Gateshead in 4 days

If you only have 4 days to spend in Gateshead, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Gateshead attracts visitors with striking modern landmarks such as Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North and the riverside concert hall commonly known as Sage Gateshead. The town’s Quayside, facing Newcastle across the Tyne, is linked by distinctive bridges including the tilting Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Art lovers are drawn to the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, housed in a converted flour mill with expansive river views. Regenerated industrial areas, galleries and event spaces give the town a strong cultural focus within the wider Tyneside region.
With favorites like The Broad Chare, Central Arcade, and Eldon Square, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Fattoush Lounge and Three Bulls Heads so you can get the best taste of Gateshead while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Had a great day at Metrocentre Gateshead — loads of shops, plenty of food spots, and even a cinema and arcade for a bit of fun. Big, clean, and easy to get around. Perfect spot for a relaxed shopping and leisure day out. Definitely worth a visit!

What a brilliant mall, I was shocked how large it was when I went inside and how many brands there are. Really good selection, excellent place to shop. Parking was especially easy and I liked the colour coding. However we found it hard to find toilets, signed posts were not clear and we walked a long time just trying to find it. Needs much clearer sign posts.

Travelled down from alnwick whilst on holiday, had two bored teens and a rainy day to try and entertain. Really easy to get to but we hadn't really taken into account the sheer size of this place. Totally overwhelmed, plus side it's free parking, we arrived at 11.30 and left after 4pm as we were totally shopped out. My hubby and I managed to see 3/4 of it before we opted out. The highlight was The Acropolis restaurant where we had a really tasty meal, that alone was worth the drive!

Visited Flannels in the metro centre this morning. I wanted Dior cosmetics and had a facial with Amelia. It was an amazing experience, even was given a glass of champagne. My husband was given a latte. Even he enjoyed it and came away with a sample of aftershave, so he was happy. He bought my Christmas present. Amelia was totally amazing. She is totally the best Dior lady I have ever been served by. So much so, I'll be making sure I get served by her again. She's friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. She gave me makeup tips. I used to live down in Plymouth, and I can honestly say in the many years I've been buying Dior, I've never had such great customer service. Thank you Amelia. Dior dont ever let her go!

Still one of the best shopping destinations in the UK. Huge range of shops, from high-street names to designer outlets, and loads of restaurants and cafes to relax in. Parking is easy and free, and the mall’s layout makes it easy to navigate. Always clean, well-lit, and family-friendly. A great day out.

Massive shopping arcade with retail parks surrounding it also. Can be very busy but there is a variety of shops, restaurants and coffee shops to keep you going. Plenty of parking and pleased to say, plenty of electric charging points. Public toilets are clean and plentiful and all levels appear accessible.

Newcastle United Football Club, with its modern home ground at St James' Park, offers stadium tours and merchandise for fans. The club's location on South Shore Road provides stunning views of historic landmarks like the Tyne Bridge and Swing Bridge. The area is also known for being Britain's Hippest Street, making it a must-visit spot in NewcastleGateshead quayside.
Did the Stadium Tour on 31-5-25, absolutely brilliant tour, one of the best we have done, our tour guides Jack and Claire did a great job showing us around, everyone was very friendly, couldn’t do the tunnel walk as there was a children’s tournament on the pitch so will have to come back again to do that and the rooftop walk. Would recommend to anyone wanting to visit this beautiful stadium while in this beautiful city, thanks.

Today I had the pleasure to get a tour of the stadium. Our tour guide was Angus and he did a great job. The stadium itself is amazing and really worth a visit. The tour was funny and informative. Highly recommended!

Stadium Tour was very good and informative however didn't get to see the trophies apart from that was good to see behind the scenes also being a big Newcastle fan also helps. A lot of the signage was getting changed from Premier League to the Champions League for the game against Benfica. Also went into a players private box. ⚽👍

The atmosphere in the stadium on the final day of the 2024-25 season was electric. The result on the day didn't match fans' expectations but qualification for the UEFA Champions League means that North East England will see fans from across the continent grace the region in 2025-26.

Stadium Tour was awesome, what a great ground. Lots of Newcastle memorabilla to view whilst awaiting the guide to arrive. The guide was very knowledgable and we all had such a great time. Caught the bus from the Metro Centre, £2.50 per adult.

I spent most of my adult life rolling my eyes at the mention of football. "Yawn, boring, nope, not for me, I don't care". When I met my Geordie husband our weekend was (realistically) planned around NUFC. "I wouldn't mind watching the game" was his way of saying "how about you go to the beach and I'll start engaging again in normal conversation in a couple of hours?" OR "you can watch with me (least preferred option) but heaven forbid if you start talking too much or asking too many questions I will have to be rude and say: " I'm just trying to watch the game!". Fast forward to 2025: the Geordie husband and I have somehow created a child who is even more black & white than most of his Geordie family. His teachers comment "I've never taught a child with such a knowledge of football" (yes but how is he doing at maths?!🤣). He has long conversations with die-hard supporters on the bus on the way to the game. "Aye, that's a good line-up that like son. There's a future sports commentator here!" they say. (I don't always understand what he's talking about but apparently his favourite Gordon goal was against Arsenal last year...?!). I was (reluctantly) dragged to a football game 3 years ago, and I must admit.... it was love at first sight. The atmosphere, the passion, the pace of the game, the drama. WOW. Just wow. Incredible entertainment. I now thoroughly enjoy going to every game I can (i.e. when we win at the ballot). I don't tend to watch on TV like the fam does but I do like to keep up with the scores and how the teams are doing. Football is a religion in Newcastle and there is a lot of fun and excitement and even tears to be experienced if you decide to join in. My 17-year-old self would be appalled to see the 43-year-old self losing her voice from too much shouting at St James Park however no regrets. Toon Toon Forever! ⚫️⚪️

As an away supporter this stadium is awesome, the atmosphere and the views from the top are amazing. Found the fans friendly. The stairs leading up to the away end of the stadium can leave you feeling out of breath but I think there’s a lift to take you to the top if you’re struggling .

Located in Blandford Square, the Discovery Museum is a treasure trove of local maritime history and science exhibits. The museum showcases Newcastle's industrial and maritime past with temporary exhibitions and features the Destination Tyneside gallery, highlighting the area's migration history. Visitors can explore diverse collections including maritime history, social history, costumes, and military items. The museum offers interactive experiences such as a science maze, TARDIS room, and flight simulator across its three floors.
Free... free... for free. A amazing place to visit better than other nearby museums with respect. Loads of exhibits and things to enjoy inside. Loved the challenger 2 tank outside. Loved walking through Newcastle over the years. No pressure to donate just a few stations scattered about unmanned asking for donations. Staff where helpful and friendly and with it being big your never too close to other people and you've time to absorb and enjoy the exhibits.

Took a train ride with the children and had a under 10 minute walk to the museum. It is free to enter, wheelchair accessible and pushchair friendly, they have places to park your pram or pushchair. They have a cafe. Plenty of things to do, lots to learn and see and plenty of interactive things. 3 floors to interact with, our children range from 2 to 14 and they all enjoyed it. Highly recommend

Booked in for a activity that was making a madel around a moving sphere so we could pick up recycling. It was a small booking fee for adults and child and the 4yr old could come for free. This was harder then I expected but we had a lot of fun and the staff were amazing with both children. Especially since the youngest went rogue controlling the sphere and kept trying to eat the ladies lunch. They absolutely loved this

It’s free so who’s to complain? Daughter (2) and newborn had a great few hours out, sadly I didn’t get time to read much of the stuff as my toddler wanted to run around, it’s a great place for a free day out and I often go there for a day out to also Take my older kids who were at school this day but it does get busy on school holidays and weekends. The water room where toddlers play with water gets really busy but I don’t go in there otherwise I’d never get back out. It’s a very interesting place all I. All

The Angel of the North is a monumental steel sculpture located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. Designed by artist Antony Gormley, this iconic piece of public art has become a symbol of northern England since its unveiling in 1998. Standing at 20 meters tall with a wingspan of 54 meters, the Angel dominates the landscape near the A1 highway.
I didn't know what to expect from this iconic piece of art, it was amazing! It's brutality of angular design against the soft tranquility of nature was profound. There was a peace that surrounded the tall, striking edifice standing so high above the land, it was hard not to just stand and stare, enjoying the tranquility. Plenty of parking and just a short walk, make the effort to stand in awe at this modern wonder
Tony P — Google review
An iconic statue in the UK which is quite nice to look at close, rather than just from the A1 as you travel past. It was good to enjoy a walk around it with the family and take in its share size. There is a small car park at the site which if full, a space will come up shortly as there are a lot of people coming and going all the time. I didn't see any toilets. Well worth a stop have an ice cream or coffee from the businesses there and take in the sight.
Adam B — Google review
I really enjoyed seeing this. The engineering that went into fabricating something this big I find fascinating. It's literally on a mound on It's own and you can see the top of it as you come off the motorway. The information board is worth a read. The person that wrote it put some good facts. There is a car park right next to it which is free and we had no struggles parking. If you enjoy art and big sculptures this is definitely worth a visit.
Karl V — Google review
Angel of the North – A Monumental Pause Worth Taking Standing sentinel over Gateshead, the Angel of the North is more than just a sculpture—it’s a moment of stillness in motion. Towering at 20 meters high with a wingspan that rivals a jumbo jet, this rust-hued giant commands attention from the A1, yet invites quiet reflection up close. I visited on a crisp morning, and despite its proximity to the motorway, the site felt surprisingly serene. The free parking and open-access grounds make it an easy detour, whether you’re en route to Durham or exploring the North East. There’s a gentle slope leading to the statue, and a small memorial garden tucked below—unexpected and deeply moving, with handwritten notes that hint at personal pilgrimages and quiet grief. The Angel itself is arresting. Stark, industrial, and oddly graceful, it evokes both strength and vulnerability. Designed by Antony Gormley, it’s meant to embody transition and human connection—and it does, especially when viewed against the shifting skies. • Location: Just off the A167, near Gateshead. • Cost: Completely free, including parking. • Best Time to Visit: Early morning or golden hour for dramatic light and fewer crowds. • Extras: Often an ice cream van on site, and plenty of space for a picnic. Whether you’re a fan of modern art or simply seeking a pause in your journey, the Angel of the North offers a rare blend of accessibility and emotional depth. It’s not just a landmark—it’s a quiet witness to countless stories.

Erected in remembrance of the miners in the North East. Located just off the A1M just south of Newcastle. Parking available, plenty for disabled. Nice and peaceful, a few visitors and dog walkers about. Managed to fly my drone (see videos attached) worth a visit if in the area.

Nestled in a cozy corner, Fattoush Lounge invites you to embark on a culinary journey through authentic Middle Eastern flavors. This charming Halal eatery is renowned for its warm hospitality and vibrant atmosphere, making it the perfect spot for an unforgettable dining experience. The menu boasts an impressive array of Lebanese dishes, from succulent kebabs and fresh salads to delightful hummus and crispy falafel, ensuring there's something for everyone—including vegan and vegetarian options.
I got the mixed chicken grill which came with grilled chicken, Shawarma chicken, Chicken Shish and chicken wings. We also got a Mexican Chicken Shawarma. I’ve had the Mexican sauce before and last time I didn’t like it at all but idk if it was because it came warm, here, but it was class. We also got some lamb Sambousek to share, amazing. My grill came with a choice of salad, chips or rice as well as some traditional flatbread. Tbh the only things which were a little mid were the wings and the chips which were a bit bland. Everything else was top notch. Especially when considering the amount you get for the price.

First visit. Staff were incredibly friendly and checked on us multiple times throughout the meal. Food was fresh and well cooked. Slightly too much lemon and salt in one of the starters but nit a major issue. Will go again

Myself and my wife visited Fattoush Lounge in the Metrocentre today. We’ve walked passed loads of times but always ended up eating elsewhere. Today we decided to give it a go. Wow - why have we gone elsewhere in the past?!! This was without doubt one of the best meals we’ve ever had. We went for a mixed grill to share and when it arrived we were blown away. It looked amazing and wow there was so much! The food also smelled and tasted absolutely fantastic. It was all cooked perfectly and every bite was delicious. We ate what we could but a I say, there was a lot! No way we were wasting any though so they very kindly gave us a couple of boxes so that we could take the rest home with us. Moving onto the service - this was also second to none. From the moment we came in until the moment we left, the staff were all really friendly and courteous and made us feel really welcome. Overall, we were so pleased we visited today and will absolutely be back soon! If like us, you’ve walked past and ended up going to one of the more ‘popular’ restaurants, I urge you to give Fattoush Lounge a go. You will not be disappointed!

Decent food been here a couple times, most recent wasn't as good as before. Chilli sauce was more bland than I remember and salad missing pickles etc. Bread was a tad dry, normally you get some served with the meat on top to soak in all the juice ( and grease) but was all served separately. The rest of the food was still quality and the portion size was value for money. Fast and friendly service.

The lamb biryani was really nice. The portion of lamb in the biryani was really generous. Falafel was good. I personally did not like the third item. However the staff were very nice and welcoming. Service charge is added to the bill.

POSITIVES: Excellent shop! If you love Lebanese/Persian/Pakistani food, this restaurant offers it all! Since all them three regions all have the same type of food, but just cooked with different spices and styles! For example, a Pakistani kofta or an aubergine curry will be spicy, aromatic and full of several masala flavours, while the Persian kofta or an aubergine dish will have Lebanese influenced flavours! Kofta is my favourite thing, I have researched very deep into the history of kofta kebab lol!!! Friendly staff! Great options to select from! Great atmosphere when it's busy! ------------------------------------------------------------- NEGATIVES: I don't think I can find any to be honest!

This is a little nugget of heaven tucked away in the Metrocentre. The food is fantastic as a lover of Middle Eastern cuisine this place ticked every box for me, as a vegetarian I sometimes struggle with restaurant menus but there’s plenty of choice at Fattoush, lovely salads, hummus, falafel, halloumi, a range of starters geared to vegetarians and plenty here for the meat eaters, shawarma, kebabs and other meats. The portions are huge and usually come with rice or chips and a salad, the sweets are delicious and I loved in particular the freshly squeezed juices. The prices are amazing, we went at lunch time which had an offer of a starter and wrap which still comes with chips and dips for £13! If you can squeeze a dessert in (we couldn’t but the lovely owner sent us home with one free in a take out box) they are not to be missed, very nice! 10 out of 10 from me and we’ll definitely be back, it’s our new favourite place!

Great Halal Spot for Lunch! Stopped by for lunch since it’s one of the few halal options in Metro. The shawarma and chips were delicious, and I especially loved the Mexican hot sauce—it added a nice kick! The bread was a bit cold and hard, which was a slight downside, but the overall meal was satisfying. The staff were friendly, and the older gentleman at the till was particularly kind, taking a moment to chat. It’s a solid grill spot with good food and welcoming service. Definitely worth a try!

This hidden gem is popular among locals and visitors alike, especially for its Sunday lunch which receives high praise from customers. To ensure a seat at this bustling establishment, it is recommended to book in advance either online or by phone.
As a vegan I was happy to see they do a full green vegetarian breakfast. I ordered this without the fried eggs to make it vegan. The menu in general is vegetarian friendly. Most dishes can be made vegan. It’s a shame they don’t serve any alternative milks. But, then again it’s a pub, and not a cafe. The service was good. Food came out very quickly which was nice as we were hungry! I would definitely come back again.

So disappointed!! We were over from Ireland & I picked this restaurant to celebrate my husbands big birthday. I emailed & made reservation in advance for 10 of us for 6:30pm on a Sunday. Reservation was confirmed & I was told we had the table for 2 hours. Reason why I picked this restaurant was because it served Sunday roasts. We arrived at 6;30 & told kitchen closed at 7 so hurry up & put orders in before it closed including desserts or we wouldn’t get anything! We had to write orders down ourselves & go to till with them (I wasn’t aware of this practice) Then told nearly everything we were ordering was not available-No roasts whatsoever-chicken, beef, turkey? No fish, no shepherds pie! Basically nothing left on menu! Then no desserts left either. Food was just mediocre. While the wee girl who was serving bar & food tried her best, the service & whole experience was bad. What I had hoped to be a special birthday dinner with family & friends was an awful experience.

Regular meet-up place as food and service is always good. Not into sports personally so I just zone out the large screen tv's..too busy chatting, eating and drinking. I don't usually leave a review, but the staff members Chloe and Callie were especially helpful after I'd ordered my meal and forgot to mention I was vegetarian. My all day breakfast was taken away and a vegetarian one arrived. I apologied as it was my fault and was prepared to pay again for my meal but was told that was not necessary. As usual, the food was delicious 😋 Thank You.

Alic spotted another Peoples Pub with a Cask Marque. Thus a very good real ale selection. City centre bar vibe rather than a locals vibe. Booth bought me a Cullercoats brewery Grace Darking Blond. A 5% golden ale. Pub doing a roaring trade on this Tuesday afternoon in August. Lots of food being ordered. Buzzing atmosphere. Large upstairs bar as well. Std toilets up here.

Cannot recommend the three bulls enough! Chloe, Caley and Andrew absolutely made our night. They managed to fit us in at dead short notice then gave us amazing service all night! 10/10 all round! We phoned to book and they were amazing, sat us quickly on arrival and the food and drink serive was great. We will be back soon!

Blackfriars Restaurant is housed in a renovated friary that dates back over 800 years, located in the heart of Newcastle city center. The historic building served as a monastery retreat for over three centuries before being repurposed into meeting rooms and almshouses. Today, it features craft workshops, a gallery, and a gift shop alongside its renowned restaurant. The restaurant offers British cuisine served at heavy wooden tables within the former refectory of the friary.
First time trying this restaurant……boy I was not disappointed. Best Sunday lunch in the north east. Firstly the setting is lovely, fantastic outside seating area and stacks of character inside. Staff were lovely. Now the food ….. amazing. Pork belly lunch with a black pudding starter. Delicious and I would recommend to anyone. A lovely experience and I will be back again !

First visit here was for restaurant week, service was speedy, food was delicious, and well presented and the setting was fantastic, (we were seated in the banqueting hall). No complaints, empty plates all round. Highly recommended 👌

Been a few years since we were last here and was just as good as I remember. We got the langostine cocktail and scallop starters, with oyster and hash brown snacks. Followed by Duck breast and a side of cheese leeks. All dishes were exceptional, but I do need the recipe for the brown sauce that came with the hash browns. Or at least them to sell bottles of it. I've never felt so passionate about a condiment but this is well deserving. Service was great, attentive and friendly.

Celebrated my birthday in Blackfriars - this was my first visit. The venue is stunning - simply beautiful. Service - very friendly and professional. Food - wow 😲 delicious. Nothing to complaint. We had a lovely time, received recommendation for drinks and food. Also received a birthday card such a nice gesture. I will be back in the future for special occasions or celebrations ❤️

WOW, the food was so good, we originally started out planning to have two courses but couldn’t resist a third. Their homemade gluten free bread was the best bread I’ve had since being diagnosed coeliac. The staff took my allergies extremely seriously and made us feel very welcome. I couldn’t recommend this place highly enough, it was mind blowing.

Came for our 1st year wedding anniversary. The staff were all lovely, really nice to chat too, welcoming, professional and friendly. Everyone on the night was 10/10. Food was delicious, a good gluten free selection and understanding of coeliac, I'm not poorly this morning writing this so that bodes extremely well for there understanding too. They went the extra mile for us for our anniversary and it made our night that extra bit special for us. Thank you for amazing night.

Excellent restaurant with good service and really tasty food. The ingredients are super fresh and of such good quality. Never had a potato that sweet before. The fish was perfectly cooked.

Unique atmosphere in their historic building and very detailed interior creating an elegant yet cosy environment. The food is pretty good with carefully designed menu, not overwhelming but always satisfying. The wines menu is good, well matching the food. The set menu is also pretty good if you can catch it. The bar next to the main dining area is so good that I sometimes go there early to get a glass before going to the main area.

Modern British restaurant
House of Tides is a renowned restaurant located in a remote 19th-century drovers inn, now transformed into a destination restaurant with rooms. The dining room is filled with natural light and features exposed beams, creating an inviting atmosphere for savoring gourmet British cuisine and tasting menus. The chef, James Close, showcases his culinary expertise by sourcing local ingredients and offering a 15-course menu that takes diners on a global gastronomic journey.
Absolutely incredible service and atmosphere from one of Newcastle's few Michelin starred restaurants (one of the others being its sister- Solstice, both by Kenny Atkinson). The staff were attentive and passionate about the food, restaurant and city. The building itself is full of olden charm and allows the vibe to be high-end but unpretentious. The drinks/wine list was long and plentiful with the option to add a pairing to your tasting menu. The menu itself was fresh, delicious, seasonal and without fault. We opted for the extra course of langoustine and scallop agnlotti which was incredible. My other favourite dish would be the ceviche which was also plated beautifully. On the whole, exceptional and I'll most definitely be heading back or to Solstice when I'm next back in the motherland.

I came with my parents for my birthday and firstly the staff were super accommodating to my mums food preferences which are admittedly quite confusing. They were also super attentive and friendly. Our cocktails were lovely and the food was incredible with generous portions. They packed up all our leftovers very neatly in a bag, didn’t rush us and made our time special. I especially thought the chicken dish was delicious and my mum loved the mandolin dessert. Obviously on the pricey side but worth a visit for a treat. The pictures don’t show all the courses, just a few.

Fancy food rather than fine dining. So incredibly disappointing. Off to a very bad start when 3 seperate staff approached our table to ask if we'd like to order. Another 2 came and asked if we wanted drinks! We ordered a drink and waited - and waited - finally the waitress appeared and went to the wrong table. Then wandered around and went back to the bar. We waited! Eventually with drinks the food came. We had the tasting menu - only it wasn't a tasting menu - a roast chicken dinner or steak (at an extra £50). The first few courses were tasty but nothing extraordinary. Then the Tatar and confit egg - well - a hard boiled egg! It was replaced with apologies but for this kind of money it just wasn't good enough. The evening was saved by Conor - the Irish waiter. Knowledgeable, funny and very good at his job. We were given a discount and a free drink. I would say we had a good time in spite of the place rather than because of it. Could not recommend it on any level. Apparently it had a Michelin Star - once... It's definitely slipped since then.

I have been looking forward to coming here for years. Having worked hospitality and eaten at a lot Michelin restaurants around the world, I had great expectations. You go to restaurants like this for the experience - it’s about the ‘theatre’ - the attention to detail of the wait staff/service, the menu/food/flavours and of course the ambience. While the food was lovely and the staff were friendly - I felt the restaurant doesn’t know what it is. I left feeling that it was a nice dinner - but not to the level that it sells itself as. Service - there was a lack of attention to detail. For instance, we had to top our own water up, we had to ask what the dishes were that we were being served and no one thought about giving us our coats at the end of the night - we had to ask several staff. The prices paid at a restaurant like this, you just can’t switch off - which sadly happened on this Saturday night. Any other restaurant I wouldn’t care - but a Michelin restaurant I expect more. Food - was lovely and very tasty. There were no flavours or combinations that I thought were life changing. There was no amuse-bouche - but the cod and beef were nice. The flavours of the cabbage side with the beef was the most memorable. The wine list was fine - however it is served to you on an iPad which did kind of ruin the ambience of the dinner to look and scroll on an iPad. Ambience - lovely old building - but again I felt there were simple wins that were missed. Staff didn’t split the tables up, so while the restaurant was only half full, they sat us all next to each other and left half of it empty which was odd. The music was also random. Billy Joel, modern pop and not what I would call background music. Lastly, these restaurants tend to be for special occasion destinations. For us it was our 11 year anniversary. When you tell staff they usually make a fuss, or plate your desert with happy anniversary written in chocolate or something random. While it may feel naff - it is important to remember that restaurants like this specialise in ‘special occasion’ dinning. Again, even while knowing it was our anniversary I couldn’t help feeling a bit unloved because nothing was done to make us feel special at all. Not a big deal, but again this is not a normal restaurant, which is reflected in its price. And then the bill came out with a £59 tip automatically put on it (15%). A bit excessive - I wouldn’t normally mind paying it if the service was great - but it was ordinary. I paid it anyway - but I did leave the night with a bad taste in my mouth. So yeah all in all disappointing. If this was a restaurant like 21 - I wouldn’t haven’t have felt the same way - however I wouldn’t have just blowing £450 on a dinner for two.

Fantastic meal, it was quiet (Friday afternoon) but the food and staff were excellent. Good selection of whiskeys and a couple of cracking beers. Recommended.

Very expensive but nothing exceptional about the food. The main course of Sea Bream was very salty and the waitress said she would let the kitchen know!!! It was a special occasion as it was a wedding anniversary which we stated at the time of booking however no attempt was made to make us feel special.
DAVID R — Google review
First time visiting house of tides and will unfortunately be the last. Visited as a group of 4 as a celebration on a Friday night. We asked to have a drink downstairs first, there was absolutely no atmosphere downstairs and it was not a cosy or welcoming vibe. The waitress also told us the bar were unable to do two of the cocktails we asked for, despite a chilli margarita being a pretty standard drink these days. When we went upstairs we were not welcomed or asked if it was our first time dining at the restaurant etc. Simply “are you ready to order?” Which took us all by surprise as we had booked a tasting menu so didn’t think we would need to. It was explained that we could upgrade the main course and that’s what we could order, we were also informed that they didn’t have the main course of pheasant available and it would instead be pork. Quite disappointing that a Michelin stared restaurant didn’t have one of their main courses available on a Friday 7pm sitting. The food was presented well, but tasted average and didn’t feel ground breaking, service was alright but didn’t feel smooth or confident, certainly not Michelin level. There isn’t much atmosphere in the restaurant and the toilets give the vibe of a standard cafe and not a Michelin stared restaurant. We had made a note on the booking that the night was a celebration, there was a congratulatory card hidden at the back of our table, a nice touch, however there was spelling error which was just written over, you would think at a Michelin stared restaurant a new card would have been used instead. It’s a little thing, but you would expect better! The bill came to over £800 and everyone left absolutely starving, with cereal and toast required when we got home!! Overall a very, very expensive and disappointing visit. It’s a shame to leave a negative review but when prices are this high you do expect better.

Feels like you’re paying for the name rather than the food. The tasting menu felt very uninspired and rather standard.

Eldon Square is a bustling public square and popular meeting spot in Newcastle. It features small lawns, benches, and a central war memorial. The area is known for its vibrant commercial street with numerous famous shops offering a variety of products from clothes, shoes, and hats to supermarket appliances and food options like Thai, Mexican, and Italian cuisine. However, despite the large Chinese population in the area, there's a surprising lack of Chinese food establishments.
Eldon Square is q fantastic shopping center right in the heart of New Castle!. It has a great variety of stores, from high- street favourites to boutique brands, making it prefect for a full day of shopping. The layout is spacious and easy to navigate, with plenty of seating areas to take a break. There's also a good selection of restaurant and cafes, offering something for everyone. The cleanliness and atmosphere are top-notch. Easy access to public transportation and parking neqrby. A must-visit if you're in New Castle.

Really helpful staff. Had great help from a young style advisor in the women's clothing department when I was looking for a dress for my husband's Celebration Of Life recently. Very patient, she found lots of suitable and flattering dresses in my style and helped me whittle them down to the best one for my figure type. Haberdashery always helpful too, though a rather small range of what I need. 🙂‍↔️

Shopped in Eldon Square all my life and it has a good range of shops and facilities. I am really struggling with the centre now being dog friendly. A few weeks back I seen a dog weeing up the wall outside of John Lewis and today I seen a dog having a poo in the shopping centre. Yes the owner picked up the poo, but it just puts you off seeing dogs weeing and pooing all over the centre. What if that had of been in an actual shop? I just do not see why people need to drag their dogs around shops/a shopping centre! I also have a child that's terrified of dogs so its now a struggle visiting there with the family.

Great shopping mall. Clean & shiny. A big car park make it more easy for shopping. This place is not only full of chained branded store but local as well. Also good choice of restaurants, cafés, Bars, eateries etc. All under one roof spreading on two floors. Clean toilets. It's a historic part of Newcastle's city center where shoppers have been finding household essentials and unique items for generations. A unique place. Lots of different eats places, we chose items from a bakery and pizza, freshly made £3.00 for a slice bigger than my head! Great selection of other stalls selling a wide variety of meats, fish, fruit, vegetables, bakery, deli and speciality foods. Look and you'll find the remaining M &S penny bazaar...such a treat. Great space with a welcoming vibe

Loved wandering around Grainger Market! Such a lively place with so much character. From old-school butchers and bakeries to little cafés and international street food, there’s always something to explore. Ended up snacking my way through and even picked up some local goodies. It’s not fancy, but it feels authentic and full of charm – definitely a spot to experience the real Newcastle vibe.

When visiting the Granger Market I always like to call in to the Firebrick Brewery shop for a couple of drinks. The shop has a large selection of canned craft ales and a nice selection of their own keg beers too. They kindly allow you to bring your own food in which you can purchase from the vast selection of food outlets around the market. Great place to sit and relax.
Paul S — Google review
Went on Wednesday and about 50% of the stalls were either, closed or vacant, good selection of places to eat and what stalls were open were very good, however, there is building work going on there and whoever thought it was a good idea to close the toilets, without an on site alternative, needs to rethink there idea. With no disabled loos on site the alternative is a walk to the nearby shopping centre, not fun when you are desperate to go, not too mention all the staff that work there. Have some common sense.

Central Arcade, located in the Grainger Town area of Newcastle, is an Edwardian shopping arcade known for its stunning architecture. Rebuilt in 1906 after a fire destroyed the original structure from 1837, it features mosaic flooring, stained glass windows, ornate lighting, and dark wood fittings under a glass barrel-vaulted roof. Despite its historical charm, visitors cannot access shops directly from inside the arcade. Notable businesses within Central Arcade include JG Windows music store and upscale retailers.

Central Arcade is a beautiful spot in Newcastle, featuring stunning Victorian architecture, intricate tile work, and a gorgeous glass ceiling that gives it a truly special atmosphere. Walking through, you can really appreciate the historic charm of the place. With such a unique setting, it could be even more vibrant with a better selection of boutiques or specialty stores.

Beautiful theatre both inside and outside. It's not huge but seats are very steep if you don't like heights. We were in the upper circle and view was good. I don't think there are many seats without a decent view. We watched Miss Saigon. Stunning show. Staff are lovely. Big queue for toilets during interval but I suppose that is expected. I have been several times and I always enjoy the venue. It is in a lovely part of Newcastle with stunning buildings, eateries and bars galore. We parked at Dean street car park and it's a very easy walk of about 5 mins. Recommend.

Tyneside Cinema, located in Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, is a refurbished 3-screen cinema housed in a beautiful Grade II listed building. The independent picture house also features two cafes and an airy bar, making it an ideal spot for pre or post-movie drinks. Additionally, Tyneside Cinema provides free guided tours and showcases newsreel displays.
Been here a few times great options for experiences such as the Mamma Mia! Sing-Along Bottomless Brunch. Alongside a diverse set of films to choose from and excellent prices for a lovely experience. I also very much enjoyed the decor at this establishment. The staff were very friendly and helpful whenever I visited.

Having tried to see a docu/movie last Sunday and due to not being able to get parked, didn’t manage to get to the venue in time and wasn’t able to cancel my booking however the cinema went beyond what I was expecting and credited my account to spend on another film which I did the following Wednesday. As someone who has worked in cinemas for decades and upto lockdown, frequented the Tyneside a few times a year so not a great customer. My visit on Wednesday left me feeling underwhelmed with the place, the famous Tea Room isn’t open anymore, there was hardly any visible staff, it appeared the circle area of the classic was closed as well, the place was pretty empty and felt soulless, a depressing sight. I was interested in applying for one of the jobs and was going to go to the open day this month and have a chat with someone about applying for one of the front of house jobs, but seeing the place as it was last Wednesday has put me off, I think it might be boring. Some cinemas have managed to rebuild business after the enforced closure, sadly the Tyneside seems it hasn’t. I wish the place well and hopefully one day it might see an increase in guests although without what was its great asset is no longer open, I don’t think it will. I was in a very small cinema, the Roxy yet despite a very small screen, the presentation was pretty good with a decent screen image and great sound, but can understand with smaller auditoria like Roxy, how people might just prefer watching movies at home as most people have large screens now. Was a sad visit as it was such a great place.

Love this cinema 💗 I booked at the box office to see a film later that day, when I arrived I was told very apologetically by the lovely staff member that the film had to be cancelled due to a technical issue. My ticket was refunded plus I was given a voucher to see an alternative film free ! More than happy with this, thank you. I also enjoyed the coffee and the sweet potato fries in the cafe bar & the staff in there are really lovely too ! I have just found this great cinema & will be back as often as possible ! 💗

Tyneside is a reminder of how cinema is more than just a screen. In the days of multiplex & a digital life, Tyneside is one of the few remaining places that still truly feel like a real cinema. They have a welcoming foyer and the ground floor screen has comfortable original style cinema seats, and still has an actual ‘curtains up’. The building has some beautiful original interior, while being upgraded on upper floors to accommodate extra screens. The stairs are a trek, but thankfully there is a lift!! The cinema shows a variety of films from mainstream to indie, and shows many films you wouldn’t see at big chain places. Tickets are a little more than some places, but they offer discounts which are easily applied (I use a Cea card) and if you need to change your plans, I’ve found this cinema much more accommodating to this than many others. The staff are always friendly and ready to help, and though the bar/cafe area is often busy, it usually doesn’t take much time to be served. The food may not be cheap, but it’s always a healthy size & I’ve enjoyed the things I’ve tried from the menu so far. Keep it up Tyneside & I hope you’re long to remain a wonderful place, with a true cinema spirit.

What a fantastic cinema in the heart of Newcastle. Staff very friendly - feels family run. Great bar as well, for pre drinks, and you can buy a bottle of wine to take in to watch the film.

Have always had a good experience here. The seats are nice, the screens are clear (unlike an experience we had at Cineworld. Decent range of alcohol free beers which you can take into the film with you.

The Heritage tour was very informative, and it was great to learn about the history of the cinema from our Heritage Guide. The newsreel shown was from well before my time, and provided an excellent insight into past events and how they were reported. The Tyneside Cinema is well worth a visit

One of the best independent cinemas going at the moment. Some of the best showings for the big upcoming new films with early releases. Comfortable seating, lovely cafe, cool overnight fun screenings and genuine staff, who’ve never been a problem but have always made the experience great! P.S - make more shirts with the over night showings (I will buy them)

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
The Tyne Bridge is an iconic landmark in Newcastle, England, known for its open-work arch that creates a striking elliptical appearance when viewed from a distance. Spanning the River Tyne, this 7,000-ton bridge took over three years to complete and stands at 59 meters high and 389 meters long. It connects the city center with Gateshead and offers stunning views of the river and city skyline. The bridge is a popular spot for both pedestrians and drivers seeking picturesque photo opportunities.
There she is, the Tyne Bridge, watching down over all of us. As imposing as it is, it's also very comforting and I always look forward to seeing this whenever I am back home in my native North East.

There's always a holiday atmosphere on Newcastle Quayside. Iconic views, Baltic gallery, Millennium Bridge, plenty of pubs and restaurants. A lovely place for an evening stroll. The open air market on a Sunday is great for food, crafts, art and ice cream. In summer there's often special events like the beach resort or a tall ship, and the Baltic always has something new on display for a winter's day.
Chris B — Google review
Totally iconic, I love this bridge. Work has just started on a restoration which seems long overdue. Rust, rot, flaked paint. Poor really, but at least help is on the way for this UK landmark.

The Tyne Bridge is undeniably an iconic symbol connecting Newcastle and Gateshead, embodying the spirit and resilience of the region. When it opened it was the largest single-span bridge globally, and it remains a striking piece of engineering to this day. Walking across the bridge offers breathtaking views of the River Tyne and the surrounding cityscape. At sunset, the scenery is especially beautiful, casting warm hues across the skyline—a perfect backdrop for photos.

Beautiful Views, a highly recommended Landmark for photography when travelling in Newcastle because of how iconic it is.

Brilliant bridge on a nice clear day you can see the whole of Newcastle i like the way it's been built the shape the time taken to build it must have been long but well worth it. We came from Birmingham 5 hour drive to see the sights and it never disappointed brilliant city

Great engineering at its best. Great views from here overlooking the Swing Bridge and High Level Bridge as well as a great view of parts of the city. Bridge can be noisy as used by all types of vehicles. Wide pavements however if you have children with you, they must not be out of your sight due to the constant vehicular traffic.

SnackWallah is a popular spot in Newcastle's Grainger Market, offering a unique twist on authentic Indian street food. The menu features entirely vegan options, catering to those seeking healthy and delicious alternatives. With prices starting at just 3, patrons can enjoy satisfying meals such as the beloved Bhel Puri, made with homemade chutneys, vegetables, snacks, and spices.
Wow! Heard so many good things about this place and was really excited to visit. As soon as we got off the train, we headed straight to the market and it did not disappoint! We both got the curry banquet which was plenty of food for £13. Really tasty samosa and pakoras. The curry of the day had a nice level of spice. Tasty chai and lassi too. Will be back tomorrow!

Came here today whilst attending a uni open day. Absolutely superb food. Friendly service and good prices. We were lucky to get seated as it got very busy soon after we arrived. Cannot complement this place enough. Would definitely eat here again 😁

This was my friends and i first time in Newcastle and in SnackWallah. The food might look good but looks can be deceiving (and they were), The food tasted like soap and parfume but regadless we tried to eat it. We didnt know that we had to throw our trays and the leftover food away by ourselfs, so we asked the cashier. He was unfriendly and didnt even talk to you he just pointed his head into the direction of the bin and that was it. BTW The food gave us food poisining and it did not stay longer than 15minutes in our stomach before it had to come out. Stomach cramps and fever followed afterwards. For the sake of your stomach i would recomend to stay away!

Very disappointed with the food, the bhajis/Pakoras were underseasoned, warmed in the microwave and very very dry I must say. They look good but that’s about it. They need to up their game, improve the quality of their snacks and make sure they are fresh. Thanks!

I love Snackwallah. You need to get it timed right to make sure you get a seat at lunchtime as its very popular! Food is always delicious and well presented. My favourite place in Grainger Market.

The menu offers a range of authentic Indian dishes, from flavorful curries to tasty street food snacks, all bursting with rich spices and flavors. The portions are generous, and the service is prompt and attentive. The restaurant is also well-known for its fantastic selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Absolutely sensational! The food here is fantastic and such good value for money. We had the curry of the day and an onion bhaji wrap for £11! Authentic street food I would say with that western twist! Fantastic and such a delight to see them in the Grainger Market still.

Restaurant
Fat Hippo Newcastle, specifically Fat Hippo Underground, is a trendy burger joint located in the dimly-lit basement of Shakespeare Street. The restaurant offers a cool and edgy atmosphere with exposed brick walls and neon signage. Known for its gourmet burgers made with 4oz meat patties ground in-house daily, the menu also features unique extras like Dirty Skins and Jalapeno Poppers.
Loved the name! Was drawn to this place for its name, then I looked at reviews, and it just had to be done! We didn't book, though I recommend you probably should. We turned up Sunday evening just as the Newcastle game had finished, but the manager squeezed us in. This place is in a basement just behind the theatre and the Grey Owl cocktail bar. Upon entering the basement, which is all black but well lit, with brilliant artwork on the walls. We got seated and served promptly. Food passed us, and I knew we wouldn't be disappointed. The food looks incredible! The staff were so polite, and nothing was an issue. We got our drinks, then the hard decision on our burgers! Food was served fast, well presented, and really bloody tasty! From entering to leaving (just as the supporters were coming in thick and fast) was 40 minutes! We didn't feel rushed, felt full and very happy!

Very delicious food, there's a nice selection of beef and chicken burgers. It was very packed, but we were able to get a table straight away. Not too badly priced for a meal out. I would recommend it!
Lauren B — Google review
It was an enjoyable meal! Not the best we’ve ever had, but not the worst. The burgers were huge and we had to contemplate how to eat it in one bite. There were lots of veg/vegan options which is unusual for a burger joint! We ordered the loaded tots which I would get again! The cheese balls which I would NOT get again. There was too much cheese and the dressing had a LOT of dill in it. We also got a decent burger!
Emily N — Google review
The OG of all fat hippos. The original restaurant that opened never fails to impress, I have been here 3 times now and the food is always exceptional. There is such a wide variety of options to choose from & the burgers are always juicy. The only thing that let's all fat hippos locations down is the selection of drinks. But do you come here for drinks? No, you come here for the outrageous smash burgers. Can cater for most allergies & the flavour still bangs, definitely recommend trying fat hippo out, whether it be here, brum town or London.

Amazing looking food. Sadly my buffalo burger was flavourless and cold. Same with my partners burger. The fries and cheese balls (also only lukewarm) were delicious.

We went to Fat Hippo when we visited friends in Newcastle. Fat Hippo was recommended by a friend and it was amazing. I went for the Born Slippy and it was excellent, I'd high recommended thay but based on what everyone else ordered there wasn't a bad choice. Next time we visit we will come here again!

Pizza Express is a popular chain pizzeria known for its relaxed atmosphere and handmade pizzas. As the first pizza chain in Britain, it offers a variety of pizza options, including calzones and thin and crispy Romanas with various toppings to suit every palate. The Eldon Square branch is perfect for a bite while shopping. Located in The Qube, it's part of a food and leisure zone that attracts many visitors each week. Customers praise the accommodating staff and reliable gluten-free options.
Service from Heidi was excellent. Food top notch. Remember to book a lot of people got turned away. And those who book and don't turn up cancel a lot of hungry people about
Paul D — Google review
Well it is pizza express, just one of those chains going through the daily monotomy of making pizza. The best part ... the food was paid for by Tesco Clubcard Vouchers on a 2:1 basis. So just £23 pounds spent on two pizzas and a sharing platter. As can be seen from the sharing platter, a lot of food for three people. Everything stored and reproduced for the masses at minimal cost. Definitely no love here. There was enough cheese to redistribute to the local community. The bread was crispy to the extent I did not know whether to use a gum sheild to stop my gums from being lacerated or take it to the local radio station for acoustic effects, for breaking glass. Now the gluten free base .... recipe not right cooking very poor. See photo. Very very thin, brown and hard and dry and hard and just rock hard. The centre was cooked for the first nanometre and raw dough on top. Take a look at the Classia Pollo Italiano, just raw dough above a wafer thin cooked layer. With the ingredients on top looking like the night before's take away. Come on Pizza Express you are better than this. Put some love back in your food. Customer services asked us for more details, which I supplied. Thank you, we look forward to redeeming our vouchers and our next visit 🤞.

When ordering food I asked about whether the burn ends pizza was spicy as I can't tolerate anything spicy - the waitress checked with the chef and told me it wasn't at all spicy. On tasting the food I actually found it quite spicy and my lips went numb. Also, I wouldn't class it as "burnt ends", just beef. Fortunately this was only half of my pizza. Nobody asked if the food was OK which should be standard practice, especially if someone has made a query while ordering. I finished my meal before my wife and someone tried to take my plate away even after I pointed out that my wife was still eating - this is really bad form for waiting. The pizzas are a good size - not too big to feel stuffed but big enough to fill you. As usual, deserts are pricey for what they are, although we did enjoy them.

We visited on 30/7/25 and the waitress we had looked like she couldn't be bothered to be there. She walked around the restaurant with a glum face the whole time and not once when she served us did she smile. It felt very awkward. My son ordered pasta from the kids menu and it was drowning in oil, I had to take the bits of pasta out and put it onto a side plate instead. Nobody came over to ask if our food was okay, which is usual standard at restaurants. Don't think we'll be back anytime soon.

Ordered a pizza for takeaway. I got grease and bbq sauce with a little dough. Think they forgot to add the cheese I’m not too sure. Was meant to have a tomato base and be large and was a small bbq sauce pizza. Words can’t describe how ashamed I am of myself for even eating that. Austin

We visited here without a reservation on Saturday night. The restaurant wasn't busy and we were seated quickly and easily. The lady that seated us was very helpful with the menu explaining what I could have that was gluten/dairy free. That unfortunately is where the good service ended. This lady dissapeared and we were left with some other servers who didn't seem present unless the kitchen called. I had to ask for a sauce that was missing from my starter, the starter dishes weren't cleared before the mains arrived, and when the mains did arrive I could see my 'raw slaw' sat at the kitchen waiting to be brought over but after 5 minutes I got up and retrieved it myself. There was no staff to be seen. The kitchen staff were apologetic but this is the first time I've ever had to do this at any restaurant. It felt like they shut at 9.30 (as they kept pointing out to people) and were only interested in getting cleaned down and out on time. The only time we did get prompt service was when we finally saw someone and asked for the bill. This is the first time I have ever left a restaurant without leaving a tip, but a tip is for good service which we most certainly didn't receive on this occasion. The food however was very delicious and the first member of staff we dealt with was very helpful so thankyou to her.

SIX Rooftop at BALTIC is a sophisticated rooftop restaurant located at the iconic BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Newcastle. Offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the River Tyne, this chilled-out rooftop bar provides a fantastic setting to enjoy modern British bistro dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. Despite its air of exclusivity and glamour, SIX maintains a warm, relaxed atmosphere without an expensive price tag.
Had the privilege of the chefs table. Incredible food and service. All chefs produced their own course. We did the 9 course taster menu. Carlson the chef was great and super interactive and great fun. Loved it. Best ever. Top night and well worth it.

It's depicted as a 9 course menu but three are canapés, some bread and butter and petit fours. All the food is well presented and the staff are excellent but with the venison being a stand out dish ,the rest is nothing of note. It was fun to do as have experienced a lot of tasting menus but would I recommend, regretfully probably not. £££

We visited SIX Rooftop for our anniversary celebration and it couldn’t have been more special. From the moment you step out of the elevator, the views over the Quayside and river are breathtaking — but it’s the staff who truly make the experience stand out. We started with drinks at the bar where the team made us feel instantly welcome and so comfortable. When we were taken to our table, a thoughtful anniversary card was waiting, and we were upgraded to the Chef’s Table right at the front of the kitchen — such a unique touch. As it was a special occasion, we went all out with the nine-course tasting menu and wine pairings. Our amazing waitress, Eve, was incredibly knowledgeable about every drink, giving full explanations of the pairings, and she went above and beyond to make the evening unforgettable. Jen, the amazingly talented chef, personally brought out each dish, sharing the story behind the ingredients and explaining the process with real passion and precision. Her attention to detail and ability to make us feel part of the dining journey was outstanding. It was clear that she leads by example — the whole kitchen team worked seamlessly under her guidance to deliver an unforgettable culinary experience. For all you foodies out there — this is a must-visit. Stunning views, exceptional service, and food that is truly unforgettable. You won’t be disappointed.
Tina G — Google review
Absolutely spectacular food in an absolutely spectacular setting with the most amazing views. I am coeliac, and every course of the tasting menu was expertly adapted to be gluten free. I didn't get sick and I was never jealous of the unadapted food. A wonderful night. Although on the expensive end, totally worth it for the quality of what we received.
Thomas C — Google review
We visited on a friday evening and were excited to try the tasting menu and wine flight. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed and offered drinks in the viewing box looking over the Tyne towards the Millennium Bridge before being taken through to the restaurant. We chose the nine course taster menu and wine selection. The star of the menu was an excellent lamb dish served in a variety of ways with a dark rich blackberry red. Some elements were a little lacking - a wine course missed but then rectified when we asked and perhaps a little over salting on some of the dishes. However, over all, the night and the company were wonderful, as was the venue with its views over the river, which changed by the moment as the light changed and the city slipped towards midnight. In general, everything was really good, except a little oversalted Eggs and Soldiers, a missed wine with one of the courses and a little overpriced Tasting Menu. My genuine rating for SIX Rooftop Baltic is 4.5 . However, as there's no option to rate the place like that, I rate it 5. It's definitely worth to visit this place at least once. Enjoy!

What an amazing place, the views over Newcastle across the Tyne and Gateshead are amazing. The atmosphere is so chilled for such an upmarket venue. However that aside it is definitely worth a visit.

Really friendly and helpful staff here. I managed to find a table on a Saturday night and use the app to order. Drinks were taking over 15 minutes to come out, which is fairly understandable for how busy they were. They got my first drink wrong, but I couldn't be bothered making an issue out of it as it was luckily something I don't normally mind drinking. Kept it quiet and ordered again to get the right one second time round.

I have been here a couple of times. As Don McLean might sing; A long, long time ago. Probably 30+ years. Alic surprised how busy it is on an early Tuesday evening. Had to sit in the courtyard as all tables gone inside. Bit chilly after an August storm. I work close by and have popped in for food many times over the years, today we ordered chips and a burger, the same we have ordered in the past. The Burger was over done and burnt with an extremely small portion of chips, in the past they included onion rings and coleslaw - I asked the waiter where’s the rest of the chips to be told we have reduced our portion sizes but we still use the large plates!!! We have decided we won’t be going back, there’s plenty of other places with better value!!

The Broad Chare is a renovated pub in Newcastle upon Tyne, featuring an oak bar, painted brick walls, and stripped wood floors. Under the ownership of former pro-golfer James Close, it has been transformed into a renowned restaurant with rooms. The pub seamlessly blends traditional British pub ambiance with innovative culinary experiences.
Hear me out. Get yourself the Halibut and a cherry Liefmans belgian beer and you'll have a great time. The beer was more toward a sparkling wine than a beer and it paired amazingly with the fish which was cooked to perfection. We also had the rump steak burger which was good value for money and again cooked perfectly but nothing amazing. Deserts were also good but not needed. For atmosphere and staff it's an easy5/5.

Little bit of a gushy review but I can hands down say this is my absolute favourite place to eat in town! My partner and I have been frequently in the past few years and have never been served anything less than perfection! Service is absolutely outstanding with knowledgeable and attentive staff and the food……superlative! Fish dishes; fresh, well balanced and delicious and oh my word the lamb sharing main 🤤 just make sure you don’t eat for 24 hours beforehand if you want to finish it (although the staff are very happy to wrap up for you too). All in all, outstanding! Can’t wait for my next outing to The Broad Chare 😊

Absolute best Sunday roast I've had since moving up here a year ago. We ordered the veggie roast which came with bubble and squeak; pork belly and the beef. Everything was flavoured beautifully and the roast potatoes were incredible. Definitely coming back

Pros: Good selection of beers, scotch egg, haggis on toast is an interesting take. Cons: Too pricey for what they offer. Fish cake was too dry, only mediocre at best. "Grilled calf liver" wasn't grilled, but pan fried (though it was delicious, nevertheless). Green leaves in the salad weren't properly washed, you could see the dirt on some of them. Attention to detail was lacking, overall ("luxury soap" bottle in the toilet was refilled with some cheap washing liquid that you can hardly rinse off, etc.). Michelin list brought us here, but I regretted the visit. I hope this was a one off incident, and they are doing better generally.

Newcastle Cathedral is a medieval structure featuring a lantern spire and the Baron Collingwood memorial. It stands as a powerful representation of dark, looming architecture in the city's tradition. The cathedral holds over 900 years of Newcastle's history within its stones and monuments, being the only cathedral in the UK dedicated to St Nicholas. Its iconic Lantern Tower has served as a guiding light for ships on the River Tyne.
I popped into Newcastle Cathedral the other day while wandering around the city center, and it was surprisingly cool. I mean, I'm not usually one for cathedrals, but this one had something about it... First off, it's free to get in, which is always a bonus. They just have a collection box if you want to donate. It's a beautiful building, really impressive inside. The stained glass is gorgeous, and some really interesting sculptures and art. There's a new churchyard trail and landscaped terrace, providing a sanctuary to unwind. I was just wandering around, snapping photos, and soaking it all in. I overheard a tour guide who was excellent and made the history of the cathedral extremely interesting. You can easily spend an hour or two just wandering around, checking everything out. They have a shop and a café. It's a welcoming space, with friendly staff and volunteers. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in Newcastle and want to see a bit of history and beautiful architecture. Plus, they have concerts and events sometimes, so check their website.

Attended an 80's concert by candlelight. Lovely atmosphere. The staff on the door and the bar/cafe friendly - cakes on offer looked amazing but didnt sample - one for another visit! Lots of space to move out of people's way and dance. Good venue but a little chilly being a cathedral so dancing warms you up.

A nice Cathedral but I dislike new modern furniture being introduced where they clearly don’t fit and here is a good example, nothing appears in keeping. What I liked though was seeing how some homeless people were able to find a seat and rest here from the rain, get warmth and comfort. It’s what a religious building should be doing and looking to reach out.

Lovely and very beautiful free to enter cathedral. Was greeted by kind staff who made sure to tell me where things were and that I could ask questions if I wished. Lots of gorgeous stained glass windows, there are toilets and a cafe as a well as a small gift shop.

Been spoilt, the pews are gone, the laid up regimental colours hidden away on some dingy corner. Place of worship now more often a concert venue full of drunks. No wonder the C of E is becoming a joke.

First time in the Cathedral for a music event. It is an amazing building and the acoustics were very good. Not the real Fleetwood Mac but they were a decent band. Little bit of a trek to the bar area but its good to see that buildings of this type are being used in new ways and being supported by the public.

Beautiful cathedral in the centre of Newcastle. Beautiful architecture, stained glass windows, crypt, and welcoming staff ⛪ Gift shop and cafe on site too 👍🏻

This is a beautiful cathedral in the heart of the city. It's like entering into the spell of a fairy tale. Its calm, serenity, and beauty of architecture are amazing. The place is well maintained and msut visit. It has painted glass, big halls and amazing art.

Historical landmark
Newcastle Castle, a stone fortress and former prison, was built between 1168 and 1178. Situated on the site of a Roman fortress, it offers stunning views over the city and river. The castle includes the Castle Keep and the Black Gate, both over 800 years old. Throughout its history, it has served as a fort, prison, Sheriffs office, and air raid shelter.
The history of this place is very interesting, and presented very well. Especially the pictures of how the area used to look like so many years ago. The staff is friendly too. When you buy a ticket, it's valid for one year, and you get access to both the Castle Keep and the Black Gate (with a small shop). The view of Newcastle on top of the Castle Keep is amazing. I stayed here for half an hour overlooking the city, including the trains.

Absolutely loved visiting Newcastle Castle! I was genuinely impressed by the stunning architecture and how well this historic site has been preserved. Every stone seems to tell a story, and the views from the top are simply breathtaking — a perfect blend of history and scenery. Walking through the narrow passages and ancient chambers truly felt like stepping back in time. A must-visit for anyone interested in medieval history or simply looking to explore one of Newcastle’s architectural gems.

Had an amazing visit here as it was included in our walking tour. It's an amazing attraction and lots of history to be learnt. There is a lot of climbing so a reasonable level of fitness is needed, but there are areas to rest and look at historical aspects of the Castle. It wasn't too crowded and the information signs and interactive elements are very good. It's reasonably priced for entry and all in all a great experience.
Mark C — Google review
I enjoyed my visit. It was so close to my hotel and I could enjoy my time without the castle being too busy. The only thing was that it was so windy so I couldn't enjoy the views at the top of the castle! Other than that I was grateful for this experience.. some suggestions -there needs to be guides around and more signs out for visitors.
Justnara Z — Google review
Visited this castle on the last day of my holiday, and spent an enjoyable couple of hours here. A short but steep walk from the quayside, the castle consists of two main buildings, separated by a wooden bridge, the foundations of an earlier Roman fort, and railway arches. You have to visit the Black Gate first, because it's where you buy your tickets, in a small gift shop at the top of a flight of stone steps (there's a lift if you can't manage stairs). Adult admission is £12.50, it's £8.20 for a child, £11.25 concession. I bought an interesting little guidebook for £4.95, and there are also audio guides. The girl at the ticket desk was really helpful, telling me all about what there was to see and how to get to it. Useful to know that the only toilets in the castle are here too! The Black Gate, built around 1250, was the main gateway to the medieval castle. There's an upstairs exhibition in a former guardroom with artefacts, crafts, and lots of information about Newcastle's long and eventful history, but there's not a lot else to see. Far more interesting for me was the 12th century keep. The well-preserved rooms, on three floors reached by spiral staircases, include a great hall with medieval decorations and a large stone fireplace, a cellar, a Norman chapel, prisoners' cells, medieval toilets and a small room with a well. There are interesting passages and recesses to discover, but also a lot of steps not advisable for anyone with mobility issues to attempt. Plenty of fascinating info about the castle's history and royal connections, a few artefacts, and fun activities that included drawings for children to colour in and medieval board games, and friendly staff around to show me how to play them! But the highlight for me was the spectacular view from the roof! Accessed through an iron door at the top of a spiral staircase, it's a fantastic 360 degree panorama of Newcastle and all its best landmarks, from the Cathedral and Grey's Monument to the Tyne bridges, as well as the trains that were constantly passing below. Wonderful photo opportunities! All in all, a great way to spend the afternoon. Well worth a visit!

We booked with Newcastle Castle for an event and it was truly amazing. The staff were really organised and attentive in the lead up to the event and at the event itself. It was a really hot day and the team worked extremely hard carrying heavy things like tables etc into the hall and up many flights of stairs to set-up and pack down. The event went late into the evening so we really appreciate the staff working the event until that time and all the effort they put in to make the event super memorable. The castle itself is amazing, views from the rooftop are stunning, it's a beautiful venue! We had the best time ever and created memories we'll treasure forever ❤️

Well worth going just for the views. Amazing. You could see all the city and great place for pictures as well. Also good information in places like the great hall on the history of the castle.

Fascinating ancient fortress with many kid friendly games scattered throughout. Many stairs, not suitable for those with mobility issues; be advised, there is only one toilet facility (located in the Black Gate reception area) and no water fountains... come prepared and you will be rewarded with a wonderful afternoon of exploration.

Sri Lankan restaurant
Located near the Quayside and Tyne Bridge, URY Restaurant offers a fusion of Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine. The menu features dishes like Sri Lankan peppered beef and coconut kingfish, complemented by an extensive selection of wines, spirits, and cocktails. The restaurant caters generously to vegetarians and vegans. Guests can expect a delightful dining experience with standout dishes such as perfectly crispy dosa filled with well-seasoned potatoes and flavorful butter chicken.
1st visit to Ury on Queen Street, Quayside. Definitely won't be the last! Absolutely amazing Sri Lankan food! The crab was absolutely amazing, definitely worth the mess my other half ended up in 🤣 Staff were lovely and very helpful with side dish recommendations based on mains ordered. So pleased to have found genuinely authentic Sri Lankan food in the North East.

Came here with friends before a concert so 5.45pm on a Saturday so first in. Immaculately clean with a lovely waiter who looked as if he was going to play cricket after serving us - very smart! The Queen's platter starter of chicken, lamb, fish and prawn was a good choice and gave you lots of amazing flavours. My butter chicken very good and the naan was thin and crispy not stodgy like you sometimes get. We all agreed that meal was excellent and would come again. 4 starters , 4 mains, 2 bottles of wine, 1 rice and 1 naan came to £172 with 10% tip already added.

UPDATE 16.11.24 (Previous review from a year ago still stands). The same three pals and I returned, bang on a year after our first visit. We had been to the same venue over the water too, earlier on. This time it was busy! Grub was top. My Seekh Kebab starter and Spiced Beef Roast really worked well for me. Downers? Ok it could do with a lick of paint throughout and not all the staff had a solid grasp of 'The Queen's' (as ace as they were). Give it a try for top scran. Alongside three pals I hit this curry house before heading over the river to a certain well known concert venue. We hadn't planned to go, but it was prime tea-time and bellies rumbled. We were the only folks in (18.00 Saturday night) by chance. I scored a lamb madras and shared a big naan bread and a few rice's. Very decent grub! Zero colonic repercussions after which is always a bonus, whilst Kingfisher lager hit the spot too. Not perhaps a dead trendy joint, but head down for a fully respectable feed all round.

This is one of the best Keralan / Sri Lankan restaurants in the UK. The food from the first smell and taste, brought us back to memories of Southern India. When the food touches your soul you know it is made with passion. I highly recommend people to try the South Indian / Sri Lankan food options. Such as Kothuroti, dosa and Lamprais. Can't wait to go back again to try the fish fry and beef fry with porotta and a pint of refreshing Kingfisher. Don't stop with the savoury and finish with some Watalappam, which is a Sri Lankan coconut custard pudding. I don't think I can recommend this restaurant more highly than I do. Food will take time to cook but be patient as it is worth it but portions are huge so hunger will be quenched. Ordered: Beef dosa, beef lamprais, devilled squid, kothuroti, pint of Kingfisher and Watalappam. Try to not order the usual north Indian curry, rice and poppadoms as you can get this anywhere.

Not good food it’s just fake microwave food taste pathetic. The biriyani was so dry hence they serve with that sauce I was wonder why biriyani should come with sauce . The masala dosa served with drumstick sambar they microwave it so hot until drumsticks become a just sticks . The coconut chutney was horrible and the starter full of ketchup they said it’s chilli chicken. No wonder I was alone at restaurant. Never go back again .

They have wide range of Sri Lankan food and spicy level. English and Sinhala speaking friendly staff. They were very helpful when selecting food from the menu. Setting is also decent and calm. They have cocktails and wines. Kottu is really nice and delicious. Lamprais is really authentic Sri Lankan taste.

We went to Ury’s for an early Valentine’s dinner accompanied by our infant. Though we’ve been regulars to this place, this was our first time since the new management took over. We were very impressed by the staff and the new menu. The V day seat decor was lovely. Many new additions to the menu. The food is authentic as usual but the presentation has improved manifold these days. The staff were lovely and so considerate that they even tiptoed around our table after our baby fell asleep so as not to wake her up as they served our food. The owner himself checked up on us to make sure everything was fine. Needless to say we’ll surely be visiting soon again

We have been to this restaurant recently, very bad experience. After placing the order it took almost an hour to get the food to the table. The food served was very bad and we got a hair from the poori we ordered. Biriyani felt like pulav and mixed with the non- veg type you ask with. Dosa served was cold and felt like cooked long before. Please choose wisely and opt other options available nearby.

Little quite when we visited and the service was a little slow as a result (maybe waiting for the dinner rush). Food was great, highly recommend the fondue sharing platter (to die for!). Good selection of cocktails and drinks for the alcohol drinkers and also a good mix of alcohol free too.

Exceptional Experience at Zizzi Newcastle! 🌟 Visited Zizzi Newcastle recently and had a fantastic time. The food was absolutely amazing—beautifully presented, bursting with flavour, and delivered with real attention to detail. From starters to dessert, every bite was spot on. What really made the visit special was the service. Hayley took care of us, and she was outstanding—friendly, attentive, and genuinely warm. She made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and kept everything running smoothly throughout our meal. Highly recommend Zizzi Newcastle for both great food and superb hospitality. Thanks to Hayley and the team for a memorable experience!

Went here for my friend’s birthday dinner on a Friday evening. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of gluten free options. Especially the calamari starter which I would definitely order again. The cocktails were great. For mains we both got the beef ragú and forgot to take photos because it smelled so damn good and didn’t disappoint. The dessert I had was the lemon blackcurrant cheesecake which was really nice but im not a fan of the ricotta ice cream. Service was decent. It was quite quiet in the restaurant to be honest so no issues with waiting for service. Food was good. Would go again.

I booked this venue for a family meal. Booked online very easily for 12 people. When we arrived we saw put us at a large table right at the serving hatch and as we got seated, a waiter with a bit of a comb over tutted at me as he was trying to get plates to take to customers. If the table us in the way, don't put it there!!! However once we got seated and our lovely waiter came over, our meal was superb. He was polite and friendly and super helpful. Our food was delicious and came surprisingly quickly. Everyone agreed it was delicious. Several of our group had a pulled pork pizza which we can recommend. Overall, really good and will be back. Limited parking on grey street. Disabled access and toilet downstairs if required. Decent menu and choice of drinks.

I love Zizzis, purely because it delivers every time... first time I took the kids (12) and it's now their favourite restaurant! Great freshly made pasta.. the speciality carbonara and meatballs both excellent!! Their service was above and beyond, love it, love it, love it. 🥰 they even put a little sticker on your plate to let you know it's hot or to confirm they've adhered to your allergen situation... great all round.

Dobson and Parnell is a sophisticated dining venue located in a well-known Quayside address. The restaurant offers British and European dishes along with clever cocktails, creating a buzzy vibe. It is known for its excellent cuisine, including optional five-course and seven-course tasting menus. The establishment has received numerous awards, reflecting its high quality and extends to its extensive wine list.
Visited here for the first time on restaurant week. We had it eyeballed for a while, and we certainly weren't disappointed. Welcoming staff, friendly table service, and no long waits in between courses. The food was absolutely delicious, well presented, plenty of it and there were empty plates from us 😋 Enjoyed the whole experience, clean and tidy, lovely relaxed atmosphere This place deserves all 5 stars, and wouldn't hesitate to go back or recommend to others. Reasonably priced, for the quality of the dishes on offer 👌 👏

The one thing that surprised was how quiet it was, granted it was Thursday lunch time but in my opinion the 2/3 course set lunch menu offers excellent value for money in a restaurant with a special atmosphere. Well worth a visit and combining with a walk along the quayside. FYI the creamy pic was creamed goats cheese with beetroot and candied nuts, truly delicious.

Wow! This place fully deserves all the awards it has received. We had a late Friday evening booking (9.30pm) so it was quieter than earlier in the evening but the whole experience was fantastic! Very friendly service, unbelievably delicious food, great selection of wines, beers and cocktails. The menu was really varied and it was hard not to order every starter, main and dessert. Very good value for what we enjoyed - if this restaurant was in London the prices would have been double! All this capped off by the small excellent touch that they have heating for stored coats so you literally leave with a warm glow! Highly, highly recommended and congratulations to the whole D&P team!

Found this restaurant with really good reviews on internet and decided to give it a try. The place has a lovely modern atmosphere and loved the lighting design on the place with a bunch of floating bulbs. We when on the 28 of December so they were serving the Christmas set menu. I look for the description on the page but was not available any more. Both of the started we chose where quite good the beef tartar 10/10. For the next course I got the duck Wellington, it was really disappointed by a raw chewy duck. after sending the dish back I was corner to order the fish dish since “it was the faster to be prepared” with a curry sauce, nothing especial. For the service after I send the dish back (that I did in the must respectful manner) change so much, it looked like they didn’t wanna to come back to us and the restaurant was probably at half capacity. There was one young waiter with a nice attitude that I’ll aplaude his service. Maybe the tiredness of the end of the season didn’t help. I’ll come back to try the a la cart menu.

Dobson and Parnell had some great dishes however considering the expectations I was left disappointed. I had the beef pie which was dry. The starter of fish pie was excellent. The peas in both dishes were weirdly sweet in taste.

Me and my girlfriend visited in October for my 30th birthday. Immediately the level of customer service we received on arrival was 10/10 and continued throughout the whole time we were there, the food was fantastic and the atmosphere matched it. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a modern and iconic structure that spans the River Tyne, providing separate pathways for pedestrians and cyclists. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and engineered by Gifford, it stands out among the distinguished bridges in the area. Connecting Gateshead with Newcastle via Gateshead Quays and Newcastle's Quayside, this bridge not only serves as a functional crossing but also attracts visitors from around the world due to its elegant design and engineering marvel.
As a piece of architecture, this bridge is pleasing to the eye on many forms. It's presence is bold and demanding, you just have to look at it and figure out what it looks like without even moving. At night it is lit up to offer a beautiful spectrum against the blacked out background of the Tyne river. It also offers a beautiful view from a neighbouring Hotel we have stayed at several times. It was always a great little walk to wake up in the morning before diving back into the warm hotel for breakfast

Gateshead Millennium Bridge – Engineering with Soul The Gateshead Millennium Bridge isn’t just a crossing—it’s a performance. Linking Newcastle’s Quayside with Gateshead’s cultural quarter, this sleek, tilting arc is a marvel of modern design and quiet drama. I visited on a breezy evening, just in time to watch the bridge tilt—a slow, graceful motion that earned it the nickname “Blinking Eye.” It’s the world’s first and only tilting bridge, and when it moves, it feels like the river itself is taking a breath. The structure is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, making it a peaceful vantage point to take in the Tyne’s historic skyline. Nearby, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and Sage Gateshead add cultural weight to the experience, while the Quayside buzzes with cafés and market stalls. Whether you’re drawn by its engineering or its elegance, the Millennium Bridge offers a moment of quiet connection—between cities, between people, and between past and future.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in the North East. It’s not just a bridge, it’s a piece of art and engineering brilliance. The tilting design is incredible to see in action, and at night the lighting makes it even more spectacular. Great place for a walk, cycling, or just enjoying the Quayside views. Definitely a must-visit in Newcastle and Gateshead!

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is absolutely stunning and a must-see in Newcastle–Gateshead. Its unique tilting design makes it one of the most impressive bridges I’ve ever visited, both as a piece of engineering and as a landmark. Walking across gives you great views of the Quayside, and at night the bridge lights up beautifully, creating a magical atmosphere. It’s also right by plenty of pubs, restaurants, and attractions, so it’s perfect to include as part of an evening stroll. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, it’s an iconic spot that captures the energy and character of Newcastle. Highly recommended, especially at sunset or after dark when the reflections on the water are incredible.

Every time I cross this bridge to visit the Baltic I marvel at the amazing views it offers. It is visually very beautiful from afar and the practical elements of the design allows for both pedestrians and cyclists to cross in their own safe space. In the past I have taken some lovely photos of the bridge at twilight; sadly on my most recent visit it was too cold and blustery to hang around until the light started to fade.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a stunning example of modern engineering and design, linking Gateshead and Newcastle over the River Tyne. Its unique tilting mechanism, resembling a “blinking eye,” is both functional and mesmerizing to watch in action. The sleek, arched structure is particularly beautiful when illuminated at night, casting reflections on the water. Offering scenic views of the river and surrounding landmarks, it’s a favorite spot for photographers and visitors alike. While weather and timing for the tilt might affect the experience, the bridge remains a must-see icon of innovation and elegance.

My photos don’t really do much justice for these Markets which are truly amazing in what’s offered. The food offered alone just looks incredible and so tasty, unfortunately we had brekkie earlier but this will not stop us coming back next time we visits our daughter in University here.

A good variety of different stalls and stands, the food section gives you heaps of choices and its a great location. Well worth a morning or afternoon out!

Excellent Sunday market, road closed off, so easy to navigate. Amazing range of market stalls, food stalls amazing and very diverse. Great views from the market along the Tyne. Lovely walk. Worth a visit.
Mandy W — Google review
Overall it’s fine but some of the people who run stalls have no care or consideration when people need to take the bus which does run this route. A woman totally blocking the road and arguing about whether or not she needs to move for public transport really isn’t it. People have lives they need to live. Remember that.

Came up for the weekend and stumbled on this great Sunday market. The whole place was buzzing and so many stalls to look at for gifts and souvenirs, plus loads of places selling sweet treats and a section of fantastic street food vendors. So much choice we struggled to choose and ended up going to 4 different places! Will be returning the next time I am in the north east on a Sunday for sure!

"The Biscuit Factory" is a 2-storey art and crafts gallery located in a large, former warehouse with exposed bricks and stripped floors. It offers diverse exhibitions by established big name and emerging artists across four gallery spaces. The venue provides accessible facilities such as toilets, baby changing facilities, adult changing facilities (available on request), and hearing loops at various locations.
My favourite art gallery in Newcastle. I liked how you could see the prices of every item. There are so many different kinds of exhibits. The style of the building is nice-it really makes it stand out. There's a good cafe within the art gallery as well.

Very very artsy place. Definitely a place to visit to get your creative juices flowing! Art pieces all came with a pretty crazy price tag so for the rich artsy peeps why spend £500 on a balenciaga when you can get an exotic looking vase! Btw i love the animal pieces that were made using different materials to give cool textures

Parking is extremely difficult. On my visit I came with a lad in a wheelchair and two cars (neither had blue badges) were parked across where the disability bay is situated. There were no alternative spaces nearby. Once inside though the Biscuit Factory is a delight of exhibits by local artists. It's a lovely building to wander around. The cafe has a diverse menu and all our ordered meals were lovely. 5 stars for the gallery and cafe but a star off for parking

Lovely gallery and shop space with a cafe. Stopped in for just under an hour. Didn't visit the cafe this time as came early in the day and not long had breakfast, but enjoyed viewing the books and artwork, as well as checking the upcoming events. Parked a short walk from the location thinking we wouldn't get parked, but there was some spaces left.

Lovely place to go for some nice arts as well as food. I had Imam Bayeldi which was their special that day and it was gorgeous, very tasty and full of flavour. Staff were friendly too. Then looking at some arts which I think are work of local artist and they are lovely and very interesting.

Fantastic gallery, full of interesting, unique pieces. Also includes a great coffee shop, well worth a visit

We visited while we were staying in Newcastle for a few days. We often visit art galleries & I think many are getting better at being inclusive open to all rather than exclusive. This one is fantastic! The building and interior is inviting and as soon as we walked in we were welcomed and a member of the team told us about the gallery as we'd never been before. The artwork was accessible both in terms of viewing and purchasing with the option to pay with installments. We bought a gorgeous sculpture. It was a great experience. Unfortunately we live in Essex so can't go back regularly (there were so many beautiful pieces) but would definitely recommend visiting.

Museums
The Laing Art Gallery, located in Newcastle upon Tyne, is the city's oldest gallery and a hub for historic, modern, and contemporary art. The gallery showcases 18th-20th century British oil paintings and watercolors in its vaulted-ceilinged galleries. Established in 1904 with funds from Alexander Laing, it houses an extensive collection of British artworks including pieces by John Martin, Paul Gauguin, Joshua Reynolds, and Edward Burne-Jones.
Well laid out and themed galleries gave a nice afternoon activity. I particularly enjoyed the emphasis on local artists and subjects. It’s nice to see the heritage of the area through the eyes of both historic and more modern artists. The gallery was also free to visit which was a nice and welcome surprise.

The Lang Art Gallery is in a lovely building in the centre of Newcastle. The main part of the gallery is free and contains a variety of artworks. There is also a section where you can buy tickets. The current exhibition is ‘Romance to Realities’ where they are displaying art relating to the changing landscapes of the North. It was interesting to see paintings from Durham, Northumberland, and the Scottish boarders. I felt it was worth paying to see. The Gallery has a cafe but I cannot comment on this as I didn’t go in. The gift shop sold a selection of goods from books and cards to jewellery and bags. I travelled by train and it took less than 15 mins to walk from there.
Melanie H — Google review
We went today with my daughter because she loves art, and it was incredible. I think everyone should take their kids there to see so many historical pieces and amazing artwork. There are five different art rooms you can visit for free, and there are more exhibitions available if you’re willing to pay.
Shoayb H — Google review
Free art gallery with a cafe and a shop. There's also an exhibition currently (With These Hands) that requires an admission charge, but I couldn't find information about it (on-site) so I chose not to visit it. However, the free exhibitions are nice on their own. Definitely worth a visit.
Tim P — Google review
A really cool art gallery with some great Newcastle glass and pottery. Short walk from Manors and Monument stations. Good cafe as well! 😀
William B — Google review
The Laing Art Gallery features an impressive mix of British art, from classic oil paintings to contemporary exhibitions. Housed in a charming Edwardian building, the gallery offers well-curated and informative displays. Admission is free, and the friendly staff make your visit even better. There’s also a cosy café to relax in after exploring the art, and a playroom for kids, which closes at 15:30 for cleaning. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy art in the heart of Newcastle.

Park
Jesmond Dene is a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, offering a peaceful retreat in Newcastle. This park features acres of ancient woodland, historic landmarks, and diverse wildlife along the River Ouseburn. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks through the picturesque trails, encounter waterfalls flowing into clear pools, and explore a charming grotto.
HUGE park, great views, loads to see and so little time! It's great for runners, cyclists, pets, hikers, casual walkers and everyone else, beautiful and stunning and so much to see. You definitely can spend hours here and still have more to do

A Hidden Gem for a Woodland Walk in the City We visited in May and had a wonderful time! The paths were dry and easy to walk on , no wellies needed. We parked at Jesmond Dene House and enjoyed a lovely breakfast before heading out. The dene is literally just behind the hotel, making it super convenient. The walk itself is peaceful and scenic, with a few charming waterfalls along the way that really add to the atmosphere. A perfect little escape in the heart of the city such a lovely treat for a day out!

Lovely park, an oasis in Newcastle with the river Ouseburn running through it. There is a little zoo with goats, peacocks, chooks and pigs. We didn't go in as we have 2 dogs but ideal for families etc. The park is beautifully shaded and there are enough entry points for dogs to get into the river for a splash/paddle. The waterfall and mill are lovely to see. We need to go back to visit parts we missed as I fell and hurt my leg and ankle on some uneven paving. My fault for not paying enough attention but there are a lot of uneven places throughout the park which would be difficult for those with limited mobility.

Jesmond Dene in Newcastle is a beautiful and peaceful green space just minutes from the city centre. With its winding woodland paths, river, waterfalls, and wildlife, it feels like a quiet escape from urban life. It’s perfect for walking, relaxing, or enjoying nature, and the atmosphere is especially calm compared to the busy streets nearby. Some parts can get crowded on weekends, but overall it’s one of the most charming and refreshing spots in the city. Felt overjoyed when i was there
Shynn — Google review
Jesmond Dene is a beautiful spot if you love nature and fresh air. Walking through the park feels like escaping the city, with plenty of trees, greenery, and the peaceful river running through it. I really enjoyed the forest-like paths — it’s perfect for anyone who enjoys being surrounded by nature. That said, some parts of the park could use a bit of maintenance. The paths were quite dirty, and some of the wooden barriers along the river looked old and could be unsafe, so I hope they’re updated soon. Even with these small issues, I had a very enjoyable visit and would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing walk or a nature escape in Newcastle.”
Selim O — Google review
We loved Jesmond Dene, have been frequent visitors and maybe we were less aware when our baby now toddler was in a pushchair but now they are not I can’t deal with the amount of irresponsible dog owners who have their dogs off leads, allow them to run up to our 2 year old and do nothing to retrieve the dog. We had one young couple a few weeks ago tell us their dog didn’t know what a child was, it was just getting used to them, did nothing to recall the dog or even bother to try and retrieve it - how they think that dog should be anywhere near a toddler. Another young couple sat at the picnic benches before the waterfall, dog under the table - we turn around and it is racing towards our toddler - they do absolutely nothing to retrieve it - they just seemed to think it was funny. They are animals you can’t say it will never snap at someone. Is it really worth a child being scarred for life and a dog being put to sleep because you can’t be in anyway sensible. Dogs should be on leads, if you have no recall and you can’t be bothered to act. Your walking along and too many times you can’t actually tell who a dogs owner is because the dog is running off and the owner is still 2 minutes behind them, not in sight - that’s not being a dog owner. Sick of being told ‘it’s ok’ ‘they are friendly’ - it’s ok until it’s not ok and by then it’ll be too late and the damage will already be done. Also read the situation you are scaring a child and for what pure laziness and lack of control. It’s happening too many times - we had it 3 times on one visit. We’ve stopped going now. Council, someone needs to be doing more to stop it. Ruined a lovely place with irresponsible idiots.

You know you’re going to get a good quality burger here. It ain’t cheap but I don’t like poor quality burgers. Quite a big Five Guys but still got rammed. You can order via touch screens

Very good burger, probably one of the best in this kind of restaurants. The ketchup is also very good. It’s really expensive for a fast food restaurant, though. There are seats on two floors, but we didn’t find a socket anywhere.

Don't eat at Five Guys often - just twice before I think. Just got fries and a milkshake while waiting to go back to London (tasted a burger previously and want a fan) Fries were just ok, really nothing special I felt unfortunately. Portion were not of legendary large size either but enough did the trick. Service and staff - they were very friendly and nice so no complaints there. The restaurant was virtually empty around 2300 on a Saturday night but just a good, non threatening atmosphere. Great as a pitstop but personally, I wouldn't drop loads of money on this simply as I don't think the food warrants the high price and there are better alternatives. I think Burger King is a better option for example. Definitely not great but not bad..

Indian restaurant
Raval Indian Brasserie & Bar in Newcastle Gateshead offers a modern and sophisticated setting for Modern Indian fusion dining. Located in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, it has secured four national titles and is celebrated as the unrivaled champion in Northeast England. The restaurant is centrally located near popular landmarks such as Hilton Hotel, Glasshouse International Music Centre, and Newcastle Quayside.
I've just returned from a meal here with my girlfriend. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel so, so welcome. The staff we absolutely incredible. We ordered the Royal Platter which they presented as multiple courses and they were so kind to add some complimentary poppadoms with the most delicious pickle trays I've ever had. They also very kindly provided some complimentary rice and garlic naan to accompany our meal. These all complemented the meal spectacularly. When the main event arrived, spread out in a manner where we could really enjoy it, it was stunning. The lobster tasted fresh and because it was a young lobster, the meat just melted. The meats were also good. If I had any complaint at all, it is that the seekh kebabs seemed a little overcooked. That said, the flavours were still delicious. We debated whether we could fit a dessert in. I raised my penchant for gulab jamun at the table and when it was the first thing the lovely waiter suggested, we immediately decided to share a portion. They were served hot with ice-cream and it was delectable and just right to finish off our meal. This is my new favourite restaurant in Tyne and Wear and we will definitely be returning. It's also somewhere that I'll be proud to bring business colleagues!

We were on our way to the Glasshouse and decided to try here beforehand. We were not disappointed. Service was fantastic and the food was amazing. It will definitely not be our last visit and I would def recommend.

We were served a vegetarian feast in a calming, welcoming environment by conscientious and attentive waitstaff at Raval. We were assisted in ordering by the manager, who guided us based on our preferences and we were not disappointed. The Batata Bonda are not to be missed—light, crispy, and perfectly savory! Otherwise, the Panch-Mel Dal was the standout of our main dish choices, although all were memorable and delicious, including vegetable biryani. Highest recommendation for both food and service!

If Zero rating was an option I would have given that to the food. My first & last order from here. Ordered by Deliveroo 3 dishes Chicken tikka masala, prawn gravy, paneer masala, all are sweet, I still can not process my Chicken tikka masala is sweet like sugar and curry doesn’t look what I saw in pictures. Disappointed beyond imagination. Ruined my dinner with friends. I WILL NOT RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE EVER.

Immediate impressions were good when greeted at the door and quickly taken to nice table. The service was excellent throughout. However, what stood out was the food which was delicious, fresh and one of the best Indian meals I have had. The lamb was so tender and really nicely spiced (but not too hot). I would recommend this place to family and friends alike.

Went with my daughter and we had a great evening. We were greeted at the door and had a seat in the lounge area. Our drinks arrived and we were offered a trio of sharing dips which were delicious. We ordered our food and were shown to our table. For starters we shared Agra Onion Bhajia and the Daja Chana Chaat. Delicious. We ordered the Nawabi Lamb Passanda and the Adoori Chicken Korma with House Pilau and Naan bread. The flavours were fantastic and the meat so tender. If your in Newcastle or Gateshead you must visit Raval. First class food and service. Highly recommended.

Like most people we stopped here to eat before going to a show at the glasshouse (or slug as our friends call it) we've not had an Indian meal for ages.. Golly it was a stupendous reintroduction to amazing food.. Greeted at the door, seated to peruse the menu with drinks. When we were ready we were escorted to our table. Wonderfully light and crispy poppadoms and amazing dips (they brought out some hot lime pickle just for me) an array of dishes that were lip smacking yummy.. My limited punjab was received warmly (I don't do swear words) 10/10 from us..

The Cluny, situated in a former 1848 mill in Newcastle's Ouseburn Valley, is renowned as one of the top music venues in the North East. It has hosted legendary gigs and offers a unique dining experience with locally sourced meat burgers and a wide selection of local and world beers. This multifaceted establishment also houses a gallery, theater venue, and a bustling kitchen serving homemade dishes like lamb stew and sandwiches.
The Cluny is still a great pub and venue, they've been holding this spot down for decades, first visit in the last 6 months, great selection of different beers, ales, a lot of them local. Food is good modern pub grub, cooked well and not over priced. Always a solid choice.

Busy pub, was at two of its spaces Clunny 2 and Clunny 1, full disabled access to all areas, staff were good, seating available in Clunny2 more of a standing venue in 1, but you can bring seats in from the bar, if you need to sit. Good car parking nearby.

What an absolutely amazing place. As a first time visit it was a bit maze like if you look around C2 as well with it's staircase but what a fantastic set up! Good selection if beers on cask and keg and a lovely looking pub. Then you go round the corner through what looks like a cupboard door and you are in a little music venue with it's own small bar. Brilliant atmosphere and absolutely loads going on, pretty much something every night. Absolute shining light for real ale and the music industry. (We saw Reverend Peyton and his Big Damn Band and they were superb.)

Located on Heaton Road in Newcastle, Beirut Lounge is a Lebanese restaurant that has captured the hearts of diners with its friendly staff and warm atmosphere. The extensive menu offers mouth-watering halal dishes including hot and cold mezzes, pastries, grilled dishes, shawarmas, and more at great value for money. Chicken and lamb very well cooked , juicy and tender . All fresh juice , recommended mango lassy. And the lemon with mint was perfect. Generally when I order humus it is too bitter for my taste, but here was mustered and the tasty. Recommended meat and mix cold mezzes .

Trying Lebanese cuisine brought me back there - and the array of Lebanese cuisine served is incredible. The ambience and the furniture in Beirut Lounge are lovely. Humus Moutabal - Grilled aubergine with tahini and lemon juice Lamb Biryani The portions are LARGE. Delicious cuisine, one that I'd surely recommend for Lebanese cuisine.

I absolutely love it here There is a large menu to choose from between hot and cold starters soups, as well as a mixture of mains. The staff are very friendly and work hard to ensure you have a great service when you are there. The food quality seems very good and is home made The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food and portion size. Every time I go, I find myself buying different meals and all the food I have tried so far has been fantastic. They serve soft drinks here but do not serve alcohol, so if you did want alcohol you would need to take your own. I have been here over 6 times over the last year and I absolutely cannot recommend it enough, I will continue to visit! I would absolutely recommend
