castle but mostly ruins and some wall and courtyard structures still standing along with some minarets. A nice place for a hangout and picnic during the nice weather! This was a quick visit and free as well.
Chanakya — Google review
Inside, there are several playgrounds for children and a nice park with benches where you can relax and rest. Within the walls, you’ll also find a café and a museum, and you can walk along the entire rampart. From the tower, you can enjoy a wonderful view of Caen from above.
Salomé — Google review
A wonderful experience which is free. The castle grounds are extensive and the view from the towers is spectacular. There are several art installations in the grounds including a Rodin. A good shop and also a nice restaurant
Neil B — Google review
This historic site is really interesting with it having a medieval castle ( with its walls still being mostly intact) and a museum to look around. I really enjoyed looking around and being able to have a first person experience with one of Caens most historic landmarks. The views of the city below are beautiful with you being able to see miles in every direction. Would definitely recommend for lovers of history.
Connor C — Google review
I don't know who was in charge of placing the museum entrance to the other side of the main building where you can't find it, not too smart. I mean seriously how much income are you losing because you're hiding THE FRONT DOOR!? I was ready to buy a ticket when I entered the building that looks like it should be the entrance to the museum, but I was abruptly brushed off with "Go to the other entrance on the other side." I looked for it, I could not find it. So I kept my money in my pocket and look at all the ancient buildings and the un-celebrated RODIN modestly hanging out by the path. I had just paid a lot to see his creations at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and it was awesome to see Rodin's Working Man sculpture right there out in the open. The 2000 year old buildings were great and the many benches and wide Open spaces were relaxing as a public park. Mid afternoon, there was a cafe but it wasn't open. If I were the Mairie of Caen paying these people, I wouldn't. Their incompetence and lack of people skills is costing money that you could use to pay better employees.
Lauren S — Google review
Large castle on a hill in the centre of the city. Nice to walk around (free entry and open until 22:30). There are some museums inside as well.

We enjoyed our visit here and recommend it.

Gorgeous park, free entrance! There are a lot of spots where you can do a little picnic, or to sit and enjoy the peace. Incredible enough, at the heart there is a very big greehouse which contains tropical plants from different regions. It is divided in different sections and these sections are regulated independently in heat and humidity. (Make sure you can easily remove your jacket...you have been warned....). All of this hidden behind the simple name: Gardens of Caen. Very much recommend!! **Locals: there were many adults and children there, so it must be a favourite educational spot.

St. Peter's Catholic Church is a remarkable landmark nestled in the heart of Caen, dating back to the 13th century. With its intricate facade and recently restored spire, this church stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Visitors can explore its stunning interior adorned with beautiful sculptures and stained glass windows that tell stories of yesteryears. The church has undergone significant restoration after sustaining damage during World War II, making it an even more poignant site for reflection.
Whilst visiting Caen, I found this Church to be one of the centrepieces that standout. You can often see the church from a variety of directions and it can be used to help you navigate back to a central place. Building wise the Catholic Church has great levels of detail and masonry to behold, it’s worth looking around even just the outside of the building to spot some of the buildings finer details!

The Museum of Fine Arts, Caen is located within the historic Ducal Castle of Caen, a sprawling complex that also houses the Museum of Normandy and other cultural attractions. Meat dish restaurant
Bœuf & Cow is a vibrant and contemporary eatery that takes pride in serving up delicious steaks and burgers crafted from carefully sourced local meats. Nestled in the heart of Caen, this restaurant boasts an inviting atmosphere with elegant yet simple decor, complemented by stunning views of St. Pierre Church. Diners can indulge in a variety of meat dishes, including succulent Normandy beef options like beef pie, rump steak heart, and irresistible tartare.
Simply great!!!! We found this restaurant by accident. And what a lucky “accident”! The food is great! Probably one of the best steaks that I’ve been eating in Europe. The service was exceptional (friendly, welcoming and fast)!!! AXEL (our waiter) was always around, noticing straight away if we need something.

Really great service & attentive staffs. Very good view where we sat. Food was great, dessert great. Can’t fault them. Recommend bavette d'aloyau and camembert.
P. D — Google review
The reviews did not lie! Great place for steak and one of the best Steak Tartare's I've had and I have them all over the place travelling. Service was really good for us and service charge is not added on the bill as it's wrapped up in the menu but you can leave a tip your discretion ( we did as the service was great). We were in Caen for 24 hrs and went back for lunch the next day just for the tartare ! Coming from Guernsey, we found the prices very reasonable.
Sarah ( — Google review
We absolutely loved our dinner at Beouf & Cow in Caen! Booking a table online was quick and easy (I’d definitely recommend doing so), and as a really nice touch, the restaurant even phoned to reconfirm on the day - in English too so you don't have to worry that you regret taking German instead at school. It’s a stylish, modern steakhouse with options for every budget. whether you’re after an affordable cut or want to splash out on the wagyu or even Kobe. The menu is extensive, and if you love beef, you’ll be spoilt for choice. A small note for fellow English speakers: the English menu is written with a lot of American phrasing, which doesn’t always translate perfectly for other English speakers - we found ourselves glancing at the French menu with a smile to double check what was what 😂 We started with a selection of sharing tapas so everyone could try a bit of everything. They arrived beautifully on a wooden plancha with bread. Highlights were definitely the beef tartare (an absolute musttry) and the dauphinoise balls with curry sauce... Perfect for us as big curry lovers. For mains, we ordered a range of steaks - ribeye, filet, onglet, and sirloin, and every single one was cooked perfectly. (Tip: in France, if you usually order medium rare, you might want to go one level up, as steaks here tend to be served a touch pinker than elsewhere.) I had the onglet, which is one of my favourite cuts but rarely found on menus, and it was incredible! Robust, beefy flavour and so good. Desserts were just as good, the fruit with apple sorbet was refreshing after a rich meal, while the table side caramelised crème brûlées stole the show with a bit of theatre. Still being talked about. Drinks were also delish with a wide wine list ranging from affordable to indulgent. We especially loved their twist on a Moscow Mule, made with calvados instead of vodka - delicious and very Normandy! Service throughout was excellent. I know some reviews mention brusque service, but we felt it was simply cultural differences in directness; for us, everything was warm, attentive, and very professional. If you’re in Caen, you really should make time for Beouf & Cow. Whether you go for the set menu at lunch or dinner, or treat yourself to wagyu or Kobe, you’ll have a fantastic experience. Highly recommended!

Weekend in Caen with friends, we visited this place on strength of reviews and we weren’t disappointed! The food was beautifully cooked delicious cuts of the best steaks around. The staff friendly and really great service. The price, extremely reasonable for the quality and size of offer. It was so good we immediately booked in for the next night! The mixed planche of steak was a favourite, but the à la carte steaks were also amazing! Highly recommended!

If you like beef, you should go to that place. It's a cozy restaurant located in the center of Caen. They have an attractive two- and three-course lunch and dinner menu. It's great value for money and worth a stop :) Make sure to reserve a table, as it's always packed.

We had an excellent experience at Boeuf and Cow. We had booked for July but unfortunately had to cancel due to illness so I was delighted to have another opportunity. We received a warm welcome from all the staff and were seated promptly by a window as I had requested. It was a beautiful view although a rainy evening. We chose the Menu de Terroir at 35 Euros for three courses. There was plenty of choice. Both starters were delicious and unusual. Then we both had the bavette steak cooked au point. The meat was tender and juicy, the frites perfectly cooked and the sauces delicious. For dessert I chose tarte tatin. I asked the waiter if it was well caramelised and he said ‘a little’. I was surprised that it was delivered flaming and obviously that added to the caramelisation. Excellent. My husband chose the chocolat mi-cuit and that was runny in the centre, just perfect. All in all an excellent meal to round off our lovely trip to France.

Nestled in the historic Vaugueux district, Le P’tit B is a delightful culinary gem that captivates visitors with its inventive and high-quality dishes. Set within a charming 17th-century half-timbered building adorned with stone walls and wooden beams, this restaurant offers an inviting atmosphere perfect for enjoying regional cuisine. Diners can savor exquisite options like braised chuck paired with creamy polenta or duck breast complemented by grapes and mushrooms.
Fabulous food. The John Dory was out of this world. Beautiful outdoor setting. Interior was beautiful too. Service was a bit confusing as we asked for the check from 3 different people before they told us to go inside to pay.

Really enjoyed this restaurant. Good food and English-speaking, attentive/fun staff. It’s on Rue du Vaugueux à Caen which is the medieval street full of eateries by the castle. We discovered the owners used to run one of the restaurants opposite which we had eaten at a few years ago.

It’s rare for me to write a review. Either something went terribly wrong or wonderfully right. In this case it’s happily the latter. Hats off to this small restaurant and the team that took care of my wife and me. From the greeting, the ambiance, to the exceptional service to the intriguing menu, within French traditional cuisine. The fresh produce was thoughtfully blended to allow the subtile qualities of each ingredient shine through. A nicely accompanied wine list and option of pairing made the meal an exceptional experience. In France, there’s no lack of great cuisine but great service can be hard to find without a Michelin Star and the price tag to go with it. Congratulations to a great team! Chapeau!!

The best dinner place in Caen!! Very busy but the staff is very nice and good in English, also quick. The food was excellent! I ordered pork cheeks and my bf ordered salmon - we loved it! Because the portions are not very big we ordered a dessert with it. Visiting this restaurant was our best decision for the evening.

If you want to have THE ABSOLUTE BEST food experience in Caen, then you DEFINITELY should try this restaurant. The food was just amazing! It just shows what you can do with food when you take it as an art work. I had salmon with dill sauce (twice in two days!!!!) and it was just simply wonderful. All the flavours were just so well put together and all of them were really delicate and they just complimented each other very very well. And not even mentioning the staff, they are very, very kind and nice. (And they speak english very well aswell :D) Overall, 11/10 in my opinion. Definitely would recommend. Merci!

We were able to reserve table in short notice and we were surprised to have such delightful dinner course in city of Caen. Ambiance was quiet but no strict dress code, which we liked as a group of visitors/travelers. Staff was professional and great with English, and we had no problem informed about each course and their wine. Wine pairing was awesome, complimented well on each course. Their seafood courses were beyond amazing, I still crave their desserts 2 weeks later. If I ever go back, I would love to revisit!

I have mixed feelings. Food is good, with a mixture of flavours, tastes and sense emotions. We didn't get the full menu so we probably missed some bits. Service and wine was... Strange. It was not easy to know eventually if the wine was the one we ordered. On the bad side, reading the chef self description in the bathroom was not helping at all (both location and text) and, definitely, is overpriced. So it's a good concept with a little bit more of selfishness than desired.

Excellent experience at l'Accolade at the end of July. We ordered the 7 mouvements menu and it was absolutely delicious from beginning to end. The atmosphere is quite relax and calm (understand : not noisy which is a massive plus). Impeccable service and top notch dishes. Lovely associations and creativity. Stunning plates to look at as well! It was colourful, tasty, classy and not over the top which is always appreciated. Thank you!
Flo D — Google review
We could find a reservation at short notice and we’re delighted to have chosen l’accolade. The six-course menu was delicate, balanced, diverse, and delicious. The menu is blind so you won’t ow what you’ll be eating. We’ve added a photo of ours which will give you a some idea of what to expect-but it really depends on the ingredients of the day. Come with an open mind and you’ll leave having tasted new, interesting flavours and ingredients. Service was excellent 👌🏽 the portion sizes were generous for a chic restaurant. We left feeling satisfied and very full. TOP!
Kanika S — Google review
The food was inconsistent. Many courses of the 7 lacked true flavor. The one excellent course was the beet salad. Meat course cold and chewy. White beans had thought dried mushrooms instead of succulent ones. Bread and butter were fab but that does not make a great meal Wonderful use of unusual herbs however adds the third star

Passing through the city I decided to enter the restaurant. I was very happy with the choice. The service is magnificent, dishes with excellent presentation and delicious flavors. The place is set in an interesting structure and is cozy and cute. The service was very attentive and great although it was quite hard to get attentions once the food is served but more due to the number of guests. The food was classic French with some hints of experiment - they were cooked well.

A wonderful meal in charming surroundings furnished with vintage pieces and menu chalk boards. The host was very friendly and we had genial conversations in Franglais! He speaks very good English and was quick to spot our Nationality as we mangled our French vocab. The lamb shank (souris d'agneau) was very good, the bread served with it was the most delicious I've had in five years of living in France. Our desserts were delectable. Very good prices too, our meal didn't break the bank. Fixed menu plats between 18 and 22 euros for two courses and a full choice menu with everything below 25 euros. We parked in the cleanest underground car park ever, with bright lights and music playing, just around the corner, and the ticket was just 1.50e for the evening. A lovely experience in Caen, highly recommended.

I recently dined at Mooky's in Caen and had an exceptional experience. The atmosphere was fun and unique, with vintage furnishings and chalkboard menus. The staff was knowledgeable and attentive, providing excellent service throughout the evening. I particularly enjoyed the gratin de raviole and tataki de thon, both of which were flavorful and expertly prepared. For dessert, I opted for the gourmand, a small version of four desserts off the menu, and was not disappointed. The prices were reasonable, with a fixed menu starting at 18 euros for two courses and a full choice menu with everything under 25 euros. The restaurant also sells charcuterie and cheese, adding to the French culinary experience. The owner was friendly and spoke perfect English, making it a great option for tourists. Overall, I had a fantastic evening at Mooky's and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Caen.
Alessandra B — Google review
We'd been up since 3am, traveling in from another country, and were looking forward to an early dinner at this highly recommended restaurant. Although the place had many open tables, the matre'd looked us up and down and asked if we had reservations. We did not. "Not possible." Tomorrow night? "Not possible." The look we got was, "it would never be possible." We were dressed casually from our travels, but not slovenly. Dress, Americans, lack of ability to speak French, you pick the reason for the snub. I can't review the food or atmosphere, but I can definitely review the service.

L'Abbaye-aux-Hommes, also known as the Abbey of Saint-Etienne, is a remarkable 11th-century Romanesque abbey in Caen, built by William the Conqueror. It was constructed using light yellow Jurassic limestone called Caen stone and is considered a prime example of Romanesque architecture. The abbey now serves as part of the City Hall and is famous for being the burial site of William the Conqueror.
A Majestic Step into History at Abbaye aux Hommes – Caen’s Hidden Gem I visited the Abbaye aux Hommes today, and it completely exceeded my expectations. From the moment I stepped into the courtyard, I was struck by the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning architecture. The abbey is beautifully preserved, and its mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles makes every detail worth admiring. Whether you’re interested in medieval history, architecture, or just want a beautiful and serene place to walk through, the Abbaye aux Hommes is a must-visit in Caen. Highly recommended!

We visited this abbey on our way from Étretat to Mont Saint-Michel Castle — it’s definitely a place worth including in your Normandy itinerary. Entrance to the abbey is paid, but access to the church itself is free. The church is located to the right of the main entrance. Parking is convenient — right under the abbey.
Julia — Google review
One of the must-see sites in Caen is the Abbaye aux Hommes, a former men’s abbey with centuries of history and an example of the blend of Norman Romanesque and early Gothic architectural styles. This abbey, founded in the 11th century, is one of the main attractions of the city of Caen and functions as a parish church. Part of the abbey has been transformed into a museum where visitors can learn about the history and architecture of the complex. The abbey, like several other historic buildings, is part of the campus of the University of Caen, creating a blend of history and modern academic life. The abbey also houses the tomb of William the Conqueror, making it a place of pilgrimage for historians and tourists interested in medieval history.
Kate S — Google review
Come here as early as you can and allow 4 hours for the visit if you want to read every sign. Its absolutely worth it as you learn so so much. You learn about William the Conqueror, about Caen in Dday, about the high school that was once here. You can see the ruins from the bombings in the nearby buildings across the Abbaye. Lots of information provided and difficult to imagine what was once happening here.

The Musée de Normandie, located within a historic castle, showcases a permanent collection of Roman artifacts, stone-age helmets, and exhibits detailing the local life's history. The site also features significant architectural elements such as ramparts, gates, and vestiges of the great keep that bear witness to its eventful past. Following extensive redevelopment efforts, the castle now offers new viewpoints over the town from restored rampart belvederes and unveils hidden secrets in the Rampart Rooms.
A museum inside the castle grounds, covering multiple time periods in Normandy. It was an interesting smaller museum. Which unusually for France, has multiple displays in English.

The exhibition is not foreign tourist friendly. The information about the paintings and other things are all in French! I understand that museum is located in France. But do you expect that every tourist coming to Caen for a couple of days who wants to learn about French history, culture and art will know French language?
Piotr A — Google review
A solid, no-nonsense museum about Normandy’s history and culture. Lots of artifacts from prehistory to modern times, but nothing that’ll leave you stunned. More of a quiet detour than a must-see — great if you’re into history, or just need a break from the crowds. Nice enough, just don’t expect fireworks.

At first glance, it looks like a regular church. Then you notice it’s leaning — thanks to the lovely idea of building on marshy ground. Normandy’s answer to Pisa, just without the crowds. Inside it’s simple but atmospheric, with modern stained glass giving it an unexpected mood. It’s not a tourist magnet, and maybe that’s why it feels so genuine. And hey, even if the architecture doesn’t wow you, the tilt probably will.

The Leaning Church of Caen! How on earth is this Church not falling down? Its clearly a significant lean to the structure: and its a LARGE structure. It almost looks like it started to lean during construction, since many pillars correct the lean a bit up their length. Amazing!

I recently acquired an original drawing by Samuel Prout, was looking at the street view and the images posted and realised why the beautiful buildings were no longer there. Destroyed in World War 2. The Abbey of Sainte-Trinité is an 11th century monastery located in Caen, known for its arcaded courtyard and as the final resting place of Queen Mathilda. Commissioned by William the Conqueror and his wife to appease religious concerns about their marriage, the abbey has a fascinating history. The building was renovated in 1990 and now serves as the provincial government's office while also being open to visitors.
It's an interesting historical place. Free entry. There are a few expositions inside. There are free tours in French, very informative. It is recommended for visiting to touch the story.

Very early Churvh established by William the Conqueror because he married his cousin, Matilda ( 1st cousin??? Not sure): the Pope listened to the politics, and decided it was a good time to show his Strength and threatened to Annull the Marriage. So William, being Saavy, build 2 Churches ( Hommes & Dames) and forced the Pope to Honor the marraige. The pope didn't realize this Church & Hommes would last over 1000 years & solidify the Memory of Brave Will the Conqueror, while few remember the name of that Pope whats-his-face. Well Done Will!

Beautiful Location that is enriched in authentic paints, murals and sculptures. Abbaye aux Dames de Caen was peaceful and a location you can visit to reflect. The architectural detail is fabulous. Would recommend visiting if you go to Caen.

Stunning. A must-see if you are in Caen. Don't miss the adjacent gardens, which are also free to enter. There is a large cedar tree, and great views from here over the city. When I visited there was an art exhibition on in the Abbey. Part of the Abbey dates back to 1060.

Lovely church and moving to see the tombstone of Mathilda, wife of William the Conqueror.

Despite the crowds, this is so worth it. We did not opt for the tablets for our guided tour. The tablet offers very nice extras, such as simulations of what the room you are in would have looked like, but when touring the abbey, I thought it a pity that most visitors were checking the tablet rather than taking in the experience.

Une Cuillère Carrée is a charming restaurant that exudes a passion for food. The sea bream with grilled zucchinis, fennel cream, and saffron emulsion was a standout main course, while the grilled figs with nuts crumble and amaretto foam made for an exquisite dessert. The attention to detail in both dishes reflects the chef's skill. Additionally, the staff is friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive dining experience.
Located in the harbor area, quite close to the castle and the city center, this little gem offers 2 différents three course meal menus, the regular one at 45€ and the menu of the day at 32€. The great surprise? You can mec them up! And make your own menu at a fair price! The service, the food and the vibe were great! I’ll definitely come back if I’m around!

The food is amazing, however they couldn’t find our reservation even though we got an email. And their English was not great. We asked what the deal for €26,90 was and she just pointed at the options. But when we got the bill, they said that these options were not part of the deal and we paid almost double. They were not nice about it either. The atmosphere upstairs is not as nice as down stairs so I would recommend asking for a table downstairs. I would not return, but the food was great. To respond to the restaurants response; No she did not, her English was not sufficient I am afraid. We told her we wanted the deal and pointed it out on the menu board. She nodded and took our order. The price came as a total surprise to us.

LE BISTROT 102 in Caen is a delightful and cozy bistro that offers a warm and inviting atmosphere. The owners, Christelle and Cedric, are friendly and accommodating, making it a must-visit spot. The bistro prides itself on using fresh, seasonal produce to create an exceptional menu with a focus on quality over quantity. Visitors can expect a small but impressive selection of dishes that showcase the best of local ingredients.
A highlight of our trip to Caen and an absolute must visit! Can honestly say this is one of the best meals I have had in my life. Very cozy atmosphere, and the couple who own the place are very friendly and welcoming.

One of the best meals that my wife and I have had in a long time and a very pleasant dining experience. I really prefer small restaurants and this is one of the best. There are only a few tables and little staff in addition to the owners. They do a fantastic job. You will not be disappointed. Additionally, the menu is very vegetarian friendly and excellent which is a feat in France.

I can’t say enough great things about this restaurant. My boyfriend and I visited Caen and had the hardest time deciding where we should eat. After some research, we finally stumbled across this place and I’m so glad that we did. This cozy restaurant is run by two people who are passionate in their profession, and it shows! I started with a delicious local Normandy beer and the charcuterie board. For the main dish, I had La Végétarienne and it was simply amazing. Fresh, local food that is prepared with care and intention. And the food is very copious! My only regret is that I didn’t have enough room for dessert. ;) The service was excellent - we experienced a very warm welcome and the servers have an excellent level of English. This place deserves so much more recognition, but for now, it’s the best kept secret in Caen.

Amazing restaurant. We had the menu saveur with the paired wines and every course was delicious. The staff were attentive but we never felt rushed (we were in there nearly 3 hours). It's not a cheap place but that's no surprise with the quality of the food and the restaurant as a whole.

First of all, the staff was very friendly and helpful in explaining the different types of tasting menu. We chose the Incognito Tasting Menu which was interesting. Quality of ingredients and flavor were great. It fell a bit flat on the crab meat dish, but everything else was fantastic. Interior feels a bit dated and might need a little bit of refreshing. Over-all, a wonderful experience.

Extremely friendly and Md made us feel most welcome Food was delicious my wife had the excellent vegetarian menu while I had the a La carte the scallops were stunning Would certainly revisit if in Caen again
Kevin K — Google review
Honestly, the experience was quite disappointing. The dessert was excellent but the appetizers were far too salty and the entree of white fish was really bland and served with cold vegetables. The main of St. Jacques was well cooked but nothing exciting. The service was smothering at times and the waiters visited our table almost every 5 minutes which killed the atmosphere and interrupted our conversations.... at one point I was still chewing the food in my mouth when she removed my plate & then she stood there waiting. My partner still had his appetiser on the plate & was chewing, she said "I'm waiting to take your plate" so he was forced to take the remaining food in his hand. Not really good service and far too efficient, just felt like even though the restaurant was quiet, they were in a rush to get people out. I'm surprised this is a star restaurant and would not return.
Shani B — Google review
Completely deserves its Michelin star. We took the surprise menu on the first evening and were so pleased that we came back few days later with family for the lunch menu. Innovative dishes, excellent cooking. You can see the "brigade" at work behind a glass window. The only down side is the dark design of the dining hall...but it is purely subjective

A striking ruin right in the city center, often overlooked by tourists. It deserves more attention — its roofless Gothic shell has a haunting charm. Bombed in 1944, it now stands as a silent witness to war and the scars history refuses to hide. You can’t go inside, but even from the outside, it leaves an impression. This busy burger restaurant located on the edge of Caen city centre serves up delicious, juicy burgers with lots of toppings. The burgers are perfect for a quick meal and the staff are very friendly.
The food here is so good. We went twice in a week because the burger and crispy chicken were so delicious. The burger with goat cheese is addicting. If you get the fries with cheese, we think the one with raclette better than with cheddar. Staff is nice also and they have more seating inside.

The staff was very friendly and attentive. We got our food very quick, it wasn’t over a 7 minute wait. I ordered a rare ginette burger. It was delicious. The bread was soft and it didn’t get soggy, the tomatoes and onion were very tasty and had a perfect texture, the meaty was also very tasty and tender. The fries weren’t anything special, but were still very good with the sauce. As for the atmosphere, the music choices were incredible, everything was very clean and the temperature was perfect. I really enjoyed my stay and would recommend this humble little burger restaurant to anyone that is near the area :)

Delicious!! These were super tasty burgers, great menu to choose from and meal deal available. My husband had the double smash burger and was very complimentary, I had the goats cheese burger which was really nice! We were feeling greedy and had extra fries with Raclette cheese on top - recommend! Looks small from the outside but plenty of tables and seats available inside. They gave us an English menu which was fab! You order at the desk at the front and we didn't have to wait long at all for food! Great experience, would 100% recommend for lunch or dinner

Great wood fired pizza with lots of choices of toppings. The owner was really friendly and accommodated us even though we arrived before opening time as he could see we had two very hungry children! Half pizzas available are great for kids, too.

Good food and big portion (even a 1/2 pizza is not small). Very friendly and versatile staff - one man band being the waiter, chef and cashier. That's the reason why it is not 5 stars yet, as at least one more staffer has to be added to reduce all the waiting time. But on the whole it's highly recommended.
Fifi T — Google review
Proper Italian pizzas, dough is the way it should be, cooked in wood oven which is a main thing, Desserts too home made fresh, we had excellent dinner there 👌

Cute, welcoming pizzeria serving delicious, crispy pizza. Several pizza options. I went with the 1/2 Margherita pizza. The tomato sauce was fresh and the black olives were very tasty. Service was very friendly. Great place for a quick bite.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Very friendly service and warm hospitality. The chef, who is also the pizzaiolo, is extremely kind and passionate. The pizzas from the wood-fired oven are simply outstanding. Portions are very generous, and the antipasti for two was absolutely amazing. Fresh, delicious, and highly recommended!

Day 5

Off the beaten path
For day 5, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Pop Corn Labyrinthe CAEN (Frénouville) - Labyrinthe Géant de Maïs. Not quite as popular as Mémorial de Caen, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 7 hours.

Well worth a visit. Saw lots of families there, but we visited with older teenage children who also enjoyed the maze. There's 6 challenges to play throughout the maze where as a family you can get quite competitive. Lots of picnic tables in the central area where you can take a break half way through which was nice.

Catholic church
Nestled in the charming old town of Caen, the Église Saint-Sauveur de Caen is a captivating treasure that often goes unnoticed by visitors. Dating back to the 12th century, this historic church showcases stunning Gothic architecture and exquisite stained-glass windows that leave onlookers in awe. Its unique features include two adjoining naves and a mysterious spiral staircase leading to nowhere, adding an element of intrigue to your visit.
What a nice little church and didn't even expect it with the shops while exploring this part of the town. Loved the different style of layout and having church bells right there inside to have a nice look. It's a great place to escape the bustling crowds and have a personal moment with the bonus of seeing some historic beauty.

We were just walking by, saw a church on the square, and figured — let’s take a look. And… it was completely empty. Inside? Magical atmosphere, silence, beautiful light… and not a soul in sight. Pretty surprising for a place where locals once swore allegiance to kings and big shots of the time gathered. Now you could hear a wafer drop. Maybe it just needs a sign: “This way to peace and quiet.” :)

The service was outstanding, but specially the young brunette waitress who really did an effort to explain to me every dishes she served in English (I don't know French). We had de "I trust the cheff menu" and it was delicious; however, what we enjoyed the most was the dessert, a litchi fruit served on a spoon that melted in your mouth with an explosion of flavors. The rest of the menu was good, even risky at some points, but not so surprising. It has to be said that we left completely full. Overall, it was a great experience: good food and excellent service.

At Burger Street, you will find a selection of burgers and fries that are slightly more high-quality compared to other street food restaurants. The ingredients are skillfully combined, resulting in well-balanced flavors. The restaurant uses freshly baked bread and homemade fries, ensuring the use of fresh products. Despite the fries being softer than usual, they are still enjoyable. The staff is friendly and can speak English, making it convenient for international visitors.
Fantastic!!!! Could not recommend more! The burgers were honestly the best I have ever eaten! So well seasoned, the sauce amazing, the patty sublime! You must get the curry and pineapple sauce for your fries! But the best part of Burger Street is the chef/waiter. He is so kind and welcoming! Me and my partner came back 3 nights in a row whilst visiting Caen. 10/10

We came here bc several reviews stated this place is top 10 best burgers in Caen. It didn’t disappoint us at all. The owner/chef was one of the friendliest individuals you’ll meet in all of France. His english is amazing and his passion for his food is palpable. The burgers are top notch even by American standards. Fries are subtly sweet and salty. Buns are fresh and crispy and the burger patty crispy on the outside and soft but firm in the middle. He cuts all the vegetables by hand per order. Service might be a little slower than we are used to but thats because he was a one man army behind the counter doing all jobs with an infectious smile. Highly recommend 10/10.

Absolutely incredible. We went three nights in a row for dinner because the burgers were so good. The owner is an absolute delight, a bubbly and charismatic man who made the experience so much better. We will be recommending Burger Street to everyone we know. I hope the owner knows how special he is and how good his burgers are!
